Repairs. Five subway cars and two buses were out of service for A/C repair on Tuesday. Riding on a T bus or train without air conditioning on a boiling hot day makes you wonder how people did it back in the pre-A/C days. There’s nothing like riding in a crowded car or bus and watching the sweat pour out of the pores of the rush-hour commuters who try in vain to play it cool as the pit stains grow. With temperatures
expected to hit 92 on Wednesday and then cool off in the mid-80s and high 70s for the rest of the week, T riders are facing at least a bit more potential for sauna-like commutes. “When an A/C issue is discovered or reported, an MBTA inspector is dispatched to the vehicle to attempt to reset the circuit breaker and see if the A/C will reactivate,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in an email. “If that is not successful, the MBTA typically removes the vehicle from service at the end of its current trip. Such issues are immediately entered into the vehicle repair database through the dispatchers’ log system.”
Have an issue? “Every subway car and every bus has a number both inside and outside the vehicle,” Pesaturo said. “Getting that number is key to addressing the issue in an expeditious manner.” •
Call MBTA Customer Service at 617-222-3200
•
Pesaturo said the MBTA also receives reports on its Twitter page.
If you’ve had the misfortune of riding in what might feel like an industrial-size lobster pot, you happen to fall into a minority
category of ridership. As of noon on Tuesday, the T had five individual train cars and two buses headed for repairs due to defunct A/C’s. Those five subway cars (individual cars, not entire trains) and two buses were seven afflicted vehicles out of 488 subway cars and 796 buses. Pesaturo said that on days over 90 degrees, extra staff is deployed at terminus locations, attempting to identify issues before the vehicles go into service. If all goes well, the A/C kicks in when the temperatures climb over 68 degrees. Air conditioning-related complaints have decreased 28 percent from last summer, 211 last year
compared to 151 this year, from June 1 through Tuesday. During this period of time, about 110 million riders have used the MBTA. From June 1 to Sept. 8, the Red Line received 41 of the A/C-related complaints, making it the steamiest of the subway lines. During this period of time, about 17 million riders used the Red Line. But fear not, fellow riders: Air conditioning-related complaints are more common than heat-related complaints, and we are pulling away from the dog days of summer. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

New MassDOT Baby Doe billboards The Massachusetts Department of Transportation unveiled new billboards asking an almost-threemonth-old question: Remember me? Adjacent to the question is the computer rendered image of the 4-year-old girl known to the world as Baby Doe. There are 84 MassDOTpermitted digital billboards — in 50 spots all over Massachusetts — with her image and a picture of the polka-dot pants she wore along with information on the tip line.

Authorities are begging the public to help identify this little girl. She was found in a trash bag on Deer Island on June 25 when a dog walker stumbled across her
remains. She had brown eyes, brown hair, weighed about 30 pounds and was found with a zebra-print fleece blanket. At the time, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said
that investigators did not think she had been there for long. Authorities have conducted pollen tests on her clothes and isotope tests on her teeth and hair,
both of which confirmed that she spent time in the Greater Boston area. Since her discovery, investigators have been flooded with hundreds of leads on possible matches, conducted well-being checks all over the state, as well as 35 other states and in other countries. According to information put out by the state police, officials have ruled out more than 200 girls. So far, her identity and the cause of her death remain an enigma. NATE HOMAN

