Boston’s biggest model ship dealer planned to auction off about $1 million in nautical goods this weekend, about half of them once owned by Donald Trump’s architect. Apparently Der Scutt, the man who designed the Donald’s Trump Tower in Manhattan, was fanatical about model boats big and small, cheap and top-of-the-
line pricey. Scutt died in 2010. The designer, with many Manhattan skyscrapers to his credit, filled three floors of his twin five-story townhouses in the Upper East Side with the collectibles. And lots of them are for sale in Boston, said Larry Lannan, owner of the Lannan Model Ship Gallery, serving office building decorators and deep-pocketed collectors in the city since 1967. Lannan said he sold Scutt about 100 model ships over the years. He used to load up his van (Lannan calls it his “Van Door Gallery”) with goods and drive to meet the architect in New York, sometimes selling the millionaire an entire cargo worth $20,000 to $30,000 at once. Scutt’s wife wasn’t a fan

of her husband’s hobby, or with his model dealers, Lannan said — he was one of many familiar with Scutt’s tastes. “She loves me now, but she wasn’t always that happy to see me,” Lannan said. The gallery typically holds auctions twice a year, and Lannan in the past has sold items once owned by wealthy moguls like the late financier J.P. Morgan. Up for grabs this time will be a 100-year-old model of the S.S. Ladywood, expected to sell for
up to $3,500. Or maybe a 15-year-old miniature Lusitania, of World War I infamy, which is set in some realistic-looking waves and was expected to fetch as much as $2,000. And then there is the Imperator, a hulking 10-foot-long German ocean liner on sale, which Lannan said could carry a price tag of up to $150,000. Scutt didn’t own that one, but it’s there. Also for sale were some of Scutt’s original building models, among them the original miniature of the Trump Tower, the iconic building that helped launch the real estate tycoon and billionaire presidential candidate to pop culture stardom. “This guy Scutt made Trump,” Lannan said. “He
put Trump on the map.” You could own the model for an estimated $2,000 to $4,000, though Lannan suspected it would fetch more. Lannan said he had never met Trump, but did write him a letter asking if he was as interested in buying boating antiques as Scutt. He wrote back, and he wasn’t, Lannan said. He still has the letter somewhere. The collection includes $140,000 in valuable paper artifacts such as rare maps, pictures and schematics. Bidding was set to happen live at Bostonharborauctions .com beginning Saturday. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Hot air. Balloon makes emergency landing in Grafton lot
Scene of the crash THE GRAFTON NEWS
A hot air balloon full of people made an emergency landing in the parking lot of the Grafton commuter rail stop Tuesday morning, police said. The balloon touched down in the lot around 8:40 a.m., dinging three cars, according to police. Six people were on the balloon at the time. No one was
injured. According to police, Derald Young of Dixfield, Maine, was piloting the balloon, owned and operated by Dixfield’s Damn Yankee Balloons. He was trying to land in the nearby Tufts University campus, which is about 1,000 yards southeast of the Grafton lot. Tricky winds blew the balloon off
course, knocking it into an overhead wire between two light support poles. The pole, a light and a wire fell over. “The wind conditions this morning changed,” Young told The Grafton News. “The directions changed almost constantly. Balloons cannot go left or right at all. You have to land straight ahead.”
He wasn’t worried when his basket approached the MBTA lot, he told the News. “I’ve done this too long to get nervous,” Young reportedly said. Young was also piloting a balloon that crashed in Clinton last year, slamming into power lines and injuring several passengers. SPENCER BUELL

Federal case. Catherine Greig has refused to testify before a grand jury. The girlfriend of convicted Boston mobster James “Whitey Bulger was indicted on Tuesday for contempt of court for refusing to testify about the couple’s time in hiding, the Massachusetts District Attorney’s office said. Catherine Greig, 64, had been ordered by the U.S. District Court in Boston last year to answer questions before a grand jury about people who helped Bulger while he lived on the lam for 16 years to avoid arrest. “Catherine Greig has yet again failed to do the right thing, said Boston FBI agent Joseph Bonavolonta in a press release. “Her refusal to
testify has hindered the FBI’s efforts to seek justice for the victims of [Bulger’s] crimes. Bulger, one of America’s most notorious gangsters, was convicted in 2013 of charges including committing or ordering 11 murders in the 1970s and 1980s. Bulger fled Boston in 1994 on a tip his arrest was imminent. He spent 16 years on the lam and was among the FBI’s “Most Wanted fugitives before his capture in California in 2011. There is no maximum prison term for contempt of court, with sentences imposed at a judge’s discretion. Greig is already serving an eight-year sentence for her 2012 conviction for identity fraud and harboring Bulger. Her lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment. REUTERS

