Shoppers swarmed at Faneuil Hall Marketplace this week as officials prepare to vote on renovations to improve the iconic tourist attraction. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO
Merchants worry as vote on Faneuil Hall face-lift looms
Renovations. Faneuil Hall is due for some TLC, but local vendors are worried they’ll get the boot.
Faneuil Hall, one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, is a welcome sight after you’ve walked across the brick wind tunnel of Government Center Plaza past City Hall, arguably the ugliest building in the history of concrete. Within the 6.5-acre marketplace, the 49 shops, 18 restaurants and pubs, 35 Colonnade eateries and 44 pushcarts attract almost 20 million people each year. But it’s getting a little stale since the area’s rebirth in the 1900s. As with any renovation project at a historic landmark, the question of progress versus
preservation takes center stage as the Boston Redevelopment Authority gears up to vote on an estimated $40 to $60 million project that will change the face of the marketplace on Thursday night. These plans would bring in some big changes: Among other tweaks and tune-ups, the plans would revamp the Quincy Market food court, put in a new glass-enclosed storefront where a greenhouse stands and would bring in a 200-room hotel in the South Market building, granite slabs where cobblestones sit and new entrances to the markets. Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation acquired the lease to famous three-building complex in September 2011 from the BRA. From there, shop owners lease from Ashkenazy. Confused yet? So are many vendors. Ashkenazy has been making steady renovations throughout the hallowed

halls over the past few years instead of undertaking a broad sweep of improvements with no timetable, which has local merchants concerned. Business owners fear that Ashkenazy will send them packing to make room for national chains. “Since 2011, they stopped
giving us leases,” Harry Haralabatos, owner of Aris BBQ, said. “Whoever’s lease was coming up or running out they wouldn’t renew it except some major players like Pizza Regina and Boston Chowda and a few others like Ned Devine’s upstairs, like, big players got leases. We never got leases.” Faneuil Hall wasn’t always a beautiful destination. In fact, it was in such a state of disrepair that it was targeted for demolition until Bostonians rallied to preserve it in the ’70s. “Quincy Market is one of the best urban renewal projects we’ve remodeled in the whole country,” Boston Pewter owner Jeff Allen said. “We’re looking forward to the renovations. We need them. The property is tired, but we want to be a part of the process, instead of operating in a diminished capacity.” Allen said he’s worried that his 36-year run in Quincy
Market will come to a close once national chains gobble up local merchants. “In the 1980s, we had mostly local businesses here,” Allen said. “When you’re talking about letting our leases end and bringing in national chains, you’re talking about going in the wrong direction.” Haralabatos voiced similar concerns about the possibility of being shipped out in the name of progress. “I am an original vendor,” Haralabatos said. “At the 25-year mark, they commemorated us, and next week it’s going to be 40 years here. My dad is, like, 76 years old, he was 30-something when he got this place.” The BRA will take a vote on the fate of Faneuil Hall on Thursday evening.

New Baby Doe text-to-tip line ‘100 percent anonymous’ Police hope two new tip lines will yield new information on Baby Doe, the unidentified toddler whose body was found in a trash bag on Deer Island in late June.
Tipsters can now use one 24hour phone number (617-3965655) to provide information that could lead police to identify the girl. Investigators have also launched a new anonymous text-to-tip line. Texts sent to the number (67283) will be routed through a third-party, and will not be traceable by police, authorities said.
Users should text the word “GIRL,” followed by any information related to the case. People with information should not be afraid of coming forward, said Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley. “The anonymous text line cannot be used to identify tipsters. Period. It’s 100 percent anonymous,” Conley said. “All we want to do right now is
identify this child and someone out there can do it with one call or one text message.” The state also offers protective services to witnesses who cooperate with police, Conley said. This is the latest attempt by investigators to identify the girl. A computer-generated image of the girl has reached a reported 53 million online. SPENCER BUELL

Walsh to talk sex trafficking, climate change at Vatican When in Rome. Boston’s mayor will meet next week with Pope Francis. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and other urban leaders plan to visit Vatican City this month to attend a conference where they’ll call on the United Nations to consider human trafficking a “crime against humanity” and to adopt sustainable development goals that reflect climate change. Walsh’s office early Wednesday afternoon announced his plans to leave Boston on Sunday, July 19, and return on Thursday, July

