Trash and dirty water are all that remain of the impressive snow farm. In its heyday during the winter of 2015, the snow farm was about 100 feet tall. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
If you had put money on the possibility of a snowbank lasting until the second week of July, yesterday was the day to cash in. Fourteen days into July and four months removed from the most brutal winter since the 1800s, the Seaport snow farm is no longer. Piles of rancid garbage and city grime are all that remain of a once mighty snow farm that stood at the Tide Street dumping grounds. Managing the epic winter snowfall effectively, they said, would be improbable. Seeing the piles standing in July would be impossible. But the mighty wrath of last winter defied all logic and measurements. There were at least eight massive piles of blizzard bounty, many of them around 100 feet high and as wide as every vacant lot that housed them. Most had melted by the time the warm weather came around, but the Seaport pile was one stubborn snowbank. Yes, my fellow Bostonians, the winter of 2015 is now a memory and the folks who babble endlessly about enduring the Blizzard of ’78 can shovel their stories of heroism and bravery somewhere else. We survived the heaviest snowfall on record throughout the course of the shortest
month of the year. Consider the prospect of 10 feet of snow falling in 25 days. Something like that might happen in Buffalo, New York, or some other unfortunate location in far away lands like Canada, but not here in Boston. Images of the snow farms were otherworldly. Excavators and dump trucks looked like children’s toys on the slopes of these impossible man-made mountains. They made chains where snow was carried up the side of the bank to a plateau, where other heavy machinery would then carry it farther up in order to make room for more loads. Mayor Marty Walsh took to Twitter to express his joy over the melting. He had set up a contest to have lunch with the people who guessed the right date of the pile’s demise. Gov. Charlie Baker also tweeted out a triumphant declaration: “Our nightmare is officially over!” The snow farm held out due to the sludge that coated the top of the pile, absorbing the summer sun and causing the snow to solidify underneath it. Rain was the only weapon that could make a dent in the mass of filth and frozen water. Rejoice, fellow citizens. Pour out a little bit of a drink to the memory of the mighty Seaport snow farm. May it rest in peace in the water cycle and never darken our doorsteps again. NATE HOMAN @METROBOS

ISIS. Boston police captain made nightmare choice to turn in son Having to turn in your own kid is a parent’s worst nightmare. Add in allegations of ISISinspired terror plots and a parent on the police force and the nightmare plunges into the depths of surrealistic horror. According to the Boston Herald, this was the fate of Boston Police Capt. Robert Ciccolo and his only son, Alexander Ciccolo. Capt. Ciccolo turned his 23-year-old son over to the FBI after he started talking obsessively about ISIS. Once he accepted that
there was nothing he could do about his son’s obsession, Capt. Ciccolo could only wait until his son, who had a history of mental illness, would take a fascination with violent Islamic ideology too far. According to an FBI affidavit released on Monday, Ciccolo, also known as Ali Al Amriki, was busted with a duffel bag filled with guns as he headed toward his Adams apartment on July 4. He was banned from buying guns after a previous
criminal conviction. He is said to have told the informant about plans to commit terrorist attacks involving IEDs like pressure-cooker bombs like the ones used in the 2013 Boston Marathon attack “in places where large numbers of people congregate, like college cafeterias,” and had Molotov cocktails. The affidavit said he had a knife with a five-inch blade and a receipt from the pressure cooker in his wallet. During a routine medi-
cal screening at the Franklin House of Correction following his arrest, Ciccolo “grabbed a pen and forcefully stabbed the nurse in the head, leaving a hole in the nurse’s skin and causing the pen to break in half.” Ciccolo appeared in federal court Tuesday to face charges of being a felon in possession of firearms, which carries a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Painful Police catch man Varicose Veins suspected of years of sexual assaults & Swollen Legs? Charged. Authorities finally caught a man they believe has committed sexual assaults since 2006. A former Uber driver charged with raping a passenger in December evaded authorities for almost a decade in a slew of other sexual assaults in South Boston and the Esplanade along the Charles River. Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley announced Tuesday that DNA evidence, witness statements and “unmistakable patterns of conduct” linked Alejandro Done, 46, of the South End, with at least four instances of sexual assault. Each of these instances involved women who were walking alone on weekends during the summer months. He described these random attacks as vicious and predatory acts from a dangerous person.
The instances took place on July 29, 2006, in Joe Moakley Park in South Boston; June 16, 2007, at the Esplanade; July 27, 2007, at the Esplanade; July 13, 2009, at the Esplanade; and June 23, 2009, at Prebble Circle in South Boston. “When you see five instances, four linked with DNA and others under investigation, where someone who does this half a dozen times, they are a very dangerous, violent sexual predator,” Conley said. Authorities finally got a break on Monday when they entered his DNA into the National DNA Index. “Over the years, while we did not identify the person who did this, we never forgot that several women have been horribly victimized,” State Police Colonel Richard McKeon said. “We got a dangerous felon off the street who preyed on people on the Esplanade and in South Boston,” Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said. “In 2006, it made the community on edge and we were

