Boston’s dirty water was not going to cut it for Bent Water Brewery. That’s why its founders headed a few miles north to Lynn, where the water is, apparently, fresher than its reputation. For Aaron Reames, pouring his heart into Bent Water Brewing Co. is “a hobby on

steroids.” Once his fraternity brother opened Switchback Brewery in Vermont, he knew it was time to tap into the craftbeer world. Reames began brewing his own beer in 2007 and decided to go bigger once he saw the advantages his biostudies background gave him. Now, he plans to take his potion production from the basement into the big time, joining more than 60 breweries in Massachusetts. “You might think that seeing how people have been brewing beer or something like it for
over 2,000 years, we might have found every way to make beer,” Reames said. “But on a chemistry
industrial center. “They pull water from three lakes, and it’s very clean,” Reames said. “They don’t have to add any chloramine, which is the really toxic stuff that will kill just about anything. So technically, we don’t even have to run the water through carbon filters. “We do everything right. When you analyze the water quality here, we see that this is prime water to brew with,” he said. The site is under construction, but the vision is in place.

And Bent Water will be the first brewery east of the Mississippi River to use concrete vintner tanks. “The concrete tanks are commonly used in Sonoma, Reames said. “The molecular properties in this specific style of concrete augment the yeast fermentation and create a very smooth, almost Merlot-style taste. Head brewer John Strom is in Munich

Reames, who is the primary investor, will be more of a weekend warrior in the process. “I’m not hanging up the day job, Reames, whose 9-to-5 is in financial services, said. “But instead of going out and buying a sports car or something like that, I decided I wanted to invest in brewing beer. Bent Water expects to open its doors and brew for the public in January.

All-E-ZPass Mass. coming down the Pike Ah, the E-ZPass. That little white box that lets you roll right through toll booths without having to dig for change. Convenience for commuters, yes. Perennial problem for procrastinators, definitely. Massachusetts is moving ever closer to a full E-ZPass conversion, with the goal of getting every driver in the state off the cash-pay method for good. Email list subscribers got another reminder in their inboxes this week: “Know anyone still using cash? Encourage them to … join E-ZPass to save time and money.” Millions have made the switch, according to MassDOT. As of August, 2015, there were 2.51 million E-ZPasses on the road, up from 2.26 million in 2014, according to
a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. But as the consistent lines in cash-only lanes prove, there are still many who haven’t gotten theirs. Dom Capossela, 73, said he’s had his E-ZPass for years. “I got mine as soon as it came out because it was handy,” the Boston resident told Metro. “When you use it it’s really sweet to pass the long line of cash customers and go on your way.” SPENCER BUELL

BRIEF Man commits “lewd act” at Cambridge church altar: police Cambridge police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly broke into a church, dressed himself in a priest’s robe, and apparently masturbated on the altar. Investigators on Wednesday released grainy surveillance images of the suspect, who allegedly defiled the religious shrine at 3:15 a.m. on Sept. 29. at St. Sava Serbian Church. The suspect allegedly entered through an unlocked door, police said. “Once inside, the suspect put on the priests clothing and committed a lewd act on the altar of the church,” investigators said in a statement on Mass Most Wanted. The church has security cameras and has the incident recorded, police said. The man is described as a white male, in this 20s, with glasses. Ex-NBA star Lamar Odom reported in critical condition It was the latest episode in Odom’s roller-coaster personal and professional life.
Lamar Odom, a former professional basketball player and reality TV star, was reported to be fighting for his life in a Las Vegas hospital on Wednesday after he was found unresponsive at a legal brothel. The 35-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers standout and ex-husband of Khloe Kardashian suffered a medical emergency on Tuesday at the Love Ranch brothel in Crystal, Nevada, and was taken to the hospital, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office said. Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, where Odom was taken, declined to comment on Odom’s condition, citing patient confidentiality. But celebrity website TMZ.com cited unidentified sources as saying Odom was in a coma and that some of his organs were failing. Another outlet, E!, also cited unnamed sources in reporting that Odom suffered brain damage and at least one stroke, and was on a ventilator after taking multiple drugs. The E! cable TV channel airs the reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” The brothel’s owner, Dennis Hof, said that, during his three-day stay, Odom had been taking large amounts of “herbal Viagra,” a nonprescription product which can dramatically lower blood pressure and interact with other medications. Khloe Kardashian, whose whirlwind romance with Odom was captured in “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and its spin-off, “Khloe and Lamar,” was at his bedside, TMZ and Us Weekly reported. The couple split in 2013 after four years of marriage and their divorce was finalized in

