A U.S.-led coalition air strike has killed Sanafi al-Nasr, a Saudi citizen and the leading financier for al Qaeda and its Khorasan Group offshoot, the Pentagon said on Sunday. The Pentagon said al-Nasr had organized routes for new recruits to travel from Pakistan to Syria through Turkey and played a significant role in the group’s finances. He was killed in an air strike on Thursday in northwest Syria, it said. Al-Nasr worked for al Qaeda’s Iran-based network before taking charge of the militant group’s finances in 2012. REUTERS

Pour-it-yourself beer taps: Hub next? Self-serve brewdispensers haven’t made a splash in Boston yet. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

In a state whose role in beer culture is well established — it’s the birthplace of the iconic Sam Adams brand and home to new craft brewers and taprooms every year — one sudsy modern novelty has yet to take hold: self-serve brews. For the uninitiated, pour-it-yourself beer taps come in many forms: a rig that looks like a soda fountain and operates on a prepaid card system, for example, or a tap built into a booth at a bar (it will keep drinks colder than a pitcher, the thinking goes). They’ve been popping up in pubs and sports venues around the country, as well as some cruise
ships, over the past few years, but have yet to make a sudsy splash in Massachusetts. Metro could track down just two in the state, at Amherst Brewing Company in Western Mass. And at Irish pub chain Waxy O’Connors, neither of which are in Boston. The Littlest Bar in the Financial District used to have a small setup, but it has since closed. Now, at least two selfpouring beer gadget companies have their eyes on fitting the Hub with the DIY taps, they told Metro. “It’s only a matter of time, said Josh Goodman, founder and CEO of Chicago-based PourMyBeer. Goodman’s company, which has donated tap systems to “Bar Rescue, the pub-renovation TV show, has to its credit self-serve gadgets in more than two-dozen states. Demand has been steady around the coun-

try, he said, but not here. “We’ve had a few inquiries but no one has brought our concept to Boston the way we brought it to other cities like Kansas City, he said — he said he recently outfitted a Missouri bar with 40 self-serve taps. DraftServ, a company that recently installed soda machine-style payby-the-ounce systems at two stadiums in Philadelphia, told Metro it hopes to add Boston sports teams to its portfolio. “We’d love to. It’d be great to be doing things certain at Fenway or the Garden, said Jose Hevia, CEO of DraftServ, a self-serve beer installer based in Georgia. “We haven’t gotten anywhere with it. Hevia, speaking on the phone from Tampa, where he planned to meet with Florida sports teams, said he sent emails to leadership at Fenway Park, but they turned it down. Representatives for Aramark, the ballpark’s concessions operator, didn’t confirm the exchange for Metro by Sunday. For fans and bar patrons, the company heads said, the allure of self-serve beer is avoiding long drink lines and

the novelty of tech-enabled boozing. For stadiums and watering holes, they said, the system means less wasted beer and increased sales. “When you give people convenience and control they will frequent more often, Hevia said. “You sell more beer that way. It isn’t Massachusetts’ Puritan, happy-hourquashing streak that is keeping the novelty beer-serving trend at bay, they said. The niche be-yourown-bartender industry has so far been able to win over alcohol regulators, touting safeguards prevent issues like overserving by using a builtin maximum number of beers-per-hour and machine-monitoring onduty humans. The Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, the chief decider on state liquor law, told Metro it hadn’t made any rulings on self-serve beer. Kris Foster, ABCC’s legal counsel did express
some concern, but said there was nothing in state law to prevent a well-monitored pour-ityourself beer service. “Of course, the commission is always open to entrepreneurial spirit in the country and are very business-friendly, Foster said. “It’s just something we would want to review to make sure it’s legal. State beer distributors expressed some curiosity about the devices. “From a consumer’s standpoint, the convenience of being able to do that is interesting, said Brian Murphy, director of sales and marketing for the Massachusetts Beverage Alliance, an industry coalition. “But I think you don’t want to take away the human-to-human interface: going to the bar and ordering a beer. Representatives for the TD Garden declined to comment for this story. Requests for comment from Gillette Stadium had not yet been returned.

