Hillary Clinton has seen a dramatic drop in support among likely California primary voters since May as rival Bernie Sanders has surged, a Field Poll shows. California Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed into law a bill requiring the state to produce half its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, the most aggressive target in the country. The move was cheered by environmentalists even though language to cut petroleum use 50 percent over the next 15 years was stripped from the bill after objections from the oil industry and some lawmakers. Brown said the bill was part of the state’s efforts to “decarbonize” its economy to combat global climate change. REUTERS

Amazon’s cloud business, Amazon Web Services, launched a service Wednesday to help companies analyze their data, as well as a suitcase-like product that will let them ship large amounts of data for storage on the cloud. Cloud computing is the fastest-growing business for Amazon, which until recently was mostly known as an online marketplace, and the new services will help the company capitalize on rising demand to store and manage large amounts of information. The MBTA’s Commuter Rail unveiled plans to add a nonstop 7:55 a.m. train to the schedule starting in May 2016, which officials said would eliminate as many as 16 stops between Union Station and Back Bay and cut travel time about 30 minutes.

“The new schedule will give commuters more options on an improved schedule that reflect the needs of today for both our residents and our economy, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito said in a statement. The plan for the line, announced in Worcester on Wednesday, also includes five zone express trains, up from three. Just
one train leaving Worcester would make all stops between the city and Boston. In the evening, the Commuter Rail would run six trains between South and Union stations, five zone express and one nonstop, according to the plan. Three trains would take commuters to Framingham.

USS Constitution, last in fleet to sink enemy ship, turning 218 She’s the oldest in the fleet and the undefeated champion of the high seas. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

She is the only remaining ship in the U.S. Navy that has sent an enemy ship down to the briny deep. The USS Constitution, which will turn 218 years old on Oct. 21, regained the open-water combat title after the USS Simpson was decommissioned in 2015. The Simpson saw her moment of combat glory in 1988, when it drilled an Iranian gunboat with four missiles during the Persian Gulf War. That fight was the last U.S. Navy surface battle since WWII. The Constitution, a three-masted heavy frigate, was one of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and boasted 30 24-pound cannons, 22 32-pounders and four chase guns, two at the port and two to the bow. has grown ever since. We are very proud of that. Melkus was stationed on the Constitution from 2013 to 2014 and was more than grateful to shovel her decks during the winter months and stand on deck during the summer heat. “The ship really does speak to us, Melkus said. “It is on a Navy officer’s bucket list. They flock to Charlestown at some point to see her. Even
the non-history buffs walk away with a sense of awe. These days, the Constitution has 75 to 80 sailors onboard and is a special-assignment duty that requires an interview, a review of military service, a commanding officer’s signature and a special screening as well as a required written expression of interest from the applying sailor. “It’s tough to imagine
what it must have been like, Melkus said. “It’s an extensive history lesson, and you try as hard as you can to put yourself in the sailor’s shoes [some sailors didn’t even have shoes] during 1812. It’s not an easy life with 20-hour days, and four for sleep. It gives the crew a great appreciation for how easy we might have it compared to those sailors who endured the hardships.

Blatter faces 90-day suspension from FIFA, confidant says FIFA President Sepp Blatter faces an imminent 90-day suspension from soccer if the governing body’s ethics judge backs a prosecutor’s recommendation, a close friend and former adviser to Blatter told Reuters on Wednesday. Blatter’s long-term confidant, Klaus Stoehlker, said the decision by judge Hans-Joachim Eckert on the provisional suspension was expected by Friday. “There is no final decision. This is a recommendation from the lower part of the ethics committee to the upper part,” said Stoehlker, who added that Blatter had been informed of the development. “President Blatter will be in his office at FIFA tomorrow,” he said.

YEARS THAT BLATTER HAS WORKED FOR FIFA, STARTING AS A TECHNICAL DIRECTOR A FIFA spokesperson directed inquiries to Blatter’s U.S lawyers who did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesman for Eckert declined to comment.
The Investigatory Chamber of the Ethics Committee was not immediately available for comment. If Blatter is suspended, under FIFA’s statutes the most senior vice president, African soccer head Issa Hayatou, of Cameroon, would become the interim president. FIFA is already without its secretary general, Jerome Valcke, who was suspended last month after allegations he was involved in a scheme to sell 2014 World Cup tickets at a marked-up price. Valcke denied the charges. Blatter stated in June that he would stand down after an election to choose his replacement Feb. 26. The 79-year-old Swiss citizen has been president of FIFA since 1998. Seven years of research into the impact of head trauma in high school football players points to new dangers. “We are seeing changes in brain activity even without a diagnosed concussion, even without any sign or symptoms showing up, and that occurs in a large population of our subjects,” Larry Leverenz, a clinical professor of health and kinesiology at Purdue University. More than half the players participating in the trials showed signs of altered neurological function and dramatic changes to the wiring and biochemistry of their brains, according to a series of studies published by the Purdue Neurotrauma Group. The research focused on preconcussive head injuries, which up until now went largely ignored because of lack of symptoms usually

