Pope visit just one of September traffic woes Events. Papal visit to be quickly followed by a concert and U.N. general assembly. New York City streets will likely be as packed as the calendar of major events coming within a span of a few days in September, including Pope Francis’ first visit to the city. Police will still have to deal with street closures and security risks days even after the pope flies out for Philadelphia. Immediately after the papal visit comes a massive concert in Central Park and days of dignitaries heading in and out of the United Nations. On Sept. 26, thousands of New Yorkers and tourists alike are also expected to flock to Central Park’s Great Lawn for the Global Citizen Festival, with headliners including Beyonce, Pearl Jam and Coldplay. That same weekend, President Barack Obama is expected to join international leaders including Russian President Vladmir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for about three days for the U.N.’s general debate starting Sept. 28. Bustling streets and subway stations across Manhattan will definitely mean increased mass transit service, said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz. Specific routes and times will be released closer to the first day of the pope’s visit on Sept. 24. The same goes for street

‘Habemus papam’ and traffic woes September will end not with a bang or a whimper, but with a snarl — of the traffic variety. Hard on the heels of Pope Francis’ visit will come a mega-concert in Central Park, followed by the United Nations general assembly, which includes an appearance by President Barack Obama for that extra bit of traffic tie-up.

closures, which, for security reasons, the NYPD typically releases immediately before major scheduled events. At the very least, New Yorkers can likely expect heavy security around the papal residence on East 72nd between Fifth and Madison. The same can be said for the immediate vicinity of the United Nations, during which broad swaths of midtown Manhattan are shut down for almost a week. NYC & Company, the city’s tourism organization, described September as an already typically busy month, which actually kicks off in late August with the U.S. Open in Queens and is soon followed by Fashion Week. Estimates on just how many people are expected to flock to the city for the weekend in late September were not available. Still, City Hall officials tell Metro occupancy rates across the boroughs’ roughly 103,000 hotel rooms have been hitting 90 percent in September without the papal visit. They expect to exceed that number this year. The de Blasio administration confirmed with Metro that agencies including the NYPD, the Department of Transportation and the MTA have met multiple times to coordinate efforts. Last week, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton joked about security preparations ahead of the pope’s visit. “I’m loading up on the Excedrin already,” Bratton told reporters on Thursday. Humans of New York raises $2 million for Pakistan In just three days, Humans of New York raised $2 million for a Pakistani nonprofit organization. Brandon Stanton, creator of the famous

Facebook page, traveled to Pakistan and has been posting photos and stories of its people. At one point, he encountered Syeda Ghulam Fatima, affectionately known as Pakistan’s Harriet Tubman, a woman who has worked tirelessly to free her people from bonded labor — a modern form of

slavery — at the brick kilns. Fatima’s organization, The Bonded Labour Liberation Front, helps individuals and families escape brick kiln owners whose violent methods keep them as indentured slaves. Pakistan has about 20,000 brick kilns and an estimate of 40 families work in each. They are

required to make 1,000 bricks per day. Many of the people came to work there after personal tragedies or crises in which they needed money, therefore agreeing to a small loan in exchange for work. Over time, the loans grow with interest, making it impossible for most to pay them off, which in turn

condemns them to work them off the rest of their lives. There’s an estimated 4.5 million people working under bonded labor in Pakistan. More than 65,000 people have donated to the Indiegogo campaign, which was slated to conclude last night. KARINA E. CUEVAS

Three alleged gang members indicted for Red Hook shooting Three men were indicted for a shooting earlier this month in Red Hook that left five people wounded, including a pregnant woman who miscarried. Marquise Frederick, Quamari McAllister and

Elijah Wells, all 19, from Brooklyn, were named in a 20-count indictment that includes attempted murder, assault and other charges. “In light of the horrific shooting in Red Hook that caused a young woman to lose her baby, we’re determined to put these defendants away for as long as possible,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.

