NFL vs. Tom Brady kicks off in New York court today Scrimmage. A federal judge was urging Brady to come to an agreement with the NFL ahead of Wednesday’s hearing. It could be now or never for Tom Brady. The star was negotiating with the National Football League on Tuesday as a federal judge pressured the league and the Players Association to reach a settlement. Before Wednesday’s scheduled hearing — the latest development in the ongoing Deflategate saga of outrage and litigation — U.S. District Court Judge Richard Berman in New York was pushing for an agreement to be reached between the NFL and the Players Association. Without an agreement, one sports lawyer told Metro, Berman could be forced to pick from one of three options: uphold the four-game suspension the NFL ordered for the Patriots quarterback, waive the suspension entirely, or stay the suspension and extend the litigation into the regular season. Berman, said Chris Brown, a founder and managing member of Boston firm Brown & Rosen, seems to want to avoid having to make that choice. “He may be a bit reluctant to issue a conclusion because so much is at stake,” Brown said. If Berman were to stay the suspension, that could

pose big risks for the Patriots, Brown said, because there would be a chance the star quarterback could end up sitting out later in the season and jeopardizing a run at the playoffs. That has to a majorpart of conversations that are happening now behind closed doors, he said. “There is so much that can be lost here for the Patriots,” Brown said. “[Patriots owner Bob] Kraft and Brady I’m sure are having lots of conversa-
tions about what he should or shouldn’t do at this particular moment.” He said it’s possible there could be a ruling at Wednesday’s hearing, but unlikely. Either way, Patriots fans should expect some kind of a punishment for Brady, Brown said. “I think Brady is going to have to accept some type of punishment,” he said. “If Tom walks away from this with no penalty, in the eyes
of the NFL that would be a black eye on the league.” Meanwhile, a brewery in Indianapolis has a special message for Patriots fans: “TOM BRADY SUX.” The message was discovered on some 20,000 cans of Sun King Brewery’s Wee Mac Scottish Ale this week. The brewery’s co-owner told the Indianapolis Star they print a new message on the bottom of cans every day — this one, the owner said, was a joke concocted by
an employee named Biscuit. Also, Brady allegedly took a trip to Las Vegas with Ben Affleck and the movie star’s nanny Christine Ouzonian. The New York Post published a picture from the getaway of the 28-year-old Affleck employee posing while wearing a set of Super Bowl rings on a private jet. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Oops. Baker apologizes for wearing knock-off ‘Free Brady’ T-shirt
Baker in the T-shirt NICOLAUS CZARNECKI / METRO
That “Free Brady” T-shirt Gov. Charlie Baker wore at the Ice Bucket Challenge on Monday was a knock-off, and he’s sorry about it. When Baker showed up at an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the State House steps Monday wearing a “Free Brady” T-shirt, he got some laughs, made a splash in headlines and showed solidarity with the Patriots quarterback.
Baker told reporters someone sent it to him and he checked in with the family of Pete Frates, a Challenge originator, to see whether they would support him donning it during the event. “They said, ‘Go for it,’” Baker said. It was all in good fun. Except, the shirt was a fake. So said Barstool Sports’ founder David Portnoy shortly after shots of Baker soaking
himself in the bootleg tee hit the Web. The Barstool shirts are navy blue. Baker’s was red. “To be honest, everybody has ‘Free Brady’ stuff. I just wish they were creative enough not to come up with exactly the same one we had already made popular,” Portnoy said. “That particular shirt doesn’t exist without my brain.” The outspoken founder of
the massively popular sportsand-boobs site kept hammering the governor — and, as a joke, the Frates family (Portnoy said he and the Ice Bucket Challenge boosters are friends) — on Twitter. And then, the unexpected happened: Baker apologized. And Portnoy accepted. Baker’s office had not yet returned a request for comment on short notice. SPENCER BUELL

Scrapper. Wakefield man brawls with seven Revere cops, knocks one out: DA One man took on seven cops in a fistfight Tuesday morning. A Wakefield man apparently did not appreciate having to stop for a construction crew removing parking cones on Revere Beach Parkway and wound up brawling with seven cops, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. Revere police flagged down Joseph Parker, 34, Monday evening and told him to stop his car while a road crew cleaned up a construction site, according to the DA’s office. Police say Parker rolled down his window and said, “I know why you stopped me.” He then exited the car, started cursing at the officer on detail and then decked the lieutenant. As Parker went after another officer, his passengers hopped out of the car and tried to restrain him while the officer called in backup. Three other officers

