Priced out of Bushwick, art collective journeys into East New York Vanguard. Art nonprofit Norte Maar’s relocation from Bushwick to Cypress Hills gives some locals pause. Across the borough from the epicenter of millennial cool that is Williamsburg lies a part of town that isn’t yet synonymous with the Brooklyn ideal found on cable TV shows. Cypress Hills, snuggled just to the north of East New York and abutting Woodhaven, Queens, to the east, was one of the last remaining options where art curators and supporters Jason Andrew and Julia Gleich could set up shop. “Like everybody else, we were trying to find an inexpensive place to live in New York,” Andrew said. The two co-founded nonprofit arts collective Norte Maar almost a decade ago, soon after settling into a still-affordable Bushwick apartment along the L train in 2006. Over the years, however, the same neighborhood that gave Norte Maar room to expand its arts operation was soon inundated with friendly competition. More than 50 galleries operate in Bushwick’s art-saturated borders these days. “We were struggling to remain there, but as the real estate market exploded there, it became impossible,” Andrew explained. Norte Maar settled on a two-floor row house nestled on Pine Street in Cy-

press Hills. Derelict months earlier, Andrew said his neighbors along the sleepy street are already stopping by for dinners. Still, Andrew said he was fully conscious of what Norte Maar’s move might look like to longtime neighbors scared of change. Sections of Cypress Hills are included in Mayor Bill
de Blasio’s broad plan to rezone the adjacent East New York. The mayor and administration officials have spent the last year pushing an affordable-housing plan that calls on rezoning the neighborhoods, adding some 1,200 units through 2017. Real estate company MNS recently listed the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Bushwick at $2,098. The median income in East New York is about $34,000, while median rent throughout the neighborhood is thought to be less than $1,000. “They’re fearful and label artists as gentrifiers, that they’ll change a neighborhood and displace folks,” Andrew added. To that end, he and Gleich told Metro they were committed to working hand-in-hand with the community, whether by relaunching their arts-literacy program that successfully connected artists with local children in Bushwick
or by collaborating with existing local arts groups. “We’re very eager to see how we can bring some of our programs into Cypress Hills,” Andrew said. Yet some such groups are still apprehensive. Having been raised in the neighborhood, Catherine Green founded ARTs East New York as a means to bring affordable cultural programming to the area that may also address East New York’s own socioeconomic struggles. “It’s a little insulting to have other organizations come in and say they can help us,” Green said. “No, we can really help ourselves. We have the ideas. We have the will. What we haven’t had is access to the same resources.” Green said she isn’t opposed to working with new groups, including Norte Maar, who she said has been in touch with her. She said that kind of collaboration will take a sensitive balance but “there’s always room to work together.” Green added one of her biggest fears remains seeing the East New York artists who can barely afford to stay in the area be displaced as new artists and organizations move in. Those changes came to Bushwick, Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy, she said, and can certainly happen in East New York. “We’ve seen the blueprint,” she said. “We’re the last neighborhood standing.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

Officers were escorting Austin Stevenson, 25, to the 23rd Precinct stationhouse on East 102nd Street. Indie taxi owners protest in front of TLC Fair play. Medallion owners demand app-based car companies be regulated. More than two dozen independent taxi medallion owners rallied Sunday morning in front of the Taxi and Limousine Commission office asking to be heard. The owners demand that app-based car companies, such as Uber and other for-hire vehicles, be held accountable under the same rules and regulations they are subjected to by the city and not be allowed to pick up street hails. “If you click on your phone and request a car or hail, you’re basically doing the same thing as putting your hand up and hail and say I want a yellow

