Fourteen people have died amid historic rainfall in South Carolina, the state’s governor said on Tuesday, as residents grappled with the damage wrought by flooding on their homes, roads and water supply. Predictions of sunny skies in coming days provided only small comfort, as more than 800 people remained in shelters after floodwaters forced them from their homes. Officials said more evacuations were likely as several rivers remained above flood stage and dams were being monitored for breaches. REUTERS

OBITUARY Advertising giant Sheldon Kravitz passes away New York advertising businessman Sheldon Kravitz, the former Trans World Airlines head of advertising and music enthusiast, died on Oct. 3. He was 85 years old. Kravitz was born in
Brooklyn, and attended medical school and worked as a lawyer before he jumped into advertising. “He was a titan of the industry,” said Ed Abrams, associate publisher of Metro New York. “Everyone knew him and loved him.” In a 2013 profile, the Epoch Times described Kravitz as “the original Mad Man,” noting he “grew up in the
jazz era, played trumpet [and] partied with Frank Sinatra.” He was also “on friendly terms” with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. when he lived in Las Vegas, the article said. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lori, and his 15-year-old son Daniel. There will be a graveside service at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, 1 p.m.. on Wednesday.
Parks get $285M fix

The city is doubling its financial commitment in an effort to revamp parks in low-income communities across the five boroughs with a $285 million commitment through 2019, the mayor and Parks Department announced Tuesday. But a new report by research and advocacy group New Yorkers for Parks found that poverty does not necessarily mean lack of access to green space. “It’s very interesting, some of the highest poverty areas have above access to parkland, and others have less [access] in low poverty districts,” said Tupper Thomas of New Yorkers for Parks, which released the numbers last week. “It keeps going back and forth, and these are the areas we should be concentrating on and looking at — more access to open space.” Mayor Bill de Blasio and Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver announced the additional funding for the Community Parks Initiative on Tuesday. The city is investing a total of $285 million in capital dollars through 2019 to
re-create 67 total parks. There were 12 new sites announced on Tuesday, and an additional 20 parks will be added to the list over the next three years. The city previously announced 35 parks would receive funding for much-needed improvements. The 2015 City Council District Profiles ranks all 51 council districts on parkland acreage, walking distance and poverty. By poverty breakdown, Council District 14 — which includes the Fordham, Kingsbridge, Morris Heights, West Bronx and University Heights neighborhoods — has the highest amount of children on public assistance, but ranks No. 1 in access. The 56 acres of parkland makes up 5 percent of the district — 0.3 acres of parkland per district resident. Walton Park in District 14 is included in the list of new parks, and Councilman Fernando Cabrera said the resources are both “timely and necessary.” By contrast, Council District 4, which has the lowest poverty rate and includes the Upper East Side, Grand Central and Stuyvesant Town, is just 2 percent parkland, and 49 percent of residents are within walking distant of a park. The most New Yorkers within a five-minute walk of parks is Council District 9, and the least is Council District 51.

This isn’t your grandmother’s bingo. Bushwick City Farm, an all-volunteer-run community garden and gathering space, located at 354 Stockton St., will be hosting its first-annual Chicken S--t Bingo fundraiser later this month. The Oct. 18 event involves feeding the garden’s dozen chickens a plentiful meal and then letting them run around on a life-size bingo board, according to the farm. Attendees pay $5 for two squares, and then wait for the birds to defecate

on the squares. There will be prizes for bingo winners, and all proceeds will go toward the operation of the farm. “The farm has become a real community space,” James Telfer, one of the farm stewards said. “People of all different backgrounds and ethnicities come together here to work, play, grow food and eat. They might not ever interact with each other other-
wise. It’s community building at a fundamental level. There’s a lot of talk about how to fight gentrification. We think talking to your neighbors is a good starting point,” he said. The event was first reported in Brooklyn City paper. Along with the all the chicken poop, there will be music, drinks, cargo bike hayrides, pumpkin carving and a raffle during the festivities, which last
from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you still have an appetite after seeing all of that chicken scat, you can chow down on grub from new North Carolina BBQ joint Arrogant Swine, which will be selling plates for $5. The eatery will also host an after-party in its backyard. Though admission is free, $10 VIP presale tickets get you $15 worth of food or booze at the event. Visit Bushwick City Farm on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 to 6 p.m. to purchase. Chicken s--t bingo is not the brainchild of Bushwick City Farm. The unique twist on the traditional game has been going on for years at a bar in Texas. On Sundays, the Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin offers the game for $2 a ticket, entertaining locals, and even reaching international notoriety.

