STANFORD LOSES APPEAL PEANUT BUTTER RECALL

A U.S. appeals court rejected Texas financier Robert Allen Stanford’s bid to overturn his conviction and 110-year prison sentence for running what federal prosecutors called a $7.2 billion Ponzi scheme. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans turned aside 10 arguments raised by Stanford. These included that he was not competent to stand trial, the government did not prove its case, the sentence was too long, and the trial judge was biased toward prosecutors, including by denying him a lawyer of his choice. Lactating mothers with extra breast milk to donate can now do so at two locations: one on the Upper West Side and in Irvington in Westchester County. Five additional locations for the breast milk drop off, which is primarily donated to neo-natal intensive care units (NICUs) to help babies born premature or with health conditions, are expected in the near future by the organization, staffed solely by volunteer medical professionals. Right now, all the breast milk flowing into New York State hospitals are pasteurized and screened through Ohio and Massachusetts, said Roseanne R. BRIEFS Yonkers company behind scam charity donation bins to pay $700K A Yonkers-based company responsible for more than 1,100 clothing donation bins around the metropolitan area — including hundreds across the outer boroughs — will pay out $700,000 in a settlement. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman reached the agreement after his office accused Thrift Land USA of tricking residents to donate clothing in the company’s bins and then selling the donations for $10
million in profit. Carl Vella, who operated Thrift Land, would pay two nonprofits — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County and I Love Our Youth, Inc. — a small, monthly fee to use the names on the bins. Both nonprofits also settled with the attorney general. The agreement with Vella demands that he take off the charity names and disclose on his bins that the donations won’t go to charity. On top of a $50,000 fine, Vella

man’s office said. “When a for-profit company masquerades as a charity, my office will hold it and its owners accountable,” Schneiderman said in a statement. The New York City Council passed a law in 2014 that fines operators who place donation bins on public property, forcing them off city sidewalks. Bins on private property must still be registered to avoid fines. CHESTER SORIA

An electronic marquee that hangs below Fulton Center’s oculus has added several new shops to the growing list of businesses promised for the transit hub. Belgian chocolatier Neuhaus, iconic notebook provider Moleskin and Gateway Newstand have added their names to the list of retailers that will eventually fill the 66,000 feet of retail space. A spokeswoman for Neuhaus said the chocolate shop is set to open before the end of the year, though a date hasn’t been set. Fulton Center is currently without a permanent tenant after the popup Men’s Bar, which sold men’s skin care products, closed last week after a two-month
run. Organic popcorn shop Pop Karma is close to opening, the owner recently told Metro, and Irving Farm Coffee Roasters, Wasabi, Zaro’s and Shake Shack are slated to open in 2016. Gateway Newstands, a Canadian company that sells tobacco and newspapers, will open two locations at Fulton Center and one at the World Trade Center in December, said Noah Aychental, vice president of marketing and promotions. Gateway has 45 other newsstands in New York City. Moleskine, which opened a Grand Central location on Tuesday, will likely open up downtown in the spring or summer, according to a company representative. Leasing agency Westfield Group is not paying rent to the MTA, but will continue to pay operating expenses the MTA would otherwise be responsible for. Westfield expects store openings to start in the next few weeks, and 20 retail and food shops to open through 2016.

While New York City has made progress in helping New Yorkers move back into their homes through its federally funded program, local leaders said the situation is still very real the three years since Superstorm Sandy. “There so such thing as victory lap with Sandy, said Staten Island Borough President Jimmy Oddo. On Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city’s Build It Back program, despite hiccups inherited from the last administration, is on track to complete its goals by the end of 2016. The program reimburses homeowners affected by the storm for construction costs, including in some cases elevation of their houses. Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis told reporters she’s happy on behalf of her constituents in Staten Island that the city set a hard deadline. “I’m really pleased that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, she said.

