Occupy camp teaches teens how to protest Education. Students are getting guidance on how to make their voices heard. Marni Halasa usually turns heads in full-length wedding dresses, scanty police costumes, or while gliding by on rollerblades in elaborate winged costumes. But last Friday, she was a blank canvas at the Urban Assembly Institute for Math and Science for Young Women, an all-girls public school in downtown Brooklyn. Students from the school are learning how to stage an effective protest through Occupy Summer School, a three-week-long course started by Occupy Alternative Banking. The class introduces the high school students to activism, activists and social movements. Cathy O’Neil, an Occupy member, former Barnard math professor and hedge fund analyst, said the course will culminate with a protest of the students’ choice on July 22. In between bites of Zabar’s bagels and talks of the Greek debt crisis, fracking, Walmart executive bonuses and Rupert Murdoch, Halasa answers a question — how do you get the courage to wear those costumes? — and encourages them to make their cause heard. “What are they [the media] going to like that they can’t ignore?” Halasa asked.

The young women are concerned with different issues — from mass incarceration and school funding — but last week agreed they could collectively get behind inequality of the sexes and equal pay. “I know it sounds weird, but I don’t want to learn to cook because I should know how to cook,” said Shavonnie Victor, 17, a senior at UAI. “People still expect men to go to work and women to have a house full of kids. If I don’t aspire to raise children, it doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with me.” “My family is from the islands, and the stereotypes are very strong there, and that’s why I want to make a change,” said Miriam Gerson, 17, a senior. A tentative protest is planned for next Wednesday, with a bake sale with different prices for the same product depending on the buyer’s gender, a simple dance routine and girl power playlist. On Monday, O’Neill said the class discussed a protest for free MetroCards for city teens. The class plans to vote on the protest topic closer to the end of the course. “Most people don’t realize they can be a part of something like this,” Halasa said of joining political protests. “I want to open their eyes. City to pay $5.9 million to family of Eric Garner Settlement. Officials last night announced a settlement in the Eric Garner police chokehold case. New York City has reached a settlement with the family of Eric Garner, who was killed after being put in a chokehold by police last July, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve the claim over his death, city officials said on Monday. Eric Garner’s death, along with the fatal shooting of an unarmed 18-year-old black man in Ferguson, Missouri, last August by a white police officer, sparked protests around the country by people outraged over police treatment of AfricanAmericans. New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer said
on Monday the settlement with Garner’s family was “in the best interest of all parties,” adding that the city did not admit liability. “I believe that we have reached an agreement that acknowledges the tragic nature of Mr. Garner’s death while balancing my office’s fiscal responsibility to the city,” Stringer said in a statement. A grand jury declined to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo, who placed Garner in a chokehold, a maneuver banned by New York City police. Garner’s death drew widespread outrage after a bystander video showing the deadly confrontation became public. The settlement comes roughly a week after Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he will appoint a special prosecutor to handle investigations when civilians are killed during confrontations with police. REUTERS

The Department of Sanitation in New York (DSNY) collected 29.6 tons of debris, including 7.6 tons of paper that was recycled after Friday’s parade celebrating the U.S. women’s soccer team and their World Cup win. According to Grow NYC, residents produce 12,000 tons of waste each day, less than half of what was produced during an hour-and-15-minute-long parade.
Comparatively, this parade was greener than most. In the past, the debris collection has been as high as 57.4 tons, which came following the New York Yankees World Series win in 1999. Friday’s parade did out-debris the parade for the ’94 New York Rangers Stanley Cup win by 6.4 tons. Visit Metro.us to check out a video of the parade aftermath. MEGAN FU

Meet the man behind Detective Boogaloo The draw. West Philly native Jamar Nicholas’ comics are on the rise with “Hip-Hop Cop. Jamar Nicholas, 42, is a West Philly native and current resident of the Oak Lane neighborhood who grew up aspiring to be a cartoonist. He currently pens “Hip-Hop Cop” for Metro. “I’ve never wanted to do anything else,” he said. Metro caught up with Nicholas to hear about his outlook on the world of comics.