Progress on 125th Street slow Push by city to clean up the area. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria
chester.soria@metro.us
The steps in front of J.J. Williams’s apartment building on 124th Street near Lexington Avenue were clean Tuesday morning. In the three years he’s lived in the Harlem building, he said he became used to it becoming a urinal for substance abusers and homeless in the area. “We’re not just going to let you do that,” Williams said, blaming much of the problem in his neighborhood on the synthetic marijuana boom that has hit New York City’s poor and homeless hard. The area around 125th Street, especially near Park Avenue and close to
the Metro-North tracks, became ground zero in recent months for lawmakers looking to address the combination of homelessness and substance abuse. Progress is slow, but some residents’ optimism remains high. Streets are cleaner, they say, and the city is listening. “It was a war zone,” said one of William’s neighbors, who asked not to be identified. “Every morning I’d find people sleeping, urinating or defecating at our

As a result, the neighborhood has seen an increase in the Sanitation Department’s presence. The city’s health and homelessness departments surveyed people in the neighborhood. The MTA agreed to replace previously installed subway grate structures designed to prevent flooding, which inadvertently became benches and beds, by 2016. “What’s been happening at 125th has been happening for a long time,” Mark-Viverito told Metro. “Our city agencies have shown a level of engagement with each other that we’ve never seen before. We’ve identified the problems, come together collaboratively and the work is being done.”

but steady In late September, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton committed 38 full-time officers to the area, attributing many of the K2-related problems to methadone clinics, homeless shelters and transitional housing; East Harlem has the highest concentration of social services in the city. Both Williams and his neighbor dismissed concerns by local activists upset with NYPD and its treatment of homeless in the area. “We need the police,” the neighbor said. “It’s a big difference when [homeless] see the police are around. Without the police, there’s nothing going to get done.” Around the corner from Williams’ apartment building, two police officers attempted to calm a man in front of 2027 Lexington. Two men made an exchange steps from the distracted officers right in
front of the building that inside offers transitional housing for homeless. Williams said he feels for those he comes across struggling to make ends meet and relying on synthetic marijuana, also known as K2, to pass the time. But he said he and his neighbors won’t be treated with disrespect. Mark-Viverito admitted there’s still plenty of work to do. The city is trying to coordinate with the state Health Department over what can be done with at least two methadone clinics in the area. Albany oversees contracts for methadone treatment. Conversations are continuing, she said, but the speaker hopes the state would consider distributing treatment centers more evenly throughout the city. State officials did not respond to Metro for comment.

U.S. authorities charged a former president of the United Nations General Assembly, a billionaire Macau real estate developer and four others on Tuesday for engaging in a wide-ranging corruption scheme. John Ashe, a former U.N. ambassador from Antigua and Barbuda who was general assembly president from 2013 to 2014, was accused in a complaint filed in federal court in New York of taking more than $1.3 million in bribes from Chinese businessmen, including developer Ng Lap Seng. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is “shocked and deeply troubled by the allega-
tions, said his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric. The U.N. had not previously been informed of the probe, Dujarric said, but would cooperate if contacted. The case followed the Sept. 19 arrest of Ng, 68, and an assistant, Jeff Yin, 29, for falsely claiming that $4.5 million they brought into the United States from China from 2013 to 2015 was meant for gambling or buying art, antiques or real estate. Both men are charged in the latest case. Bharara said authorities continue to examine the funds
more than $500,000 for telling the U.N. secretary general that a yet-to-be built multibillion-dollar U.N.-sponsored conference center in Macau was needed. The intermediaries included Francis Lorenzo, 48, a deputy U.N. ambassador from the Dominican Republic, and Yin, who told authorities that Ng viewed the conference center as his legacy and made payments to get U.N. action on it, the complaint said. Ashe, 61, also received more than $800,000 from Chinese businessmen to support their interests within the U.N. and Antigua, and kicked some of the money to Antigua’s then-prime minister, the complaint said. The complaint said those bribes were arranged through Shiwei Yan, also known as Sheri Yan, chief executive officer of a New York-based nonprofit, and Heidi Hong Piao, also known as Heidi Park, its finance director.
“If proven, today’s charges will confirm that the cancer of corruption that plagues too many local and state governments infects the United Nations as well. Bharara