On Aug. 3 at around 10:48 p.m., the three men pulled up in a green Ford Explorer outside 9A Dwight Street near Delavan Street in Red Hook, stepped out of the car and proceeded to shoot in the direction of the victims. They then fled in the vehicle. A surveillance camera outside captured the incident and police tracked the vehicle back to McAl-

lister’s father. Investigators revealed the shooting was likely in retaliation for a shooting the night before where a member of the “Gowanus Crew” or “Oww Oww” — a subset of the Bloods gang — was hit. The suspects are allegedly members of the gang. They are being held without bail and if convicted can face up to 25 years in prison. KARINA E. CUEVAS

De Blasio: Job is ‘seven days a week’ Really? The mayor is defending his leisure time after coming under fire for being MIA at the scene of an armed standoff. Mayor Bill de Blasio shot back at criticism that his private schedule might be interfering with his day job. “This job is a seven-daya-week job,” he said. “There is no such thing in this job as being off-duty. I hope people know that.” The mayor’s activities once again came under speculation after NY1 reported that de Blasio was working out at the Park Slope YMCA mid-morning Friday for almost two hours while police and fire authorities responded to an armed standoff in Staten Island, during which a fire lieutenant was shot. In December, de Blasio caught heat for working out at his old neighborhood gym during the funeral of former U.S. Rep. Herman Badillo. The mayor said Tuesday any questions about his administration’s job almost two years into his time in office are belied by its progress on broader issues including crime, employment and education. “I think people paying attention recognize a lot of work is being done and done effectively,” he said. Kenneth Sherrill, who spent decades teaching political science at CUNY’s Hunter College, cautioned

De Blasio / GETTY IMAGES

it was unrealistic for any elected official to assume the public ignores bad press. “You can’t say to the average voter, ‘Why aren’t you paying attention?’” Sherrill said. Sherrill added that de Blasio has in many ways been “the least imperial mayor” in a generation, but that the former public advocate’s campaign for mayor sold a candidate who was in touch with the lives of everyday New Yorkers. For months, the de Blasio administration has waged battle on headlines about rising crime and homelessness, as well as sinking approval numbers across demographics. “People would be unaffected by the headlines,” Sherrill said, “if they were given good reason to reject them.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

The play’s the thing. Teens adapt Shakespeare in their own words. The house was set to open in 10 minutes at Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side last week. To prepare for the dress rehearsal audience of school children, the actors were given a playful warning: “No ‘whoop ass,’ ‘dead ass,’ ‘stupid ass,’” Modesto “Flako” Jimenez, the director, reminded them. The creative terms weren’t the problem. In fact, Jimenez encouraged the innovative language. “If I can teach these kids Shakespeare, they won’t have issues of being weird,” said Jimenez, a Brooklyn actor and poet who started studying Shakespeare when he was around their age, and went on to start a theater company. “I explain to them that Shakespeare was just another poor man, and through the years he got glorified as his class status went up. And letting them know he made up most of his words … he was speaking different ebonics from the time. And they’re like, ‘Oh word? OK, so I can say this?’” During the show, Jimenez fist pumped as Jasmeen Vargas nailed her adaptation of Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy, during which she committed to do whatever necessary to make her husband the king. “I had this picture of

her as evil, but she’s really not,” said Vargas, 16, after the performance. “She wants what’s best for her husband. I translated Shakespeare’s words to make them my own. I thought she was demanding, worried, giving advice. She’s a very strong character,” Vargas said. In the show, the students trade fair Verona for Tompkins Square Park, and the Thane of Cawdor for the Thane of Alphabet City. Some translations included: “I hate the word as much as I hate no Wi-Fi” and “Losing a hot guy is a hard as losing a phone.” This summer Jimenez has taught two free Shakespeare workshops, one on the Lower East Side and the other at the Williamsburg Library. Jimenez says that he funds the library program through his organization, Brooklyn Gypsies Collective, which partnered with Brooklyn Poets, where he is vice president of the board of directors, and Spaceworks for the rehearsal space. “I started this because Brooklyn needs it,” Jimenez said. Former pitchman to plead guilty to child pornography charges Fogle. He became a Subway spokesman after losing 245 pounds in part by eating regularly at the chain. Jared Fogle / GETTY IMAGES

Former Subway sandwich chain pitchman Jared Fogle is expected to plead guilty to charges of possessing child pornography, Indianapolis TV station Fox59 reported on Tuesday.

