More trains in 2016: MTA The agency said it is spending $5.8 million to add 34 subway round-trips every day — but you have to wait until next June. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Riders on some of the city’s busiest subway lines might be getting a bit of relief in the form of more trains, but not until June 2016. The MTA is spending $5.8 million to add 34 daily round-trips on 12 lines in the city. The additional service will be added on the 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, A, E, J, M, N and S trains is an effort to address the surge in ridership, which rose to an average of 5.6 million daily riders in 2014 and is expected to be higher in 2015. The increase is in the 2016 budget, the MTA said.

The Shuttle The most significant increase in service will be the 42nd Street shuttle during the evening. The number of trains will double to 24 between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. for a five-minute wait time, the MTA said.

Lexington Line The MTA’s busiest line, the 4, 5 and 6 trains,

will get seven more evening round-trip trains.

Eighth Avenue Line An additional three C train round trips are planned for Sundays. The 1 and 2 lines will get a total of five more peak and evening hour trips; the A, C and E trains will see three additional midday and evening trains, and three additional Sunday morning trips. “Our subway system is more than a century old and even where we are aided by new technology, we are still limited by the overall age and condition of the system and the maintenance that is needed to run trains safely. Making these service changes wherever we can lets us make the best use of existing resources as we expand to keep up with private sector development,” said James L. Ferrara, interim president of NYC Transit. Gene Russianoff, senior attorney of the Straphangers Campaign, told Metro the increase in round-trips is “triage” dictated by MTA rules to provide additional service based on the agency’s loading and policy guidelines. “They’re mandating their own rules and regulations,” Russianoff said. “It’s not really major; no one will really notice them, a five-minute reduction. I wish it were enough.”

No way of knowing how many illegal ‘dollar vans’ in NYC A series of proposed bills by city council members aim to enable legal commuter vans while punishing persistent offenders. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

chester.soria@metro.us

There’s no way of knowing exactly how many illegal commuter vans operate in New York City, a city official told lawmakers Thursday. Taxi and Limousine Commission Chair Meera

Joshi told City Council members on Thursday that there were some 585 authorized commuter vans operating throughout the city, though the agency wasn’t sure how many were operating illegally. “It’s safe to say it’s probably — I don’t think equal — but not far off from equal,” Joshi said. Problems with policing illegal vans have been compounded for the agency since a federal judge declared on Oct. 1 that the TLC’s car seizure policy was unconstitutional.

To date, Joshi said the TLC seized 274 vehicles before the judge’s decision. Last year, the agency seized 516 vehicles. The council members mulled over a trio of bills

Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams, who introduced the bill to legitimize more van operators, described his intent as helping get more drivers “out of the shadows.” The two other bills would require the TLC to study commuter vans, thereby freezing any new licenses, and increase penalties on any violations. including eliminating a minimum fine out of concern that judges would reduce them to negligible amounts. However, Joshi still praised commuter vans as a small but necessary form of transportation

for working-class New Yorkers in parts of town that might not have consistent and fast access between two neighborhoods. “Commuter vans have filled that gap … admirably,” she said.

The board said it would announce a design competition that would include the terminal’s relocation one block west. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

New York City is getting its new bus terminal — by about 2030 at the earliest. The board at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey unanimously approved a $10 billion plan to replace the existing 65-year-old structure at Eighth Avenue between 40th and 42nd streets. The vote on Thursday approved a series of changes, including the fact that the new terminal would likely be built one block west, between Ninth and 10th avenues.

Port Authority Bus Terminal GETTY IMAGES

The existing terminal, which more than 200,000 commuters use every day, would remain in operation until the new structure is complete. There’s still plenty to be worked out, including the new terminal’s design. The board agreed to launch a design competition that would also incorporate connections to existing transfer points. The proposal beat out earlier suggestions, including one to relocate

the terminal to New Jersey. In May, the board also unanimously approved a $3.6 billion plan to redevelop La Guardia Airport, using a public-private partnership to defray costs for taxpayers. Gov. Andrew Cuomo previously said the airport’s renovation would be completely rebuilt by 2021. Last year, Vice President Joe Biden referred to La Guardia as something from “a third world country.”

