Before they hit the online marketplace (100 or so at a time for seven weeks of one-week bidding wars), though, Goldberg said the state tries to find the items’ owners via placing ads, setting up at fairs and visiting senior centers. “It is amazing how many people’s things come up on the list and how excited they are, even if it’s only a $50 gift card they forgot to use,” she said. “When we go around the state, those people will say, ‘Oh my goodness. I could have sworn in a picture of my great aunt Lucy she was wearing that necklace.’ That is the kind of thing that

happens.” The onus is often on the claimants to prove that the pewter tray or the massive silver dollar or pearl necklace is theirs, said Mark Bracken, the state’s assistant treasurer in charge of unclaimed property. It’s also big business, if one can call it that, for the Treasury. The state expects to take in $325,000 or more this year — but they also have to fork over those pesky eBay sellers’ fees, which Bracken said even the commonwealth has to pay. Nearly half of all the items end up being sold to people who live in Massachusetts, according to Goldberg. A reminder: The state maintains a list of unclaimed monetary policy —stocks, bank accounts, insurance payments — that officials recently valued at about $2 billion.

BRIEFS Woman charged with uncle’s Hyde Park murder to undergo mental health evaluation The woman charged with killing her uncle over the weekend was ordered on Monday to undergo a mental health evaluation. Yvonne Lewis, 36, was charged with fatally shooting Clive Francis in a Hyde Park home on Saturday afternoon. Assistant District Attorney Ian Polumbaum told the West Roxbury Municipal court that Lewis had been staying at the Wood Avenue residence since moving back from Georgia earlier this year. She had been reclusive and acting erratically, Polumbaum said, so relatives called Francis, believing that he could calm her down. Francis was apparently trying to vacuum pieces of a broken mirror when Lewis allegedly shot him in the head. He was rushed to Brigham and
then stole Francis’ SUV. Using a cellphone that was in the car, cops later tracked the vehicle and Lewis to a hotel, where she was found curled up in the hallway. Lewis will return to court on Nov. 16. NATE HOMAN

EXPERIENCE & RESULTS THAT COUNT
Treatment-first program working in Gloucester Officials in Gloucester said Monday they are seeing success in their program aimed at treating, not charging, people struggling with heroin or other opioid addiction. Since June 1, the Gloucester Police Department has been placing people in treatment facilities, rather than jail cells for possession of opiates. Thus far, 260 people have been placed in treatment facilities. Thirty-four other police departments, including 17 in Massachusetts, have enacted similar programs in attempts to stem the tides of the opioid epidemic. “We are very encouraged by what we’re seeing so far,” Chief Leonard Campanello said in a statement. “Now, we are also beginning to see other benefits in crime statistics and monetary costs that also show us that we appear to be on the right path.”
Seized heroin PROVIDED
According to the department, drug- and addiction-related crimes like shoplifting, breaking and entering and larceny have dropped 23 percent from June to August in comparison to last year. The department also said it costs less money to treat someone than it does to lock them up. According to a press release from the GPD, it costs approximately $55 per person in treatment, compared to the $220 it costs to arrest, process and hold a person for one day. These programs cost taxpayers nothing, ac-
cording the GPD. Instead, this entire program is funded on drug seizure money. “We are seeing real people get their lives back, and if we see a reduction in crime and cost savings, that is a great bonus,” Campanello said. “Perhaps most compelling is that we saw five suspected heroin deaths in the first five months of 2015. Since the program began, we have seen one. One is still too many, but we are most hopeful that the hope of real and immediate help is saving lives.” NATE HOMAN

The health-care sector is generally a solid bet career-wise, but here’s a good way to flush any job security down the drain: Try to take photos of a comatose Lamar Odom that you can then sell to the tabloids. Several staffers at Nevada’s Sunrise Hospital were reportedly fired after trying to sneak snaps of the former NBA star while he was under care there, according to TMZ — which is particularly amusing, because who the hell do you think they were going to try to sell them to? The newly fired also reportedly tried to access Odom’s medical records, which is obviously a big no-no.

Running with the devil Erika Christensen falls for a monster on “Wicked City.” LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld
lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us
ABC’s new drama “Wicked City” is aptly named: Set in the anything-goes club scene in L.A. in the ’80s, the show follows the exploits of a serial killer (Ed Westwick) and the cop trying to track him down (Jeremy Sisto). But Westwick’s Kent isn’t just some sick loner — he gets involved with a lonely single mother played by Erika Christensen (most recently of “Parenthood”). As to what could suck someone in to such a monster, well, Christensen says it’s complicated. “She’s on such a ride from the moment she meets Kent. She’s just in, hook, line and sinker, but she doesn’t know where she’s going. I think that she’s going to learn a lot about herself,” Christensen explains. It seems hard to believe she could be so oblivious to the actions of her paramour, and Christensen says she may eventually work out what Kent’s up to. “I think she

has to at some point, and I don’t know how much she learns, how fast, and how on board she’s going to be with it,” she says. “But we have to start from the place of knowing that she is madly in love with this person.” And Kent is pretty good at getting people to like him. “He’s everything she’s ever wanted in a man. He makes her feel comfortable in her own skin. He makes her feel sexy and wanted, and he offers an excitement that she doesn’t have in her
life,” Christensen says of her character. “She’s an abused person. She’s not been treated well. And so for someone to be a kind of Prince Charming for her, she’s going to follow him wherever he goes.” It’s certainly a pretty drastic shift in GETTY tone from IMAGES the world
of “Parenthood,” and Christensen jokes that she’s a little concerned about her fans. “Listen, I’ve been trying to warn them that this is not the same thing, but it should be a whole different kind of fun,” she says.

