Will Boston 2024 planning force T improvements? Olympics. Boston 2024 CEO wants hosting the 2024 Games to leave a positive legacy on Boston.

“These games could bring tens of thousands of new jobs to the area, 8,000 new housing units in Boston alone, improvements to our green spaces and will be done without taxpayer dollars. … We’ve had a lot of crisis in transportation of late and with this plan, we intend to do 50 years of improvements in 10.”

Three weeks into the 2.0 phase of the Boston 2024 Olympic Bid, CEO Rich Davey credits the skeptics and critics of the plan to bring the games to Boston for the improvements the second round of planning has suggested. Questions about funding, security and how the T could avoid international embarrassment have upped the bar and will continue to hound Boston 2024 until the International Olympic Committee gives the commonwealth the OK to light the torch. “We’re not afraid of the criticism and the feedback; it helps us,” Davey said. “I’ve met with No Boston Olympics on many occasions and I tease them and call them Maybe Boston 2024 because they may be open to the idea of hosting the games but have valid concerns we are working to address.” The bid, in the eyes of supporters, takes a bigger bite out of core issues: budgeting, community engagement, risk mitigation and the potential benefits Boston and other host cities might see. “These games could bring tens of thousands of new jobs to the area, 8,000 new housing units in Boston alone, improvements to our green spaces and will be done without taxpayer dollars,” Davey said. It is no secret that the

country’s fourth-busiest subway system is in dire need of improvements. “As a citizen of Boston, using the T like an average Joe, it’s pretty clear that there are improvements to be made,” said Dr. Cheri Blauwet, a three-time Paralympian and two-time Boston Marathon winner. “Things work well when we have a perspective of deadlines. I think we might get there in a smoother fashion if we have several groups working toward a common goal.” The plan notes a 10 percent drop in T ridership during the summer months with the exodus of college students and people with summer homes. The T is also planning to build new cars for the Red and Orange lines and to revamp the power signals for the Red and Green lines. Davey said the vision includes running enough power to run three-car trains on the infamously loathed Green Line. Operating with a $200 million surplus, Boston 2024 promises that snafus like the

temporary-turned-permanent stadium in London, with its $350 million price tag, won’t happen here. “We are making sure we make decisions today and stick to them,” Davey said. “This is a private enterprise, so we’re on the hook for this. We’ll hire master developers who will be on the hook to make deadlines properly with insurance in case they run into financial issues.” The prospect of leaving a positive legacy once the games left town is something both Davey and Blauwet said is as high a priority as hosting the games themselves. “People who are afraid of the unknown should look into our transparent layout,” Davey said. “There’s nothing like crisis for opportunity. We’ve had a lot of crisis in transportation of late and with this plan, we intend to do 50 years of improvements in 10.” NATE HOMAN and KEELA SWEENEY

Vatican. Mayor in Rome for talks with Pope Francis Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was en route to the Vatican on Sunday, preparing for a high-profile chat with the pope about human trafficking and climate change. Walsh was one of 50 mayors, local administrators and religious leaders set to meet with Pope Francis for workshops on the topics over two days. Walsh plans to re-

turn on Thursday, according to the mayor’s office. In Massachusetts, a diverse group of organizations have been involved in addressing sex trafficking, many of them faith-based. The Massachusetts Coalition to End Human Trafficking lists dozens of partner groups in and out of the state.

Boston in February began participating in a program focusing on combatting sex trafficking by going after men who find ways to pay for sex online. There are 11 mayors, Walsh included, who are taking part in the Cities Empowered Against Sexual Exploitation program. The Hub is also among cities that have adopted

plans to address climate change — the climate plan here is called Greenovate and the city plans updates to it every three years. It’s also one of the top four American cities likely to feel the impact of rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, according to a 2015 Weather Channel study. SPENCER BUELL

residents inexpensive trips to New York City and vice versa, has reportedly shut its pneumatic doors for the last time. Fung Wah was not able to secure a bus stop at South Station, owner Pei Lin Liang said in New York. “If there are no buses, [running] the company cannot operate normally, so [people] won’t invest,” Liang told NBC News in Mandarin.