While the opportunity to advertise during the game may be attractive to global brands, it is less so for U.S. brands because the game is early for West Coast viewers, and fans in the game’s local markets will be able to view it on television on CBS affiliates, the sources told Reuters. Riot grrrls “Jem and the Holograms” is the latest in a long line of films about all-female bands. Here are seven of the best. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri

raquel.laneri@metro.us

On Friday, “Jem and the Holograms” — about suburban teen YouTube sensations turned pinkhaired pop stars — opens in theaters. Though rumor has it the movie bears little resemblance to the truly outrageous 1980s cult cartoon series that inspired it, “Jem” does have a few things going for it: Ziggy Stardust-worthy makeup (on fleek), Juliette Lewis as an evil music manager and — most important — girls, rocking out. Rock ’n’ roll has long been a symbol of rebellion, but it’s particularly subversive when played by women. Think of 1970s feminist punk trio The Slits, who were thrown out of more hotels and more feared than any of their male contemporaries, or on the pop spectrum, Madonna and Miley Cyrus, who have both inspired hand-wringing about the downfall of moral society. He didn’t take the job lightly. First off, I should ask about Vin Diesel. He seems like he might not be as intimidating as his screen image. He’s many things. He’s lovely. He’s friendly to everybody. He’s got a big personality. He’s also kind of not intimidating. I think people would think he’s intimidating. He sort of isn’t. He’s a softie. He’s also a big D&D fan, and he’s

Wood plays a priest tapped with aiding a fearsome assassin (Vin Diesel) in “The Last Witch Hunter.” SCOTT GARFIELD

a big Tolkien nerd and a fantasy fan. In a lot of ways, this character is closer to him than anything he’s done in the past. That’s cool to know there’s this side to him that doesn’t get expressed much in cinema. But it’s a big part of who he is. What convinced you this was a worthy return to big-budget genre fare? It’s weird to even say this, because it wasn’t the case 20 years ago,

but it was interesting to read something that was not based on a preexisting source or was a sequel. It’s bizarre that we have to say one of a film’s merits is that it’s original. F—ing strange. But it is the case. So it was interesting to me that something was going to be made on this scale that was entirely original. And I was just surprised by the script. I found the mythology to be really detailed, the world-building to be really interesting.

The sets appear to be mostly real, as do many of the effects. Some people are asking questions about what it was like to deal with the CG. In reality, it was almost imperceptible to us — save for the witch bar, where there was quite a bit of CG effects. But even there, there were a lot of practical effects. Most of the time, we were surrounded by real things. Even the sentinel at the end — there was a sentinel there. That goes a long way to making

you feel rooted in the space. Is it typical for you to get so involved with looking at all aspects of a production? These are all questions I ask, honestly. When I read something, I want to know what the approach is, who’s going to shoot it, how it’s going to be shot, what is the visual tone of the film and what are the designs going to look like. I’m a nerd, so I always ask these questions.

“The Last Witch Hunter isn’t based on a book series. But it feels like it is. And perhaps it should be. It’s a riot of dense, impenetrable mythology about Vin Diesel’s Kaulder, a slayer cursed with immortality, “Highlanderstyle, now cruising about New York City, keeping an underworld of witches in line. There’s a token conspiracy that forces Kaulder to team with a nice witch (Rose Leslie) who has the secret power of invading other people’s dreams and who is also a bartender. Weirdness gets piled on like a mile-high

“Scooby Doo sandwich. There’s a blocky monster who works for a witch council. There’s Michael Caine, mostly playing a corpse. There’s a tree made of gummi bears. The wacko keeps coming, and the world expands ever outward, like the tendrils that spring from the film’s many, many pieces of tree and wood imagery. Maybe we even succumb to the insanity. It’s the only sane response. It can be freeing, even fun, to give yourself over to a film like “The Last Witch Hunter, especially because it comes from a good place. It was ushered forth by its star, a not-so-secret D&D and Tolkien nerd who actually seems to be having fun. In the last few “Fast and/or Furious outings, he’s seemed sleepy, if not full-on narcoleptic. But in “The Last Witch Hunter, he cracks jokes, even flirts with Leslie. “Witch Hunter has the ricketiest of foundations, but at least it’s not hollow.