Jimmy Carter is mediating dispute between MLK heirs King’s sons want to sell their father’s possessions, while his daughter is against the sale.
Former President Jimmy Carter is helping settle a dispute between Martin Luther King Jr.’s children over whether to sell King’s 1964 Nobel Peace Prize medal and the Bible he carried during the civil rights movement. King’s sons, Martin Luther King III and Dexter King, want to sell their father’s possessions, while the late civil rights leader’s surviving daughter, Bernice King, opposes the sale, calling the items “sacred.” Earlier this year, a judge in Georgia approved mediation to resolve the legal fight after attorneys in the case said they were close to an agreement and that a mediator would help finish it. Carter, who is 91 and undergoing treatment for cancer that has spread to his brain, said in a statement he was optimistic about his work with King’s children. He met with them on Monday at the Carter Center in Atlanta. “I am honored to be working with the King family in an effort to resolve the outstanding legal issues relating to their remarkable family legacy,” said Carter, who played a key role in Middle East peace negotiations during his presidency and also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. In a joint statement released after Monday’s meeting, the King siblings said, “We are truly honored and encouraged

by President Carter’s involvement and we look forward to a positive resolution.” Carter and the King
family said they would have no further comment because the mediation is confidential. Martin III and Dexter, acting as majority board members of their father’s estate, voted last year to sell the Peace Prize and Bible, which was used by President Barack Obama during his second inauguration. The King estate then sued Bernice King after she refused to turn over the items. A judge later ordered her to surrender the Bible and medal to the court for safe keeping while the dispute was resolved. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, four years before he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. REUTERS

He said rising threats in Afghanistan from the Islamic State and al Qaeda were among factors informing his recommendations to the White House on future troop levels. Saturday’s strike on an Afghan hospital run by Doctors Without Borders killed 22 people and deeply angered the medical charity. Doctors Without Borders officials have blamed the United States, demanding an independent investigation into the incident and calling it a war crime. Campbell said U.S. forces had responded to a request from Afghan forces and provided close air support as they engaged in a fight with Taliban militants in Kunduz, a provincial capital the Taliban captured late last month. “To be clear, the decision to provide aerial fires was a U.S. decision made within the U.S. chain of command,

