Pope Francis arrives in NY, prays at St. Pat’s Popemobile. Devoted followers cheered the pope as his motorcade went up Fifth Avenue. Pope Francis led evening prayers at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday evening, less than two hours after touching down in New York City and greeting thousands of adoring fans while riding up Fifth Avenue. His first public words in New York were sent to Muslims on Eid al-Adha. “I would like to express two sentiments for my Muslim brothers and sisters,” Pope Francis said in Spanish during his homily. “I would have wished my greeting to be warmer, my sentiments of closeness in the face of tragedy they suffered in Mecca. In this moment I give assurance of my prayers, I unite myself with you all,” the pope said of the Wednesday stampede that left more than 700 dead during the annual pilgrimage. Francis spoke of humility and measuring success as “a grateful heart … compelled to serve the lord.” “Perhaps we need to ask ourselves: Are we capable of counting our blessings, or have I forgotten them,” the pope asked.

“Perhaps we need to ask ourselves: Are we capable of counting our blessings, or have I forgotten them?” Pope Francis

He thanked American nuns for their work and contributions to the church, and was met with a standing ovation. Timothy Cardinal Dolan said the pope became a New Yorker when he walked into the newly renovated cathedral, and said he asked Pope Francis to bless St. Patrick’s.

After touching down at JFK around 5 p.m., Pope Francis took a helicopter to Wall Street, then his motorcade uptown. On Fifth Avenue, he hopped out of his Fiat and into the popemobile with Timothy Cardinal Dolan as Commissioner Bill Bratton watched. Marvin Molina, 34,

at 6 p.m. He leaves for Philadelphia at 8:40 a.m Saturday out of JFK. Events are only open to ticket holders, and streets and sidewalks may be closed near the sites. The MTA is planning to keep all stations open and lines running during the pope’s visit, though some stairways and entrances near St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Central Park and Madison Square Garden might be closed. Up to 25 local buses and nearly all express buses

might be diverted, and the MTA advises riders to take the subway instead. Both the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North will have additional trains on standby, and the MetroNorth is canceling some scheduled trains. The LIRR is advising passengers to leave from Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn instead of Penn Station. Some entrances will be closed, though the LIRR’s 34th Street entrance and the Amtrak entrance at 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue

from Queens, said he and his partner went to the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue about two hours before they caught a brief glimpse of Francis passing by. “It was important for us to try to see him, being Catholic. He is important to us, especially being Latino,” said Molina, who was born in Ecuador. After seeing Francis drive and capturing the video on her tablet, Molina’s partner put her arms to her chest. Outside, the police perimeter around St. Patrick’s extended down the entire block of 53rd Street. As crowds cheered along the route, New Yorkers along 54th Street were just trying to get home. Department of Sanitation trucks blocked the road, and the closest subway station entrance was at 47th Street. The pope was received outside the cathedral by Mayor Bill de Blasio, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Sen. Chuck Schumer. Inside, Francis proceeded to the altar as audience members and cardinals snapped photos and took videos of the historic moment with their cellphones. Francis shook hands with parishioners in the front row before the service started. Additional reporting by Chester Soria. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

MTA

Expect delays, crowding today City officials have urged New Yorkers to leave their cars at home the next few days for Pope Francis’ visit and the U.N. General Assembly, and even though public transportation is the best way to travel, the MTA wants riders ready for service changes and crowding. “While our customers should expect some crowding and possible delays, we are prepared to get

everyone to their destinations safely and efficiently,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast said in a statement. Pope Francis starts his day with an 8:30 a.m. address at the United Nations, then travels downtown for an 11:30 a.m. interfaith service at the 9/11 Memorial. His Holiness will visit Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem at 4 p.m., take a motorcade through Central Park at 5 p.m. and then presides over mass at Madison Square Garden

will likely stay open. A list of items banned from Penn Station for security reasons on Friday is available at MTA.info. Construction on MTA bridges and tunnels has been suspended until Pope Francis leaves, and all crossings will be open. The MTA advises riders to expect delays, leave early and purchase a round-trip ticket. Up-todate information and route changes are available at MTA.info. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Before Congress, pope urges US to end hostility to immigrants Catholics. Francis was anked by two of America’s most inuential Catholics: John Boehner and Vice President Joe Biden. In a historic speech to Congress, Pope Francis on Thursday asked Americans to end hostility toward immigrants, jumping into a divisive debate about how the country should deal with millions of undocumented workers and their families. Bringing a message that America’s power and wealth should be used to serve humanity, the pontiff said the United States must not turn its back on “the stranger in our midst.â€?