The trip to Rome gives Walsh a high-profile platform to make his case on issues he’s made priorities early on in his mayoralty. According to City Hall, Walsh and 10 other mayors launched an effort in February targeting men who solicit sex from women on the streets or online. Walsh has also outlined an action plan featuring steps the city can take to address causes of climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while preparing for its impacts. Obama announces project for more broadband in public housing President Barack Obama announced a pilot project to expand broadband access for people who live in public housing, his administration’s latest push to narrow the “digital divide” between the rich and poor. Working with mayors, Internet service providers and other companies and nonprofit organizations, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will make it cheaper and easier for more than 275,000 low-income households with almost 200,000 children
to get home Internet, the White House said in a statement. Private and public institutions have pledged to invest $70 million in the plan, including a $50,000 federal grant, HUD Secretary Julian Castro told reporters on a conference call. The program will launch in 28 communities, mainly in large cities. In Atlanta, Georgia; Durham, North Carolina; Kansas City, Missouri; and Nashville, Tennessee, Google will provide free Internet connections in some public housing areas. In select markets, Sprint Corp. will offer free wireless broadband access to families with kids in public housing. In Seattle, CenturyLink Inc. will provide broadband service for public housing residents for $9.95 a month for the first year. REUTERS

US says computer hacking forum Darkode dismantled
U.S. authorities working with law enforcement officials abroad have shut down the Darkode online forum used by cybercriminals around the world and charged 12 people linked to the site, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday. U.S. Attorney David Hickton announced the charges in Pittsburgh, and called Darkode “a cyberhornet’s nest of criminal hackers.” “Of the roughly 800 criminal Internet forums worldwide, Darkode represented one of the gravest threats to the integrity of data on computers in the United States,” he said. Greek protesters clash with police at anti-austerity march Violence. Police responded with tear gas, sending hundreds of people fleeing in central Syntagma Square. Greek anti-establishment protesters threw stones and dozens of petrol bombs at police in front of parliament on Wednesday before a key vote on a bailout deal, in some of the most serious violence in more than two years. Garbage cans and a vehicle belonging to a television crew were also set on fire. The clashes were brief, and calm largely returned to the square, with a few hundred protesters staying on under heavy police surveillance. Earlier, thousands took to the streets of Athens in a series of otherwise peaceful marches during the day to protest against the new bail-
out deal that saved Greece from bankruptcy but will impose more reforms on a country already deep in crisis. Once a common sight in protest marches in Greece, clashes with police had been very rare since the leftist Syriza party came to power in January. About 30 people were detained, a police source said. Just before the clashes, protesters marched waving banners reading “Cancel the bailout!” and “No to the policies of the EU, the ECB and the IMF!” Pharmacists pulled down their shutters across Greece and civil servants walked off their jobs in protest in a 24hour strike against reforms. “Further austerity is unacceptable,” said Stavros Koutsioubelis, a spokesman for the ADEDY public sector union, urging lawmakers to reject the deal. Pluto gets its close-up NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft passed by the ice-and-rock planetoid and its entourage of five moons. The event culminated an initiative to survey the solar system that the space agency embarked upon more than 50 years ago. “Pluto just had its first visitor,” President Obama posted on Twitter. “Thanks NASA. It’s a great day for discovery and American leadership.” About 13 hours after its closest approach to Pluto, the last major unexplored body in the solar system, New Horizons phoned home, signaling that it had survived its 31,000 miles per hour (49,000 km per hour) blitz through the Pluto system.

Evangeline Lilly has come a long way from nearly walking away from acting completely following her “Lost” experiences. “I think I made it quite publicly known that I wasn’t sure if I had a future as an actress, if I wanted to pursue it beyond the show,” she says. But she’s come to terms with the industry — which is good, because her “AntMan” role may keep her busy for a while.

I think of this as my main gig, as in I’m a breadwinner for my family, and this is what brings home the bacon. But as far as where I really spend my time and passion, I’ve been doing about a film every two or three years since “Lost” ended, and between [those], all that time is being spent working on my writing.
“Lost” coincided with the rise of TV recaps and online discussions, and you were a particularly popular target. How did that affect you? The whole thing was completely overwhelming for me, and I really didn’t enjoy my job. I had a hard time adjusting to the kind of attention that our show got, the kind of attention that I got. Living so publicly and being so exposed all the time was really uncomfortable for me. My intention was, “I’ll see out my contract, and then I am out. I can’t do this.” What’s really great now is that “Lost” did start this trend in television where people do that about a lot of shows, and they get all that attention now. [Laughs]

