A keynote speaker for the Annual Conference of Mayors, De Blasio will speak on “Anti-Semitism in the West: How Cities Must Lead.” Arriving in Israel on October 16th, his office noted that the trip “is no cost to taxpayers.” Israeli entrepreneur Baruch Eliezer Gross has instead covered the travel and hotel costs for the

Men’s Bar, the first kiosk to open in the Fulton Center subway station in downtown Manhattan, is now hoping to entice commuters with giant boxing gloves and a speed bag before it likely packs up at the end of the month. “This area in particular is a little on the cumbersome side, people are bolting to get to work in the morning,” Men’s Bar events manager Stephanie LaCapra told Metro. “In the afternoon, people will ask if there’s a coffee shop or if Shake Shack is open.” LaCapra said the popup store is only scheduled to be in Fulton Center through Oct. 21, and the company quit setting up products for sale on Saturday and Sundays. LaCapra said about half the customers are women who think the beauty counter is actually a bar, or are asking about products for their husband. This week, LaCapra set up a speed bag and has been encouraging
commuters to take a few punches in hopes of raising awareness on men’s grooming after they work out. The counter is the only retail shop open in Fulton Center, which opened last November. Shake Shack signage is up, but the company isn’t planning to open up until next year. Fulton Center debuted in November 2014. The $1.4 billion project, initially set to open in 2007, connects the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, Z and R lines, and will eventually connect to the World Trade Center and PATH train. Officials at the November 2014 opening said retailers were expected to set up shop in 2015. The Westfield Group is managing the retail space and leasing. “Westfield is in advanced stages of leasing activity, subtenant design and fit out work, expecting the first openings during the fall,” MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said. “Westfield is not yet paying rent to the MTA, but is covering the substantial operating expenses that would otherwise fall to us. Thus, we’re confident Westfield is working to open the retail as soon as possible, which will benefit everyone.” Requests for comment from Westfield were not immediately returned on Thursday.

Gas leak unlikely in Brooklyn explosion Fire investigators are looking into whether fuel or accelerant was behind the explosion in Borough Park on Saturday despite previous statements that natural gas may have been involved. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said Thursday that “there was no natural gas flowing to the second-floor apartment since June 26” and that “no significant natural gas flow into any part of the building had occurred” before the explosion. Over the weekend,

officials assumed the blast was set off by a gas leak after learning that a tenant on the second floor appeared to have moved a kitchen stove out of the apartment and may have left the gas connection open. The new information that no gas was flowing into the building for more weeks has led investigators to question if an accelerant of some kind might have been used. On Monday, authorities said they recovered the remains of a second person from the rubble of the blown out building. Officials have declined to confirm whether the remains were of Francisca Figueroa, whose family said has not been heard of since the day of the explosion. Ligia Puello, 64, died after the explosion and was found in the building’s stairwell. She lived on the third floor. CHESTER SORIA