A scene of Bill Murray playing “Smoke on the Water for native Afghans doesn’t go so well in “Rock the Kasbah. KERRY HAYES

“Rock the Kasbah Director: Barry Levinson Stars: Bill Murray, Kate Hudson Rating: PG-13

••••• Bill Murray has been an untouchable god since “Rushmore,â€? or perhaps forever, so it’s odd to think of him ever being terrible. Yet here’s “Rock the Kasbah,â€? which is a good/ bad way of seeing Murray at his worst. It’s him indulging in his laziest and most clueless tendencies, among them ignoring an obviously sloppy and dumb script that teems with Ugly Americanisms. “Rock the Kasbahâ€? is essentially “Bill Murray Goes to Afghanistan,â€? with his scuzzy music promoter winding up

in Kabul intending to put on a show; instead, he gets gunplay and jokes about foreigners. Eventually he scores a new ďŹ nd: an Afghan tribeswoman who has the chops to be the ďŹ rst woman participant on “Afghan Idol.â€? Murray won’t let this turn into a soft-hearted “Danny Collins,â€? but he does seem illadvisedly game to just act like a doofus in another country. And this is how a comic institution becomes actively annoying. An endless scene of him howling “Smoke on the Waterâ€? in front of confused tribesmen is a low point in the Murray canon. It makes “Larger Than Life,â€? the elephant comedy from his pre-“Rushmoreâ€? dog days, look enticing. MP

Aubrey Peeples (with “Aladdin Sane face paint) tries to overcome the evil managerial stylings of Juliette Lewis in the “Jem and the Holograms movie. UNIVERSAL PICTURES

‘Jem and the Holograms’ Director: Jon M. Chu Stars: Aubrey Peeples, Juliette Lewis Rating: PG

••••• A straight-faced “Josie and the Pussycats,â€? but with a robot, the “Jem and the Hologramsâ€? movie is an earnest melodrama, and also an origin story, but also a sometime sci-ďŹ movie, plus a YA movie, as well as a movie for the Miley/Taylor generation, and even occasionally an ad-libheavy comedy, because those are popular too. It’s a movie

about a crisis of identity: Shy teen Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples) can only sing through her titular persona, which includes pink hair and a hot red “Aladdin Saneâ€? streak across her face. But it’s also a movie with a crisis of identity. For a while, things seem simple, even dull. Jerrica and sibs are just aspiring musicians who go viral, which shues them into the hands of blatantly evil label owner Erica Raymond, played with copious, awe-inspiring bitchiness by Juliette Lewis. For a while, you might think an old Hasbro toon has been turned into a painfully ordinary tale of corruption in the music

biz. Then comes the robot. This is a sci-ďŹ movie too? Goofy and bleep-blooping in the George Lucas mould, he’s mostly around to spice up a narrative that was being made fun of all the way back in 1970’s “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.â€? For a ďŹ lm with futuristic tech (but only two holograms), it’s too often stuck in the boring real world, not the fantastical one of the show. These are all problems that can be ďŹ xed in the sequel, for this is also, on top of everything else, in its ďŹ nal moments a Marvel movie, with a bumper touting stu that would bae everyone but the fans. Look out for the top matchups in NFL Week 7 One-week fantasy football players might not realize this because they have their head down grinding out lineups, but we have reached the traditional season-long fantasy halfway point. It is all downhill (or uphill) from here.