Keep an eye on the clock Daylight Saving Time ends on the same night as Halloween this year, which seems like a good thing — an extra hour on the hardest-partying night of the year is the best treat, right? Maybe. It’s easy to let the night take you where it wants, but you could end up getting sick from drinking longer than normal, or being tired enough to fall asleep on the train and end up in Coney Island (and surge pricing is the ultimate party foul). While you do have Sunday to sleep off bad decisions, Monday morning will be a lot less cruel if you turn down at your usual 3 a.m., rather than when the clock says it’s 3 a.m.

Rethink trick-or-treating You don’t have to give up Halloween’s most hallowed tradition. If going to a club or other big event isn’t your speed, organize your own party. The cocktails are easy — a little cranberry juice and anything is bloody, swap the tequila for mezcal and you’ve got instant smoke and spice — and instead of setting out bowls of candy, ask everyone to bring a home-baked treat. Set up all the pans and plates on various tables and surfaces around your home, and you’ve got adult trick-or-treating.
found that several brands of nonprescription costume contacts contained chlorine and other harmful chemicals, likely from the dyes used on the lenses. Contacts that don’t fit your eyes can also scratch the cornea, which can cause infection and blindness. Get a prescription from an ophthalmologist, or find a different accessory.
Get home safely If you’re walking home and feel unsafe but can’t rely on calling someone, there’s an app that will let a friend virtually walk with you. Available for free (iOS and Android), Companion — originally created for college students who often have to cross dark campuses to get home — can ping one of your contacts (they don’t even need to have the app installed) and send them a link to track you on a map. Enter your destinaPROVID ED tion, and if anything happens — you make a wrong turn, start running or the headphones are pulled out of the jack — the app turns the phone into a personal alarm system with loud sounds to scare off criminals and can even call 911. The person at the other end of the app also gets an alert.

The cacao is fair trade and organic, and the bars are sweetened only with coconut sugar, which has a lower glycemic index, so you don’t have to worry about sugar spikes. HIGHER EDUCATION

Yes, it’s worth going to college Haters to the left: Getting a postsecondary degree is absolutely worth it. For a nation that needs more college graduates, we seem oddly hellbent on discouraging as many people as possible from getting degrees. The latest headlines, prompted by a multiyear survey on attitudes toward college conducted by Gallup and Purdue University, blared that “less than half of recent grads think college was worth the cost.” You might be surprised to learn, then, that the actual poll of 30,000 college alumni found that the vast majority of graduates agreed that their education was worth the cost. Recent graduates were less enthusiastic than older ones — but only the recent graduates who took out more than $50,000

answering with a “4” (27 percent) or a “5” (50 percent). The reduced conviction among recent graduates is hardly surprising, since they have emerged with more debt and

ates earn about 62 percent of what those with four-year degrees earn, according to a Pew Research Center study. In 1979, people with only high school educations earned 77 percent of what college graduates made. Incomes and economic opportunities for high-school-only graduates have collapsed. The bottom line is that most educations are not worth having to take on massive debt. In addition, not everyone needs a four-year degree. Some people with bachelor’s degrees do not earn very much and may have been better off learning a trade or obtaining a twoyear degree. But virtually everyone should consider some postsecondary training if they do not want to fall down the economic ladder. And that is the message we should be sending, loud and clear. REUTERS

Celtics can’t afford slow start The C’s open their 2015-16 season Wednesday and need wins early on. JAMES TOSCANO @Jimmy_Toscano sports@metro.us
As we all know, the preseason doesn’t mean a whole lot from a wins and losses standpoint. That said, the Celtics will gladly take a 6-1 record as they prepare for the season opener Wednesday at the TD Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers (7:30 p.m., CSNNE). The C’s seem like an improved team after last year’s surprising second-half run to the playoffs. The Celtics, led by head coach Brad Stevens, are looking to make even more noise this season — and this time from the very beginning. Last year, the C’s got

off to a 4-11 start to the season. They played a lot of tough teams in November — games in Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Memphis, with home against the Thunder, Cavs, Blazers and Spurs. While they’ll see some of those teams early on this season, November doesn’t look so daunting. But regardless of which team is on the schedule, the Celtics should feel they can hang with any team. Too often last year we saw them go down by double digits early on in a game only to stage a big comeback that fell short. Locking in at tip-off is going to be key for this year’s team. “The way that I’d phrase it is, ‘Just get off to a good start,’” Stevens said after the team’s final preseason game. “You have to start games well, you have to start third

quarters well. And then you have to be able to finish quarters. And there have been moments that — we’re going to find out that a starting group starts games well, starts third quarters well, and if not we’ll make changes swiftly, because we can. “So, hey, it’s a long year, but you’ve got to start well and you’ve got to be prepared to play. And I think when you’re generally prepared to play you look engaged, you sound engaged, and you come out ready to roll right from the get-go.” The Celtics have
started Marcus Smart, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, David Lee, and Tyler Zeller in four preseason games this year — including the final two — and it’s assumed that those five will get the start when the regular season begins. But Boston has the depth and the interchangeable parts to allow Stevens to get creative with his lineups, as long as his guys stay healthy. Heading into the regular season, health is on the Celtics’ side — and they’re out to prove talent is on their side too. “We all grew up being the best player on our team, respectively, and competing and winning,” Smart said. “We all are used to winning. So, when we get out there against somebody that’s just as good as us, we want to show what we have and showcase our talents.”