Flight from Cuba. An Alitalia plane carrying Pope Francis touched down at Joint Base Andrews. Pope Francis arrived on his first visit to the United States on Tuesday, bringing to Washington a message that its power and wealth should be made to serve humanity, and not the other way around. Schoolchildren who gathered on the tarmac to welcome Francis cheered as the plane descended. “We love Francis, yes we do. We love Francis, how about you?” they chanted. In a sign of the importance that the White House gives to the visit, President Barack Obama took the unusual step of traveling to the air base with his family to welcome Francis. The two men will meet again on Wednesday at the White House, after which the 78-year-old pope will parade past Washington’s major monuments before a crowd expected to reach tens of thousands. The pontiff has electrified liberal-leaning U.S.
Climate change
Dioceses clash with pope Claiming that the fight against climate change is an urgent moral duty, Pope Francis in June urged the world to phase out fossil fuels. Yet in the heart of U.S. oil country, several dioceses are leasing out drilling rights to oil and gas companies. In Oklahoma City, church officials have signed three new oil and gas leases since Francis’ public statement. Oklahoma and Texas have been at the forefront of a boom in energy production. Pat Svacina, a spokesman for the Diocese of Forth Worth, Texas, said the diocese received $31,661 from its leases so far in fiscal year 2015. Church authorities receive a royalty from 15 to 25 percent of the value of what is taken out of the ground. The Vatican does not have direct power over investment decisions taken by dioceses in the U.S., a responsibility reserved for bishops. REUTERS

Volkswagen says 11M cars hit by scandal, investigations rise Questionable. Volkswagen was challenged as far back as 2014 over emissions test. Volkswagen said a scandal over falsified U.S. vehicle emission tests could affect 11 million of its cars worldwide as investigations of its diesel models multiplied, heaping fresh pressure on CEO Martin Winterkorn. Volkswagen has brought forward a meeting of senior supervisory board members to Tuesday evening from Wednesday, with Winterkorn’s future on the line, a German newspaper reported, citing board sources. The report in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung followed an earlier story in the Tages-

Porsche sports car business. A Volkswagen spokesman denied the Tagesspiegel report. Winterkorn did not mention his future in a video message posted on the company’s website in which he repeated his apology for the scandal. But a key Winterkorn ally withheld public support for the chief executive. “I don’t want to preempt the upcoming intense deliberations and will not comment on details or any consequences,” Stephan Weil, head of the German state of Lower Saxony, told reporters in Hanover when asked about Winterkorn’s future. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Friday that Volkswagen could face penalties of up to $18 billion for cheating emissions tests. REUTERS

