Vladimir Putin used a rare visit to Moscow by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to talk up the Kremlin’s potential to help broker a political settlement to the crisis as he tried to show the West Russia has become a major player in the Middle East. Assad flew to Moscow to thank Putin personally for his military support, in a surprise visit that Russian state media cast as a diplomatic coup. It was Assad’s first foreign visit since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011. REUTERS

Viral open letter puts professor in spotlight After a suspicious neighbor called police on a local photographer, a Cambridge prof’s response became a mini-sensation. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

A college professor’s open letter to a suspicious neighbor was a mini sensation online this week. In the message, published in the Cambridge Chronicle, David Updike addressed a woman who called police when she saw him carrying a camera in Dana Square Park near his home in September. She reportedly suspected he was taking pictures of children. He wasn’t. But as a result, six offi-

cers confronted the neighborhood resident of 30 years, questioned him for 20 minutes and searched his phone for incriminating images, according to Updike’s account. It was humiliating, he said. “Suggestion: The next time you suspect someone is up to no good, perhaps you should say hello,” Updike wrote. “That’s what people do in a neighborhood park: talk to each other.” Updike, an English professor at Roxbury Community College and children’s book author, is also the son of famed American writer John Updike. His appeal to the anonymous tipster quickly generated scores of comments on the paper’s website. On Reddit, there were more than 200 more, plus 1,000 “upvotes.” The conversation

“You’re sort of taken aback and you sort of just say, ‘Sure, here’s my phone.’” Wunsch

among commenters from several cities was largely about knowing your rights about handing over devices to police. Reached by phone this week, Updike said that was never his intent, and that he never expected so many people would want to weigh in. “I’m such a Luddite I forgot about the whole Internet thing. I thought this was just going to be a short letter in the paper,” he told Metro. “My hope was just that she would

either read the letter or find out about it and just be more prudent in the future when she’s calling the police.” Both Updike and Cambridge police said they had productive talks since the incident. Updike said he was satisfied with how it was handled and wouldn’t pursue legal action. An internal review found the involved officers acted appropriately, CPD spokesman Jeremy Warnick said, adding that officers receive training on camera-related issues. He said such a large group of officers confronted Updike only because they all happened to be in the area at the same time. In general, though, the challenge for many photographers is that they are frequently confronted by police or suspicious bystanders, but often don’t

know their rights, said Sarah Wunsch, deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts. For example, you’re allowed to refuse to let officers search through your phone or camera without a warrant, she said, but under pressure not everyone does. “Under those circumstances, you’re sort of taken aback and you sort of just say, ‘Sure, here’s my phone,’” she said. Updike told Metro he gave police consent to look through his flip phone, but also said he

just wanted the ordeal of being surrounded by police — he said in his letter he felt “humiliation and degradation” — to be over. Although it was “embarrassing” for Updike, the case shouldn’t discourage people from alerting authorities if someone is acting suspiciously around kids, said Nancy McBride of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. “I’m not in any way condemning the person who called the police,” she said. “She was following her instincts.”

MSPCA pushing to ban ivory sales Sales of new ivory have been illegal since 1990, but determining the age is complicated. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

nate.homan@metro.us

The MSPCA is pushing Massachusetts lawmakers to join New Jersey, New York and California in banning the sale of elephant ivory and rhino horns. “Never has the timing been more urgent,” MSPCA spokesman Rob Halpin said. “Massachusetts plays a key role in the demand for illegal ivory and the destruction of elephant and rhino populations across Africa.” New Jersey became the first state in the nation to ban ivory sales last August. According to the MSPCA, at least 100,000 African ele-

phants have been killed for their tusks. House Bill 1275, introduced by Sen. Jason Lewis and Rep. Lori Ehrlich, would ban the sale of ivory and rhino horn in Massachusetts, a critical step in the fight to save these animals from extinction. Ninety-six

