‘Lose the booze’ on the Patriots train, says T Dry run. Transit Police on the lookout for alcohol, banned goods on the Keolis train to Foxborough. Before the MBTA’s special Patriots train was set to depart South Station Thursday night en route to the game of the season, the transit agency was warning revelers how not to have their season opener fun deflated. “Lose the booze,” the T tweeted. No booze whatsoever, according to MBTA policy. Not even unopened containers. “For these particular trains, the consumption
of alcohol in our experience lends itself to rowdy behavior,” said Transit Police Lt. Richard Sullivan in an interview. “We just can’t tolerate it. It’s not going to be allowed and it’s a very well-thoughtout — and in my personal opinion a very sound — policy.” The T also prohibits riders from carrying items on trains that are banned at Gillette Stadium, per NFL rules. The reason, said Sullivan, also comes from experience. “When [passengers] found out on the train that they were in possession of items that they would not be allowed to bring, they just left them everywhere,” he told Metro. According to the rules,

bags brought to the game need to be made of clear plastic — for example, the NFL-branded clear plastic totes. Or, you know, Ziploc bags. Also permitted, according to league’s website: small bags that are “about the size of a hand.” Gillette also keeps its own list of banned items, which include beach
balls, unmanned aircraft systems (drones) and battery-operated heated jackets. Another warning from the NFL: Don’t bring the wrong seat cushion. “Non-approved seat cushions include large traditional seat cushions that have pockets, zippers, compartments, or covers. Please see your club guest services office to have your seat cushion examined,” the NFL website reads. The T has been running trains to the stadium for those looking to avoid traffic and parking or the hazards of drunk driving since it opened in 2002. Tickets for the special game-day trains cost $15 round-trip. Find them at commuter rail kiosks or
on the MBTA app. MBTA Commuter Rail operator Keolis runs a pair of special Patriots trains to Foxborough; one departs from South Station, the other from Providence. During the regular season, between 1,500 and 2,200 passengers ride the trains per game, said Keolis spokesman Mac Daniel. Tickets have sold out, but not in the past few years, Daniel told Metro. “Highest ridership on the Pats Train tends to be in November or December when the weather turns bad and tailgating becomes tougher,” Daniel said in an email. State Police charged two men with kidnapping after a woman jumped out of their moving car and took off running in Newburyport. A driver flagged down a trooper working a construction detail and told them that a woman had bailed out of a car on Route 95 south at about 6:46 p.m. on Tuesday. State Police found a woman walking on Route 113. The driver of the 2014 Ford Focus she jumped out of had pulled over. Troopers rolled up on the car and determined that James Poretta, 52, of Peabody and Joseph Poretta, 55, had thrown the woman into the car against her will. Joseph, the passenger, was charged with kidnapping and assault to commit a felony. James, the driver, was charged with kidnapping and assault. NATE HOMAN

The victim found at the scene suffered
gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead, according to police. He has not been identified. The incident is under investigation, police said. Those with information are asked to contact the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or text the word TIP to 27463. Frozen. NFL boss Roger Goodell’s mug, carved out of a big block of ice, is on display. Frost Ice Lounge, the big refrigerated pub in Faneuil Hall, has put the NFL’s antihero Commissioner Roger Goodell “ON ICE,” the icy watering hole said. “In honor of Brady’s vindication and all the madness surrounding tomorrow night’s game, Frost is sculpting a nearly life-sized ice replica of Mr. Goodell feeling shame for his unjust accusations,” Frost said in an email. “Mr. Goodell tried to put Tom Brady ON ICE for the first 4 games of the 2015 NFL season and justice has prevailed allowing the 4X Super Bowl champ to suit up this Thursday, Sept. 10 in the season opener vs.
Pittsburgh. “Frost Ice Loft in Faneuil Hall is ‘not satisfied’ with the treatment of its star quarterback from the leader of the NFL and is supporting Brady and the Pats on opening night by putting Roger Goodell ON ICE.” Frost will be displaying the ice sculpture of Mr. Goodell “sitting on a block of ice with the entire Frost Ice Loft staff decked out in Patriots gear celebrating the opener and letting everyone know not to mess with #12.” It wasn’t immediately clear how long the commissioner-shaped ice cube would be on display in the lounge, but a manager told Metro it would be there at least through the weekend. Want to pay your respects? Tickets are $12 for grown-ups and $6 for kids.