Francis, born to an Italian immigrant family in Argentina, delivered a wide-ranging speech that addressed issues dear to U.S. liberals but also emphasized conservative val-

ues and Catholic teachings on the family. The leader of the world’s Catholics called for a more equitable economy, greater effort against climate change and an

end to the death penalty globally. His plea on immigration received frequent applause mostly from Democrats but also from Republicans, Supreme Court justices and

other dignitaries packed into the House of Representatives to hear the first address by a pope to Congress. Harsh rhetoric toward illegal immigrants has featured heavily in the race for the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential election. Francis drew on America’s history as a country made by immigrants and said it should not be put off by the number of foreigners, especially from Latin America, who are trying to make it their home. “We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation. To respond in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal, he said. REUTERS

Several Republican presidential candidates were in the audience, including retired neurologist Ben Carson, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Marco Rubio, son of Cuban immigrants.

Bratton: No more pot concessions Buzz. The NYPD commissioner told Metro legalizing pot won’t improve city’s K2 crisis.

NYPD’s top cop told Metro “under no circumstances” will the department make any further reforms on how it deals with marijuana arrests. “We’ve made all the concessions we’re making regarding marijuana,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Wednesday. His resolve comes days after City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and a handful of council members suggested to the de Blasio administration that the state and city should reconsider its marijuana policies. Bratton explained that he and Mayor Bill de Blasio have “a very different perspective” on the issue than City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Repeating similar statements he made in March, Bratton suggested that there remains a link between some of the city’s most violent crime and the sale of marijuana. “When we have a shooting or a murder, almost invariably you’re going to find marijuana associated with that — particularly the gang murders,” he said.

Alyssa Aguilera, policy director for advocacy and reform group VOCAL-NY, suggested Bratton’s statements were beyond flawed. “Commissioner Bratton’s claim that marijuana is somehow related to crime and violence is irresponsible fear mongering and not based in reality,” Aguilera said Thursday. “If anything, legalizing marijuana will reduce violent crime, as it did in Colorado, by eliminating a need for an underground marijuana market.” Aguilera also said that recent changes on NYPD policy toward marijuana have actually helped the city prevent needless criminalization. In November, Bratton joined de Blasio to announce an increase of the threshold for how much pot one has to carry to be arrested. Police must find more than 25 grams of marijuana on a person unless he or she does not have a personal ID and has an outstanding warrant. At the same time, Aguilera also took issue with Bratton’s refusal to link anti-marijuana laws with the citywide uptick in the use of synthetic marijuana, otherwise known as K2. “We know that some people use K2 to avoid testing positive for marijuana — like if they are on probation, parole or in a methadone program,” she said. K2 usage has been

On Tuesday, the speaker was one in a small choir of council members who urged the administration to reevaluate its marijuana policies. “This is an opportunity to look at issues of marijuana policy that might be driving folks to this dangerous drug,” Mark-Viverito said of the K2 scourge that has led to multiple crackdowns on users in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. The speaker voiced her support for measured adoption of legalization in November. However, Bratton poured cold water on the idea that legalization of one drug will abate abuse of another. The commissioner responded: “You can legalize every drug and I guarantee you they’ll find another illegal drug to use.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

Subway perv abuses cop A plainclothes female officer was sexually harassed and abused on Wednesday by a straphanger during rush hour, according to police. Authorities said Javier Monroy, 39, walked into

the 5 train at Grand Central at around 5:50 p.m. as an officer and sergeant with the NYPD’s transit anti-crime unit were on patrol on the southbound platform. The officers also boarded the crowded train, and as it headed toward the Union Square station,

police said Monroy approached the plainclothes cop. Dressed in civilian clothes, the officer reported that the man brushed up against her left hip and then pressed his groin to her body. Her partners approached Monroy at the next station and arrested him. CHESTER SORIA