“We would never intentionally target a protected medical facility. Campbell
Campbell said in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee. He added that U.S. special forces nearby were communicating with the aircraft that delivered the strikes. “A hospital was mistakenly struck, Campbell said. Campbell’s comments were the most direct acknowledgement yet by
the U.S. government that the strike on the hospital was carried out by U.S. forces. In a statement Monday, Campbell said only that U.S. forces had responded to a request for support from Afghan forces. President Barack Obama expected steps to be taken to prevent such an incident from recurring, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday. The government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, heavily dependent on Washington for military support and far less critical of the United States than his predecessor, Hamid Karzai, has held back from directly criticizing the United States. Advanced Knee Arthritis Treatment Offers New Hope For Pain Sufferers In New York City
Nothing Spreads The Word Like Caring Doctors and Results - Knee arthritis sufferers have swarmed the OsteoRelief Center in Manhattan, NYC and Norhtern New j Jersey ever since word got out of their advanced medical procedure for knee arthritis
Viscosupplementation. This all sounds great - in theory. But there is a BIG problem with this treatment. Allow Me To Explain... While doing research on this treatment, I traveled to amedical clinic in New York City, This clinic had an excellent reputation and I got to speak not only with doctors but with several patients who ranted and raved about the results. Many said they had tried countless other treatments in the past... including viscosupplementation... but nothing worked until they had viscosupplemtation at this clinic. I was skeptical, so I asked one of the doctors why. How could it be possible that the same treatment that did not work when done elsewhere... was getting results when done here? His response was honest and a little shocking. And the bottom line was... “All Doctors Are Human And Sometimes They Mess Up” I discovered that this treatment must be VERY
PRECISE. In other words, the doctor must be very accurate and actually get the lubricating fluid precisely into the arthritic joint space or the treatment will be rendered useless. Many doctors do not want to admit it - but it is very easy to miss the joint space and alter the treatment results. In fact, research shows that doctors doing these types of joint procedures without advanced imaging may miss the joint space as much as 30% of the time.
Technology To The Rescue Thankfully technology is solving this problem. How? It’s making doctors much more accurate and this treatment much more effective. Advanced imaging is now available that allows doctors to actually see directly into the joint space and watch the treatment. Doctors can see, or check, if the lubricating fluid goes directly into the joint space - or misses. The doctor knows if the applied treatment has been a success... or failure... INSTANTLY.

Meyer insists that the idea behind the new version was to strike back against criticism that the initial series was antifeminist. “Gender and species aside, ‘Twilight’ has always been a story about the magic and obsession and frenzy of first love,” Meyer tells “Good Morning America.” “So I thought to myself, what if I put that theory to the test?” Or maybe it was just because, you know, money. Or because she needed to do something after “The Host” didn’t really pan out.

Michael Shannon: Ignore Trump Michael Shannon helps bring a piece of gay marriage history to life in “Freeheld.
Bonus question How much does playing a real person impact your performance? It was huge to meet Dane — and yet the second I met Dane, I realized there was no way in the world I’d be able to be exactly like him. We’re completely dierent, physically. Dane also said in our meeting, “I’m not really concerned about you being exactly like me. The point is telling the world about Laurel and Stacie.â€? Dane’s a very humble man. He’s not looking for attention himself. But it was critical. I can’t imagine playing someone and not meeting them — if they’re still alive to meet.
NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

“Freeheld features Michael Shannon alongside Julianne Moore and Ellen Page telling the true story of detective Laurel Hester (Moore), who fought to get her police pension awarded to her partner, Stacie Andree (Page) in New Jersey in 2005 after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Shannon, who plays her supportive partner, has a personal connection to the story that made the fight for marriage equality a no-brainer. It’s interesting to think how this battle has evolved since 2005. It’s such a simple thing, such a simple plea for decency and human respect. Laurel devoted a huge portion of her life to protecting and taking care of her community, and she just wanted the same for herself. I don’t know — I don’t see how people can be unmoved. Has the recent Supreme Court decision changed your view on the story?
Shannon as Dane Wells in “Freeheld. PHIL CARUSO
Yeah, but there’s still a stigma. And there’s still dissent. There’s still people that want to act like the Supreme Court was wrong. Like in my glorious home state of Kentucky. It never stops being topical, but there’s definitely a momentum. It seems like we’re real close to getting over it. Because it’s silly. It’s silly that so much pain and angst comes out of how people choose to love one another. I can understand being mad at somebody because they hurt somebody or they disregard other
people’s experience or whatever, but to have an issue with somebody because of how they choose to love is really perplexing to me. My oldest sister is gay, and she’s married and they’ve adopted a couple of kids, and they’re just a beautiful family. It’s never bothered me in the slightest. She’s my sister. Some would say it’s disregarding others’ experience. I mean, it’s bizarre because, honestly, there are people that are tremendously afflicted in straight
relationships. The capacity or ability for people to suffer is probably even more prevalent in a neofundamentalist Christian 50-year marriage than it is in any other sort of human relationship. Do dissenters get more vocal as they ame out? The number is getting smaller, the number of ‌ I want to say idiots. It’s shrinking. That’s American culture, creating the drama. It’s the same thing with Trump. The media is playing right into his hands. He says controver-
sial things and then you pump it up, make it a story, and the next thing you know, the guy’s president. Just ignore him. Don’t give him a platform. It’s like putting a plant in a pot of soil. You should be yanking it out, throwing it on the sidewalk. GETTY IMAGES

