Salt of the earth. Pope Francis is visiting New York City while City Hall fends off criticism of rising homelessness.

As Pope Francis’s first visit to New York City in late September nears, questions linger about how the city will treat the homeless during the pope’s stop in Manhattan. Pope Francis, celebrated across the globe for his outreach to the needy and poor, is expected to hone in on homelessness during his visit to the United States. New Yorkers close to the issue hope his message strikes a chord with their neighbors. More than 60 New Yorkers rallied near the site of an alleged homeless encampment where the week before New York City Police cleared out the plaza before a visit from top cop Bill Bratton. Locals and advocates are crossing their fingers that the city won’t attempt to scrub out homeless New Yorkers during Pope Francis’ visit in late September, even as city officials have already expressed concern over the pope’s gregarious
nature toward all individuals — especially those in need. Protesters held signs with pictures of police arresting homeless New Yorkers, emblazoned with a phone number to call City Hall and a “HandsOffTheHomeless” hashtag. Brodie Enoch, also of Picture the Homeless, spent some time on the streets himself. Today the 54-year-old, Harlem-born man sits on the local community board, where he said members have talked about the pope’s visit. “I think they’re going to make sure the pope sees just a couple of homeless folks so he can bless them,” Enoch told Metro. Mayor Bill de Blasio and his administration appear to have earned the goodwill of many observers who point to his stated promises to proactively help the some 57,000 New Yorkers reliant on emergency shelters and countless others who stay on the streets. “We know this mayor and this administration are more committed to addressing the issue in a more humane way than any other administration in my lifetime,” said Marc Greenberg, executive director of the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing. As a result, Greenberg

said he expects a gentler touch from NYPD under the de Blasio administration. “I would suggest that homeless New Yorkers won’t be rounded up or pushed out,” he said. At the same time, City Hall earned the scrutiny of Harlem residents who on Wednesday accused police of mistreating homeless in the neighborhood, pushing them out of public areas many flock to for refuge. A City Hall spokeswoman told Metro the city’s focus would be on making sure New Yorkers are “the safest and most cherished experience possible” during the papal visit between Sept. 23 and 25. “A multiagency operation will be working to make the streets safe, keep the crowds under control, and provide opportunities for New Yorkers to see and hear the pope,” spokeswoman Karen Hinton wrote in a statement. The NYPD did not respond to Metro’s request for information by press time on how they plan to deal with homeless New
Yorkers leading up to and during Pope Francis’ visit. Previously, Commissioner Bratton said he expects to have thousands of officers on hand during the pope’s visit, although security efforts are being overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. “He has made it quite clear in his travels around the world that he wants to interact with the public in a way in which we’re not used to,” Bratton told reporters in mid-August of Pope Francis. “Bratton doesn’t have a very good history on [homelessness],” said William Burnett, a self-identified Roman Catholic and organizer with Harlembased nonprofit Picture the Homeless. “But hopefully he has a good grasp of what the Holy See hopes to do during his visit.” Earlier this month, police officials told reporters they identified more than 80 encampments and cleared out at least 10 with help from agencies tasked with offering services to those willing to receive assistance. Bratton also said officers were focused on displayed behavior by homeless, whether it be aggressive begging or lying down on either sidewalks or public benches. At Wednesday’s rally,
Enoch told Metro the politicization and arguments on homelessness as well as barrages of tabloid headlines only help New Yorkers lose sight of the individuals and families in desperate situations. “By taking the attention of the cure, let’s blame folks — let’s blame the people suffering the most for your problems,” he said. Across the street from the Harlem plaza, Kadia Beavogui set up a table with a burner and kitchen pot of stew. Every Wednesday and Friday, she and a partner hand out cups of the soup along with religious fliers and booklets. Beavogui doesn’t live in the neighborhood anymore; she commutes regularly from the Bronx to help out the familiar, homeless faces she’s grown to know over the years. Still, Beavogui said she’s noticed fewer of them lately. “They’re being chased out,” she said, adding that all are welcome to whatever help they can offer. “We are all have different beliefs, but God loves us so much he extends our love to others,” Beavogui said. Visitors thronged to the 9/11 Memorial in preparation for Friday’s commemoration of the terror attack that killed 2,977 in 2001. Similar to the last 13 years, there will be a name-reading ceremony to honor those who died in the worst terrorist attack in the United States. “I understand it is something that we should never stop doing,” said Kathleen Kruccek, visiting the memorial from Pennsylvania. The commemoration begins at 8:46 a.m. with a moment of silence marking the time the first plane struck the North Tower. The ceremony will continue with five more moments of silence in between name readings, observing the moments when the other planes hit the South Tower, the Pentagon and the Flight 93 crash, as well as when the Towers fell. Music will be played while the names are being read and houses of worship will toll their bells throughout the city. The names of those lost dur-
ing the 1993 World Trade Center bombing will also be read. While many visiting the memorial snapped selfies and felt a sense of pride in it, some feel that the annual ceremony should end. “I strongly believe they should have stopped reading the names on the 10th anniversary,” said Brian Egan, 59 from the Bronx. “This just drags us to the past and I don’t know if it’s fair to the families. Grieving shouldn’t last 10 years.” Egan lost 18 friends during the World Trade Center attack. He witnessed when the second plane hit the tower from his downtown office and disaster that happened next. Some of those gone were childhood friends and many of their names are grouped together in one area of the memorial. He recalls attending
many funerals, even two for one fire lieutenant whose body parts were recovered at different times. Despite the vivid recollection, he feels that it’s time to leave the past where it belongs without forgetting those lost and focus on those who need the help today. “The fact that these guys are dying of cancer [9/11 responders] and being denied proper health care, that’s a shame and national disgrace,” Egan said. Regardless of his feelings toward the politics behind it all, he plans to visit the museum eventually and looks over fondly at the reflecting pool memorial. “This is a nice tribute to everybody,” Egan said. New Jersey man charged in $3.5 million fraud case Meet the Mets? He is accused of impersonating the Mets CEO.
The head of a New Jersey equipment leasing com-
pany stands accused of impersonating the New York Mets CEO and co-owner as part of a $3.5 million fraud. Michael Conway, 39, was arrested Wednesday and charged in a criminal complaint in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, with wire fraud and aggra-
vated identity theft in connection with a scheme to defraud a hedge fund investor and financing company. As part of the scheme, prosecutors said Conway forged the signature of Jeffrey Wilpon, the Mets’ partner and chief operating officer, to get a bank
loan from DLL Group. Conway, a resident of Verona, New Jersey, was arrested Wednesday morning and expected to appear in court later in the day. Neither the Mets nor DLL responded to requests for comment. REUTERS