cab,” said Manjot Gill, 25, son of a medallion owner and organizer of the rally. “That exclusive right was sold to these taxi medallion owners for hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not for a million-plus dollars. Now you’re telling me that these new companies come in here and don’t charge for anything to have that right. There is no fairness in that.”
Between 2006 and 2014, New York City sold 1,400 medallions to the public and with it the right to hail in the streets. The city generated about $850 million in revenues after the medallions sold for almost $900,000 a piece. “That person’s voice needs to be heard in this debate and they need to be included at the table negotiating how this industry
needs to be reformed,” said Norman Siegel, the attorney representing the medallion owners. “These folks are individual men and women, these are the small guys and New York has always vetted for the little person, so we have to get their voices and faces out there so people know who is being affected by this new technology.” He added that after the first rally held on Wednesday in front of City Hall, TLC reached out and are in talks to hold a meeting with the medallion owners, but is disappointed he has not heard from the mayor’s office. The Taxi Medallion Owner/Drivers Association represents roughly 6,000 independent owners and drivers. KARINA E. CUEVAS @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Bond was president of the SPLC from 1971 to 1979. From 1998 to 2010, he was chairman of the NAACP. By the time Bond burst onto the national stage in summer of 1968, the then-28-year-old activist already was on his way to joining the pantheon of American civil rights leaders.

Passengers. There was no immediate word on whether anyone survived. An aircraft with 54 people on board crashed in Indonesia’s remote and mountainous region of Papua on Sunday, a government official said, the latest in a string of aviation disasters in the Southeast Asian nation. “The latest information is that the Trigana aircraft that lost contact has been found at Camp 3, Ok Bape district in the Bintang Mountains regency,” Air Transportation Director General Suprasetyo told reporters. Earlier, the National Search and Rescue Agency said a twin-turboprop plane had lost contact with air traffic control as it flew over the forested area of eastern Indonesia but efforts to trace it were difficult because of failing light. Trigana Air Operations Director Beni Sumaryanto said that within 30 minutes of hearing that the aircraft was missing, the airline sent another

According to the official BASARNAS Twitter account, the aircraft, a short-haul ATR 42-300 airliner belonging to Trigana Air Service and built in France and Italy, was carrying 44 adult passengers, five crew and five children and infants. The plane was flying between Jayapura’s Sentani Airport and Oksibil, due south of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. Air transport is commonly used in Papua, Indonesia’s easternmost province, where land travel is often impossible. New report. IAAF suppressed study of admitted dope cheats World athletics’ governing body, the IAAF, has suppressed a 2011 survey that reveals that up to a third of the world’s top competitors admitted using banned performanceenhancing techniques, Britain’s Sunday Times and German broadcaster ARD/WDR reported. The authors of the study, which involved interviews with 1,800 athletes at the 2011 world championships in South Korea, were told to sign a confidentiality agreement a month after the information had been collected and analyzed, the newspaper said. The revelations are the latest in a series of damaging blows for the sport in the countdown to the start of this year’s world championships in Beijing on Aug. 22. Earlier investigations by ARD and the Sunday Times prompted claims that more than 800 athletes tested between 2001 and 2012 had suspicious test results that were not followed up by the IAAF. The IAAF has since initiated disciplinary action against 28 athletes after retesting samples from the 2005 and 2007 world championships with new technology that can uncover previously undetectable substances. The organization came under heavy fire

“The IAAF’s delaying publication for so long without good reason is a serious encroachment on the freedom of publication.” The researchers said in a statement
from the authors of the 2011 study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Tuebingen in Germany and leaked to The Sunday Times and ARD/WDR. The statement added that the IAAF had not commissioned the survey but had used its influence to suppress the findings. Reacting to the latest accusations in a statement, the IAAF said it “had never vetoed” publication of the survey and understood it had twice been rejected for publication in a scientific journal. It also questioned the validity of the research. “The IAAF does however have serious reservations as to the interpretation of the results made by the research group as confirmed by high-profile experts in social science who reviewed the publication on our request,” it said. American student life for decades. Proponents of making the tests optional say the switch can help schools become more diverse and admit students who will thrive even though they may have lagged other applicants on scores. “It was really about making sure that the right students, students for
whom GW would be a great place, were not discouraged from applying,” said Karen Stroud Felton, George Washington’s dean of admissions. The test-optional trend has accelerated in recent years, with more than two dozen schools dropping the requirement since the spring of 2014, according to the National Center for
Fair and Open Testing, which advocates for testoptional admissions. They include Wisconsin’s Beloit College and Temple University in Philadelphia. But defenders of the SAT and ACT tests of math, reading and writing say they level the playing field for applicants and provide an objective measure for scholarships. REUTERS

