Expert not digging North-South Sta. link T. Engineering professor says extend the Blue Line instead. The idea of building a tunnel under a tunnel through downtown Boston might give people flashbacks of the horrors and hassles of the Big Dig. But experts said that tunneling under Boston to link the two major rail hubs in the North-South Station Rail Link would not disrupt life on the surface or in the Central Artery tunnels. “The original plan for the Big Dig included this rail connector,” Wentworth Institute of Technology Civil Engineering Professor James Lambrecht said. “It died out because of the cost overruns, but the tunnel was built with this link in mind.” Lambrecht said the connector link should be much lower on the list of priorities. “I would rather see them extend the Blue Line down to Riverside through Back Bay, and getting rid of the D Line on the Green Line,” Lambrecht said. “I refuse to punish myself by riding the Green Line,

and if they bring in an estimated 30,000 more people once the Medford extension is complete, we’re talking about taking an overcrowded line and making it much worse.” Lambrecht said that by creating a Blue Line track through Back Bay and to Riverside, a passenger
could ride from Hynes to Airport station in just 12 minutes on just one train. However, proponents of the North-South Station link project met behind closed doors on Monday to look over the benefits and costs of the project. At present, there are 140 state representatives and senators signed onto a 2012 letter of support for the 1.5-mile connector line. Former Govs. Michael Dukakis and Bill Weld met with Gov. Charlie Baker earlier this month to sell him on the $2-$4 billion link idea. “My main focus on this issue has been to fix the T,” Baker said. “I do believe that fixing the T is my largest priority. But obviously, in this context of economic development and regional planning, not just for Boston but for the rest of the Commonwealth, this is certainly something worth considering as part of that.” Tunnel boring machines would tear 35- to 40-feet-in-diameter circular holes under the city and lay concrete in its wake at a rate of 50 to 100 feet each day, but there would be no blasting or surface-digging to disrupt traffic at all. The connector rail line would run about 130 feet
below the city surface, which Lambrecht said would be a problem because trains don’t like running on steep grades. The track would have to start a mile away, Widett Circle for the South Station line and Mystic River/Sullivan Station for the North Station line, and would have to ease their way to the ultimate depth. The tunnel would only take about a year, Lambrecht estimated. The stations might take four or five. Lambrecht said the low-ball $2 billion price tag is too low and the $8 billion estimate from the Romney administration is far too high, making the current estimate of somewhere around $4 billion possible. “There have been some high estimations from prior administrations, which is why we need a more comprehensive study,” said Rep. Sean Garballey who is also the MBTA Caucus co-chair. “We owe it to the taxpayers to have a more comprehensive study, and we owe it to the commuters to being our transit system up to 21st-century standards.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Snow. Baker, T bosses say winter work ahead of schedule On the go

Feel that chill in the air? Before we know it, the snow will be here. When it does, the MBTA will be ready. That was the message from state officials, who were confident at a press conference Wednesday about the coming season. “We are far better prepared for this winter than last year,” Gov. Charlie Baker said at a staging facility in Dorchester on Wednesday. The T has been working through an $85 million package of winter-resiliency fixes spurred by last year’s catastrophic mix of delays and canceled trains amid record snowfall. Since then, MBTA crews
have completed 27,000 linear feet of third-rail replacements on the Red and Orange lines, said Frank DePaola, the MBTA’s interim general manager. By mid-December, DePaola said 50,000 feet of new rails would be installed on all of the Orange Line, and the Red Line moving south to Quincy Center. The stretch between Quincy Center and Braintree stations was set to be upgraded in 2016, he said. Also new this winter are plows that will be fitted on the front of trains, 20 each on the Red and Orange lines, designed to push snow out of the way of tracks and trains’ motors.
Gov. Charlie Baker, right, joined MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola for a tour of the MBTA staging facility in Dorchester on Wednesday. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
The T has also running drills based on new protocols for ultra-snowy weather, DePaola said, modeled after the way the state’s Highway Division prepares for storms. “We’re preparing for
a winter just like last one, and our team is being trained for that,” DePaola said. Remember, it isn’t all good news. A mountain of work still needs to be done on the T to get it to a
so-called “state of good repair.” Updating the system to good working condition could cost north of $7 billion, the MBTA’s fiscal and management control board said in its report Tuesday. SPENCER BUELL

Joseph O’Donnell plead guilty to stealing $150,000 from clients and storing 12 bodies in a storage facility in Weymouth, among other charges on Wednesday.Â
O’Donnell ran his grandfather’s funeral home on Neponset Avenue since 1980, but failed to renew his license in 2008. From February 2009 to November 2011, he oversaw the funeral, burial or cremation of at least 201 individuals, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.
He also entered preneeds contracts with clients, many of whom were elderly, planned and provided payments for their departed loved ones. Instead of putting those payments into a trust, O’Donnell dumped the money into the funeral home’s personal account. During the investigation, authorities got a