Bushwick market founder’s social media posts fuel racism gripes Sparked by art. Debate over yarn art gets personal as the Bushwick Flea’s founder is accused of racism. The fight over a wall overlooking a flea market in Bushwick escalated in recent days when the market’s critics used its founder’s social media posts to accuse him of being racist. Rob Abner, who operates the Bushwick Flea along Wyckoff Avenue every weekend, fended off claims that he is racist and that his market takes advantage of a neighborhood caught in the middle of a gentrification debate. Earlier this month, Abner oversaw the installation of a crocheted street art piece on a wall facing

his market that he does not have legal access to, drawing the ire of longtime residents who felt disrespected and taken advantage of by Abner. In response, a Facebook post circulated among neighbors and friends Sept. 18 captured a series of social media posts made by Abner between 2013 and August 2015 that praised mass deportations of African migrants in Israel (“Sounds like something we should try here,” he wrote) and theories of undocumented children bringing disease to the United States (writing, “Let’s just bring every third world disease here.”) Selected social media posts made it onto a flier taped along Wykcoff Avenue that read: “BOYCOTT BUSHWICK FLEA” and “RACISTS OUT OF BUSHWICK.”

No one Metro reached out to regarding the flier knew who printed them or when they were posted. On Thursday, Abner told Metro everything on the flier was a lie. “Everyone who knows me knows that the things on that flier are lies, and that’s all that matters,” he wrote in an email to Metro. “I am anti-ILLEGAL immigration. I think ILLEGAL immigration hurts us all.” Abner added that his grandparents were immigrants, and that Bushwick Flea celebrates the neighborhood’s diversity through its vendors and customers. “People can come judge for themselves,” he said. On Tuesday, Abner agreed to take down the 15-foot-tall yarn installation that featured caricatures of the twin girls

Worst hajj disaster in 25 years. More than 753 pilgrims die in crush At least 753 pilgrims from around the world were killed on Thursday in a crush outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Saudi authorities said, in the worst disaster to strike the annual hajj pilgrimage in 25 years. At least 863 others were injured. Saudi King Salman said he had ordered a review of haj plans after the disaster, in which two large groups of pilgrims arrived together at a crossroads in Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, on their way to performing the “stoning of the devil” ritual at Jamarat. Thursday’s disaster was the worst to occur

at the pilgrimage since July 1990, when 1,426 pilgrims suffocated in a tunnel near Mecca. Both incidents occurred on Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice), Islam’s most important feast and the day of the stoning ritual. Photographs published on the Twitter feed of Saudi civil defense on Thursday showed pilgrims lying on stretchers while emergency workers in highvisibility jackets lifted them into an ambulance. Other images showed bodies of men in white haj garments piled on top of each other. Some corpses bore visible injuries. REUTERS

Four killed, nine critical after bus crash on Seattle bridge Hurt. About 50 people were evaluated for injuries after the collision. At least four people were killed and nine critically injured on Thursday when an amphibious tour bus collided with a charter bus on a Seattle bridge, the city’s fire department said. The Aurora Bridge goes over a canal linking Lake Union with the Puget Sound’s Shilshole Bay. Local TV broadcast footage showed the front of the Ride the Ducks bus crumpled with debris on the ground from the impact with the other bus. Emergency personnel, including nearly 100 firefighters, were on the scene. A witness to the crash, Jesse Christenson, 32, saw the duck boat with its turn signal on trying to get in the left lane, and then it made a sharp move to the left. “I initially thought it was a [tire] blowout. duck boat then hit another car with a roof rack then went head on into the oncoming tour bus,” Christenson told the Seattle Times. Four people were killed, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins told reporters. The majority of the significant injuries were

from people who were on the tour bus, a fire department spokeswoman said. Two other passenger vehicles were involved in the crash, she said. Six patients were transported in critical condition to an area hospital and five more were expected there, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Ten other patients were dispersed to other hospitals, she said. REUTERS Quoted

Senate blocks Republican bill denying Planned Parenthood

Democrats in the U.S. Senate, joined by some Republicans, blocked an effort denying federal funds for Planned Parenthood in a move that could help avoid a government shutdown on Oct. 1. Most Senate Republicans had supported the plan to attach the Planned Parenthood defunding to a bill keeping government operating with the start of the new fiscal year. But 42 Democrats, two independents and eight Republicans banded together to stop the antiabortion COTTON effort

on a procedural vote, 11 more than the 41 needed to block the legislation. At least one of the Republicans, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, said he cast his vote against the bill to protest inadequate military funding. Just before the vote, the White House warned that President Barack Obama would veto legislation to continue funding the government if it strips away federal money for Planned Parenthood, setting up the showdown with antiabortion advocates. “By eliminating federal funding for a major provider of health care, the Senate amendment ... would limit access to health care for women, men and families across the nation, and disproportionately impact lowincome individuals,” the White House statement said. THE FUN STARTS HERE

How not to be scared of De Niro Anne Hathaway confesses she was — at first! — petrified of working with her “The Intern” costar. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

Robert De Niro is scary. That’s the line, anyway. In addition to his storied accomplishments, he’s quiet and careful with words, qualities that paint him as formidable. Even his “The Intern” co-star Anne Hathaway, an Oscar winner herself, was initially a little terrified of him. “I couldn’t talk around him for the first three weeks,” she recalls. “I just felt like an idiot with everything I said.”