••••• The early ’90s saw progressiveminded indie filmmakers using limited resources to flood the market with movies earnestly, sincerely, preachily speaking truth to LGBT power. What they sometimes lacked in artistry and subtlety they made up for in how they chipped away at intolerance. “Tangerine” recalls that era: It was shot with an iPhone 5, and it effectively exists to show that trans people are people, too. But it’s better made than those films, and it holds back on the sincerity, at least until the final minutes, when the impact will prove all the more effective. Indeed, the majority of “Tangerine” mimics the loose cannon, candy-colored, take-no-prisoners energy of its main star, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. She plays Sin-Dee, a West Hollywood trans prostitute who in the opening scene discovers her pimp/boyfriend (James Ransone) is cheating on her. The action
Alexandra (Mya Taylor), as well as a regular customer, Armenian cab driver Razmik (Karren Karagulian), trying to hide his yen for trans trysts from his traditional family. “Tangerine” looks like it was fun to make, and the fun actually translates over to the audience. At the same time, it’s not watered down for mass consumption. Its characters are allowed to be abrasive, and the film is goofy, loud and, most glaringly, very, very filthy. Sin-Dee and Alexandra aren’t the safe, largely sexless characters seen in the likes of “Dallas Buyers Club,” and they aren’t played by nontrans performers like Jared Leto. You can’t show “Tangerine” to your Fox News grandma. You can, however, show it to your cool grandma, who will get a kick out of a film that posits a utopia where we allow those on the fringes to thrive without conforming, at least to society’s more boring traits. MP
“Trainwreck” is the story of a woman who tries settling down after eons playing the field. It is not the story of a slattern who tries settling down because she needs to correct her wicked, wicked ways. For her splashy movie vehicle debut, Amy Schumer quietly — well, with lots of hard-R sex jokes, some of them deployed by John Cena — dismantles if not the entirety of the rom-com genre then some of its more irksome parts. “Trainwreck” knows there’s a distinction between the reactionary, retrograde submission to patriarchal norms it could be and the progressive film sincerely (but hilariously) exploring anxieties that it is. First is the notion that women should be punished
‘Trainwreck’ Director: Judd Apatow Stars: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader Rating: R
•••••
Amy Schumer on is anxious for acting theirabout sex committing drive. to Bill Hader in “Trainwreck.” UNIVERSAL PICTURES
A key scene finds Schumer’s Amy getting into a cab with a date. He tells the driver to make two stops. She casually corrects him: just one. The movie doesn’t treat her like a skank; she’s rocked a bold, smooth move, as cool and confident as anything done by Bogart or Cary Grant. Amy inevitably meets a nice guy (Bill
Hader) she cares about, but at the same time she’s reluctant to part with the fun of what has long been her lifestyle: drinking, toking, banging. It explores the unease of entering into any serious relationship, especially when doing that means parting with things one enjoys doing.
“Trainwreck” isn’t anywhere close to perfect, and in some ways it suffers from first-script syndrome. Oftentimes it’s just a collection of jokes — very funny jokes, and ones that don’t always revolve around the gently sarcastic, insecure Schumer. She’s a generous comedian, regularly allowing her first big movie to be highjacked by others, be they Tilda Swinton, in full-on Tilda glory as Amy’s tyrannical editor, or LeBron James, who plays Aaron’s obligatory rom-com bestie, who, as it happens, is actually LeBron James. “Trainwreck” can be simply content to lightly play off genre conventions, or even embrace them. What it never does is acknowledge that its rom-com star is not your typical rail-thin stick figure, because that’s not a notion even worth bringing up.

Pressed 120 Charles St. Pressed distinguishes itself from its juicing brethren not by its carefully curated Instagram or trendy, healthy menu but by its embrace of technology: It’s the only shop on this list that has its own app. Customers can input their credit card info, order their juice through the app and wait for the push notification that their juice is ready. Next time, try the Selenium, which features beets, strawberries and shiso leaves.

Summer is the best time to stop at the city’s juice bars. Lucky for you, a lot of great options are clustered near Back Bay. Here are our picks. RHIAN SASSEEN
145 Dartmouth St. Jugos, meaning “juice” in Spanish, offers not only juice in its tiny Back Bay Station-adjacent store but also acai bowls, paletas and avocado toast. If that’s too much solid food, though, the company also offers home juice cleanses ranging from one day ($44) to five days ($220). For those of us that want to chew, though, their toast with ricotta, berries and bee pollen is pretty delicious.
4 Petal Various B. Good and Pavement Coffeehouse locations 4 Petal, by the founders of local fastfood chain B. Good, is a little more locavore than most options — not only are its owners small-business owners, but their products are cold-pressed and delivered fresh every morning. The juices, currently in three flavors/colors — green (kale, spinach, celery, apple), orange (carrot, apple, pear, orange, lemon, ginger) and purple (beet, apple, pear, ginger) — are packed into mason jars.
Revolution Juice 150 Huntington Ave. Revolution Juice calls itself on its website “not just a business; it’s a lifestyle.” That tagline might explain why the company offers baby food and cleanses in addition to juice and the requisite acai bowls. Chewing is so passe.