Merkel says Facebook needs to do more against racist posts German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Facebook to do more against racist comments and hate posts, in comments due to be published in a regional newspaper on Friday. Germany is expecting a record-breaking influx of refugees this year. Politicians and celebrities have voiced concern about a rise of xenophobic comments in German on Facebook and other social media platforms because of the refugee crisis. “When people stir up sedition on social networks using their real name, it’s not only the state that has to act, but also Facebook as a company should do something against these paroles,” Merkel told regional newspaper Rheinische Post. She said Facebook already had the necessary code of conduct, but there was a lack of control and enforcement. “The rules need to be implemented,” Merkel said. REUTERS

White House: US to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees Help. It is the first specific commitment the U.S. has made toward increasing its acceptance of refugees. President Barack Obama has directed his administration to prepare to take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year, the White House said on Thursday. Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the United States has taken in 1,500 refugees, with 300 more expected to be cleared by October. But refugee advocates and some members of Congress say taking in an additional 10,000 refugees does not go far enough toward addressing the humanitarian crisis triggered by the war, which has prompted a massive refugee influx into Europe. In a letter distributed to House Democrats and seen by Reuters, Democratic Representative David Cicilline asked Obama to accommodate 65,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. Religious groups have called for the United States to accept 100,000

Syrian refugees. European countries have taken in waves of migrants fleeing violence. Germany allowed 20,000 in over the weekend and is preparing for 800,000 this year. Melanie Nezer, vice president of HIAS, a global refugee advocacy group, said allowing 10,000 more refugees from Syria is not an adequate response to the crisis at hand. The United States is conducting airstrikes in Syria as part of its effort to fight against Islamic State. The United States currently admits annually a total of 70,000 refugees from around the world, and is due to increase that total by 5,000 for the fiscal year starting in October. White House spokes-
Republicans speak out about the idea of taking in additional refugees. •
Senior Republican Sens. Bob Corker and Lindsey Graham have said they are open to the idea of allowing more refugees, as long as they are subjected to security screenings.
man Josh Earnest would not say whether the 10,000 Syrians would be a part of or in addition to that total. Earnest said national security was a top concern for admitting Syrians, a country rife with anti-American militants, noting that intensive security screening for refugees could take up to 18 months. “I do feel confident in telling you that the president will not sign off on a process that cuts corners when it comes to the basic safety and security of the American people and the U.S. homeland,” Earnest told reporters. The additional background checks and processing will require a “significant financial commitment” from Congress, Earnest said. REUTERS

US urged to tighten cybersecurity to counter Chinese hacking
The United States must beef up cybersecurity against Chinese hackers targeting a broad range of U.S. interests to raise the cost to China of engaging in such activities, America’s top intelligence official said on Thursday. The testimony by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper before a congressional committee added to pressure on Beijing over its conduct in cyberspace just weeks before Chinese President Xi Jinping makes a state visit to Washington. Presenting a dire assessment of global cyberthreats, Clapper said China and Russia posed the most advanced cyberthreats but that Iran and
North Korea could also cause serious disruptions despite having less-sophisticated technology. The Obama administration is considering targeted sanctions against Chinese individuals and companies for cyberattacks against U.S. commercial targets, several U.S. officials have said. Chinese hackers have also been implicated in the massive hacking of the U.S. government’s personnel office disclosed this year. Two breaches of security clearance applications exposed the personal data of more than 20 million federal employees. REUTERS