Illinois man pleads guilty to trying to join Islamic State The case has highlighted the problem of young Americans and Europeans influenced by online propaganda by Islamic State. A 20-year-old Chicago-area man pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge of trying to provide support to Islamic State militants in exchange for prosecutors agreeing to seek a prison sentence of no more than five years. Mohammed Hamzah Khan told U.S. District Judge John Tharp that he had intended to travel to Syria to work for Islamic State, including taking a possible combat role, and acknowledged that he knew the U.S. government

considers the group a terrorist organization. Khan was 19 when he was arrested in October 2014 at O’Hare International Airport as he tried to travel to the Middle East with his siblings, then 17 and 16 years old. The U.S. also has tried to block recruiting, with investigators saying 80 percent of Americans linked to activities supporting militant movements have radicalized
themselves over the Internet. The maximum penalty in Khan’s case is 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine plus a long supervised release. But if he continues to cooperate with prosecutors — potentially providing insight into online recruiting — the government agreed to recommend a sentence of five years. Khan’s lawyer, Thomas Durkin, said he would seek a sentence of fewer than five years at sentencing early next year. Durkin said Khan was brainwashed by slick online propaganda and that while he understands why his client decided to plead guilty, he remains skeptical that prosecution is the answer to the wider problem. Ryan said in a speech after the vote that infighting in the Republicanmajority House had been counterproductive and added to the legislative gridlock in Washington. Newly elected U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday promised to sweep away Republican Party differences and repair a “broken” House of Representatives by returning legislative power to committees and rank-and-file members. Ryan won 236 votes among the chamber’s 247 Republicans to be elected speaker, abandoned by only a handful of conservatives who mounted repeated revolts that pushed out
his predecessor, John Boehner, who retired. “We’re not solving problems, we’re adding to them, and I am not interested in laying blame,” Ryan said. “We are not settling scores, we are wiping the slate clean,” Ryan added to applause. Ryan said the House would tackle tough issues, including reducing budget deficits and reforming taxes, saying this would help raise incomes and bring people out of poverty. The Wisconsin congressman said he would return control over drafting legislation to committees and rankand-file members, adding: “If you know the issue, you should write the bill.” Boehner’s practice of drafting major spending legislation in secret, often in negotiations

pushing his skateboard with his paws and riding around a concrete path at a beachside park, tilting his body to steer. The video has been seen more than 20 million times on YouTube and was featured in an early commercial for Apple Inc’s iPhone to demonstrate the videoplaying abilities of the device. Recognized for his light brown coat, white face and white chest, Tillman also appeared in the Hallmark channel’s reality television series “Who Let the Dogs Out.” In 2009, Tillman’s talents landed him a Guinness World Record as the fastest skateboarding dog after he rolled across 100 yards in 19.678 seconds at the X Games in Los Angeles. BRIEFS Year in jail for former US prep school student in sex assault trial A New Hampshire judge on Thursday sentenced a former student at an elite prep school to serve one year in jail for luring an underage classmate into a sexual encounter. Owen Labrie, 20, was convicted in August at the end of a high-profile trial that cast a harsh light on the culture of the elite St. Paul’s School and its tradition of a “senior salute,” in which final-year students invited underclassmen for sexual encounters. Labrie could be seen crossing himself in a gesture of prayer as he waited for Merrimack County Superior Court Judge Larry Smukler to issue his sentence, which was considerably less than the seven years prosecutors had sought. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. “This was not consensual,” Smukler said. “You did not take the time to get to know the victim.” The girl, who Reuters is not identifying, did not appear in court but gave a half-hour statement by video, saying she continued to struggle with the traumatic memory of the assault. “I don’t really know how to put one foot in front of another. I don’t want to feel imprisoned the rest of my life,” she said, speaking haltingly and at times through tears. “I want to be safe again, and I want justice.” Labrie was found not guilty of three counts of felony rape against the girl, who was a 15-year-old freshman at the
time of their encounter last year on the campus of their boarding school in Concord, New Hampshire. Prosecutors had argued that the victim accepted Labrie’s invitation for a “senior salute” in the final weeks of school but never intended to have sex with him. Labrie’s attorney, J.W. Carney, had argued that probation would be a more appropriate punishment than prison, noting that Labrie had already lost a full scholarship to Harvard University and that his name would forever be associated with the case. “Owen decided to engage in a ‘senior salute.’ He has tremendous remorse for doing what he did,” Carney said. “Owen looked to St. Paul’s to guide him and instead they misled him.” Carney said he would be appealing the decision, and the judge said Labrie would be allowed to remain free pending that appeal. The victim’s father, an alumnus of St. Paul’s, bashed what he called the school’s “entitled” culture. “My little girl stood up to this entitled young man, she stood up to the entitled culture at St. Paul’s, she stood up to the rape culture that exists in our society that allows boys to be boys and somehow says it is OK for men to do irreparable harm to girls,” he said, as Labrie sat staring straight ahead. St. Paul’s is one of the nation’s top prep schools, and its alumni include well-known figures in business and politics, including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. REUTERS