If you are a guy who carves life-size cattle out of butter, a woman who owns a whopping great rabbit or a politician trying to become president of the United States, this is your time: The Iowa State Fair is open for business. Every four years, this midwest Burning Man of pork chops, funnel cakes and animal husbandry becomes the gauntlet through which White House aspirants must run, and it is the setting for my three things to watch this week in politics.

Expect more contenders to drop in as the next two weeks go by, and with luck we may see one of the gaes that have helped make the fair famous. Fred Thompson in his city slicker loafers. Mitt Romney declaring corporations are people. Personally, I’d love to see Bernie Sanders take the stage with Def Leppard.
1. GETTING PIGGY WITH IT: More than a million people attend the fair, and some of the top candidates were
2. BUMPER CARS: All the numbers say Hillary Clinton still has a likely lock on the Democratic nomination, but
some stumbles on her part have triggered the latest game on the Midway — guessing who might be able to push her aside. The aforementioned Sen. Sanders is getting some oomph from the Left. Martin O’Malley keeps waving his arms like a juggler. And while Al Gore denies any interest, watch speculation this week over the idea of Joe Biden giving it a whirl. 3. SIDESHOW: And Donald Trump has been called for jury duty. He reports Monday. My prediction is that the judge will quickly dismiss him, but Trump will stick around to oer his opinion anyway. It’s only fair.

Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.
Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a trained health care professional. And the great news is: There is a free report and information kit available that tells you everything you need to know about this treatment. It also tells you all about cuttingedge medical clinics right here in New York City that are offering this cutting-edge treatment with tremendous success. To get your information kit or to schedule a NoObligation Risk Free Shoulder Screening simply call 800-627-PAIN (7246).
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would increase fees on some Mexican visas and all border crossing cards as part of a broader plan to force Mexico to pay for a wall along the southern U.S. border. Trump has made immigration a central plank of his campaign. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he said he would deport all undocumented immigrants and rescind President Barack Obama’s executive orders on immigration. The orders, if enacted, could protect as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. In a policy paper issued on Sunday, Trump said he would increase fees on temporary visas for Mexican chief executives, diplomats and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) workers if Mexico does not agree to pay for the wall. It permits the temporary crossborder movement of business travelers within the region. Trump said he would also impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages and increase fees at ports of entry from Mexico. Foreign aid cuts and tariffs would also be considered. The U.S. military has canceled a pretrial hearing for suspects in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, a military spokesman said on Sunday, in another setback for the government in its efforts to try the five men being held at Guantanamo. A defense department spokesman said the hearing, originally scheduled for Aug. 24 to Sept. 4, was canceled by the military judge. “The judge cited issues that remain unresolved with regard to a claimed defense counsel conflict of interest,” said Commander Gary Ross. Limited supplies of baby poultry and barn space to house them will hamper U.S. farmers’ efforts to rebuild ravaged egg supplies after the nation’s worst-ever outbreak of bird flu. As a result of the shortages and the loss of more than 48 million chickens and turkeys to the disease, egg prices will climb higher than previously expected this year, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Frozen wholesale turkey prices are expected to be up to 19 percent higher for the key Thanksgiving holiday than they were a year ago. REUTERS

Meek Mill maybe sort of calls for a cease-fire in Drake feud
1
Meek Mill doesn’t want any more drama.
Our long national nightmare was almost over, as Meek Mill revealed briefly his desire to put this whole business with Drake behind him. The rapper posted a lengthy call for peace in an Instagram comment, but then quickly deleted it. But this is the Internet, so naturally someone caught a screen grab before it was lost forever. So what did Meek Mill have to say for himself ?
A lot, as it turns out. But most importantly: “I’m not entertaining no rap/ real beef over Drake,â€? he wrote. “I don’t feel like I gotta try to prove myself to the people and end up in a real situation over this fake rap s—. ‌ All this killer s— on social media is like walking ya self into prison and that ain’t my lifestyle and don’t really make sense to me.â€? So ‌ there you have it? I guess?