Technology. Kendall Square bike counter aims to promote cycling Cyclists are constantly peddling through the Boston area, and with the summer weather more people are choosing biking over taking public transportation or driving. That’s why Cambridge installed the “eco-totem” cyclist counter in Kendall Square to tally the number of cyclists that ride by the area each day. The counter also displays the cumulative totals since its installation. The city of Cambridge representatives said they would like to promote cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly way of getting around. This is believed to be an important part of the city’s efforts to improve mobility and protect the environment. “I’ve been biking on this road for 10 years” said resident Raymond Salvo. “It’s hard for me to believe that more people don’t bike because the benefits are so well known. It’s cheaper,

faster and healthier,” he said. Cambridge reports that the percentage of Cantabrigians who commute by bicycle has been rising steadily over the past two decades. Local surveys suggest that from seven to nine percent of Cambridge residents commute to work by bike. Since the counter was first installed on June 23, there
have been more than 28,200 counts. The counter aims to make the statement that “bicyclists count,” analyze bicyclists’ patterns depending on seasonal, daily, monthly or weekly changes, and help facilitate crash-rate analysis. Passing cyclists had mixed feelings about the counter. “In my opinion, the bike lanes are way more effective in encouraging people to cycle. They make it safer and more reasonable,” said Jeff Peters, a 66-yearold Cambridge resident. It’s possible that the counter isn’t the motivating tool behind the increased numbers of bikers. “I guess it’s kind of like a pat on the back,” said David Southerland, 22, a cyclist heading to lunch. “But I already bike every day. I’m all for biking as an alternative to other forms of transportation … Not because of a counter, but because of all the other benefits” KEELA SWEENEY

Hub among most likely to feel impact of climate change Study. A Weather Channel study ranked the city sixth among vulnerable urban locales nationwide. Brace yourselves, Boston. Climate change is coming. As a dense coastal city that knows the power of Mother Nature when it comes to ungodly piles of snow, the gradual warming and moistening of the planet is slated to hit the Hub especially hard. That’s according to a study produced by the Weather Channel, which lists Boston sixth among a list of cities most likely to feel the impacts of climate change. “More extreme precipita-
tion events,” the study reads — like, for example, the record-breaking snowfall we experienced, “are expected across Massachusetts and up and down the eastern seaboard — the same areas potentially in trouble from rising sea levels and future storms.” Authors of the weather media giant’s study used six metrics in making their rankings, among them how catastrophic rising sea levels could be and how vulnerable an area is to “urban heat islands,” or cities that are hotter than rural areas. Climate scientists Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech University, Michael Mann of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center and David Easterling of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information contributed to
What’s Boston doing? The study cites two city initiatives designed to combat climate change: Grow Boston Greener, a city grant-sponsored campaign to plant 100,000 new trees by 2020, and Boston Complete Streets, a program that aims to spur road design that caters to bikers, walkers and public transportation.

Iran deal faces skeptics Republicans lined up to denounce the deal. Presidential candidate Lindsey Graham, a senator from South Carolina, called it a terrible deal that would make matters worse. Sen. Marco Rubio suggested he would reintroduce sanctions if elected to the White House.
Landmark Iran nuclear deal reached Agreement. It will now be debated in Congress, but Obama said he would veto any measure to block it.