BRIEFS Police fish naked man out of Boston Harbor The same weekend a layerswearing mob of thousands descended to the banks of the Charles for the annual regatta, one man stripped down and took a naked plunge into Boston’s icy offshore waters, according to state police. The unusual encounter Saturday afternoon began when bystander alerted a state trooper about a nude man standing near the Steriti Memorial Rink on Commercial Street at about 1 p.m., police said. The man took off through a nearby baseball field, jumped a fence and dove into the chilly Boston Harbor, the police report said. Troopers from the State Police Marine Unit fished the man out of the harbor and administered first aid for possible hypothermia, police said. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to the report. Boston University sexual assault reported Boston University police Sunday were searching for an
unknown male suspect they believe broke into a female student’s room and sexually assaulted her. A woman on campus reported a man had entered her student housing residence on Harry Agganis Way some time after 2 a.m. Sunday morning, attacked her, then fled the area, according to a community alert from the school’s police department. The suspect was described as a white man standing between 5-feet-8 and 5-feet-10 inches, of medium build with brown hair and wearing a dark-colored button-down long-sleeve shirt and down vest. “Students are reminded to secure their residence at all times, and report any suspicious activity to the BU police, the alert read. Police asked anyone with information to call 617-3532110 or use an anonymous text service by texting BU, then a tip to 847411. BU students received an alert message at 12:59 p.m. Sunday, student newspaper The Daily Free Press reported. SPENCER BUELL

Snowflake sightings reported in Boston A flurry of tweets about snow were popping up on Twitter on Sunday. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
Oh no. Not yet! The Boston Twitterverse was reporting seeing snowflakes in the city on Sunday. They may be right, according to Alan Dunham, Taunton-based meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “We have some very cold air aloft, so even though we started off with bright sunshine and we got some heating, we have these afternoon showers and some flurries,” Dunham told Metro. “It’s not going to accumulate into anything. ... Most everything that falls will melt on contact or shortly thereafter.”
The City of Boston received its first shipment of salt to the Frontage Road facility on Thursday in preparation for the winter ahead. ALL PHOTOS NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

counties. Snow this early wouldn’t exactly be unprecedented. The earliest measurable snowfall on record in Boston came Oct. 10, 1979, when 0.2 inches

of the stuff fell, according to stats compiled by Weather Underground. Even earlier than that, the earliest-in-the-season snow — unmeasurable “trace amounts” of it — came Oct. 2, 1899, according to a report from MIT. Last year, the first flakes, and flake-inspired online freak outs of the season came to Boston Nov. 2. The anticipation of snow was particularly tense this season, with winter preparedness work underway on the T and new plows and heaters ready to be deployed. It still feels like only yesterday the apocalyptic storms were delivering punishing, recordsmashing piles to the
Hub. More than 108 inches of snow pummeled Boston last year, and the honor of holding the title for crappiest winter of all time (second crappiest was the 107 inches of 1995-1996) was little consolation. And then there was that resilient snow bank: that ungodly heap of ice and putrid garbage that stuck around in the Seaport until mid-July, just to taunt us. “Our nightmare is officially over!” Gov. Charlie Baker tweeted on the day the pile died, melting once and for all. And on Sunday, Boston got its first reminder that slowly but surely, the nightmare would soon return.
But don’t expect to be digging out your car anytime soon, and don’t expect to see fisticuffs over parking spaces or cold-weather delays on the Commuter Rail coming your way before Halloween. But just wait. Enjoy it while it’s cute and see if you can’t spot a flake in Boston before it melts away, and brace yourselves for the real deal. That is, unless you’re up on Mount Washington in New Hampshire, like Mount Washington Observatory Meteorologist Tom Padham. On his perch he saw the summit’s first snow of the season on Saturday — at least two inches, he wrote on the observatory’s website. The flakes came after some very chilly temperatures in Greater Boston. The NWS issued a freeze warning for Saturday night into Sunday morning. The sightings didn’t exactly fit the bill for the state’s mid-autumn celebrations usually filled with precipitation of the leafy variety. Plus who wants to see flurries at a postsummer celebration of oysters, like revelers at the Wellfleet Oysterfest did? No one, that’s who. The Massachusetts Oyster project at least had a good attitude about it. “Doesn’t stop the party for us hardy Cape folks,” the nonprofit tweeted.

I’m guessing Rosie O’Donnell really wishes she’d never agreed to go back on “The View. O’Donnell, who left the chat show a second time in February, is now being sued by one of the show’s former senior producers who claims O’Donnell slandered her and got her fired. In the lawsuit, Jennifer ShepardBrookman claims that O’Donnell “accused Ms.