“If there’s no investment, then the company has no money, and without money we have to close our doors.” This marks the end of a difficult road for the service after the federal Department of Transportation forced it to cease its intercity trips in February, 2013 following failed inspections, concerns about safety and high-profile accidents. Admit it. After this past winter, you said you would never complain about the heat once summer rolled in. Flash forward to mid-July, with the sun high and hot, and a heat wave rolling through, moods are little different in Boston. This week is shaping up to be very hot and mostly clear, with highs in the 80s, and possible 90s, according to the National Weather Service. Mostly sunny weather is forecast for the rest of the week, with the possibility of some more warm-weather thunderstorms mixed in. The city was urging residents to be mindful of their neighbors this week, checking in on the elderly and the homeless — the most vulnerable to the unusually high temps. There are two hotlines for concerned citizens looking to help out their senior neighbors. You can reach the Elderly Commission at 617-635-4366 or the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500. SPENCER BUELL

Five things you need to know

Shooting stirs concerns about radicalization

Addressing his congregation on the Eid al-Fitr holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan, Imam Mohamed Abdul-Azeez implored worshipers to combat Muslim extremism in the aftermath of a shooting rampage that killed five servicemen in Tennessee. The suspect, a young Muslim who grew up in the Chattanooga area, also died in the gunfight on Thursday, the last day of Islam’s holy month of fasting. It was the latest reminder to American Muslims of the need to find ways to keep teenagers and young adults from being drawn to ideologies promoted by such groups as Islamic State (ISIS), the militants who control part of Syria. “When they talk about Syria, when they talk about

Tennessee … what will they say about the American Muslim community?” Azeez asked the 2,000 congregants at the rented hall in Sacramento, California, on Friday. Hours before the attack, the suspect, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, had texted his close friend a link to a long Islamic verse that included the line: “Whosoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, then I have declared war against him.” REUTERS

Five bodies found inside northern California house: Police

Former President George H.W. Bush released from hospital

Five bodies, including those of three children, were found inside a home in Modesto, California and police said they had identified a person of interest in connection with the deaths. Modesto police did not provide any details on the victims, how they died, whether they were related or what their ages were. Police spokeswoman Heather Graves confirmed the dead included three children and two adults. Detectives had identified a Modesto resident as a person of interest and made public his name, age and vehicle description and license plate number.

Former President George H.W. Bush was released from a hospital in Maine on Sunday after being treated for a broken bone in his neck, spokesman Jim McGrath said according to USA Today. Bush, 91, the oldest living former American president, was hospitalized on Wednesday after a fall at his summer home in Kennebunkport.

Greek banks ready to open

Greek banks are ready to open their branches across the country on Monday after a three-week shutdown, officials said, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for aid talks so Athens could lift withdrawal limits. The bank reopenings, and an increase in value added tax on restaurant food and public transport from Monday, are aimed at restoring trust inside and outside Greece after an aid-for-reforms deal averted bankruptcy. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is trying to turn a corner after he reluctantly agreed to negotiate a third bailout, allowing the European Central Bank to top up bank credit lines but prompting a rebellion in his Syriza party. Lockheed to buy Sikorsky for over $8 billion

Lockheed Martin Corp., the largest U.S. weapons maker, has agreed to buy United Technologies Corp’s Sikorsky Aircraft unit, the maker of Black Hawk helicopters, for over $8 billion, a source familiar with the negotiations said on Sunday. The two companies plan to announce the deal on Monday before both report second-quarter results on Tuesday, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly. It will be Lockheed’s largest acquisition since it bought Martin Marietta Corp for about $10 billion two decades ago. REUTERS

