After a very public game of phone tag, New York City’s top cop finally got ahold of pro tennis star James Blake to apologize for his mistaken arrest. “I spoke to Mr. Blake a short time ago and personally apologized for [Wednesday’s] incident,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said in a state-

ment late Thursday. Earlier in the day, Bratton told reporters that he has tried to reach out to Blake to personally apologize, and to extend said apologies on behalf of Mayor Bill de Blasio, but had not been able to reach the athlete. Bratton added that Blake volunteered to speak to Internal Affairs detectives looking into the arresting officers’ actions. “Mr. Blake said he would like to meet with the mayor and me at a future date, which we would be agreeable to,” Bratton wrote. At an earlier press conference at police headquar-

ters, Bratton pushed back on the idea that Blake, who is biracial, was targeted by the five arresting officers, who are white, on account of racial bias. Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters that the actual suspect who officers mistook Blake for, shared many physical traits with the tennis player. NYPD declined to release a photo of the alleged suspect, who was eventually arrested for credit card fraud in the vicinity of the midtown Manhattan hotel Blake was staying at. “They look like twins,” Boyce said. mistook Blake for the suspect, which led to the five officers charging toward and arresting Blake. Bratton told reporters that a review of surveillance video from the hotel showed Blake did not appear to resist arrest, and described the way with which it went down as “inappropriate.” The officer, who has

not been identified, was placed on desk duty shortly after the incident. “The use of force is such that I’m comfortable that it’s in the best interest of the department to place the officer on modified assignment,” Bratton said. Blake told ABC on Thursday morning before Bratton’s comments that he was still shaken up by the arrest. “We all need to be held accountable for our actions,” Blake said. “Police as well.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

Tickets. 80K New Yorkers to see pope in Central Park City officials said a total of 80,000 people who either called in or registered online between Sept. 3 and 7 will get to watch the pope as he travels along Central Park West Drive on later this month. More than 93,000 New Yorkers had sought out tickets to witness Pope Francis’s Central Park procession on Sept. 25.

The ticketed excursion through New York’s most famous park is scheduled to take place before his Friday Mass at Madison Square Garden to an

It’s unclear how the

city will prevent resale of the tickets, which will be distributed after the winners have been notified between Sept. 10 and 14. On Monday, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter decried the profiteering off of tickets to Pope Francis’ events in the city after his stop in New York after one individual offered a set of four seats for $1,000 on eBay. Manhattan D.A. to aid clearing rape kit backlogs Untested. The D.A.’s Office is awarding $38 million to clear years of untested rape kits in 20 states. Twenty states across the nation may be able to eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits thanks to a $38 million grant awarded through the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Manhattan’s District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. announced today that 32 jurisdictions will receive awards ranging from $97,000 to $2 million to test over 56,000 rape kits. “These grants will generate leads in thousands of cases across the country, some of them decades old,” Vance said. “Tackling the national rape kit backlog means addressing a women’s and human rights issue that has been ignored for far too long. We are refusing to accept that some criminal justice problems are just too big – too ingrained, too controversial, too expensive – to solve.” New York is not one of the recipients as the state cleared a backlog of 17,000 rape kits from 2000

to 2003, resulting in 49 indictments connected to unsolved cases in Manhattan alone, according to the D.A.’s reports. “By helping to solve sexual assault cases in other cities, we are ultimately addressing and preventing sexual assault in New York City – a critical component of ensuring that we remain the safest big city in America,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. In addition, Vice President Joe Biden together with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance’s (BJA) $41 million initiative toward ending the backlog. Some recipients from the Manhattan D.A.’s office will receive training and technical assistance from BJA. Although both agencies coordinated so there wouldn’t be any duplication of services, nine jurisdictions will receive funding for both. “For anyone who has felt isolated and afraid, left out and left behind as a result of a sexual crime, our message is clear,” said Attorney General Lynch. “We will not forget you. We will not abandon you. You are not alone.” KARINA E. CUEVAS @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Blind woman rescued by riders from subway tracks Commuters saved a blind woman after she fell onto the subway tracks at the Wall Street 2/3 stop Thursday morning. According to the MTA, the woman was walking down the stairs when she thought a train was in the station and stepped off the platform falling into the southbound side of the tracks. White House: US to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees Help. It is the first specific commitment the U.S. has made toward increasing its acceptance of refugees. President Barack Obama has directed his administration to prepare to take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year, the White House said on Thursday. Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the United States has taken in 1,500 refugees, with 300 more expected to be cleared by October. But refugee advocates and some members of Congress say taking in an additional 10,000 refugees