But Hathaway soon found that De Niro’s reticence was, as their director, Nancy Meyers (“Something’s Gotta Give,” “It’s Complicated”), had told her, more zen than menace. “Bob’s good at having chemistry with people,” she says. “So I assumed that as long as I didn’t mess up I’d be OK.” As it happens, in “The Intern” their characters have something like the opposite arc — it’s Hathaway who’s the intimidating one. De Niro plays Ben Whittaker, a widower who takes advantage of a new trend toward hiring retirees as unpaid interns. He winds up at an online clothing startup founded and largely run, or at least micromanaged, by Hathaway’s Jules Ostin. She’s overworked and remote, but Ben finds a way to earn her trust and is soon

offering her advice. “I think it is [Meyers’] love letter to us, our generation,” De Niro says. “When you’re a certain age, you get older, you [feel] less relevant in some ways. That’s just not the case.” And, like her character, Hathaway herself learned a few things, not just from De Niro but also from Meyers. “When we started we saw the character in two different ways,” Hathaway remembers. “I wanted her to be wearing her stress on her sleeve; Nancy wanted her to have it more together. And then I thought, ‘Idiot. Who knows a Nancy Meyers character better than Nancy Meyers?’ It became this wonderful experience in being guided through a character, which is very new for me.” Once Hathaway surren-

dered her initial instincts to Meyers’ vision, she says she found a place of contentment. “Up till now I have made a lot of movies from insecurity and neuroses and s e l f - d o u b t ,” she explains. “I just got really tired of it, and I decided to make this from a more positive place, to feel good about what I was doing. It turns out you can make a movie without having nonstop sleepless nights.” Did De Niro have a similar epiphany? The actor responds, formidably, “I don’t think I learned anything about myself that I didn’t know already.”

Nancy Meyers is a saccharine, sometimes shameless filmmaker of transgressive ideas like: Maybe an older man such as Jack Nicholson should consider sleeping with women his age (“Something’s Gotta Give”); or, hey, middleaged people can have sex too (“It’s Complicated”). Her latest, “The Intern,” offers two solid, even weirdly necessary messages for the price of one. The first is that retirees have advice to offer the young (advice that isn’t tooooo old school, or retro-

grade, that is). The second, that women in positions of power shouldn’t feel bad about wielding it. As always, Meyers cakes these lessons in a broad, populist and not unentertaining blob that runs a little too long, is a little too soft around the edges and features at least one major misstep. But it’s more engaging than most of her movies. A constantly smiling Robert De Niro plays Ben, a widower who becomes an intern for a online clothing startup run by workaholic Jules (Anne Ha-

thaway). She’s stressed and remote, but Ben worms his way into her affections. If this was a film from another era — or simply another filmmaker — Ben would enter Jules’ life to teach her the value of knowing her place in the home and in society. But Ben doesn’t roll that way. Instead, he gives her pep talks and assures her that her wish to run her business the way she wants to is something she shouldn’t give up. If this is mansplaining, or oldsplaining, it’s at least promoting something good.

‘Stonewall’

Director: Roland Emmerich Stars: Jeremy Irvine, Jonny Beauchamp Rating: R

••••• The idea of a Stonewall riots film from the guy who made “Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow” isn’t, it might be insane to say, a terrible idea. The scuffle that birthed the gay rights movement in earnest deserves a splashy populist saga that uses the language of big, dumb mainstream movies to normalize it into cinematic myth. And yet, inexplicably, “Stonewall” isn’t much of a Roland Emmerich movie. It’s broad but rarely stirring, muted but not subtle. And it’s focused too tightly on a group that ultimately offers little insight into the gay

rights movement, while ignoring and even quietly tarnishing other parts of the movement. The heroes are the street kids — led by Jeremy Irvine’s Kansas newb — who helped start the riot at the Stonewall Inn. Despite often getting the blunt end of a nightstick, they’re also not particularly engaged politically. Meanwhile, the ones who are — like Jona-

than Rhys Meyers’ fiery activist — are portrayed as lecherous scoundrels who badmouth the eventual riot, winding up on the wrong side of history. The film itself is wrong about history, and it doesn’t even have the decency to keep the bad-great sex jokes (“I just ate two hot dogs.” “Want a third?”) going past the first five minutes. MP