July, though she has remained in close contact with him. Odom publicist Eve Sarkisyan said in a statement that “family and friends are extremely concerned for Lamar” but warned against “false information being circulated unofficially.” Odom’s hospitalization followed a downturn in a 14-season career with National Basketball Association teams, including the Lakers from 20042011. On top of the pressures of the life of a top NBA player, Odom, whose mother died when he was
12, had to deal with being a reality TV star after marrying Kardashian. The 6-foot-10 athlete has long been reported to have had issues with cocaine abuse, although this has never been publicly confirmed. He has admitted only to using marijuana. During the 2000-2001 season, Odom was suspended for violating the NBA’s antidrug policy. In 2013, he pleaded no contest in Los Angeles to a charge of driving under the influence and was ordered to undergo rehabilitation for three months for alcohol abuse. REUTERS

Twitter takes Google exec Kordestani for chairman Kordestani’s extensive sales experience could prove a good counterpoint to Twitter co-founder Dorsey’s product knowledge and vision, analysts said. Twitter lured Google executive Omid Kordestani to become the social media company’s executive chairman, the latest step in the company’s turnaround efforts under Jack Dorsey, who last week was named permanent CEO. Kordestani’s extensive sales experience could prove a good counterpoint to Twitter co-founder Dorsey’s product knowledge and vision, analysts said. “It’s rare you get to be at a company with an amazing business that’s also transforming the world, Kordestani tweeted. “I’ve had good fortune to be at three: Netscape, @google, and now @twitter. Kordestani, most recently senior adviser at Google, will join Twitter’s board and will have an operational role at
the company, a Twitter spokeswoman said. That will include help with board and employee recruiting and advising executive leadership. Twitter said last week it would hire an outsider as chairman to allay concerns about Dorsey’s dual role as head of mobile payments company Square Inc, which is reportedly planning an IPO. “It’s quite a coup, said James Cordwell, analyst at Atlantic Equities. “He was very wellrespected at Google. Twitter shares, which are down 18 percent this year, were up about 1 percent in afternoon trading. The announcement could lead to other changes to the board, long criticized for having too many former Twitter CEOs, an excess that investors and analysts said had hampered the company’s ability to attract executives and high-level employees. Kordestani, 51, joined Google as its 11th employee in 1999 and stayed for 10 years. After a few years away, he returned full-time in October 2014 as chief business officer. REUTERS

The company said on Wednesday it added 0.88 million U.S. subscribers in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with its forecast of 1.15 million. “Our overforecast in the U.S. for Q3 was due to slightly higher-than-expected involuntary churn [inability to collect], which we believe was driven in part by the ongoing transition

Netix has been aggressively building its overseas presence as its key U.S. market matures. The company said revenue rose to $1.74 billion from $1.64 billion a year earlier. Netix forecast adding about 1.65 million customers in the United States in the current quarter. Vice President Joe Biden faced an altered political dynamic Wednesday after Hillary Clinton reasserted her command of the Democratic Party presidential race during a debate that may have left little room for him to run. Analysts widely hailed Clinton, 67, as turning in a nimble, effective performance Tuesday night, perhaps easing the fears of some Democrats fretting that the flap over her use of a private email server while in the Obama administration was torpedoing her candidacy for the 2016 election. In doing so, she may have dampened calls for Biden to make a belated entrance into the race while also blunting the threat from insurgent candidate Bernie Sanders, the 74-year-old sena-