does not go far enough toward addressing the humanitarian crisis triggered by the war, which has prompted a massive refugee influx into Europe. In a letter distributed to House Democrats and seen by Reuters, Democratic Representative David Cicilline asked Obama to accommodate 65,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. Religious groups have called for the United States to accept 100,000 Syrian refugees. European countries have taken in waves of migrants fleeing violence. Germany allowed 20,000 in over the weekend and is preparing for 800,000 this year. Melanie Nezer, vice president of HIAS, a global refugee advocacy group, said allowing 10,000 more

refugees from Syria is not an adequate response to the crisis at hand. The United States is conducting airstrikes in Syria as part of its effort to fight against Islamic State. The United States currently admits annually a total of 70,000 refugees from around the world, and is

due to increase that total by 5,000 for the fiscal year starting in October. White House spokesman Josh Earnest would not say whether the 10,000 Syrians would be a part of or in addition to that total. Earnest said national security was a top con-

cern for admitting Syrians, a country rife with anti-American militants, noting that intensive security screening for refugees could take up to 18 months. “I do feel confident in telling you that the president will not sign off on a process that cuts corners

when it comes to the basic safety and security of the American people and the U.S. homeland,” Earnest told reporters. The additional background checks and processing will require a “significant financial commitment” from Congress, Earnest said. REUTERS

THE CRACKPOT JACKPOT My younger daughter grew up fixated on Alice in Wonderland. Maybe because her name is Ali. But we watched the movie, read the book and played at make-believe tumbles down the rabbit hole so many times I began desperately trying to interest her in other tales. “Hey look, Peter Pan!” I’d say with a broad grin. No response. “A Little Princess!” I’d say, beaming. Nope. “I don’t suppose you’d be interested in ‘A Farewell to Arms’?” “Daaaad,” she’d say, “I just want to hear about a crazy place where there are no rules and nothing makes sense!” “Have you ever dealt with an airline’s customer service department?” It comes to mind because I think many voters are staring into the looking glass of 2016 and seeing growing insanity on the other side. Repubs (when they are not savaging Hillary Clinton) rage about Bernie Sanders, who rushes around like the March Hare, spouting liberal talking points as if he is leading a conga line down Main Street to the steady thump of “Get Up, Stand Up.” The most dedicated members of the opposition would sum up each candidate in a phrase: “What a crackpot!” Yet Trump is reigning in the

GOP polls, and Sanders is rising fast against Clinton, who started with so many advantages that political analysts once gave Sanders no chance. So how is this happening? Trump and Sanders are saying what they think — loud and proud. They are taking daring (some would say foolish) positions even as pundits howl. And, importantly, the more-mainstream challengers just continue working their focus groups, grinning like Cheshire cats and saying almost nothing — refusing to take real stances, right now, on issues that matter. Once that was the way to victory, but I’m not so sure anymore. I think we have passed through a mirror and on this side authenticity matters, no matter how wild. And that has left many of the old-fashioned pols staring at the numbers muttering, “Curiouser and curiouser.”

