Half suit, half jersey, all class. / SUISEY FANWEAR

Suisey Fanwear makes sports loyalty fashionable Boston Web celeb. Zach Etkind’s suisey is half jersey, half suit, all class. He first sported a suisey while pretending to be a journalist who sneaked into the ring after a Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios fight at the world’s largest casino in Macau, China. Zach Etkind became a Boston/Shanghai-based Web celeb with his “Donnie Does China” YouTube series, which follows the travels of a footloose, self-described Masshole as he navigates his way through China with his pet duck and his Larry Bird jersey. But sometimes, a Celtics

top isn’t going to cut it for a dress code. “I was going to the Pacquiao fight and needed something more classy than a Bird jersey,” Etkind said. “We knew we were going to shoot an episode there, so we decided to make a bright green suisey with Bird and 33 printed on the back. We didn’t plan on making too many of them, but people kept asking where they could get one.” Thus, Suisey Fanwear was born, combining the spirit of sports fanaticism with sharp-looking suits. They are exactly what their slogan says: Half jersey. Half suit. All class. One might think that any idiot could have come up with the idea of slapping a name and number on the

back of a suit jacket, but Etkind and Rob Wallace won the 2014 Paul and Elizabeth Montle Prize for Entrepreneurial Achievement at Tufts University for their blueprint pitch of Suisey Fanwear. That’s a $10,000 prize to kick off their project. “There were two winners of this business plan competition that year,” Etkind said. “One was a project that helped adults on the autism

spectrum improve their speaking skills for jobs and college applications, and then there’s two dudes making suit jerseys. I’m glad they saw something in us.” So far, they have deals in the works with Clemson and the University of South Carolina, hoping to start selling their creations this football season. “We aren’t officially licensed by any of the professional leagues yet,” Etkind said. “Getting that done is a lengthy process, but we’re certain we have something here.” The NFL requires product pitches to come with a $100,000 licensing fee, which is quite a hurdle. In the meantime, Etkind and Wallace have their sights set on Southern colleges where

football is a religion, and fully customized, made-to-order suits that don’t have official logos on them. “We’re making customized ones, where customers can choose their color scheme, name and number, but no licensed logos,” Etkind said. Suiseys go for about $139$179, depending on design. The idea isn’t limited to sports teams. Etkind said they aim to make a whole line for fraternities and sororities, bands, movies and TV shows. “It started out as a sportsoriented idea,” Etkind said, “but it seems like the sky’s the limit.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS nathan.homan@metro.us

Wild cards. No gun permits, criminal records for alleged ‘gunmen’ Neither one of the two men who authorities said planned a massacre at last weekend’s Pokemon World Championships have criminal records nor permits for the weapons they are charged with transporting from Iowa, according to published reports. James Stumbo, 27, of Boone, only has minor traffic offenses on his record in the nearby central Iowa counties, the Ames Tribune reported.

Last year, Kevin Norton, 18, was taken from his Ames home to a local medical center following a domestic disturbance, but because he was a minor, the details are not public, according to the Tribune. The Boone County chief deputy told the paper that Stumbo did not have a gun permit issued from Boone County. The Story County sheriff

said that Norton does not have a permit either. Authorities say Stumbo and Norton were detained after they reportedly made threatening social media posts, including a photo from Stumbo’s Facebook account of Norton’s 2002 Chevy Prizm with an NRA sticker on the trunk, where an AR-15 and a 12-gauge shotgun lay across each other in an “X” shape.

The caption reads: “Kevin Norton and I are ready for worlds Boston here we come!!!” In the comments section under the picture, a friend wished them luck. Norton replied, “with killing the competition?” Stumbo and Norton are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 1 for a dangerousness hearing. They are currently being held without bail. NATE HOMAN

Government Center’s got a pain in the glass T stop. The contractor will pay to replace 358 glass panels that showed signs of leaks. An issue with glass at the inconstruction Government Center T stop is nothing to worry about, officials said this week. The glass on the big structure in the plaza, called a “headhouse,” will need to be replaced after showing signs of fogging, MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola said at a Monday board meeting, according to reports. That means moisture is getting between the building’s doublepanes. The city won’t have to pay for the replacement — the contractor for the project, Barletta Heavy Division, will, according to MassDOT spokesman Michael Verseckes. “The glass windows delivered to Government Center for