South Carolina church massacre detailed in newly released documents The accounts cited calls from a person inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and another who hid in an office in the church. Police logs released on Thursday revealed a chilling account of the June 17 massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, that killed nine people. “People shot down. ... They also knew the suspected shooter had fled out the church’s back door. Dylann Roof, 21, has been charged with murder and state prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Some media organizations who sued to get the documents made public said police went too far in blacking out names, comments and key details. A state judge this month lifted a gag or-
der placed on the evidence but decided that graphic crime scene photographs, audio of 911 emergency phone calls and other sensitive materials would remain sealed to protect the victims.
State prosecutor Scarlett Wilson said in a letter to media that further investigative reports would be withheld if her office decided they infringed on the privacy of the survivors and families of victims or could harm Roof’s right to a fair trial. The released documents said Roof was quiet and compliant when officers located him in Shelby, North Carolina, the morning after the massacre and pulled over his car about 10:30 a.m. When asked if he knew why he was detained, he nodded his head. A sergeant asked Roof if police should know about anything in his car. “Yeah, there’s a gun in the backseat,” Roof said, according to the report. REUTERS

China to allow couples with two children to counter the aging population The policy is a major liberalization of the country’s family planning restrictions, already eased in late 2013 when Beijing said it would allow more families to have two children when the parents met certain conditions.
“It’s an event that we have been waiting for a generation, but it is one we have had to wait much too long for.”
China will ease family planning restrictions to allow all couples to have two children after decades of a strict onechild policy, the ruling Communist Party said on Thursday, a move aimed at alleviating demographic strains on the economy. A growing number of scholars had urged the government to reform the rules, introduced in the late 1970s to prevent population growth spiraling out of control, but now regarded as outdated and responsible for shrinking China’s labor pool. For the first time in decades the working age population fell in 2012, and China, the world’s most populous nation, could be the first country in the world to get old before it gets rich. By around the middle of this century, one in every three Chinese is forecast to be over 60, with a
Shares of baby formula makers such as Mead Johnson Nutrition Co (MJN.N) and Danone SA (DANO.PA) rose on hopes for a surge in demand, although one analyst warned against an overreaction. “We would expect that this would have a positive impact on our pediatric business in China, assuming an increase in births,” said Scott Stoffel, a spokesman for Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N), the maker of Similac formula, which gets 10 percent of its global nutrition sales from China. Under the 2013 reform, couples in which one parent is an only child were allowed to have a second child. Critics said the relaxation of rules was too little, too late to redress substantial negative effects of the one-child policy on the economy and society. REUTERS

dwindling proportion of working adults to support them. The announcement was made at the close of a key Party meeting focused on financial reforms and maintaining growth between 2016 and 2020 amid concerns over the country’s slowing economy. China will “fully implement a policy of allowing each couple to have two children as an active response to an aging pop-
ulation,” the party said in a statement carried by the official Xinhua news agency. There were no immediate details on the new policy or a timeframe for implementation. Wang Feng, a leading expert on demographic and social change in China, called the change an “historic event” that would change the world but said the challenges of China’s aging society would remain.

