Chewing tobacco may be banned at Hub ballparks Dip. Mayor Marty Walsh hopes to ban “smokeless tobacco” to protect kids. Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and Mayor Marty Walsh teamed up with public health officials and advocates, hoping to strike out smokeless tobacco in Fenway Park and other sports venues. Walsh planned to pitch an ordinance with the City Council on Monday, hoping to improve the quality of our national pastime and toss out the link between a lip full of spit tobacco and the old ball game. “Our baseball parks are places for creating healthy futures, and this ordinance is about doing the right thing as a community for our young people,” Walsh said in a press release. “The consequences of smokeless tobacco are real, and we must do all that we can to set an example.” Walsh and Schilling spoke

to media Wednesday at Moakley Field in South Boston about the proposed ordinance, which takes aim at banning chewing tobacco in professional, collegiate, high school or organized amateur sporting events, including baseball, softball, football, basketball, hockey, track and field, lacrosse, field hockey and soccer and any other event involving a game or other athletic competition organized by a league or association. Under Walsh’s rules, violators could face a $250 fine. For years, it seems baseball and tobacco have gone hand-inhand. Fans of the game know it’s not uncommon to see players spitting out brown stuff on the field or stepping up to the plate with a big wad in their cheeks. When it comes to the Sox, an informal survey in 2013 by The Boston Globe found 21 of 58 players used smokeless tobacco products, mostly “snuff” tucked in next to their gums. Many of them told the Globe there was something about baseball that made them want

to chew, and said they didn’t even dip in the off-season. Schilling, the bloody-socksporting hero of the 2004 World Series and longtime chewing tobacco user, announced in 2014 he had been diagnosed with mouth cancer, a malady he believes his habit caused. “I have seen cancer take the

lives of people very important to me like my father, a lifelong smoker, and I have endured the insufferable agony of radiation to the head/neck,” Schilling said in a statement. “If this law stops just one child from starting, it’s worth the price.” Chewing tobacco and snuff contain 28 cancer-caus-

ing agents, according to the National Cancer Institute, and the U.S. National Toxicology Program has established smokeless tobacco as a “known human carcinogen.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner Bill Evans questioned the value of making Boston cops wear body cameras, but for very different reasons. The two responded Wednesday to to a proposal by City Councilor Charles Yancey to require BPD cops to don body cameras. Evans said the proliferation of cell phone cameras makes police body cameras unnecessary.

“Honestly, there are plenty of cameras out there now,” Evans said on Boston Herald Radio. “Everyone has a cell phone.” But, he added, “we see instances where video evidence is crucial. The incident in Chelsea [where a Chelsea cop was charged with punching a

handcuffed man and then falsifying a report] comes to mind.” Walsh said he’s open to the idea of body cameras, but doubts their effectiveness. “Body cameras are not going to prevent shootings from happening,” Walsh said, nor will they

improve police-community relations. “That whole issue of the gadget fixing the relationship with communities is overblown,” Evans said. “I don’t think we should be paying for the sins across the country.” Evans said that improving face-to-face relationships with members of the community, especially young children, is far more important than cameras in order to earn the community’s trust. Flight. MH370 went missing in March of last year while en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia confirmed early on Thursday that a piece of a wing washed up on an Indian Ocean island beach last week was from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the first trace of the plane found since it vanished last year with 239 people on board. “Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts has conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370, Prime Minister Najib Razak said in an early morning televised address. “I would like to assure all those affected by this tragedy that the government of Malaysia is committed to do everything within our means to find out the truth of what happened, Najib said.

The announcement, by providing the first direct evidence that the plane crashed in the ocean, closes a chapter in one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history but gives victims’ families little clue as to why it disappeared. “It’s not the end, said Jacquita Gonzales, who lost her husband Patrick Gomes, a flight attendant. “Although they found something, you know, it’s not the end. They still need to find the whole plane and our spouses as well. We still want them back, she said. The airline described the discovery as “a major breakthrough for us in resolving the disappearance of MH370. REUTERS

Going dark Charlize Theron confronts demons in Gillian Flynn’s “Dark Places.”

Recipe for success Now that she’s starred in an adaptation of a Gillian Flynn novel, Charlize Theron has a foolproof plan for the rest of her acting career. “We’ve talked about it,” Theron says of Flynn’s future writing efforts. “All of her characters are going to be 5-foot-10 from now on. And flat-chested.”

NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Despite being one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, Charlize Theron is painfully aware of how rare it is in popular film to come across a fully realized female protagonist who has some edge to her — even with an Oscar under her belt. “It’s interesting when you get to play a women that is layered and conflicted and

has certain human attributes that might not be that attractive,” she says. “Somehow, because we haven’t seen enough of it in cinema, it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb, and people comment on it.” While she’s not a fan of the state of female characters in movies, she understands why people are focused on them. “People are talking about it because there has been such a lack of it,” she says. “I can’t say that I’m attracted to angry, dark people. I think what I’m attracted to are characters that to me feel very truthful to the embodiment of a full woman. It’s just refreshing to see women like Gillian [Flynn] write women like that. It feels authentic.” Some folks keeping an eye on Theron’s career have suggested she might be drawn to these darker roles because of her own rocky history — Theron’s mother shot and killed her abusive husband in self-defense in 1991. But the Oscar-winning actress insists those people are discerning connections where there aren’t any. “It’s a very easy assumption to make that because I had a very tragic event happen in my life, that that was why I wanted to make this

story, and it couldn’t be further from the truth,” she says. “There really aren’t any similarities. The circumstances of this tragedy has absolutely nothing in common with the tragedy that happened in my life.” One connection, however, is family drama. “The correlation in this that people can relate to is that we all come from this family structure that we don’t get to choose necessarily,” she says, “and I have yet to meet somebody that doesn’t have some form of skeletons in their closet from the family life that they lived.”

Jon Stewart’s greatest ‘Daily Show’ achievements You can thank the beloved Comedy Central host for taking down “Crossfire” and more. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

It’s safe to say that Jon Stewart leaves “The Daily Show” with the kind of legacy generally reserved for a Nobel Prize winner. For more than a decade, he asked the important questions about what was happening in the country and skewered only the most deserving subjects. And despite his self-deprecating jokes about how he was watched only by stoned college students, Stewart’s show often proved to be more than just satire: Real change came about because of it. Here, in no particular order, are some of the host’s biggest wins.

The forgotten correspondent Many great talents started out on “The Daily Show.” Others passed through so quickly their tenure may be forgotten. From 2010 through 2011, Olivia Munn, then known for “Attack of the Show!” and bro magazine spreads, was a regular reporter. It was a controversial move, but the performer proved game and able as the Senior Asian Correspondent, fitting right in and overturning assumptions that she was just a hot sorta nerd. Then again, her tenure was but brief. GETTY IMAGES

Jon Stewart, you will be missed. COMEDY CENTRAL

1

“Crossfire” gets canceled

Stewart’s distaste for pundit shows of all stripes came up repeatedly over the years, but it was his appearance on “Crossfire” that had the biggest impact. After appearing on the CNN debate program and pointing out that its hosts were hacks and that the show was “hurting America,” “Crossfire” was quickly and unceremoniously canceled a few months later. Though it ended up being revived in 2013, it has since gone under again, as part of what we can only assume is a hex Stewart put on it.

2

First responders get their health care

Back in 2010, a bill providing health care for 9/11 first

responders was in danger of being dropped after Republicans filibustered it. Stewart invited four men who had been first on the scene on September 11 — all of whom were suffering from health ailments related to their actions on that day — and asked them what they thought of what was happening. Not surprisingly, the legislation passed soon after that.

3

Teaching us to question media

We all knew there were a lot of pundit shows on before “The Daily Show,” but they would have gotten away with a great deal more shenanigans if not for Stewart repeatedly putting them under the microscope. Sure, he didn’t get every talkinghead program canceled, but

he made a vast audience a lot more skeptical of the way their news was being presented.

4

Making young people aware of current events

Stewart regularly defended his program as a comedic show rather than a news program, but there’s no doubt that young people ended up a lot more informed about the news. “The Daily Show” was the best, hippest way to find out what was going on for those who weren’t exactly tuning in to Brian Williams, no matter how many awesome stories about helicopter crashes Williams invented. Whether he intended it or not, Stewart managed to be the Walter Cronkite of our generation.