Ellis Island. Artifacts to return to museum More than 200 artifacts telling stories of early 20th century immigrants to the United States will be returned to Ellis Island’s immigration museum on Thursday following repairs needed after Superstorm Sandy in 2012, federal officials said. About half the items in the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, including children’s shoes, steamship tickets and passports, were removed as a precaution while its mechanical and electrical systems underwent $39.4 million in repairs, National Park Service officials said on Wednesday. Superstorm Sandy hit New York and New Jersey in October 2012, killing more than 100 people and causing billions of dollars in damage to power, transportation and water facilities. The museum and historic buildings were mostly undamaged, but the storm destroyed the island’s electrical, communication, water

and sewage systems. The repair work ensures that the infrastructure will be unaffected by any future flooding. None of the artifacts were damaged because floodwater never reached the first floor. “Up to this point, it has been disappointing for some of our visitors to come into the museum and see that a good bit of the exhibits did not have the artifacts in them,” said Jerry Willis, a spokesman for the National Park Service. The items were kept in storage during the repair work. Installation of the artifacts will begin on Sept. 16 and is expected to be completed by early October. REUTERS

Group urges GOP candidates to defund Planned Parenthood
An influential conservative group is calling on Republican presidential candidates to vow they will veto any future funding for women’s health care provider Planned Parenthood, which is under fire from abortion opponents. In a letter seen by Reuters that is being sent to all party hopefuls in the 2016 White House race, the ForAmerica advocacy group asks candidates to make “a firm commitment” to starve Planned Parenthood of federal funding. ForAmerica Chairman Brent Bozell — who has personally endorsed
Republican Senator Ted Cruz for 2016 — also calls on the candidates to say whether they would launch an investigation by the Department of Justice into Planned Parenthood. ForAmerica has a 7.7 million-member online presence, which in the past has bombarded Republican congressional leadership with phone calls and emails to promote conservative positions. Republicans have turned their sights on Planned Parenthood again since an anti-abortion group began posting secretly recorded videos online. The center says the tapes show Planned Parenthood engaged in illegal sales of fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood counters that the videos were distorted and says that it did nothing wrong. REUTERS
Defiant clerk’s backers want aides fired over marriage licenses to gays
Supporters of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples due to her religious beliefs, said on Wednesday that any of her deputies who provide such documents without her permission should be fired. Ante Pavkovic, one of the people who helped organize proDavis rallies outside the Grayson, Kentucky, detention center where Davis was jailed, lectured the deputy clerks not to violate their oaths of office, like Judge Bunning and the U.S. Supreme Court justices who backed gay marriage did. Nine possible shootings along Arizona interstate
The number of possible vehicle shootings along a stretch of freeway in Phoenix has jumped to nine over the last 10 days, the head of Arizona’s state police said. Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Saf said the attacks continued at following two fo possible shootings po early earl Tuesday on Interstate 10, the southernmost transcontinental highway in the U.S. The shootings began on Aug. 29 along a roughly 10-mile segment of the highway when gunfire shattered the windshield of a sport utility vehicle, authorities said. Cincinnati police chief fired amid low department morale
Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell was fired on Wednesday, according to a memo from the city manager citing low department morale and a hostile work environment. City Manager Harry Black also said Blackwell had not provided necessary leadership and had disregarded the chain of command. Black said morale at the department was at an unprecedented low and Blackwell’s leadership style had created a work environment of hostility and retaliation. Assistant Chief Eliot Isaac has been appointed interim police chief. REUTERS
Instagram opens up to advertisers worldwide
Instagram opened its platform to most advertisers across the globe on Wednesday as the photosharing app seeks to make more money and compete with rivals. Ads, previously available only in eight countries, will debut in 20 others including Italy, Spain and India. More than 200 countries will have ads by Sept. 30. With 300 million monthly active users, Instagram has a key advantage over rivals because parent Facebook Inc.’s vast trove of consumer data allows it to target audiences more accurately, a major selling point for advertisers. Survey: Increased number of sharks off the East Coast On the rise. The numbers have increased in each survey since 2001 and point to steady population gains. U.S. shark researchers caught and tagged 2,835 sharks along the East Coast this spring, a record number which they say reflects a growing population thanks to federal protections. It surpassed the 1,831 sharks captured and tagged in 2012 during the survey, which is conducted every three years by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The increased shark count comes in the wake of a spate of shark attacks on swimmers this summer off the coast of Florida and the Carolinas, though research-

