A New Mexico man who had been watching the hit TV series “The Walking Dead” beat his friend to death because he believed the victim was turning into a zombie, police said Monday. Damon Perry, 23, of Prewitt, New Mexico, is charged with murder after allegedly attacking Christopher Paquin, also 23, with kicks, punches, sharp-edged objects and items including a guitar and a microwave oven, police said. The pair had been “binge watching” episodes of the popular AMC show. REUTERS

Eating processed meats like hot dogs, sausages or bacon can lead to cancer, and red meat is a likely cause of the disease, the World Health Organization said. The review by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer put processed meat in its Group 1 list, for which there is “sufficient evidence” of cancer links.

New York City ‘bans the box’

BRIEFS Part of Grand Central dining concourse closes for LIRR construction The MTA said Monday that a section of Grand Central Terminal’s lower-level dining area will close for structural construction on the future Long Island Rail Road extension. Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA Capital Construction, said the construction to make way for staircases and escalators is a “major milestone” for the East Side Access project that will eventually

bring an eight-track LIRR terminal below Grand Central. The construction affects a 1,920-square-foot area of the lower-level concourse between Tracks 112 and 115. The MTA said the area, which usually has 44 tables and 140 chairs, will be put elsewhere in the concourse. No restaurants will close. Horodniceanu said construction will be scheduled with “minimal disruption” to diners and travelers in the rest of the concourse.

Construction is expected to take up to 18 months, the MTA said. The construction is part of a $430 million contract awarded earlier this year for structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural work on the LIRR concourse. Metro-North spokesman Aaron Donovan said Monday that service is expected to start rolling in December 2022. Once completed, the new terminal below Grand Central will connect all 11 branches of the LIRR. METRO

New law says employers can’t ask about criminal convictions until the final stages of the hiring process. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

Starting Tuesday, New Yorkers applying for jobs won’t initially need to disclose whether they’ve previously been convicted of a crime. The Fair Chance Act, which was introduced to City Council in 2014 by Council Member Jumaane Williams, was passed by the council in June and signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in late July. The law, which the city said “strengthens provisions of the City’s Human Rights Law,” allows employers to conduct a criminal background check only after they make a conditional job offer to a prospective employee. De Blasio said at the signings the “bill opens the door to jobs for New Yorkers who have already paid their debt to society, rather than condemning them to a grim economic future.” The law bans employers from listing “background check required” in job postings, or asking whether an applicant has been convicted of a crime during the application process. Alyssa Aguilera, political director at VOCAL-NY, said the “far reaching bill” applies to every employer in New York City with more than four employ-

ers, and that an estimated 2.5 million people in the city have a criminal record. “It’s more than banning the box,” Aguilera said. “They [employers] can’t put in the job posting, ask during the interview process until the final stages of the hiring process until they have all the info about the good things and qualifications on merit of the candidate.” Aguilera said VOCAL members are excited about the new law, and the process might even streamline employment for employers, who might have to only one run background check instead of many if the candidate is a good fit. “This opens a huge opportunity for people with criminal convictions to be evaluated on something other than their criminal records, only a part of who they are,” said Vivian Nixon, executive director of College and Community Fellowship, which helps previously incarcerated women achieve college degrees. Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, told Metro she believes the act will make it more difficult on prospective employees and employers. “We would have supported a “ban the box” statute that was less intrusive, with not as many hoops for the employer to jump through,” Wylde said. “What we appreciate is the Human Rights Commission setting up a process [to explain the rules].”