‘Ricki and the Flash’ Director: Jonathan Demme Stars: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline Rating: PG-13

••••• In “Ricki and the Flash,” Meryl Streep plays the kind of person society likes to forget: the woman who walked away from her children at a young age to pursue a foolish dream, one that didn’t have the nerve to come true. When we first see Ricki, real name Linda, she’s playing with her band in a bar that’s maybe a quarter filled. As far as purgatories go, it’s not bad: The paltry patrons are into it as they play covers — mostly dad rock with the occasional sop to the youngs. Pierced, tattooed and bejeweled, one side of her head tied up in endless braids, she daylights at a pricey supermarket and is about to declare Chapter 11, but she’s coasting in a way that to her is mostly harmless. When pressed, she regrets nothing. “Ricki and the Flash” is the story of how she nervously struggles to reconnect with her moneyed ex (Kevin Kline) and their three kids, who are still upset with the mom who abandoned them. There are insurmountable tensions afoot, and it’s hard to take a side between our protagonist — giggly, stubborn,

gregarious — and the estranged family who has every right to look at her cross-eyed. The thing is, “Ricki and the Flash” doesn’t want you to take sides. It’s in essence a hangout movie, burning with a goofy humanism that comes from Diablo Cody’s script but even more so from Jonathan Demme, its director. It’s an odd fit: the snarky author

of “Juno” and the enjoyably sour “Young Adult” paired with the warm soul of “Something Wild.” But Cody’s script is surprisingly delicate and open to the complexities of difficult relationships. Streep, a sometimes overly technical actress, can be a bit much in the early stretch, but she chills out around the time Ricki does the same. She knows she can’t fully win back the kids she abandoned so

she’ll settle for something considerably less. The film around her becomes about moments of transcendence, of losing one’s self in music, even if it’s just Springsteen or Pink covers, or interaction, even if it’s with people who will never be sure if they can trust her. “Ricki and the Flash” can be spotty, but there are many, many times when it seems great. The three British lads who together comprise Life of Dillon never sought out fame. While David Keiffer, Joe Griffith and Rob Griffith are relishing their time in the spotlight now, with teen girls screaming their names and begging for selfies, the guys initially didn’t want to be pop stars. They wanted to be songwriters. “We really wanted to write for other artists, but we couldn’t make that a reality,” Joe Griffith says. “We had to realize things didn’t work out as we hoped.” They talked about disbanding, but then decided to try singing the songs themselves. And that decision changed everything.

It was absolutely amazing.” For David Keiffer and Joe, the most surreal moment was being flown from the U.K. to New York City shortly after Thanksgiving to meet the whole Sony team. “One day we were in our flat in London and the next we were in this high-rise building talking with legends,

Best of both worlds In addition to being signed to Sony, Life of Dillon is also managed by Adam Alpert, who manages The Chainsmokers. Get an offseason ‘Weekend Update’ Colin Jost of “SNL” heads to Laugh Boston. Don’t expect puppets. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Colin Jost may be the head writer and “Weekend Update” host at “Saturday Night Live,” but that doesn’t mean he rests on his laurels all summer long. He’s using his hiatus to spread some standup dates around, and he heads to Laugh Boston this weekend for a few shows. It’s something of a return home for him, since he attended Harvard and worked on the Lampoon prior to his “SNL” days. We chatted with him about what you can and can’t expect out of a Colin Jost standup date and how his Lampoon days shaped him.

“Weekend Update” has such a strong current events focus. What kinds of stuff do you like to talk about in your standup? Kind of a mix of everything. No puppets.

Did you ever try to do prop comedy when you were coming up? I did do one show where I found a puppet with red hair and a red mustache and a blue suit that my brother had left somewhere, and I had the puppet answer questions from the audience. I don’t know if I want to go back to that.

Do you find that doing standup allows you to be a little looser than your day job at “SNL”?

Physically, it allows you to be looser. You can move and people see that I have legs — exciting! Obviously, the reason people love doing standup is that it’s the most you’re in control, kind of in anything in entertainment. It’s just you. You do what you want.

Do you find it to be a relief to not have to be so all over the news in your off time? I take a little bit of a break, but I can’t ever not be aware of what’s going on. I inevitably end up reading newspapers and looking on the Internet and keeping up on things because that’s in my nature. But it’s definitely a relief to not have the pressure — to take a slight break from the pressure of figuring out a take on the news, even just for a month and then get back into it.

Is there anything that’s happened that you were sad you couldn’t cover on the show? Yeah, I mean, certainly Donald Trump, although I’m guessing he’ll still be around. The woman from the NAACP, pretty fantastic. Let’s see, El Chapo, great. What a great, nice mystery, the escaped convicts in upstate New York. All fun, breezy stories.