Ben Affleck turned 43 over the weekend, and how did he celebrate? By linking back up with soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Garner to take their three kids to Orlando, Florida, for a visit to Harry Potter World. The whole family has been in Atlanta recently while Garner shoots a movie, so Orlando isn’t too far of a trip. The family “was just walking around the park like normal people. Can you imagine? “They looked like they were having a great day together, a source tells E! makes at least corporate sense for Affleck, being that he’s currently repping DC Comics and Warner Bros. as Batman in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, so obviously couldn’t go to Disney World, what with Disney owning Marvel and all. Let’s just hope his daughters aren’t massive “Frozen fans.

“Fraction Of An Inch” Success And Failure With Popular Vital Information All Knee Arthritis Sufferers Advanced Knee Arthritis Treatment Offers New Hope For Pain Sufferers In New York City
Nothing Spreads The Word Like Caring Doctors and Results - Knee arthritis sufferers have swarmed the OsteoRelief Center in Manhattan, NYC and Norhtern New j Jersey ever since word got out of their advanced medical procedure for knee arthritis
Viscosupplementation. This all sounds great - in theory. But there is a BIG problem with this treatment. Allow Me To Explain... While doing research on this treatment, I traveled to amedical clinic in New York City, This clinic had an excellent reputation and I got to speak not only with doctors but with several patients who ranted and raved about the results. Many said they had tried countless other treatments in the past... including viscosupplementation... but nothing worked until they had viscosupplemtation at this clinic. I was skeptical, so I asked one of the doctors why. How could it be possible that the same treatment that did not work when done elsewhere... was getting results when done here? His response was honest and a little shocking. And the bottom line was... “All Doctors Are Human And Sometimes They Mess Up” I discovered that this treatment must be VERY
PRECISE. In other words, the doctor must be very accurate and actually get the lubricating fluid precisely into the arthritic joint space or the treatment will be rendered useless. Many doctors do not want to admit it - but it is very easy to miss the joint space and alter the treatment results. In fact, research shows that doctors doing these types of joint procedures without advanced imaging may miss the joint space as much as 30% of the time.
Technology To The Rescue Thankfully technology is solving this problem. How? It’s making doctors much more accurate and this treatment much more effective. Advanced imaging is now available that allows doctors to actually see directly into the joint space and watch the treatment. Doctors can see, or check, if the lubricating fluid goes directly into the joint space - or misses. The doctor knows if the applied treatment has been a success... or failure... INSTANTLY.

The dating game After 6.5 million people watched her go out with 25 guys on national television, dating is sure to be a bit different for Dorfman than it is for most, but the 28-year-old is taking a break from the dating scene. “Right now, I don’t really care about dating. I’m just having fun with my friends,” she says. “A typical night for us is just going out to dinner. Mondays are huge for us; we watch ‘The Bachelor’ or ‘Bachelorette,’ spread out cheese and drink Palm Breeze. Just two years ago, Andi Dorfman was an unknown assistant district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia. Then, last year, she swapped the final rose for a rock and got engaged to ex-professional baseball player and fellow Atlanta resident Josh Murray on national television. But after a rough public breakup, now she’s living it up as a single lady in the Big Apple. We caught up with the former “Bachelorette” to get the scoop on her new life in New York City, latest on-camera venture and a tell-all book that’s in the works.