Fogle will accept a plea deal, the station reported, citing sources. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will hold a news conference on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the

deal and charges against Fogle, the station said. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis declined to comment and Fogle’s attorney could not immediately be reached. In July, authorities conducted a daylong search inside Fogle’s Indiana home, two months after the executive director of Fogle’s foundation was arrested on federal child pornography charges. Subway suspended its relationship with Fogle after the raid. REUTERS

The data was posted onto the dark web, meaning it is only accessible using a specialized browser, although lists of email addresses have since sprouted up on other sites. A group calling itself Impact Team had leaked snippets of the compromised data in July and threatened to publish names and salacious details about clients unless Ashley Madison

and EstablishedMen. com, another site owned by Toronto-based parent company Avid Life Media, were taken down. Tech website Wired said 9.7 gigabytes of data was posted, and appeared to include member account and credit card details. “Avid Life Media has failed to take down Ashley Madison and Established Men,” Wired quoted Impact Team as saying in a statement accompanying the online dump. Democratic Senator Menendez announces opposition to Iran deal Revise. He urged the Obama administration to go back to negotiating to rework the deal. Sen. Robert Menendez issued a scathing critique of the U.S.-led international nuclear deal with Iran on Tuesday and became the second senior lawmaker from President Barack Obama’s own party to announce he would vote to kill the pact with Tehran. Defying Obama and many other fellow Democrats, Menendez said in a speech in his home state of New Jersey: “I will vote

to disapprove the agreement and, if called upon, would vote to override a veto” by the president. The Senate and House of Representatives have to vote by Sept. 17 on a “resolution of disapproval” being brought by majority Republicans aiming to sink the deal. Obama is trying to gather enough support among Democrats to sustain a veto of the resolution. Under the agreement between six major powers and Iran, new curbs would be imposed on Tehran’s nuclear program in return for easing sanctions. Iran denies it wants to make a nuclear weapon. Earlier this month, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the third-

Democratic leader Harry Reid will declare his position when the Senate returns from recess Sept. 7, when lobbying and debate over the deal is expected to intensify. REUTERS

Congressman pleads not guilty to corruption charges Congressman Chaka Fattah pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to federal corruption charges related to the financing of his failed campaign in 2007 for mayor of Philadelphia. The Democratic congressman, who has served in Congress since 1995, was arraigned on

more than two dozen counts of racketeering, fraud, bribery, conspiracy, money laundering and falsification of records in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. He pleaded not guilty before U.S. Magistrate Timothy Rice. The charges largely stem from his efforts to conceal and pay back an illegal $1 million loan from an unidentified Virginia businessman for his mayoral campaign, federal

prosecutors said. The congressman used money from federal grants and donations to help pay back the loan, according to federal prosecutors. Other charges stem from his alleged use of campaign funds to pay off student loans for his son, while the bribery charges stem from Fattah’s efforts to promote an aide, Herbert Vederman, for an ambassadorship or seat on the U.S. Trade Commission, they said. Republican Scott Walker proposes health tax credits by age, not income

Republican presidential contender Scott Walker on Tuesday unveiled his health care plan: Repeal Obamacare and replace it with age-based tax credits that Americans could use to oset the cost of purchasing their own coverage. Under his plan, the Wisconsin governor said he would give up to $3,000 directly to taxpayers to buy health insurance. The amount would range from $3,000 in credits for those age 50 to 64 and scale down to $900 for those age 17 and under, and go to those without health insur-

ance from their jobs. Walker also backed longstanding Republican health proposals to allow consumers to purchase insurance out of state, loosen restrictions on health savings accounts and reform medical malpractice lawsuits. “This gives them a way to get an aordable health care plan,â€? he said in a speech in Minnesota, highlighting the plan’s tax credits. Republicans have long vowed to repeal President Barack Obama’s signature 2010 health care law, commonly known as Obamacare. While most of the 17 Republican presidential candidates have echoed that pledge, few have oered detailed alternatives. REUTERS