App. Boston strangers become friends, one Shattr at a time
Zac Carpman, left and Ben Fichter, with their app / DEREK KOUYOUMIJAN, METRO
Building a user base. Meet-up app moving beyond dissing Donald Trump. Shattr made a splash in Boston with a Donald Trump diss (“F---“ him, a tongue-in-cheek promo flier read), but the meet-up app’s founders say they’re leaving that behind. Now, they told Metro, they’re working on making Shattr part of the social lives of Boston’s college kids. The app basically connects groups of friends with other groups of friends for nights out, via a swiping function not unlike the dating app Tinder’s. Like-minded users that “shattr others they meet through the app can then swap messages and pictures, and set up in-reallife hangouts. It’s an idea the app’s founders had while still in college, and it’s catching on, they told Metro via phone call from their Financial District headquarters. “We’ve seen some significant growth, said founder Ben Fichter, 24. “We’ve heard stories from different groups who met other people on the app they didn’t before. It’s really invigorated us. The duo told Metro they’ve used the app themselves, recently meeting up with a crew of nine people at Hong Kong in Harvard Square. “It was nice. All the awkward icebreaking when you’re trying to meet someone for the first time goes away, Fichter said.
“It was instantly fun and everyone was loose and it wasn’t awkward at all. “It was crazy seeing it all come to life before our eyes, said Zac Carpman, Shattr’s 23-year-old cofounder. “It’s just a great way to coordinate. A new Trump-free promo push aimed at building Shattr’s user base begins this weekend, the duo told Metro, when they plan to host a booth at College Fest on Saturday at Fenway Park. They also said they plan to give randomly selected users tickets to see the Boston band Passion Pit, and they’re actively recruiting promoters for the city’s many college campuses. One big fan of Shattr’s already is Lauren McCart, 25 — a friend of the founders who told Metro she and her roommate have been using the app constantly since its “soft launch earlier this summer. It wasn’t clear how many people use the app so far (Carpman and Fichter declined to say), but McCart said on weekend nights she’s had as many as 16 users try to connect — a big help, she said, for a New Jersey native trying to meet locals. “A lot of my friends and I work a lot so we don’t have a lot of time to go out and meet new groups of people, McCart told Metro, adding she’s used the app to meet up with people four times, but posts with it just about every day. “This just kind of makes it more convenient, and it’s fun, too. Pet adoption
MSPCA: ‘We Got Buns, Hun!’ “We Got Buns, Hun!” That’s the new callout from the MSPCA, which is offering fee-waived adoptions for rabbits next week. Didn’t know you can get bunnies at shelters? You’re not alone, said Rob Halpin, director of public relations for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which runs three shelters in the state (in Jamaica Plain, Methuen and Centerville). “People, I think, tend
to believe you have to go to a pet store to buy a rabbit, when in fact you can go to your local adoption center and adopt one,” Halpin said. Bunny adoptions usually cost $75, Halpin said, but the MSPCA is waiving fees Sept. 12-20. Those interested just have to show a reference from a veterinarian and prove that they either own their home or have a landlord’s permission to have a pet. There are 50 rabbits in the MSPCA’s care right now, Halpin said, which is close to capacity for the shelters. SPENCER BUELL

Walsh, superintendent to host back-to-school Twitter chat today Social media. Tweet your questions to #ASKMJW. Boston’s mayor and school superintendent planned to take your back-to-school questions on Twitter on Wednesday. Mayor Marty Walsh and Tommy Chang, the new superintendent of Boston Public Schools, promised to go live for a Q+A Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. Walsh first tweeted about the online meetup Aug. 21. Inquisitive parents or school observers can tweet their questions using hashtag #ASKMJW,
the one Walsh has used in past question-and-answer sessions — the latest in June was full of questions about Boston’s nowdefunct Olympic bid. Before that, Walsh hosted a chat on Earth Day in April. Last year, he hosted an “Ask Me Anything” chat on Reddit. The first questions for this round came in two weeks ago from people wondering whether the timing for the chat was poorly planned. “Respectfully, why aren’t we having this chat to help parents with #backtoschool ???’s BEFORE school starts?” tweeted @MagdalenaVerdad. “Please realize this is exactly when kids get

Kansas jury. Jewish center killer should be executed for his crimes A Kansas jury on Tuesday said a white supremacist who shot three people to death outside two Jewish centers last year should be put to death for the crimes. Frazier Glenn Cross, 74, a former senior member of the Ku Klux Klan who has been representing himself in court, was found guilty last month of killing Reat Underwood, 14, and his grandfather, William Corporon, 69, outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, and Terri LaManno, 53, outside a Jewish retirement home, both in Overland Park, Kansas. The jury also convicted Cross of three counts of attempted murder for shooting at three other people. Cross said during the trial he shot them because he thought they were Jewish but none of those killed were in fact Jewish. Cross, 74, gave a Nazi salute to the jury, and declared “Death to the Jews” at the end of his clos-