US urged to tighten cybersecurity to counter Chinese hacking

The United States must beef up cybersecurity against Chinese hackers targeting a broad range of U.S. interests to raise the cost to China of engaging in such activities, America’s top intelligence official said on Thursday. The testimony by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper before a congressional committee added to pressure on Beijing over its conduct in cyberspace just weeks before Chinese President Xi Jinping makes a state visit to Washington. Presenting a dire assessment of global cyberthreats, Clapper said China and Russia posed the most advanced cyberthreats but that Iran and

North Korea could also cause serious disruptions despite having less-sophisticated technology. The Obama administration is considering targeted sanctions against Chinese individuals and companies for cyberattacks against U.S. commercial targets, several U.S. officials have said. Chinese hackers have also been implicated in the massive hacking of the U.S. government’s personnel office disclosed this year. Two breaches of security clearance applications exposed the personal data of more than 20 million federal employees. REUTERS

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin and Amazon.com / GETTY IMAGES

United Launch Alliance, the biggest supplier of rockets for the U.S. military, will ramp up rocket engine work with Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos’ space company, the companies said on Thursday. The move comes as ULA, a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing, is considering a $2 billion cash buyout offer from Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. Aerojet also is developing an alternative engine for ULA’s nextgeneration rocket, called Vulcan. ULA and Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, said last year that the companies would jointly develop a liquid natural gas-fueled rocket engine to replace the Russianmade RD-180 engines that currently power ULA’s workhorse Atlas 5 booster. ULA can no longer import the Russian engines for U.S. military launches, the bulk of its business, under a congressional ban enacted in response to Russia’s involvement in Ukraine. Aerojet is working on another engine, called the AR1, though its development is at least 16 months behind Blue Origin’s BE-4, ULA Chief Executive Tory Bruno said at a congressional

ULA, Lockheed, Boeing and Aerojet have declined to comment about the reported buyout offer. However, on Thursday ULA and Blue Origin said they had agreed to expand the production capabilities of the BE-4, which is targeted to make its debut flight in 2019. Bezos is scheduled to be in Florida on Tuesday to unveil plans for its own rocket manufacturing plant and launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, located just south of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Feast on this

Feeling the pressure of an overabundance of great, buzzworthy TV? Narrowing down what you should be adding to your DVR queue each fall is tough. So why not cater your TV watching to your tastes? Sometimes, you want something big and meaty to chew on all night, and sometimes you’re more in the mood for something light and fluffy. To help you decide on your evening meals, here’s our menu for all the new shows you can watch this fall. LISA WEIDENFELD

Sometimes you’re just looking for a good time. Try these for tart — but occasionally hard-hitting — takes on a range of unusual topics.

‘The Muppets’

‘Supergirl’

There aren’t many creative properties as beloved as the Muppets, who return for a new show this fall. The premise: It’s an “Office”-style mockumentary about the filming of a late-night talk show Miss Piggy is hosting. Backstage high jinks abound, and the Internet was afire a few weeks ago with the news that Kermit and Piggy had split and Kermit was seeing a new pig. Is all of this a bit too 2015 for a group of puppets from the ’70s? You’ll have to decide for yourself.

The latest superhero show is finally, for once, starring a woman. Supergirl is a little Ally McBealesque — Melissa Benoist’s Kara Danvers (Clark Kent’s cousin) is smart and competent, but lacking a little bit in confidence. Fitting, then, that Calista Flockhart returns to network television as her “Devil Wears Prada”-channeling boss. Though the show has its rom-com side, it also devotes a whole scene to discussing whether “girl” is really an appropriate name for its heroine.

‘Life in Pieces’

‘Crazy Ex Girlfriend’

Sitcoms about families are nothing new, but this show debuts a new way of making sure everyone in the family gets equal attention. Each episode is split into four vignettes, with each one following a different member of the family, from the adult children, played by Thomas Sadoski, Colin Hanks and Betsy Brandt, to the parents, played by Dianne Wiest and James Brolin. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when you have a group of pros like these in charge.

This dark dramedy is exploring what leads someone to fit the stereotype of the “crazy ex girlfriend.” Oh, and the crazy ex frequently imagines that parts of her life are a musical. Have you already stopped reading? Hopefully not, because the show, at least in the pilot sent to critics, is pulling off that mix of genres perfectly, with music comedy star Rachel Bloom stepping into her first starring TV role with confidence. It might be the most unusual show on this fall.