Massachusetts legislators have signed on as co-sponsors. “African elephants and rhinos are being killed at an unprecedented rate as demand grows for their tusks and horns,” Halpin said in a statement. “Between 2010 and 2012, 100,000

elephants were killed for their ivory, representing the worst mass slaughter of elephants since the international ivory trade was banned in 1989.” It might be hard to believe, but Boston ranks fourth on the list of cities with the most

ivory sales in the United States, according to a report from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Many antique shops in the Bay State won’t sell ivory products, but a quick search on Craigslist yields plenty of ivory items for sale, Haplin said. “This bill would clamp down on illegal ivory and rhino horn material. Federal ban from 1990 saying all ivory sold prior is legal,” Haplin said. “However, it’s extremely difficult to distinguish old and new ivory. “The bill doesn’t punish people from possessing and inheriting ivory, but it can’t be sold for profit. Craigslist is a vehicle of ivory trade, but one obviously can’t be sure if it is real ivory, or if it’s pre- or post-1990 ivory. There is a black market for ivory. All ivory is suspect at this point.” Web-based retailers like eBay and Etsy pro-

hibit ivory sales. The bill would not criminalize possession of elephant ivory already owned by state residents or prohibit inheritance or noncommercial gifts. It would, however, ban the sale of legally possessed ivory, a provision that has drawn concern from musician groups. Kathleen Bitetti, cofounder of the Massachusetts Artists Leaders Coalition, told the State House News Service her group hopes to avoid unintended consequences, like banning musicians from reselling their instruments that contain ivory. “A lot of musicians have put their life savings into their instruments, and that’s their retirement,” Bitetti said. Halpin said that there are roughly 28,000 rhinos left, and their population has been reduced to a point where they can’t reproduce to sustain their numbers.

Third suspect charged in Forest Hills Station shooting A third person has been charged in connection to a shooting outside of Forest Hills Station on Friday morning during the rush-hour commute. Robert Acosta, 18, was arraigned on Tuesday in West Roxbury Court. Keisean Parker, 18, of Roxbury and Kevasia Lowe, 18, of Mattapan, were arraigned Monday. Prosecutors said Parker got into an argument with several people on a bus before the alleged shooting. The flap spilled out onto the street after the bus pulled into Forest Hills Station at about 8 a.m., prosecutors said. Parker allegedly pulled out a gun, opened fire and fled toward Asticou Road and Washington Street. A second man returned fire.

There were no reports of injuries. Lowe allegedly threatened one victim with a Taser device during the altercation, prosecutors said. Boston and Transit police officers interviewed witnesses and victims and found spent shell casings in the area where the shots were fired. Police detained Parker and Lowe not far from the scene, and a witness positively identified Parker as the gunman. A gun and a Taser were found in Lowe’s backpack upon arrest, prosecutors said. Acosta was later identified through camera footage. Parker and Lowe were ordered held on $15,000 bail Monday. Acosta’s bail was set at $25,000. The three are due back in court Nov. 12. METRO

The official pumpkin of Boston, center, weighing in at 1,020 pounds, went on display at the Boston Public Market on Wednesday.

“Boston’s official pumpkin” made its triumphant journey to the city on Wednesday. Now, what to call this massive blob of a vegetable? Visitors to the Boston Public Market, the new indoor produce and artisanal eats destination in Haymarket Square, were invited to contribute some ideas. Votes were being collected at the info

booth. Whoever’s name idea is chosen takes home a BPM tote bag, a sign said. A veritable Goliath of gourds, the as-yetunnamed pumpkin from Red Apple Farm in Phillipston weighed in at 1,020 pounds — enough guts to make more than 400 pumpkin pies — and was the biggest of four gargantuan orbs of seedy

goop delivered to the market this week. They plan was to keep them there all season long. Want to know how many seeds fit in a 1,020 pound pumpkin? 975,000. To celebrate the season, BPM planned to host a cooking-with-pumpkin demonstration from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Then on Sunday, look for the BPM pumpkin