Cross, also known as Glenn Miller, said Jews control the media, financial institutions and the movie industry, and he blamed Jewish women for backing a movement that led to the Supreme Court decision in 1973 to legalize abortion. Kentucky clerk in gay marriage case released from jail
Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, walked out of jail on Tuesday after the U.S. district court judge who found her in contempt said he was satisfied licenses were being issued in accordance with a Supreme Court decision. U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered her release after six days in jail, saying she “shall not interfere in any way, directly or indirectly, with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples.” If she tries to interfere, “that will be considered a violation of this Order and

appropriate sanctions will be considered,” Bunning said. Her lawyer, Mathew Staver, as well as Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, were at Davis’ side in front of the Carter County Detention Center, listening to supporters sing, shout and wave flags. “Kim is someone who is loyal to God and is loyal to her job and her people. She plans to be back at work this week,” said Staver. “Kim Davis cannot and will not violate her conscience,” Staver said. As an Apostolic Christian, Davis said she believes a marriage can only be between a man and a woman. She has refused to issue any marriage licenses since the U.S. Supreme Court in June made samesex marriages legal across the United States.
Baltimore has reached a tentative $6.4 million settlement with the family of Freddie Gray, a black man who died from an injury sustained in police custody, city officials said on Tuesday. The settlement with his family will be submitted to the Baltimore Board of Estimates for a vote on Wednesday, the office of Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake said in a statement, adding that it does not constitute an admission of liability. It will have no effect on the criminal trials of six officers charged with Gray’s death in April, the statement said. His death from a spinal injury following arrest sparked protests and rioting. Chief Operating Office Oscar Munoz as his replacement, effective immediately. United Continental’s shares fell 2.8 percent in trading after the bell on Tuesday. UAL’s general counsel, Brett Hart, declined during a conference call Tuesday to elaborate on the reasons for the departures or the status of a federal investigation into UAL’s relationship with a former chairman of the Port Authority. In February, the carrier had opened an internal investigation into its relationship with the former chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, following a government probe. Staff and inmates jubilant over pope’s visit to Philadelphia jail Pope. Leaders hope it will bring attention to prisoners’ rights. At Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, Deacon Ed Dymek is all smiles. The topic is Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to the facility, and he’s rhapsodizing on how wonderful it was to see the pontiff visit a detention center during his first Holy Week as pope. “That really lifted everyone out of their chair, and [made them say], ‘Wow, this is really unbelievable,â€? said Dymek, one of the two Catholic chaplains on duty. Philadelphia Prisons Commissioner Louis Giorla, who is Catholic, agreed: “It set the stage for his papacy.â€? Pope Francis has made headlines worldwide for embracing inmates in Bolivia and for washing and
kissing the feet of prisoners in Rome. In Philly, he’ll pray with 100 prisoners, 80 men from Curran-Fromhold and 20 women from neighboring Riverside Correctional Facility. The event will also welcome selected relatives of the inmates, staff, city officials and dignitaries, which would round attendance out to a few hundred, said Giorla. Dymek considers previous masses with Archbishop Charles Caput as successful test runs. “We’re ready, he affirmed. Father James Bretzke, a priest and professor of moral theology at Boston College, said the trip to Curran-Fromhold is steeped in lessons that the Pope has been teaching — that the Church has an obligation to reach the most marginalized.

Katy Perry’s father schools her on Segway skills following Burning Man fail
CULTURE
Katy Perry just got burned — and it was by her own dad. The singer made her first Burning Man appearance at the annual festival in the Nevada desert, but it all went wrong when Perry decided to hop on a Segway. She only managed a few spins before stumbling off it. Perry and more than half a million Instagram users found the humor — or
ridiculousness — in the attempt when she posted a video of the wipeout, calling it “an obvious first time burner alert.” And apparently her father found it amusing, too, as Perry posted a follow-up vid of her pops, Keith Hudson, showing off how easily he manages a Segway himself. He also rocks a wallet chain, though, so maybe ignore him. CRISTABELLE TUMOLA