Most precincts in anti-gun program see drop in shootings Advocates and experts question statistics as a measure of success in community outreach to end rampant gun violence. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

chester.soria@metro.us

An 8 percent reduction in shootings across specific precincts in a program boosted by City Hall funding has officials claiming success even as the relationship between the project and recent crime rates remains blurry. Last year, the de Blasio administration joined the City Council to disburse $12.7 million between community organizations and social services tasked with reducing gun violence and offering supportive programs for local youth. As overall shootings are down citywide 1.8 percent — 947 incidents as of Oct. 25, 2015, compared with 965 in the same period last year — 12 out of 17 precincts participating in the program have seen a drop in shootings. Eric Cumberbatch, di-

Rudy Suggs, 59, outreach worker, spreads the word of S.O.S. by handing out “Palm Cards.” Bottom right, a map shows the “S.O.S.” target area in Crown Heights. MILES DIXON, METRO

rector of the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice anti-gun violence initiatives, saw the drop in shootings within participating precincts as a success. “By leveraging credible messengers in neighborhoods around New York City, we have been able to connect many young New Yorkers to a network of services that supports them on a path to a positive lifestyle,” Cumberbatch said in a statement. Brooklyn Council

Member Jumaane Williams, who also co-chairs the body’s gun violence task force, told Metro he thought the overall program — which designated groups to work within 40-block areas inside their larger police precinct — does invaluable work on a ground level. However, Williams said he’d like to see the mayor’s office increase interagency collaboration. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s August 2014 announcement

committed to bringing in six agencies — including the health and education departments — to support a reduction in gun violence. “Whether it’s Ebola or Legionnaires’, the public sees these agencies working together,” Williams said. “We need a clarion call around the disease of gun violence, and see the same response from agencies.” On the ground, S.O.S. Crown Heights is one

of a handful of groups around the city assigned with working with their neighbors to reduce gun violence on a community level. Similar organizations have been working with City Council members since 2009, though officials were clear to point out some communities may have their own efforts that help drive down shootings. Crown Heights’ 77th Precinct, in which S.O.S. operates its 40-block area, has seen an overall drop in shooting incidents: 27 as of Sept. 27, 2015, compared with 31 in the same time frame one year earlier. At the same time, the Bronx’s 44th and 46th precincts, Brooklyn’s 60th and 75th precincts as well as Staten Island’s 120th Precinct have all seen slight increases in shootings. Suggs said despite pockets of violence, he and the organization have seen recent change for the better in his neighborhood of 40 years. S.O.S. Crown Heights, like their fellow organizations, work with residents who have turned their own lives around to connect their neighbors with conflict mediation,

mental health services and jobs. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but what we try to do is help kids see things earlier in life — not when they turn 35, 36, 37 — to see their mistakes,” Suggs said. Despite City Hall’s general satisfaction with the results of the program so far, John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Eugene O’Donnell, a former NYPD officer and prosecutor, said it can be hard to pinpoint its exact value. Similar programs in Chicago haven’t proven to be statistically effective, he said. “But if it stops one person from being shot, if it turns one person away from violence — it’s worth what you spend on it,” O’Donnell added. Suggs said he measures his own success as any time he convinces a young man or woman to go back to school or just ask for advice. He then pointed to a poster on the wall. “It’s been 33 days since our last shooting,” it read, the number in blue dryerase marker. “Each day that number goes up,” Suggs said, “we’re successful.”

The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range where the quake was centered. A major earthquake struck the remote Afghan northeast Monday, killing more than 200 people in Afghanistan and nearby northern Pakistan, injuring hundreds and sending shock waves as far as New Delhi, officials said. In one of the worst incidents, at least 12 girls were killed in a stampede to flee their school building in Taloqan, just west of Badakhshan province where the tremor’s epicenter was located. “They fell under the

feet of other students,” said Abdul Razaq Zinda, provincial head of the Afghan National Disaster Management Agency, who reported heavy damage in Takhar. Shockwaves were felt in New Delhi in northern India and across northern Pakistan, where hundreds of people ran out of buildings as the ground rolled beneath them. No deaths were reported in India. “We were very scared ... We saw people leaving buildings, and we were remembering our God,” Pakistani journalist Zubair Khan said by telephone from the Swat Valley northwest of the capital Islamabad. “I was in my car and, when I stopped my car, the car itself was shaking as if someone was pushing it back and forth.” The United States and Iran were among