Passing Matchup Gems 1. CHARGERS VS. RAIDERS You don’t need to know the Raiders are the secondworst defense against the pass. Philip Rivers just ripped a good Green Bay Packers defense for over 500 yards. The Chargers are also back home. 2. COWBOYS VS. GIANTS You might not trust Matt Cassel ($6,400) in his first Cowboys start, but he is facing a weak Giants secondary that has allowed the third-most passing yards this season. Cassel, Jason Witten ($5,600), Terrance Williams ($5,900) and Cole Beasley ($5,200) are options to fill out lineups with short money.

Rushing Matchup Gems 1. GURLEY VS. BROWNS Todd Gurley ($7,400) should already be on the top of everyone’s lineup list, as we wrote in Wednesday’s Fantasy Class. He has made two starts in his young career and averaged over 150 yards, 25 touches and 6.2 yards per carry. 2. PETERSON VS. LIONS The Lions are sixth-worst against the run and have allowed the second-most rushing touchdowns to fantasy backs, per FFToday.com. Adrian Peterson ($8,900) should be busy here.

Defenses vs. Bad QBs 1. REDSKINS VS. WINSTON The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jameis Pick-6-ston return from their bye week against an underrated Redskins defense ranked eighth in the NFL right now. The Redskins are a value at $4,400. 2. FALCONS VS. MARIOTA Marcus Mariota has been dealing with a knee issue, so he will not be 100 percent if he does play. Also, Dan Quinn’s presence is a lot more significant than you might have imagined.

Scorching-hot Mets wait for opponent The Mets will either face the Blue Jays or Royals in the 2015 World Series.

What to watch for as Giants host Cowboys The Giants will look to avenge their season-opening loss, and stay atop the NFC East Sunday. And should they do that, they could put a crippling blow to any hope that the Dallas Cowboys (2-3) have of staying in the divisional race. Can they protect Eli? Eli Manning was sacked three times last week, and battered countless other times — including being forced into a couple of intentional grounding calls due to the fierce rush. He was an entirely different quarterback during his thrilling comeback victory over the 49ers two weeks ago than he was in Philadelphia. That was due to the fact his offensive linemen took care of him against San Francisco, but hung him out to dry against the Eagles.

ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

The Mets made quick work of the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS, sweeping the series. They never trailed in any game during the series, and looked superior on both sides of the ball. Cubs manager Joe Maddon was gracious in defeat, telling reporters after the game, “They played well. They didn’t make mistakes. I’ve got to give them credit.” Because they won the NLCS so quickly, the Mets will be able to set their starting rotation for the World Series exactly the way they want it. Jacob deGrom, who is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts this postseason, will most likely start Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Tuesday night, Oct. 27. After deGrom, the Mets have Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz to turn to, and so far the Mets starters have been nothing short of incredible in the postseason. The Mets’ relievers have been just as good, and they’ve been led by Jeurys Familia, who finished all four games against the Cubs in the NLCS. Familia has yet to allow a run in 9.2 innings of work this postseason, and has surrendered just two hits and two walks. Familia has five saves in eight appearances. Addison Reed had three scoreless outings in four appearances during the playoffs, and looks like the M e t s ’ secondbest option out of the bullpen going i n t o

the World Series. Tyler Clippard has been the set-up man but has a 5.79 ERA in 4.2 innings, which is l e s s than ideal.

Bartolo Colon, who up until this season had never pitched in relief, has been able to pitch effectively when the Mets starters stumble. As for the Mets’ offense, no one has been swinging a hotter bat — ever — than NLCS MVP Daniel Murphy. The Mets’ infielder broke an MLB record by hitting a home run in six straight playoff games, despite the fact that he had 14 home runs all year coming into the postseason. He is currently batting .421 this October. When asked after the game by TBS about his hot streak, the humble Murphy could not come up with a reason. “I can’t explain it,” Murphy said, “It’s such a blessing to contribute to what we’ve been able to do.” Maddon was dumbfounded when asked to explain Murphy’s hot streak as well. “It’s just incredible,”

he told the media after the game. “Line drive to left, homer to right or homer to center. He looks like he’s going to hit the ball hard on every pitch. It’s unusual to see a guy that locked in.” Curtis Granderson (.303) and Wilmer Flores (.292) have also been getting on base. Yoenis Cespedes and Travis d’Arnaud have provided some pop. Having five days off between games could affect the Mets’ momentum, but if it doesn’t, they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the World Series.