In much sunnier relationship news, things seem to be going swimmingly between Bradley Cooper and girlfriend Irina Shayk, who got to spend a bikiniclad beach visit over Labor Day weekend with … Cooper’s mother, Gloria Campano, according to Us Weekly. Cooper, Shayk and Campano spent the extended holiday weekend in Atlantic City eating ice cream, hitting the surf and strolling on the boardwalk. According to

Justin Bieber is staying single for now Don’t worry, ladies, you’re safe — for now. Justin Bieber doesn’t want to make you his girlfriend. It turns out the Canadian pop star is still smarting from his breakup with Selena Gomez and he’s not looking to get into something new just yet. Because I know you were wondering. “I haven’t been in a relationship for a while. I’m chilling and just hanging out. Just being myself,” Bieber tells Australian radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson in an interview. “I am a relationship type of guy. I love to be in love and I love cuddling and I love all of that kind of stuff, but
I got my heart broken and so I’m just going to let that heal up.” Also, while discussing some volunteer work he did for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Bieber throws in an odd, unprompted defense of the late Michael Jackson. Because why not? “I think that’s a lot of the misconception that they had about Michael Jackson,” Bieber says. “He wanted to be around kids because they are just innocent and he never wanted anything from them. I don’t know if I believe all the stuff going on about Michael, but that’s just my opinion.” OK then.

Chelsea Clinton finds the good in Kanye for President
On the one hand, the topic of Kanye West running for president in 2020 is silly and far off and not a serious topic of conversation, so must we humor such an idea now? On the other hand, it’s a welcome distraction from the current Donald Trump-soaked 2016 presidential race, so maybe Yeezy is doing us a solid. And as it turns out, Chelsea Clinton thinks he may be helping in other ways by raising the idea. “I definitely think who runs for office is really important,” Clinton tells MTV News. “Even if him just saying that helps sparks a little boy or a little girl who was watching the VMAs to think, ‘Oh wow, maybe I should do that,’ that’s awesome.”

Hell’s Club Get on up with the get-down with one of the most ambitious and creative mash-ups ever made: “Hell’s Club,” which mixes and re-edits nightclub scenes from a host of movies such as “Trainspotting,” “Boogie Nights” and “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and puts
all the characters into the same red-tinted hot spot. And unlike most mash-ups, this one actually creates a coherent story. It’s tough to say what’s the best part — the Terminator trying to whack Tony Montana, leading to an epic dance floor gunfight or Blade always hitting the exit at the slightest hint of trouble — but the end result is tremendous.

What he really wants to do is direct Q&A. Chris Evans steps behind the camera with “Before We Go.
One more thing
How long had you been looking for a project to direct, and what was it about this one that spoke to you? I’ve been looking for a few years. It’s tricky on your ďŹ rst one. I wish I could say it was just the project that absolutely captivated me, but to get a project on its feet for a guy who has never directed anything, it’s not going to be so much of which project do you choose as which project chooses you, you know? Some projects are just the little engines that could, and it’s nice to kind of ďŹ nd something that no one else is doing and say, “OK, I’ll get my feet wet with this one.â€? You’re not going to go get some Aaron Sorkin script your ďŹ rst time out.
Getting an indie film made today can be tricky, but it helps if you know, say, one of the Avengers. Chris Evans makes his directorial debut with “Before We Go,â€? and starring in it himself was a key to it happening at all. Were you prepared for the amount of exterior NYC ďŹ lming this entailed? You literally pray every single night for no snow because we’re shooting in December in New York.
hung up on love stories.
Have you thought about what you’ll direct next? I already have my next project. It’s not something I can actually dive into right now, but it still is a bit of a love story — for some reason I’m all
You’ve mentioned not acting as much going forward and focusing more on directing. Right. Well, if a good acting job comes along, I’m not going to say no to it, but my priority right now