countries that offered to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, which already depends heavily on foreign aid after decades of war that have wrecked its economy and infrastructure. The quake was 132 miles deep and centred 158 miles northeast of Kabul in Badakhshan province. The U.S. Geological Survey initially measured the magnitude at 7.7, then revised it to 7.5. Just over a decade ago, a 7.6 magnitude quake in another part of northern Pakistan killed about 75,000 people. In Afghanistan, where rescue and relief work is likely to be complicated by security threats created by a Taliban insurgency, more than 50 people were reported dead in several provinces including Badakhshan, where hundreds were killed in mudslides last year. Shoulder Arthritis Treatments Keeping Boomers Active Into Their 60’s, 70’s Even 80’s? If you suffer with painful shoulder arthritis – science may have finally found the answer you’ve been looking for. Here is why: Researchers have discovered an natural gel like medicine that is like “joint oil.” This all-natural gel is one of the naturally occurring lubricating substances in your shoulder joint that cushions and lubricates the joint which dries out over time due to wear-and-tear, age or injury. But when doctors precisely place this lubricating gel into your shoulder joint by using advanced digital imaging technology – it is like putting oil on a rusty door hinge. It lubricates the joint and can decrease pain and stiffness. For some, results can be dramatic and last for months. Years for some. Often times shoulder surgery can be avoided.

Know this: This is NOT a supplement you can buy over the counter or on the internet. This is a REAL medical treatment that must be given by a trained health care professional. And the great news is: There is a free report and information kit available that tells you everything you need to know about this treatment. It also tells you all about cuttingedge medical clinics right here in New York City that are offering this cutting-edge treatment with tremendous success. To get your information kit or to schedule a NoObligation Risk Free Shoulder Screening simply call 800-627-PAIN (7246).

US Navy to send destroyer within 12 miles of artificial Chinese islands The patrols will mark the most serious U.S. challenge yet to the 12-nauticalmile territorial limit China claims around the islands and follows months of deliberation. The U.S. Navy plans to send the destroyer U.S.S. Lassen within 12 nautical miles of artificial islands built by China in the South China Sea within 24 hours, in the first of a series of challenges to China’s territorial claims, a U.S. defense official said Monday. The patrol would occur near Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago, features that were formerly submerged at high tide before China began a massive dredging project to turn them into islands in 2014. The ship would likely be accompanied by a U.S. Navy P-8A surveillance plane and possibly P-3 surveillance plane, which have been conducting regular surveillance missions in the region, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. weeks and could also be conducted around features that Vietnam and the Philippines have built up in the Spratlys, the official added. “This is something that will be a regular occurrence, not a one-off event,” said the official. “It’s not something that’s unique to China.” White House spokesman Josh Earnest referred questions on any specific operations to the Pentagon but said the United States had made clear to China the importance of free flow of commerce in the South China Sea. “There are billions of dollars of commerce that float through that region of the world,” Earnest told a news briefing. The patrols will mark the most serious U.S. challenge yet to the 12-nautical-mile territorial limit China claims around the islands and follows months of deliberation.

“Ensuring that free flow of commerce ... is critical to the global economy,” Josh Earnest

The move risks significantly upsetting already strained ties with China, the world’s secondbiggest economy, with which U.S. business and economic interests are deeply intertwined. It would be the first time the United States has gone within 12 miles of the features since China began building the reefs up in 2014. It last went within 12 miles of Chinese-claimed territory in the Spratlys in 2012. REUTERS

14 HIGHER EDUCATION

Yes, it’s worth going to college Haters to the left: Getting a postsecondary degree is absolutely worth it. For a nation that needs more college graduates, we seem oddly hellbent on discouraging as many people as possible from getting degrees. The latest headlines, prompted by a multiyear survey on attitudes toward college conducted by Gallup and Purdue University, blared that “less than half of recent grads think college was worth the cost.” You might be surprised to learn, then, that the actual poll of 30,000 college alumni found that the vast majority of graduates agreed that their education was worth the cost. Recent graduates were less enthusiastic than older ones — but only the recent graduates who took out more than