Navy scrambled F-18 jets after Russian planes approached carrier: Official A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier scrambled four F-18 jets on Tuesday after two Russian anti-submarine aircraft flew within a nautical mile of the warship, a Navy official said on Thursday. News media reports said the incident occurred in international waters east of the Korean peninsula. A U.S. Navy official said two Russian TU-142 “Bear” aircraft flew within a nautical mile of the Reagan, prompting it to launch four F-18 fighter jets to escort the
planes away from the ship. The TU-145 Bear is a long-range anti-submarine warfare plane and a variant of the Tu-95 Bear strategic bomber. The Navy official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the pilots from both sides behaved professionally and the Tu-145s moved away from the U.S. carrier. Bradley Cooper gets down to business in “Burnt.” THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
wknd THE FUN STARTS HERE Bradley Cooper heads back into the kitchen as a volatile chef seeking redemption in “Burnt.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick
ned.ehrbar@metro.us
“Burnt” isn’t the first time Bradley Cooper has played a chef. He starred on the short-lived Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” — inspired by Anthony Bourdain’s exploits — some 10 years ago. This time, though, he’s taking on an even more volatile cook, with a reformed hard-partier inspired by Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing and Marco Pierre White going for his third Michelin star. I was actually a huge fan of “Kitchen Confidential.” In your mind, is there any sort of connection between the two? You know, it’s so different. The characters and the tone are so different. That was a half-hour single-camera comedy for Fox, and this is a feature
film. I never did feel a connection — I thought I would feel more, but I didn’t. When I got into the kitchen with this movie, it just felt like a completely different thing. It was just so real. How realistic of a kitchen setup are we talking? That’s a functioning kitchen. There were no cooking doubles. Every shot, that’s me doing it, for better or for worse. All the other extras that you see in the kitchen, those were all chefs who work in Michelin-starred restaurants. None of them were actors aside from my co-stars. The rest were all chefs. And we were making food. Each day, we would come into work, there would be orders that we would have that I would call out, and there would be food in the refrigerator ready to cook those meals, and we had to cook them. And they just rolled the camera. Then we had Marcus Wareing, who is a two-Michelinstarred chef who created all the dishes, overseeing everything for its authenticity behind the
monitor. So yeah, it really was unique in that way. Doing multiple takes of eating scenes can be rough, but what do you do when you’re cooking things over and over again? There’s a whole other kitchen behind our kitchen that was making all of the extra plates of food to be brought out. The minute it would be over, they would replenish everybody’s pan with the food, the steak, the fish so that I could plate it again. So how do you think you’d fare as a chef? The one thing I was aware of after doing this movie was how unequipped I am to be a chef. I thought I was much better than I was in terms of having worked in restaurants, having been a prep cook, having been a part of a brigade. When I was 18, I worked at a seafood and Italian restaurant in Somers Point, New Jersey, and cleaned 625 chickens in one day. It was insane, the stuff I had to do and be berated by chefs like
So long, Broadway Cooper
You also wrapped up your theatrical run of “The Elephant Man” in London’s West End and on Broadway. Any plans for more stage work in your future? Oh man, I don’t know. That
that. But that pales in comparison to this level of perfection, this level of accuracy, this level of pursuit for perfection. And it’s real. Doing research with Gordon Ramsay — who opened up his whole world to me, really — him and Marcus, those were the guys who really showed me how it’s done. Where do you think this reputation of chefs being so volatile comes from? I think the rock star idea, the iconic chef, really originated with Marco Pierre White. There was a cookbook that came out called “White Heat” where the photographer had taken these badass photos of him, and then “Boiling Point” was a documentary the BBC

did about Gordon Ramsay going after his third Michelin star, and it was the first time anyone had ever agreed to let cameras go behind the scenes in the kitchen of that level of a restaurant. And that’s where it all sort of started. You realized how intense and high-octane that world is.

Speaking Spanish with Zoe Kazan The actress talks playing funny in “Our Brand Is Crisis” and her history with a second language. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Zoe Kazan tends to play serious or, if it’s a rom-com like “What If,” quasi-serious. But in “Our Brand Is Crisis,” she gets to play LeBlanc, a character whose primary function is as a comic foil. LeBlanc is the crafty right-hand person of Sandra Bullock’s political adviser, who’s lent her services out to a probably crooked Bolivian pol (Joaquim de Almeida), whose political race isn’t going so well. It’s based on a 2005 doc of the same name, though it’s been fashioned into a satirical comedy that milks laughs out of Ugly Americans foisting Amer-