Ryan, right wing spar over speakership as deadlines loom Ryan has said he will seek the top House job but only under certain conditions, including receiving the endorsements of conservative factions. Paul Ryan tried to win over hard-line conservatives on Wednesday in his bid to become the next speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives as fellow Republicans quarreled over how to avoid a historic default on Washington’s soaring government debt. Coming within days if Congress fails to act, a default could shake the markets and the economy, but the Republicancontrolled Congress had

no clear plan to prevent it, and was consumed by an intra-party power struggle expected to extend into next week. The nine-term congressman spent much of Wednesday in private meetings with these factions to try to nail down their support. He was scheduled to hold a crucial meeting in the late afternoon with the rightwing Freedom Caucus, a

small but vocal splinter group of about 40 of the House’s 247 Republican members. If enough Freedom Caucus members withhold their support, Ryan might walk away from the race to replace Speaker John Boehner, who is slated to retire on Oct. 30. Boehner has set Oct. 28 for Republicans to pick a nominee and Oct. 29 for the full House to vote for a new speaker. The leadership struggle has dragged on since Boehner’s surprise retirement announcement in late September, even as a Nov. 3 deadline approached for Congress to act on the federal debt limit and a Dec. 11 deadline drew near for enacting new funding to keep federal agencies operating. Work on logistics system may delay Air Force F-35 fielding Final development and testing of a Lockheed Martin Corp. computerbased logistics system for the F-35 fighter jet may be delayed by 30 to 60 days, which could impede the U.S. Air Force’s ability to declare its jets ready for combat by Aug. 1, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. Air Force Lieutenant General Chris Bogdan, who runs the $391 billion F-35 program for the Pentagon, said his office was “closely tracking” for the target date of Aug. 1, 2016, but he said there were “a number of risks” that needed to be addressed to meet the goal. Chief among those risks, he said, was completion of development and testing of the next version of the Autonomic

The company is due to complete ALIS 2.0.2 in November, paving the way for initial testing in January and formal system security testing in May, Bogdan told the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. “There is schedule pressure that we are monitoring very closely and attempting to mitigate” to meet the Air Force’s target date of Aug. 1 to declare an initial squadron of 12 F-35s ready for combat use,” he said. BRIEF Rockets fired by Houthis kill 14 civilians in Yemen Fourteen civilians were killed in one of Yemen’s largest cities on Wednesday when shells fired by Houthi fighters and their allies, forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, fell on their neighborhoods, medical sources said. The sources said the shells also wounded some 70 people in the neighborhoods of Tahrir and Daboua in the city of Taiz, in southwestern Yemen. The Iran-allied Houthis and Saleh’s forces are battling a Saudi-led coalition which is trying to restore the government of Yemen’s current president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which is now based in the southern Yemeni port of Aden. Taiz, one of the largest cities in Yemen, has for weeks been a

main battleground between the two sides and the fighting has caused significant casualties and forced thousands to flee. Houthi officials were not immediately available to comment. At least 5,400 people have been killed in the fighting in Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, since March. The United Nations says the humanitarian situation, exacerbated by a Saudi blockade of Yemen’s ports, is “critical.” Airstrikes by the Arab coalition have struck civilian targets on at least four different occasions in recent weeks, including a wedding party in the Red Sea village of Al-Wahijah on Sept. 28 that killed 131 people, drawing strong condemnation from U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. REUTERS

Bad weather, border closures add to plight of migrants in Balkans On the CroatianSerbian border, thousands of migrants spent the night camped out at the BerkasovoBapska crossing after Croatia closed the gates. Secretary of State Kerry to meet Israel’s Netanyahu in Berlin U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin on Thursday at the outset of a trip aimed at finding ways to ease the violence between Israelis and Palestinians, the State Department said on Wednesday. State Department spokesman John Kirby said Kerry would be looking for practical ways to end the recent surge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians, and he reiterated that Kerry wanted to see both sides moving away from rhetoric and actions that incite violence. Kirby’s comments came just hours after Netanyahu provoked a

Holocaust controversy on Wednesday by saying that Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Muslim elder in Jerusalem during the 1940s, convinced Adolf Hitler to exterminate the Jews.