Obama sends Iran deal to wary Congress, Israel urges rejection Nuke agreement. Obama has promised to exercise his veto if Congress rejects the deal. President Barack Obama’s administration sent a nuclear agreement with Tehran to Congress on Sunday and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged U.S. lawmakers to reject a deal he said would only feed an “Iranian terror machine”. In a first concrete sign of European determination to quickly rebuild economic and political ties with Iran after a 12-year standoff, German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel arrived in Tehran with an economic delegation. Other European powers were

expected to follow. Overriding it would require a two-thirds majority of both the House of Representatives and Senate, so the administration is working to win over enough of Obama’s fellow Democrats to offset strong Republican opposition. In an unusual move, Obama took three Democratic congressman golfing with him: Joe Courtney of Connecticut, Ed Perlmutter of Colorado and John Yarmuth of Kentucky. The president more often taps aides and friends for weekend golfing. “I think the right thing to do is merely not to go ahead with this deal,” Netanyahu said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” as he continued a string of U.S. media interviews denouncing the deal reached on Tuesday between Iran and six major powers.

Quoted

“Friends can disagree but we have decades of rock-solid cooperation with Israel.” Ash Carter “There are many things to be done to stop Iran’s aggression and this deal is not one of them,” he said. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, arriving in Israel on the first visit by a U.S. cabinet official since the agreement, told reporters on his aircraft: “I’m not going to change anybody’s mind in Israel. That’s not the purpose of my trip. Carter is also touring Jordan and Saudi Arabia, which both eye the prospect of increasing Iranian influence in the region with some suspicion. REUTERS

Iran and Israel Tehran denies Western and Israeli accusations it has been using a research program as cover for ambitions to develop atomic weapons. President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday he expected the deal would lead to closer relations

with Tehran’s neighbors in the Gulf region, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran remained at odds with the West. It was on Khamenei’s words that Netanyahu seized, speaking to his cabinet on Sunday. “The Iranians are not even

trying to hide the fact they will take advantage of the hundreds of billions they will receive via the agreement to arm their terror machine,” he said. “And they say explicitly they will continue their struggle against the United States and its allies, Israel of course above all.” REUTERS

Rumer Willis is going to ‘Chicago’

Did you know Rumer Willis could sing? Unless you’re living in L.A. and frequenting The Sayers Club, probably not, but Willis is about to make a massive stage upgrade to Broadway, taking over the role of singing jailbird Roxie Hart in

“Chicago” for eight weeks beginning Aug. 18. Willis is also working on an album with Linda Perry, who’s written and produced songs for Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani. “Chicago” has attracted many celebrity names over its 18-year run, most recently Brandy Norwood, also in the role of Roxie Hart until Aug 2. Melanie Griffith, Sofia Vergara and Taye Diggs have all done stints in the show. EVA KIS

Maybe next time they won’t turn up their noses at my dogsitting offer.

Australia serious about that Johnny Depp dog stuff Oh wow, so that Australian agriculture minister wasn’t just making empty threats about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard smuggling their Yorkies into the country back in May. Heard was officially charged late last week with two counts of illegally importing pets and one count of producing a false document, violating Australia’s strict quarantine regulations. Heard’s charges carry a maximum sentence of 10

years in prison and a $102,000 fine if convicted, though I don’t see that happening. Of course, I thought this was all ridiculous blustering on the minister’s part to begin with, so what do I know? Heard, it comes as little surprise, has previously said that she doesn’t imagine her or Depp visiting the land Down Under again anytime soon, and if she didn’t mean it before, then this certainly cements it.

Q&A. “Ant-Man” co-star T.I. balances music, acting and raising six kids. How many films does a guy have to do before people stop thinking of him as “just a rapper”? Atlanta native T.I., who got his start in music, has been doing just fine in front of the camera since making his screen debut 10 years ago in “ATL.” But sometimes some people still need to be reminded of that. Maybe with his latest, Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” he won’t have to anymore.