arrived to help detain Parker and to check on the well being of the lieutenant, who was briefly out cold. He was treated for concussion symptoms and evaluated for head injuries at Mass. General Hospital. After Parker was tossed into a cruiser, officers said he then kicked the rear window until it cracked, took
off his shoes and wedged his feet through the grate surrounding the rear compartment in an attempt to kick it out. Officers pulled Parker out of the cruiser, and things seemed to cool off. But once they tried to put him back in the car, the kicking started up again. One officer jolted Parker with a Taser to subdue him. The scene at the police station wasn’t light on any violence either. Police said Parker crouched into a boxing stance in the corner of the lockup room, put his dukes up and told the boys in blue to bring it on. After another struggle that saw several cops injured, Parker was finally subdued. He was arraigned in Chelsea District Court on Tuesday on assault, vandalism and resisting arrest charges and was held on $25,000 bail. NATE HOMAN

Ferguson
Police release video they say shows suspect with gun St. Louis County Police released a video on Tuesday that they said shows a suspect, who has been accused of firing on police, drawing a pistol from his pants during protests in strife-torn Ferguson, Missouri. Tyrone Harris, 18, was shot by police and is in critical condition. He has been charged with four counts of assault on law enforcement, five counts of armed criminal action, and one count of shooting at a vehicle. Bond for Harris, who is black, was set at $250,000. State of emergency stands, 150 arrested Ferguson. The St. Louis police chief said police would give protesters leeway to march but said authorities had to maintain safety. Police were deployed during a protest in Ferguson. / GETTY IMAGES
About 150 people have been arrested during several days of protests around Ferguson, Missouri, where largely peaceful demonstrations over police shootings of unarmed black men have been punctuated by flashes of violence. Police said on Tuesday that 22 people had been arrested overnight in Ferguson and another 63 were arrested for trying to block a highway. On Monday, 57 people were arrested for passing barricades that blocked a federal court in St. Louis. A state of emergency declared on Monday was still in effect for the Ferguson area,
where protesters have been marching and staging acts of civil disobedience to mark the first anniversary of the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white officer. Sunday night’s rallies were marred by violence that included a drive-by shooting and several instances of rocks and bottles being hurled at police. A man accused of firing on police was shot and critically wounded. On Tuesday, police braced for more protests in Ferguson, while some residents expressed frustration over what they see
as a persistent cycle of violence and bias. Adding to the tension, four white men carrying militarystyle rifles and sidearms, who said they are part of a group called “Oath Keepers,” patrolled Ferguson’s streets. The group describes itself as an association of current and former U.S. soldiers and police who aim to protect the U.S. Constitution. The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights organization, has described the “Oath Keepers” as a “fiercely anti-government, militaristic group. REUTERS

Ex-Texas Gov. Rick Perry can’t pay presidential campaign staff
Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has stopped paying his campaign staffers, several media outlets reported, saying the former Texas governor’s operations are running out of money. The Washington Post, citing campaign and Super PAC officials as well as other Republicans familiar with Perry’s operations, said fundraising for the two-time presidential candidate had dried up. Perry has struggled to gain traction in his second bid for the White House and has consistently been at the bottom of the pack of 17 Re-
publicans seeking the party’s nomination for the 2016 presidential election. Perry’s campaign manager last week told staffers after the Republican Party’s first debate that they would no longer be paid, but most are staying on as volunteers, the newspaper reported, citing one Republican familiar with the situation. A Super PAC aligned with Perry said it would step in to provide support and do some work normally handled by campaigns, such as building ground organizations, the Washington Post reported. Super PACs and candidates’ campaigns are not legally allowed to coordinate their activities, the newspaper added, although the fundraising groups can back candidates.

Illinois man pleads guilty to trying to join al Qaeda-linked group
A Chicago-area man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in federal court to a charge that he tried to travel overseas to join an al Qaeda-linked jihadist group in Syria. Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, 21, of Aurora, Illinois, was arrested in 2013 as he prepared to board a plane at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport bound for Istanbul, Turkey, prosecutors said. Tounisi, then 18, had spent four months conducting online research related to overseas travel and violent jihad, focusing specifically on Syria and the Jabhat al-Nusrah terrorist group, prosecutors said. superselective guest list, and Stern was more than happy to divulge details once back at his day job. Like, for instance, were they duped into thinking they were just going to a birthday party? “That was all horses—. Some people were left out of it, but they contacted us and said, ‘Look, please don’t tell anyone,’” Stern reveals. “They’re so secretive, those two.” Stern was apparently a big part of the happy couple’s todo, as they even drafted him into giving a speech — about which he says he was “f—ing miserable” — and invited him and his wife to come along on their honeymoon to Bora Bora. But he had to decline that one. “I put my foot down,” he says. “I said, ‘Beth, I’m going home.’ I was invited but, look, I got to get home.” And if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t be able to share all this now.
David Beckham: pro-binky In one of the more obnoxious examples of tabloid overreaching, the Daily Mail recently criticized David and Victoria Beckham for letting their 4-year-old daughter, Harper, still use a pacifier after paparazzi photos showed her with one recently, fretting that it could lead to “speech or dental issues.” Your concern is duly noted, Daily Mail. But Mr. Beckham is having none of it. “Why do people feel they have the right
to criticize a parent about their own children without having any facts?” he posted to Instagram. “Everybody who has children knows that when they aren’t feeling well or have a fever you do what comforts them best, and most of the time it’s a pacifier, so those who criticize think twice about what you say about other people’s children because actually you have no right to criticize me as a parent.” So there.