Rob Lowe’s career has taken a lot of turns over the years, but recently he’s been having fun making fun of his own sheer attractiveness, as he did on “Parks and Recreation” and now on “The Grinder.” He plays an actor best known for portraying an over-the-top TV lawyer, who has since decided to move back to his hometown to help out his actual lawyer brother, who’s played by Fred Savage. Not surprisingly, Savage is not thrilled by the presence of his older, famous sibling.

Hulu seems to like dark comedies for its original programming, between this and the catty “Difficult People.” The show stars Michaela Watkins (“Saturday Night Live”). Here, she’s a therapist trying to adjust to the changes in her life after her husband leaves her and she and her teenage daughter have to move in with her possibly suicidal brother, who created a popular dating site. It’s a lot of premise, but the show is mostly about hanging out with their struggling, but always funny, family.

‘Rosewood’

‘Grandfathered’

“Brilliant, eccentric man outsmarts everyone around him” gets another turn with this new procedural, with Morris Chestnut starring as the titular Rosewood, who runs a private, high-tech autopsy business, and is brought in to consult with the local police department. He’s more “Castle” than “House,” but with a twist: He’s got a series of serious, life-threatening health issues, none of which affect his day-to-day functioning, but which you can expect to arise at dramatic moments.

John Stamos returns to TV in this show about a playboy restaurant owner who discovers, in one of the all-time weirdest days, that he’s both a father and a grandfather, as his previously unknown son has a baby. Can he adjust to being a family man? Stamos is very much playing to type, but when that’s as charming as it is here, we’re not going to complain. Extra credit here for the welcome presence of Paget Brewster, who plays the mother of his son, and perhaps the lost love of his life (of course).

For the carnivores If you’re looking to really indulge in your TV time, and you like your steak rare and bloody, these are the shows for you.

‘Bastard Executioner’ Fans of “Sons of Anarchy” should check this one out, since it comes from “SOA” creator Kurt Sutter. This one seems likely to be just as dark and gory as the first, but with a big change: It’s set in the medieval era, which we assume means significantly fewer motorcycles appear. Katey Sagal and Stephen Moyer of “True Blood” star, with newcomer Lee Jones taking on the lead role. FX

‘Fargo’ While people might have been a little hesitant about the idea of a “Fargo” TV show, the success of the first season put those concerns to rest. The new season is set in the ’70s, and features Patrick Wilson as a stoic lawman, accompanied by Ted Danson. There are other familiar faces, from Kirsten Dunst to Brad Garrett, but we won’t spoil who the bad guys are. FX

‘Scream Queens’ Not to be confused with “American Horror Story,” this new series from Ryan Murphy stars the official Scream Queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, and pays homage to the clever meta commentary of the “Scream” movies. Emma Roberts plays a sociopathic sorority queen bee, who would lead her group of girls to greatness if only they weren’t getting brutally murdered one by one. FOX

She plays an amnesiac who’s discovered naked in a bag in the middle of Times Square. It’s really too bad she can’t remember anything — those tattoos are clues about potential crimes, and she and her FBI keepers have to decode them. NBC

‘Time Out of Mind’ Director: Oren Moverman Stars: Richard Gere, Ben Vereen Rating: R

••••• “Time Out of Mind” is a movie about the homeless, but that imparts too much import upon it, and almost certainly implies sentimentality. Movie hobos tend to be holy fools, but Richard Gere’s George is closer to Mickey Rourke’s Randy “The Ram” in “The Wrestler”: an oldtimer has-been with a lifetime of dire mistakes to which the film only ever half-alludes. He even has an estranged, though even angrier, daughter (Jena Malone), who seems to have entirely erased him from her life by the time he makes hesitant but creepy overtures to re-enter it. That plot thread never domi-

Richard Gere hides in the background as a homeless man in “Time Out of Mind.” IFC FILMS nates what remains an episodic character study that moves, if at all, in circles. Usually all George is trying to do is procure an always skeezy excuse for a bed, along the way picking up brief encounters with lowly nurses and security guards and the like, who leave his life as quickly as they entered it.