Six things you need to know

Obama, in prison documentary: US legal system has been ‘unjust’
The United States has too long ignored the effect of high incarceration rates on minority and poor communities, President Barack Obama said in a TV documentary featuring an unprecedented presidential visit to a prison. “As a society we seem to be OK with certain communities being locked in this cycle where kids are being raised around drug crime. They naturally gravitate toward drug crime,” Obama told six inmates in July at the prison in the documentary, which is scheduled to air on Sunday. “They then get involved in the criminal justice system, and it just
churns, and everybody thinks that’s normal,” the president told the nonviolent drug offenders at the medium-security El Reno federal prison in Oklahoma. His visit is part of HBO’s “Vice” documentary program. Obama has made criminal justice reform a top priority of his final years in office and beyond. More than 1.5 million Americans were in state or federal prisons at the end of 2013, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. African-Americans comprised about a third of the prisoners at the time despite being just 15 percent of the U.S. population. During an interview for the Vice documentary, Obama said the U.S. justice system “tilts in a direction that is unjust,” especially for nonviolent drug offenses. “This is an area where the statistics are so skewed, you have to question whether we have become numb to the cost that it has on these communities,” he said. Senate to sidestep abortion fight in funding bill
tions take another big step forward in transforming Office from a familiar set of individual productivity apps to a connected set of apps and services designed for modern working, collaboration and teamwork,” Chief Executive Satya Nadella said in a statement. The new Office 2016 apps are available in 40 languages.
Senate bill would keep federal agencies open into December: McConnell
Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate, hoping to avert an Oct. 1 government shutdown when federal funding runs out at the end of the current fiscal year, are likely to advance a stop-gap spending bill that abandons attempts to halt funding for Planned Parenthood, Senator John Cornyn said on Tuesday. “Given the president’s opposition and Democrats’ opposition, at some point I anticipate there will be a clean CR,” Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican, told reporters, referring to the temporary government funding bill known as a “continuing resolution.” He said he did not know whether the House of Representatives would embrace such a bill, however.

Americans overpaying for cancer drugs
Americans are paying way over the odds for some modern cancer drugs, with pharmaceutical companies charging up to 600 times what the medicines cost to make, according to an independent academic study. The United States also pays more than double the price charged in Europe for these drugs, so-called tyrosine kinase inhibitors, a potent class of cancer pills with fewer side effects than chemotherapy. The analysis by pharmacologist Andrew Hill of Britain’s University of Liverpool is likely to fuel a growing storm over U.S. drug costs. Hillary Clinton’s declared aim to lower the cost of prescription drugs by ending what her campaign describes as “excessive profiteering” triggered a selloff in drug stocks this week.
South Dakota fire with six dead likely murdersuicide: authorities
Authorities believe a man shot his wife and four children to death, set fire to their house in South Dakota and then killed himself, the state attorney general’s office said in a news conference on Tuesday. All six family members were found dead on Thursday after a fire destroyed their house near Platte, South Dakota, a small city about 110 miles west of Sioux Falls. State and county investigators believe Scott
Westerhuis died by a self-inflicted shotgun wound, the state attorney general’s office said in a statement. There are no other suspects, a spokeswoman for the office said. Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that his wife, Nicole, and children Kailey, Jaeci, Connor and Michael were killed by shotgun wounds and are homicide victims, the attorney general’s office statement said. The Charles Mix County Sheriff ’s Office and the state Division of Criminal Investigation are conducting interviews, collecting evidence and doing forensic tests, the attorney general’s office said. U.S. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate would vote on a stopgap government funding bill this week that aimed at averting a shutdown of
federal agencies at the Oct. 1 start of the new fiscal year. The measure would fund government agencies through Dec. 11, congressional aides said. Senate Republicans initially will seek to pass a version of the spending bill that cuts off all federal funds to Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit women’s health care group now embroiled in an abortion controversy. French court upholds ban on Uber’s service using drivers who aren’t professionals France’s Constitutional Court upheld a national law that banned one of Uber Technologies’ car services that relies on nonprofessional drivers using their own vehicles, dealing another setback to the company in Europe. Uber had challenged the legality of a law passed by the French government, which banned its so-called UberPOP service and updated rules on how taxi companies could compete. “The Constitutional Court rejects all the arguments raised by the company and declares the contested parts of the law as conforming with the Constitution,” the court said. Hacks. Apple plans steps to prevent future App Store attacks A senior Apple executive on Tuesday said the company would make it easier for Chinese app developers to download its tools for building mobile apps in a bid to prevent further attacks on its App Store. In the wake of the first major breach on its outlet for distributing iPhone and iPad software, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller told Chinese news site Sina.com that it will offer domestic downloads within China of its software for developing apps. He made the comment after Apple on Sunday confirmed that the App Store had suffered its first large-scale breach. Unknown hackers infected legitimate programs by persuading app developers to download a tainted copy of the toolkit. It was the first time a company executive has talked about efforts to secure the App Store since the attack surfaced late last week. Chinese app developers have told Reuters they resorted to downloading the tainted software kit for developers from unofficial, third-party sources because of slow speeds downloading from Apple’s official servers located overseas. Many complained the U.S. tech giant should do more to support developers in the company’s second-biggest

a malicious program dubbed XcodeGhost that was embedded in hundreds, possibly thousands, of legitimate apps. It is the first reported case of large numbers of malicious software programs making their way past Apple’s stringent app review process. Prior to this attack, a total of just five malicious apps had ever been found in the App Store, according to cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks Inc. REUTERS