the station reconstruction project have arrived with a sealant to keep moisture out of double paned glass that failed,” Verseckes told Metro via email. “It appears to be a manufacturing issue and as such the T will not be responsible for the cost of replacement.” It also won’t delay the sta-

tion’s opening, planned for spring 2016, Verseckes said. All 358 glass panels will need to be replaced — anywhere between 50 and 100 at a time, he said. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Internet via airwaves? Startup thinks it could be the future of broadband Local startup netBlazr is challenging Comcast and the status quo, pitching Internetvia-radio-signal service as a way to get cheap broadband and bypassing cable companies. The MassChallenge alum’s equipment sends targeted Internet signals around the city via hundreds of rooftop transponders. They’re making a big push this year, signing contracts with a dozen new apartment buildings and recently securing $1 million in funding. So is netBlazr’s big provider-bypassing business model a middle finger to Comcast? “Sure,” said CEO Jim Hanley, who criticized the communications giant’s customer service and called it “the most hated company in America.” Venting sessions with new netBlazr customers, and in comments online, tell all, Hanley said. “People call in basically foaming at the mouth about the big monopoly,” Hanley said. “It makes us laugh, but it tells us there really is a market there for what we’re doing.” A representative for Comcast said the company has been working to improve customer service — updating a support app, for example. He also pointed out Comcast’s extra features like mobile hotspots in the city and said the company offers the fastest broadband available. And Comcast does also have competition from RCN (which doesn’t cover all of the city), Verizon and Internet via satellite. But for many in the city faced with just one viable option for Internet, the “monopoly” image sticks. That’s where netBlazr comes in as the first Boston startup to capitalize in a big way on wireless ISP. NetBlazr’s signals bounce

around the city via hundreds of antennas and dishes attached to rooftops, which means they don’t have to run cable through the ground and inside buildings to access customers. “It’s a lot easier to maneuver Boston hopping on rooftops than pulling up cobblestone streets,” Hanley said. As long as nothing gets in the way — trees, other buildings — the signals work in much the same way satellite dishes do. Hanley said they offer speeds up to 300 megabits per second. He said the bigger telecom companies haven’t made a fuss about them just yet, adding that his business model is fundamentally different. NetBlazr, he said, can really only offer one service, while Comcast and RCN can sell bundled packages of Internet, cable and phone. NetBlazr has fewer than 1,000 customers, Hanley said. But Hanley told Metro he believes his company could take 5-10 percent of the Bos-

ton market for broadband. “We’re still small and we represent maybe a rounding error for these guys in the marketplace,” he said. “But we can provide real choice and the consumers are screaming for this.” Working in netBlazr’s favor right now: cord-cutting, the buzzy term for young people who don’t buy cable TV and instead stream movies on Netflix or watch shows on demand using services like Hulu. The biggest market shift, though, is the way new technology could make it less necessary to rely on legacy companies for access to the Web, said Daniel Lyons, associate professor of law at Boston College specializing in telecommunications. Wireless, he said, could be the “disruptive force of the future that will eventually break the existing mold. “The technology is on the march,” he said. “Eventually, technology will solve the problem. The question is: when?” SPENCER BUELL

Islamic State militants published photos on Tuesday purporting to show the destruction of a Roman-era temple in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, an act the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO has called a war crime. Syria’s antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters the images did appear to show the destruction of the ancient Baal Shamin temple and correlated with descriptions given by residents of the explosion detonated there on Sunday. Five photos were distributed on social media showing explosives being carried inside, being planted around the walls of the temple, a large blast and then rubble. The blast photo shows a huge cloud of gray smoke soaring above the temple, with ancient columns in the foreground. Reuters could not independently verify the pictures. Activists say Islamic State, also known as ISIS, is tightly controlling communications in the central desert city.

“It stood as it was for more than 1,800 years. ... It was a beautiful tourist attraction.” Abdulkarim, antiquities chief, said by telephone