into submission. Or they say, “That’s something I can’t approach so I’m not going to try.” I’m not going to think in those terms.
Why are you publishing it one strip a day? To me, it’s definitely a challenge … you have this really small space every day to tell a story — and end it on something interesting. Also, not all comics have a punchline at the end. I enjoy the challenge of creating stories that are funny in a different way than you’re used to reading.
Some readers said Detective Boogaloo has stereotypical images of African-Americans. Your response? If you open up the Metro to my comic and see a rapper with a gold chain, you could say, “Where are the positive images?” wherein you’re reacting to a character with a unique voice in a bigger story. There is balance in my work. I’ve done work about anti-bullying and positive black images. It offended me to think that someone would believe I would do something so negative and put it out into the world. Everybody has an opinion. I just hope you give it a chance. … My work is like that, you just have to ride with it for a little bit.
Making comics Nicholas adapted Geoffrey Canada’s famed memoir “Fist Stick Knife Gun” into a graphic novel, and expects to publish “Leon: Protector of the Playground” this fall. He also works as an adjunct professor at Drexel University, Moore College of Art and Design and Arcadia University.
What is the genre of your work? Detective Boogaloo is basically a hip-hop soap opera. That scratches one of my creative itches, because I’m a Philly kid who grew up in the ’70s in the beginning of hiphop, so this is my love letter to hip-hop that

Currently, Nicholas’ is publishing “Detective Boogaloo: Hip-Hop Cop,” a neo-noir serialized comic strip that is being printed right here in Metro (see page 19). It’s a story set in 2002 about a break-dancing detective investigating a rapper named “Ice Tre,” who resembles Nelly.

Five things you need to know

Obama commutes 46 prison sentences, still shy of estimates
President Barack Obama reduced the prison sentences of 46 inmates on Monday, bringing the commutations he has granted to a total of 89, a number still far shy of the thousands his administration originally estimated it would make. Obama has said reforming the complex U.S. criminal justice system to reduce the number of people serving long sentences for nonviolent drug crimes is one of the top priorities for his remaining time in office. “Their punishments didn’t fit the crimes,” Obama said
of those whose sentences he commuted in a video statement on Monday. Obama said he hoped to work with a bipartisan group of lawmakers on criminal justice reforms, but so far, legislative fixes have stalled in Congress. With only 5 percent of the world’s population, the United States accounts for about 25 percent of the world’s prison population, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. The Justice Department launched a program in April 2014 to systematically identify prisoners serving time for crimes they were sentenced for under laws that have since been changed to carry less severe punishments. Traditionally, presidents have granted pardons or commutations on a one-off basis. REUTERS
‘Heading’ bans in soccer may not be enough to stop concussions
Wisconsin Gov. Walker says he’s running for president in 2016
Outlawing “heading the ball” during soccer games may reduce the rate of concussions, but eliminating player-onplayer contact would help more, suggests a new study. The findings challenge recent calls to ban “heading,” which is when players hit soccer balls with their heads, the study’s lead author told Reuters Health. “Intuitively, it sounds great,” said Dawn Comstock of the Colorado School of Public Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. “It even has the word ‘head’ in it.”
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced on Monday he was joining the crowded Republican field seeking the White House in the November 2016 presidential election. “America needs new, fresh leadership with big, bold ideas from outside of Washington to actually get things done,” Walker said in a newly released video. “I am running for president to fight and win for the American people.”

Austin cop placed on leave for fatal shooting
An Austin, Texas, police officer has been placed on administrative leave after fatally shooting a suspect who was trying to flee and appeared to be reaching for a weapon, police said. Police said they had received a complaint that a man in his 60s had been stalking a woman. “Officers instructed him to place his hands behind his back, at that point the suspect took off and fled running. As he is running, it can be seen on the officer’s in-car camera that he is reaching into the back of his shorts, grabbing for an item,” said Austin Assistant Police Chief Brian Manley. REUTERS
Race on to develop ‘pot Breathalyzer’
As cannabis bans are relaxed in more U.S. states, the race is on to develop an instant roadside Breathalyzer for police to test drivers who may be taking the “high” road. Vancouver-based Cannabix Technologies Inc., founded by a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, expects to be first out of the gate with a “pot Breathalyzer” — a handheld device similar to those used to detect alcohol. Cannabix won’t give an estimate of when its product might go on sale, but it has a prototype undergoing inhouse testing. REUTERS