‘The Green Inferno’

Director: Eli Roth Stars: Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy Rating: R

••••• “The Green Inferno” is sometimes over-hated horror brand Eli Roth’s possibly inevitable cannibal movie, and it holds its own in a sometimes dubious genre. It even quietly avoids some of its inherent, queasy problems. The biggest of those is how to portray savage natives without being xenophobic, if not racist. “The Green Inferno” portrays its indigenous Amazonian tribe as victims of corporations looking to level their home. They mistake our heroes — a cadre of naive Columbia University do-gooders,

“Spy Kids” and “World’s Greatest Dad” star Daryl Sabara finds himself broing with some cannibals in Eli Roth’s “The Green Inferno.” BH TILT PUBLICITY

out there to protest in their favor — as the bad guys. Some will be cooked, eaten and even worn as clothes, but not before being hacked up alive while howling — sights Roth delivers for requisite gorehound delectation. But though the tribesfolk are scary, there’s a respect. Roth’s contempt is for the students, and it’s palpable, though he doesn’t treat it as fun or enjoyable or

even as a sick kind of retribution as his noble but stupid heroes become cannibal chow. Roth can’t resist dumb gags, one including diarrhea, one including masturbation, one including weed. But there’s a refinement here as elsewhere in the Rothworld, even when one poor dude watches as a woman chief lovingly slurps down his severed tongue as if it were an oyster. MP

Twenty-one-year-old Nat Wolff has been in his fair share of coming-of-age movies. In “The Fault In Our Stars,” he grapples with being a recently dumped, blind teen. In “Paper Towns,” growing up means letting go of the elusive girl-next-door. In Wolff’s latest movie, “Ashby,” it means taking a punch from Mickey Rourke. “I panicked,” Wolff tells us. “I [thought], ‘If he hits me, I’m going to die. He has boxer hands.’” The reason for said punch: Rourke’s character is

Enter Rourke’s Ashby, a retired CIA assassin who lives next door. “They’re both figuring out what it means to be a man, what that means for the different generations,” Wolff says. “It’s a

growing up for both of us.”

Art imitating life Wolff says he grew up watching Rourke’s movies, and the opportunity to learn from the Oscarnominated actor is part of the reason he signed on to the film. On-screen, his tender-hearted character plays well off Rourke’s

rough-around-the-edges one, and Wolff says their relationship off-screen is similar to what’s portrayed in the film. At times, their in-real-life relationship bled into their fictional one: “On the last day of shooting we did a scene in the car where I was like, ‘Do you even care about me at all?’ and we had this [heartfelt] con-

a brief friendship can still profoundly affect one’s life, something Wolff learned years ago, because that pretty much sums up the whole movie-making experience. “I always find it heartbreaking to end [filming],” he says. “I feel empty and weird at the end because you give 100 percent to these other people that you didn’t even know before.”

From Bollywood to ABC Priyanka Chopra is ready to fight some crime on “Quantico.

If you haven’t heard of Priyanka Chopra, you’re in the minority, globally. While the actress might be unfamiliar to American audiences, she’s a hugely successful Bollywood star, and she had that little single with Pitbull (“Exotic) in 2013. But she’s about to become a lot more familiar. The 33-year-old is starring in ABC’s new show “Quantico, about a team of FBI recruits. The show jumps back and forth between the group training together and the aftermath of a terrorist attack one of them may have

caught in the middle of it when she’s suspected of being the perpetrator. “I’m definitely becoming more bad-ass. If I get into an alley fight, I’ll probably survive, jokes the actress about all the training she’s had to prepare for all the action sequences her character goes through. The show’s producers were so focused on making what Alex goes through realistic, they brought in some consultants who had worked with the FBI. “What was most surprising to me was, whenever you think of agents in the FBI, you think of people with guns with these insane

lives. But speaking to the consultants, I realized it was so human. They get so affected with the cases, Chopra says. “One was saying how affected he got with children’s cases and mindless terrorism, when there’s no reason for something bad to happen and evil does really exist. That really moved me. As far as who actually committed the crime in “Quantico? “I’ve told the writers not to tell me who the terrorist is because I don’t want to know, says Chopra. “It keeps me really fresh. Because it’s through Alex’s eyes they’re going to [find out].