There have been a lot of prison breaks this summer. I guess even they deserve a summer vacation, you know?

There’s such a long tradition of people going from the Lampoon to “SNL’.’ Do you think there’s a shared sense of humor there, or it’s just a great incubator of talent? I think it’s rare in colleges that people are just writing all the time. The culture at the Lampoon is intense. I was probably there 80 or 90 hours a week and even though I certainly wasn’t working during all of that time, I was around people who were serious about comedy. Usually you don’t find that until after college, if you go to Second City or Groundlings or the UCB theater in New York.

Does that help with the discipline you need to have while writing at “SNL”? “SNL” feels the most similar to the Lampoon. My approach to both was to write as much as I possibly could, because I thought I’d develop mentally. The more I wrote, the better I would get. So I wrote a lot of junk. But if you had one thing that worked, you could learn from that and try to refine your process. But early on, the more you write, the better. You can’t ever really go wrong by trying something and experimenting.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, GOODELL MUST GO

SPORTS

Visit Metro.us for more on the controversies surrounding the LFL. Roger Goodell has been NFL commissioner since 2006. / GETTY IMAGES

Roger Goodell has to go. He can no longer be commissioner of the National Football League. This isn’t the first time you’ve heard such an opinion. And it’s not the first time I’ve shared this thought. But now, more than ever, it needs to be imminent. The main reason why? Right now the entire world is reading through Tom Brady’s personal emails. These include actual football conversations with his offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels; interactions with friends; dinner reservations; and even disputes over the color of his pool cover. Sure, some of these emails are entertaining. Most of them aren’t Deflategate-related. And they don’t do anything to damage his reputation. But it’s the mere principle. What started out as questions about the air pressure in AFC Championship footballs has turned into Brady’s personal emails being spread across the Internet like wildfire. Whether it was “judge ordered” or “NFLPA requested,” we should never have even reached the point where releasing Brady’s personal emails to the public was an option. For that, Goodell has to go. For allowing Deflategate to get this far and to reach a level of absurdity that never would have been imagined by anyone, he has to go. Goodell wants to protect the shield. He wants to pound his chest with honesty and integrity and stand up for principles that serve his league best. OK then. Let’s be honest. How does anyone in the NFL

benefit from Brady’s privacy being destroyed? This isn’t some practice-squad offensive tackle we’re talking about here. This is Tom-bleepingBrady. The reigning, defending, three-time Super Bowl MVP, four-time Super Bowl champion. And you’re going to do him like this, just because you think he was “at least generally aware” of some balls that may or may not have been deflated? Again, we’re talking about the air pressure

in a football. At least, we were six months ago. Now, in August, we’re all kicking our feet up and enjoying Brady’s private conversations on our mobile devices. And where will it end? If it can happen to Brady, it can happen to anyone. So it’s time for the rest of the league to step up. And it’s time for former players to put away the uniforms they used to wear and acknowledge that this has gone too far. I’m sure Jim Kelly and Troy Aikman wouldn’t want us reading their emails. And I’m positive that Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and Colts owner Jim Irsay wouldn’t want us seeing their private dinner reservations. Not even if it meant protecting the integrity of the league. This goes beyond Deflategate. We’re talking invasion of privacy here. So forget about PSI levels in a football for a moment. If you have a voice, then have some balls. You want integrity? You want to protect the shield? Then get rid of Goodell.

TOM BRADY GETTY IMAGES

NFL. Brady takes a jab at Peyton in personal email

Peyton Manning / GETTY IMAGES

The Patriots and Tom Brady are known for being extremely tight-lipped and Brady, in particular, never bites at the opportunity to publicly blast an opponent. But fans got some insight into Brady’s mindset Wednesday when items from Brady’s Deflategate appeal — including some personal emails – were made public. Brady responded to an email last fall from his friend, Kevin Brady, and took

a jab at rival quarterback Peyton Manning. Kevin Brady brought up a Grantland.com piece that compared the two quarterbacks. The Patriots’ QB responded with a shot at Manning’s longevity. “Thanks Popa,” Brady wrote to his friend on Nov. 1, 2014, one day before the Pats blasted Manning and the Broncos, 43-21. “I’ve got another 7 or 8 years. He has 2. That’s the final chapter. Game on.” MATT BURKE