Opposition politicians and Holocaust experts criticized the remarks and accused Netanyahu of distorting the historical record. A German government spokesman said the Ho-

locaust was Germany’s responsibility and there was no need for another view on it. Kirby declined to characterize Netanyahu’s comments as potentially inciting, but he said scholarly evidence on the Holocaust does not support the prime minister’s view. Kirby said Kerry also would meet with German and EU officials while in Berlin before traveling on Friday to Vienna for talks on the ongoing conflict in Syria with his Russian, Turkish and Saudi counterparts. Over the weekend, Kerry will visit Jordan and Saudi Arabia for further discussions with regional leaders, Kirby said. REUTERS

BRIEF St. Louis County plans new rules for dozens of police forces The executive of St. Louis County proposed new rules for police Wednesday in the 57 towns and cities in Missouri’s largest metropolitan area in the wake of complaints of racial profiling and unfair fines and fees. The proposals come weeks after a federal report found that abusive policing had strained relations between minorities and

Teen describes fatal beating at upstate New York church Sarah Ferguson, the teen’s half-sister, is charged in the beating. She is being held at Oneida County Jail in lieu of $50K bail. An upstate New York teenager told a court Wednesday that members of his family and others struck him in the genitals and on other parts of his body during in a brutal attack at a secretive upstate church that killed his older brother. The testimony by Christopher Leonard, 17, was the first public description of last week’s attack by the teenager, who was recently released from a hospital where he was treated for blunt force injuries to most of his body. Leonard and his brother Lucas, 19, were beaten during a counseling session at the Word of Life Church in Chadwicks, New York, about 50 miles east of Syracuse, authorities said. The alleged assault, which began late Oct. 11 in the church’s “sanctuary room” and lasted more than 10 hours, was

initiated because Lucas Leonard wanted to leave the congregation, District Attorney Scott McNamara said. The teenager’s testimony came during a hearing for his half-sister Sarah Ferguson, 33, in New Hartford Town Court. He spoke quietly in court and kept his head down while answering questions from attorneys. He said the church’s pastor, Tiffany Irwin, organized the counseling session and asked the boys questions. He did not elaborate on the nature of the questions. Initially, the brothers answered the questions willingly but when they began to resist, the meeting turned violent, he said. The teenagers’ parents, Bruce Leonard, 65, and Deborah Leonard, 59, have been charged with first-degree manslaughter in the death of Lucas Leonard. They are being held at Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail. Parishioners Joseph Irwin, 26, Linda Morey, 54, and David Morey, 26, are also charged with second-degree assault in connection with Christopher Leonard’s beating. REUTERS

the mostly white St. Louis County Police Department and made more than 100 recommendations for changes. St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said in a statement he would present the bill to the county council Tuesday and the new standards would go into effect within six months for police in dozen of municipalities. The rules would bring officer recruiting and training and useof-force policies in line with basic

standards. Such rules are already in place at the St. Louis County Police Department, county officials said. The police killing of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed African-American, in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson in August 2014 triggered a national movement over policing and race. The fatal shooting by a white police officer was found to be justified. The Department of Justice studied the St. Louis County Police

Department and recommended it address minority underrepresentation; enhance training, with a focus on fair and impartial policing and community engagement; reduce use of force; and work to ensure racial profiling does not occur. Residents of two St. Louis suburbs have sued city governments claiming officials have abused and exploited impoverished people through onerous traffic fines and court fees. REUTERS

Nothing saves a marriage like a coma Crisis and tragedy can really help put things in perspective. Like when you’re in the midst of getting a divorce but then your soonto-be ex-husband lands in the hospital after a four-day bender at a Nevada brothel and you think maybe you two can go the distance after all. At least, that’s what I imagine is going through Khloe Kardashian’s mind this week, as according to TMZ she and Lamar Odom asked a judge to dismiss their divorce case — and it totally worked. Kardashian’s lawyer reportedly appeared in court Wednesday with a document signed by both parties asking for the filing to be withdrawn. While Odom continues to make an impressive recovery following his four-day coma, their 2-yearold divorce battle “is now dead,” a source says. I see what they did there. And hey, it’s nice to hear Odom has progressed to “able to sign important legal documents” condition so fast.