Rachel Bloom makes insanity look good on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld
lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” might be one of the more unusually named programs out there, but star Rachel Bloom says she and creator Aline Brosh McKenna never had any doubts about the title. “It was always ‘Crazy ExGirlfriend.’ It was such a strong title,” Bloom says. “We knew it was a musical, and it was called ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,’ and then we worked back from there.” The result is a show about the titular unbalanced Rebecca, who spontaneously quits her highpowered attorney job in New York after running into her high school boyfriend, who says he lives in West Covina, California. One short cross-country move later, she’s ready for them to fall back in love, and the show explores this concept with the addition of a few well-timed musical numbers that are
Crazy for you
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to attract someone’s attention? “This is going to be a boring answer, but the craziest thing I’ve ever done is lie to myself. I’ve lied in my own diary, my own Internet journal, where it’s like, ‘Dear diary, I went to this restaurant tonight just because, like, I dunno, I was craving Thai food.’ Not even admitting to myself, ‘No, you went to this restaurant so you could see the guy who works at this restaurant, and you’re wearing your low-cut boobie top.’ I think the lying to myself is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever done.”
Rachel Bloom lights up “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” airing Mondays at 8 p.m. on The CW. GETTY IMAGES
Rebecca’s imagination of what the world around her should be. “We’ve been tinkering with how much of a theater fan Rebecca is. But I definitely think theater is where her soul resides,” says Bloom. Rebecca isn’t exactly ready to admit that about herself, however. “I think she’s bottled
it because she’s emotionally stifled. So it’s the type of thing where she has Broadway CDs, and when she’s alone she listens to them, but she wouldn’t tell anybody.” Poor Josh, the guy who dumped her in high school, is in for some big surprises once Rebecca moves to town. “A lot of
the tension in Season 1 is going to be why Rebecca tells herself she’s in West Covina versus why she’s really there,” Bloom says, “and those two things are going to start to knock heads more and more.” The “Crazy” in the title isn’t meant to be taken lightly. Says Bloom, “She’s someone who needs help.
She absolutely does.” While the pilot sees her proudly ditching some meds, that won’t be the end of the issue: “We have a whole episode that we’re planning that we’re going to focus on her depression and her anxiety.” Rebecca isn’t a total mess, though. Those attorney skills will still come
in handy. “She never really got in touch with herself, but she’s really good at her job,” Bloom says. “When she goes to West Covina, she’s going to be good at her job — so much so that she doesn’t even think about it. She’s just like, oh, right, XYZ, I’m going to go stalk Josh now,” says Bloom.
Northern exposure We’re nearing the point where a Minnesota accent is becoming a little intimidating, thanks to the “Fargo” universe. The show is set in the ’70s, with amoral, murderous characters all striving to emerge on top. Jeffrey Donovan, best known for his work on “Burn Notice,” appears as Dodd Gerhardt, one of a group of violent brothers trying to keep their organized crime empire afloat.
Jeffrey Donovan gets tough in Season 2 of “Fargo,” on tonight at 10 p.m. on FX. CHRIS LARGE/FX
How tough is the accent to master? It was one of the hardest I’d ever done. And I played Bobby Kennedy in “J. Edgar.”
Dakota, and Luverne, Minnesota. But I think the tone and the characters are all going to feel like, “Oh yeah, I’m in Fargo.”
How does this season differ from the first one? The biggest difference [is] the literal difference, which is it’s 30 years prior, late ’70s — you know, 1979, after the Vietnam War, when corporate commerce started to take over small businesses. That’s going to show a very specific time in an odd place — Fargo, North
So Dodd will experience that through the lens of his unusual family business. Oh yeah, and it’s a big deal. It’s Dodd’s really demented and damaged view on life that will rebel against big corporate America, and you’ll see as the episodes come how violent that rebellion will be. Oh, it gets bad. It gets
more vicious and bloody than the first season. Uh oh, maybe we shouldn’t get too attached to Dodd. You’ll see. I don’t want to give anything away because it’s really good not to know. Because I think when you’re going to watch the show, you’re like, “Oh no, how did that happen?” There are some sad deaths, where I think the audience will be like, “They can’t die! There’s no way they just died!” LISA WEIDENFELD

HOW TO GET AHEAD
Why failure is important to creativity A new exhibition explores the virtues of messing up. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri
raquel.laneri@metro.us
Whether it’s getting into an Ivy League school, landing a job not too long after graduation, raising a kid or excelling in our career, we often feel the pressure to be the best or, at the very least, not mess up. But such preciousness might be hindering us. In fact, some of the greatest innovators and thinkers (Steve Jobs,
Oprah Winfrey) have extolled the value of failure, saying their proudest achievements often come from mistakes. “There are very few people in the world who come up with great ideas immediately and go and produce them, says Jim Fitts, visiting professor of graphic design at Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass. “I’m not sure anyone can do that. Which is why Fitts and fellow Mount Ida professor Alison Poor-Donahue have organized an exhibition, “Permission to Fail, opening today at the college, partly for their perfectionist students. “It’s so easy to jump on a laptop these days
and start designing, so a lot of younger designers have foregone that old process of blue-sky thinking, doing sketches, doing thumbnails and working through a couple of different concepts before they start to do the final product, Fitts says. The exhibition includes preliminary notes, sketches and photos from 30 artists, including the legendary Milton Glaser, creator the I Heart NY logo, Yet failure isn’t just good for art: It makes all of us sharper thinkers and more agile problemsolvers. “Even Leonardo da Vinci [failed] before making his masterpieces, says Fitts. “And that’s inspiring to anyone.