Exposure. Unshrinkit is fighting for the chance to air a commercial for millions. Their product is simple: a bottled formula that unshrinks shrunken sweaters. Their goal is big: land an ad that airs during the Super Bowl. Boston startup Unshrinkit, which started two years ago, is working around the clock to score points in a competition to get a slot in the most prized advertising space imaginable, squaring off against nine other small businesses in a quest for the most votes. The contest, called Small Business Big Game, is run by Intuit, the company that makes Quickbooks accounting software. A panel of judges picked 10 businesses, including Unshrinkit, from a pool of 15,000 applicants, a spokesperson said. A spot during the “big game” (for copyright reasons, they can’t call it the Super Bowl — so they call it the “big game”) would be a big deal for Unshrinkit, said Nate Barbera, chief innovation officer. “Talk about blowing the doors off a business,” Barbera said in an interview at the Seaport startup accelerator MassChallenge, where the company is headquartered.
An engineer by training, Barbera, 30, claims he came up with the Unshrinkit formula by studying wool textbooks on loan from the library then sloshing chemicals together in his Harvard dorm. Barbera and co-founder Desiree Stolar, the company’s 30-year-old CEO, teamed up to sell the product as part of a firstyear course at the Harvard Business School. They both graduated in May. Stolar said she has already dreamed up ideas for a potential commercial for football’s biggest event, which more than 100 million people watched last year, and for which advertisers paid a reported $4.5 million for a 30-second spot. Stolar said, for example, a college student comes home for the holidays wearing a shriveled-up sports team sweater, and grandma comes to the rescue with a bottle of Unshrinkit, she mused. “I just have this vision,” she said. To make it happen, they would need tens of thousands of votes online. To get them, they said, they are on a big media and marketing push to recruit supporters. Reality TV star, smallbusiness owner and “Apprentice” Season 1 winner Bill Rancic, a spokesman for the competition, flew to Boston this week to meet Unshrinkit and offer some advice on besting their competitors. Rancic, who is visiting

all 10 finalists over a 10-city tour, told us he believes Unshrinkit could have what it takes if they can pull off a marketing blitz by November. “They’ve got to mobilize. They’ve got to get the people within their community to rally behind them,” he said. “At some point, the numbers are going to speak volumes.” Intuit would not say publicly how many votes each contender has so far, planning to keep the rankings secret throughout the competition, according to a spokesperson. Competition organizers were set to announce the top three contenders in early November then announce a winner a few weeks later. Last year’s winner was a company called GoldieBlox, which makes toys designed to stoke an interest in engineering in young girls. Show some love for Unshrinkit on the Small Business Big Game website. Another Massachusetts company out of Swansea — a fitness studio for children called WiggleKids Inc. — is also competing. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Pope Francis speaks on the South Lawn of the White House. / GETTY IMAGES
Pope Francis focuses on environment, poverty and migrants Speech on the White House South Lawn. The pope lauded President Barack Obama’s efforts to reduce air pollution. Pope Francis on Wednesday urged the United States to help tackle climate change and touched on other divisive U.S. political issues such as immigration and economic inequality on his first visit to the world’s richest nation. In an era of renewed racial tensions in the country, the 78-year-old
pope invoked America’s best-known civil rights leader, the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., to make points about the environment and equality. Speaking later to American bishops, Francis acknowledged the sexual-abuse scandal that has tainted the U.S. church for years by saying these “crimes” should “never be repeated.” As Washington streets were closed and federal workers stayed home, about 15,000 people gathered in bright sunshine on the South Lawn. They heard the pope depart from his usual practice and give a speech in English.
He again made a gesture of simplicity, pulling up in the small black Fiat he used for his arrival in the capital Tuesday. Francis is a frequent critic of the damage caused to the world’s poor and the environment by capitalism’s excesses. The pope also commented on immigration and religious freedom, both issues that are on candidates’ agendas in the run up to the 2016 presidential election. Obama, whose plans for a climate-change bill were thwarted in Congress early in his presidency, said he shared the pope’s concerns about the environment. REUTERS