ican ideals upon other countries. LeBlanc is unusual for you because she’s mostly a comedic character. That was part of it — the idea of getting to play this enigma. I had also accidentally done a lot of romantic comedies. I was just tired of that genre. I liked the idea of being able to do something about a bunch of people using their minds, and there was getting to
speak Spanish in a movie. It’s a language I grew up speaking, which I never get to use. How did you wind up growing up speaking Spanish? My mom was a Navy brat, and their family was stationed in Barcelona for a portion of her childhood. My mom spoke Spanish. And then my parents are both writers and worked full-time seven days a week. So
they hired this woman to come and not nanny me, but raise me. I became incredibly close to her. And she doesn’t speak any English. So I grew up speaking Spanish with her. Given your character primarily serves as a translator, I assume your grasp of the language is what got you the role. I auditioned for the part. I had to improvise in Spanish in the audition.
I think everyone thought I was much better at Spanish than I actually am. My accent is good; it fools people.
Zoe (doesn’t) go to the movies
This is technically a political film, but it’s more along the lines of “Veep” or “In the Loop,” where it’s not a specific party that’s being criticized but the game itself. I don’t think there are overt politics to the film, and I think that notion is partly what the movie is about. These people are people who are working in the political field who are not doing it because they’re passionate about this or that cause. It’s because they’re passionate about winning. In that way, it could be any industry in which there are winners and losers. GETTY IMAGES
It’s rare these days to have a studio film like this that is about ideas. There are enough films that are interesting and worth our time that don’t get a sufficient run in the theater, or they do get out there and we just don’t manage to make it to see them. ... I can’t remember the last time I went to the theater. I mean, I haven’t seen “Sicario” yet. It’s exactly the kind of movie I say I want to see: a movie that’s about something, that has a strong female role. And then it’s like, “Oh, it’s in theaters right now.” That’s shame on me.

‘Crisis’ is a political film more goofy than heavy-handed
“Burnt”
Director: John Wells Stars: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller Rating: R
•••••
“Burnt” is simple, obvious, even lazy … but it has food. The camera pushes in close on fish frying in pans, on seasoning being daintily sprinkled over choice cuts, on the clatter-clatter-clatter of wooden spoons banging around inside a pot over dancing flames. If you’re a gourmand — which is to say you like staring at edibles you can’t eat on screens as much as you like actually consuming them — then the food-porn genre, like the submarine movie or film noir or the cinema of Cary Grant, is one whose wares always get at least a pass. Good thing, too, because “Burnt” is familiar in more ways than one. Bradley Cooper plays Adam Jones, once a superstar chef destroyed by ego and drugs, now seeking one of those nice movie redemptions. He’s a lot like Anthony Bourdain. In fact he’s so like Bourdain the actor has already been him (or, rather, “Jack Bourdain”), on the short-lived TV show “Kitchen Confiden-

tial.” Adam isn’t Bourdain-fun, though. As he rebuilds in London, installing himself in a new kitchen and seeking that always elusive third Michelin star, he all-caps shouts and throws pans and sweats spinal fluid when handsome dishes aren’t next-level. He upbraids no-nonsense sous-chef Helene (Sienna Miller) by saying, “You lack arrogance” and betrays his towering artistry by saying things like “Consistency is death.” It’s not even worth pointing out that “Burnt” is consistently predictable — basically comfort food, only with a soupcon of grit. Director John Wells (“Au-
gust: Osage County”) shoots in hand-held, and talented writer Steven Knight (“Eastern Promises,” “Locke”) doesn’t ease up on the antisocial tirades. But Adam is mostly charming-unpleasant, and he’s guaranteed a happy ending. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Occasionally succumbing to something basic like “Burnt” can be rewarding, even as it tries to rough things up with swearing and bad behavior and a charismatic but sometimes too self-serious lead acting his heart out. “Burnt” seems to think it’s a radical new twist on risotto. In truth it’s closer to a lightly spiced-up mac-and-cheese. MP