This ‘Goat’ is no greatest of all time Review. Edward Albee’s dark comedy doesn’t get quite the laughs it should. Edward Albee’s “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?” is supposed to make you uncomfortable. It’s a tale of a perfect American family that falls apart when infidelity strikes. In this case, the infidel is in love with a goat named Sylvia. Despite outward appearances, this is not a play about bestiality; at its core, it’s a tale about humanity. Part of the appeal of this cringe-inducing, Tony Awardwinning, laugh riot of a play is that the dark humor you’re embarrassed to be seen laughing at leaves you wondering about love, lust and just how much people will put up with to sustain their seemingly idyllic existence. Bad Habit Productions’ adaptation never really finds the humor at its core, leaving several scenes feeling dull and its

players seemingly in need of an oxygen infusion. Only Luke Murtha, playing the incredibly well-adjusted gay teenage son Billy, consistently delivers
Albee’s laugh-inducing zingers with any real success. The remainder of the ensemble feels largely lackluster and misguided. Veronica Anas-
tasio Wiseman never captures the fragility or rage of scorned wife Stevie. She should vacillate between being as shattered as the pottery she’s, well, shattering, to being angry enough to exact bloody revenge all in the name of protecting her family. Even Wiseman’s primal screams feel staged. Steven Emanuelson fares better as the goat-loving Martin, making you feel both repulsed by his actions yet somehow sympathetic to his plight. There are two powerful scenes involving kisses that Emanuelson imbues with enough humanity to make you feel real compassion for this flawed human being. But his scenes with best friend Ross (Dale Young) are almost unforgivably boring. Kevin Deane Parker’s set is incredible and Sylvia’s brief appearance is impressive. But a beautiful home and a finelooking specimen of goat aren’t enough to carry the weight of this Albee play. NICK DUSSAULT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Keep your palette low-key
Layer up for a plush bed
You might be obsessed with burnt orange and magenta, but considering you won’t be the one staying in the guest room, it’s probably best to exercise some restraint with the color palette. “When you talk about a guest room, it should be inclusive. There are going to be a number of different types of people staying there; it shouldn’t really be a personalized room,” Hobbs explains. Instead, she says pick a neutral base, such as white, tan, chocolate brown or charcoal grey, which is Hobbs’ personal favorite. “Charcoal is the new white and the new black. It’s really this fabulous base color that can be used in so many different applications,” she says. “I find that it’s very versatile, adds warmth to a space and blends well with so many other colors.”
The key to a luxurious bed is about much more than choosing an attractive duvet cover. Hobbs has a method of layering, which she calls “dressing a bed,” that makes all the difference. She begins with a feather bed on top of the mattress, followed by the mattress cover, high-endcotton base sheets and top sheets. Then she finishes it with a duvet inside a cotton insert, pillow shams and decorative throw pillows. “I think it creates a really sumptuous bed when you layer your bedding,” she explains. than a beautiful welcome basket.” It doesn’t matter whether you splurge on extravagant items or go for cute budget-friendly finds like candy — the key is that it’s personal. “Maybe that person likes bird watching and you have a little pair of binoculars,” suggests Hobbs. Another fun idea: Create a localthemed basket to help guests familiarize themselves with the area with maps, brochures and local products such as wines, syrups or jams.
‘Slash’ rooms Unless you have guests in your home on a regular basis, Hobbs actually discourages having a guest room that serves no other purpose. “I find that for most people, the guest room tends to be a discarded room, or a room that’s a shrine to someone who shows up once a year. The room literally sits empty and dark. I encourage people to use their whole home and have that guest room have purpose. That purpose can be a home office, a meditation room, a spare place for kids to play,” she explains. While the room can have any function, it should not be used for storage. It should be “a purposeful functioning room within your home that is pulling double duty as a room that we use that we also transition for guests,” she says.

