Iran tested a new precision-guided ballistic missile in defiance of a United Nations ban, signaling an apparent advance in Iranian attempts to improve the accuracy of its missile arsenal. Conviction in 2012 Southie slaying Timothy Kostka faces life without parole for the murder of Barbara Coyne. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

nate.homan@metro.us

A South Boston man was convicted on first-degree murder charges in the death of 67-year-old Barbara Coyne. Timothy Kostka, 30, was found guilty of breaking into Coyne’s East Seventh Street home, premeditated murder and extreme cruelty in her stabbing death. Kostka will be sentenced on Wednesday. It is expected that Judge Mitchell Kaplan will sentence him to life without parole. â€œGiven the facts of this case, first-degree murder

Timothy Kostka, 26, pleaded not guilty. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

was the only appropriate verdict, District Attorney Dan Conley said in a statement Friday. “Barbara Coyne was an innocent victim, and the man who killed her deserves nothing less than life in prison. During the trial, the prosecution showed that Kostka broke into Coyne’s house on April 16, 2012, and intended

to steal high-end fishing equipment from her son. Coyne encountered Kostka while he went rifling through her jewelry box. Kostka then beat her and slashed her throat before continuing to search the home for more valuables, including about $100 in lottery tickets. A relative found Coyne and rushed her to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators were able to lift Kostka’s fingerprints from the jewelry boxes and an envelope. They also found DNA under the victim’s fingernails which belonged to Kostka. Surveillance tapes from a nearby store showed him cashing in the winning lottery tickets. Witness testimony indicated that he used the winnings to buy drugs.

The ballistics unit shipped more than 200 guns recovered from the streets to the Schnitzer Steel Plant where they were shaped into manhole and sewer covers, the BPD said. An oďŹƒcer at the plant said in a statement: “It feels good knowing that the weapons destroyed here today won’t get a second chance to hurt or harm anybody else in the future.â€? Shia LaBeouf gets arrested in Texas Apparently Shia LaBeouf can get arrested in this town — assuming this town is Austin, Texas. In what I can only assume is his latest piece of performance art, LaBeouf was nabbed on famed Sixth Street in the musicand party-friendly capital for public intoxication, jaywalking and general rambunctiousness after acting out on the street in the middle of the afternoon late last week, according to TMZ. I’ve been to Sixth Street, and let me just say it’s news to me that drunken behavior can get you arrested there. He must’ve been giving quite a performance. And it turns out LaBeouf’s brush with the law was carefully timed, as it came just a month after his six-month probation from a March plea deal ended. Doesn’t waste time, does he?

Raven-Symoné strikes out at odd names had just picked up Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) from jail and explained what his idea was from the get-go, but then we wouldn’t have had as much fun. “We were going to have this elaborate ‘Mission: Impossible’ caper with ants, but these two insisted it wasn’t necessary,” Pym explains. Man, practicality is a total bummer.

Former child star and current daytime talk bauble RavenSymoné is learning the hard way that people with unnecessary accents in their odd names shouldn’t throw stones. While discussing a recent study proving that Americans discriminate

based on “ghetto” names, RavenSimoné offered, “I’m very discriminatory against ... those names. I’m not going to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”

How Ant-Man should have ended Sure, Marvel’s “Ant-Man” was a fun lark of a superhero caper, but the folks at How It Should Have Ended have a decent point about how convoluted the plot involved actually is. Maybe things would’ve been a lot simpler if Hank Pym (Michael Douglas)

So you’ve gotta be cool with that. And second, this is the second important tip: Saying you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy?

That’s what’s known as ‘off message’ in politics. you can’t say something like that. Do you really think this country is going to elect a black guy from the south side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States? That is crazy! That’s cray!” What do you think the chances are of any of the current candidates feeling so comfortable using the word “cray”?

That ’90s nostalgia tour is just an idea — for now Rumor has it that the Backstreet Boys might be embarking on a tour with the Spice Girls — minus, one assumes, Victoria Beckham. Well, it’s not necessarily not happening, but it’s also not necessarily actually a solid plan at the moment. “I actually did a little Twitter shout-out to Mel B because we’re friends and I said, ‘Hey this could be a cool idea. What if we did a Backstreet Boys-Spice Girls tour?’” Nick Carter explains to E! News. “I think this would be that last hurrah — the two big groups from the late ’90s. Maybe do a world tour, stadiums. … It’s just an idea.”

Gina Rodriguez tells all First comes baby, then comes marriage in Season 2 of “Jane the Virgin.”

This was your first big role, but you settled very quickly into being a strong advocate for the show. What was it that made that responsibility easy for you? I think it’s really easy to be yourself.

LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

So the public is getting the real Gina Rodriguez? My father used to always say, “If you don’t lie, you never have to remember anything.”

lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

The titular Jane in “Jane the Virgin” had a very full year. She got accidentally artificially inseminated, fell in and out of love with the sperm donor, met her father for the first time and got tangled up with a criminal syndicate headed up by the mysterious Sin Rostro. By the end of the year, she’d given birth, but Sin Rostro had kidnapped the baby. It’s a lot for one woman to take on, but Jane always seems up to the challenge, in large part due to the star-making performance of Gina Rodriguez, who plays her. Rodriguez, who says Jane will be “a fierce f—ing mom,” is looking forward to exploring what that means for the character. Will we still see a love triangle between Jane, baby daddy Rafael and

her old love Michael? I was actually only given a few spoiler alerts, because they know I’ll tell everything, and I really don’t know anything. But I do know the love triangle is going to continue. I do also know that Jane’s going

to get married in Season 2. So who knows! With marriage comes a lot of other things, and who is she going to marry? But one thing that is strong is that motherhood, and her trying to preserve her dreams, is going to be a very relevant topic. Women and men both, when they have children, how do they continue to grow as humans? How do they continue to be normal, and still themselves? Any dream guest stars? Oh, we’re going to get Luis Guzman. That’s

definitely going to happen — at least in my head it is. I would love Adam Rodriguez to come play. Freddy Rodriguez would be awesome. e. I mean, Ricky Mar-tin, Mark Anthony, y, Enrique Iglesias. employees. “Most people chafe under too much authority, too much control, adds Lipman. “If someone is coming down too hard on you, chances are you’re not going to relate really well to it — you might do it because you have to for a while, but it’s not really the kind of environment that’s going to make you want to come back for more on a regular basis.

Set employee goals at the outset One way to minimize conflict down the road is to lay out your employees’ objectives clearly so that they understand their goals and responsibilities. “Spend a lot of time on the results that you and the organization expect of them — behaviorally, if that’s an issue, in terms of productivity, whatever the metrics are — and make sure that these results are as clear and measurable as they can be, advises Lipman. “And have the employees agree to them, he adds. “What you end up with is this sort of rational standard that you can go back and point to

A broken system

“I was a manager at a Fortune 500 company for almost 25 years,â€? Lipman says, citing a culture that often prized Type A personalities over more empathetic ones. “And one of the many things that I saw over the years was that management was not very eective.â€? In fact, a Gallup survey that found only 30 percent of employees are engaged in their jobs — which means a whopping 70 percent aren’t. “There’s an enormous cost in productivity there,â€? says Lipman. “Over $400 billion a year.â€?

if certain demands aren’t being met, he adds. “So when you go to them, it doesn’t make you look like the bad guy.

Find out what motivates your employees Not all workers are motivated by the desire to please their bosses, like it or not. But the good thing about being a communicative and empathetic boss is that you can find out what

makes your employees tick — whether it’s flexibility, so they can take time off to go to a kid’s baseball games or work from home sometimes to care for an elder family member; a bigger office; or, yes, money. “Good managers who take the time to get to understand their employees will start to understand what they really want — and the motivational levers that they can pull to get them to commit to their jobs, says Lipman.

Know you can’t avoid conflict entirely You can be the coolest boss in the world, but you’re still going to be placed in uncomfortable situations. Yes, conflict is scary, and no one likes it — even those who tend to deal with it better than others don’t necessarily enjoy it. “The notion of management without high standards isn’t management at all, Lipman says. “There’s nothing that’s mutually exclusive between being a decent person and treating people well and also requiring a high quality of work.

in a more natural and authentic voice,” she explains. “Once you’ve told it out loud, and you’ve either audio recorded it or video recorded it, you transcribe it and you use that as the first draft as your essay.”

More and more colleges have made the essay portion of the application process optional. But you should still write one. “When admissions officers are looking at a group of students whose numbers are all the same they make decisions based on who they imagine would be better members of their community,” says Carol Barash, a former college admissions officer and current CEO of Story2, an online platform that helps students write admissions essays. “And the way you show what kind of community member you’ll be and the way you bring your personality to life is through your essays.”

Trust your instincts ISTOCK

The good news is that writing an admissions essay isn’t as scary as it seems. We asked Barash for her tips.

Start with you Your essay should reflect on your past, how you’ve gotten to where you are, and where you see college taking you. “Think of your life as a journey and the key events in them,” says Barash. Then pick one of those events and start off with that. “For the personal statement, you want to take a statement, a moment

from your past that has been definitional for you,” says Barash. “It doesn’t have to be some big huge fancy or prestigious moment.”

Tell a story “Do not write a fiveparagraph essay that you would write for your English class — that’s just the wrong structure and voice,” says Barash. Instead, tell your story out loud, whether to a friend or [recording] into your phone. “It unlocks your creativity; it starts your essay

Because you want your story to be an authentic expression of yourself, you don’t want to have too many people tampering with it. “Every adult you’ll talk to will have a different idea — a different 40-year-old or 50-yearold idea — of what your essay should be like,” says Barash. “But if you’re a high school student applying to college, you’re 17 or 18. You don’t want to sound like a 40 year old; you want to sound like yourself. So, a lot of advice isn’t really helpful in terms of accessing your own voice and your own story and who you uniquely are.”

