A U.S. appeals court ruled against a celebrity yogi on Thursday, finding that he is not entitled to copyright protection for a sequence of 26 yoga poses and two breathing exercises that he developed. Bikram Choudhury published a book in 1979 with descriptions, photographs and drawings of the yoga sequence, which is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Physician-assisted suicide bill A Stoughton rep is pushing a deathwith-dignity bill similar to Oregon and California’s. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS
nate.homan@metro.us
Despite a setback at the ballot box in 2012 and several failed attempts to reach a legislative majority, the death-with-dignity bill is headed back to Beacon Hill. “It’s a very intense, personal decision,” said Rep. Louis Kafka, author of the Compassionate Care for the Terminally Ill bill. “It’s a very emotional issue. In my opinion, the fact that the ballot question was so close leads me to believe that there’s a lot of gray area. It’s not a decision that other people take lightly.” Kafka, a Democrat from Stoughton, said he is pushing for a patient’s

right to choose a more dignified end after a constituent facing — certain death after an extended period of pain — implored him to legalize the chance elect his demise on his own terms. “I know people will have ethical and religious and moral issues, but it is the patient’s decision,” Kafka said. “This bill is modeled after the Oregon law. California just passed a similar one too. It hasn’t caused any great condemnation in the state of Oregon. Not
that many people have taken advantage of it. It’s a personal decision, and it’s a tough decision. If you want to do it, nothing pushes you to take the medication unless you’re ready.” Oregon passed its Death With Dignity Act in 1997, which allows terminally ill Oregonians to end their lives through a voluntary self-administration of lethal medications prescribed specifically for that purpose. But when addressing such a contentious issue,
there are strong voices for and against it. Many in the medical community have said that physician-assisted suicide is in direct opposition to the Hippocratic Oath. The anti-death-with-dignity advocates agree with that stance. “Even in Oregon, the main reason people elect to go through the physician-assisted suicide process is because they’re afraid of being a burden on their families,” Rita Marker, attorney and Executive director of the Patients Rights Council said. “Imagine a child seeing a loved one decide that they didn’t want to be a burden anymore. What message are they sending that child?” Marker said the reason people elect to take the medical suicide route is less about personal pain management and more about taking the pain off of those who would provide care. “Many times a doctor

will say, ‘There’s nothing more I can do,’” Marker said. “That’s the time to get a new doctor. We’re talking dire situations. People in excruciating pain are taken into account, but people do not want to be a burden on their families. We’re not talking about just the person who ends up dead, but the message to those around them about being
a burden.” Kafka said the bill he has written provides a patient with the opportunity to choose a cocktail of lifeending pills once a doctor has determined that he or she has six months to live. Patients must be sound of mind and undergo psychological analysis to prove that depression and mental illness are not a factor in their decision. If patient choose to end their own lives, they must have two witnesses present for the decision, one of which cannot be a relative. But Marker is not sold on this. “Once it’s filled, there are no protections for the patient,” Marker said. “We don’t know if family members or anyone else forced or tricked them into taking the medication. We have better protection for people on death row than facing euthanasia. They call it death with dignity, but elsewhere we call it an execution.”

Government Center station murals for sale The artwork greeted commuters at the subway hub for decades. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
For years, they greeted commuters on the wall at the highly-trafficked Government Center. Soon, you can take them home. More than a dozen pieces of MBTA history are set to go up for auction starting next week, all of them paintings by artist Mary Beams, formerly of Boston. The 19 paintings will be sold by Skinner Auctioneers in 17 lots via online auction beginning Oct. 20. The murals, which depict images of passengers
and other snapshots of city life in train windows, were removed from the station when a renovation project began in 2014. They couldn’t be installed at the new station because they are made of plywood and don’t meet current fire code, an MBTA spokesman said. When the T contacted Beams about the paintings, the agency offered her the chance to take them back to her home in Minnesota. But that didn’t feel right, Beams told Metro. “They feel like children to me. They have a life of their own and they’ve grown up in Boston and they should stay there,” Beams said. “Especially since I haven’t encountered them in so long.” The T commissioned

the paintings in the 1970s, and Beams said she left Boston shortly after finishing the project. “I haven’t seen them since,” she said. But many Bostonians and visitors have, as untold thousands passed through the station in the heart of downtown. In that time they made an impression on Bryan Beaucher, co-owner of Ward Maps, which operates MBTAgifts, a retailer for retired T memorabilia that has helped the agency sell signs and other goods since 2011. “I spent a lot of time in the city growing up and I just loved seeing all the historical elements that are in those paintings,” Beaucher told Metro. He said he expected
a lot of interest in the art, which is handmade on plywood — most of the modern art pieces on today’s T platform, if they aren’t sculptures, are printed on porcelain, he said. By the auction’s end, he said he would be surprised if many of Beams’ pieces didn’t sell for $3,000 or more. “They’re all one-of-a-