is still going to be trying to get behind the camera and learn and grow and get better. That’s still a field where I’m very inexperienced, so I’m excited to kind of cultivate that avenue. How about directing ďŹ lms you don’t star in? With this first movie, that was unfortunately part of the deal. To be completely candid, I don’t know that I would get the nod to direct a film if I weren’t in it. If I weren’t in the movie, and I could get three or four phenomenal actors,
great. I would gladly not be in it. But putting yourself in it makes that hurdle that much more manageable. Having Chris Evans as your lead isn’t so bad. [Laughs] It’s kind of one of the biggest hurdles in Hollywood right now: How do you get a film on its feet? welcome. The How to be ‘The Worst’ You’re hottest photos of men and cats ever
Interview. Aya Cash and Chris Geere say their emotionally stilted characters are doing their best to have a functional relationship.
Everyone has experienced moments of wanting to behave poorly just for the sheer pleasure of acting totally without thought for the consequences, whether by telling people exactly what you think of them, or stealing something from a wedding you don’t think the unpleasant bride and groom deserve. Most people, however, don’t actually act on those impulses, which is what sets Jimmy and Gretchen, of FXX’s “You’re the Worst,” apart. The show is a romcom about what happens when narcissistic one-hit wonder author Jimmy and also-narcissistic publicist Gretchen fall in love. The show’s second season examines the fallout when two such wildly immature people try living together. “They’re very much themselves with each other, and I think that’s very important in any relationship, no matter who they are,” says Aya Cash, who plays Gretchen, of the duo’s offkilter love story. “If you’re smart, you’re probably unhappy, is I think what they would say. It’s funny, there are things that happen in their relationship, that I would be like, if that person

lot of people in life, would love to say or do, but social politeness restricts us from doing that.” But despite all the darkness, the show is at its core pretty romantic. The two of them do love each other after all, despite their toxic behavior. “There is a sweetness to the show, even with all the darkness. I mean, they do find each other and they do want to be together and they do try, sometimes, to change, and to be better, even if it fails,” says Cash. “The tone of the show is not obvious, so we’re allowed to play with silly, pratfall physical comedy scenes one minute and then before we know it we’re crying and doing something heartfelt,” adds Geere. Kam Chancellor’s holdout is the only cloud hanging over Seattle. It’s reached the point where Pete Carroll is openly addressing trade rumors. Rookie wideout Tyler Lockett’s emergence adds another weapon to the passing game.
The Colts have been hit hard with injuries, mainly on two positions: the defensive line, where they’re struggling to find bodies, and running back, where Dan “Boom” Herron and Vick Ballard are hurt. Frank Gore looks good, but defense was already a question mark.
Well, the jury is still out, but the Eagles sure didn’t do anything to hurt themselves in the preseason. The offense looks like it might be a glass cannon, running roughshod over everyone they’ve faced so far but always dependent on the health of Sam Bradford and the offensive line.
The Broncos know their season will go as the offensive line and, by extension, Peyton Manning’s health goes. To that end, they’re trying to right the ship by signing Evan Mathis and focusing on the running game again this season. We’ll see how it all pans out.

Cardinals (11-5)
Patriots nation is celebrating after a big victory in court against the NFL, and they have every right to be. While the team’s playoff aspirations may never have been in doubt, getting Tom Brady back for those first four games makes homefield advantage a reasonable goal.
It’s a testament to Aaron Rodgers that a player the caliber of Jordy Nelson can go down and we remain relatively unfazed about the prospects of the Packers’ season. He’s done it without Nelson before, and he can do it again. But when everything shakes out in the end, this does hurt the Packers’ chances.
Even the fans furthest entrenched in the “anyone can run behind this line” mindset have to be a little concerned that Dallas is still looking for running backs by bringing in Seattle’s Christine Michael. The loss of Orlando Scandrick in the secondary hurts too.
If the Broncos slip, Kansas City is the team that stands to gain. The offense looks like a completely different animal with Jeremy Maclin and rookie Chris Conley in the building. Even if their undefeated preseason doesn’t count, rest assured a wide receiver will catch a touchdown this season.
The Cardinals are hoping they finally have the answer at running back in veteran Chris Johnson. CJ2K might be a long way removed from that 2K season, but he did average 4.3 yards per carry last year on a miserable Jets team. There may still be something left in the tank.