Gender equality in ‘Star Wars’
Remember back during Star Wars Celebration when the new film’s first teaser was released? When Kathleen Kennedy talked about how important it was to her that there were more women in the “Star Wars” universe? That moment had me standing and applauding along with thousands of other women in the audience and around the world. Princess Leia was a groundbreaking character, but she was largely alone in terms of her sex. The prequels didn’t really do much better, with a single lead female, a few handmaidens and a female on the Jedi council who didn’t really speak. The prospect of my beloved franchise with more women sounded amazing. When the original casting announcement came out for “The Force Awakens,” the single female actor caused a backlash, but since then we’ve seen announcements for quite a number of female

new canon’s extended universe as well. In “Star Wars Rebels,” which is canon, we not only got the return of “The Clone Wars” star Ahsoka Tano, but we have Hera and Sabine, the pilot and the warrior whose origins will be revealed in depth in Season 2. Where I’ve seen it done best is in the books,

“Moving Target,” “Lost Stars” and “Aftermath.” These books finally — finally — give us the 50/50 split between male and female characters that not even our modern-day TV shows and films can manage. It’s like there is an even gender split in real life or something! Imagine that! Even better? In those
books, women are equally represented as people in power, rogues, characters both strong and weak, bounty hunters, government officials, military commanders. There is even a mention of gender reassignment. No one seems to have any issue with women in power. The issues people have are with each person as
an individual. It’s almost jarring in its unfamiliarity. It’s been said many times that it’s always easiest to tackle issues in the world through science fiction before it is in reality. Thank you, “Star Wars,” for taking this on.

Amy Ryan will do anything for Spielberg The Oscar nominee talks “Bridge of Spies” — and her bit part in “War of the Worlds.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Amy Ryan is a serious and brilliant actress, but the Oscar nominee slips right into lighter fare, too. She was Michael Scott’s endearingly dorky object of affection over a good stretch of “The Office,” and the same week that her new Steven Spielberg drama “Bridge of Spies” comes out, she pops up in “Goosebumps.” In “Bridge of Spies,” though, she’s straight-faced, playing Mary, the wife of Tom Hanks’ Cold War-era lawyer defending a Soviet spy (Mark Rylance). This is not your first Spielberg. You were in “War of the Worlds” as “Neighbor with Toddler.” [Laughs] “Yeah, Steven,

why didn’t you name me?” “You’re going to die before the credits start.” [On “Bridge of Spies”], it was nice to sit with him in an intimate family setting, talking about human behavior and try to create an active, living household with 12 things going on at once. Your role in “Bridge of Spies” is also not huge.
They said, “This is not a very big part, but it’s an important part.” “Yes, of course I want to make a movie with you. Why would I say no?” [Laughs] You could have bragging rights as the one who turned down Spielberg. Maybe someone else did that before they called me. [Laughs] Maybe they’re cool. I don’t need
to be cool. What was he like, now that you really got a chance to work with him? Even though I did have a small part in “War of the Worlds,” Steven really did direct me. He takes time with the details, whether it’s a small part or the lead character. It’s not like some second A.D. coming
over there and saying, “You have to stand to the left.” He’s all about creating human behavior and overlapping dialogue. The scenes aren’t just about coverage. They’re about a character’s point of view. The scene where we exit the courthouse, even though I had no lines he says, “It’s about Mary. This is the first time she’s out in the public eye. The public is encroaching on her life. She’s terrified.” He has the flashes going off in my face and the crowd is coming in, and this ups Mary’s protest, that she thinks he shouldn’t take the case. Her family is in danger. But she knew there was a greater good. She was just fiercely protective of their family, like any good, sane mother would be.
For the kids I did want to ask, lastly, about the two children’s films you have on the docket. You’re in “Goosebumps” and “Monster Trucks.” Was that just a coincidence or were you actively looking for stuff that was for a younger audience? I have a kid. My kid can’t see either of these films because she’s too young. But it’s nice that my nieces can finally see something that I’ve done. [Laughs] They’re usually just watching “Gone Baby Gone.” Yeah, they have that on a loop in the house.