Philadelphia archdiocese cancels LGBT program ahead of pope

Police in San Antonio have arrested a resident they describe as a “smooth-talking man” who preyed on college women who were financially vulnerable, convincing dozens of them to be part of his prostitution business. Steven Sumlin was arrested at his home in San Antonio on Monday and charged with felony aggravated promotion of prostitution. Sumlin is suspected of going to college campuses in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, and telling women they could make hundreds or thousands of dollars doing unspecified jobs in his business. REUTERS

Twitter said it plans to accelerate its push for content partnerships in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. It has appointed a Singapore-based executive, Rishi Jaitly, to boost teams in major markets such as Australia, India, and Japan as well as to expand into Greater China and Southeast Asia, the company said in a statement. Jaitly was previously Twitter’s market director for India and Southeast Asia. Twitter has been aggressively expanding its capabilities to carry pictures, video and interactive content.

The Philadelphia Archdiocese has ordered a local parish hosting events for gay and transgender Catholics during Pope Francis’ visit next month to cancel the program. Workshops and other discussions around lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues were scheduled to be held at St. John the Evangelist Church. Pope Francis will attend a summit on families being held in the city, and LGBT Catholic groups have asked for an official presence at the gatherings to express their view that gays and lesbians should be more included in the Church.

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell got good news Tuesday night after tweeting that her 17-year-old daughter Chelsea went missing August 11: She has been found and is safe. Rosie O’Donnell’s teenage daughter, at the center of a reported custody dispute, went missing from her home in suburban New York, the actress said on her website earlier on Tuesday. The teen, who left home with her therapy dog, a tiny brown and black terrier, stopped taking her medication. “Chelsea, like mil-

Currency. Developers split over bitcoin’s future as rivals emerge A power struggle over the future of bitcoin is dividing its lead developers, provoking a fierce debate over whether the digital currency’s software should be tweaked to allow for more and speedier transactions. Bitcoin, a web-based “cryptocurrency, provides a vehicle for moving money across the world quickly and anonymously without the need for thirdparty verification. That has made it attractive to all sorts of users, from drug dealers to Greeks trying to get around capital controls. On Saturday, a rival version of the current software was released by two bitcoin big guns: Gavin Andresen, who was chosen by the currency’s elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, as his successor when he stepped aside in 2011, and Mike Hearn, who along with Andresen is one of five senior developers. For months Andresen and Hearn have been locked in an argument

with the other three lead programmers over whether the “blocks in which bitcoin transactions are processed should be enlarged from their cur-

rent 1 megabyte, so as to enable more than three payments to be processed per second. The new version, which calls itself Bitcoin XT, would increase the block size to 8 megabytes, which would allow up to 24 transactions to be processed every second. That is still a fraction of the 20,000 or so that VISA can process, but would increase every year, so that bitcoin could continue to grow. REUTERS

It’s hard to get back out there after your ex-partner goes on a giant bender and starts hooking up with randos, but Kourtney Kardashian is trying to take on the dating scene again. A “source close to” Kourtney very kindly shared this news with Radar Online, saying she “is devoted to getting her body in rocking shape.” Jeez, you didn’t need to imply she was fat, anonymous Kourtney friend. Oh, and if you’re wondering what it takes to win her eye, she is reportedly looking for a “man that has children of his own” who “doesn’t drink” and who is “older than her and independently wealthy.” Rich old dudes, it’s finally your time to shine! Emile Hirsch got a two-week jail sentence for choking a woman

2 3

Back at Sundance in January, actor Emile Hirsch was arrested for choking Paramount Digital VP Daniele Bernfeld at a nightclub in Park City. Sentencing has now come through for the actor, who pled guilty to avoid a stronger sentence. He got a 15-day jail sentence, a $4,750 fine and 50 hours of community service. Bernfeld issued a strong statement at the sentencing, saying, in part, “Quite simply, this punishment does not fit the crime. While the Park City Police Department treated me with courtesy and respect, this plea deal meets the bare minimum required to placate the regulations of our legal system. If a violent attack in front of a roomful of witnesses can be labeled a misdemeanor and dismissed, what of women who are assaulted while alone in hallways or bathrooms, or behind the closed doors of their own homes.”