Still digital after all these years Bringing back the World Trade Center
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Philippe Petit, the man who tightrope-walked between the Twin Towers in 1974, in Robert Zemeckis’ “The Walk,” now playing in IMAX theaters. SONY
With “The Walk,” a legendary filmmaker embraces the real and the fake. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Robert Zemeckis doesn’t like talking themes and ideas. What the filmmaker — of “Back to the Future,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” “Forrest Gump” and now “The Walk” — most likes to talk about is the technical side. He was an early embracer of digital effects, and even dramas like “Flight” tend to feature extensive use of subtle CGI. “The Walk” is about half real and half CGI, relating the stranger-thanfiction tale of how French acrobat Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) strolled across a tightrope strung between the Twin Towers all the way back in 1974.
Could you even make “The Walk” without relying on CGI? I don’t even know how you’d do it at all. I guess you could use miniatures. Back in the old days, you’d use miniatures and process screens. It certainly would have been very limiting. Some of the CGI here is about recreating things that no longer exist, like the Twin Towers. In the past, they would just build a set. Just because it’s digital doesn’t mean it costs nothing. You have to understand that. People can say things like, “Oh, a microphone dropped into the shot. Screw it, move on. We’ll paint it out later.” Well, that costs money. Filmmakers have to be careful that they don’t get sloppy, figuring they can change everything.
Right after the Sept. 11 attacks, there was a movement to ignore the Towers. But in “The Walk,” showing them no longer feels like an affront. I don’t know why they would have removed the World Trade Center, because that becomes a historical document, which is vital and important. That’s the way I approached this. The movie took place in 1974; the Twin Towers were there. The memory of the World Trade towers is very tragic, but there are also things that happened there that are beautiful, like what Philippe did. So it’s like anything that doesn’t exist anymore. You can’t only remember it for the dark things. You have to remember it for everything.

“American Horror Story is about to get all “The Shining on us. The show has visited an asylum, a traveling carnival and a witches’ coven, and the latest installment will take place in an old, probably haunted hotel in Los Angeles. True to creator Ryan Murphy’s M.O., there will be familiar faces showing up, such as Sarah Paulson and
Kathy Bates. But there are also new ones, including Lady Gaga as the blood-sucking proprietor of the hotel and Wes Bentley, best known for “The Hunger Games and “American Beauty, as the poor detective tasked with solving the mystery. We talked with Bentley — as well as a few other Murphy regulars — about what to expect from this season. You get to investigate what’s going on with the hotel, right? Yeah, it’s a series of grisly murders I’ve tracked down, which leads me to the hotel to try to check in there — also, because of other issues at home.
Never a happy marriage on “AHS, right? No, that would be too easy. Does Ryan Murphy leave you in the dark about upcoming plot points? Yeah, and I don’t mind being in the dark. I mean, big backstory stuff I do know. There was a loss [in Bentley’s character’s family] and a few other things that I’m not going to say. But as far as what comes in the future, I’m not sure I want to know until it comes up. I think it’s more fun to play. You want to be freaked out, just the same as the audience. I do. I read the first two [episodes] and I had

nightmares because I read them at night. And after I’ve been shooting, it’s been affecting my dreams as well. I’m not a nightmare guy, so [the episodes] are quite scary and psychologically terrifying, which for me is what draws me to horror. When you’re on the hotel set, how much does it feel like an actual hotel?
Checking in with Matt Bomer What kinds of creepy stu will you be getting up to this season? I think the given circumstances in and of themselves of the character are pretty creepy. One of the things I’ve found that also may be implicitly creepy about this season is that
the hotel really feels like a character in and of itself, and there is something about being outside of your traditional home that creates an environment that in some ways is dictated by others. I think that I always ďŹ nd that creepy when I’m staying in other places.