Step into Fuse’s rooms with a view The new complex in Cambridge sits right next to the Alewife Brook Reservation. MEGAN JOHNSON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
It lacks the historic grandeur of Harvard Square or the startup culture of Kendall Square, but the Alewife section of Cambridge is certainly making a name for itself. Known as a primarily industrial area and the Red Line’s end zone, Alewife’s prime attribute is often declared to be the Fresh Pond Mall. But a new residential building, Fuse Cambridge, is
looking to change that. The entirely rental building, which will have 244 units, is looking to capitalize on its proximity to the Alewife Brook Reservation, a 120-acre urban wild that continues into Arlington and Somerville. “The building offers tremendous views of this beautiful reservation, and gives access to get out there to go for a bike ride or a walk,” says Sean Sacks, director at Hines, a real estate investment firm. “We call it ‘the best backyard in Cambridge.’” Sacks says the type of tenants he envisions for the building range from young professionals in the Cambridge tech and life sciences scene, all the way to folks in the suburbs who are down-
sizing and want access to the benefits of the city. “Folks that appreciate being able to walk outside their apartment into the community and go for a 20-mile bike ride, or a 5-mile run in the morning,” says Sacks, who anticipates a mid-September opening for the building. “Folks that are focused on the healthy lifestyles.” The apartments, which include studios and one-, twoand three-bedroom units, feature premium kitchens with stainless steel appliances, white quartz kitchen countertops and two-tone cabinetry. Most units have stunning views of the bucolic reservation, while an open layout and high ceilings allow sun to stream in all day. Fuse Cambridge also fea-

a mosaic-tile sundeck. But the aspect Hines prides itself on most is the integration of nature into the building, which is exhibited in features like the lobby’s living green wall. “It’s a live wall of plants,” says Sacks. “Living, breathing art. We want to accentuate the connectivity to the outdoors.” From the two-story glass lobby, guests can also take a
look at two massive willow trees on the reservation, a view that the building was specifically constructed to highlight. That use of the reservation as the ultimate scenery is continued into the residences, most of which have huge, oversized windows providing a scenic view of the urban wild. “There’s no better art to me than natural art,” says Sacks.

Butler ready to replace Revis NFL. The Patriots return to the field in 2015 with a different look to their secondary.
Browner are history. So is Kyle Arrington, formerly the slot corner. This is the part where we’re supposed to tell you how the Pats replaced these guys. There’s no replacing Revis, though.
Believe it or not, the worst part about the Patriots offseason is not the whole Deflategate fiasco. Nope, there was an even worse moment, and it came when Darrelle Revis agreed to sign with the New York Jets over re-signing in New England. That, and not underinflated footballs, could actually have an effect on the Patriots’ success on the field. It’s no secret that the addition of Revis transformed the Patriots secondary from one of the worst to one of the best. Arguably the best cover corner in the NFL, Revis could be left alone with anybody and put them on the infamous island. The Patriots went ahead and signed the physical Brandon Browner, too, and the rest is history. Now, Revis and
Front-runners: Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Tarell Brown What a difference a year makes for Malcolm Butler. Here’s a guy who went undrafted and played his way onto the team last season. Now, he’s being called the team’s best cornerback. Making one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history will do that to you. Needless to say, Butler has huge cleats to fill this season. The one thing Logan Ryan has that many of his fellow cornerbacks don’t have is familiarity in the Patriots’ system. While Ryan has yet to stand out in his first two NFL seasons, he will get a big opportunity for more reps in camp. The Pats went out and

signed a few cornerbacks to short-term deals this summer including Tarell Brown. Brown has eight seasons under his belt, seven with the 49ers before playing last season with
the Raiders, where he made a career-high 55 combined tackles. Brown had offseason surgery on his foot, and is now ready to prove he’s fully recovered. He’s also been lining up
Not far behind: Bradley Fletcher, Robert McClain, Darryl Roberts Bradley Fletcher and Robert McClain are two other offseason signings by the Patriots as they hope to patch together a cornerback unit that can compete. Fletcher is entering his seventh NFL season, having spent the first four in St. Louis before playing two seasons in Philadelphia. He didn’t exactly fare well in Philadelphia, though. McClain enters his fifth NFL season and, at 5 feet 9 inches and 195 pounds, has a smaller build than the 6-foot, 205-pound Fletcher. Like Brown and Fletcher, McClain signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. Darryl Roberts was drafted in the 7th round by the Patriots in this year’s draft and is playing well enough that he could sneak on. JIMMY TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