Neon Trees shot up the charts in 2012 with their party-ready songs “Animal” and “Everybody Talks,” but the tracks on their most recent album, “Pop Psychology,” are a bit more melancholy. We talk with lead singer Tyler Glenn about the crazy stories behind the songs, plus how his writing has changed after coming out as gay in 2014.

The band’s new single, “Songs I Can’t Listen To,” is about a breakup but not of the romantic variety. “My best friend of nine years said she was getting married and didn’t think we could be friends anymore,” Glenn tells us. “It broke my heart in a way that’s different from a romantic relationship.” While he says the two haven’t spoken since the sad talk, he did just receive an invite to her wedding, though he hasn’t decided if he’s going to go or not.

Myanmar: The Golden Land One of the least known and least developed countries in Southeast Asia, Myanmar has been taking its first steps toward long-overdue change. Now is the perfect time to visit. Myanmar — known as Burma until 1989 — is the most enigmatic country in Southeast Asia. Enfolded by jungle-clad hills, its central river valleys were for centuries the heartland of a classical civilization little known by the outside world. The democratic reforms which began following Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest in 2010 are now slowly but steadily transforming the country, and the future is looking bright.

Myanmar has more world-class monuments than you could possibly see on a 28-day tourist visa, a wealth of vibrant arts and crafts traditions and, not least, inhabitants whose resilience, gentleness and hospitality impress every visitor. Much of the country is now completely open to foreign tourists, although some areas (mainly in the east and far north) still require a permit to visit. Exploring Myanmar on a pre-organized tour is a convenient option, saving you the hassle of dealing with the country’s rudimentary and antiquated transport infrastructure. A typical 18-day package tour will take in the main highlights, usually featuring the “Big Four” (Yangon, Mandalay, Inle Lake and Bagan) with perhaps a side trip to Ngapali Beach or a night or two on a luxury cruiser down the majestic Irrawaddy River. Hit the beach with your pup letters@metro.us
It’s harder than you’d think to find a beach in New England where your canine companion is welcome. Some beaches ban pets year-round while others only allow dogs to join you in the offseason. But seeing as February isn’t the perfect time to sprawl out in the sand, we’ve collected some of New England’s best beaches for you and your dog this summer.
North Shore Nahant: This peaceful North Shore enclave is so popular, people simply refer to it as Nahant’s Dog Beach (128 Nahant Road). Instead of feeling like a tiny strip of sand where dogs are permitted, Nahant’s Dog Beach is more like a normal beach that just happens to allow dogs. People come from far and wide to allow their dogs to frolic off leash in the peaceful surf. Saugus: If salt water doesn’t interest you, head to Bark Place at Breakheart Reservation (177 Forest St.) in Saugus, where your pup can take a freshwater dip. Tucked inside this 640-acre hardwood forest, Bark Place is a specifically designated dog area where pets can swim and hang out.
Cape Cod Eastham: On all the Cape Cod National Seashoremanaged beaches, your dog is welcome to frolic in the sand and surf, as long as Fido is on a leash measuring 6 feet or less. Dogs are also prohibited from entering the well-marked lifeguarded areas, so keep your eyes out for any dog-prohibiting signs. Coast Guard Beach (off Route 6) in Eastham is a dune-filled beauty where any dog or human would be pleased to spend the day. South Dennis: As long as dogs stay on their leashes, they’re welcome to join you year-round at Crowes Reservation Beach (100 South St., South Dennis) a popular spot for the locals to bring their pups. With plenty of seagulls to chase and sand to roll around in, it’s canine heaven. If you’re looking for fresh water, Fresh Pond Dog Park (Route 134 South) in Dennis has a swimming area for your dog, as well as fenced-in areas and walking

If you’re looking to head north, Bayview Beach (Route 9, Saco, Maine) is a dog-friendly paradise. Part of the 7-mile stretch around Saco Bay, Bayview welcomes dogs on leashes all yearround. Another favorite is Wells Beach, where spacious sandbars at low tide are perfect for your leashed dog. However, during the peak summer months, your dog’s visit is restricted to after 6 p.m. and before 8 a.m. Before you hit the sand with your furry friend, keep in mind that several of the same hazards for humans at the beach apply to your dog. Pack an umbrella to provide a shady retreat from the sun, as well as a towel to avoid sizzling hot sand. And of course, be sure to pick up after your pup, or you’ll be facing a serious fine.