Retake the floor

It’s understandable to sweep some home projects under the rug. Painting is daunting, organizing the basement is worse and pretty much anything involving the roof costs twice as much as you’re prepared to shell out. That said, there are plenty of small improvements and minor undertakings that you — yes, you, ye of little faith and fewer tools — could easily knock out this weekend.

Makeover that Ikea bookcase
No judging here: Most people have a cheapie bookcase. But a quick coat of paint transforms this dorm room staple, while a wallpaper background makes it look positively chic.
3
About those window treatments …
Level 1: Wash your curtains, and try not to be grossed out by what a difference this makes. Level 2: Buy new curtains already. Level 3: Upgrade your hardware and prepare to be amazed.
A new rug can change the feel of a room for a fraction of the cost of new furniture. Don’t be shy — it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new without worrying about a long-term investment.
7
Update cabinet hardware
Plenty of good things came out of the ’80s, but kitchen cabinets aren’t on that list. If a remodel isn’t in the budget, try swapping out the hardware for a minimakeover. Sometimes, a little brushed brass goes a long way. Or, scour Etsy for oneof-a-kind knobs.

Replace your showerhead
The only thing standing between you and a rainfall shower is $60 and a trip to Home Depot. Go forth and luxuriate.
Organize the entryway
You know that pile of boots, umbrellas and unopened mail next to the front door? It doesn’t have to be that way. A shoe rack, shelf and a couple of stylish hooks are all that’s separating you from the good life.
You deserve better than the lame-o showerhead your apartment came with.

We’ve seen the future of luxury residences, and it includes robot butlers. At least according to 520 West 28th, the fancy apartment building going up along the High Line by famed architect Zaha Hadid. The woman behind such works as the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the controversial Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadium — whose renderings critics have compared to part of the female anatomy — was in town yesterday to fete the construction of her first building in the Big Apple. “I’ve wanted to do something here in New York for 35 years,” she said. “I used to show in a gallery on, I think, 23rd Street, and whenever I went there we would always talk about the High Line, so it was very nice to do this project.”
This building is being constructed through the Low-Income Affordable Marketplace Program (LAMP) of the New York City Housing Development Corporation and the 421-a Affordable Housing Program of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Not cheaply, but still buildable.” Prices range from $4.95 million to $50 million for the penthouse, but Gushee says buyers are already showing interest. Cooking with Fabio
Fabio Viviani keeps the cooking low-stress so the pleasure of a dinner party — the conversation — can flow. PROVIDED
A modern meal is about quality ingredients and not spending all night in the kitchen. EVA KIS @thisiskis
eva.kis@metro.us
The sounds coming from the Food52 kitchen are Motown — not chosen by “Top Chef” fan favorite Fabio Viviani. He prefers the energy of heavy metal, like Kiss and Poison, though “AC/DC is good, but it’s too complicated for cooking.” It helps that he’s working with the foods of his homeland: Grana Padano and Montasio cheeses, and the prosciuttos of San Daniele and Parma. “I grew up with these ingredients,” says the Florence-born Viviani. “For me it’s not even work. For me it’s,
‘Keep eating prosciutto di Parma.’” Not winning “Top Chef” (twice) hasn’t dampened his ambitions — he talks about them like blips on the radar of his career, which began at the age of 11 when he started (unofficially) working at a bakery in Florence. Viviani has several restaurants here and in Italy, as well as his own line of wines (“I’ve been a wine drinker for the last 30 years, and I’m 36!”) and cookware. Things get more complicated once Viviani gets behind the chef’s counter, trying to fire up the stove. In the end, he has to have one of the staff explain the induction cooktop. “What does 9 mean? I know medium heat but is 9, like, purgatory?” “I cook with fire; I can’t cook with technology,” he jokes. “That’s why I teach, ‘Cook with
common sense, not technology.’” As an entertainer (as chefs have always been, though moreso now) Viviani stresses pleasing guests not just when they take a bite but throughout the cooking process. When it comes to dinner parties at home, “It’s not the time to impress anybody with a lengthy cooking technique, that’s done.” “People are sick and tired of spending too much time in the kitchen for something,” he continues. “At the end of the day you’re putting in your mouth and chewing and eating.” That kitchen common sense builds up one recipe at a time, so pick something simple, get quality ingredients, and just start cooking. Take it from him: “I’m a firm believer that good food, it’s very simple to make.”
Montasio and Tomato Tarts Ingredients: •1 1/2 pints grape or cherry tomatoes, halved •1 cup coarsely grated Montasio cheese, divided •1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed •1/4 cup dry white wine •1 shallot, sliced •1 tsp Dijon mustard •2 tbsp olive oil •1/2 tsp kosher salt •1/4 tsp black pepper
ISTOCK
Directions: Heat oven to 400°F. Unfold the pastry on parchment paper and flatten with a rolling pin, then prick all over with a fork. Place on a baking sheet. In a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, warm the oil. Add tomatoes, shallot, salt and pepper. Cook, tossing occasionally, until
tomatoes begin to release their juices (4 to 5 minutes). Add wine; cook until nearly evaporated, about 1 minute. Sprinkle the pastry with half the Montasio, leaving a half-inch border. Brush borders with mustard; spread tomato mixture over cheese. Bake until golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