Not only does Greta Gerwig act in movies by her boyfriend, the filmmaker Noah Baumbach — she writes them with him, too. They wrote their first collaboration, “Frances Ha,” over email. Their latest is “Mistress America,” which stars Gerwig as Brooke, a mysterious and possibly crazy New York kook who takes a young, inexperienced freshman coed (Lola Kirke) under her wing, with quip-strewn, but less than ideal, results. Brooke has this life of odd jobs — including teaching at SoulCycle — that I feel is something that is very NYC right now. Brooke was a character who, to us, felt like she belonged to an older time. wanted to capture, even though we couldn’t literally capture it. It’s interesting to see a portrait of female friendship that is built around idolization. Making it between an 18-year-old and a 30-yearold was exciting because when you’re 18, you’re prone to idolizing people. But you also don’t know that you’re capable of hurting an adult. Adults seem like static, unhurtable people. Even your parents, you can yell at them, but it’s a different thing. Teachers seem unhurtable. I had the experience at 18 of realizing, “No, you’re an agent in the world, and you can really make somebody feel terrible.” Which is a hard lesson to learn.

I have that in me. Part of the reason, I think, is that my first love was theater. I’ve always felt those movies were closer to theater in some ways. The language is the most important part of the filmmaking — the words are being hurled around, and the meaning is made by the actors in the room together, not in the editing room. Actors are often quite isolated — “this shot, then this shot, then this shot, then this shot.” It’s more organic and everyone’s in the room together.

If you’re over the age of 60, you’re at risk for having or developing Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), which if left untreated can lead to severe pain, numbness, impotence, non-healing sores...even amputation. And if you’re a smoker, have diabetes or have had a heart attack or stroke your risks are increased significantly. The good news is that PAD can be easily treated with our fast, minimally invasive technique.
Do You Have PAD?

Stop being so productive! Burn your to-do list. The reason we aren’t getting ahead in our lives and careers is because we do too darn much. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri raquel.laneri@metro.us
Who of us isn’t busy? Between constantly responding to emails, attending multiple meetings a day and taking care of our familial and social obligations, it’s a wonder we get anything done. And often we don’t! Or, well, we get a ton of small, inconsequential stuff out of the way but barely make a dent when it comes to the projects and goals that really matter.
“Focusing on time management and productivity is actually making our problems worse,” says business psychologist Tony Crabbe, author of “Busy: How to Thrive in a World of Too Much.” “But all that that does is make people busier, less effective and, quite frankly, less happy.” Crabbe points to a study that found we consume six times as much information than we did in 1986 — but that we produce an astonishing 200 times more. “So you think, ‘Wait a minute. I’m producing 200 times more, and everyone else is consuming six times more.’ That’s just a ton of white noise nobody is paying attention to,” he says. His solution? Stop doing so much! But, how can we cut back on our workload without, well, getting fired? Crabbe gives us some guidance.
Surf your workload
When confronted with a ton of responsibilities, many of us respond by organizing every aspect of our day so we can squeeze in as much work as possible. “People think, if they can get in control of their time, things will be OK, but that’s unhelpful,” says Crabbe. Think of a surfer. “The surfer doesn’t try to control the sea — or catch every wave,” he says. “Surfers succeed by choosing the right waves, taking risks and completely immersing themselves in the moment. They master the wave.” So instead of trying to control every aspect of your life in an attempt to get everything done, pick the most important things and give those your all. Even if that means sacrificing a few of the smaller tasks, the risk will yield greater rewards.
Tear up your to-do list To-do lists? Totally useless. In fact, these scraps of paper only aid us in completing mostly meaningless tasks. “A todo list has 20 to 30 things that are not important enough to remember otherwise, which is why we have to put them on a to-do list,” scoffs Crabbe. “You don’t put the stuff that’s going to change your life. You could argue that the very act of doing to-do lists drives your attention away from the stuff that’s really important.” Crabbe says that he would have never put “write a book” or “spend time with my family” on a to-do list.
Always have a ‘because’
It takes cajones to skip a meeting or ignore an email from a client because you are busy
creating. But if you offer concrete reasons for why you have shirked or put off certain activities, people might just respect you. “I had a client get upset that I wasn’t responding to his emails right away,” says Crabbe. “So I called him up and said, ‘Look, I only look at emails once or twice a day to allow me to focus and create. Otherwise, I can’t get anything done.’ And you know, he went from being slightly irritated to inspired.”