Were you much of a comics fan in general before this project? I had a fling. I collected a lot of “X-Men” and “Wolverine” comics in the early ’90s. I lost them. I lost the whole collection — like 35 books — and I was deflated. I just couldn’t start over again. I just couldn’t. Before you got involved, how much had you heard about “Ant-Man”? Not much. He isn’t the best known of the Marvel team, but that’s great because now we

can introduce him to the world — and get credit for it. What was the first thing you thought when they explained him to you? This script better be good. The movie is actually very funny, even for Marvel. Sure. I mean, it’s hard not to be with Paul. I don’t think it was even written in the script to be as funny as it is. I think that the onscreen chemistry and the environment that was set contributed to the amount of laughs that it gets. It’s been a decade since “ATL,” and you do plenty of acting. But do you still find yourself having to remind people that you’re not just a rapper? I mean, I don’t remind people of anything — unless their decision will gain or lose an opportunity for me. Like, the worst thing is for people to actually be the determiner of whether or not you get an opportunity and have that mentality — “Oh, he’s just a rapper.” No, I commit myself to just about anything that I do and give 1,000 percent. I don’t just fly by the seat of my pants

doing stuff halfheartedly. And I think just reminding people that I’m a very passionate artist and performer in any genre, in any area — I mean, it’s a pain in the ass, but from time to time, you kind of have to. That’s a good problem to have, having two careers going at the same time. Yeah, not bad. Well, you know, I’m trying to get them both to the pinnacle. I’m very passionate about my music and equally passionate about my acting career. What’s your game plan for that? In music, I have another album that I’m releasing and just making the best possible music that satisfies the fans — and picking the most appropriate roles that will surprise people in a way that they never thought that they would see me perform. I think that if you balance those things in both fields, eventually the inevitable outcome is success. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

One more thing

So do you get any time to relax? No, no. Heavens no. I have an album that I’m releasing, this film, still working on a script for “ATL 2,” trying to balance all of these things. These six children I got, they won’t necessarily let me rest. If they would just stop growing and eating so much. [Laughs]

Fresh ink. Grandma would totally approve of this tattoo trend. Maybe it’s because of Etsy. Maybe it’s because of those NSFW needlepoint pillows taking over Pinterest. Whatever the reason, cross-stitch tattoos are having a moment. Nicole May, 38, a tattoo artist at Tiki Town Tattoo in Alberta, Canada, says she definitely has seen cross-

stitch tattoos becoming increasingly popular. “I see a lot of subversive cross-stitch on Etsy, and I feel like it is something a lot of young people are picking up as a hobby,” says May. “Crossstitch tattoos have become popular along with the general trend of cross-stitch.” Here, four people share with us the stories behind their cross-stitch tattoos. When people see my tattoo, I typically get reactions from older generations because it evokes a nostalgic feeling. They always have to stop and tell me that either they or a loved one used to cross-stitch. I love hearing their stories. To me, it’s a way to keep traditional art alive.”

Age: 28 Occupation: Homemaker/ cross-stitcher for hire Location: Alberta, Canada “I have a small business where I custom cross-stitch family portraits. On all the portraits, I include a red heart that floats over the family. It’s my signature. People find my tattoo very unique. The most reoccurring compliment I get is how much it suits me.”

Crystal Balser

Age: 35 Occupation: Owner of MOD Tattoo Location: Ontario, Canada “A fellow tattoo artist and I wanted to figure out how to do a cross-stitch tattoo. We are both very crafty with crocheting and crossstitching, so it just made sense. It’s challenging, and we wanted to experiment, so I let her try it out on me!”

jobs education The future workforce will demand more flexibility, ingenuity and imagination than a four-year liberal arts education can offer. RACHEL KASHDAN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

The past two decades of innovation have changed America’s economic landscape in vast ways. From the gig economy to the sharing economy, it seems like every day, our businesses and lives are reshaped by modernization. “We’re going through a digital revolution that’s as large-scale as the Industrial Revolution we experienced more than 100 years ago,” says Philip Zelikow, visit-