A rested Patriots team will now travel to Dallas to face a decimated Cowboys team that has nonetheless showed fight the last two weeks against Atlanta and New Orleans. That being said, an upset against New England is still unlikely.
Denver is still undefeated, but the Peyton Manning question appears to be an open ended one, and results will vary from week to week. Unlike the last Denver team we saw make the Super Bowl, though, this one is led by its defense, and their results haven’t varied.
Are the Falcons for real? After a game where they took a 42-0 lead on Houston, it seems they might be. This week, they even did it without needing Julio Jones’ demigod impersonation at wide receiver. They have a good chance to move to 5-0 with the Redskins next up.
If St. Louis could play their division every week they’d be golden. This is their second impressive victory in a very young season (led by Nick Foles and his three touchdowns), but it doesn’t reconcile with the team that got beat up by the Redskins. Who are they?
Their 17 penalties for 135 yards will tell you a lot about what happened in upstate New York on Sunday in their loss to the Giants. The Bills’ run game struggled without LeSean McCoy, and that better get fixed, because chances are they’re going to be without him for a while.

Packers (4-0)
Bengals (4-0)
Cardinals (3-1)
Panthers (4-0)
Seahawks (2-2)
Jets (3-1)
It was another cold, efficient dispatching of an opponent by the Packers. And sure, the Niners are nothing to write home about, but they and Colin Kaepernick have significantly troubled Green Bay in the past, dating back to blowing past them in the NFC Championship game. Not so this year.
The Bengals are building a more and more impressive résumé and more and more space between themselves and the Steelers in the AFC North. Andy Dalton, who had thrown 37 interceptions over the past two seasons, now has just one through four games.
Count this as the first dent in the armor for a team that had looked unstoppable. It’s tough to lose the turnover battle, 3-0, and win a game, but the Cardinals almost pulled it off. Larry Fitzgerald is reemerging as a gamechanging wideout. He leads the NFL with five TDs and is third with 432 yards.
The Panthers get a big test in two weeks in Seattle following their bye in Week 5. If they can drop a so-so Seahawks team, it’ll go a long way to reinforcing that it doesn’t matter how this team wins, as long as it wins. It will be their first true test amid an easy schedule to start.
The Seahawks got two gifts this weekend that got it the win: one from the Rams, and the other from the refs. Now Kam Chancellor is back and they’re just one game behind the Cardinals in the NFC West. The struggling run game will be helped if Marshawn Lynch returns Sunday.
The Jets sent the Dolphins to the AFC East basement for good. Running up the middle works a lot better as a game-plan when you have Chris Ivory around to do the running. Brandon Marshall also continues to be the deep threat the Jets have always wanted.