Did I mention the $59 price tag? This is a LOT of machine for not a lot of money. The Stauer Centurion Hybrid sports a heavy-duty alloy body, chromed and detailed with a rotating bezel that allows you to track direction. The luminous hour and minute hands mean you can keep working into the night. And the dual digital displays give this watch a hybrid ability. “Fraction Of An Inch” Success And Failure With Popular Vital Information All Knee Arthritis Sufferers ANY treatment. EVER. In fact - if you do start hearing over-the-top, exaggerated claims like: “cure for knee arthritis” or “eliminates all pain” or “works for everyone” you should run like heck. But the fact of the matter is: If you qualify for the treatment you are about to discover, there is a good chance you may be able to relieve some or much of your pain. I know because thousands of knee arthritis sufferers... just like you... have already found the relief you are looking for. And even better - this might work for you if your pain is new... or if you have advanced knee arthritis that has made it difficult to even walk. Here’s The Treatment And The Embarrassing Moment The treatment is called viscosupplemtation. If you have not heard of this treatment - I will explain how it might help you in just a moment. If you have heard of it - or even had this treatment without good results - this information is a “must read.”
Advanced Knee Arthritis Treatment Offers New Hope For Pain Sufferers In New York City
Nothing Spreads The Word Like Caring Doctors and Results - Knee arthritis sufferers have swarmed the OsteoRelief Center in Manhattan, NYC and Norhtern New j Jersey ever since word got out of their advanced medical procedure for knee arthritis
This all sounds great - in theory. But there is a BIG problem with this treatment. Allow Me To Explain... While doing research on this treatment, I traveled to a medical clinic in Northern N.J. right outside NYC (they now have clinics in mid town and downtown).. This clinic had an excellent reputation and I got to speak not only with doctors but with several patients who ranted and raved about the results. Many said they had tried countless other treatments Here is why: When you in the past... including have arthritis, one of the things viscosupplementation... but that happens is the lubricating nothing worked until they had fluid in your joints deceases. viscosupplemtation at this This causes joint surfaces to clinic. rub, then grind against each I was skeptical, so I asked other which causes swelling and pain eventually eating way one of the doctors why. PRECISE. In other words, the doctor must be very accurate and actually get the lubricating fluid precisely into the arthritic joint space or the treatment will be rendered useless. Many doctors do not want to admit it - but it is very easy to miss the joint space and alter the treatment results. In fact, research shows that doctors doing these types of joint procedures without advanced imaging may miss the joint space as much as 30% of the time.
Technology To The Rescue Thankfully technology is solving this problem. How? It’s making doctors much more accurate and this treatment much more effective. Advanced imaging is now available that allows doctors to actually see directly into the joint space and watch the treatment. Doctors can see, or check, if the lubricating fluid goes directly into the joint space - or misses. The doctor knows if the applied treatment has been a success... or failure... INSTANTLY.

By Matt Edgar-Health Writer Manhattan - In just a moment I’m going to tell you about a very “candid” and somewhat embarrassing moment I had with a doctor. A moment most doctors would not want you to know about. As I reveal what happened in that moment - it will become clear to you not only why this doctor has so much success treating knee arthritis pain... but you will also discover a possible way to relieve some or all of your pain, too. But before I tell you all that - let me ask you this: How would you like to finally have a real medical solution for your knee arthritis pain? Not some scam sold on an infomercial or the internet. A real medical treatment that has already worked for countless people just like you and is covered by most insurance and medicare? Can you imagine what it would feel like to be able to eliminate enough of your pain and stiffness so you can get out of bed without pain and go for walks and even do things like play golf or tennis? Authorities said on Monday they had arrested the son of a Boston police captain who was building bombs in his apartment and planned to attack a crowded university campus cafeteria on behalf of the Islamic State militant group. Alexander Ciccolo, 23, was arrested on July 4 for the unlawful receipt of multiple guns, the U.S. Justice Department said in a news release. His indictment was unsealed on

Monday. The college he intended to target was not disclosed. Ciccolo has received mental health treatment since childhood, according to sources familiar with the family. His father recently alerted authorities to his concerns about his son’s activities, the sources said. FBI agents put Ciccolo under surveillance after being alerted to some of his posts on social media.
They watched him buy at least one pressure cooker at a Walmart store in North Adams, Massachusetts, according to an affidavit by FBI Special Agent Paul Ambrogio. Pressure-cooker bombs were used in the attacks on the Boston Marathon in 2013, killing three and injuring 264 people. Ciccolo is accused of being a supporter of Islamic State. Last month, officers in Boston shot Usaamah Abdullah Rahim, whom they suspected of planning to behead police officers on behalf of Islamic State. Rahim, a 26-year-old security guard, threatened officers with a large knife and was shot and killed after ignoring orders to drop the weapon, according to court papers filed by the FBI. REUTERS