$50,000 in loans. The the national online survey asked graduates to rate on a 1-to-5 scale whether their educations were worth the cost. Nationally, 77 percent agreed,

answering with a “4” (27 percent) or a “5” (50 percent). The reduced conviction among recent graduates is hardly surprising, since they have emerged with more debt and

poorer employment prospects due to a struggling economy. However, as their debts get paid off and their earnings rise, they may have a change of heart. They also will have

a chance to witness what happens to their peers who have only high school degrees as an already-substantial earnings gap continues to widen. High school gradu-

ates earn about 62 percent of what those with four-year degrees earn, according to a Pew Research Center study. In 1979, people with only high school educations earned 77 percent of what college graduates made. Incomes and economic opportunities for high-school-only graduates have collapsed. The bottom line is that most educations are not worth having to take on massive debt. In addition, not everyone needs a four-year degree. Some people with bachelor’s degrees do not earn very much, and may have been better off learning a trade or obtaining a twoyear degree. But virtually everyone should consider some postsecondary training if they do not want to fall down the economic ladder. And that is the message we should be sending, loud and clear. REUTERS

Hospital staff axed for trying to get Lamar Odom pics The health-care sector is generally a solid bet career-wise, but here’s a good way to flush any job security down the drain: Try to take photos of a comatose Lamar Odom that you can then sell to the tabloids. Several staffers at Nevada’s Sunrise Hospital were reportedly fired after trying to sneak snaps of the former NBA star while he was under care there, according to TMZ — which is particularly amusing, because who the hell do you think they were going to try to sell them to? The newly fired also reportedly tried to access Odom’s medical records, which is obviously a big no-no.

Everything wrong with ‘Back to the Future II’ Sure, we all had a great time last week with all the Back to the Future Day fun, but consider this the painful, wellearned hangover. While I still

@Oprah Can I get a Witness?!

maintain “Back to the Future II” is great and doesn’t get the credit it deserves, it is not without fault, as the CinemaSins folks are more than happy to point out. And it’s really tough to get around the biggest sin: thinking people would still be using fax machines in 2015. Seriously, fax machines?

@kirstiealley Ugh some animal on the roof or in the wall..slightly horrifying and sorta funny..wild life by day sucks by night

Leah Remini is not being shy about her dislike of the Church of Scientology — which isn’t all that surprising, considering she has a book coming out called “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology.” For instance, did you know: “Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of

Scientology itself,” she says in an interview with “20/20” airing this week. “You are evil.” Seems a bit harsh. Remember when people actually used to be afraid of crossing the Church of Scientology because of how much damage they could do to your career or because of all their scary lawyers? So weird, right?

@billyeichner Very proud to say I wrote that Adele song. I picked up the phone one day and I was, like, “Hello?” and I thought “that’s a song”

@mindykaling I’m sick and re-watching The Squid & The Whale. Owen Kline is funnier than any person on earth. Did we talk about this enough at the time?

Internet pranksters, Demi Lovato is not amused. Recently, an unflattering photo of the singer inspired a new online folklore legend, Poot Lovato, her fictional twin sister who “was locked in a basement her whole life.” The joke spawned a fake Twitter account a full, fanpublished back story and a Wikipedia page. And guess what! Demi

herself doesn’t dig it. “Cool to see a s—ty angle turn into a meme that circulates the Internet to people’s amusement ha,” she tweeted, using the least convincing laugh I’ve heard since the last time I tried to do standup. “Oh and make actual ‘headlines.’” Does this one count? Anyway, she clearly thought better of her complaining, as she deleted the tweet right quick. Or maybe Poot asked her to?

No Jimmy Fallon appendage is safe Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Jimmy Fallon had to be rushed to the hospital because he hurt his hand. No, his other hand. The “Tonight Show” host — who has been recovering from a nasty kitchen accident from over the summer when he almost cut off a finger — took a tumble this weekend and messed up his healthier hand. He was carousing after receiving an award from the Harvard Lampoon, carrying a bottle of Jaegermeister, when “some random girl kneeled down in front of him abruptly as he was turning around and he tripped over her,” a source tells People magazine. And down went Fallon, booze bottle and all. He was rushed to Massachusetts General and bandaged up. At this point, if I were Fallon’s feet I’d be worried.