Don’t wait to protect yourself from the market’s inevitable corrections. Right now, add physical precious metals to your portfolio, and get the feeling of security that comes with owning a hard asset that you can actually hold in your hands. It’s very easy to do. All it takes is a few minutes on the phone with the experts at American Bullion to convert a portion of your IRA or old 401(k) into a Gold IRA. American Bullion is a listed dealer of the United States Mint, has an A+ BBB rating and is one of the most trusted Gold IRA companies in the country. “We are not a hard-sell operation,” says American Bullion’s Jon Nelson. “Our goal is to provide accurate information and help our clients make the decision that’s best for them about how physical precious metals fit into their investment strategy.” The first step is to call 800-897-9664 and request your complimentary copy of American Bullion’s newly updated Gold Guide,
which is packed with information and written in an easy-to-understand style. “We have a quick, safe and simple in-house system that’s hassle-free and 100 percent tax-free to help people roll over or transfer a portion of their retirement accounts into precious metals,” explains Nelson. “The best part is that we handle everything from A to Z. The entire process, including all the paperwork, can be done in about 10 minutes on the phone.” Nelson also notes that investors should not be surprised or discouraged from pursuing this idea if their financial advisor tries to steer them away from owning physical gold or has never recommended it. “The reason is simple … advisors typically don’t earn ongoing commissions and fees when you invest in physical precious metals,” he says. Owning physical gold helps preserve longterm wealth, regardless of the ups and downs of the stock market, and gives you a kind of “financial insurance.” “Our clients often mention how safe they feel now and how easy it was to become an owner of gold,” adds Nelson. “It all starts with a simple phone call.” For answers to all your questions and to request the newly updated American Bullion Gold Guide, call 800-897-9664

kind and they’re actually done by an artist,” he said. “That’s pretty special.” They’re also “quintessentially Boston,” said Skinner specialist Michael Moser, emblematic of a style of realism that took off in the city in that era. Want to see the colorful panels one last time?
They will be on display at the city’s transportation building at 10 Park Plaza from Oct. 20-29 in its second-floor atrium. That’s an unusual move for an auctioneer that typically shows its collections in-house, Moser said, but he said it’s a fitting tribute for the public works. A T spokesman said
proceeds from the sales would go toward a porcelain enamel panel in the new Government Center station featuring copies of Beams’ images, with the remainder supporting more public art in T stations. The artist, Beams, planned to visit Boston for a preview event Oct. 21.

Operators of the Commuter Rail apologized to passengers Thursday for a Wednesday night issue that saw many commuters stuck inside a train for more than an hour. The breakdown happened just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Salem, a rail spokesman told Metro. Passengers stayed there until about 7:20 p.m., he said, adding that an apparent brake issue made it difficult to move the disabled train. “We want to apologize to our passengers for the inconvenience last night,” said Mac Daniel, spokes-

Daniel said. Residual delays lasted until 8 and 9 p.m. Many peeved passengers took to Twitter to complain Wednesday night. Daniel said rail operators could not allow passengers to exit impacted trains because they were not stopped at or near station platforms. “Safety becomes a big issue and it’s safer to keep the passengers on the train as opposed to letting them de-board,” Daniel said. In past extreme cases, the T had allowed commuters to exit disabled trains. Last winter, Red Line commuters stranded for more than two hours ended up trudging through the snow to shuttle buses after their train broke down between Quincy Center and Quincy Adams stops.
Pot bust: Police charge California man with trafficking weed at Logan Authorities busted a California man accused of bringing 100 pounds of marijuana through Logan Airport on Wednesday evening. State troopers and DEA agents were tipped off by Randolph police that a man flying into Boston from San Francisco was headed east with a large amount of pot. The task force waited in the terminal for the suspect, Trang Pham, 31, from San Jose, California. After getting two warrants out of East Boston court, Trooper Eric Pecjo and his Belgian Malinois drug dog Zeva searched Pham’s suitcases and found 100 pounds of marijuana packaged in heat-sealed plastic wrap. Pham was arrested and charged with marijuana trafficking. He was expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on Thursday. METRO

I continue to do it, only because when we’re traveling, we always find ourselves in a hotel somewhere, eating a club sandwich, getting to see lands that a lot of our family and friends don’t get to see, getting to meet wonderful people all over the globe. There’s a lot of people I know whose parents took a lot of pictures when they were kids. I never had that many of me taken as a kid. I’ve heard some people say they can’t remember their childhood because of this.
At the same time, it does get pretty dark, which is especially notable now, when children’s films tend to be sanitized. Joe had said that before we started filming, he had a 2 ½-year-old son who was having night terrors. He didn’t know how to remedy it. He said that he would like to make this film as dark as it can be to show kids that, no matter how frightening your fears, you overcome them.