UNESCO has described the temple and Palmyra’s surrounding sites as symbols of Syria’s historical cultural diversity, which it says ISIS is seeking to obliterate. Abdulkarim said last week the group had beheaded Khaled al-Asaad, the 82-year-old Syrian archaeologist who had looked after Palmyra’s ruins for four decades, and hung his body in public. Islamic State has proclaimed a caliphate to rule over all Muslims from territory it holds in both Syria and Iraq. It has a history of carrying out mass killings in places it captures and of demolishing monuments it says are pagan and idolatrous. REUTERS

the Apple iPhone’s most popular defining features, of which makers of rival Android-based phones have developed their own versions. In a statement, the appeals court said it confirmed a ruling by the lower Federal Patent Court that canceled Apple’s German patent, based on the technique’s similarity to a phone released by Swedish company Neonode Inc. a year before the iPhone’s 2007 launch. Amazon Prime, the company’s $99 per year shopping membership program, offers free two-day delivery on millions of items. It is a key testing ground for the retailer’s new services, ranging from TV and on-demand video to fast

delivery. Amazon has said it has “tens of millions” of Prime subscribers. Analysts estimate the program to have around 40 million users worldwide. The company has steadily expanded Prime Now since it launched the service in New York City last year. It facilitates integration of the retailer’s grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh, which has been slower to

expand to new markets. On-demand grocery delivery is a growing and competitive market in the United States. Instacart, a grocery delivery company, announced on Tuesday that it had expanded to Indianapolis, its 17th city. Maryland sets first US state profiling guidelines for police

amid a national and local debate about police treatment of minorities. One of the most prominent cases was the death of a black man in Baltimore in April from an injury while in police custody, which sparked protests and rioting. Six Baltimore officers have been charged in the case. “We believe we can improve the administration of justice. Experience shows us that improper profiling by police does terrible damage,” Frosh, a Democrat who took office in January, told a news conference. U.S. authorities on Tuesday announced the arrest of the chief executive officer and six employees of Rentboy.com, which prosecutors described as the largest online male escort service. Rentboy.com CEO Jeffrey Hurant and the employees were charged in a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, with conspiring to violate the Travel Act by promoting prostitution. The defendants, all New York residents, were arrested Tuesday. Their lawyers could not be immediately identified.

US, Mexico to open first new rail link in over a century

Ashley Madison, parent company sued in US over hack

The United States and Mexico, which have nearly $600 billion in annual trade, will launch on Tuesday the first new rail link between the two countries in more than a century, in the Texas border city of Brownsville. The West Rail Bypass International Bridge will connect Brownsville with Matamoros, its neighboring city across the border, and will carry freight between the two countries, the U.S. Commerce Department said. There are currently eight rail crossings between the U.S. and Mexico, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Ashley Madison and its parent company have been sued in federal court in California by a man who claims that the companies failed to adequately protect clients’ personal and financial information from theft, saying he suffered emotional distress. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by a man identified as John Doe, seeks classaction status. The lawsuit accuses Ashley Madison and parent company Avid Life Media of negligence and invasion of privacy, as well as causing emotional distress.

A strong rally on Wall Street evaporated on Tuesday and stocks ended with deep losses as concerns about China’s economy outweighed lower valuations that some saw earlier as bargains. In a dramatic trading session, major indices turned negative in the final minutes of trading after previously climbing almost 3 percent. Investors cited more worries that a slowdown in China could hobble global growth, even after the country’s central

bank cut interest rates on Tuesday for the second time in two months. The move came after Chinese stocks slumped 8 percent on Tuesday, on top of an 8.5 percent drop on Monday. “People are still nervous about overseas and what might happen tonight. Nobody wants to sit around and see what happens,” said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago. Tuesday’s drop followed steeper losses on Monday, when the Dow Jones industrial

average fell more than 1,000 points at its lows and the S&P 500 recorded its worst day since 2011. In the past week, the S&P has lost 11 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 204.91 points, or 1.29 percent, to end at 15,666.44. @Sethrogen: Cool Runnings holds up like a motherf—er.

This certainly won’t make dinners at the Kardashian house any less awkward. Rapper Tyga dropped a new track off his upcoming album yesterday called “Stimulated,” and while the steamy lyrics never mention his newly 18-year-old girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, by name, the evidence is pretty damning — and squirm-inducing. “They say she is young, I shoulda waited. She a big girl, dawg, when she stimulated,” he raps. “She a big girl dawg, I’m puttin’ in. Yeah I’m penetrating.” That’s just lovely, isn’t it? And, unsurprisingly, Jenner’s family is totally not jazzed. “This is just so disgusting that the Kardashian family cannot even believe Tyga went there,” a source tells Radar Online. “He was doing so well and getting along great with Kylie’s sisters and parents, and now he just lost huge brownie points because he completely disrespected her. Tyga knows not to discuss Kylie with anyone, and then he goes and writes a song about having sex with her. It is just absolutely repulsive.” That’s one word for it.