No collar “We don’t really know how to classify people who are software developers,” says Zelikow. “There are more lines of code in a Chevy Volt than there are in a 737, [but] people don’t think of the automotive industry as a center for software developers. This is what we mean about a ‘no-collar world.’”

ing managing director of the Markle Foundation and co-author of “America’s Moment: Creating Opportunity in the Connected Age.” “The old system — whitecollar job in the office, blue-collar in the factory — is limiting,” he continues. “The new system is all about customizing the box that fits you.” We asked Zelikow how exactly students can go about doing that.

Forget the standard bachelor’s degree According to Zelikow, we need to reinvent educational institutions and adjust job credentials to create more opportunities. Some institutions are beginning to do this, like College for America at Southern New Hampshire University, which offers “more flexible educational programs and more flexible credentials.” Take its associate degree for nonclinical health care. The program targets working adults with a “competencybased approach” that awards students a degree at their own pace after demonstrating mastery of goals tied directly to career demands.

Remember that college doesn’t make or break your path to success

Why you won’t need a bachelor’s degree HOW TO GET AHEAD Zelikow says that young people should know that they don’t have to go to college to get a job. “Take, for instance, entrylevel [information technology] jobs — there’s a whole well-paid career path in the IT world,” he says. “The entrylevel job might be, say, working at a help desk. You don’t have to get a B.A. degree to learn to work at an IT help desk. Then if you’ve done that for a while, you might take some more stuff and become a systems administrator. So, why not offer people options like that?”

Those who forgo a degree early on should still have the opportunity to get a college education later in their lives to gain skills they may need. “We have this notion that the only time you can get a good liberal arts education is between the ages of 18 and 22. That’s wrong,” Zelikow explains. “The ‘sorry you missed the highway entrance, so now you can never get on’ is a terrible attitude to take. We ought to make college available for anyone at any time.”

But it should never be too late to go back to school

Take initiative Above all, Zelikow says he

doesn’t want people to feel like they cannot get the training that they need to live successful lives. He says Americans need to call for change from government officials and workplace heads. “Demand that political, business and education leaders really grab the digital age with both hands and start talking about it.”

Babson beats MIT and Harvard in Money’s annual college ranking Money magazine has named Babson the No. 2 college in the U.S. The list ranks some 1,500 schools based on educational quality, affordability and alumni earnings. The Boston college — which specializes in business and entrepreneurship — is unique in that it only offers one degree: a B.S. in business. Students get hands-on experience, launching a business during their freshmen year (all profits of which go to a charity) and interning with local companies throughout their four years. Such focus pays off, literally: Alumni earn an average yearly salary of $60,100 within five years of graduation, or “about $9,300 more than the average for recent grads of comparable schools,” reports Money. Stanford snagged the No. 1 spot, with MIT, Princeton and CalTech rounding out the top five. (Harvard ranked No. 6.) Raquel Laneri

How to ace a Skype interview Land that job from the comfort of your own bedroom. TAYLOR ROBINSON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

If you haven’t had a Skype interview yet, chances are you will soon. More and more companies have been using Skype or Google Hangouts to conduct their first-round interviews. Employees are increasingly working remotely — a recent London study guesses that nearly half the workforce will be logging hours at home by 2020 — and interviewing candidates by webcam saves time and travel expenses.

But while most of us have been trained to interview in person, a remote meeting brings its own unique challenges and nuances. Which is why we’ve turned to Cara Press. As a career counselor at Bottom Line, a nonprofit that mentors lowincome and first-generation college students (such as this writer), Press knows a thing or two about dazzling would-be employers via camera, as she’s found herself preparing more and more students for remote interviews. So, what’s the secret? Press gives us her top four tips.