Garrett Hedlund doesn’t tend to do silly. He does brooding (“Tron: Legacy”) or laconic (“On the Road”). With “Pan,” he kicks things up a gear. The bigbudget production is a Peter Pan origin story, and Hedlund plays the younger Captain Hook, here more of a cowboy — both hands still intact — but a good guy who befriends Levi Miller’s Pan upon his first hectic trip to Neverland.

MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Like “Still Alice,” “Freeheld” makes us watch Julianne Moore at her rarely more personable fade away slowly and tragically. The difference is “Freeheld,” unlike “Still Alice,” is crude — an activist film where the activism takes precedence over artistry, and where fine actors are there more to finesse their way over copious rough patches. Moore is too good for “Freeheld,” but she doesn’t hold back. She’s electric as Laurel Hester,
a tough New Jersey detective who enters into domestic partner bliss with the more butch Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). Upon finding she has late-stage cancer, she also learns that, thanks to a loophole, Stacie won’t receive her pension. So begins a battle for her rights against the board of five (white, male, mostly old) county freeholders, who stay stone-faced in front of protesters led by Steve Carell’s LGBT rights rabble-rouser, who’s so broadly portrayed he’s
introduced yarmulke-first. There are intimations of a more interesting film. They’re uncomfortable with being turned into mere martyrs, and here would be a good spot for “Freeheld” to explore the very real issues of effecting change. It doesn’t take it, proceeding instead to either flatter or alienate its audience, depending on which side they’re on. Still, it has another Julianne Moore performance you have to see, no matter the consequences.

••••• This isn’t the story you’ve heard,” crows the narrator in the opening minutes of “Pan.” Oh, but we’ve heard that line before. At this point a straight-up “Peter Pan” adaptation — like “Peter Pan,” from 2003 — would be more daring than yet another origin story, which, alas, is what this tricked-out, lavish fantasia is. Besides, you have kind of heard this story before, even if it’s a patchwork of other, mostly non-J.M. Barrie entities. Here, our pre-forever young Peter (Levi Miller) is both a brooding
sad sack out of a DC comic book movie and that hoariest of adventure cliches: the “chosen one.” The familiarity doesn’t end there. When Peter is literally air-lifted from a Dickensian orphanage to far-off Neverland, he’s greeted by an anachronistic sing-a-long, just like in “Moulin Rouge.” In fact it’s so just like “Moulin Rouge” the song is “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which was already on the “Rouge” playlist. Still, imitation — even blatant ripping-off — isn’t in and of itself evil. At its best, “Pan” is a sumptuous, nutty extravaganza with constant distractions. As films by Joe Wright go, it’s more the insane “Hanna” than his “Pride & Prejudice.” There are pirates (one of them dressed like Sly Stone) on bungee cords and
a dogfight between RAF planes and a flying pirate ship. Later comes surely the CGI trade’s oddest job since the elfin Aerosmith of “The Polar Express”: the sight of multiple mermaid Cara Delevingnes. “Pan” jams so much into its not-too-swollen confines that even finding feeling that doesn’t feel Hallmark proves tricky. Its one major stand-out, and it might be the movie’s weirdest flourish, is Garrett Hedlund. He plays the younger, nicer, more helpful not-yet-Captain Hook with what appears to be a wacky John Huston impersonation — all exaggerated mouth movements and sing-songy vowels. It’s not clear why Neverland needs a John Huston impression, but it gives “Pan” a needed shot in the arm of actual joy.