Mysterious Pluto looms large and turns out to be larger than expected as NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft wraps up a nearly decade-long journey, with a close flyby on track for Tuesday, scientists said on Monday. The nuclear-powered probe was in position to pass dead center of a 60-by-90-mile target zone between the orbits of Pluto and its primary moon, Charon, at 7:49 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, said managers at New Horizons mission control center, located at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory outside of Baltimore. Sabine Raymonvil, 30, who admitted to appearing in pornographic films before becoming a police officer, appeared in graphic films with a convicted rapist, New York Daily News reports. Raymonvil was featured in some clips with porn businessman Emerson Callum and cameraman Lavont Flanders — who was also a former

Interview. Director Asif Kapadia talks about how his documentary “Amy” made his friends cry. Asif Kapadia didn’t know much about Amy Winehouse before he made “Amy,” the acclaimed new documentary about the late musician’s life. In a way, that’s a good thing: His film recreates what it’s like to discover her for the first time. What you see is not the drug-addicted megastar who became a fixture of tabloids and late night one-liners. You see a funny, charismatic musical genius destroyed by a level of fame she never thought she could handle. It’s striking, especially for Americans who didn’t know her until she was a tabloid fixture, to see the young, bubbly Amy Winehouse. With Amy, the first thing that stood out in [manager Nick Shymansky]’s footage was how funny she was and just comfortable,

unpushy Asif was,” Shymansky says. “Everyone who had tried to talk to me had been very pushy. I wasn’t sure about it at first. I found that Asif wasn’t looking for a hook — he wasn’t trying to get something done quickly. I was given time to come round. By the time I got into a recording booth, I felt I had a relationship with Asif — that this was the most comfortable I was ever going to feel getting into a booth and talking about Amy.”
It wasn’t easy to convince Winehouse’s friends and family to help out on “Amy.” But Nick Shymansky, her manager, found himself eager to help Kapadia out. “I was surprised by how

happy. I showed a really early cut to some friends, and they all cried in the beginning. They didn’t particularly cry at the ending because they knew how it ended. Afterwards, I asked why they were crying. They said, “Because we’d never seen her happy before.” All everyone remembers was her in the latter stages, and in the U.S., that’s all you saw. She was not the same person after she became famous.
We wanted to show her doing really simple, mundane, ordinary things, so you realize she was this ordinary, down-to-earth, down-the-road girl and not put her on a pedestal and turn her into a megastar. Once that happens, people become less human and easier to make fun of, easier to attack. The home movie footage creates a lot of intimacy. What’s interesting about
17
Nick and her friend Lauren’s material is it’s really intimate. It’s also something to do with the cameras they’re using. They’re not cameraphones. They’re home video cameras, so you have to hold them up to your eye. If
you hold it up to your eye, and you’re talking to Amy, she’s looking straight at us, into the lens. That’s another level of intimacy. She’s talking to the audience. We are the friend, we are Nick, we are Lauren, we are the husband, we are the paparazzi. The audience changes their point of view with Amy throughout the film. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Rachel Platten on fighting her way to the top Interview. The pop star wrote her hit “Fight Song at one of the lowest points in her life. Rachel Platten performed her hit “Fight Song last month to a stadium crowd of 50,000 people at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia alongside Taylor Swift. “I was perched below the stage waiting to be lifted up onto it and Taylor was introducing the song, talking about how much it meant to her, Platten tells us. “I heard the crowd, saw the lights and it just felt amazing. It was a dream come true.
Reaching her breaking point It wasn’t too long ago that Platten was actually contemplating giving up music altogether. The 34-year-old singer had been pursuing a music career for several years and her “big break didn’t look like it was ever going to happen. “It didn’t seem like there were a lot of reasons to keep going, she says.

Platten first started her music career in New York, living in Greenwich Village. “I lived with my childhood best friend and a friend of hers, she says. “They would come into my room and sit on my bed while I played them music. They’d suggest lyric ideas or help me make posters. It was really fun. But her life was far from perfect. To pay her rent, Platten worked a string of jobs, many of which she got fired from. “I worked at a fashion magazine that was very ‘Devil Wears Prada,’ I was an awful waitress, I worked as a consultant and as an analyst, Platten says.