World’s biggest carmaker. Volkswagen boss quits over diesel emissions testing scandal Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn resigned Wednesday, taking responsibility for the German carmaker’s rigging of U.S. emissions tests in the biggest scandal in its 78-year history. “Volkswagen needs a fresh start — also in
terms of personnel. I am clearing the way for this fresh start with my resignation, Winterkorn said following a marathon meeting with the executive committee of the VW board. The world’s biggest carmaker admitted to U.S. regulators that it programmed computers in its cars to detect when they were being tested and alter the running of their diesel engines to conceal their true emissions. Volkswagen did not name a successor but said proposals on management appointments would be made to a full board meeting on Friday. Tagesspiegel newspaper, citing sources close to the board, said earlier that Winterkorn would be replaced by Matthias Mueller, who heads the company’s Porsche sports-car business. “How to Get Away With Murder” returns tonight at 10 p.m. / MITCHELL HAASETH, ABC
Interview. The “How to Get Away With Murder” star has a few things to say to people who think her character isn’t likable. Viola Davis made history in her first leading role on network television. After one season, she became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for best actress in a drama for her portrayal of the brilliant but tortured Annalise Keating in “How to Get Away With Murder.” But it hasn’t all been easy. Davis says she’s heard criticism that Annalise isn’t likable enough, which isn’t what she wants to hear. “It frustrates me a little bit because I feel that people don’t understand what it means to be an actor. I don’t think James Gandolfini or Robert De Niro in ‘Taxi Driver’ or ‘Dexter’ or James Spader — I don’t think they get asked that. I think that people just accept the character. They accept what they’re being given, and they actually reward them because they feel like it’s complicated,” says Davis. “It’s only women that you want to be pretty and likable.” And that thought process isn’t just from random commenters on the Internet complaining.
“I remember I read a review, too, where someone wrote, ‘I don’t think I’ll continue to watch “How to Get Away With Murder” because she’s not pretty, and she’s not likable,’ and I thought to myself that nobody will ever address that as being their stuff,” says Davis. “They’ll put it on the actor. And me as an actor, that’s not my responsibility. If I make her likable, then I’m pushing an edit button, and that’s not what you’re supposed to do as an actor. You don’t press an edit button.” But the likability problem extends beyond just asking that Annalise be more charming. People seem to really like the villainous characters that Gandolfini and other male actors have brought to life, and Davis says that affection is influenced by gender. “They will forgive their mess. We understand that

“This is the first time Davis has stayed with a character this long. Asked if she’s enjoying the long-term work on Annalise, she says, “I am,” before adding with a laugh, “Ask me that in another three years.” Davis men at the end of the day are flawed. A man can have 50 affairs, but still there’s something charming about him. But a woman, like in ‘Fatal Attraction,’ who’s having sex with a married man is a bitch. There is something about women that we want to stay virtuous,” she says. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

everyday life for people of color. “The most revolutionary things you can do are the most simple. And I think taking the wig off, having a scene with a mother talking about sexual abuse, a mother [and] a woman of color, putting me between her legs and doing my hair, all those things, no matter what people say, you’ve never seen it on TV. You just haven’t. You haven’t seen me on TV. That’s what excites me, that [creator] Pete [Nowalk] is willing to go there.”

Changes in Shondaland Interview. Ellen Pompeo says “Grey’s Anatomy is going to come back stronger than ever.
It’s not every show that can recover from the loss of one of its two romantic leads, but that’s just what “Grey’s Anatomy will be trying to do this fall. While the show has been popular over the years for many reasons, a large part of its early success was certainly due to the chemistry between leads Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey. After Dempsey’s beloved McDreamy was written off last season, Pompeo will now be carrying on without him, but she thinks it’s good for the show to go through this transition. “I always say this. In order for a one-hour drama to continue, there have to be big upheavals.
“Grey’s Anatomy returns tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC. / RICHARD CARTWRIGHT
For a show that’s been on the air for over a decade, that can inject some necessary new life into everyone who works on the show. “It always feels completely new, which is why it’s easy to keep going, says Pompeo of the atmosphere once a cast member exits.
Every time we’ve lost a major character — we’ve had such amazing characters on the show — and every time we’ve lost one, it’s been devastating and sad, and you think, ‘How can the show go on?’ but that’s how the writers find inspiration, explains Pompeo.

Shonda Rhimes throughout, and when asked if she wished Dempsey had been written off in a different way, she answers, “I never question Shonda, ever. What she’s doing is clearly working! That might mean a new romantic interest for Meredith Grey, who’s scrambling in the wake of the death of the love of her life. As to the prospect of a new love, “As long as Shonda comes up with it, I’m down for whatever idea she comes up with. She always comes up with great ideas. With that in mind, she says, “I know that the focus this year is going to be how you move on in the face of tragedy, and [Meredith’s] got three kids, and I guess to dive into her kids and work is the most logical place.

A lighter touch After all the tragedy at the end of last season, Pompeo says this season will likely be a little less dark. “Shonda really wants this season to be a lot lighter, she explains. “We have some cute interns and some fresh blood, so I think you have to mix it up. We were dark, now we have to go light. You have to keep changing to keep the audience engaged.