It’s a tale told midstride, namely about teen Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who in 2012, at 15, was the subject of an attempted assassination. After speaking out against Taliban rule, she was shot while on a school bus; a bullet left the left side of her face partially paralyzed. She survived, recovered and relocated with her family to England, where she proceeded to become even more outspoken, this time as an almost-martyr. That’s it for her story, and stirring as it is, a film about her is premature. But “He Named Me Malala” is not purely her story. It’s not an expository Wikipedia movie. It’s also not a fly-on-the-wall doc that simply hangs with Malala and her family, including her dad, Ziauddin, who helped foment her political awakening.
Young human rights activist Malala Yousafzai is profiled in Davis Guggenheim’s “He Named Me Malala.” FOX SEARCHLIGHT
Nor is it an activist film, meant to whip up a frenzy over an important issue. It’s none of these things and yet all of them, borrowing bits from each and mixing and matching them into a doc with a severe crisis of identity — a film looking for a reason to exist as a feature-length documentary and not a “60 Minutes” segment. It tries everything and still winds up feeling small and slight. Director Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) is smart enough to avoid simple, reductionist this-
happened-then-that-happened documentary filmmaking, but some of his docs can also feel disorganized, structureless, borderline ADD. “Malala” is closer to “It Might Get Loud,” his exploration of guitarists Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White, which got so lost in not being simplistic that it felt diffuse and oblivious to what might be its reason for existing (in this case: watching Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White jam). “Malala” has the same problem. It tries to reinvent the wheel, and leaves a mess. MP

Community living is hard, man Season 6 finds Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew still trying to make life work in

This year, he’s still trying to assert authority and preach survival skills, and he’ll inevitably be butting heads with former U.S. Congresswoman Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh),

The biggest complaint about the past season is that the walkers have been sidelined in favor of more human threats — but six seasons in, that’s to be expected, as the ever-present threat of lethal biting just becomes a part of life. This season will see an increase in menacing zombie hordes. And that increase kicks off the season premiere, with Rick leading a crazy plan to deal with a quarry full of walkers — allegedly more in one episode than the series has ever featured.
Wolves at the door
Which isn’t to say there aren’t still non-undead threats out there to contend with. The latest, teased at the end of last season, are the Wolves, a few of whom infamously tried to take out Morgan (Lennie James), which was just a terrible idea. The Wolves will be out in fuller force this year, and they’ve got their sights fixed on Alexandria.
Don’t get too attached “The Walking Dead” is always careful about doling out deaths for major characters, but with an ensemble of this size, no one is ever really safe — even the more high-profile characters like Rick, Daryl or Carol. A 90-minute premiere leaves a lot of room for casualties, so be prepared to say goodbye to someone Sunday night.

No sleepers? No problem for last week’s winner Brettrau24 didn’t search for sleepers. He built his lineup on players with great matchups and solid statistical profiles. One surprise is that there are three “repeat” players from last week’s winning lineup. Normally, chasing past performance is a sure way to donate your entry fee to the winner, but whether you call Devonta Freeman a fluke or a breakout, his performance has been a part of two big winners as while as helping the Falcons.
QB: Rivers Philip Rivers seems to be overlooked and underowned on a weekly basis. Although he was without three starting offensive lineman, the signal-caller contributed an eye-popping 358 passing yards and three touchdowns. PHILLIP RIVERS ($7,400), 3.5% OWNED, 26.22 FDPS
RB: Freeman, Williams Chasing last week’s stats is usually not recommended, but you must learn how to separate the one-week wonders from the breakout performers. DEVONTA FREEMAN, ($7,200), 12.5 % OWNED, 35.4 FDPS; KARLOS WILLIAMS, ($6,300), 42.1% OWNED, 14.5 FDPS
WR: Hopkins, Allen, Thomas With only one TD between his three wide receivers, Brettrau 24’s pass-catching core was anchored by Hopkins’ 157 receiving yards. DEANDRE HOPKINS, ($7,900), 12.2% OWNED, 20.1 FDPS; KEENAN ALLEN, ($7,700), 10.4% OWNED, 15.2 FDPS; DEMARYIUS THOMAS, (8,500), 9% OWNED, 13.8 FDPS
TE: Bennett The Raiders have been shredded all year by tight ends, but that logic only held strong if a quarterback could get him the ball — which Jay Cutler did Sunday. MARTELLUS BENNETT, ($5,500), 14.5% OWNED, 19.8 FDPS GRAHAM GANO, (K), ($4,700), 3.3% OWNED, 13 FDPS; PANTHERS (D), ($4,800), 9.1% OWNED, 18 FDPS