Pats remain perfect The Patriots defense led the way Sunday in a 30-6 road romp over the Cowboys. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Cowboys (2-3) were once the most-hated football franchise in the U.S. despite owning the moniker of “America’s Team.” The Patriots (4-0) have long since assumed the throne of the NFL’s most disliked, and Sunday afternoon they continued their “imperial march” of 2015, beating Dallas in their house, 30-6. The core of the dislike is certainly based off of jealousy, and at AT&T Stadium the Pats gave the rest of the league plenty more reason to be envious. Tom Brady was an

efficient 20 of 27 for 275 yards and two TDs, Julian Edelman caught four balls for 120 yards and a touchdown and the Patriots’ defense played their most dominant game of the season thus far. The Pats defense forced six Dallas threeand-outs in the first half and did not allow a Cowboys touchdown. Dallas QB Brandon Weeden was held to just 188 yards passing and was picked off by Logan Ryan. Dallas still had life early in the second half but Pats running back Dion Lewis stomped that out. Lewis made a one-handed catch coming out of the backfield and then juked out what seemed like the entire Dallas defense before entering the end zone to put the Pats up, 20-3, with 9:50 left in the third quarter. New England got off to a relatively slow start

against Dallas as the score was tied, 3-3, after one quarter. Brady was hammered by the Cowboys defense in the first half as they registered five sacks in the first two quarters. The reinstated Greg Hardy accounted for two of them and got to Brady plenty throughout the course of the game. Sunday was the first time Brady was sacked five times in one half for the first time in his career. But Brady and the Patriots’ offense figured things out by the end of the second quarter as they went 55 yards on seven plays in 2:18 to go up 10-3. Brady scored the Pats’ first touchdown himself with a patented one-yard, QB TD plunge. Stephen Goskowski booted the longest field goal of his stellar career, a 57-yarder, to put the Pats up 13-3 heading to the half.

Around the NFL More scores from Week 5: Bears 18, Chiefs 17 Jay Cutler dropped the snap, picked it back up, and fired a seven-yard touchdown to Matt Forte to win the game and complete a 14-point comeback for the Bears’ second win in as many weeks. Browns 33, Ravens 30 (OT) Josh McCown set a new Browns single-game passing record with 457 yards by completing passes to nine different receivers and Travis Coons was good every time Cleveland called on him, including overtime, where he hit his fourth field goal of the game. Falcons 25, Redskins 19 (OT) The Falcons stayed undefeated by winning ugly. Julio Jones may have been banged up, but he was still able to dive on top of a Devonta Freeman fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Freeman himself contributed 197 total yards. Robert Alford had a pick-six in OT to clinch the Atlanta win.

Bills 14, Titans 13 The Bills finished the game on a 14-3 run to overcome a 10-0 deficit. In a game where offensive yards came at a premium (less than 500 gained combined), Tyrod Taylor had a pair of 20-plus yard scrambles, one of which ended in the end zone for the Bills’ first score.

sports@metro.us

For three quarters, it looked like the Seahawks (2-3) were a test Cincinnati wouldn’t pass, as the Legion of Boom harried Andy Dalton (30 for 44, 331 yards, 2 TD, INT) and jumped on turnovers to build a 24-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Earl Thomas intercepted Dalton, trying to force the ball to A.J. Green in the end zone and had a big return before a penalty on Michael Bennett partially wiped out the return. Bennett later forced a fumble that Bobby Wagner picked up and returned 23 yards for a score. But in that fourth, Tyler Eifert

Marvin Jones and the Bengals edged the Seahawks in overtime Sunday. GETTY IMAGES

caught his second touchdown pass from Dalton, and Dalton followed that up by running one in for his own. Mike Nugent would then hit a 31-yard field goal with 2:17 left to beckon overtime. Nugent was called on again in the extra session

and delivered again from 42 yards out with 3:26 left in overtime. The Bengals are 5-0 for the third time in franchise history. Eagles 39, Saints 17 The Eagles shook off another slow start to

pile on the points in the second half, where they outscored the Saints, 2910. DeMarco Murray had his best game yet for the Eagles, finishing with 120 total yards and a score, while Ryan Mathews had 100 yards on just 11 touches. Fletcher Cox

Bucs 38, Jaguars 31 Doug Martin took over the game against the Jaguars with several highlight reel runs, and he finished with 158 total yards and three touchdowns on the day. Blake Bortles had 300 yards and four passing touchdowns of his own for the Jaguars, two of them to Allen Robinson.