Led by advocates, data and policy experts, along with a Young Women’s Advisory Council, the initiative is set to produce a blueprint to determine what is working and not working for programming and policy changes. Bridging gaps, it would focus on drawing young women to help create changes in health, education and anti-violence services.
“While we know that women are underserved and underrepresented, we know shockingly little about how to change them. We need to have young women in the room as we ask these questions because it’s their lives, their experiences and their future that we need to secure,” Mark-Viverito said. Mark-Viverito said her office would be doing the research and making recommendations over the next six months. BRIEF Clinton proposal calls for breakup of ‘too-big-to-fail’ banks Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton on Thursday introduced a plan to curb what she called Wall Street abuses, including a “risk fee” on the largest financial institutions and breaking up banks considered “too big to fail.” Under the proposal, Clinton would charge a yearly “risk fee” on a sliding scale on the liabilities of banks with more than $50 billion in assets along with other institutions overseen by financial regulators, her campaign said. The proposals also called for
raising the fines that regulators could impose on corporations and their executives, and imposing a new tax on high-frequency trading (HFT). “These sound like much more meaningful reforms than some of the things she has suggested earlier,” said former Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chair Sheila Bair, currently president of Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland. Clinton’s HFT tax would target securities transactions with excessive levels of order cancellations, which her campaign said unnecessarily burdens markets and enables unfair and abusive trading strategies. Garrett Hedlund doesn’t tend to do silly. He does brooding (“Tron: Legacy”) or laconic (“On the Road,” “Inside Llewyn Davis”). With “Pan,” he kicks things up a gear. The bigbudget production is a Peter Pan origin story, and Hedlund plays the younger Captain Hook, here more of a cowboy — and still sporting both hands — but a good guy who befriends Levi Miller’s Pan upon his first, hectic trip to Neverland.
James Hook is a bit of a departure for you. He’s a lot goofier than your previous roles. I’ve never played a character who’s so big and projective. I’ve done films that are quite stressful. Usually we’re on sets, and everyone’s stressed-out, and you’re playing the darker character. You have an abusive father or you’ve lost family members or someone’s about to die. You can’t eat or sleep. Joe [Wright, director] and I wanted the material to have a darker side, but we still managed to have a lot of fun with it. He and I were laughing so hard, saying, “Wouldn’t this be great to film a whole movie where we’re having a ball and relaxing and not stressing and feeling like a kid again?” At the same time, it does get pretty dark, which is especially notable now, when children’s films tend to be sanitized. Joe had said that before we started filming, he had
a 2 ½-year-old son who was having night terrors. He didn’t know how to remedy it. He said that he would like to make this film as dark as it can be to show kids that, no matter how frightening your fears, you overcome them. So this is a film that’s really coming from a filmmaker’s kid. Were there other things in “Pan” that Wright’s son wound up inspiring? Tiger Lily’s outfit was really inspired by his son, and the fight scene on the trampoline was inspired by his son, because his son loved this trampoline. It’s wonderful to be part of a film where so many aspects were inspired by this young boy. Levi [Miller] was 11 while doing this, and it was just awesome to see a kid who has never been on a film set before getting to do things that anyone could dream of. It really reminded you to loosen up a bit, that life’s short — let’s have fun.
The sensitive side of Garrett Hedlund You’ve talked in the past of writing a lot — including poetry — while on set. Do you still do that? I continue to do it, only because when we’re traveling, we always find ourselves in a hotel somewhere, eating a club sandwich, getting to see lands that a lot of our family and friends don’t get to see, getting to meet wonderful people all over the globe. I really just write so I don’t forget.
When I write, sometimes I’ll think it’s just s—. A year or two later, I’ll read them and think, “Why did I stress so much?” That completely takes you back to that moment. There’s a lot of people I know whose parents took a lot of pictures when they were kids. I never had that many of me taken as a kid. I’ve heard some people say they can’t remember their childhood because of this.
Peter Pan speaks — talking to star Levi Miller Levi Miller learned a lot on his first big movie, which was no less than a $150 million extravaganza. But “Pan”’s not just about the untold dollars being burned. The young Australian actor describes his Peter Pan, who’s plucked from an orphanage during the London Blitz and transported to Neverland, as a bit selfish, with a single-minded quest to find his missing mother (Amanda Seyfried), sometimes while ignoring the safety of others. “He does a lot of things for himself — which I guess is all right because he’s doing it to find his mother. That’s an all-right excuse. But it’s for himself,” Miller says. Still, that’s what intrigued him. “He’s got a lot of depth to him, which I was happy to play around with. He’s not just a blank character who’s got one personality.” As for the benefits of starring in a big movie — other than talking to strangers— Miller says there are lots. But he does single one out: “Being kissed by Cara Delevingne was definitely a perk.”
Hugh Jackman’s head on fire Hugh Jackman didn’t need arm-twisting to sign up as the dastardly Blackbeard, who’s out for Peter Pan’s hide. “I always wanted to play a role like this in this world — swashbuckling, sword fighting, pirates,” he says. He even did some deep-dive research on the real Blackbeard. “He used to stick incense sticks into his beard and glue them on, then light them before going into battle. It would look like his head was on fire.” The role also gave him a chance to really go all out. On his over-the-top performance, Jackman says, “It brought out the ham in me, which is not far from the surface.” His children definitely approve. “My kids, who are 15 and 10, are brutally honest. They said, ‘Oh, we actually like this one, Dad.’”