Google said it would roll out Android Pay, a onetouch payment app on Android devices, in more than 1 million locations in the United States. The payment service can be used through Android devices with near-field communication technology and Google’s KitKat 4.4+ operating system. Android Pay will compete with Apple’s Apple Pay in the mobile payments market, which research firm IDC estimates will be $1 trillion in 2017. Honda gets California approval for self-driving cars on roads
A police officer shot and killed a man who was carrying a hand grenade when he emerged from his home in Kansas City, Missouri, after a 12-hour standoff with authorities, police said. The grenade was later determined not to be live, according to police. The man had barricaded himself in his home on Wednesday morning and made threats against Jackson County deputies who were there to serve an eviction notice, according to the Kansas City Police Department, which did not release the man’s name. Honda has received a permit from the state of California to drive its autonomous vehicles on public streets, joining companies ranging from Google to Volkswagen in testing the fast-growing technology. The California Department of Motor Vehicles on its website listed Honda as the most recent of 10 companies that had received the self-driving permits as of Friday. Other companies already approved include Daimler’s Mercedes Benz, Tesla Motors, Nissan and BMW.
Fiat Chrysler to recall 1.06M trucks over steering glitch
FCA US, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is recalling about 1.06 million of its Ram trucks in the United States to fix a steering wheel defect that may cause an air bag to deploy inadvertently. The company said an internal investigation discovered that these trucks may have steering-wheel wiring harnesses that wear out because of contact with a spring. Such wear may cause a short-circuit that may result in the inadvertent deployment of the driver-side air bag.

Feast on this
Feeling the pressure of an overabundance of great, buzzworthy TV? Narrowing down what you should be adding to your DVR queue each fall is tough. So why not cater your TV watching to your tastes? Sometimes, you want something big and meaty to chew on all night, and sometimes you’re more in the mood for something light and fluffy. To help you decide on your evening meals, here’s our menu for all the new shows you can watch this fall. LISA WEIDENFELD
Comfort food When you want to spend time watching people (or puppets) who look familiar, these are the shows to veg out with.
‘The Muppets’
‘The Grinder’
There aren’t many creative properties as beloved as the Muppets, who return for a new show this fall. The premise: It’s an “Office”-style mockumentary about the filming of a late-night talk show Miss Piggy is hosting. Backstage high jinks abound, and the Internet was afire a few weeks ago with the news that Kermit and Piggy had split and Kermit was seeing a new pig. Is all of this a bit too 2015 for a group of puppets from the ’70s? You’ll have to decide for yourself. ABC

Rob Lowe’s career has taken a lot of turns over the years, but recently he’s been having fun making fun of his own sheer attractiveness, as he did on “Parks and Recreation” and now on “The Grinder.” He plays an actor best known for portraying an over-the-top TV lawyer, who has since decided to move back to his hometown to help out his actual lawyer brother, who’s played by Fred Savage. Not surprisingly, Savage is not thrilled by the presence of his older, famous sibling. FOX
‘Life in Pieces’
‘Rosewood’
Sitcoms about families are nothing new, but this show debuts a new way of making sure everyone in the family gets equal attention. Each episode is split into four vignettes, with each one following a different member of the family, from the adult children, played by Thomas Sadoski, Colin Hanks and Betsy Brandt, to the parents, played by Dianne Wiest and James Brolin. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when you have a group of pros like these in charge. CBS

‘Supergirl’ The latest superhero show is finally, for once, starring a woman. Supergirl is a little Ally McBealesque — Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers (Clark Kent’s cousin) is smart and competent, but lacking a little bit in confidence. Fitting, then, that Calista Flockhart returns to network television as her “Devil Wears Prada”channeling boss. Though the show has its rom-com side, it also devotes a whole scene to discussing whether “girl” is really an appropriate name for its heroine. CBS
MONDAY, OCT. 26, 8:30 P.M., CBS
‘Crazy Ex Girlfriend’ This dark dramedy is exploring what leads someone to fit the stereotype of the “crazy ex girlfriend.” Oh, and the crazy ex frequently imagines that parts of her life are a musical. Have you already stopped reading? Hopefully not, because the show, at least in the pilot sent to critics, is pulling off that mix of genres perfectly, with music comedy star Rachel Bloom stepping into her first starring TV role with confidence. It might be the most unusual show on this fall.

HULU
Hulu seems to like dark comedies for its original programming, between this and the catty “Difficult People.” The show stars Michaela Watkins (“Saturday Night Live”). Here, she’s a therapist trying to adjust to the changes in her life after her husband leaves her and she and her teenage daughter have to move in with her possibly suicidal brother, who created a popular dating site. It’s a lot of premise, but the show is mostly about hanging out with their struggling, but always funny, family.