“Doors kept closing and it was becoming harder and harder. I started doubting myself. I wrote ‘Fight Song’ as this declaration to not give up on myself. I was still going to believe in myself no matter what.’ The song has now been in the Billboard Top 20 for more than a month and even went to No. 1 on iTunes, ahead of, yes, Taylor Swift.

Far from ďŹ nished Even now, the singer doesn’t feel like she’s “made it.â€? “I don’t even know what that means!â€? she says. “I’m just so grateful that people are identifying with something I believe in so firmly.â€? Platten’s EP is out now, and she says she is putting the finishing touches on her first full-length album. “The songs touch on a range of emotions, but all of them come from a really honest place in my heart,â€? she says. “There’s a song on my EP called ‘Congratulations’ that I literally wrote mid-fight with a friend. Shining the light on sunscreen What you don’t know about staying protected in the sun.
MARIANNE HAYES @metronewyork letters@metro.us
Ever try to make sense of a sunscreen label? Unless you’re a chemistry major, the ingredients leave most of us dumbfounded. Now that summer is in full force, selecting the best sunblock for your outdoor activities is key to protecting your skin from sun damage. We checked in with Dr. Dendy Engelman of Manhattan Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery about choosing the right formula for you.
What are my options?
Sunscreen falls into two categories: chemical blockers and physical blockers. Chemical blockers are ones that require a chemical reaction to occur before they can actually be effective. “These are the sunscreens that, when you look at the label, have ingredients that sound significantly chemicaly and have very long names,” says Engelman, adding that chemical blockers are considered safe for everyday use. “They go on very smoothly and are very transparent, so a lot of people like these.” But if it’s strength you’re after, physical blockers are superior. Unlike chemical-based varieties, these types of sunscreen sit on the surface of the skin to block the sun’s dangerous effects. When scanning labels, look for elements
like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. “It’s a really important distinction to make because physical blockers are more effective,” says Engelman. So why isn’t everyone using physical blockers? According to Engelman, it all goes back to the old stereotype of the lifeguard on the beach with the white nose. “The truth is that physical blockers do leave a little bit of a white sheen, even in the most micronized of particles,” she says. “But more and more [researchers] are doing a beautiful job of reformulating the particle size so that it doesn’t make you look completely white.”
Try babying your skin Looking for a gentle
brand that still offers serious sun protection? Engelman advises her patients to baby their skin — literally. “A lot of the baby versions of sunscreens are great, like Neutrogena’s Pure & Free Baby and Blue Lizard’s baby versions,” she says. “If you’re in the aisle at the drugstore and feeling overwhelmed, look at the baby versions. They tend to be more of the physical blockers and are great.”
Reapplying is key Once women have applied their makeup, most of them don’t want to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Engelman suggests pow-
der blockers, many of which come in a variety of shades to match your skin tone. Simply dust it on and go. “These are amazing,” she says. “You can keep them in your purse — travel with them. You just shake the powder onto the brush and apply it. It’s perfect because it’s not greasy, but it still protects your skin.”
How much SPF is enough? Historically, it’s been said that anything higher than SPF 15 isn’t really making much of a difference. But Engelman says that reaching for a higher SPF isn’t a bad idea. “According to the American Academy of Dermatology, SPF 15 is inadequate,” she says. “We recommend wearing a minimum of SPF 30 or higher.” Why? According to Engelman, the majority of us don’t actually wear the amount of sunscreen that’s worn during studies with test subjects. “They usually are using boatloads more than what most humans are going to apply,” she says. How much more? Engelman says that to get the full SPF protection on the label, you’d have to use enough sunscreen to fill up a shot glass. So applying a normal amount of SPF 50, for example, is realistically only equivalent to an SPF 25 level of protection.