Us Weekly reports that Brie officially told the world she was set to tie the knot during the premiere of her newest movie, while Franco told his pals at a sushi restaurant (the traditional place to reveal engagement news). “He ran into some people he knew,

Emma Roberts and ex-fiance dining out

and they were congratulating him on his engagement,” a source says. Here’s to the happy — if vertically challenged — couple! MATT LEE

‘The Karate Kid’: Daniel is the REAL Bully So apparently we’ve got some 1980s movie classics all wrong. It turns out “The Karate Kid” is actually the story of “a violent sociopath who moves to a small California town and starts tormenting a boy and his friends.” While

Johnny (William Zabka) has traditionally been seen as the villain of the film, this video posits that he’s actually just trying to protect himself and the community from the loose-canon new arrival, Daniel (Ralph Macchio). “There is no telling what further damage this unbalanced and violent individual will do.” Obviously this narrator hasn’t seen any of the sequels.

Speaking of engagements, Emma Roberts and her “American Horror Story” co-star and ex-fiance, Evan Peters, were spotted having dinner together in West Hollywood recently, looking awfully chummy for a pair that broke off their engagement two months ago. The onagain, off-again couple are no strangers to relationship drama — there was that whole domestic disturbance in a Montreal hotel episode that

left Peters bruised and Roberts in handcuffs — but their breakup this summer was supposedly pretty easy. “Their three years together just ran its course. They have so many great memories together but couldn’t make it work in the end,” a source told Just Jared at the time. “The breakup was amicable. There was no drama whatsoever. Emma and Evan are even still friends.” So maybe this was just a friendly dinner?

How Justin Bieber made a comeback Career study. He was the pop star everyone loved to hate. But now he’s won back his fans’ hearts. We explain the method behind his madness. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when Justin Bieber went from being the sweet pop star with the perfect hair to Most Hated Celebrity. Maybe it was back in 2011 when he started flipping off photographers. Or 2013 when he was caught on camera peeing in a mop bucket at a restaurant; later that year he was caught with a prostitute in Brazil. Whatever the tipping point was, he became a joke. But this summer something changed. He just headlined Billboard’s Hot 100 Music Festival, his new single is getting crazy buzz and, most importantly, people have stopped talking smack about him. Well, mostly. Here’s how he managed to get back on top:

1

He recognizes the power of Ellen. Bieber has been a regular on “The Ellen Degeneres Show since his “Baby days. In February, he went on the show and publicly apologized for his outrageous behavior. Then he went back on the

‘Jauja’ With “The Lord of the Rings, Viggo Mortensen went from respected character actor to god. It’s a position he’s used wisely. Rather than simply becoming a megastar in anonymous blockbusters, he likes to lend his name (and considerable acting prowess) to projects that interest him, not the world’s fanboys. “Jauja, an Argentine mega-art film released earlier this year, is not for everyone, but for the adventurous moviegoer it’s catnip. Mortensen plays a Danish captain in the 1880s who gets seriously lost in the Argentine wild while searching for his daughter, who has run off with a rugged lieutenant. There’s little hope he’ll ever find her — or ever find his way back to civilization. Then things turn even weirder, especially as the final stretch looms. Director Lisandro Alonso (“Liverpool, “Los Muertos) is firmly of the master shot/long-take school. He transforms landscapes into near-psychedelic realms of the mind. Mortensen’s

It’s a seller’s market again this fall Inventory issues will keep buyers at a disadvantage in the city in the autumn. CAROLINE MACNEILLE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Looking to buy in Boston this fall? Better get ready for a fight. Residential inventory in the city is increasingly scarce, and buyers are facing pressure to buy in a hurry. Pointing to recent reports by the Federal Reserve, Michael DiMella, a managing

partner at Charlesgate Realty, says, “We’re in the midst of a very active market. There’s certainly an overwhelming demand. Buyers are now expecting interest rates to rise, so that may be putting more pressure on them to act now.” RE/MAX realtor Candice Macoul agrees. “We’re going to continue with high demand and low inventory. We’ll keep seeing bidding wars and properties going for well over asking price.” Both agree that there hasn’t been a huge change in the market since last year, but demand in certain neighborhoods is rising. “There is much

13

New properties But what about all those new buildings popping up? Macoul says they haven’t had as much effect as you might expect. “I certainly expected it to have impacted the market,” she says. “There are so many apartments and, at their prices, it surprised me that they are renting as well as they are. Now it is helping the small investor. Existing properties have had to up their game to compete with the new buildings. They’ve had to improve in Charlestown [and] Beacon Hill and update kitchens and baths to compete. They’ve had to add value and make them far more competitive with these other buildings.”