ABC’s new drama “Wicked City is aptly named: Set in the anything-goes club scene in L.A. in the early ’80s, the show follows the exploits of a serial killer (Ed Westwick of “Gossip Girl fame) and the cop trying to track him down (Jeremy Sisto from “Suburgatory). But Westwick’s Kent isn’t just some sick loner — he gets involved with a lonely single mother played by Erika Christensen (most recently of “Parenthood). As to what could suck someone in to such a monster, well, Christensen says it’s complicated. “She’s on such a ride from the moment she meets Kent. She’s just in, hook, line and sinker, but she doesn’t know where she’s going. I think that she’s going to learn a lot about herself, Christensen explains. It seems hard to believe she could be so oblivious to the actions of her paramour, and Christensen says she may eventually work out what

Kent’s up to. “I think she has to at some point, and I don’t know how much she learns, how fast and how on board she’s going to be with it, she says. “But we have to start from the place of knowing that she is madly in love with this person. And Kent is pretty good at getting people to like him. “He’s everything she’s ever wanted in a man. He makes her feel comfortable in her own skin. He makes her feel sexy and wanted, and he offers an excitement that she doesn’t have in her life, Christensen says of her character. “She’s an abused person. She’s not been treated well. And so for someone to be a kind of Prince Charming for her, she’s going to follow him wherever he goes. It’s certainly a pretty drastic shift

in tone from the world of “Parenthood,â€? and Christensen jokes that she’s a little concerned about her fans. “Listen, I’ve been trying to warn them that this is not the same thing, but it should be a whole different kind of fun,â€? she says. For Christensen, it’s been a blast to explore a new kind of character. “I am loving seeing the twists and turns she takes. She’s learning so much about herself so fast in the course of these 11 episodes. And if we find out that she’s crazy — then I haven’t done that in a while, so that’s fun.â€? Might she be referring to her early turn as the deranged stalker of a cute classmate in the 2002 teen classic “Swimfanâ€?? “Yeah, getting back to my roots, there,â€? role of a good witch with “dreamwalkingâ€? powers who helps Vin Diesel’s immortal slayer stop a plot revolving around the villainous Queen Witch. But Leslie gets where the evil witch is coming from. Vin Diesel was instrumental in getting this made, based on his love of Dungeons & Dragons. That Vin Diesel is a D&D nerd is quite endearing. He has an extensive knowledge of D&D. I thought that would be a wonderful icebreaker when we met one another on set. But I was just out of my depth. There’s a whole language going on with D&D. Quite quickly, I was shut down and put back into my place, and rightly so. Was it jarring going from a pricey TV show like “Game of Thronesâ€? to a monumentally expensive movie like this? Do you know what? No. HBO,

they pack in so much time and, obviously, quality into their budgets; their standards are really incredibly high. I was mesmerized the first time I stepped onto “Thrones,â€? just by the location. But of course, if we’re talking other television programs, that would be a rather jarring gap. But with “Thrones,â€? it is of such high caliber that it didn’t differ that much. It seems the effects might be more extensive on something like this. Certainly I’ve never worked on a project before where there’s lots of green screen. And with “Witch Hunter,â€? there was a lot of green screen and me reacting to a tennis ball and trying to sell that. How do you sell that? I don’t know. I did it somehow.

WIRE IMAGE

‘Thrones’ vs. ‘Abbey’ I bet there’s a big dierence between “Game of Thronesâ€? fans and “Downton Abbeyâ€? fans. Yes, but they’re the same in the sense that they’re both as loyal and passionate about their show. These shows have been around for the same time, about ďŹ ve years. So far — knock on wood — I’ve never come across someone on either side where the fans haven’t been enamored of the piece. “Downton Abbeyâ€? heads, though, compared to “Thronesâ€? people, are probably more reserved. And dainty!

the Queen Witch as the main villain is a good thing. Obviously, visually she’s quite demonic. But watching the film, for the first time a couple of days ago, I was kind of leaning more toward the Queen. I realized, “S—, you’re right, girl. You were here first. You dominated the planet for so long, and then bloody mankind came in and messed it up. You’re taking what you believe is rightfully yours. I shouldn’t be leaning more toward her, but watching it I thought, “Holy s—, I never thought that when we were shooting it. But she has a point.