Who’s calling the shots on the movie set of your life? ISTOCK
In the movie “Stranger Than Fiction,” Harold Crick is a robotic IRS agent who begins to question his mundane existence when he hears a mysterious voice narrating his life and foreshadowing his death. When he discovers that he is not the master of his own destiny, but rather a fictional character, Crick tracks down his author and convinces her to rewrite the ending of his story. While both strange and fictional, Crick’s journey speaks to our capacity to question the roles we play and the scripts we’ve been given and reclaim our personal narratives. Sometimes the roles we play and their societally prescribed scripts don’t really serve us. Yet we keep acting them out simply because we’ve become accustomed to the motions and
memorized our lines. Often, we come by these roles and scripts honestly enough. According to behavioral psychology, we begin to assimilate scripts as young children, when we are most susceptible to messages both from our life as well as the fictional examples in movies and television shows. Many of us continue to be influenced throughout our lifetimes by scripts without questioning whether they make sense, who’s really writing them and whether or not we’re right for the roles we’ve taken on. To find out whether you’re playing the right parts, it’s time to interrogate your screenwriter. Familial expectations and societal values may lead us to choose a career, lifestyle or partner that is out of sync with our
authentic talents and interests. If you’re not the one calling the shots, then pull a Harold Crick and convince the powers that be to let you change the plot. A poorly written script of internalized negative messages can be just as harmful. If your internal monologue consists of lines like, “You’ll never succeed at anything,” or “I must do everything perfectly or not at all,” it may prevent you from stepping into and mastering roles that highlight your natural abilities. Chucking out the script and starting over can be daunting, especially if you’re several chapters (or maybe even halfway) through your story. But it’s never too late — otherwise, you risk living a fictitious life that will leave you feeling like a stranger to your authentic self.
This column is the third in a series about looking at your life as a story. Learn more about this technique in Kim Schneiderman’s new book, “Step Out of Your Story,” available now.

FSU players banned from bars
Facing mounting pressure to do something (anything) to prevent his players from further harming themselves and others, Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher will not allow his players to go out to bars and locations that serve alcohol, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. This offseason, two Florida State players have been arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly punching women. The FSU football program had already been under a microscope after former quarterback Jameis Winston was accused of sexual assault.

Brotherly love in Jersey MLS. The WrightPhillips brothers are enjoying their New York summer together. It has been three weeks now since Shaun WrightPhillips, the former English international, has been training with the New York Red Bulls. The older brother of Bradley, a star forward with the Red Bulls and last year’s leading goal scorer in MLS, Shaun is beginning to look like a player who might just call New York his home for a bit longer. In town for his little brother’s wedding a few weeks ago, Shaun is technically with the Red Bulls to work on his fitness as he is now out of contract after spending last year in England with Queens Park Rangers. But while his future with the Red Bulls remains coy — the club maintains he is just here for fitness — sources tell Metro that the Red Bulls have had discussions with Shaun about contract details and there is a possibility that he signs this summer. But for now, Bradley is happy to be with his brother on the playing field again. It has been awhile. He remembers being with his brother for a season when both were at Manchester City. then and Bradley recalls the joy when the brothers got on the field together. Bradley was a young player then and his brother had established himself as a rising star for club and country. “He loves New Jersey, he loves where we are, we have lovely neighbors,” Bradley told Metro. “He loves it, there’s nothing to worry about here. It’s great in the summer, lovely.

“He has really taken to it, he likes it here.” Off the field, the two brothers enjoy playing Xbox, including the games “Call of Duty” and “Mortal Kombat.” “I don’t like soccer games, I don’t like
them,” Bradley said. “I want it to do what I’m thinking and the computer just doesn’t do that.” KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer

MLB
The stars will be present in Cincy tonight The National League remains in the lead in the all-time MLB All-Star Game series, owning a 43-40 advantage. But the American League has been doing some serious damage since the beginning of this century and, more specifically, since the new rule that the winning league of each year’s Midsummer Classic would earn homefield advantage in that year’s World Series.
The junior circuit won seven games in a row from 2003-2009. The NL bounced back with three consecutive wins from 2010-12 before the AL won in each of the last two years. So since the homefield advantage rule was implemented, the American League has hosted nine World Series while the National League has hosted just three times. Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park will host the 86th MLB All-Star Game Tuesday (7:30 p.m., Fox) with Houston’s Dallas Keuchel (11-4, 2.23 ERA)

(Lorenzo Cain, Salvador Perez, Alcides Escobar) and a pair of Angels (Mike Trout, Albert Pujols) will be in Ned Yost’s AL starting lineup while Bruce Bochy’s NL lineup is a little more diverse. Washington’s Bryce Harper will hit out of the three-hole with Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt hitting cleanup. Last year’s 5-3 AL victory at Target Field in Minnesota had some controversy as St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright admitted that he gave the retiring Derek Jeter some easy pitches to hit. MATT BURKE