Sophia Amoruso’s book “#Girlboss” shares the story of how she started her online clothing business, Nastygal.com, and turned it into a $100 million company before she turned 30. Amoruso kicked off the “#Girlboss” paperback release at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in New York City with a conversation with Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief Amy Astley. Here are three things we learned about starting your own business.
Amoruso. “It’s what I did with vintage clothing.” If you really love your job, it will make your business more successful. But make sure you love it for the right reasons, not just because you think it will be popular. “If you’re seeking the limelight, it won’t work,” Amoruso says.
Be ambitious and a team player When hiring someone, Amoruso looks for a person who is willing to work — but not someone who isn’t willing to learn. “They’re ambi-
tious but not entitled,” Amoruso says about qualities she looks for in employees. “If you’re like that, no one will want to be around you.” When you stay organized and on top of your job, you’ll stand out from the crowd.
Earn everything yourself “Working for things is really important,” Amoruso says. The reward will taste so much sweeter when you know you’ve earned everything you’ve worked for yourself, especially if you’ve been reaching for a goal for a long time. “There’s only one first time that you can earn something yourself,” she says. After that, more motivation will come to keep reaching for new goals.

More daily fantasy drama Boston-based DraftKings and the daily fantasy industry are under increased scrutiny. MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
As quickly as the daily fantasy sports industry has exploded in popularity, it could just as quickly disappear. In Week 1 of the 2015 NFL season in September, NFL viewers were bombarded with TV ads from daily sites DraftKings and FanDuel. The barrage hasn’t stopped in the least bit, as during just one NFL game last Sunday, 16 daily fantasy sports commercials were shown. While advertising dollars are a sign, on the surface, of a healthy industry, there is also the possibility that DraftKings and FanDuel are simply scraping up every last dollar before the industry is shut down by the government. “In DraftKings’ and FanDuel’s advertising spending, there’s not a lot of forethought on what’s going to happen two to three years down the road,” said Dr. Scott Jones, a professor of marketing at Stetson University (Florida) and an

expert in Internet commerce and sport marketing. “The spending on advertising is unprecedented. They are outspending beer companies this year. Their approach is to spend as much money to make as much money as quickly as possible. That tells me they might know their days are numbered. The way they’re spending, that alarms me and it tells me they might think it’s over.” Last week, it was reported that the FBI is in-
vestigating Boston-based DraftKings. Then the state of Nevada declared daily fantasy sports to be “gambling” and not a game of “skill,” as DraftKings insisted that it was last year in an article published by Metro. On Sunday, Yahoo! — which has been making its own push in the daily fantasy industry — said it will suspend operations in the state of Florida. “I think the big question now is ‘how many state attorney generals

will jump on this,” Jones told Metro. “It’s a matter of reversing precedent [for the AGs]. For the daily fantasy companies, they’re spending a lot of
money on lobbyists right now too.” The old-school gambling guard — the casinos in Nevada and representatives like Frank Pallone in New Jersey (who called for a Congressional hearing on daily fantasy but pushed for legalized sports betting in Atlantic City) — clearly do not want DraftKings and FanDuel to succeed. “The old-school gamblers, they’re accustomed to dealing with [betting] lines. The millennials —
they love control, first and foremost. Fantasy is a completely different animal than old-school gambling,” Jones said. “Fantasy players aren’t being told by the casino’s, ‘OK, here’s the line.’” The NFL itself clearly wants DraftKings and FanDuel to continue their operations. ESPN reported last week that the league has been working “behind the scenes” to prevent a congressional hearing on daily fantasy. “The 2006 Internet Gambling law put the kibosh on online poker sites, and the popularity of that ended quickly,” Jones said. “You’re going to have attorney generals asking, ‘Why don’t we have a law that covers this?’ in the next few months. So for DraftKings and FanDuel, the rug could be pulled out from underneath them very quickly.” Jones added that if the major daily fantasy sites do become outlawed in the U.S. that it is completely possible that the sites could pop up as “off-shore” sites rather quickly. “There’s still plenty of poker sites, they’re just not as popular. If people want to gamble their money that way, they can do it,” Jones said. “But the business model for daily fantasy could just be challenged dramatically.”