PITCHING SHOULD BE FOCUS On Tuesday night, Brock Holt scored the eventual gamewinning run in the All-Star Game. It gives home-field advantage to the American League champion in this year’s World Series. That, of course, will not be Holt’s Boston Red Sox. As Major League Baseball resumes its regular season this weekend, the race to the postseason officially begins. For some teams, the dream of playing in October is real. For others, mid-July marks the beginning of some serious soul-searching in order to find answers for 2016. The Red Sox find themselves in the latter group, even though 6.5 games out of first place in the AL East means you’re still mathematically “alive.” In finding that these Sox aren’t going to the postseason this year, the front office should already know why. They can’t pitch. Sitting in last place in the division with a 42-47 record, the Red Sox have the thirdworst team ERA in Major

League Baseball and worst in the American League. You aren’t going to get into the playoffs like that, never mind win a championship. And sure, while Clay Buchholz and Wade Miley were
pitching their behinds off to start July, reality set in last weekend as things fell apart and the first-place Yankees took two of three from the Sox at Fenway. First it was Buchholz leaving Friday’s game in the fourth inning with elbow stiffness. Then it was Miley allowing six runs in 5 and 1/3 on Sunday, in arguably the biggest start of his career. Anyways, when you score six runs in your own ballpark, in the rubber match of a crucial series with the first-place team, which was essentially a must-win, that’s a game you have to win. If you can pitch. These Red Sox have too many questions with their rotation — and I haven’t even mentioned the issues with Justin Masterson, Joe Kelly and Rick Porcello — to leapfrog an entire division. Also, in case you’re wondering, there are nine teams ahead of the Sox in the AL Wild Card race. So they have to now spend the next two and a half months figuring out what their rotation will look like next

with Triple-A Pawtucket. He looks to follow in the footsteps of fellow lefty prospect-turnedpro Eduardo Rodriguez, who was called up to Boston with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts with the PawSox. Then, of course, there’s the trade deadlines, both nonwaiver (July 31) and waiver (Aug. 31). The Red Sox need to seriously consider finding a way to pry a top-prospect pitcher away from a contending club, much like they did last year around this time when they traded Andrew Miller to the Orioles for Rodriguez, who is now one of the most reliable arms — if not the most reliable arm — in Boston. That, or pull the trigger on a blockbuster trade that will land an already dominant starting pitcher by overwhelming a smaller-market club with an offer they can’t refuse, for a player they won’t be able to afford in coming years. Because this current pitching staff just isn’t good enough to make Holt’s impact in the All-Star Game matter.

More moves on way for C’s NBA. A look at which players are most likely (and least likely) to be shipped out. The Celtics used 14 different starting lineups last season. With the way the roster is currently constructed, Brad Stevens could easily double that number during the 2015-16 season. But what you see now most likely isn’t what you’ll get come Game 1 of the season. Already this offseason, the Celtics agreed to trade Gerald Wallace to the Warriors for David Lee. They also acquired Perry Jones from the Thunder for essentially nothing. With a plethora of power forwards and guards, there’s a very good chance more players are on their way out as Danny Ainge tries to build a complete roster. So let’s go through the roster and look at each player’s likeliness of either being traded before or during the season:
Most likely: Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk, Avery Bradley, James Young
With the Celtics signing Amir Johnson and trading for Lee, it’s already clear that guys like Sullinger and Olynyk are going to lose some minutes somewhere, whether at the power forward or center spot. The Celtics may only trade one of the two — but they don’t need both of them. Bradley signed a four-year, $32 million contract last season, and when you look at some of the deals this offseason, that contract looks pretty valuable. Bradley’s one of the better defenders in the game. The Young era could be over before it really starts. After a season of injuries and trips to the D-League, Young has been dinged up again in Summer League. The addition of R.J. Hunter may push him out the door, as Hunter just does more out there on the court.
Less likely
•
The Celtics obviously see Jae Crowder in their future after signing him to a five-year deal. They seem to really like Terry Rozier and R.J. Hunter, so those players will get a shot. Ditto with fellow rookie Jordan Mickey. The rookies don’t cost much, either. Tyler Zeller is their only real center, so he’s got to stay.

TERRY ROZIER
Possible: Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Evan Turner, David Lee
Not to say that the Celtics are necessarily looking to trade these players, but for the right deal they can be had. Drafting Terry Rozier with their first pick in the first round signaled that they’re not completely content at the point guard spot. Ainge didn’t trade for Thomas to flip him — and loves his game — but he has significant value. Smart would also be a big part of a major trade. Turner is in the last year of his deal. Lee can absolutely help a contender, so if Boston is a seller at the deadline, teams may come calling.