In praise of the ahead-of-its-time ‘Dragonriders of Pern’

Anne McCaffrey’s “Dragonriders of Pern” is the latest fantasy being turned into a movie.

Last night, I decided to once again reread the “Dragonriders of Pern” series of books by Anne McCaffrey. The first one, “Dragonflight,” was written in 1968. In a nutshell, it’s about a medieval sort of society that faces the threat of “thread” — organicmatter-eating spores that fall from the sky. Some of the inhabitants ride dragons to flame it out of the sky. So why are these old books important? The series, written by a woman who was one of the few writing science fiction back then (or at least one of the few to get published), has a female lead unlike almost any out there at the time. Her name is Lessa, and she’s brought in by the dragon rider F’lar to “impress” the one egg-laying dragon left on Pern. But Lessa’s stuck in a society that fails to recognize the value of women. She, however, recognizes her own selfworth and power, and it ends up changing the world. What the books did so well was show the society changing, which it was very much doing back in 1968.

There were troubling passages in the early books about what was expected of women, but that changed as the series evolved and Pernese society with it. Even in the beginning, in the Weyrs, where the dragons and riders lived, sexuality was a comfortable thing. No one was too weirded out by women sleeping with more than one man in her life, or by homosexuality. No one was expected to breed until they were worn out or dead. Once Lessa took over, things started to change for women all over Pern. By the end of the series, Pern was a society that reflects what we see today. Reading this series, I grew up having no issues with sexuality. I grew up thinking women could do whatever they wanted, even when faced with a bunch of men in power who didn’t. The things that make me uncomfortable now are at the beginning of the series, but things changed as the society did. I say this all because the newer books I’ve been reading — notably the “Star Wars” series,

with an absolute 50/50 split between men and women in all aspects of society — are the ones young fans will read the way I read the “Pern” series. They’ll see women in power in fiction at a much younger age than I did. They’ll see themselves. I found these books where a women triumphs and society changes when there were very few like them. Now they’re everywhere, and that can only mean good things.

Bad teacher

You’ve now got some direct experience in making indie film. What does it take now to actually get something made?

Olivia Wilde struggles in “Meadowland.” CINEDIGM ENTERTAINMENT

Olivia Wilde sells tragedy and remorse in “Meadowland.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

With “Meadowland,” Olivia Wilde pulls double duty as both lead actress — playing opposite Luke Wilson as parents facing the fallout of unimaginable loss — and producer. Wilde worked closely with cinematographerturned-director Reed Moreno on bringing the indie drama to life.

How do you psych yourself up for taking on a role that’s so raw and unpleasant? I had quite a long time to prepare because there was a long, challenging process of putting this film together that allowed me to work on the character of Sarah for more than a year. That was a gift because by the time we got to set, I was prepared to dive right into the depths of her experience. I was just warmed up, which is something that you don’t usually have the chance to do as an actor. Casting can happen quite quickly, productions move very

fast, and we don’t always have a lot of time to prepare. But in this one, I was warmed up and ready. Have you ever had that much prep time before? No, never. I think the role of producer on this film also allowed my performance to reach another level because I felt a responsibility to this character and to this production. It’s a lot of pressure but also it’s a kind of shove into your greatest work because you know that you’re lucky to have a day of production. After you produce something, you understand how diffi-

cult it is to put something together. It’s a miracle that any movie gets made. Sarah is a teacher, a job where you’re expected to have your s— together. Sarah is a terrible teacher. That’s a choice we made — that Sarah would not be a great teacher because she’s not able to connect. She’s hollow. Do you think she was a good teacher before? I don’t think she was ever a great teacher. I don’t think she ever wanted to be a teacher. She’s not going to last long in that job. I don’t think she goes back after the film ends.