Stop treading water out of fear

Getting started is the hardest part, so don’t dive into the deep end before learning the basic strokes.

Ghouls and ghosts come around to scare us once a year on Halloween, but some people live with fears and anxieties that haunt them year-round. For these people, the possibility of failure or rejection is so scary that they would rather play it safe — even if that means enduring the suffering that is familiar and predictable — rather than take the necessary risks to change their lives. I’ve learned a lot about facing fear from a 30-year-old client who is just learning to swim. Regina grew up in the inner city, and despite her Caribbean heritage, was never enrolled in a swim class. Consequently, Regina grew up fearing the water and staying ashore during her many trips back to her homeland. When Regina started learning how to swim last year at a local pool, she was terrified of drowning — she simply did not trust the water to support her weight. Gradually, with the help of flotation devices, she began to venture into the deep end. Though she still has good days and bad days, she keeps showing up and is making progress. If you long to take risks but find yourself clutching the sides of your metaphorical pool, know that you don’t need to jump into the deep end right

and other social media can help you take charge of the situation.

Start slowly The goal is to stay afloat and move forward, not win an Olympic medal. Take small steps until you feel more comfortable. When necessary, tread water (take breaks) and use flotation devices (friends, loved ones, mentors, counselors) to keep your head above water.

Trust that the water will support you

away. Follow these basic swimming guidelines to ease your way into the waters of your own adventure.

Every undertaking requires a small leap of faith. Since we can’t predict the future, we have to trust that the universe will assist us if we are prepared and our efforts are aligned with our best intentions. Some might call this a spiritual perspective. For the more existential crowd, trusting the water is also about trusting yourself to relax and go with the flow.

Learn the strokes

Keep moving

When trying to push past fear, preparation is often half the battle. If you look in the right places, you can probably find tools and techniques that will help you move forward. Scared to change jobs? Learning how to write a proper résumé or making the most of LinkedIn

To make changes that feel scary, you only need to be slightly more courageous than you are fearful. Once you’ve taken the first step, it’s OK to feel the fear as long you keep moving your arms and kicking your feet. Change happens one stroke and kick at a time.

Amazin’ momentum The Mets will look to ride this wave all the way to a World Series title.

“He’s always been sound mechanically. But I think his approach is a little bit different, which has made him a more dangerous hitter.”

MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

If the Mets are to win it all in the next week or so, they will obviously be crowned baseball champions of 2015. The work they put in February and March during spring training will be hailed as a period in which the championship seeds were planted. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, we’ll know that Daniel Murphy and the rest of the Mets simply getting hot at the right time trumps any Port St. Lucie pepper session from a lazy Tuesday morning seven months ago. There is little correla-

tion from the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Nationals on April 6 to what will transpire in Tuesday night’s Game 1 of the

World Series in Kansas City (8:07 p.m., FOX), just as there is little correlation from the Mets’ five-game losing streak

that occurred at the end of September and beginning of October, to Tuesday night. What is most important is

whether or not Murphy will continue to look at a Major League baseball as though it’s the size of a beach volleyball. What is important is whether or not the Mets’ pitching staff continues to throw like it did during the NLDS and NLCS. It doesn’t take a wireto-wire effort anymore to win a World Series. Last year’s World Series champs — the San Francisco Giants — had a record of 88-74 in the regular season and went just 14-12 in September of that year. This year’s Mets didn’t quite flirt with 100 wins (they went

90-72) and at no point in the regular season were they viewed as an unstoppable juggernaut. Today, they do look unbeatable — even against a Royals team that won 95 regularseason games. The Mets have shut down opposing teams’ offenses in the postseason as they allowed an average of just 2.5 runs per game against the Dodgers and Cubs. But this time of year in baseball, all it takes is one off night to completely kill momentum. Matt Harvey will look to keep things rolling for the Mets in Game 1.