Prepare your environment Interviewing over the computer calls for some prepara-

Smile! We all get nervous during interviews — but smiling can help you loosen up and help you land the job. “Most people want to work with other individuals who are friendly,” Press says. “Remember to smile, whether it’s on the phone, over Skype or in person. That’s a big one that people tend to forget.”

tion that we just don’t deal with during in-person interviews — such as cleaning the room you’ll be in or adjusting the lighting. “When I’m interviewing you, I shouldn’t see your unmade bed or

Where you sit is just as important as what you wear during a Skype interview. ISTOCK

dirty laundry in the background,” says Press. “You still want to present your most polished self.” Also, be aware of noise. “Try to find a quiet place or let your roommates know that you can’t be interrupted during that time,” Press advises.

Test the technology Webcam-based interviews require practice just as

in-person interviews do — particularly to test-drive the technology. “Practice ahead of time over Skype with a friend to make sure the connection is good,” Press says. And because you could always run into a technical glitch or two, have a backup. “Make a plan with the interviewer within the first few minutes about who will call whom in case you get disconnected,” she suggests.

Treat it like an in-person interview A Skype interview isn’t really that different from an in-person one. You still need to do your research on the company, dress professionally, be on time and ask smart questions. Eye contact can be tricky, however. Says Press: “Avoid looking at yourself on the big screen and instead look at the lens of the camera so that you appear engaged.”

SHARKS GO WILD AND ESPN GOES POLITICALLY CORRECT Nature and sports don’t always mix. Yeah, it’s cool to watch football in a blizzard. The NHL’s Winter Classic was awesome for a few years before the novelty wore off. And part of the reason the World Series is still a magical event is because of that chilly October air. But this past weekend, we saw two events ruined because of uncontrollable elements. The British Open was postponed a day because of ridiculous winds at St. Andrews and the World Surf League’s J-Bay Open in South Africa was postponed because famed surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark during the event’s live broadcast. Fanning survived the attack — his board and leg were the only things with teeth marks on them — but the video of the encounter is more frightening than anything you recently saw on Shark Week. The announcers immediately pick up on it and then horns — scary, nuclear attack-style horns! — begin to sound. Guys like Fanning aren’t deterred by incidents like this (hell, he posted an Instagram just the other day of him waking up next to African lions), but getting eaten during competition is no way to close a career.

jocks, adore canned quotes (“We played within ourselves tonight”), ALWAYS steer clear of controversy and have littleto-no opinion on anything that doesn’t involve a ball and a stick. In the 2015 calendar year, ESPN will have said goodbye to Bill Simmons, Keith Olbermann and Colin Cowherd. All of them have their detractors, but that comes with the territory when you discuss off-the-script topics. Earlier this month, Cowherd was talking about how horrible a guest

Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh was 10 minutes after Harbaugh appeared on the show. Cowherd recognized how big of a disaster his interview with the coach was and openly talked about it on air. ESPN doesn’t like that. It doesn’t like transparency. And controversy? There were surely no Bob Costaslike takes allowed on ESPN airwaves last when it came to Caitlyn Jenner accepting the Courage Award at the ESPYs. Even if you think Costas is wrong (he believed Jenner was given the award as part of a “crass exploitation play” by ESPN), he’s at least entitled to his opinion on the matter.

The final round of The Open at the Old Course in Scotland will take place today. Jordan Spieth, who won this year’s Masters and US Open tournaments will look for his third straight major victory as he’s 11-under overall and trails only Paul Dunne, Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen by a stroke. Spieth will tee off at 9:20 a.m. Eastern today.

No Deflategate ruling yet reached as Pats training camp looms Is this week THE week? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is taking his sweet time in determining Tom Brady’s fate after the quarterback and approximately 40 other people met at NFL headquarters in New York 27 days ago. There were rumblings that Goodell would rule on Brady’s appeal of his four-game suspension last week, but nothing

came of those rumors. The Patriots are starting to become frustrated with how long the process is taking as their training camp begins in 10 days. “I think [Brady] should just get the four games wiped out baby! Roger, just wipe out those four games and make this easy,” Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski told CBS last week. “Put this in the past; it’s pretty annoying that you keep holding it up.” Patriots receiver Julian Edelman told reporters this past weekend that the entire Deflategate saga has Brady ready to take on the world.