Ignore your email Email is a great communication tool; it’s also incredibly distracting. Let’s face it: Not every email needs a response — even fewer need a response ASAP. And if we are constantly ďŹ elding messages and requests, then we’ll never get that project, article or brilliant strategy thunk-up. “Deliberately play with not getting your inbox to zero,â€? Crabbe suggests. “Compete with your colleagues about how many unopened emails you have.â€? And leave your phone at home if you ďŹ nd the email alerts distracting. As for those meeting invites that pop up? Ignore those, too. “How many times do we go to a meeting out of fear? If the meeting doesn’t pertain to you, decline. What’s the worst that can happen?â€?

HOW TO GET AHEAD
Anyone can be good at math — as long as parents don’t get in the way. According to new research published in Psychology Science, it turns out that “math-anxious adults could be preventing their kids from being the next Pythagoras. Ugh, mom and dad really do ruin everything. The study, conducted by
a team at the University of Chicago, observed 438 ďŹ rstand second-graders and their parents, assessing them on both their math ability and their math anxiety at the beginning and end of the school year. But while the parents did show to have an eect on their kids’ performance, math aptitude doesn’t appear to be genetic. Math-anxious parents only negatively aected their kids’ achievements when they
helped them regularly with homework. “We often don’t think about how important parents’ own attitudes are in determining their children’s academic achievement,â€? researcher Sian Beilock said in a release. “But our work suggests that if a parent is walking around saying, ‘Oh, I don’t like math,’ or, ‘This stu makes me nervous,’ kids pick up on this messaging, and it aects their success.â€? How to turn your Ph.D. into a job Don’t let those 10 years of graduate school go to waste.
RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri raquel.laneri@metro.us
Only 50-60 percent of Ph.D. candidates finish their dissertation within 10 years of starting graduate school. ISTOCK
Thinking about getting a Ph.D.? Most experts will tell you it’s a bad idea. Students, on average, take between seven and 10 years to complete their degree — if they finish it at all. Plus, it’s gotten increasingly difficult to get a job in academia, with universities replacing tenured professors with adjuncts — who often earn, according to Karen Kelsky, “Wal-Mart wages.” Which is why Kelsky, a former professor, started blogging about the academic job market and offering consulting services. “I knew my graduate students were desperate and scared about this job market yet weren’t getting the information they needed to deal with it,” says Kelsky, whose new book is “The Professor is In: The Essential Guide to Turning Your Ph.D. Into a Job.” We asked her for some of her tips.

Graduate school isn’t
just about doing research 24/7: It’s also about getting a job. “People go to graduate school because they imagine they’re going to have a career at the end of it,” says Kelsky. That means starting your job search on the first day. “Look at the job ads and ask: ‘What are employers looking for, and how can I orient myself to be a candidate for this job?’” she advises. Teaching experience — not just as a T.A., but as the leader of your own class, will help, too.
Think of your thesis as a means to a job Still, your dissertation is very important and having the right topic is key. “It should be timely and about something your field considers important or relevant,” says Kelsky. Students should be able to figure out whether a topic is a good one from observing their field and talking with their advisor. And, as you’re writing, think about what chapters you can isolate for publication. “You have to publish at least one journal article during grad school — and probably more than one — before you go on the market,” Kelsky says.
Network, network, network
Sure, academics may not be known for their social skills, but that doesn’t mean they can stay shut in their ivory tower, closed off from the world. You have to hustle. “Relationships are the core to hiring,” says Kelsky. “While you’re in school, go to your field’s major national conference and present a paper at it. Later, organize a panel at it. That’s how you network and get your name out there.”
Keep your options open Just because you’re in graduate school doesn’t mean you have to go into academia. After all, Ph.D. candidates have many skills that are valued in all different kinds of job markets — from public speaking to statistics to writing on deadline. “I understand that it can be very painful and difficult to let go of the identity of professor or academic because a Ph.D. takes so many years,” says Kelsky. “But if you do it, this whole world opens up to you, and you see all the skills you have and all the directions you can go. So I encourage people to do that even while they’re in grad school before it’s forced on them by sort of a crisis situation.”