I think what needs to happen is more independent financing companies need to be started by people who are really excited to champion new filmmakers and who enjoy facilitating those projects without necessarily wanting them to fit any sort of template that they’ve seen before that has been successful. I think the most interesting work is made by people who aren’t trying to copy anything that’s been made before. We need more financiers that are interested in that, in supporting filmmakers in whatever they want to do. It’s a risky investment, but it’s incredibly important to society, I would argue. So that’s what needs to happen for

independent film. It’s all about financiers taking risks and allowing filmmakers to have the power.

Besides opening for AC/DC’s mega-stadium tours in Europe and North America, and playing the Glastonbury Festival in England, primitive soul band Vintage Trouble released their major label debut, “1 Hopeful Rd.” in August on legendary label Blue Note Records. But none of this could be called an overnight success: “1 Hopeful Rd.,” the Los Angeles band’s second album, is the result of years of honing individual craftsmanship and songwriting, and it unites older and brand new songs. “The record is a combination of songs we’ve written from three years ago to three months ago,” says Ty Taylor, Vintage Trouble’s powerhouse vocalist. “It was nice to have songs come at the eleventh hour, so we have something representative of where we are now,” he says of wrapping the recording sessions with producer and veteran musician Don Was, who is also the CEO of Blue Note Records.

going out There really is a Hopeful Road The second album’s upbeat title is a play on a lyric from the album’s opening song, “Run Like the River.” “The first line is ‘One hopeful road that my mother showed me.’ In the song, it’s a regular sentence; then when we were looking at album titles, we thought it would be cool to change it to an actual address — so

we put in the number one and changed it to a road,” Taylor says. “But it turns out there is an actual Hopeful Road in Alabama — so I hope those people aren’t hating us if people are camping out in front of their house,” he jokes.

Vintage Trouble hit the road for Glastonbury and AC/DC This fall, Vintage Trouble is headlining shows

across the U.S., which sees them playing cozier stages rather than the stadiums packed with 150,000 AC/DC fans. The rush of that tour almost equaled the thrill of playing the U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival, but that was pretty special. Vintage Trouble was set to play Glastonbury last year too, but their performance was hobbled after a lightning strike on another stage shut down the event. “We hadn’t played even one song. It was

shut down for 45 minutes,” says Taylor, “which meant we would have missed our slot completely. There was no electricity, so we jumped up on the front monitors and started playing acoustically. People went nuts. The organizers gave us a major slot this year because of that, and half the field said they were there from the year before. Oddly enough, it felt like a hometown show. It was the wildest thing ever.”

Plan to make the walk at night, when the waterfalls are illuminated by colored spotlights. Ponchos and slip-resistant shoes are provided, because getting very wet is part of the package.

Aquatic denizens from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean swim at the aquarium. A circulating trolley stops at all attractions, including the Top of the Falls Restaurant where diners enjoy their meal with a view of — what else? — the waterfalls. The trolley fee allows unlimited on-off access. There’s a comprehensive admission pass that includes most of the attractions. The Maid of the Mist will operate through early November but requires a separate ticket. Were it not for Fort Niagara (Oldfortniagara.org), the falls might not be an international border, and we’d be singing “God Save the Queen.” The self-guided audio tour explains how Native American, French, British and American interests played out in the remote wilderness. There are daily reenactments, including hourly musket firing demonstrations. A more colorful and lighthearted history is found at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum (Carrouselmuseum.org). It’s a museum you can ride, with two vintage carousels, plus a band organ, a kiddie-size carousel and a collection of hand-carved

animals. Most of the Niagara region’s wineries are small, with limited distribution. The Niagara Wine Trail Vino Visa ($40; Niagarawinetrail. org) includes tastings at 22 wineries. If you want to imbibe without driving, Niagara Wine Tour Guides and Grape and Wine Tours are both worth checking. Foodies should check out the three-hour walking tour of Niagara’s Italian-Canadian food traditions (Niagaraculinarytours. com). Guided by a local historian and former stand-up comic, Niagara Walking Tours (Niagarawalkingtours.com) are highly rated and combine history with humor. Groups are generally six people and never more than 12. Reservations required. For other ideas and suggestions for lodging and dining, visit Niagara-usa.com. INSIGHT GUIDES | FRAN SEVERN

The Observation Tower overlooks both the U.S. and Canadian falls for good photo ops. The Visitor Center is filled with interactive displays, while the Discovery Center has hands-on exhibits, a climbing wall and a 180-degree theater featuring a film of Niagara’s 12,000-year history.

RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE The zero-RB truthers have their chests puffed out again. For the third straight year, more than half of the running backs selected in the first two rounds are hurting their owners. In 2014, it was LeSean McCoy, Montee Ball, Gio Bernard and Arian Foster. In 2013, Doug Martin, Foster, Ray Rice, C.J. Spiller, Trent Richardson and Steven Jackson all tanked. Is it over for this year’s group and the prioritization of the position as a whole?

ADAM LEVITAN FANTASY SPORTS Adam Levitan is a Fantasy Sports columnist for Metro US. He is also a DraftKings analyst and co-host of The Daily Fantasy Football Edge podcast. @AdamLevitan

A shift in the game For those not living in our pathetic little fantasy football bubble, “zero-RB” refers to a drafting strategy in which you purposefully avoid running backs in the first four rounds or so. It’s growing more and more viable every year. The vast majority of NFL teams run some kind of committee now and running backs have the highest injury rates in the league. Meanwhile, all of the NFL’s recent rule changes skew toward inflated passing stats. Philip Rivers is on pace to set the record for passing yards in a season, DeAndre Hopkins is going to smash the mark for targets and a whopping six wideouts

are averaging at least 100 yards per game.

Don’t be shy about sitting Eddie Lacy until there’s signs of improvement. GETTY IMAGES

The 2015 bust group Owners of Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy, Marshawn Lynch, C.J. Anderson and Jeremy Hill are already well behind the eight-ball. There’s varying degrees of hope here. Obviously, Charles owners got unlucky with the ACL tear. But owners of Lacy, Anderson, Hill and Lynch shouldn’t be afraid to sit their “studs” down. Lacy is clearly out of shape and is getting outplayed by James Starks, Lynch’s offensive

line is a disaster, Anderson has been passed by Ronnie Hillman and Jeremy Hill looks like a shell of his rookie-year self. There are complementary wideouts and passing backs that have higher weekly ceilings right now.

Sneaky stashes at RB One key to the zero-RB theory is to take cheap upside shots at the position. For example, hoarding Christine Michael on your bench

Week 7 studs Some top adds ahead of NFL Week 7: Christine Michael, RB, Cowboys — Has been ahead of Joseph Randle at practice. Stefon Diggs, WR, Vikings — Has surpassed the disappointing Charles Johnson. Brandon LaFell, WR, Patriots — Will quickly take back an every-down outside role.

ever since the Dallas trade, or stashing Todd Gurley through the injury. Some deep sleeper running backs that could emerge later include Buck Allen, David Cobb, Ahmad Bradshaw and Knile Davis. They’re available in most leagues but are just one injury away from big roles.

NFL news Melvin Gordon’s rookie year has been one to forget. The 15th overall pick

is averaging 3.83 YPC, has scored zero touchdowns, ranks 42nd of 55 in PFF’s run grades and was benched in Week 6 after fumbling for the fourth time. Part of the trouble stems from offensive line injuries, but Gordon has to take blame for indecision at the line and ball security. He’s best left on fantasy benches until he puts something in the box score and gains the trust of his team back. Meanwhile, the run game’s ineffectiveness has Philip Rivers on a record pace.