Carey Mulligan welcomes first Mumford son — or daughter
So that feud between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus? Yeah, totally not going away anytime soon. Minaj just did an interview with The New York Times Magazine that proves she’s far from over it. “The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” Minaj says. “You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Michael Shannon: Ignore Trump NED EHRBAR @Nedrick
ned.ehrbar@metro.us
“Freeheld features Michael Shannon alongside Julianne Moore and Ellen Page telling the true story of detective Laurel Hester (Moore), who fought to get her police pension awarded to her partner, Stacie Andree (Page) in New Jersey in 2005 after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Shannon, who plays her supportive police partner, has a personal connection to the story that made the fight for marriage equality a no-brainer. It’s interesting to think how this battle has evolved since 2005. It’s such a simple thing,
Shannon as Dane Wells in “Freeheld. PHIL CARUSO
such a simple plea for decency and human respect. Laurel devoted a huge portion of her life to protecting and taking care of her community, and she just wanted the same for herself. I don’t know — I don’t see how people can be unmoved. Has the recent Supreme Court decision changed your view on the story? Yeah, but there’s still a stigma. And there’s
still dissent. There’s still people that want to act like the Supreme Court was wrong. Like in my glorious home state of Kentucky. It never stops being topical, but there’s definitely a momentum. It seems like we’re real close to getting over it. Because it’s silly. It’s silly that so much pain and angst comes out of how people choose to love one another. I can understand being mad at somebody
Some would say it’s disregarding others’ experience. I mean, it’s bizarre because, honestly, there are people that are tremendously afflicted in straight relationships. The capacity or ability for people to suffer is probably even more prevalent in a neo-fundamentalist Christian 50-year marriage than it is in any other sort of human relationship. Do dissenters get more vocal as they ame out?
The number is getting smaller, the number of ‌ I want to say idiots. It’s shrinking. That’s American culture, creating the drama. It’s the same thing with Trump. The media is playing right into his hands. He says controversial things and then you pump it up, make it a story, and the next thing you know, the guy’s president. Just ignore him. Don’t give him a platform. It’s like putting a plant in a pot of soil. You should be yanking it out, throwing it on the sidewalk.
Bonus question How much does playing a real person aect your performance? It was huge to meet Dane — and yet the second I met Dane, I realized there was no way in the world I’d be able to be exactly like him. We’re completely dierent, physically. Dane also said in our meeting, “I’m not really concerned about you being exactly like me. The point is telling the world about Laurel and Stacie.â€? Dane’s a very humble man. He’s not looking for attention himself. But it was critical. I can’t imagine playing someone and not meeting them — if they’re still alive to meet.

It’s a feat for any band to stay together for a decade, and Mayday Parade has made it, with almost all its original members (Jason Lancaster left early on). We caught up with guitarist Alex Garcia to find out the secret of their longevity, talk about their new album “Black Lines” and why it’s cool to be emo.
Changing things up
Jojo GETTY IMAGES
Mayday Parade has kept a consistent level of success with their emopop rock songs, but Garcia says “Black Lines” is a departure from their last four, though not a “transitional album,” as it is sometimes being called in the press. “There are still a lot of old Mayday Parade elements in there, but we used a lot more guitar effects than on the previous albums and experimented with different noises and song structures too,” he tells us. For the band, it was a welcome step outside their comfort zone, and one they think fans will appreciate. Derek

Sanders’ voice is pushed to the limit, covering a bigger range than in the past. “Our single ‘Keep in Mind, Transmogrification Is a New Technology’ exemplifies that,” Garcia says. “It starts off kind of quiet and eventually builds into a huge outro where he’s at the top of his dynamic range and really pushing his voice to give it all that emotion.”
More breakup songs Emotion is something Mayday Parade has used from the start, particularly with their lyrics. Though the music may evolve, Garcia says their heartfelt lyrics are something they will never change. “If we had lyrics that were very sterilized or silly and not coming from the heart, our fans
wouldn’t be as connected to the music,” he says. “For this genre more than some other genres, having lyrics people can relate to is important.”
Not stopping anytime soon Since the band lives spread out across the U.S., getting together to record and tour is a reunion they all look
forward to. “No one actually thought at the time that we would get this far when we started the band,” Garcia says. “The band is a total democracy, where everyone’s opinion matters. There isn’t one person trying to be more important than the others, which could cause resentment. … We’re all in it for the long haul.”