Sandra Bullock and Ann Dowd play political campaign players trying to ignore that they’re probably ruining Bolivia in “Our Brand Is Crisis.” WARNER BROS. PICTURES
MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Disarmingly fun for a George Clooney-produced movie based on a sobering political documentary, “Our Brand Is Crisis” is a movie that allows you to catch a ride with monsters. Sandra Bullock plays “Calamity” Jane Bodine, an infamous campaign consultant lured out of calm, boring, nicotinefree retirement to help an incumbent Bolivian president (Joaquim de Almeida) suffering a disastrous re-election. She and her team don’t bother seeing if he’s a good man. (He isn’t.) And they think nothing of foisting American-style electioneering upon another nation. Things are bound to get serious, but the
middle hour-and-change belong to director David Gordon Green, the chameleon of the Malickian “George Washington” but also multiple weed comedies, like “Pineapple Express.” Green is mostly having a blast, not just reveling in bad behavior but going along for the ride. Our antiheroes squee with every poll point bump, and are soon reduced to rampaging teenagers, drunkenly vandalizing their opponents’ swanky hotel digs and even mooning them after a big score. Bullock brings the same spunky, clownish verve she’s long brought to fizzy rom-coms to a film in which our heroes spin Machiavellian lies to an entire country. The good times have to end, and by good times we mean Ameri-
cans obliviously wreaking untold havoc upon another country. Thanks to Bullock’s infectious glee, we’re made to laugh when they laugh, cheer when they cheer and generally get caught up in the mayhem. We might even forget that what they’re doing is terrible, and only too late realize that what we’ve been enjoying is the ensuring of a tyrant’s reign. The last act puts too fine a point on this. Imagine if Michael Ritchie’s “The Candidate,” an obvious inspiration, went on long after its iconic punchline, trailing Robert Redford’s vacuous pol as learns the true meaning of honoring the people. It still can’t ruin what has been a goofy lark, which is better than another heavy-handed messagemongerer anyway.

“A POWERFUL, 3-D art-porn ‘Love’ IMPORTANT, will get a rise out of you TIMELY FILM.” Scott Mantz, Access Hollywood
‘Love’ Director: Gaspar Noe Stars: Karl Glusman, Aomi Muyock Rating: NR
•••••
Karl Glusman and Aomi Muyock play a couple who don’t often leave the bedroom in Gaspar Noe’s “Love.” ALCHEMY MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
The first thing you notice in “Love” is the male lead’s schlong. Specifically, that it’s no prosthetic. The opening of Gaspar Noe’s latest provocation finds actor Karl Glusman actually being serviced while he actually returns the favor on his female co-star, Aomi Muyock, all of it comin’ at ya in firstrate 3-D. Their roundelay lasts something like five minutes — long enough for time to evaporate. There will be many scenes like this over Noe’s art-porn epic, each one simulating the way sex creates a vacuum, shuttering its players from the rest of the world. The second thing you notice is that our lead
male is a total dum-dum. Glusman’s Murphy is looking back on his tumultuous, sex-filled relationship with Electra (Muyock), and he’s always filling the soundtrack with a powerfully banal voiceover. Sometimes he just says what he’s doing: “I’m really stoned now.” Sometimes he’s wincingly earnest: “Please, Electra, come back. Come back. Come back.” It’s annoying at first, then funny, then eventually endearing, even unique. Intelligence-wise, Murphy is slightly below the norm, and having a stupid hero becomes as perverse as the actual perversities that fill Noe’s marathon running time. He has so little on his mind — so few abilities beyond boning — that he becomes a blank slate
upon which we can project ourselves, maybe do our own reflecting on old failed loves. “Love” works that way too. Noe wants to create an inviting experience — a space for us to not just play voyeur to the fleshy bodies cavorting onscreen but to engage with them by disappearing into our own memories. It wants to re-create the blissful narrow-mindedness of being dumb in love. Of course, we know this because Noe, as in “Irreversible” and “Enter the Void,” puts the themes right in the dialogue. It’s a dum-dum film too, but in a way that makes it easier to give in to it. Get past the shock of the real sex — easy since there’s so much of it — and you have something close to a virtual reality trip. It’s stupid and obvious but also serene and melancholic — an “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” with more threesomes.