For the most part, George is one of the untold invisibles in the city, and filmmaker Oren Moverman (“The Messenger,” “Rampart”) almost treats him that way. Sometimes you have to find him inside busy frames, which are usually shot from a remove or behind glass storefronts or fences. Gere, perhaps unexpectedly, fits right in. It’s not a movie star ostentatiously dirtying himself up, nor is it a movie star calling attention to how he’s not entirely dirtying himself up. His performance is largely reactive, silent. Only when he runs afoul of a fellow hobo, played with hungry verve by Ben Vereen — a stage god rarely given a chance to work his magic in movies — does the movie fill with endless and boundless chatter. Mostly it stays minimalist, rough and uncompromising, so much so that it earns its nice ending. MP

••••• We may be too hard on romcoms, and with reasonable cause. They can, even the better ones, feel homogenous and programmatic — comfort food that at their worst causes cultural indigestion. “Sleeping with Other People,” like “Trainwreck,” storms out of the gate feeling like a radical take on the genre. Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis play sex addicts who once hooked up in college and reunite when both are older. They decide that, obvious

Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis try not to hook up in “Sleeping with Other People.” IFC FILMS sparkage aside, they should stay in the friend zone. Why? Because there wouldn’t be a movie otherwise. Except there would be a movie otherwise, because both Lainey and Jake are incredibly messed up. And they’re both jerks — enjoyably articulate a—holes. Writer-director Leslye

Headland (“Bachelorette”) knows her rom-com cliches and tries to subvert and embrace them in equal measure. This is all heading for a more classical ending. That’s not a bad thing, especially given the sharp banter and willingness to go to weird, dark and quietly subversive places. MP

••••• MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Despite the vitriol often heaped his way, there are many things M. Night Shyamalan does well — indeed, better than most. He’s strong with slow, creeping mood, and not only when building suspense sequences. He knows the value of offscreen space. His sincerity often curdles into unintentional camp, but when he deals with overcoming trauma, he often

achieves real transcendence. Almost none of these talents are what make “The Visit” as rollicking as it is. In fact, the things that it does well are things that have generally, for him, gone disastrously, namely comedy and quick footing. But “The Visit,” in which he crashes the party of cheapie found-footage horror (though it’s technically a mock-doc), is funny, or at least fun. The film-within-thefilm is made by two kids — aspiring filmmaker teen Rebecca (Olivia DeJonge), who drops terms like “mise en scene” like it’s hot, and her younger brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) — as they shlep off to the grandparents for a weeklong hoedown. Their elders seem like typical, mildly demented olds. Then they start acting weirder. Soon it appears something, something maybe super-

natural and Shyamalanian, is afoot. There’s a twist — the director’s first real one since 2004’s “The Village” — but it arrives around the last half hour, and it’s a gentler, goofier, almost subversive one than the ones that made the director’s name. Thing is, Shyamalan doesn’t quite know what to do with it. It’s downright weird watching one of his films not particularly structured around Hitchcock knockoff set pieces. Some of the attempted scares are sloppy and, come the so-so ending, settle for over-the-top shocks rather than beautifully constructed menace. “The Visit” still works, especially as a horror that recognizes the build is more important than the delivery. If Shyamalan finds a way to marry what works here to the other things he does well elsewhere, look out.