What did you do for your 18th birthday? Did you, perchance, get paid $200,000 to show up at a party? Because that’s just how life is for Kylie Jenner, who got that much money to appear at Beachclub in Quebec, which seems like a random location to host a Jenner. Lest you think that turning 18 is making her change her ways, Page Six reports that “Kylie was escorted to the VIP restroom to change her outfit, but decided it wasn’t up to standard and asked to be taken back to her car by security and then driven 50 to 100 feet to another, evidently more suitable bathroom.” We’re not sure which is worse: rejecting the bathroom or needing to be driven 50 feet.

Shop. Get your camera ready, fashion illustrator Donald Robertson brings his cheeky, high-octane art to New York concept store STORY. Artist and bona fide Instagram star Donald Robertson’s latest venture — a children’s book set in the fashion world — wasn’t his idea. “My wife had had it, says the fashion industry vet, who had previously worked as a creative director at beauty giant Estee Lauder. “She was like, ‘Enough “likes; try to do something that is tangible. I want sales. I don’t want “likes — I want sales.’ The result: “Mitford at the Fashion Zoo, a book based on Robertson’s wildly popular Instagram

posts starring a giraffe who works for a powerful magazine-editor panda, who bears a striking resemblance to Anna Wintour. While the father of five has recently traded the hustle of New York for the palm trees of Los Angeles, he is currently painting the Big Apple in his signature gaffer-tape-covered pop art as the subject of concept store STORY. We caught up with Robertson to find out what he reads to his kids (the real stars of his feed) and

what the Vogue editrix has to say about that cameo. Why a girae? I was just bored at work doodling, and I was imaging what it would be like if you had animal interns. I just like giraffes, they’re cool. I like the shape of their heads. What books do you read to your kids? We are all over the place. But we really like “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!â€? — that one is a classic. I love “Madelineâ€? and “Corduroy.â€? They are books that you can tell were done by painters. Have you gotten feedback from Anna Wintour? No, but the most important thing is that I’ve not heard from her lawyers. So I would say that’s positive feedback — I mean, there’s still time. She inspired a character in the book but I always make her seem cool. I just love

Art is everywhere at STORY. / PROVIDED

how insanely consistent she is. It’s completely flattering. What’s the most fun thing at STORY? The most awesome thing about this collaboration is the high/lowness of it. So it’s everything from coast-

ers and mugs — which I never thought I’d do — to Rolex watches and surfboards. There’s very much a community feeling in Rachel [Shechtman’s] store, and it’s really important to her that we had stuff that everyone could afford.

Artist Donald Robertson has taken over the ever-changing concept story STORY and created 25 exclusive merchandise collaborations with brands such as Warby Parker, UrbanEars, Rolex, J. Crew and Bow and Drape. 144 10th Ave. Through Friday, Sept. 18

WHY EVERYONE IS SO EXCITED FOR At Disney’s D23 Expo this past weekend, we saw some amazing things. The new footage from Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.” The announcement of “Gigantic,” the upcoming Disney animated film that will reimagine “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Some gorgeous footage

from the live-action/CGI version of “The Jungle Book.” What I heard people talking about even more on the floor of the convention, however, was “Moana” and how excited they were for the Pacific Island princess. If you’ve been online lately, you may have seen fan art for a princess

about representation. It’s not just having a princess who isn’t white, because we’ve had a number of those. It’s giving her and the culture you’re representing the honor and

research it deserves. This weekend I got to talk to “Moana” directors Ron Clements and John Musker and producer Osnat Shurer about the film. Musker explained

the film thusly: “It’s a story set in the South Pacific 2,000 years ago. It’s a coming-of-age story which features a very strong-willed female protagonist.” Clements