Getting in the end zone key in daily fantasy
METRO.US WEEKEND, OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 1, 2015
22 SPORTS
NFL
Whether you have dreams of winning a million dollars or beating your friends in a tournament, the best way to get paid is finding those players with the best chance of finding pay dirt. The goal is to target a player who is frequently used in the red zone against a defense that has been burned by a particular position. Knowing these trends should help you pick out those players with the best chances of scoring.
Raiders no easy ‘W’ for Jets It’s bounce-back time for the New York Jets, who went into Foxborough last week and played very well in a 30-23 loss to the Patriots. The Jets showed that they can compete with one of the top teams in the league but that they are not quite there yet. They’re a team that has vastly improved from last year’s 4-12 campaign, but are still in need of some tinkering. In Sunday’s opponent, there is an Oakland Raiders team that is also on the right track (4:05 p.m., CBS). The Raiders are 3-3 with a good, solid core of young players. In a division that is rapidly getting old, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Oakland on the ascend and challenging for an AFC West title soon.
Running backs TODD GURLEY ($8,100) At this point, how can you not start Gurley? He has eight red-zone rushing attempts this year, including three in Week 7, with two ending up as touchdowns. He has also had at least 19 carries for 128 yards in three straight games. He has a great chance of staying hot this week against a Niners defense that has allowed 113 rushing yards per game and seven rushing touchdowns to opposing RBs. DOUG MARTIN ($7,500), JUSTIN FORSETT ($6,900), CHARCANDRICK WEST ($6,600), JONATHAN STEWART ($6,600)
Wide receivers JULIO JONES ($9,200) Julio has not broken 100 yards in four straight games, but he did score against the Titans, snapping his streak of three games without finding the end zone. His 12 red zone targets are by far the most on the Falcons, and he’s seen double-digit targets in all but one game. CALVIN JOHNSON ($8,600), KEENAN ALLEN ($8,000), STEFON DIGGS ($6,700), DORIAL GREEN-BECKHAM ($4,900)
Tight ends TYLER EIFERT ($6,000) Eifert’s nine red zone targets are tied with A.J. Green for the team lead, although six of his have culminated in touchdowns. He has a great matchup this week against the Steelers, who have been burned by tight ends, allowing 44 receptions, 465 yards and six touchdowns. TRAVIS KELCE ($5,900), BENJAMIN WATSON ($5,400), AUSTIN SEFERIANJENKINS ($5,200)
Noah Syndergaard needs to continue his hot postseason play for the Mets to climb back into the series. GETTY IMAGES
It’s Noah or never The Mets desperately need rookie Noah Syndergaard to come up big at Citi Field Friday. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us
Down 0-2 to the Royals after two crushing losses at Kauffman Stadium, the Mets desperately need to pick up a win as the World Series moves to Citi Field. Kansas City had the answers for Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom, now the Mets turn to rookie Noah Syndergaard to get on the board in the Fall Classic. Syndergaard turned in a decent start against the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLDS (6.1 innings, three runs, five hits, four walks), then pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Game 5. “Thor” picked up the win in Game 2 of the NLCS against the Cubs, his last appearance, surrendering only one run on three hits and a walk in 5.2
innings. David Wright told reporters this week that he believes Syndergaard will turn in another good start. “[Syndergaard’s] throwing the ball as well as anybody in the playoffs,” he said, “I think when you have that type of stuff and the command he has shown especially in the playoffs, you should have a lot of confidence.” Despite the Royals making contact early and often on Harvey and deGrom (just four strikeouts combined for them in Games 1 and 2), pitching coach Dan Warthen told the New York Post that the Mets won’t back down from challenging K.C.’s hitters. “Noah is going to come out, he’s going to pound the zone,” he said. “If we hit and catch and do the things that we’re supposed to do, we have a good chance to win.” Syndergaard himself was a bit more subdued when asked by the press about facing Kanas City. “I’m really excited
Top heavy Lucas Duda, hitting out of the 5-hole in Game 2, was the only Mets batter able to solve Johnny Cueto — registering New York’s only two hits. The Mets’ 1-5 hitters have totalled 10 hits so far in the series but the 6-9 hitters have just three.
about Friday’s start,” he said before later adding, “[but] it’s just another game.” The change in venue is particularly meaningful for Syndergaard, as he is 7-2 at home with a 2.46 ERA, compared to his road splits of 2-5 with