If you do make the move to Brighton, don’t forget to bring a bike with you. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

more activity in East Boston and neighborhoods like Brighton that were not necessarily as hot last year,” Macoul says. DiMella also mentioned Brighton as an emerging market. “Brighton is extremely strong right now. For the high end, the Seaport is strong and we’re seeing a lot of new projects there. We’re also seeing South Boston, which has been

growing rapidly for the past few years, but Brighton has been a really strong market for the city.” What is fueling the Brighton market? “There’s a lot of development in the for-rent area, and in industry too, with businesses like New Balance and Harvard University,” explains DiMella. He cites Brighton as a solid

midmarket opportunity for buyers who can’t afford the steep downtown prices, while mentioning the Millennium Tower and Four Seasons as high-end condo options. “We’re starting to see some more inventory on the for-sale side of the condo market. That’s definitely something I see going forward to add a little bit more inventory,

but certainly nowhere near enough to meet the demand out there.” The surplus of buyers is keeping the rental market competitive as well. Macoul mentioned the scramble to buy is causing would-be buyers to continue renting. “We have a lot more buyers with very few properties. Therefore, they have to rent.”

Sox with plenty of work to do on pen this winter MLB. Koji Uehara may be transformed into a setup man. When it comes to rebuilding the Red Sox for 2016, the area that needs the most work and a complete overhaul isn’t the starting rotation like many believe — it’s actually the bullpen. The Boston bullpen has an ERA of 4.31, which is 26th in baseball. The Sox have scored the third-most runs in all of baseball this year, and while the starting rotation hasn’t been the greatest, it’s been good enough to win games. The biggest problem has been that once the starters leave the game, the bullpen hasn’t been able to hold leads. While injuries — most notably to Koji Uehara — have been part of it, the bullpen needs a complete overhaul. Aside from Uehara and Junichi Tazawa, every member of the bullpen likely won’t be back next season. Names like Robbie Ross Jr., Craig Breslow, Tommy Layne, Jonathan Aro, Heath Hembree, Matt Barnes, Noe Ramirez, Alexi Ogando —– those are all the relievers who haven’t gotten it done this season. The team has

even tapped into their relievers with Triple-A Pawtucket and no one has stepped up to take advantage of the situation. Sunday was a perfect example, as Tazawa has been forced into the closer’s role, one he’s admitted he isn’t comfortable with. Tazawa allowed four ninth-inning runs on six hits, blowing the save in the Red Sox’s 8-6 loss to the Royals. “I think he’s bumped up a role, and as I’ve been saying over the past couple days, we’re going to be patient through the process with a lot of these guys in changing their roles and continue to

give them the ball,” interim manager Torey Lovullo said. “It’s a learning moment for [Tazawa], and I think as we keep moving forward he’s going to be better off from his moment.” Looking ahead to 2016, building around Uehara and Tazawa isn’t a bad place to start, but with Uehara approaching age 40, the team might be better off going after a proven closer in the offseason and turning Uehara into a setup man. He and Tazawa would be a great seventh- and eighth-inning combination. The team could also take a look at Layne as a lefty specialist but he hasn’t been consistent the entire season. So aside from a closer, they will be seeking one or two lefties. Baseball is shifting toward putting more and more focus on bullpens, as evident by the Royals riding their bullpen all the way to the World Series last year. The Red Sox are way behind in that trend. The good thing is that it only takes one offseason to get a bullpen back on track and it should be a major focus for the Red Sox this winter. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

MLB. Announcer Orsillo out as voice of Red Sox Red Sox TV broadcasts will look a lot different next season and not just because new GM Dave Dombrowski is expected to shake up the roster. Popular play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo will not return to Red Sox broadcasts on NESN in 2016 as he will not be offered a new contract. Dave O’Brien, currently the Red Sox’ radio play-by-play man on WEEI and a National announcer on various ESPN

broadcasts, is expected to take over. According to a report by The Boston Globe’s Chad Finn, industry sources say that Orsillo was “never a favorite of Joseph Maar, NESN’s vice president of programming and production, who arrived at the network in July 2012. Orsillo had been the main play-by-play man at NESN since 2001, when he took over for Sean McDonough. MATT BURKE