“This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction. ... We should seize it.” Obama
Iran and six major world powers reached a nuclear deal on Tuesday, capping more than a decade of negotiations with an agreement that could transform the Middle East. President Barack Obama hailed a step toward a “more hopeful world” and Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said it proved that “constructive engagement works.” But Israel pledged to do what it could to halt what it called an “historic surrender.” Under the deal, sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union and United Nations will be lifted in return for Iran agreeing long-term curbs on a nuclear program that the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb. Iran will mothball for at least a decade the majority of its centrifuges used to enrich uranium and sharply reduce its low-enriched uranium stockpile. The agreement is a political triumph for both Obama,
who has long promised to reach out to historic enemies, and Rouhani, a pragmatist elected two years ago on a vow to reduce the isolation of his nation of 80 million people. Both face skepticism from powerful hardliners at home in nations that referred to each other as “the Great Satan” and a member of the “Axis of Evil.” “Today is the end to acts of tyranny against our nation and the start of cooperation with the world,” Rouhani said in a televised address. “This is a reciprocal deal. If they stick to it, we will. The Iranian nation has always observed its promises and treaties.” Delighted Iranians danced in the streets of Tehran, while motorists sounded car horns and flashed victory signs in celebration after the announcement of a deal they hope will end years of sanctions and isolation. The Republican-controlled Congress has 60 days to review the accord, but if it votes to reject it Obama can use his veto, which can be overridden only by two-thirds of lawmakers in both houses. That means dozens of Obama’s fellow Democrats would have to rebel against one of their president’s signature achievements to kill it, an unlikely prospect.
Leading Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called the deal “an important step that puts the lid on Iran’s nuclear programs.” The Senate was not expected to vote on the deal before September. While the main negotiations were between the United States and Iran, the four other U.N. Security Council permanent
members, Britain, China, France and Russia, are also parties to the deal, as is Germany. Iran is the predominant Shi’ite Muslim power, hostile both to Israel and to Washington’s Sunni Muslim-ruled Arab friends, particularly Saudi Arabia. Allies of Riyadh and Tehran have fought decades of sectarian proxy wars in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. REUTERS

US spacecraft sails by Pluto, capping 9-year journey
A U.S. spacecraft sailed past the tiny dwarf planet Pluto in the most distant reaches of the solar system on Tuesday, capping a journey of 3 billion miles that began nine and a half years ago. NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft passed by the ice-and-rock planetoid and its entourage of five moons at 7:49 a.m. Eastern. The event culminated an initiative to ex-
plore the solar system that the space agency embarked upon more than 50 years ago. “It’s truly a mark in human history,” John Grunsfeld, NASA’s associate administrator for science, said from the mission control center at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory outside Baltimore. Family of NY choke-hold victim renews calls to charge officer
Colo. movie massacre trial to hear closing arguments
The family of Eric Garner, a black man who died after a white police officer put him in a choke hold a year ago, renewed calls to criminally charge the police officer on Tuesday, a day after the family reached a $5.9 million settlement with New York City. A grand jury in December declined to indict the officer, Daniel Pantaleo, who placed Garner, 43, in the choke hold, a maneuver banned by the New York City Police Department. A video that a bystander took of the incident sparked protests across the country over police treatment of minority groups.
Jurors will hear closing arguments on Tuesday in the trial of Colorado movie massacre gunman James Holmes, as they prepare to decide whether he was legally insane or a calculating mass murderer when he killed a dozen people. Prosecutors and the defense have been allotted two hours each to present their case by Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour, after testimony in the almost three-monthlong capital trial ended last week.

Wal-Mart sued for denying health care to gay worker’s wife
A Wal-Mart Stores employee sued the retailer on Tuesday, saying its prior policy of denying health insurance to the spouses of gay employees violated gender discrimination laws. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Boston, seeks nationwide classaction status. Wal-Mart, the largest private U.S. employer, began offering health insurance benefits to same-sex spouses last year, after the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013 struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to married gay couples. SeaWorld is the aquatic animal theme park that has been the target of PETA criticism and a growing campaign to shut down its three locations in Orlando, Florida; San Antonio and San Diego. “For three years, a man calling himself ‘Thomas Jones’ has been attending PETA protests at SeaWorld and organizational meetings, trying to get close to PETA employees,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says on its website. “PETA’s work to educate people about SeaWorld has apparently made the company so upset that it created a corporate espionage campaign,” the group alleged. McComb, a human resources employee at SeaWorld San Diego. SeaWorld has remained mum on the allegations, refusing to discuss Jones/ McComb. McComb hung up when reached on his cellphone. The theme park defends itself further on its website: “We care for 30 killer whales, the largest killer whale population in a zoological facility worldwide. They are our family. “We are a global leader in the care and understanding of this species and are accredited by the world’s foremost professional zoological organizations. We apply best practices in behavioral training, environmental enrichment, preventive health, veterinary medicine and facilities design and management. “As with all animals at SeaWorld, the whales live in safe, sophisticated habitats, receive world-class medical care and are continually engaged socially, mentally and physically. “These animals are healthy and well adapted to their surroundings, a fact that is evident to our zoological experts through their constant interaction and observation 24 hours per day.”