“My Fair Lady” is a big, old-fashioned musical that director Scott Edmiston has somehow fit perfectly into the intimate confines of the Lyric Stage. The tale of a lowly street flower seller who becomes the subject of a bet between a pompous phonetics professor and a famous linguist is based
on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion.” The 1956 musical adaptation, one of Broadway’s biggest hits, boasts a score with some of the most famous songs in musical theater history. It would be easy to let the score do all the work, but Edmiston smartly puts the focus on the characters, and the story becomes more than just a vehicle to get from one well-known song to the next. It also helps that Janie E. Howland’s minimal set facilitates ease of movement and avoids the potential for clunky transitions. At its core, “My Fair Lady” is all about the blossoming of a young lady, and Jennifer Ellis proves to be just the right lady to fill the shoes of the famous Eliza Doolittle. Though “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” sounds beautiful,
her eyes tell a heartbreaking story of struggle that will change the way you listen to that song. Ellis masters both dialects and nails the humor in her character’s transition, but there’s a wow moment when she enters the ball, followed by a stunning rendition of “I Could Have Danced All Night” that will bring chills to anyone with a pulse. Christopher Chew masters the rigid and selfcentered Henry Higgins and Remo Airaldi delivers a charming turn as Colonel Pickering. Jared Troilo makes you forget the first act is a little long when he closes it with a rendition of “On the Street Where You Live” that’ll make you think the “loverly” “Lady” isn’t the only star of this show.

Considering Passenger’s single “Let Her Go” spent a massive 45 weeks at No. 1 in the U.K. and 28 weeks (and counting) on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts here in the U.S., it’s hard to believe Mike Rosenberg (the man behind the moniker) was considering giving up music altogether not that long ago. Here, in an emotional interview, he talks about what kept him going when he hit rock bottom.
Going solo

Passenger may be a oneman show now, but originally, it was a full band. When the band broke up in 2009, going solo didn’t even occur to Rosenberg.
Despite his massive success, Rosenberg still enjoys busking, something he started doing after the band broke up and he had no money. “Looking back on it, those were some of the best years of my life,” he says. “I still love busking because not everyone can go to a concert. They might not be able to afford it or they might not be old enough. Busking allows everyone to check out what I do.”
Turning pain into poetry Mike Rosenberg wrote “Let Her Go” about a painful breakup, but he says it’s a joy to play the song now. SHERVIN LAINEZ
But he booked some solo gigs anyway while visiting a friend in Australia and says the crowd connected more than ever before. “Suddenly, people could hear every word and really understand it,” Rosenberg says. “It was a massive turning point.”
Quarterlife crisis But that wasn’t the only time Rosenberg considered giving up. While working on his second
album “Whispers,” released in 2014, he hit a low point. “I was 27 and had been busking and putting out my own records for four or five years and I just didn’t feel like it was growing at all,” he remembers. Holed up in his hotel room, Rosenberg put all his frustrations down on paper, which later became his song “27.” He says the very act of feeling his passion overflowing reignited his
ambition and reminded him why he wanted to be a musician in the first place. “Obviously every [musician] dreams of playing to thousands of people and having the number one song, but that’s not the reason you do it,” he says. “The reason you do it is because you’re trying to create something that means something to people and to yourself. It’s helpful to remind yourself of that sometimes.”
All of the songs Rosenberg writes are deeply personal and often painful, but he says it’s a joy to share them. “When [I] write them, it can be a very painful thing because it’s still fresh. But as time goes on, I still remember the girl or the situation, but it turns into something different,” he says. “Especially with ‘Let Her Go,’ since it’s known around the world now. It started off as a really heart-wrenching breakup song, but now, for me, it’s such a treasured thing.”

REBOUNDING FROM ONE BLOODY SUNDAY Week 2 was one of the worst in recent memory for injuries. There are a lot of owners out there thinking their season is over right now. That’s a silly thought. The good news is that a lot of the injuries were at quarterback, which is the most replaceable position in all of fantasy.
Swim with the stream In Week 1, Carson Palmer, Marcus Mariota, Alex Smith, Andy Dalton and Nick Foles were all top 10 quarterbacks. In Week 2, that top 10 list included Colin Kaepernick, Derek Carr, Tyrod Taylor, Palmer and Joe Flacco. The point is that we can add quarterbacks off the wire each week in plus situations and gain a top 10 expectation. That almost never happens at other positions.
Pickups of the week Who to add for Week 3: •
James Starks, RB, Packers - The offense won’t slow down at all if Eddie Lacy (ankle) misses time.
•
Leonard Hankerson, WR, Falcons - Roddy White is done, and Hankerson fits Kyle Shanahan’s system.
Two for one When it comes time for the fantasy playoffs, elite players are going to make the difference. So it’s never too early to take advantage of a desperate owner on the trade market. The best way to do this is to identify where our enemy is weak thanks to injury and offer him/her two of our mediocre players for one of his studs. He feels better about his