Death Cab for Cutie: rebuilt, not broken Band member Nick Harmer tells us why change has been good for the band. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

The title of Death Cab for Cutie’s eighth album, “Kintsugi,” is telling. Not only is “Kintsugi” the Japanese artform of crafting new pottery out of broken clay pieces, it’s also representative of the band in its new form: For the first time in 18 years they are without producer and guitarist Chris Walla. Bassist Nick Harmer opens up about this transitional period for the band:

Peaceful parting For outsiders, Walla’s departure may seem abrupt, but Harmer tells us it wasn’t as dramatic as fans may assume. “I think as time went on, the longevity of the band surprised us all and it just became a time for him to really concentrate on the other side of his musical life that was important for him, which was producing records,” he says. It also gave the band the chance to work with someone new, producer Rich Costey, who has also produced records with TV On The Radio, Santigold, Foo Fighters and Jane’s Addiction, among others. “I feel like this is one of the best albums we’ve made in a long time and I really credit Rich for being the captain and steering us to that destination,” Harmer says of the relationship.

Hidden messages Honest songwriting is a cornerstone of “Kintsugi,” as it’s always been with Death Cab. With lyrics like, “Was I in your way when the cameras turned

to face you? No room in frame for two,” the album seems to be about singer Ben Gibbard’s 2012 divorce from actress Zooey Deschanel. So, is it? “Even as a bandmate, I don’t know where the line is between fact and fiction,” Harmer says. “All of Ben’s songs are inspired by things that have happened to him and the people around him, but none of the songs are ever literally what happened. He’s very good at taking feelings and weaving them into something bigger.” For all their songs, Harmer stresses that it’s more important about what it means to the listener than what it means to them.

Getting more than they’ve dreamed of Instead of seeing the band’s transitional period as draining, Harmer says they’re invigorated by it and that the band’s two new touring members — Dave Depper and Zack Rae — have brought new energy to the group. The band is gearing up to play Madison Square Garden for the first time and Harmer says they’re still pinching themselves. “It’s hard to call it a dream come true because it just feels like such a farfetched dream to have,” he says. “Sometimes a bit of change, not a lot, but a little bit of change is a good thing.”

Things to watch as Giants face Cowboys

NFL. What better way to kick off the season than with one of the biggest rivalries in football? The Giants look to snap the Cowboys’ four-game winning streak in this series, as they head to Dallas for their season opener Sunday (8:30 p.m., NBC). New York had an eventful offseason (the Jason Pierre-Paul mess) and an uneven preseason (going 2-2 and enduring touchdown droughts), so they’ll look to put the past behind them and begin their journey of trying to end their three-year playoff drought. Metro takes a look at key storylines to watch ahead of Sunday’s primetime tilt. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

exhibition game counts. Manning truly has a grasp on Ben McAdoo’s twoyear-old offense, so ultimately Big Blue’s first unit will get into the end zone. 3 things to watch for as the Jets face the Browns The first (real) game of the Todd Bowles/Mike Maccagnan era rolls into MetLife Stadium and for the first year head coach and his general manager, it is a chance to turn around a New York Jets franchise stuck in neutral the past four seasons. Their first test, Sunday against the Cleveland Browns (1 p.m., CBS), is a very winnable game. The Browns have a less than ideal quarterback situation to go alongside a defense that struggled against the run last year. Here are three things to keep an eye on:

1

Ground and pound The Browns had the league’s worst run defense last year, giving up 4.5 yards per carry and 141.6 yards per game. With Chris Ivory looking sharp in training camp and preseason as well as Bilal Powell, the Jets will want to test this revamped Browns defense early in the game. Throw some Zac Stacy into the mix and there could be a lot of running between the tackles in this game.

Chan Gailey when the two were together with the Buffalo Bills, putting up

2

Slow, methodical Fitz This will be the first regular season start for Ryan Fitzpatrick as a Jet and he is an ideal fit in this offense. He’s had success before with offensive coordinator

the best numbers of his career during that span. The idea will be for the Jets to run the ball, control the clock and methodically move the ball down the field in the passing game.

DARRELLE REVIS WILL BE BACK IN GREEN AND WHITE LEADING THE JETS SECONDARY.