ers say the annual trend is about normal. Sharks were on the decline in 1986 when the first survey took place during a worldwide boom in commercial shark fin fisheries to feed Asian markets. U.S. protections for sharks in a fishery management plan went into effect in 1993. The plan banned fishing for certain sharks and limited fishing seasons
for others, among other rules. “I think that’s what turned it around — effective management. Just the decrease in fishing pressure on these species has helped quite a bit,” said Lisa Natanson, a scientist who leads the survey at the Narragansett Laboratory of NOAA Fisheries’ Northeast Fisheries Science Center. McDonald’s in US, Canada to use only cage-free eggs McDonald’s Corp.’s 16,000 U.S. and Canadian restaurants will serve only eggs laid by cage-free chickens within 10 years, the company said on Wednesday. McDonald’s USA has been buying more than 13 million cage-free eggs annually since 2011. The
long-awaited switch is happening as North American egg suppliers are slowly starting to rebuild flocks after the worst bird flu outbreak in U.S. history. The move comes as McDonald’s, the world’s biggest restaurant chain, is preparing to serve break-

Bush says tax reform would bring jobs home 2016. Bush is one of a crowded field vying to be the Republican nominee for the presidential election. Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush laid out a tax reform proposal on Wednesday that he touted as encouraging U.S. businesses abroad to bring jobs home and avoiding erecting protectionist walls that he said are backed by rival Donald Trump. Bush, fighting for position in a Republican field now largely dominated by Trump, said in a speech in Garner, North Carolina, that his tax plan would include reductions that would mean 42 million middle-class families would see their income tax rate cut by a third. And while Democrats

attacked Bush for backing a reduction in the top income tax rate for the highest earners, from 39.6 percent to 28 percent, Bush
said that with tax deductions eliminated, people who make $200,000 or more would bear a greater share of the tax burden. Real estate mogul Trump, whom Bush accuses of being a Democrat in disguise, has repeatedly attacked the trade policies of China and Mexico and has vowed to retaliate if elected president. “Now those on the left, and even some people who call themselves Republicans, will tell you that to save U.S. jobs, we have to throw up a bunch of walls and tariffs and protect our businesses from competition,” Bush said. “That’s a siren call of surrender and I won’t go for it. Protectionism never works.” Bush’s plan echoes a number of Republican ideas that have fallen short of congressional approval, such as eliminating the estate tax on assets left by people when they die. Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.
Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a trained health care professional. And the great news is: There is a free report and information kit available that tells you everything you need to know about this treatment. It also tells you all about cuttingedge medical clinics right here in New York City that are offering this cutting-edge treatment with tremendous success. To get your information kit or to schedule a NoObligation Risk Free Shoulder Screening simply call 800-627-PAIN (7246).

Tech. Apple TV comes with ‘apps’; big iPad aimed at business Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook unveiled a new version of its Apple TV product with an app store and a voice-controlled remote control, part of a trio of announcements aimed at revamping its product line. Cook described the new Apple TV, a product which the company long called a “hobby, as the future of television, offering personalization and ease of use. The announcement came after Cook showed off a big new iPad aimed at business customers, which has an optional “Pencil stylus and keyboard. He also began describing an updated pair of iPhones that feature a so-called “3-D touch’ interface and other upgrades. “People love to hate Apple announcements because the expectations are so high and they can never clear that bar, said Kevin Landis, portfolio manager of the $111 mil-