It’s a really dierent experience to stay with one character.â€? But the workload is deďŹ nitely dierent: “I’ve only done features where it’s one scene in two days and it’s languid. ‘99 Homes’ offers an apocalyptic view of the house-flipping scene ‘99 Homes’ Director: Ramin Bahrani Stars: Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon Rating: R

••••• MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Like Donald Trump, Rick Carver knows how to get the downtrodden to act against their self-interest. Played by Michael Shannon, Rick is a devilish house-flipper introduced helping kick carpenter Nash (Andrew Garfield) out of his home. Then he hires him to do unto others what was done to him. Nash becomes Rick’s right-hand man, turning

Andrew Garfield goes from a guy who lost his house to foreclosure to a guy who helps kick people out of their homes due to foreclosure in Ramin Bahrani’s “99 Homes,” in theaters today. BROAD GREEN PICTURES

his desperation into empowerment, all while ignoring his raging guilt as he watches families forced into the same predicament he’s in, all for a mountain of quick bucks. “99 Homes” is the latest from Ramin Bahrani, the social realist of “Man Push Cart,” “Chop Shop” and “At Any Price.” He’s acutely

in tune with how the working class is manipulated by a society that sees the world as winners and losers. He’s also, perhaps inevitably, and perhaps rightly, a little close to fullon humorless. “99 Homes” plays as blackest comedy anyway. Its view of America is one pared down to an apocalyptic wasteland,

filled with empty homes newly owned by wealthy sharks. The only employed people seem to be the blue-collar types Rick hires, who take revenge on the once thriving middle class for chump change. Bahrani presents this plainly and clinically and frankly, though he can’t bear to end on a bum note. The way he closes it threatens to turn melodramatic and screenwriterly, and the final image is so onthe-nose it’s depressing in a different way than what preceded it. The optimism seems sincere but impossible to believe. Then again, it also doesn’t want to buy into Rick’s starkly pessimistic worldview. Not only is Bahrani not wrong about modern America, and the way the impoverished are swayed by charismatic monsters — he also knows how to make didacticism thrilling to watch.

PGA Tour

Tour will name Champ It’s a busy sports weekend, with a full slate of NFL action along with the second-to-last weekend of regular season baseball. And with the NHL and NBA seasons on the horizon, one sport will wrap up its regular season Sunday. The PGA’s season-long trek for the FedEx Cup will conclude after the Tour Championship in Atlanta, and five golfers have a good shot at winning the $10 prize bonus (in addition to regular tournament winnings). If new world No. 1 Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Ricky Fowler, Henrik Stenson or Bubba Watson post the lowest score after 72 holes Sunday, the winner becomes champion. The other 25 golfers have a chance, but need some help from other golfers.

Will Week 2’s top performers keep it up? The second week of the 2015 NFL season is in the books on FanDuel, and lucky us, another round of high-stakes fantasy football is just a few short days away. Before we turn our collective focus to Week 3, let’s take the opportunity to sharpen the priceless tool that is our hindsight, with one last look back at the top scorers, best value picks, and biggest busts of Week 2.

Giants grab first win in ripping of ’Skins NFL. The Giants were again sloppy late, but came away with a 32-21 win over Washington.

Week 2’s best value Cleveland wide receiver Travis Benjamin put up one of the most efficient games of the season to date in Week 2, turning just 4 targets into 3 catches for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns against a hapless Titans defense. The fact that he was priced at a mere $5,000 on FanDuel turned that economical production into the single most valuable performance yet this season. To put it in perspective, Benjamin’s value ratio of 6.2 fantasy points per thousand dollars in FanDuel salary would have equated to a score of 372 fantasy points across a full $60,000 salary cap. TRAVIS BENJAMIN - 31 FANTASY POINTS ($5,000)

Week 2’s biggest bust There’s no such excuse for why Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans sits with zero fantasy points through two weeks of the 2015 season. Evans missed Week 1, but was active in Week 2 against the Saints and still went without a catch on 3 targets from rookie QB Jameis Winston. Some of the blame certainly rests on the New Orleans offense doing so little that the Bucs only attempted 21 passes, but even with a salary reduction to $7,400 Evans is a risky play in Week 3 against the Texans. MIKE EVANS - 0 FANTASY POINTS THROUGH 2 WEEKS

Week 2’s champ FanDuel NFL Sunday Million tournament winner Jeremiah1974db avoided these busts and struck just the right balance of top scorers and values in Week 2, turning a $25 entry fee into a score of 209.66 points and a cool $1 million first place prize in his first ever FanDuel contest win.