John Stamos returns to TV in this show about a playboy restaurant owner who discovers, in one of the all-time weirdest days, that he’s both a father and a grandfather, as his previously unknown son has a baby. Can he adjust to being a family man? Stamos is very much playing to type, but when that’s as charming as it is here, we’re not going to complain. Extra credit here for the welcome presence of Paget Brewster, who plays the mother of his son, and perhaps the lost love of his life (of course).

just within the law and showed real confidence. They turned swagger into a political weapon. Nelson and his subjects — calm and collected, even when detailing the murder of Fred Hampton by what was effectively a government death squad — touch on the necessary, and sometimes ignored, sides: their breakfast program, their work within communities and their sometimes, not always, reluctant allowance of women and other races into (or at least around) their fold. (Women take up about half the talking heads, and they speak about how, by the end of the ’60s, they took up a large portion of an organization whose iconic image was armed manly men in leather jackets and berets.) This ultimately isn’t the last word on the Panthers, but it’s equal parts exposition and fire.
When it comes to his stand-up shows, Anthony Jeselnik is not willing to make compromises — even if he’s performing in front of thousands at a Funny or Die festival. “I would never accept a job where there are things I couldn’t do,” he says. “They might recommend things, they might say, ‘Try to keep it a little nicer, try to keep it a little less edgy.’ But I of course will not do that.” Jeselnik, who you’ve seen hosting Comedy Central roasts (including one of Donald Trump) and NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” is on tour with Funny or Die’s Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival, alongside Aziz Ansari, Amy Schumer, Nick Kroll and a long list of other notable comics. We chatted with him about watching his friends perform — and not having a plan B.
So when you’re told to tone it down a bit, does that make you want to go even edgier? I only have one speed. That’s to be as edgy as

possible. If you told me to be more edgy, it would be impossible. I don’t have a plan B — I just have this one thing that I do.
Being part of a tour like Oddball versus hosting a show like “Last Comic Standing” — which do you prefer? A mix of both is necessary because one feeds the other. I’m on TV, so people come and see me when I perform live. And the thing I like about performing live is no one can tell me what to do. I’m my own boss; I have no censors. I can do whatever I want — and you can’t do that on television. And Oddball is great because with stand-up, with comedy, you’re always on your own. With Oddball, it’s a chance for all of us to hang out.
Oh, I won’t watch a single performance. I will do my set and then I’ll go in the

Who do you usually test things out on to see if you’re going too far? Stand-up is so different than asking a friend, “What do you think about this joke?” If you do it’s usually a disaster. They just look at you like you’re crazy. You have to find out in front of a real crowd.
back and read a book.
You really won’t watch anyone’s? I just don’t watch that much comedy. For me to really enjoy comedy anymore, [the comedian] has to be a genius, or be my friend. So maybe I’ll catch a couple acts here or there. I might watch Amy, Aziz or Nick Kroll, since they’re my friends. But for the most part — I’m doing 18 of these things. You have to pace yourself. You have to go in the back and read a book.

Joe Pisapia’s FanDuel NFL Week 1 lineup picks: Quarterback: I briefly flirted with Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck, but their road matchups are slight turn-offs, even in cash games. Their respective salaries also made them even more unappealing (north of $9K each). Over the last few weeks, Sam Bradford has looked very comfortable in Chip Kelly’s high-volume offense. Playing in Atlanta, in a dome, against a solid defense, Bradford saves me another $500, which allows me to upgrade at another position without a drop-off in QB production. FINAL SELECTION: Sam Bradford $7,500

Running backs: At one point, I was willing to pay all the way up for Adrian Peterson at $9,200, but with so much time to think about it, doing this now seems unnecessary. I wanted to stay in the top tier for my RB1 and Eddie Lacy is in a spot where I feel most comfortable dropping down in price. FINAL SELECTION: Eddie Lacy $8,500
Wide receivers: After my top choice in Jordy Nelson went down with a season-ending injury, Julio Jones was the obvious pivot for me. Once I turned the page to Bradford, Jordan Matthews was the logical choice. Kelvin Benjamin left the mix due to injury and Andre Johnson was hovering in my mind, but I was looking toward the end zone. Is there a more maligned player who scored 10 TDs last year than Mike Wallace? FINAL SELECTIONS: Julio Jones $9,000/Jordan Matthews $6,800/Mike Wallace $6,400
Tight end: Peyton Manning has a history of using the tight end in his offense and Owen Daniels should at least be a target in the end zone. His track record makes him worth the upgrade of a few hundred dollars. FINAL SELECTION: Owen Daniels $5,500