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is just fine with allowing his starters to pitch well into the hundreds when it comes to pitch count as he has made it clear, of late, that he wants to give his bullpen — specifically Dellin Betances — a rest. “To me, it’s throwing [relievers] too many days in a row or throwing them four out of five days [that’s the issue],” Girardi told MLB.com. “That’s just an awful lot to ask of a reliever. We do two in a row and then we do three out of four, but we don’t do much more than that.”

The Mets also fell on Sunday, losing 8-1 to Pittsburgh. •
The Yankees have had a tumultuous August so far, with a five-game losing streak and a three-game win streak to their name. But a 6-8 record in the season’s next-to-last month is the bottom line. And for a team that has its sights set on a playoff berth, playing below .500 baseball for any stretch of time is cause for concern. The Yanks looked as though they were headed in the right direction just 24 hours ago as they were coming off back-to-back road wins over their immediate threat in the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays. But Sunday, Toronto capitalized on a Yankees miscue with two outs in the third as Carlos Beltran lost a fly ball hit by Troy Tulowitzki in the sun. It extended an inning in which Josh Donaldson would single in a run and Jose Bautista would belt a two-

The Yankees are back at the Stadium tonight to begin a three-game set with Minnesota. The Twins have been having their own issues as they have fallen off the pace in the AL Central and now own a .500 record at 5858. C.C. GENO LIKELY DONE IN NY
As news filtered out of Florham Park, New Jersey, last week surrounding the broken jaw of starting quarterback Geno Smith, there seemed to be a familiar refrain from those who know this organization: same old Jets. Even with new leadership, these strange stories seem to happen to only one team in pro football. Now we know that is not the case. Heck, the Giants are still waiting for JPP to sign his franchise tender and report to camp after severely injuring his hand in a Fourth of July fireworks accident. But getting back to the Jets, we now know more of the particulars surrounding the punch that was thrown by linebacker IK Enemkpali. Money was owed and it was not paid. Voices were raised and Smith reportedly put his finger in the face of Enemkpali before a punch was thrown. Smith is out six to 10 weeks and Enemkpali was let go and is now a member of the Buffalo Bills after being claimed off of waivers. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting quarterback for the Jets. Blame goes all the way around, as Jets head coach Todd Bowles said, “It takes

It is not about a lack of leadership or respect in the locker room, it is the mindset of the player, and that is the huge concern that people have always had about Geno Smith. He does not seem to have the maturity level that

you need to play the most important position in the NFL. There always seemed to be something missing, even though he had all the physical tools that you’re looking for to be successful in the NFL. There was the incident on the airplane when he refused to get off of his cellphone. Do many starting quarterbacks in the NFL curse at their fans when walking off the field? The answer to that is no. How about missing a team meeting? As we saw last year, Smith missed a team meeting in San Diego because he was reportedly at a movie theater. Good times. I don’t blame Smith for getting assaulted. I blame him for not knowing any better and putting himself in the situation in the first place. He had too much to lose. He was a starting quarterback in the NFL, and I use the past tense for a reason. He is hurt now and I don’t think he will ever start another game for the Jets. After all of this, if the brain trust for the Jets still thinks Smith could be a solution at the quarterback position, then shame on them. Then it really would be same old Jets.