The Giants aren’t exactly on a highway to Santa Clara, but Thursday night’s win over the division rival Redskins was certainly a step in the right direction. The G-Men trumped Washington, 32-21, to improve to 1-2 on the 2015 season. The Redskins are now also 1-2 in the lowly NFC East. Odell Beckham Jr.’s pretty 30-yard touchdown grab with 13:39 left in the fourth quarter put the Giants up 19 points. The Giants initially jumped out to a 12-0 lead after one quarter as Rashad Jennings blocked a Redskins punt and it resulted in a safety when it went out of the back of the end zone. Prince Amukamara soon-after jumped a route ran by Pierre Garcon and got himself an easy pick that led to an Andre Williams 1-yard touchdown run, and Josh Brown’s 35-yard field goal accounted for the first quarter dozen for

Yankees host White Sox

Yanks look to continue playoff push On Friday the Yankees will see the White Sox’ 22-yearold left-handed rookie Carlos Rodon again. Rodon has lowered his ERA from 5.00 to 3.78 in seven starts since Aug 11. C.C. Sabathia will be on the mound for the Yankees, and he has been just fine in his last two starts, allowing only one run in 12.2 innings pitched. The Yankees will face another lefty in John Danks on Saturday. Danks has had trouble keeping the ball in the park since Aug 18, allowing nine long balls in his last six starts (he is 1-4 in that span). Brett Gardner and

New York. Uani Unga also picked off Washington QB Kirk Cousins, with his INT coming in the third quarter when the Redskins were driving and looking to close an 18-6 gap. New York held Washington to a pair of second quarter field goals before both teams had something of a scoring flurry in the fourth quarter. Washington’s Chris Thompson had a four-yard TD grab

and Rashad Ross had a 101-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Sandwiched in between those scores was a 41-yard touchdown catch by the Giants’ Rueben Randle. Eli Manning was an efficient 23-of-32 for 279 yards, two TDs and zero picks. MATT BURKE @Burke_Metro sports@metro.us

Mets head to Ohio

Alex Rodriguez are just 4 for 28 combined against Danks. Adam Warren goes for the Yankees again, and he has demonstrated why he wasn’t in the rotation when the season started. He’s gone just 7.1 innings in two starts, allowing 11 hits and five runs in those two games. Hopefully for New York, Masahiro Tanaka recovers from his strained hamstring sooner than later. Sunday’s finale will feature Jeff Samardzija for Chicago and Luis Severino for the Yankees. Samardzija has struggled to get anything going this year but is fresh off an 88-pitch shutout of the Tigers on Monday afternoon. This will be Severino’s first start against the White Sox. ROBERT CRISCOLA

Mets are close to clinching division There will be rookie pitchers galore in the Mets-Reds series this weekend. Friday, a pair of freshmen will do battle as the Reds’ Anthony DeSclafani faces the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard is coming off a rough start against the Yankees in which he allowed a three-run homer to Carlos Beltran in the first inning in a 5-0 loss. The series continues on Saturday, and Matt Harvey is scheduled to start for the Mets. Since he is still under a muchballyhooed innings limit, it would be surprising

to see him pitch more than five innings, so the bullpen could once again be burdened more than usual. The Reds’ star players have done well in the limited opportunities they’ve had vs. Harvey; Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Devin Mesoraco are a combined 7-for-20 with a home run. John Lamb answers for Cincinnati. The series concludes on Saturday as Jacob deGrom squares off with Keyvius Sampson. DeGrom has had a great season, but he has a 6.41 ERA in his last five starts. He’ll be pitching on 12 days’ rest so we’ll see if a little rest was the answer to deGrom’s problem. deGrom has never faced the Reds. ROBERT CRISCOLA

NFL. Panthers, Browns are safe bets in Week 3 action

Some more picks

Here’s a look at the rest of Week 3’s slate of games and how we think they’ll go (picks in bold):

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-2.5)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Houston Texans (-6.5)

San Diego Chargers at Minnesota Vikings (-2.5)