Start fast, and stay fast The Giants executed a brilliant 80-yard touchdown-scoring drive to start last week’s game, and then fizzled out the rest of the way, never to score again. Despite being undermanned, the Cowboys are still a formidable foe, simply off of familiarity, so Big Blue will need to jump on them early and not give them any hope of staying in the game. When bad teams hang around too long, it’s a recipe for disaster for the superior team, so Manning and Co. will need to duplicate last week’s start and then keep the momentum going. Capitalize on opportunities Head coach Tom Coughlin stresses the importance of winning the turnover battle each week, and last week against the Eagles was a time where winning that margin didn’t translate to a victory. It was a rare occurrence, as they had a plus-one in that category, but didn’t score a single point off their four takeaways. Dallas’ new starting quarterback, Matt Cassel, has been known to give some away (14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in the last two seasons), so it’s imperative that Big Blue finds a way to force those errors — and capitalize. “We had four turnovers (last week) and nothing to show for it,” Coughlin said. “That was a very unusual circumstance in any game. Usually when you do have an opportunity for those things to take place, you take advantage -- and quite frankly, there probably could have been more. We didn’t take advantage of anything and that’s disappointing.” TONY WILLIAMS

Electronic BlackJack Sheldon Richardson and the Jets pass rush will have Tom Brady in its sights all afternoon Sunday. GETTY IMAGES

Things to watch for as the Jets take on the Patriots A mid-season battle for the AFC East lead kicks off Sunday at 1 p.m. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

Don’t look now but the New York Jets are 4-1 and are suddenly right in the thick of things for the playoffs. And on Sunday, they face their old nemesis in the Patriots and at a place they haven’t won at since the 2010 playoffs. Now they have an opponent that is undefeated and clearly the talk of the league for things other than cheating and Deflategate. The Patriots are good, and until otherwise are the class of the division.

1

MATCH WITS WITH BRADY

The Jets, with one of the best defenses in the league, will have to slow down a Patriots offense that is deep and talented. And it is led by Tom Brady, whose numbers are fully inflated this year. In fact, he is on pace for a career-year in yards (5,437) and touchdowns (45), a pace

that would easily eclipse his gaudy numbers from 2011. He’s also on track to only throw three interceptions this season. “He’s been in the same scheme for a long time. He knows the guys he’s worked with. [Julian] Edelman, [Danny] Amendola, [Rob Gronkowski]. In saying that, they’ve got great chemistry and kind of knowing where guys are supposed to be,” Jets linebacker Calvin Pace said. “They don’t make mistakes, they’re not going to beat themselves and our challenge is to try and force them to make mistakes, get some pressure on Tom and make his day difficult.”

2NOTHING NEW HERE

The Patriots are 5-0 for the fourth time in franchise history and for the third time since they drafted Brady. A win on Sunday would make them 6-0 for the third time in team history but also would put them in a strong spot to win seven consecutive AFC East titles. If they do that, it would be a new record in the NFL. For comparison sake, the Jets last won the division in 2002.

3CONTROL TURNOVERS

Not surprisingly, in games where Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick limits turnovers, the Jets win. The team is 4-0 when Fitzpatrick throws a single interception, showing that with decent quarterback play, the Jets can be a dangerous team. “I think he’s a really smart player. They’ve put a lot on him in terms of running the offense. They check plays and take the best look and things like that,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said. “In the passing game, I think he throws into some tight coverage situations, but he’s got big receivers like [Brandon] Marshall and [Eric] Decker and gives them a chance to make plays on the ball and they’re making them. I don’t think we’re going to fool this guy too much, I don’t really think that’s part of it.” In Week 3, when Fitzpatrick had three interceptions, the Jets lost. If he can make smart throws, the Jets have a chance in every game this season. Including this one.