In quick succession, the comedian was hospitalized due to a bacterial infection, lost her mother in a freak accident and then was diagnosed with cancer. Laura Linney plays his unhappy housekeeper, whose son strikes up a friendship with her boss. It could have been a nothing part for the acclaimed actress, but even if
Having fun for a change
In “Mr. Holmes,” Laura Linney plays housekeeper to old Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen).
Linney recently wrapped on a film unlike most of the serious dramas she does: the second “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. How did she find it? “I had a great time! I loved it! I had a wonderful time! It was really fun!” she says. “I didn’t have to cry, there was no nudity, there was no deep, deep psychological pain going on for my character. It was filmed at home. I just had a ball. It was nice to skip to
work and skip home.” Though she loves heavy movies like “Mr. Holmes,” they can be taxing. “There was a lot going on. There was an accent,” she explains. “It was wonderful. But there was sadness there, and fear. When you inhabit that all day long you learn how to slip in and out of it so it doesn’t contaminate your life. But it does cost a little bit. You’re tired when you go home. You have to access things that aren’t always comfortable. So to be able to do a cartoon film, it was fun!”

it had that would have been fine with her. Linney talks to us about the quiet depths of her role — and the fun the threetime Oscar nominee had making the second “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

I read you’ve been a Holmes nerd since you were a kid. What first got you into him? I think I was so attracted to the character as a young preadolescent just because he was so sexy. Honestly. He was this brilliant loner-musician-drug addict — heartthrob, basically. He’s a brilliant, brilliant man
who’s mysterious and very detached and not connected to anyone. Any woman would find that very attractive. Your character doesn’t have a ton of screentime, but she still has a lot going on. I would have done the movie even if the character didn’t in-
trigue me. Quite honestly, that was secondary to being able to work with Bill [Condon], being able to work with Ian, being able to go to England, being in a Sherlock Holmes movie. I couldn’t have cared less what the character was. However, much to my delight, the character’s really interesting. She’s a war widow. She’s struggling to normalize her life and maintain a relationship with her young child. She’s a housekeeper who was probably never a housekeeper before. There’s her loneliness, her hard work, her disorientation of being widowed. It’s what happened after the war, how it tore families apart, how it relocated people.
Did you meet McKellen back when you two did “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City” back in 1993? We both have Armistead Maupin in common. Armistead has always been a great friend of Ian’s, and I became very close to Armistead through making those series. My son’s middle name is Armistead; I named him after him. I would spend 10 minutes with [Ian] here, 15 minutes with him there, over a long period of time. But I never knew him very well. So now I was able to spend time with him and claim him as my own. Beyond the bank robbers Charlestown is turning away from its criminal past to a hipper future. LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
Charlestown’s reputation as being ground zero for bank robbers aside, this neighborhood is packed with history and has some of Boston’s most interesting traditional architecture. That, and its proximity to Boston proper, is what makes it one of the area’s hottest neighborhoods to live in. “People have been flocking here in recent years,” says David Stenberg, senior vice president of Hammond Real Estate. “That’s been the
What you can get Currently on the market on Sullivan Street is a threebedroom, three-bathroom penthouse, which is part of an 1880-built multifamily. It has a private entrance and about 2,200 square feet of living space. The open-plan living/dining area has nine-foot ceilings and a gas fireplace. The master bedroom suite features a walk-in closet, an additional sitting/reading area with a bay window and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and a custom-built glass shower. case for a couple of years, but it’s certainly been true for the first half of this year. Homes have been selling at a very fast pace in Charlestown. “I report on different neighborhoods around Boston and without question Charlestown has been hottest this year,” he continues. “The prices still aren’t as high as the Back Bay, South End or Beacon Hill, and the housing stock is similar.”