A couple years ago, soul singer Leon Bridges was working as a dishwasher in Texas. Now, he’s selling out concerts across the U.S., and his first album, “Coming Home” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Album charts this past summer. Comparisons to Otis Redding and Sam Cooke are inevitable with Bridge’s throwback ’60s musical style, but he brings his own hip-hop flare to the table, making his music stand out.

Bridges’ father introduced him to musicians like the ones he’s so often compared to today. “My dad was always keeping up with black history,” Bridges says. But he adds that it wasn’t until he was older and getting into soul music that he really started giving them a close listen. Bridges tells us he was “definitely nervous” to go full-on retro on his album. “I didn’t know if I could do it because I came from a hip-hop and modern R&B background,” he says. “I could have gone the way of using just bits and pieces,

but I really wanted to go all the way in. I was so in love with the music, but of course it’s going to come out my own way.”
Community college and coffeehouses It wasn’t too long ago that Bridges played his first show at his community college in Texas. “One of my friends played the piano and we sang some cover songs,”
he says. “I was nervous but also so excited because it was my first time playing in front of people.” The 26-year-old taught himself guitar, first by watching YouTube videos and then asking some of his friends, who already knew how to play. “There was an open mic at this coffee shop I went to and I had a lot of friends who were guitar players there,” he says.
“They showed me a lot of things. … But over the years, I developed this certain style, and it’s very sloppy, but it’s a great tool to write songs.”
Keeping it loose Part of what gives “Coming Home” its raw, authentic sound is the way it was recorded. “We recorded it in this building that was basically a lot of different business-
es and lofts, and it had a bar,” Bridges describes. “So when people walked in, they would hear us recording.” He says some of what’s on the album wasn’t rehearsed at all, it just came to him on the fly. “Basically what you hear on ‘Coming Home’ is when I was playing acoustic guitar around town. There were certain things that came out of nowhere.”

Basque in glory in northern Spain
The cities of northern Spain have much to offer tourists in terms of art, culture, history and, of course, traditional Basque cuisine. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the only thing that ever happens in Pamplona is the running of the bulls through the streets during the weeklong Festival of San Fermin each July. But Pamplona is one of several exciting cities in the northeast corner of Spain that have just as much to offer as the better known southern cities. San Sebastian, an easy hour’s drive north of Pamplona, is one of the most popular holiday resorts for Spaniards but is less known to visitors from overseas. In 2016, that will change when San Sebastian becomes
a European Capital of Culture, alerting the outside world to its many attractions. Beyond its wonderful beach curving around the Bahia de La Concha is the historic Old Town with ancient churches and the Museo San Telmo (Santelmomuseoa.com). If you want to find out about the Basque culture of this part of Spain, this museum, set in an old monastery, is an absorbing delight. An hour west along the coast is Bilbao, the largest Basque city, with its wealth of museums. The most notable is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Guggenheim-bilbao. es/en), looking just as futuristic and striking now as it did when it opened in 1997. It concentrates on modern art with work by artists including Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Jeff Koons, but it also displays the work of Basque artists. Notable too is the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, dating from 1908, with works from Goya, El Greco, Gauguin, Cezanne, Francis
Bacon and more. A two-hour drive through the dramatic mountainous Parque Natural Aizkorri-Aratz takes you back to Pamplona, capital of the Navarre region. Founded in Roman times, it is as bustling and buzzing as any modern Spanish city, with cafes and tapas bars serving Basque food. It has
medieval walls, a vast main plaza, an impressive Gothic cathedral, a fascinating old town, and churches and museums, including the must-see Museo de Navarra. Avoid the bulls, and feast instead on the culture. INSIGHT GUIDES | MIKE GERRARD AND DONNA DAILEY
European Capitals of Culture
In 1983, Melina Mercouri, a Greek minister of culture and former actress, came up with the idea of designating one European city to be the City of Culture each year. Now they’re called Capitals of Culture, and two cities share the honor. Start planning your travels, as the cities put on their best face with new museums, special exhibitions and one-off events. 2015 It’s not too late to
visit Mons in Belgium or Pilsen in the Czech Republic (known for the beer Pilsner Urquell). 2016 Sharing duties with San Sebastian will be Wroclaw in Poland, recently voted one of the world’s best cities to live in. 2017 The Cultural Capitals will be Denmark’s second city, Aarhus, and Paphos on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