January Jones and Will Forte split up, were apparently dating ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
“Last Man on Earth” stars Will Forte and January Jones have reportedly broken up after five months of dating, according to Us Weekly. Wait, they were dating? And while they were both at the Emmys Sunday night — with Forte making a hilarious cameo in Andy Samberg’s opening number — the split apparently happened last month. Sources say there were no awkward run-ins at the ceremony or afterparties,
so there’s that, at least. As for why they couldn’t make it work, it’s less to do with bridging the comedy and drama divide, apparently. A source spills that single mom Jones has been telling friends, “Relationships are a pain in the ass.” Sure, but Forte seems so chill. As a side note, isn’t it superawkward when you find out two people are dating by hearing about their breakup?

Cookie is (finally) back in your life Interview. Taraji P. Henson says her “Empire” character is ready to start storming into rooms again. To say that “Empire” took the TV world by storm last winter would be an understatement. The musical soap opera quickly became one of the most popular shows on television. But a large part of that interest was inspired by Taraji P. Henson’s overpowering performance as matriarch Cookie Lyon, who at the beginning of the show had recently been released from prison and was on the warpath to get the
family company back in her name. Cookie is behind a lot of the family’s drama, expertly playing each of her sons off of each other and conspiring against her ex Lucious, all while dressed to the nines and striding into each room as if she owns the place. When asked if Cookie will be making her trademark big entrances this year, Henson laughs and says, “That’s what she does!” Fans will see much of the same Cookie they fell in love with in Season 1, as Henson promises “not many changes” to her. Instead, the show will be “delving more into the 17 years she was locked away from her family. That says a lot about her.” Like any TV fan, she

went to a popular source to learn about prison life: “I’ve been binge-watching ‘Orange Is the New Black.’ I’m almost done with the second season. It just made me think, that’s an important part of her life. We need to know, how did it change her? How did she go in? What did it do to her coming out?” That drama may have to share time in her life with her fight with middle son Jamal. While the two started out as the closest pair in the family, by the end of the season they were completely at odds. And Henson says that’s not likely to change: “That’s

going to kill you. I will say this. You’re not going to like that part.” Cookie finds herself in enemy territory in Season 2, as she’s formed an alliance with Lucious’ other ex, Boo Boo Kitty — or Anika, to give her her real name instead of Cookie’s hilariously derogatory moniker. Asked whether the two will set aside their differences, Henson just laughs knowingly and says, “You’ll have to watch.”
Henson says she’s not sure if she’ll sing in Season 2. “I requested it, and I thought it would be interesting. You know women, we’re always taking the back burner for our men. ... So I was like, wouldn’t it be interesting — because Cookie is so family-first — if not only did she go to jail for her family, and not rat [Lucious] out, but what if she was the talent when they were younger, and she decided to say, ‘You know what, I’ll fall back and let him be the talent.’”

because the show is set in the ’80s, that means some unusual costumes for the cast. “The worst outfit would be my aerobic wear. I did have to be in a leotard, and I’d rather not do that again. The second worst would be my Thanksgiving outfit. Twice I’ve worn it. I think it’s made of vinyl, and it comes off on my skin, says McLendon-Covey. Some of those outfits came right from the source — show creator Adam
Goldberg has borrowed clothes from his mother that McLendon-Covey has then worn on the show. “The great thing is she wants all this stuff back when the show ends. I don’t know what she’s going to do with it, says McLendon-Covey with a laugh. Despite the goofiness of the setting, McLendonCovey thinks it’s the emotion that makes the show a success. “Forget all the ’80s references, she says.