Yanks blanked by Astros, 2015 comes to close The Yankees’ bats didn’t show up in a 3-0 wild card loss to Houston. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

The Yankees’ surprisingly strong spring and stellar summer didn’t translate into any fall success as New York lost, 3-0, Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium and was eliminated from the postseason. In the first post-Jeter season, the Alex Rodriguez redemption tour was the main attraction all year long, but much like the Yankees as a whole, A-Rod

fell flat in the wild card game against Houston. When the Yanks had Astros starter Dallas Keuchel on the ropes in the sixth inning Tuesday, A-Rod’s fly out to center ended the threat. A-Rod also struck out in the ninth. The young Astros jumped ahead early as Colby Rasmus golfed one into the Stadium seats in right
on the first pitch he saw from Masahiro Tanaka in the second inning. Carlos Gomez also went yard off of Tanaka, his homer traveling 424-feet over the left field wall. Tanaka was good but not great in his first MLB postseason game, working five innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs. He struck out three batters on 83 pitches. Dellin Betances, meanwhile, pitched decidedly poor as he was beat up by Houston in the seventh inning. Jose Altuve’s slap RBI single to left with two outs in the seventh brought in Jonathan Villar and put the Astros up, 3-0. The Astros will move on to face the Royals in the ALDS, which begins on Thursday.

The question facing the New York Rangers before they embark on their 2015-16 campaign isn’t whether this group can win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup since 199394. Rather, it’s how do the pieces fit into the lineup? Rangers decisionmakers debuted what is likely to be their opening-night roster during a recent practice session at their training facility in Greenburgh. Derick Brassard centered the top line with Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello. The second line consisted of Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and Kevin Hayes. Viktor Stalberg, Oscar Lindberg and J.T. Miller made up the third line, while the fourth line was Dominic Moore, Jarret Stoll and Jesper Fast. Emerson Etem was the spare forward. The defense pairings of Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi, Marc Staal-Dan Boyle and Keith Yandle-Kevin Klein remained intact, and Dylan McIlrath was the seventh. Henrik Lundqvist and Antti Raanta are the goaltenders. By and large the core of the roster is the same as the teams that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2014 and the Eastern Conference finals last spring. Essentially the determinations reached by organizational decision makers was (A) who would be the second line right wing; (B) could Lindberg earn a NHL job and (C) who was the seventh defenseman?

Derick Brassard and the Rangers begin their season Wednesday night in Chicago.
When he met with reporters before the final preseason game, coach Alain Vigneault announced he wanted to see Hayes on Stepan’s right side instead of Miller. Why? “I don’t want to get into specifics,” said Vigneault. Last season, Hayes recorded 17 goals and 45 points as a rookie third line center, while Miller finished with 10 goals and 23 assists. “I liked J.T.’s effort, I thought he battled hard. [There] weren’t a lot of quality scoring chances five-on-five. Is that a reflection of his play, his linemates play? Might be a combination of all of the above. It’s important to see what [Hayes] can do at that position.”
Although the triumvirate of Kreider-StepanHayes was held off the scoresheet, Miller scored a second-period goal in which he danced around Adam McQuaid before rifling a shot past Jonas Gustavsson. Still for as eye-popping as the goal was, Vigneault values consistency in his players. “There’s some moments where you see the skill set and you see the offensive potential,” Vigneault said of Miller. “There’s some other moments where on his own he’s got to learn to make the right play at the right time, high percentage play with the puck. [He’s a] young player that is going through the process and will continue to improve.” Whereas Vigneault views Miller as a work in progress, Lindberg won a roster spot by performing consistently. So much so that he was announced as the winner of the LarsErik Sjoberg Award as the best rookie in training camp before the game. The Blueshirts open their season Wednesday in Chicago against the defending champion Blackhawks (8 p.m., NBCSN).

We are looking for men and women ages 35 to 74 who have mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee to take part in a medical research study, and you’re invited to find out if you may qualify. The purpose of the study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for osteoarthritis of the knee. Each patient who qualifies will receive active investigational medication or an inactive placebo, study-related medical exams, MRI, X-ray, and laboratory tests at no cost. Compensation for travel may also be available.
If knee pain due to osteoarthritis is affecting your life, we invite you to learn more about the Illustrate-K Study. Talk to your doctor or visit IllustrateKStudy.com.