We think Cam Newton will lead Carolina to a win Sunday. / GETTY IMAGES

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers (-3) I’m not necessarily buying into the Panthers after wins over the Jaguars and Texans, but I am definitely selling on the Saints. Drew Brees was looked at by Dr. James Andrews during the week, and while he found nothing that required surgery, Brees is definitely less than 100 percent. I don’t want a balky Brees (or Saints backup Luke McCown) going against the stalwart Panthers defensive unit, which has allowed the fifth-fewest YPG in the league despite facing the most plays from scrimmage in two games. Cam Newton, who has looked good to start the 2015 season, should be able to march his offense down the field at will against the perennially putrid Saints stoppers. The pick: Panthers -3 Oakland Raiders at Cleveland Browns (-3.5) It was cool to see the Raiders grab a win as big home underdogs last week, but they’re in for a dose of reality as they travel to the “Dawg Pound” this Sunday. Josh McCown is getting the nod at QB for the Browns despite Johnny Manziel’s great game against the Titans last week, but it doesn’t really matter who’s starting because the Raiders are bringing

their NFL-worst defense to town. Oakland is a dreadful 1-19 in its last 20 road games, and the last time the Raiders were underdogs of fewer than six points on the road was December of 2013, when they lost to the Jets. The Browns look like the bargain of the week. The pick: Cleveland -3.5 Denver Broncos (-2.5) at Detroit Lions The Broncos’ opportunistic defense has been instrumental in the team’s 2-0 start, but Peyton Manning has not been as bad this season as people will have you believe. The main reason for Manning’s shaky beginning has been the pressure applied by the aggressive Ravens and Chiefs defenses. But Manning’s two-minute drill in Kansas City in Week 2 demonstrated that Peyton is far from done. Meanwhile, the Lions have looked listless in two road losses to the Chargers and Vikings, and although Detroit has been much better at home the last few years, their defense that was one of the best in the league in 2014 is now amongst the dregs of the NFL. Expect Denver to make a statement with a convincing win in the Motor City. The pick: Denver -3. ROBERT CRISCOLA

Don’t look now but the Jets are 2-0 and have a very winnable game if they show up and perform this Sunday at home against the Eagles. For Jets head coach Todd Bowles, it is an intriguing game. He was the Eagles defensive coordinator in 2012 and he played his college football in Philadelphia at Temple. When Andy Reid was fired as head coach following the 2012 season, Bowles wasn’t seriously considered for the job even though he was well-respected and had been the interim head coach of the Dolphins the year before. “It was probably one of the biggest learning experiences I went through

from a leadership standpoint,” Bowles said this week. “Watching coach Reid stand up there and address the team every day with the tragedy that happened to him and the way the team was going, and not bat an eye, just made everything status quo and go on as usual showed true leadership. It was all about the team. He never made it about himself. From coach Reid in that standpoint, I learned a great deal. The way their organization handles everything with Mr. [Jeff] Lurie and Howie Roseman, that taught me a great deal about respect, about leadership and about humility.” Now on Sunday, Bowles will have the chance to show the organization that had employed him the mistake they made in not considering him. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

The pass rush Even without Sheldon Richardson, suspended by the league for the first four games, the Jets are still doing a good job of pressuring the quarterback. They have just four quarterback sacks to start the year but they’re among the best in the league in completion percentage allowed (56.5 percent) and their 10 turnovers this year are largely due to the pressure they’re creating. The Eagles have done a decent job of protecting their quarterback but he has already thrown four interceptions. If the Jets can generate a good blitz on Sunday, they could create more turnovers against an offense that has the potential to be very good, even when beat up.

Wide receiver depth

With Eric Decker possibly out and Chris Owusu deďŹ nitely missing this game, it will be time for Devin Smith to step-up and Jeremy Kerley to get a chance to shine. Smith, injured in training camp, has yet to make his NFL debut but boasts big-play potential. And then there is the curious case of Kerley, a star for the team the past two years who is barely playing and doesn’t have a catch yet this season.

To reserve your space or for more information about this FREE seminar, please call: (866) 233-9368.

Don’t expect the Jets to change their philosophy on oense just because they’re 2-0. This is a team that will run the football and take what is open underneath, systematically marching down the ďŹ eld, perfectly content to eat up the clock and move the chains. This isn’t the game to change that formula or try getting the ball down the ďŹ eld. The

Eagles still have an up-tempo oense and the Jets generating some long drives is important to keep their defense o the ďŹ eld. They also can wear down an Eagles defense that is thin in terms of depth. If the Jets can open some holes, this could be a game where they can wear down their opponent. But the Jets do need to start o stronger, having just one touchdown in the opening quarter as they head into Week 3.