World Series Small market Royals looking to oust big, bad New Yorkers

Mets will need to continue their impressive postseason road work The Mets begin the 2015 World Series in the visitors dugout. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

Before the All-Star break this year, the Mets were a dreadful 15-28 on the road. They obviously made improvements across the board near the deadline, but the Mets’ 26-12 record in away games after the break is still mighty impressive. At one point in September, the Mets set a National League

record by scoring at least three runs in 31 straight games. They also won 11 straight road games in

September, setting a franchise record. All of this bodes well considering the Royals have home-field advantage in the World Series. Kansas City was one of the better home teams all season, going 51-30 in games played at Kauffman Stadium, but that advantage is somewhat mitigated by the Mets’ excellence away from Citi Field. “One of the discussions was going to Kansas City; they play well in their park,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “But we think we’ll run two pretty

good pitchers at them and hopefully get one or two [wins].” The Mets will go with their two aces, Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom, in Games 1 and 2 at Kauffman Stadium. The Mets are 4-1 on the road this postseason, winning Games 1 and 5 in Dodger Stadium in the NLDS, and winning Games 3 and 4 in Wrigley Field in the NLCS. Noah Syndergaard, who struggled on the road during the regular season (2-5, 4.23 ERA), made a quality postseason start in Dodger Stadium back on Oct. 10 (6.1 innings, five hits, three runs). He even pitched a scoreless inning in relief in Game 5 in Chavez Ravine. Syndergaard blamed his earlier road

struggles on bad luck. “To me, it’s just all about getting comfortable out there on the mound on the road,” he said. “I felt like my stuff was there. It’s just a series of bad events happened.” If the World Series goes seven games, Syndergaard could start the deciding game in Kansas City.

Forget about the Cubs. Any casual baseball fan wanting to cheer for a real underdog rather than a wealthy big city underachiever might want to disregard those so-called lovable losers from Chicago and embrace the Kansas City Royals. The franchise from the second-smallest metropolitan area in the majors and until last year without a postseason appearance since its lone World Series win in 1985, is back in the Fall Classic after falling to the Giants in seven games last year. That speaks volumes to the decision by owner David Glass to crack open the purse strings, hire a bright young general manager in Dayton Moore and let the Royals’ front office build a team capable of going all the way. Rated the third-leastvaluable franchise in the majors, with annual revenue less than half the New York Yankees, the Royals have been in the majors since 1969, as an expansion club to replace the Athletics team that left Kansas City for Oakland. In a sport where parity reigns, the Royals put together the best regular season record in the American League this year (95-67) as they followed up their Wild Card appearance in the playoffs last year by easily ruling the AL Central in 2015. Glass has not spent enough to satisfy all his critics, but this season’s opening-day payroll was a healthy $113 million — money well spent it would seem. The Royals have added this season to their pitching rotation by acquiring Dominican righthanders Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto, which helped soften the blow of losing last year’s free agent James Shields and Jason Vargas to a seasonending injury. Because the Mets will have to play at an American League park for at least two games in the 2015 World Series, they’ll need to figure out who their designated hitter will be. There are plenty of candidates, and it’s possible that the Mets will alternate designated hitters from game to game. Yoenis Cespedes has played left field and center field for the Mets since he was brought in at the deadline and has done so very well. He has a cannon for an arm, but because he tweaked his non-throwing shoulder in Game 4 of the NLCS, it’s possible that Mets skipper Terry Collins will treat the Cuban slugger with caution going into the series until he’s positive that Cespedes is healthy. Michael Conforto, who will likely see a lot of playing time as the Royals’ starters are all right-handed, is usually lifted by Collins late in games for Juan Lagares for defensive purposes (Conforto isn’t a bad defensive fielder but Lagares has a Gold Glove), so he seems like a logical candidate to be the DH. outfielders comes Michael Cuddyer, who has had a disappointing year for the Mets. He hasn’t seen much playing time since his blunders in the outfield early in the NLDS. Because the Mets will be seeing a lot of righties in this series, it looks like Cuddyer, 36, will be riding the pine most of the way. A fringe candidate for the DH spot is Juan Uribe, who has yet to play this postseason due to a chest injury. Uribe played a lot while David Wright was rehabbing, but his role was diminished once the team captain came back in late August. In 44 games as a Met, Uribe hit only .219 but had six home runs.