2 NYFW 3 6 4 5 7 Will Givenchy democratize New York Fashion Week?
Will we (finally) have a post-gender, post-racial runway?
Mais non! Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci is bringing the Paris label to NYC — and opening the show up to the hoi polloi. On the invite list: 1,200 regular Joes. Quelle horreur!
Sure, the runways may still be predominantly white, but there’s no denying casting directors are starting to branch out. Model Madeline Stuart, who has Down syndrome, will walk FTL Moda, while Winnie Harlow, an “America’s Next Top Model” vet who has a skin condition, promises to return after last season’s splash. Eckhaus Latta won accolades last season for its diverse lineup and so did Chromat and Kanye West for showing a wide(r) range of bodies and colors. Will other designers follow suit? Let’s hope yes.
The seven juiciest gossip items at
N York Fashion Week officially starts Thursday, and New this t season is no less full of rumors, controversies and speculations than previous ones. Here’s everything you s need to know to keep up with it all. RAQUEL LANERI
W will take over Who ffor Alexander Wang aat Balenciaga?
ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
Will Public School bring urban cool back into DKNY? The biggest debut of the season: Public School designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne will be taking the helm at DKNY — and taking charge of Donna Karan’s legacy at large after the iconic designer stepped down from her namesake label earlier this summer. Expect the cool-kid duo to inject some attitude, youthful insouciance and gender-bending into the label.
N York bad boy Alexander New Wang up and quit his fancy post at W FFrench label Balenciaga in July to focus on his own label, sparkfo ing speculations about who will in take his place. But after Wang’s ta comments about his time there co — “essentially I [was] just another eemployee,” he told W Magazine — don’t expect any big-name ddesigners to be scrambling for the gig. th
Will yoga pants be the new sneakers?
Is fashion over Twitter?
Last season, it was declasse to be seen Instagramming the runway — this time, will tweeting your observations seem totally naff? Apparently, fashion commenters and brands aren’t going on the social media platform to share news, reach fans or even just hang out anymore. And with Aliza Licht leaving her post at DKNY PR Girl and Erika Bearman no longer tweeting at Oscar PR Girl, is Fashion Twitter on its last legs?
F2
While style-blog celebs continue to dress to the hilt, the rest of the front row has gotten increasingly casual. Last season, it was a sea of sneakers, knit beanies and puffer coats. Now, with “sport” wear invading the runways — not to mention the climbing temps and flash floods — are editors gonna show up in their literal gym clothes?
Will Caitlyn Jenner usurp the rest of the Kardashian clan? Caitlyn Jenner is going to be the celebrity get this season — and we bet her presence will cause even more hoopla than the rest of the Kardashian and Jenner brood. Anna Wintour, for one, will surely welcome the opportunity to sit courtside with the transgender heroine, who is certain to be quieter — and better behaved — than last season’s seatmate, North West.

When you’re a worldfamous supermodel who’s walked for some of the biggest names in fashion today, where do you turn for inspiration for your own line? “My closet,” says Joan Smalls with a smile. “Being around so many creative people, [we models] see firsthand how [designers] deal with fabrics, silhouettes, with what’s in — and how they think. And you absorb your surroundings.” Last season, Smalls took this on-the-field training and spun it into

her first-ever collection for True Religion: a 16-piece capsule based on her sporty-yet-fierce off-duty aesthetic. For fall, the two have teamed up again for an even bigger collection launching today. So what did the 27-yearold learn from her design debut? “Women want to feel sexy,” says Smalls. “They want to feel beautiful and confident no matter what they wear — and you always obtain that look with easy pieces.” For the Puerto Rican native, who describes her own style as “easygoing chic,” those key pieces include buttery soft T-shirts with leather sleeves, cropped neoprene
sweatshirts and skinny jeans with edgy gunmetal zipper details, all in vampy shades of inky black. Below, she tells us about her key pieces — and (crucial!) how to pick the jeans that will most flatter your butt.
Why a peacock print sweatshirt? “My parents lived in Connecticut when I was born, and then they came to Puerto Rico and decided to get six acres of land and every single animal you can imagine. They had cows, dogs, turkeys, chickens, pigs, ducks and peacocks. I remember picking up the feathers and playing with them. They’re such a graceful animal.”
Smalls’ denim styling tips
1
“Always make sure your butt looks good in the jeans,” says Smalls. “It’s all about the pocket size.” (To wit, the model asked that the True Religion horseshoe logo, on the back pockets, be made smaller on her line.)

Pick a classic wash. “I need a pair of jeans that five years from now, I can still go back to it,” she says.