a 4.23 ERA. Hitters are averaging just .196 facing him at Citi Field compared to .258 anywhere else. The Mets will face Royals fireballer Yordano Ventura on Friday night. Ventura, who at one point during the summer was briefly demoted, has made four starts in the postseason so far and has yet to complete six innings in a start. He has a 5.09 ERA in those four starts, so the Mets would hope that they have a little more luck against him than they did with Johnny Cueto in Game 2. Ventura, now in his second year in the majors, has been known to have a fiery personality to match his ferocious fastball. But he has apparently been calmer since that aforementioned demotion. Royals’ manager Ned Yost described it as, “a light-switch moment for him.” Ventura had poise to spare when he pitched twice in the 2014 World Series against the Giants, allowing just two runs in 12.1 innings.
The Black Hole – Oakland Coliseum is not an easy place to play. It’s an old stadium with no plush amenities and there is a baseball diamond right in the middle of the field that, even when covered up with turf, is still a mess to play on. And then there are the Raiders fans, who have a reputation for being a tad bit, ahem, “rowdy.” “I played in Denver, so I’ve battled against them a few times. That’s my favorite stadium to play in,” Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall said. “Every time before the game, I’ll run to the Black Hole and I’ll just stare at them and mean mug them and they just throw stuff at you. It’s fun. It’s great football.” No Ivory, No Cry – A quadriceps injury to running back Chris Ivory should, in theory, limit the Jets offense. Ivory after all is the team’s leading rusher with 501 yards and also leads the Jets with four rushing touchdowns. But even as Ivory was limited against the Patriots last week, the Jets passing offense stepped up. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns, his first game of the regular season without an interception. Hanging with Cooper – It is next to impossible to shut down Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper, at least that is what the San Diego Chargers are likely to say after last week’s game. The rookie first round pick had five catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in spearheading a Raiders win. Cooper is looking the part of a big-time, big-play wide receiver and the attention he will receive from the Jets might evidence just that. He might just get a trip to “Revis Island” this weekend. Things to watch for as the Giants take on the Saints Winning at New Orleans has never been easy for the G-Men. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Giants’ struggles at the SuperDome have been much publicized over the years, as they’ve been blown out by an average score of 48-25 in their last two meetings there. The Giants (4-3) will need to do whatever it takes to exorcise the voodoo that’s possessed them during trips to the Big Easy, as the Saints (34) are on a roll and looking for their third-straight win. The Giants are in sole possession of first place in the NFC East, but it’s a slim margin, with the Redskins and Eagles each at 3-4.

ODELL RIGHT AT HOME
Odell Beckham Jr. is returning to his native Louisiana for the first time as a professional, so look for the electric wideout to try and put on a show. The former LSU star said he’s trying to make this game feel like any other game, but deep down, he must be itching
to make his mark in the SuperDome. “You want the chance to play in that stadium,” Beckham said. “They’re a chaotic team [and] they play very much like their atmosphere -- a wonderful place it is to play. I’m definitely excited about it. Just being able to go back home where you grew up, not far from the house, [where] the stadium is only 15 minutes away. I’m definitely excited to go back.” Beckham was shut down by the Cowboys, last week, when he only registered four catches for 35 yards. But he is back to practicing fully this week, after missing most of the practices in the previous two weeks and being limited when he did work.

JPP’S BACK, KIND OF
Jason Pierre-Paul won’t be in uniform on Sunday, but he may be allowed to travel with the team, just to, as head coach Tom Coughlin stated, keep him in a competitive environment. “Our D-line is more complete now,” defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins said. “It’s been great having him back. He’s back with the group, and
now it’s just a matter of waiting until he’s game ready.”

BREES-ING THROUGH
Saints quarterback Drew Brees seems to be back on track following his early season slump. He’s outdueled Matt Ryan of the Falcons and Andrew Luck of the Colts in successive weeks, as New Orleans is riding a season-high two-game winning streak. Brees has thrown for 567 yards and two touchdowns in that span, while completing 66 percent of his throws. He’s hot, and history suggests that a hot Brees is a dangerous one, especially at home. The Giants will still be without the services of cornerback Prince Amukamara (pectoral), so look for Brees to attack his replacement, Jayron Hosley. The third-year corner has played pretty well in Amukamara’s place, but that was against the likes of a Sam Bradford and Matt Cassel. Brees is on his way to the Hall of Fame, and has amassed ridiculous numbers picking on even the best cornerbacks in the league, so it’s almost a given that he’ll test Hosley and a bangedup Giants secondary.