Discipline The Jets were a rather average team last year in terms of penalties but they were an undisciplined bunch in crucial moments. False starts killed promising drives, offside penalties gave other teams a fresh set of downs. In Bowles, the Jets have a head coach high on discipline and accountability. This team should not be getting flagged as much. KRISTIAN DYER

Joe Pisapia’s FanDuel NFL Week 1 lineup picks: Quarterback: I briefly flirted with Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck, but their road matchups are slight turn-offs, even in cash games. Their respective salaries also made them even more unappealing (north of $9K each). Over the last few weeks, Sam Bradford has looked very comfortable in Chip Kelly’s high-volume offense. Playing in Atlanta, in a dome, against a solid defense, Bradford saves me another $500, which allows me to upgrade at another position without a drop-off in QB production. FINAL SELECTION: Sam Bradford $7,500

Running backs:

Some clarification

Marshall explains himself Brandon Marshall explained his controversial comments from this week’s episode of “Inside the NFL” on Showtime Thursday. On the show, Marshall, said that there is a view around the league that “white players” and quarterbacks are treated differently by the NFL in terms of suspensions and league rulings. At no point did Marshall say this was his belief, just a belief he feels is held based on his research after multiple conversations with players from different locker rooms. “It had nothing to do with the judge, it’s what I thought was the opinion of a bunch of players. It had nothing to do with the case, it was just our approach,” Marshall said on Thursday. “The only thing I’ll say about that whole deal, I think we all know, especially you guys more than anybody else, whenever you talk about race, whenever you talk about religion and politics publicly, it’s uncomfortable and can be tough at times.”

At one point, I was willing to pay all the way up for Adrian Peterson at $9,200, but with so much time to think about it, doing this now seems unnecessary. I wanted to stay in the top tier for my RB1 and Eddie Lacy is in a spot where I feel most comfortable dropping down in price. FINAL SELECTION: Eddie Lacy $8,500

Wide receivers: After my top choice in Jordy Nelson went down with a season-ending injury, Julio Jones was the obvious pivot for me. Once I turned the page to Bradford, Jordan Matthews was the logical choice. Kelvin Benjamin left the mix due to injury and Andre Johnson was hovering in my mind, but I was looking toward the end zone. Is there a more maligned player who scored 10 TDs last year than Mike Wallace? FINAL SELECTIONS: Julio Jones $9,000/Jordan Matthews $6,800/Mike Wallace $6,400

Tight end: Peyton Manning has a history of using the tight end in his offense and Owen Daniels should at least be a target in the end zone. His track record makes him worth the upgrade of a few hundred dollars. FINAL SELECTION: Owen Daniels $5,500

NFL. If you make a wager (not that we condone such a thing), put money on the Jets, Chargers and Colts this week. Browns at Jets (-3) The Jets may not be a playoff-caliber squad, but the Browns are destined to be among the dregs of the league this year. Cleveland lost productive TE Jordan Cameron to the Dolphins in free agency and WR Josh Gordon to a year-long substance-abuse suspension. The Jets 6th-ranked defense from last year should have no problem containing either Josh McCown or Johnny Manziel and the lack of talent

around them. The pick: Jets -3 Lions at Chargers (-2.5) The Lions were not nearly as good as their 11-5 record last year would have you believe. Detroit was 6-1 in one-score games and had a turnover ratio of +7 (these things tend to even out from year to year), and based on point differential the Lions should have only won nine games. The Chargers should be able to tame this weakened Lions defense as Philip Rivers has a slew of options at wideout, including the newly acquired Stevie Johnson, who is due for a career renaissance. The pick: Chargers -2.5 Colts (-3) at Bills The Colts come into the

2015 season as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, and they’ll open against a common playoff “sleeper” pick for this year in Buffalo. The Bills are a new-look team as they brought in Rex Ryan to take over as head coach. LeSean McCoy will be the go-to running back with Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller out of the picture. The Bills are 6-1 ATS (against the spread) as a home underdog going back to 2013. Andrew Luck is a front-runner for the MVP but the Bills defense was ranked 4th in yards allowed last season, so he’ll have his hands full on the road. The pick: Colts -3 ROBERT CRISCOLA @MetroNewYork sports@metro.us