Sherman backs Patriots The Patriots got some support from an unlikely source this week as outspoken Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said that the Patriots are far from cheaters. “Everybody does their things a little differently, but at the end of the day, it’s handled between the lines,” Sherman told ESPN. “And if they man up and they beat you straight up, they beat you straight up. You can say they knew your plays or they watched this or they watched that, but a lot of times if you watch film good enough, you find good indicators. You find things. So if you’re studying the game the right way, you go out there understanding what plays are coming, and you know when the plays are coming. But can you execute? Can 11 guys stop the other 11 from executing the play?”

Over the last seven months, I’ve expressed my dismay with the National Football League, and more specifically, commissioner Roger Goodell, for his handling of Deflategate. Dismay is one word to describe it. Here are some others: anger, frustration, indignation. You get the point. What the NFL did to Tom Brady is nothing short of a complete embarrassment. And when Judge Richard Berman chose to revoke Brady’s four-game suspension last week after several settlement hearings, Goodell and his posse decided to launch a smear campaign against the New England Patriots, giving both ESPN and Sports Illustrated enough fuel to force them to go back in time and report “new” findings in Spygate. Yes, Spygate. In 2015. Something that was a story in 2007, that the Patriots were punished for. But the NFL is now trying to make the world re-live it, in order to justify its original over-the-top Deflategate punishment, for which they have no direct evidence of anything illegal happening. That’s why Judge Berman put the hammer on Goodell. But it’s also why the commissioner wants this Spygate story out there. And why — on the same day that story was released — there’s also a story portraying a leaguewide suspicion that the Patriots are always trying to spy on their opponents. Like Deflategate, none of it is based on facts. Most of it is based on assumptions. All of it is based on paranoia. After giving the results of his own personal Deflategate science experiment in January

TOWARD PATS — the week before the Super Bowl — Patriots coach Bill Belichick answered a question about Spygate and opened up like never before. “Look, the guy’s giving signals out in front of 80,000 people, OK? he said. “So we filmed him giving signals out in front of 80,000 people, like there were a lot of other teams doing at that time too, OK? But, forget about that. If we were wrong, then we’ve been disciplined for that. “The guy’s in front of 80,000 people, added a perturbed Belichick, as if he wanted to smack some common sense into the reporter who continued to press him about it. “Eighty-thousand people saw it. Everybody’s sidelines saw it. Everybody sees our guy [giving signals] in front of 80,000 people. I mean, there he is. As if to stress, “Everybody’s doing it! Fact of the matter is, the Patriots were just better at using it than anyone else. Much like they’re seemingly better than the rest of the league at the everyday gamesmanship that comes with being in a

professional, competitive, win-at-all-costs environment. If you’re using the word “cheater when describing the Patriots after reading these Spygate stories and seeing the Deflategate drama, then perhaps you should watch the NFL Network feature, “Do Your Job: Bill
Belichick and the 2014 New England Patriots. It’s there where you’ll find the games are ultimately won with both preparation and execution, another thing the Patriots have been better than the rest of the league at for the last 15 years. But I won’t lie. All these emotions, all this anger, all this garbage has made me embrace the Patriots’ new bad-boy image. To the point where I actually want them to do everything they’ve been accused of. The Patriots should videotape opposing teams’ signals. They should film walkthroughs, bug visiting locker rooms, deflate footballs. I need a 19-0 season from the bad boys of the NFL! Hold on. Let me to take a few deep breaths here. OK, relax. You get my point. I’m embracing the hate. And an undefeated season is unrealistic for a team that lost a few of their best defensive players and begins the season with a banged-up offense. But another Super Bowl championship will do. See you in Santa Clara in February.