The new home of NYFW After a nasty breakup with Lincoln Center, the fashion flock head downtown. RAQUEL LANERI
raquel.laneri@metro.us
Street-style spotters: If you want to catch the fashion flock in all their (weatherinappropriate) glory, don’t go to Lincoln Center. Try Penn Station. Or the High Line. Or Tribeca. Basically, go anywhere south of Fashion Week’s former Upper West Side venue, and you’re bound to catch a glimpse of Anna Wintour’s bob eventually. “I like change,” says New York-based designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who will show at Skylight Clarkson Sq in Tribeca after several seasons at Lincoln Center. “There’s a fresh energy in the spaces, and downtown really is the new home of
fashion.” Even before Lincoln Center filed a lawsuit claiming that IMG Fashion Week’s lease violated a charter agreement (oops!), the fashion vanguard had started migrating south. Edgier designers, from Marc Jacobs to Rodarte, had decamped to downtown long ago, with more mainstream brands like Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors following suit in recent years. “People really reacted negatively to all the corporate logos everywhere,” says Cynthia Anderson, a photographer who has covered the shows for 14 seasons. “The plaza, the megatrons — they made Fashion Week feel less exclusive, less cool.” This season, IMG has picked two smaller, grittier venues to reclaim some of that lost magic: Moynihan Station, the former post office across from Penn Station, and the raw Clarkson Sq space.
Jason Wu is one of the buzzy designers who always shows off-site. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
But even if the two venues are closer to “cooler” shows, they’re still not exactly convenient — try shuttling between Tribeca and midtown with camera equipment, show notes and statement shoes, and you’re going to get tired fast (not to mention miss a few appointments). And while the two main venues house a majority of shows, there are still hundreds of designers showing at other venues, including Milk Studios near the High
Line, long the site of the alternative MADE Fashion Week, which spotlights smaller brands. “It’s liberating for designers to pick a location that echoes the inspiration for their collection,” says Pamella Roland, who will show at the snazzy new Whitney Museum in the Meatpacking District. “But a centralized location makes it easier for buyers and press — especially in February.” Plus, for all its faults — the crowds, the terrible nightclub-esque redesign — there was something special about Lincoln Center. “It is this hub of culture,” says Mohapatra. “The opera, musicals, ballet — it made sense to have fashion in that spot.” “I think people will miss the bigness of it all,” adds Anderson. “Those Anna Sui shows with the crush of people and supermodels and flashing lights — nothing beats those.”
Dream venue We asked four designers, if they could show *anywhere* in New York City, where they would do it. Here’s what they said.
Rebecca Minkoff: “A New York landmark like Grand Central or the MoMA would be amazing.”
Pamella Roland: “I am living the dream. I’m showing at the incredible new Whitney Museum of American Art. There isn’t any other venue I’d rather show in.”
Mara Hoffman: “The Botanical Gardens.”
Bibhu Mohapatra: “I would take over all of Grand Central and put on this spectacular show. The space is so beautiful with that painted ceiling — you wouldn’t have to do much to it!”

How about a postdivorce, intra-‘Voice’ romance?
There’s a delightful kind of symmetry to this new gossip item about “The Voice” judges Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton possibly becoming an item in the wake of their respective divorces. It’s all just so streamlined and convenient. I love it. “They’re really into each other. Let’s face it, they were both unhappily married when they met,” a source tells In Touch. “Now their divorce proceedings are something they can talk about and commiserate over.” (Maybe don’t use that in the vows, though?) Apparently they’ve been doing more than just commiserating. While it seems odd for the singer of No Doubt to be getting down with country star Shelton, apparently he’s completely smitten with her. Shelton “is in awe of her career, talent and business savvy,” the source explains. “And she has been reveling in the attention. When they’re not together, Blake has been calling her, too. He’s even given her some small gifts.” For folks at this level, what constitutes “small”?

Back in January, hackers insisted they had some nude photos of Taylor Swift they could leak, but Swift laughed off the claims, insisting no such photos existed. Well, things might have changed. The folks over at Radar Online say they’ve been approached by a Swift confidant looking to sell a steamy photo of Swift and boyfriend Calvin Harris. The site’s editors are patting them-
Ellen really hated doing ‘American Idol’
Regrets? Ellen DeGeneres has a few. And chief among them is agreeing to be a judge on “American Idol” back in 2010. “That’s one of the worst decisions I’ve made,” DeGeneres tells Howard Stern during an interview, admitting that she “hated” her time on the show. That’s quite a statement, honestly, and she’s not the first former judge to speak out about the show. In May, Mariah Carey admitted during a

Is Swift the victim of a squad member gone rogue? Or is this all part of some elaborate scheme on her part to get herself a more grown-up image? And should you take it as a kind of insult if a tabloid isn’t interesting in buying your nudes?
radio interview that her tenure on the hit reality series was pretty terrible, too. “That was the worst experience of my life,” Carey said. “I’m not going to get into what it was, but let’s just say I don’t think they had any intentions for us to have a good experience doing that show.” Yikes. Good thing it’s ending after the upcoming season, yeah? So what is it about the show that made these folks so

Music festival. Lisa Loeb plays ’90s Fest alongside Coolio, Salt N Pepa, Smash Mouth, Blind Melon, Naughty by Nature and more What did you love about the ’90s? It was before we were all using cellphones, so that was good. I think hair products were just starting to come around in the ’90s, which was exciting. I remember a photoshoot I had in the mid-’90s where I got to use a flat iron for the first time. It was like this huge, breakthrough moment.
If Buzzfeed has helped prove anything, it’s that people will never stop loving the ’90s. This weekend, Brooklyn is going all out with an entire music festival dedicated to the decade. We called up one of the performers, Lisa Loeb, to find out what we can expect. First, what have you been up to lately? Right now, I’m making a new kids album that will be out in the fall. My most recent “grown-up” album, “No Fairytale,” came out a couple years ago, which I worked on with Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory and also Tegan and Sara. I also have a [nonprofit] called Camp Lisa, which helps send kids to camp. We came out with a musical in the spring here in New York City, and our next big project is to take it on the road. Wow. And of course you have the ’90s Fest coming up. Yes! I’m excited to see Salt N Pepa. What can people expect from your performance? I’ll be playing an acoustic set and all the songs I had on the radio in the ’90s. I’m definitely going to play “Stay (I Missed You).” I always play that
What didn’t you like about the ’90s? Mock turtlenecks. Mustard yellow [clothes]. Those things were not great.