NHL power rankings | by Rich Slate

NBA Celtics, Rozier eager for season to start A week from today, the Celtics will have already had a regular season game under their belts as they’re set to host the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 28. The C’s host the Knicks at the Garden tonight and will play the Sixers in Manchester, New Hampshire, Friday as they wrap up their preseason slate. Boston is 4-1, having beaten international teams Olimpia Milano (124-91), Real Madrid (111-96) and the Brooklyn Nets twice (109-105, 111-105). The C’s lost to the Knicks at MSG last Friday, 101-95. Scoring has not been an issue for the C’s this preseason, and much like last season, Boston is relying on a “scorer-by-committee” approach. Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Amir Johnson and Terry Rozier have each led the C’s in scoring in different games. Rozier, a rookie, was one of the players’ named in the Louisville basketball sex scandal, in which a former Cardinals assistant held sex parties for basketball recruits. “I was already committed before I took my visit,” Rozier told ESPN. “I will say though, Coach P [Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino) … I can say his nose is clean.” MATT BURKE

Canadiens (7-0)

Lightning (4-2-1)

Jets (4-2)

Wild (3-1-1)

This might be the easiest top choice in the history of power rankings. Not only is Montreal off to its best start in franchise history but it is already sporting a ridiculous plus-16 goal-differential. The Habs have only allowed seven goals.

In terms of quality opponents, Tampa Bay might currently be on the toughest road trip of the season in the NHL. After Tuesday’s loss in Nashville, the Lightning head to Winnipeg, Chicago and St. Louis. They come home for two games at the end of October.

After a busy stretch to start this campaign, the Jets have been off since Sunday (a 4-2 loss to St. Louis) and don’t play again until Friday vs. Tampa Bay. Winnipeg has scored 20 goals, the second most in the West behind the Stars and Blues.

The Wild have dropped back-to-back games against two of the most desperate teams in the NHL (Kings and Ducks). They host the Blue Jackets on Thursday at Xcel Energy Center, it goes without saying that no club wants to be the first to lose to Columbus this season.

Stars (5-1)

Islanders (4-1-1)

Blues (5-2)

Sharks (4-2)

Panthers (3-2-1)

Nobody expected this and for good reason, it is probably fool’s gold. Still, the Stars are playing really well to begin this season. They have reeled off four straight victories after a 2-1 win at Philadelphia on Tuesday and they are the top team in the Western Conference.

Other than the Canadiens, the Islanders are the hottest team in the Eastern Conference. New York has won four straight games. Since they are two of the best teams in the East, the Islanders-Rangers rivalry should reach another level of excitement and intensity this season.

If they were in any other division, the Blues would likely be one of the best teams (at least recordwise) in the league. Instead, they will probably be one of six teams in the Central just battling for a playoff spot. St. Louis hasn’t been home since Opening Night.

To nobody’s surprise, the Sharks have come back down to Earth after their 4-0-0 start. Thursday vs. the Kings at SAP Center is a sneaky big game since LA has regained a bit of its form after a terrible beginning to the season. The good news is that it’s still very early.

The Panthers fell 3-2 in overtime at the Penguins on Tuesday but they still look pretty good. They will be tested some more this week at Chicago and Dallas. They have only allowed 12 goals this season as goaltender Roberto Luongo continues to play well at age 36.

No. 8

No. 11

No. 20

Predators (5-1)

Rangers (4-2-1)

Capitals (4-1)

Canucks (3-1-2)

Bruins (2-3)

Right now, the three best teams in the West all reside in the Central. The Stars, Predators and Blues each have 10 points. Nashville is 3-0-0 at Bridgestone Arena thanks to an entertaining 5-4 shootout win over the Lightning on Tuesday.

New York picked up its best win of the young season on Monday, blanking San Jose, 4-0, at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers have a relatively easy stretch coming up: vs. Coyotes, at Flyers, vs. Flames and vs. Maple Leafs.

The Capitals are rolling, they have won three straight games including a 6-2 win at Calgary on Tuesday that led the Flames to put goaltender Karri Ramo on waivers. Washington wraps up its trip to Canada with two more games this week.

Much like the Sharks, this is more of the reality when it comes to the Canucks this season. Losing 2-1 Sunday in overtime to the Oilers was a sobering moment for Vancouver. They have Washington, Detroit and Montreal at home coming up.

The Bruins appeased the angry mobs for at least a few days with wins at Colorado and at Arizona. After the Flyers at home Wednesday, Friday at Barclays Center vs. the Islanders should be an intriguing test.