The death this week of Chantal Akerman looms over the filmmaker’s apparent last film, which would have been a moving portrayal of mortality even without her passing. Told in a series of long takes that out-minimalist even her legendary 1975 epic “Jeanne Dielman,” it records seemingly inconsequential moments with her late mom: chit-chatting over the lunch table or Skype, her sitting in a chair reading a magazine, her in another room. It’s confrontational cinema, especially for the impatient, but the shots make the mundane riveting, turning the inessential into the essential.
Todd Haynes’ lesbian drama, in which Rooney Mara’s 1950s shopgirl is pursued by a wealthy dame (Cate Blanchett), isn’t a straight-up political film like the didactic and artless “Freeheld.” It’s in fact artful — an impossibly lush romance in a minor key that’s more interested in exploring how one conducts the business of love when one can’t even say its name. Blanchett and Mara carefully negotiate the terms of a relationship that’s prevented by both sexual mores and class, putting us in the head space of people forced to think practically about the least practical of emotions.
‘The Assassin’
Sorry, martial arts nerds, but the latest, acclaimed wuxia ass-kicker is really for art film nerds — 95 percent a glacial block of pure minimalism, with the other 5 percent depicting impalements and beatings, unleashed by star Shu Qi, that happen quicker than an eye-blink. Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-hsien’s first feature in seven years dwells, lovingly, on the bits that most martial arts entries ignore: the sitting around, the nervous waiting before attacks, the authentic recreations of Tang Dynasty bathing methods. That’s to say it’s catnip for those who like their art both high and low.
‘Miles Ahead’
We haven’t seen Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic, but it’s the Closing Night film and NYFF is too snooty to go for hubristic actor’s biopics. And it sounds like it’s nothing like Ed Harris’ “Pollock” or Kevin Spacey’s “Beyond the Sea.” There’s even allegedly a car chase, in addition to Cheadle doing his best impersonation of the jazz god, both in his prime and in his shaggy-haired drug days.
‘The Treasure’
Corneliu Porumboiu’s “The Treasure” is a buried treasure movie, but it’s also a Romanian New Wave movie. Films of its ilk — “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu,” “Four Months, Three Weeks, Two Days,” Porumboiu’s own “Police, Adjective” — err toward the grim and hopeless, capturing a society tied up in Kafkaesque bureaucracy and endless knots of red tape. As such, this simple adventure gets hilariously dragged down to a particularly miserable place on earth. And yet, watch enough Romanian cinema and you think you know the grim place this is going to end. But you’re wrong — hysterically, memorably wrong.

The Aaron Sorkin-built “Steve Jobs only has three “scenes, but there’s a mountain of sheer stuff crammed into them. Each section, charting the real time build-up to three of the tech god’s key product launches, is endlessly wordy, endlessly busy, with roughly 10,000 moving parts — not the least being characters scamper-
ing between rooms and not-yet-filled auditoriums as they breathlessly volley Sorkinese. The segments are so dense, so teeming with quips and heady thoughts, that it’s almost a shame to try to suss out simple big ideas. That would simply seem reductive — an attempt to tame a film that’s at its best when it’s just moving. Reducing things to simple big ideas is exactly what happens in “Steve Jobs — eventually. It’s two great, breakneck epi-
sodes followed by a third that fumbles when it tries to tie it all together, and especially when it tries to make us feel for Michael Fassbender’s perpetually wigged-out Jobs. But it mostly avoids being the film it shouldn’t be. It’s not a simplistic missive on “What Steve Jobs Means or “Who Steve Jobs Was or “How We Live Now. It has plenty to say about all three, but it buries them in tuneout-and-miss nuggets dropped into dialogue or made subliminally.
In the final third, the confrontations that have seemed brief — mostly with Seth Rogen’s Steve Wozniak and Katherine Waterston’s Chrisann Brennan — get supersized, even maudlin. The pissy Sorkin talk makes way for the vomit-worthy. The nadir isn’t, somehow, Wozniak ending a righteous tirade by crowing that life “is not binary. You can be decent and gifted at the same time. It’s Jobs, in the moments, actually saying, “I’m poorly made. (Just like a gizmo!) These are mis-steps, though, in a film that otherwise trusts that we’ll find significance wherever we can. It’s more a Rorschach test than a film telling us what to think. And it understands this more than anything: that there are few pleasures quite like the sounds and sights of smart a—holes talking. As ever, not only does Sorkin understand what makes cruel geniuses tick. He even likes them.