song. It’s the No. 1 mostrequested song. It was featured on “Orange Is The New Black” this season. Yes! That was a great usage of the song. It really showed the connection different people have to it; people of all different races and ages. I see that when I’m on
the road touring. For one person, the song means a lot to them because it helped them get through a breakup. Another person used to sing it in the car with friends. A younger person used to sing it in the car with her mom. People have a lot of different associations with that song.
You were living in New York City in the ’90s, right? Yes. I lived in New York for a long time, mostly in the West Village and East Village, but I also lived in the Upper East Side, Upper West Side and Chelsea at different times. There was a group of us, especially in the early days, that really supported each other. We were mostly actors or musicians and we would go to each other’s shows. Ethan Hawke had a theater company and we all participated in that. Basically, we would just run around the West Village and East Village and go to different restaurants, bars and theaters. Twenty One Pilots on ‘Blurryface’ and initially turning down the VMAs Interview. Tyler Joseph gets honest — real honest — about his lyrics and the crazy MTV Video Music Awards drama you didn’t see on TV. When we catch up with Tyler Joseph, one half of alternative hip-hop duo Twenty One Pilots, it’s days after their MTV Video Music Awards performance and the weekend before the start of their U.S. tour. Joseph and partner Josh Dun are promoting their new album “Blurryface,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and had multiple singles in the iTunes Top 10 the first few weeks after its
May 18 release. It’s the busiest time in their lives, but Joseph talked with us at length about the darkness behind his lyrics and what we didn’t see on TV while watching the VMAs.
What goes into a VMA performance Twenty One Pilots and A$AP Rocky nailed their VMA performance on the main stage, but Joseph says it almost didn’t happen. “MTV came to us and said we got to play the VMAs, but there was a catch — we had to perform with a particular artist,” Joseph says. “When they told us who the artist was, we thought long and hard about it and we decided [the collaboration] didn’t make sense so we said no. I don’t think anyone had ever said no to them before.” MTV

came back to the duo and suggested A$AP Rocky instead, and the guys said yes. But because of their European tour, they didn’t meet for the first time until just two days before the performance. “We rented out a rehearsal space to hash out our ideas and, to be honest, the first six
hours were not going well at all, Joseph says. “We were not connecting creatively. Honestly, there was a moment when Rocky and I looked at each other, like, this is not going to work. Of course, the guys made it happen and it became one of the buzziest performances of the night.
Brutal honesty One big reason for the duo’s success is the honesty behind their lyrics. On the new album, Joseph created a character, Blurryface, to represent his personal insecurities and struggles. “The character not only helped me write the record, but also
to continue to perform it live, he says. “I love [performing], but there’s also something that’s really hard about it, just the transparency and vulnerability. He says writing the record was emotionally exhausting: “When I was done, I felt completely drained, like everything I’ve ever wanted to say has been said. But luckily for fans, that’s not the case. In fact, he’s writing again and already thinking of the next record. “That voice that longs to say something important has come back to life, he says.

Jackie Chan moves from smackdowns to story Interview. The legendary actor and martial artist stretches himself with the new “Dragon Blade.” A few years back, it seemed Jackie Chan had aged out of action. He’s now 61, and even five years ago, with the “Karate Kid” remake, Chan was content to play mentor to Jaden Smith. But he’s still got it and is still willing to do it, if not to the extremes of his heyday. In “Dragon Blade,” Chan plays a disgraced Han dynastyera patrol commander who teams up with a disgraced Roman commander (John Cusack) to take on an evil, hammy consul (Adrien Brody).

“Dragon Blade” is more reliant on story than your past films, which front-loaded the action. Is that a reflection of you getting older? My action style has changed as the audiences’ expectations have

changed. When you look at my previous films, I was fighting from the opening credits to the closing credits. But now the audience is much more sophisticated and wants a story. With a strong story, even a single punch can make the audiences cheer the house down. All those years, I was jumping off tall buildings and leaping off moving buses. So stupid! This is a case where American actors come over to China to make one of your movies. How did you
integrate them into the production? Both John and Adrien were really nice and hardworking. Many Chinese actors should learn from them. Adrien is a world-famous, Oscar-winning actor, but he had no assistant with him. Can you believe that? He even carried his own luggage. I feel that’s a bit too low-key actually; at least he should have brought a translator with him. I assigned one of my own people to him.
Are there stunts you’d still like to do in the future? It depends on the story. It’s true that I’m no longer doing those crazy stunts from my younger years. But I still want to satisfy my audience, who always expects authenticity from me. My next film is set on the railway tracks in 1930s Manchuria, so I’m sure you’ll see me going one-to-one with locomotives. That’s going to be a challenge, and I think it will give audiences something new again.