NOT DRAFTED? NO PROBLEM Talent is our top priority when drafting our season-long teams. If we just chase opportunity, we end with #regrets like Davante Adams and C.J. Anderson. But now that we’re six weeks into the season, we start looking more at opportunity when prioritizing transactions. The talented guys aren’t available, and big volume with mediocre talent can work well. We also now know which teams are going to be playing from behind a majority of the time, which often bodes well for certain kinds of players. So ignore the undrafted stigma and hop on board with these relative unknowns:
The need for Snead Willie Snead wasn’t even supposed to make the Saints’ final roster coming out of camp. Now he’s their No. 1 receiver. It’s not because of injury, it’s because he’s earned
Week 6 studs A look at players who you should add to your roster this week: Christine Michael, RB, Cowboys — Dallas is reportedly considering starting C-Mike over Joseph Randle following their bye. Gary Barnidge, TE, Browns — Flew under the radar for far too long. Actually a very good athlete in a pass-happy offense. Golden Tate, WR, Lions — It’s an ideal spot for the dormant Lions offense to break out against the Bears and get Tate his first TD of the year. John Brown, WR, Cardinals — Expect Brown to set a new season-high for yards as Carson Palmer shreds the talent-deficient Steelers secondary this week. Kamar Aiken, WR, Ravens — It’s the second straight week on this list for Aiken, who gets an even better matchup this time around, against the 49ers.

it with reliably excellent play for four straight months. With Brandin Cooks getting exposed as a complementary player, Marques Colston toast/hurt and Brandon Coleman disappointing, Snead is Drew Brees’ go-to guy. Although this pass game isn’t what it once was, that’s still a big role. Willie should be penned into lineups going forward.
Go West, young man Charcandrick West outsnapped Knile Davis 18-4 following Jamaal Charles’ knee injury in Week 5. West also ran circles around Davis in the preseason, winning the backup job and holding it through the first month of the season. The Chiefs worked out free agents Ben Tate, Pierre Thomas and Bryce Brown this week, but didn’t sign any of them. It’s another vote of confidence in West, who plays well in the pass game — a crucial tool for Andy Reid as evidenced by the likes of Charles and Brian Westbrook. Don’t be afraid to blow 70-80 percent of your FAAB budget on West.

Mr. Wilson’s neighborhood Marquess Wilson is the real deal. Finally adding bulk to his 6-foot-4 frame, he’s recorded a 12-165-1 line over the last two weeks while Alshon Jeffery (calf) has sat out. Even when Jeffery returns, Wilson has significant appeal in this mess of a Bears season. Expect
plenty of three-wide sets, with Wilson as the downfield target and Eddie Royal underneath. The Bears must develop their young talent.
NFL news It’s not always true that
a wide receiver is only as good as his quarterback. DeAndre Hopkins is a beast in spite of Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. Allen Robinson is going to eat even with Blake Bortles. But sometimes, the quarterback play is so inept that it kills even the

best wideouts. That’s the case with Antonio Brown, as Mike Vick can no longer complete a simple screen or slant accurately. All he can do is use his still-big arm to chuck it deep, but that’s not Brown’s game. Don’t be afraid to sit him Sunday.