Keanu Reeves is Evan, an architect alone at home while the fam’s away, who welcomes in two young strangers (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas). Evan tries to play nice but can only resist their come-ons for so long. When he tries to kick them out the morning after, they turn the tables. We may feel for Evan as he’s tortured. Dead again Oh right, zombies. “The Walking Dead” returns Sunday night at 9 p.m. on AMC.
“The Walking Dead” is Community living back. Here’s what you is hard, man need to know for the Season 6 finds Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) start of Season 6. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick
ned.ehrbar@metro.us
Sure, we all had fun with the recently wrapped prequel series “Fear the Walking Dead,” but it’s time to get back to the main course, “The Walking Dead,” and our not-somerry band of zombie apocalypse survivors whose misadventures enter their sixth season Sunday night. Here’s what to expect from the coming episodes.
and his crew still trying to make life work in the fortified suburb of the Alexandria Safe Zone, despite the violent blowup that ended last season after Rick tried to take the reins over the naive residents. This year, he’s still trying to assert authority and preach survival skills, and he’ll inevitably be butting heads with former U.S. Congresswoman Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh), who wants to keep things a bit more civil. And while the team’s main badass women — Michonne

(Danai Gurira) and Carol (Melissa McBride) — seem to have been softening a bit in their new gated community surroundings, don’t necessarily believe it.
Here be zombies Some of the biggest complaints about the past two seasons are that the walkers themselves have been sidelined in favor of more living, breathing threats — but six seasons in, that’s to be expected, as the shambling, ever-present threat of lethal biting just becomes a part of life. Don’t worry, though, this season will see an increase in menacing zombie hordes. And that
increase kicks off the season premiere, with Rick leading a crazy plan to deal with a quarry full of walkers — allegedly more in one episode than the series has ever featured. We all know how Rick’s plans tend to go.
Wolves at the door Which isn’t to say there aren’t still non-undead threats out there to contend with. The latest, teased at the end of last season, are the Wolves, a few of whom infamously tried to take out Morgan (Lennie James), which was just a terrible idea. The Wolves will be out in fuller force this year, and they’ve got their sights

fixed on Alexandria.
Don’t get too attached “The Walking Dead” has always been careful about doling out deaths for its major characters, but with an ensemble of this size, it’s helpful to
remember that no one is ever really safe — even the more high-profile characters like Rick, Daryl or Carol. And a 90-minute premiere leaves a lot of room for casualties, so be prepared to say goodbye to someone before Sunday night is out.

No sleepers? No problem for last week’s winner Brettrau24 didn’t search for sleepers. He built his lineup on players with great matchups and solid statistical profiles. One surprise is that there are three “repeat” players from last week’s winning lineup. Normally, chasing past performance is a sure way to donate your entry fee to the winner, but whether you call Devonta Freeman a fluke or a breakout, his performance has been a part of two big winners as while as helping the Falcons.