Maintenance musts: the fall checklist Now is the time to make sure your nest is nice and cozy for the winter. Here’s what to do before the mercury drops. MONICA WEYMOUTH @MetroBos letters@metro.us
When the temperature begins to dip, it’s easy to remember what you need for fall: boots, cable-knit sweaters, pumpkin-flavored everything and more boots. A less exciting — but just as important — list has essentials your house needs for fall. If you want a happy home over the winter and through the spring, it pays to spend a little time working on
home ISTOCK
your humble abode now. New to the homeowner game — or, ahem, late to the home-maintenance game? We checked in with Sarah Fogle, the DIYer, remodeler and powertool enthusiast behind The Ugly Duckling House blog, for her top three fall to-dos.
1
Pest control
You’re not the only one who enjoys a nice warm place to hibernate. “I just hired a contractor to finish some exterior siding work, especially along the chimney, and a big part of that was long overdue for preventing critters — woodpeckers and squirrels in particular — from becoming unwelcome roommates,” says Fogle. “I’m also replacing old screens on the wooden gables in the attic — again, to prevent a pesky squirrel from moving in this winter.”
2
Insulating touchups
Last February’s heating bill should be the only motivation you need to whip out the caulking gun. “This is one of those fix-it-as-you-go kind of things, but I almost always run into a new spot somewhere in the house that could use better insulation,” says Fogle, adding she’s going to add replacing the weather stripping to her to-do list this year.
3
Garden maintenance
Come April, your yard doesn’t have to look like a morning-after mess. “Every spring, it’s weed city, and a significant amount of that is preventable,” says Fogle. “This fall, I’m preparing my new garden beds to stay weed-free this winter with free materials like cardboard and newspaper, which make spring planting even easier.”
Other maintenance musts 1. Pay a visit to your roof. The time to make a repair is now, not when you have a snowdrift in your kitchen. 2. Clean those gutters. Because the last thing you want hanging out next to a pile of leaves is a pile of ice. 3. Service your heater. Make an appointment while the weather is still mild. Not only will you catch any problems before the mercury drops, but a clean and wellmaintained heating system will improve the quality of your air, as well. 4. Inventory your yard equipment. If nothing else, make sure your snow shovel is in fighting shape and your rock salt is at the ready.

This fall, two finishing touches are due to top off phase one of the Enterprise Center, a $100 million residential and commercial development in downtown Brockton. Based around the former Brockton Enterprise newspaper’s headquarters, which was built in the late 1800s, the first phase of the two-part project features 52,000 square feet of commercial/office space and 10,000 square feet of retail and artist exhibition space. There are also 113 residential units, including the Enso Flats 42-home artist live-work community, and Center 50, which features 71 market-rate and affordablerate homes. The first finishing touch is a permanent art installation in the Enso Flats lobby gallery. The second is filling the 4500-square-foot restaurant space in the Enterprise building, which is ready for a tenant to move in. There’s nothing like food and art to set a neighborhood alight, and both should be in place this fall.
TRINITY FINANCIAL
City of Champions, not urban blight Installing an artist community at Enso Flats was a deliberate move to rehabilitate Brockton, which is called The City of Champions and is blessed with amazing architecture. Its recent reputation, however, has been tarnished by drug abuse and violence. “We’re trying to change that notion of Brockton,” says Matt Zahler, senior project manager at Trinity Financial, the company behind the Enterprise Center. “I’ve gotten to know the community well in the five years since we started this project, and Brockton has a diverse population and a rich culture. Center Street, where the Enterprise Center is located, is now a completely different landscape,” he says. “City Hall re-did their plaza and included a new amphithe-
ater. There are concerts; there’s a farmer’s market. Things are happening in Brockton.”
Artists as urban pioneers The Enso Flats community has been key to this effort. When Trinity Financial developed Lowell’s Appleton Mills, they saw how bringing artists into a blighted area enriches a neighborhood for the larger community. “We saw that the Lowell development was a great success,” says Zahler. “Art is so broadreaching in its definition, and we wanted to mirror that at Enso Flats. We have a clothing designer, a DJ/ graphic artist who does set design. We have a sculptor, a singer and a poet. We didn’t want to stick with a strict definition of what an artist is — we wanted to include anyone dedicated to creativity.”