IT’S TIME TO DROOL OVER OCTOBER ARMS There’s nothing better than postseason baseball. Well, actually, maybe just one thing. That would be the Boston Red Sox taking part in it. For the secondstraight year, the Sox finished in last place in the AL East. So watching the playoffs once again without a horse in the race comes with mixed emotions. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be paying attention. Not only will I be watching, I’ll be all in, fully invested. Because I love a good pitcher’s duel. And in the postseason, every single pitch is magnified. In this specific postseason, the pitching is lights-out across the board. Dominant starting pitching is mandatory in this league to win a championship. You can’t win a World Series without it. And in this year’s postseason, all eight teams in the tournament have at least two dominant starters at the top of their rotation. You could make the argument that the New York Mets have three. Or that the St. Louis Cardinals only have one, thanks to some injuries. But either way, the blueprint is clear: You’ve got to have pitching. That explains why the Red Sox are watching from afar. There are at least 16 starters currently playing meaningful baseball in October who I’d take over any pitcher on the Sox roster. Do I really need to name them? David Price, Marcus Stroman, Cole Hamels, Yovani Gallardo, Yordano Ventura, Johnny Cueto, Dallas Keuchel, Scott Kazmir, Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, John Lackey, Michael Wacha, Jake Arrieta, and Jon Lester. Notice I left out Matt Harvey, who is an ace, but also seems to be quite the distraction these days for a Mets team that has a chance to make some noise in the postseason. Also
PATS PREVIEW What to watch for in Sunday’s game against Dallas This week, it’s Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys that stand in the way of a 4-0 start to the season. But they do so without quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant. Here are three things to watch for on Sunday (4:25 p.m., CBS): Greg Hardy returns If Roger Goodell had his way, Tom Brady wouldn’t be suiting up on Sunday. But you know who returns to the field? Greg Hardy, woman-beater. According to a 2014 testimony from the ex-girlfriend he beat, Hardy threw her around his place, including into a bath tub and then on top of a bed covered in loaded, semi-automatic rifles. He then dragged her by the hair and choked her until she accepted that she was going to die. She didn’t die — and after Hardy was found guilty by a judge, he appealed and the sides settled in a Superior Court. But that doesn’t mean Hardy is innocent. And this week, he was completely unapologetic, even saying that this was “the most awesome period in his life.” He then had the audacity to mention Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen, and her sister in the interview.

notice that two former dominant Red Sox starters — Lester and Lackey — are included in this list. While doing my best to not live in the past, that’s a pretty formidable group of pitchers. And I could add more
to it, who are pitching in the playoffs and are better than what the Red Sox had to offer in 2015, but again, I’m trying to move forward, and think about 2016. In order for Dave Dombrowski to do that, he needs to acknowledge the difference in pitching talent in this year’s postseason and the Red Sox team he inherited when he became president of baseball operations in Boston a few months ago. In fact, a couple guys on that list will be available this winter. And if the Red Sox are serious about contending next season, and once again playing meaningful baseball in October, then their first order of business this offseason must be to acquire someone like, let’s say, Price. Price was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline, and is an impending free agent. Signing him would be a great
start. And judging by the aforementioned blueprint as I watch this year’s postseason, it should only be the start. Dombrowski can’t stop at just one dominant arm. He then needs to add another top-flight starter. Someone who has proven to be a top-ofthe-rotation arm in the majors. The ideal way to acquire that second starter would be to overwhelm a smaller-market club with a package of prospects to complete a blockbuster trade. Dombrowski has a history of doing both — signing free agents and making big trades — and we know the Red Sox aren’t shy when it comes to their checking account, so this isn’t a crazy offseason strategy by any means. Especially if they’re serious about getting back to the postseason. Judging by the teams playing this October, it’s pretty obvious what the Red Sox have to do.
Running out of options Brandon Weeden is not going to beat the Patriots on Sunday. If the Cowboys have any chance at winning this game, they’re going to do it on the ground. In fact, according to Bill Belichick, the Cowboys have the best offensive line in the game. That means not only protection for Weeden, but holes for running backs Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden. The Patriots allow an NFL-worst 4.9 yards per carry. Welcome to Big D Belichick, Brady and the Patriots make their first trip to AT&T Stadium in Dallas. “It’s just a familiarity of the 40-second clock, the scoreboard, the location of where things are on the field, like the communication system [we need to know],” said Belichick. We have the entire offseason to spit educated conjecture about NFL teams. But the bottom line is we don’t really know which defenses are going to bleed yards against the pass and which offenses will try to play at a breakneck pace. Now that we’re a full month into the season, we have actual real-game data to draw conclusions from.

The abyss beyond Vontae Vontae Davis is among the best cover corners in the league. He’s right
there with Richard Sherman, Josh Norman, Aqib Talib, Desmond Trufant, etc., in the tier right below Darrelle Revis. But he doesn’t go into the slot, and the Colts are in brutal shape behind him at the position. It means opponents simply avoid Davis and attack at other spots with volume. No. 2 slot receivers that have already lit up the Colts include Percy Harvin, Eric Decker, Kendall Wright and Allen Hurns.