ESPN and Patriots at war NFL. Tom Brady and Bill Simmons chime in on the latest battle between the network and the Pats. For the past seven months, the Patriots have been at war with the NFL. Tuesday, it was confirmed that the Pats are at war with the sports media giant that “covers the league. ESPN came out with an 11,467-word report on, arguably, the biggest media day of the year (the first Tuesday after Labor Day) and rehashed Spygate — the Patriots videotaping scandal of 2007. ESPN reporters Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham interviewed “more than 90 league officials, coaches, current and former Patriots coaches, staffers and players in the report to show that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell went to such great lengths to punish Tom Brady and the Patriots because he felt pressure from other NFL owners to do a “makeup call for Spygate. The piece mixes plenty of fact with speculation regarding just how big of a “scheme the Patriots had as it relates to video-taping opponents. “There’s no evidence that they did [tape the St. Louis Rams walk-through in 2002], but there’s a suspicion that they did and at that time there was a suspicion, Wickersham told ESPN’s Mike & Mike on Tuesday.
So sorry Just last month, ESPN had to make an apology for repeating, as fact, that the
Sports Guy speaks Former ESPN employee Bill Simmons tweeted up a storm Tuesday. •
“I’m happy for the Colts — who kept blowing big games to NE until [Bill] Polian got the NFL to change the passing rules, but now have an excuse.
Patriots taped the Rams’ walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI. The network made this apology just once, at 12:20 in the morning. “On two occasions in recent weeks, “SportsCenter incorrectly cited a 2002 report regarding the New England Patriots and Super Bowl XXXVI, anchor Steve Levy said. “That story was found to be false and should not have been part of our reporting. We apologize to the Patriots organization. The Patriots offered a response to ESPN’s Tuesday story quickly after it was posted on ESPN.com. “[The false Rams] report created a media firestorm that extended globally and was discussed incessantly for months. It took four months before that newspaper retracted its story and offered the team a front- and back-page apology for the damage done. Clearly, the damage has been irreparable.
ESPN slammed Tom Brady and the Patriots following their loss to the Chiefs on Monday Night Football last year. / GETTY IMAGES
The ‘B.S. report’ The media firestorm in the Deflategate saga was flamed by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who tweeted on Jan. 20 that 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots in the 2014 AFC Championship Game were underinflated by two pounds of pressure per square inch. The Wells Report itself indicated that Mortensen’s tweet was incorrect and Mortensen would eventually delete the tweet, but an entire six months after it first appeared. Brady was asked by Kirk Minihane on WEEI’s “Dennis & Callahan show Tuesday if he might not be as cooperative with media outlets, particularly ESPN, moving forward given what has transpired these past seven months.

ing at ESPN. “I could sense with budget cuts coming at ESPN that head count was going to be an issue, Cowherd said. “The culture at ESPN, I found when I left, isn’t the same as when I came. It wasn’t as much fun. Simmons, an unabashed Patriots fan, has been tweeting for months that the majority of the analysts who criticize the Patriots on ESPN airwaves are players and coaches who lost to the Pats over the last decade and have an ax to grind. “Finished [ESPN] piece, Simmons tweeted Tuesday. “Agree with theory that Goodell’s Deflategate botching was a crazed overreaction to his bizarre Spygate performance but not sure what to make of the
sour grapes stuff. Sure seems like everyone who ever lost to the 2001-07 Patriots now has a built-in excuse for failure. [It] also doesn’t explain the Patriots’ ongoing success from Game 2 2007 through Super Bowl 49, which mirrored their success from 2001 through Game 1 2007.
Big money ESPN extended its deal with the NFL for $15.2 billion over eight years in 2011. “We do not have a more important deal than [with] the NFL, ESPN president John Skipper told Bloomberg in 2014. MATT BURKE @Burke_Metro sports@metro.us

“I think that’s probably a natural feeling to have,â€? Brady said. “I don’t know exactly how I’ll approach those things each week. ‌ I always try to fulfill obligations for people. It’s hard to fulfill them all.â€? Brady laughed in his Tuesday interview when WEEI host Gerry Callahan chimed in, “Chris Mortensen wants to have lunch tomorrow, are you available?â€? ESPN moved away from some of its more colorful personalities in recent months, as Colin Cowherd is now working for Fox Sports and Bill Simmons is now employed by HBO. Cowherd and Simmons had been highly critical of NFL practices, at times. Cowherd told Sports Business Daily Tuesday that there has been a clear shift in think-