Autumn is a season of food festivals in Ireland and a good time to sample the charms of counties Cork and Kerry in the southwest before the short winter days set in. Dingle, the most westerly town in Ireland, is a village by most standards, with a year-round population of some 2,000 souls, though this triples in the summer. In early October, as visitor numbers decline, a familiar peace descends on Dingle’s triangle of colorful streets, and cars are once more outnumbered by tractors and bicycles. The Dingle Food Festival (Oct. 2 to 4, www.dinglefood.com) is a lively event organized by local volunteers, showcasing the produce of Dingle’s traditional farmers and fishermen and its many artisan food makers. Local fishermen catch tuna, scallops, mussels, crab and lobster, as well as cod, the must-have ingredient for fish and chips. The town’s seafood hot spot, Out of the Blue (www.outoftheblue. ie), boasts that it will not open unless there is freshly caught fish to serve. A thriving farmers market will introduce you to local charcuterie and cheese, home-baked bread and a range of homemade gourmet delights. These include locally brewed beer and cider, samples from Dingle’s own whiskey distillery

Natural wonders in Quechee Gorge Vermont’s dramatic “Grand Canyon” is the centerpiece of an area perfect for enjoying autumn colors, unique shops and fine dining. Quechee Gorge State Park is one of Vermont’s most popular natural areas. The focal point of the park is the gorge that drops as far as 165 feet to the rapids of the Ottauquechee River. Hiking trails through the park
and viewing areas along Route 4 provide endless “gotta get a shot of this” stops. There’s even the mandatory scenic covered bridge over the river. From the adjacent parking lot, you can scramble to the boulders below the bridge to splash and picnic.

2015 NFL season preview: Luck, Colts will break out NFL. Our picks for who wins each division and why, and who will compete for Super Bowl 50. It’s finally here. After Deflategate and a wild offseason, the 2015 NFL season kicks off this weekend with 32 teams vying for a berth in the 50th Super Bowl. And while there is no predicting the inevitable onslaught of injuries or the rise of the next of the league’s superstars — clandestine on NFL depth charts somewhere, ready to burst on the scene — there is no harm in taking a guess as to which teams will rise to the top, and which players will nab hardware. Here are our picks: AFC East: Patriots The Pats are still the team to beat this year, despite some roster turnover. If Jimmy Garoppolo was starting, the Bills and Dolphins — both improved — would have a legitimate shot here. But they won’t be able to unseat the reigning champs and Tom Brady. Look for the Fins to be in the mix for a wild-card spot with New England in the mix for a first-round bye.
defense. Cowboys will win a wild-card spot.
NFC North: Packers It’s a three-team race up north with the Packers, favored even without Jordy Nelson, barely fending off the Lions and Vikings to win the division. The Lions could mount a serious challenge and are a real threat as a wild-card playoff team. Aaron Rodgers still puts up MVP-worthy numbers.
Andrew Luck has a full arsenal of offensive weapons at his disposal this season. / GETTY IMAGES
AFC North: Ravens Many football pundits have Baltimore in this year’s Super Bowl. The Ravens have the edge with a more complete roster than the Bengals and Steelers, but both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh have the firepower to make it a dogfight, or even make it a trio of teams from the North in the playoffs. AFC South: Colts They may have been blown out of the water in the AFC title game (ground zero for Deflategate) but the Colts have certainly reloaded and will be among the top
teams in the entire NFL in 2015. Don’t be shocked if Andrew Luck hooks up with new acquisition veteran Andre Johnson with great frequency, or if Frank Gore revitalizes the Indy running game. AFC West: Broncos Don’t bet against Peyton Manning. With an offseason of rest and hard work behind him, the 39-yearold future Hall of Famer should be in regular season form and could lead Denver to the promised land. But the Chiefs and Chargers are not to be trifled with, and the Broncos will likely rely more
The big picks
•
AFC Championship: Colts over Patriots — The official changing of the guard will take place in the AFC.
•
NFC Championship: Eagles over Packers — Sam Bradford is an All-Pro, the Eagles’ offense sets records and the defense is deep enough to stand tough for extended reps on the field.
•
•
Watt from HBO’s Hard Knocks: Watt can mount a goal line stand all by himself. Watt sleeps 10
•
Super Bowl 50: Colts over Eagles — The Birds come close but can’t overcome Andrew Luck and his thwarting of the Eagles’ secondary. Defensive player of the year: J.J. Watt, Texans. Things learned about
hours a day and treats his body like an Olympian. Watt never stops practicing (except when he sleeps). Watt played quarterback in practice. Watt did an awesome Chris Farley impression. Back-to-back trophies for the best player in the NFL.
•
JJ WATT GETTY IMAGES
Offensive player of the year: Adrian Peterson, Vikings. APete is back with a vengeance. He’ll also win comeback player of the year. NFL MVP: Andrew Luck, Colts. Andre Johnson, T.Y. Hilton, Dwayne Allen and Frank Gore — that’s plenty for Luck.
on C.J. Anderson and the ground game. NFC East: Eagles Chip Kelly’s success comes down to the health of his players. If Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray can stay healthy and play an entire season, there is no limit to how far this team can go. And even if not, Kelly has taken two Eagles teams to double-digit wins with a combination of Nick Foles, Michael Vick and Mark Sanchez at the helm. Bet on his scheme, and his just-good-enough
NFC South: Buccaneers Like last season, no one in the NFC South really deserves a playoff spot. So why not have some fun and take Jameis Winston and the underrated Bucs to win the division? Matt Ryan and Julio Jones aren’t enough to carry the Falcons, and Cam Newton’s primary weapons are too beat up for Carolina to take the division. NFC West: Seahawks The Cardinals aren’t bad, but the Rams (too early) and Niners (too late) are really no threat for one of the best defenses in history — along with Russell Wilson, who has got Jimmy Graham on his side. Cruz still out It’s not his surgically repaired knee, but an injury to the left calf that has kept Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz sidelined for over three weeks now. A key weapon for Eli Manning and the New York offense, it is unknown when he will be back on the field. “For whatever reason, these things are very hard to get over,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