A glimpse at what you can own on Sullivan Street. ERIC LEVIN OF E. LEVIN STUDIOS
Since the housing market recovery this decade, trying to find a home for sale in Charlestown over the past couple of years has increasingly become a game of cat and mouse: When a condo
hits the market, it’s usually snapped up immediately, which means prices have increased and will likely remain strong for sellers. “I just updated my midyear

report,” says Stenberg, “and the average condo price in Charlestown is $620,000. A year ago it was $590,000 and in June 2011 it was $450,000. That’s a 40 percent increase.”
Home buyers, don’t despair There is one piece of good news: 2015 saw an increase in homes up for sale. “My
figures for the end of June 2011 show 119 condos available. This year there were 26. It is still limited, but that is starting to change. In fact, this year showed an increase, because at the end of June 2014 there were 17 condos,” says Stenberg. “We started to see an increase of inventory this spring. While demand is strong, as inventory increases it gives balance between the buyer and seller.”

For second straight year, Revs in a summer swoon MLS. The Revolution are in a major funk halfway through their 2015 season. This summer has not been kind to the Revolution. Since their 2-1 win over the Red Bulls on May 2 at Gillette Stadium, New England (6-9-6) has just one victory (2-0 vs. Chicago on June 13 in Foxborough) in its last 12 league matches (1-7-4). That bleak stretch includes a 4-1 shellacking in New Jersey on Saturday in which the Red Bulls (7-6-5) took a 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes. It was the Revs’ second straight defeat by three goals (3-0 at Dallas on July 4), which in the sport of soccer basically qualifies as a blowout. Some actual good news for the Revs is that other than DC United, which has an MLS-best 35 points, the other eight teams in the Eastern Conference can be described as mediocre at best. Believe it or not, New England is still hanging on to the sixth spot (the last playoff berth) in the East after being in second-place before this nightmare began. The Revs are only two points behind the secondplace Red Bulls (7-6-5) and are six points ahead of last-place Chicago (5-9-3). If there was any doubt as to who was the Revolution’s most valuable player, midfielder Jermaine Jones’ extended absence (out since May 31 with a groin injury) has quickly settled that debate. Still, soccer is about all

Celtics land athletic Jones for next to nothing The Celtics more or less acquired forward Perry Jones III for free from Oklahoma City Tuesday as the Thunder will rid themselves of $7 million in salary and potential luxury tax problems. Boston gave up a protected 2018 second-round pick in the deal and also acquired a second round pick. They will only have to pay Jones a little over $2 million in 2015-16, as-

suming he makes the team. Thunder star Kevin Durant once said that Jones was “the best athlete in the league” as the former Baylor star can jump out of the gym. The 23-year-old Jones was the 28th overall pick in the 2012 draft and was linked to the Celtics in many mock drafts that summer. The C’s instead selected Syracuse’s Fab Melo, who now plays professionally in Puerto Rico. Jones played exceptionally well early in the 2014-15 season as he filled in for the injured Durant. He scored
a career-high 32 points and grabbed seven boards against the Clippers on Oct. 30, 2014. But there were far too many nights like the one that occurred on Jan. 28, 2015 in an OKC loss to the lowly Knicks in which Jones played big minutes and didn’t produce. In that game, he did not score, had two turnovers and three fouls. Jones quickly fell out of favor with the Thunder coaching staff after that game and only played 20 or more minutes one more time the rest of the season. MATT BURKE
South African publication Times Now reported this week that recently crowned Wimbledon champion Serena Williams and hip-hop star Drake were dating. “Publicly she says they’re just friends but Drake has been by Serena’s side throughout the tournament and when they’ve been away from the public and relaxed, it’s been pretty obvious that they are together,” a source told Times Now. Drake was present at Wimbledon but Williams denied the two were an item last week. “It’s about luck,” she said of Drake’s presence. “You got to keep your luck around. St. Louis still holds the best home and overall record in baseball. They’ve played 42 home games to 47 on the road.
The Dodgers keep on keeping on, and enter the All-Star break with a comfortable 4.5 game lead on the Giants.
The Yankees have also won seven of 10, and it’s helped them grab a little breathing room in the tight AL East.
The Twins posted a 7-3 record in their last 10 games — and dropped a game back from Kansas City.
Overall the Mets have won seven of the last 10 to close to within two games of the Nationals in the NL East race.

Kansas City enters the break hot, as an 8-2 mark in their last 10 kept them from losing any ground to the Twins.
The Angels have taken advantage of the Astros’ struggles by posting a 7-3 mark in their last 10 leading to the break.
The Nationals are still on top of the NL East, but a big series against the Dodgers looms after the break.
Houston has done a ton right this season, but not much right the past week. They dropped their last six.
The division is slipping away for the Cubs, who are unable to keep up with the pace the Cardinals and Pirates are setting.