DISNEY’S ‘MOANA’ added that the name Moana means “Ocean and said that she’s got a strong connection to the ocean and her ancestors, and “she dreams of bringing back the days of the great voyaging. Shurer added, “And, dare I say, she is badass. When I asked what made her different from other Disney princesses, Shurer said, “She’s out to bring back the culture of her people. She’s strong, she’s determined, she’s full of heart. Even better? Musker said that this is not a romance. It’s a comingof-age story. Look, I love a good love story, but it’s refreshing to hear that not every Disney princess has to be in love. Musker said that this is a hero’s journey, a la Joseph Campbell, and that she is, indeed, a hero to her people. They did a lot of research all over the South Pacific, including Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Huahine and Moorea, and “talked to

people who are really connected to the older roots of the culture. Not the tourist parts, Musker said. “We saw a whole different part of the culture. Shearer said that not only have these people become friends but they checked their story ideas with them regularly. Clements added, “We want this film to be truthful in terms of what we learned from our experiences out there and the people we met. He said the trips were transformative in ways they didn’t expect. It’s wonderful to hear about something like this being taken seriously. Anyone else a little weary of adorable blondes doing things adorably and accidentally adorably saving a kingdom? It sounds like we’re going to get a strong, heroic lead with a story that actually respects a culture. “Moana will hit theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.

Alton Brown is on “Camp Cutthroat,” Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on the Food Network. / FOOD NETWORK

Working vacation Reality TV. “Camp Cutthroat” is in session, with our favorite sadistic chef as counselor. As a fellow straphanger when he visits NYC, “Cutthroat Kitchen” host Alton Brown knows every trip could turn into a Cutthroat Commute. In this, cooking and commuting are not so different. “So many people who watch ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’ don’t necessarily get that the most fun part of it is watching the adaptability of human beings,” he says. “It’s not about doing horrible things to one another.” This summer, Brown took his show outdoors — something he’s very familiar with — in “Camp Cutthroat,” with sabotages like cooking on a rock wall and something called “capture the cheese.” One more thing

Do you ever have the urge to help a contestant? Every day. Professional kitchens are run on helping each other, gotta have each other’s back, so it’s built into us that when one person flounders, you simply help and move on, and when you can’t do that, it’ll drive you crazy, and it does.

We talked to Brown about the value of camping and hacking his kitchen tools — in elementary school. You were prepared for “Camp Cutthroat” — you used to be a Boy Scout. I was a scout up to Star Scout! When I was a kid growing up mostly in the ’70s in a relatively remote part of the U.S., scouting was a way of life. We learned a lot about self-reliance, which I worry that our kids aren’t learning today. I certainly started developing a love of cooking in the Scouts, and the little travel pots and pans and things, I kept mine in perfect order and hacked some of it and made changes on it to make it more useful. When did that start? I started as a Cub Scout in third grade, and by the time I moved into those awkward GETTY IMAGES

Webelo years I was already bending things; I made an adaptation to one of my pots so the handle could be screwed on to a walking stick so you could set it up in the fire better. I took some metal tent parts to make a little tripod to dangle a pot over a campfire. What tools do you take with you into the woods? For regular camping, stuff that I always have with me is a cast-iron Dutch oven that I camp with and bake biscuits in. I’m a huge fan of heavy-duty aluminum foil, and I have a very nice camp shovel that I’ve turned into kind of a multi-tool for various things when cooking. And gosh darn it a big ol’ Swiss army knife because you still can’t beat it. Was the show your idea? I don’t remember who first said “Camp Cutthroat,” but I remember that the second it came out I was like, “Oh my gosh, I spent so much time outdoors as a kid.” You immediately have these emotional and nostalgic associations of what that means, what it’s gonna look like, and I immediately said, “Oh, we should make that look like the movie ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’” with this very nostalgic Boy Scout feel and create this world that people either remember or wish they remembered. We literally wrote everything we needed for the five-show run in a one-hour brainstorming session, it was so rich with possibilities. EVA KIS @thisiskis

More buyers bid on (and win) apartments that they don’t want, robbing sellers of their crucial debut period. Call it a buyer’s security blanket. Frustrated by a lack of inventory on the market in Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, and, perhaps, burned by one-too-many losses, some buyers are bidding on apartments that they’re not sure they even want. The idea: win now, decide later. It’s not until an offer is actually accepted that these buyers are taking a good, hard look at the fought-over property. At that point, some are deciding that the home is not a good fit for them, while others are getting scared off by the very fact that they’ve won a bidding war and might be overpaying. “Essentially, would-be purchasers are buying time instead of the apartment,” said Warburg Realty’s Lisa Larson. While this is not a new phenomenon — New