New England is on a warpath. A few fumbles let the Bills climb back into a game that was 37-13 at one point, but this is the second week in a row the Patriots have won a game that wasn’t at all as close as the score indicated. The Pats face Jacksonville Sunday.
Denver rallied to stun the Chiefs last Thursday after a sluggish start recalled the offense’s struggles against Baltimore. Everyone had an opinion on the end of the Peyton Manning era last week, but Peyton made his known by throwing for three touchdowns and nabbing a late-comeback win.
Two weeks, two impressive victories for Cincy. Drubbing Oakland 30-13 looks even better in the wake of the Raiders’ upset win over Baltimore, and San Diego is always a quality opponent. The Bengals are balanced on offense right now. Jeremy Hill just needs to get the fumbles under control.

Packers (2-0)
Cardinals (2-0)
Cowboys (2-0)
Seahawks (0-2)
A Week 2 regular season game will never qualify as revenge for a conference title game, but the Packers got the most satisfaction they could in the win over Seattle. Aaron Rodgers keeps finding receivers and the Pack will still be at the top of this list until the day he isn’t under center.
The end of last season made it easy to forget how good this team is when Carson Palmer is around and healthy. The Cards have faced two of the NFL’s bottom-feeders so far, to be sure, but they’ve treated them as such. Larry Fitzgerald’s renaissance Sunday was nice to behold.
One would be hardpressed to find two morecostly back-to-back victories in NFL history as the Cowboys lost Tony Romo to injury just a week after losing Dez Bryant. Still, both are hopeful to return this season and Dallas has some breathing room in the lowly NFC East.
Seattle could make a case last week that it outplayed St. Louis. That case isn’t there this week. Not that anyone would consider questioning a decision made by Pete Carroll, but get Kam Chancellor back fast, Seahawks! The Cardinals are already two games up in the division.

Bruins a team in transition NHL. The B’s have sprinkled in new faces to go along with the old guard.
On one hand, so much has changed for the Bruins since the last time they took the TD Garden ice for a game five months ago: They fired Peter Chiarelli and promoted Don Sweeney to GM, then they traded Milan Lucic to Los Angeles and Dougie Hamilton to Calgary. On the other hand, Boston has a strong nucleus of dependable veterans such as goaltender Tuukka Rask, defenseman Zdeno Chara and centers David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron — who all had an extra-long summer to get healthy and think about all that went wrong in a 201415 season in which the B’s missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons. The preseason started this past Sunday in Providence with a 2-0 win over

the Devils. Like any other sport, the objective of the preseason is to keep everybody healthy (promising forward Seth Griffith is out 3-4 weeks with an MCL injury suffered on Sunday)
while also building chemistry between the returning players and the newest members. Defenseman Matt Irwin, a UMass-Amherst product, scored both goals
for Boston against New Jersey, and former BC star Jimmy Hayes likewise made his debut with the spoked “B.” Defenseman Colin Miller (obtained in the Lucic trade) assisted on

both power-play goals by Irwin, and with his hard shot — not to mention his physical play — it’s easy to see him making an impact on the Bruins this season. Some other storylines to watch unfold over the next few weeks for the Bruins include seeing forward (and top free agent signing) Matt Beleskey’s transition to the team while sorting out who’ll back up Rask. At least initially in training camp, Beleskey has been skating on a line with Kre-
jci and David Pastrnak. The Bruins have lacked a legitimate backup goaltender the last few years, causing them to overwork Rask. He started 70 games last season, third-most in the league. Rookie Zane McIntyre was a sixth-round pick in 2010 but he just wrapped up a very successful threeyear run at the University of North Dakota. Malcolm Subban is still only 21 and the one game he played in last season for the B’s was a disaster (3 goals allowed on 6 shots vs. St. Louis) but he was a first-round pick in 2012 so the younger brother of PK has the ability. Finally, Jeremy Smith is the oldest of the three contenders and could have the inside track to the job after he was one of the top goaltenders in the AHL last season with Providence (2211-5, 2.05 GAA, .933 save percentage).