Nine long years of waiting for Mets fans comes to an end on Friday. The Mets’ first playoff game since 2006 takes place in Los Angeles against the big-money Dodgers (9:45 p.m. ET, TBS). Both teams made their way to the postseason on the strength of their starting pitchers, and that will be evident in Game 1 as reigning NL Rookie of the Year, Jacob deGrom (14-8, 2.54), duels with the reigning NL Cy Young winner, Clayton Kershaw (16-7, 2.13). DeGrom dominated the Dodgers when he faced them on July 26, posting 7.2 innings of shutout baseball with only two hits allowed. Dodgers players with experience against deGrom outside of this season include Adrian Gonzalez, who is 3 for 8 against him with two home runs and five RBIs. Mets manager Terry Collins would be wise to bring a lefty out of the bullpen (or have deGrom issue an intentional walk) should Gonzalez get an RBI opportunity late in the game. Yasiel Puig also hit a home run against deGrom back in 2014 but that’s his only hit against the Stetson University product, who struck him out three times in six ABs. Former Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley are only 4 for 18 combined against d e Grom, with no home runs or RBIs to speak of between them. K e r -
shaw, who is a dismal 1-5 with a 5.12 ERA in the postseason, has very good numbers against the Mets. He pitched a complete-game, threehit shutout in Queens on July 23. The only Mets with a home run against Kershaw are Juan Uribe, who will not be on the NLDS roster as he is still battling a chest injury, and utility man Kelly Johnson. Kershaw has only given up two other extra-base hits against the Mets, one to Uribe and the other to David Wright. Yoenis Cespedes hasn’t faced Kershaw as a Met but is 0 for 3 in his career against him. The Mets certainly hope the playoff atmosphere will be Kershaw’s undoing once more. Since the Mets will likely have to face Kershaw twice, as well as Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke twice if the series goes the distance, they will have to turn those numbers around and force the Dodgers’ starters out early so they can attack their mediocre bullpen. Aside from closer Kenley Jansen, the Dodgers have no reliable relievers, as evidenced by their bullpen ERA of 3.91, which was 19th in the majors this season. The Mets have no such problems in the bullpen, as the trio of Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia should keep a hold on things late in games, all series long. Game 2 (Saturday, 9:07 p.m., TBS) promises to be just as intense and low-scoring as the Mets have Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 3.24) lined up to face t h e aforementioned Greinke (19-3, 1.66). In Game 3 on Monday night back in New York — the Mets’ first playoff game at Citi Field — the starters are slated to be Matt Harvey and Brett Anderson.

3 things to watch for as the Giants take on San Fran The Giants seek their third straight win as they face the struggling Niners. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Giants head into Sunday’s primetime tilt with the San Francisco 49ers (8:30 p.m., NBC) on a two-game winning streak. And while this may seem like a break for Big Blue, following tough matchups that featured a once-healthy Dallas Cowboys team, the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons, and a solid Buffalo Bills squad in three of the last four weeks, San Francisco cannot be taken lightly. If not for two historic late-game meltdowns, the Giants (2-2) could be unbeaten, so they know how fragile the line is between winning and losing. Look for Big Blue to put forth its best and most complete effort, Sunday night, as they look to take early control in the NFC East.
1
TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS
Sure, the 49ers (1-3) are wounded and a mess, but that doesn’t mean Big Blue can take them lightly. No matter what kind of disarray the once-proud San Francisco franchise is in, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has implored his squad to not look past this game in anticipation of their next contest — a Monday nighter in Philadelphia.
2
TOUGH, GRITTY ‘D’
Coughlin just raves about the defense coming together during the last two wins. He’s especially proud of a unit that is maximizing his “all hands on deck” mantra to the fullest. Not only are the stars like linebacker Devon Kennard and cornerback Prince Amukamara playing well, but unlikely pillars like fullback Nikita Whitlock and defensive end Kerry Wynn have been impact players, too. The former is
Football Sundays @ Bar 360! with Marc Malusis & Sean Landeta
one “tough hombre,” according to Coughlin, since he’s the starting fullback and a late-game pass-rush specialist who has been disruptive during his moments at defensive tackle. The latter has leaped over veterans like George Selvie and Damontre Moore on the depth chart due to his staunch run support and high grades in the defensive meeting room. Coughlin has taken notice of the energy boost that Wynn gives the d-line.
MAN UP! 3NEXT
San Francisco is only averaging 289 yards per game, but with a talented backfield featuring running back Carlos Hyde and athletic quarterback Colin Kaepernick, they’re due for a big game — especially if the Big Blue’s backups aren’t efficient and executing. The Giants will likely be without Kennard, defensive lineman Robert Ayers Jr., or key reserve linebacker Jonathan Casillas, which means they’ll need their backups to step up.