DEPTH IS KEY HEADING INTO NFL WEEK 1 Annnddddd pencils down. It’s time to submit your answers to some of the summer’s key position battles. Although NFL depth charts will remain fluid throughout the season, the guys that enter Week 1 as starters have a big advantage. Namely, they get the first crack to play well and separate from the pack — and sometimes that’s all these players need:

The Falcons’ running game has been broken for a few years now. The addition of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was step one to getting that turned around, as his zoneblocking scheme has been highly effective throughout his career. So when the Falcons (and Shanahan) used a third-round pick on Tevin Coleman, a big green light should have gone off. Coleman has beaten out Devonta Freeman for the starting gig Week 1 and will bring a lot of home-run hitting
Pickups of the week
•
Tyrod Taylor, QB, Bills — A Michael Vickian athlete who can carry a fantasy box score with his legs alone.

upside. Freeman has the look of a situational back.
Big mess in Big D Joseph Randle is listed atop the Cowboys’ “official” depth chart. But the team is declining to name a starter heading into the opener and a healthy Darren McFadden has been getting first-team reps. Lance Dunbar will
also be involved on pass downs and new addition Christine Michael is a freak talent. The team doesn’t even appear to know what to expect out of their backfield, leading to a “play it by ear” or “hot hand” plan for Week 1. It’s ideally a wait-and-see situation for owners.
No fun Funchess Panthers coach Ron Rivera announced that Corey Brown (aka Philly) and Ted Ginn will be his starting wideouts against the Jaguars in Week 1. Don’t buy that. Ginn is a onetrick pony and Brown is an underwhelming talent fighting a severe case of the butterfingers. The only reason Devin Funchess isn’t starting yet is because of a hamstring injury that hampered his preseason.

JPP-less Giants scramble prior to opener The Giants began their season-opening preparation in earnest on Wednesday as they get ready for their Sunday prime-time matchup in Dallas. And with all due respect to the Jason PierrePaul situation, that is not the biggest concern for Tom Coughlin right now. As the head coach noted, the Giants need to prepare for a “very good Dallas team that won the division last year. It was good to know that Pierre-Paul was at the facilities, determined Coughlin, but the real hot-button issue isn’t the availability of their star defensive end — whenever that may be — but the opening game against a team that’s had their number lately. “There are certainly many areas where we need to improve, and I think we will improve,
Coughlin said. “I think we have to zoom in on this particular Cowboys team and see if we can’t clean up our issues in terms of execution and ďŹ nishing the play and doing the things necessary to be successful. ‌ There are deďŹ nite areas everywhere in our game that can be improved upon, but make no doubt about it: The season is underway, and we’re going to have to get there in a hurry.â€? The Giants have lost four consecutive openers, with the last opening weekend victory coming against the Carolina Panthers in 2010. Coughlin noted that nothing in the past matters — not even the Cowboys’ current fourgame winning streak in this series, with the last Big Blue win coming on Oct. 28, 2012. All he is concerned with is prepping for this game, noting a meeting in Dallas against the NFC East’s defending champion is enough to worry about. “I don’t keep track [of
season-opening diďŹƒculties],â€? Coughlin groused. “I’m anxious to get started.â€? Pierre-Paul is one guy who won’t be available, but Coughlin noted the team hasn’t been distracted by all the talk. He thinks his team is focused and in the right frame of mind. “Regarding JPP — he’s not ready to play. He went back to Florida,â€? Coughlin said about the defensive end’s Monday meeting. Big Blue is determined to start the season on the right foot, but it’ll be a huge task. Linebacker Jon Beason was allowed to practice on Wednesday and test his balky knee. Same for linebacker Jonathan Casillas and his neck. As insurance, however, the Giants signed linebacker Jasper Brinkley on Wednesday. The veteran was released by the Cowboys on Monday, so there could be some gamesmanship there. Coughlin noted it wasn’t, reasoning that signing Brinkley “was a necessity.â€? TONY WILLIAMS