We’re still waiting on Roger Goodell, right. / GETTY IMAGES

“He’s fired up,” Edelman said of his quarterback. “You don’t want a mad Tom Brady, and he’s a little ticked off.” ABC News reported last week that the NFLPA will challenge the NFL in court if Brady’s suspension is not entirely wiped out. It took 107 days fom the time the Patriots were first accused of deflating footballs in the AFC Championship game win over Indianapolis to the time the Wells Report was released. It took 48 days from the time the Wells Report was released to when Brady had his appeal hearing. MATT BURKE

Sox pitching prospect Johnson will get his chance this week MLB. The lefty is expected to bring a steady presence to the rotation. For Red Sox pitching prospect Brian Johnson, his long-awaited major league debut will come Tuesday in Houston. But, with the success of Eduardo Rodriguez, many are expecting the same type of production out of Johnson, which to Johnson just isn’t fair. This isn’t to say Johnson won’t succeed in the majors, it’s just pointing out the two aren’t the same type of pitcher. Rodriguez has fairly electric stuff and can dominate hitters when he’s at his best. Johnson, on the other hand, isn’t as flashy. The left-handed Johnson isn’t going to overpower anyone, as his fastball is in the low 90s. He’s more of a pitchto-contact pitcher and does not walk many batters. The main point is that Johnson won’t create the same type of buzz Rodriguez did. Johnson hasn’t pitched in a

The slate A look at what’s on tap for the Red Sox this week: •

The Sox will wrap up a four-game series in Anaheim against the Angels tonight (10 p.m., NESN) as Steven Wright (3-2, 4.15 ERA) is slated to get the ball for Boston and Andrew Heaney (3-0, 1.32 ERA) is set to start for the Angels.

•

The Sox will begin a threegame set at Houston Tuesday with Brian Johnson scheduled to start. Wade Miley and Rick Porcello are slotted for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The Sox return to Fenway Friday to start a series with Detroit.

game since July 6, but the 24year old is 8-6 with a 2.73 ERA in 16 starts this season. In 13 of those 16 starts he’s allowed two earned runs or less, which just continues his impressive run from last season where between High-A Salem and

Double-A Portland he allowed two earned runs or less in 22 of his 25 starts. While the 2012 first-round pick won’t blow anyone away with his stuff, clearly the numbers speak for themselves. “The one thing he showed in spring training was a willingness to attack the strike zone with three pitches, manager John Farrell said last weekend after his call up. “He’s got a couple of breaking balls that he can get some swing and miss to. But I think it’s his overall competitiveness, in addition to the repertoire, that brings him here equipped.’’ With Johnson being called up now, it seems like he will be in the Red Sox’ rotation to stay, especially if the team continues to fall further and further back in the AL East. Player development will become the primary focus soon, if things don’t change dramatically. The one thing to monitor with Johnson is his innings. He went from 118 in 2013 to 143 2/3 last season. He’s currently at 85 2/3 innings this season, so it would seem likely the organization wouldn’t want to go more than 150-160. In or-

Today, Dr. Wu is the Director of Vision Correction Surgery at the New England Eye Center, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, located in Boston, Massachusetts. She has been performing LASIK, PRK, ICL’s and now advanced lens all-laser cataract surgery at New England Eye Center since 1992.

From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

20 boston Monday, July 20, 2015

At New England Eye Center, we truly are taking sight to the next level. Thanks to recent advances in laser and lens implant technology, our highly-trained specialists are helping patients of all ages enjoy the type of clearer, more natural vision they desire. Vision for the way we live here in New England!