Filming ‘Star Wars’ on Skellig Michael With a monastery dating back to the sixth century, this craggy island off the Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Ireland is soon to become famous for its role in the upcoming “Star Wars.” The sleepy fishing village of Portmagee would normally expect a lull in mid-September, with the end of the Irish school holidays leading to a fall off in visitors. But this year on Sept. 14, the quays were thronged with a film crew 100 strong, watched
by reporters, photographers and “Star Wars” fans gathering in hope of a glimpse of the original Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill. For the second year running, Skellig Michael, an island reached by the Portmagee ferry, was closed to visitors for the filming of “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” The popular franchise first visited Skellig Michael, a rocky uninhabited island off the County Kerry coast, in June 2014 to film a segment for “Episode VII” (which will be released in December). The island is famed for its dramatically situated monastery, which flourished from the sixth to the 12th centuries. Today the remains, atop a 750-foot peak reached by 600 steep stone steps, is a Unesco World Heritage Site, with limited access to the public

Best known for its elegant thoroughbred racing season, Saratoga boasts equally classy museums, a large and lively arts district and the oldest folk music venue in the country. Developed as a spa town for the well-heeled in the 1800s, Saratoga Springs retains its upscale aura. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery (www.skidmore.edu/tang), and the museum’s calendar is filled with special exhibitions. The Tang focuses on the connection between art and the world around us, looking at themes like biotechnology. Anniversary events include performances based on body resonance and a “sonic massage.” Guided tours give a deeper understanding of the artists and their messages. Thoroughly traditional are the works at the Hyde Collection Art Museum (www.hydecollection. org) in Glens Falls. Some 6,000 years of art history are housed in an elegant mansion on a spacious estate. You’ll find everything from
Rembrandts to Picassos among the 3,000 paintings, sculptures and decorative arts on display. Through January, the two special exhibits are “Heroines,” a collection of photo realism of women by Audrey Flack, and “Pulled, Pressed and Screened,” a look at American graphic arts and prints from the 1930s through today. Admission is free on the second Sunday of the month. Saratoga Arts (www.saratogaarts.org) stages exhibitions in its gallery as well as venues throughout town. The great unknowns The B’s enter the 2015-16 season as a team that could go in a variety of directions. RICH SLATE @RichSlate
sports@metro.us
Unlike recent years, the Bruins enter this season with a boatload of question marks. It comes with the territory coming off of 2014-15 when they missed the postseason for the first time in eight years. For every sure thing they possess, such as Tuukka Rask and Patrice Bergeron, they are juxtaposed with unknowns like newly acquired forwards Matt Beleskey and Jimmy Hayes — not to mention a slew of inexperienced defensemen. For these reasons and many others, it’s especially hard to predict how Boston will fare in 2015-16. A long summer should have rejuvenated their bodies after many long playoff runs, but they’ll need to get off to at least a decent start to ensure that head coach Claude Julien stays off the hot seat and behind their bench. Rask (34-21-13, .922 save percentage, 2.30 goals against average, 3 shutouts) fell short of his Vezina Trophy-winning season of the year before, but he was far from the biggest issue for the B’s in 2014-15. Boston had to play Rask in 70 games (the third-highest total for a goaltender in the NHL) and he was understandably worn down by the end of the season. It was a tough situation since t h e y

were chasing a playoff spot until the last game, so he basically never missed a start down the stretch. Jonas Gustavsson is Rask’s backup this season, and he at least brings some NHL experience (60-55-21 career record with .901 save percentage, 2.89 goals against average and six shutouts) with Toronto and Detroit. Defense will undoubtedly be a problem for the Bruins, at least until Zdeno Chara is back to full health, and who knows if Dennis Seidenberg will ever regain his previous form? Tr a d -
ing Dougie Hamilton to Calgary seemed dumb at the time, and it looks even worse now when youngsters like Kevan Miller, Joe Morrow and Zach Trotman will be counted on to log significant minutes right off the bat. Torey Krug (12 goals, 27 assists, plus-13) is out to prove he’s more than an offensive defenseman, and former UMass-Amherst star Matt Irwin (8 goals, 11 assists) will have a bigger role than he did in San Jose. Colin Miller was the prize for Boston in the Milan Lucic trade and they’ll need him to be good right away. “Everybody’s just trying to focus on heading into the season, having a really good start and we all know how important that is,” noted Morrow. Goal-scoring limitations have plagued the Bruins for years, but at least on paper they seem to have more potential there t h a n

Ugly odds There are 18 NHL teams with better odds of winning the Stanley Cup this season as the B’s are 40/1 odds to hoist the prize. A look at the teams most likely to win it all (via OnlineGambling.lv) • Blackhawks 7/1 • Lightning 8/1 • Kings 10/1 • Rangers 10/1 • Ducks 12/1 • Penguins 12/1 • Blues 15/1 • Wild 15/1 • Capitals 15/1 • Canadiens 15/1 • Predators 18/1 • Islanders 18/1 • Blue Jackets 22/1 • Red Wings 26/1 • Stars 26/1 • Flames 30/1
they’ve possessed recently. A fully healthy David Krejci always makes a huge difference, and David Pastrnak should be stronger in his first full NHL season. Boston might still lack a 30goal scorer, but guys like Bergeron, Krejci, Beleskey, Brad Marchand and Loui Eriksson should all post 20-plus goals this year if they play up to their capabilities.