York has especially lax rules surrounding making offers on properties — brokers say they have seen an increase in the last few months because inventory is so tight and so much of the new product coming online is high-end luxury with hefty price tags. Larson recently represented the seller of an Upper East Side threebedroom in the $2 million range. Sixty prospective buyers saw it within the first week, and eight submitted bids. But the winning couple backed out five days into the duediligence period when the two could not agree on whether they both wanted the apartment. While this may seem like an innocent strategy to buyers who are simply trying to find a home in a tight marketplace, it can be seriously detrimental to a seller. That’s because, as Larson explained, a failed deal can cast a shadow on the property. “You’re losing that important first week or two on the market when you have momentum building,” she said. “When that’s gone, it’s hard to get it back.” E.B. Mangold the incumbent majesty of mane on Jets NFL. Nick Mangold respects the effort his quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, puts in.

Nick Mangold’s throne is being challenged by none other than Ryan Fitzpatrick as the two New York Jets vie for who has the best beard in the locker room. For years, Mangold has had the quintessential beard on his team, the Jets Pro Bowl center being virtually unrivaled among his teammates for having the best crumb duster perhaps in franchise history. But this past offseason, the Jets acquired Ryan Fitzpatrick, who as a quarterback defies conventional norms with his own beard. There is no animosity between the two, so says Mangold about his bearded brethren of a teammate. The two have different styles of beards, but that doesn’t get in the way of their mutual respect and admiration for their shared sporting of a chin curtain. “I think he does a very commendable job,” Mangold told Metro. “I’ve had a few people come

SPORTS

up to me and ask if I feel threatened or rivaled. As a fellow beard man, I have an appreciation for it. I never feel threatened or jealous of it, you just appreciate it, I’m not concerned. You can tell he has a fantastic one. “You can tell he puts time into it. I’m more of the live-and-let-live, he is more of a trimming and maintaining type, but

it is still full and really rather lovely.” It is, of course, not a novelty to see an offensive lineman such as Mangold with some lip foliage on display. There is just something about a hulking lineman and his beard that seems to go hand in hand. But quarterbacks typically are clean-shaven and obsessive about public image. That’s what makes

Fitzpatrick with his lip sweater so unusual. And worthy of Mangold’s respect. “He’s committed to it, which is good to see,” Mangold said. “Especially with all the distractions in this world, it is good to see that he is fully on board with something so vitally important as one’s beard because, let’s be honest, a beard is up

there in terms of life’s important things.” The two have talked about their beards, Mangold said, and have swapped grooming tips and insight. He said he found the conversation “informative and full of joy.” KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

The Royals have won eight of their last 10. Both their pitching and hitting have been clicking of late and they have a plus-77 run differential.

After winning nine straight, the Cubs finally dropped one. Right now it looks like the NL Central could produce three playoff teams.

The Yankees were cooled off by the Jays on Sunday, but New York still leads the AL East by a game. Mark Teixeira now has 31 homers on the year.

Their best chance at making the postseason might be winning the division as the Cubs and Pirates seem to be running away with the Wild Card.

A “significant gap” remains between the Giants and Manning’s camp in negotiations for a new contract, according to the report. Manning will make $17 million this season, which is the last on his current deal. Aaron Rodgers is the highest-paid QB in the league as he makes $22 million in average annual value.

Center fielder Andrew McCutchen’s 77 RBIs are tied for fourth-most in the NL. The Pirates have won seven of their last 10.

Winners of three straight, the Dodgers have opened up a three-game lead in the NL West. Adrian Gonzalez has 73 RBIs this year.

After making some big moves at the deadline, Rogers Centre has been sold out. The Jays lead the AL Wild Card race.

The Astros haven’t played too well of late, but it’s been good enough to stay atop the AL West standings.
