BRIEFS Former Stuyvesant High teacher gets 15 years for part in smuggling ring A former Stuyvesant High School teacher has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a firearms and drug smuggling ring he believed was funding the Hamas terrorist group. Theophilis “Mike” Burroughs, 54, was arrested in 2010 after a yearlong investigation by the Bronx DA’s office and the state
tax department. Burroughs arranged to sell 13 guns and 27,000 cartons of untaxed cigarettes to undercover agents he believed were connected to Hamas. Burroughs pleaded guilty to charges of criminal sale of a firearm, money laundering, tax evasion and conspiracy in exchange for a 10-year sentence in 2013. He later withdrew the guilty plea, but then took a plea last month that resulted in a
longer sentence. Roper was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to yield to Bell. A judge revoked his license and set bail at $25,000. Cops rally vs. contract About 1,000 union members shouted across the street from the Upper East Side home of the negotiation’s lead arbitrator Howard Edelman. CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria

Shouts and chants from about 1,000 members and supporters of the city’s largest police union boomed down York Avenue in Manhattan on Thursday morning. Signs peppered down the block bemoaned $15-an-hour raises for fast-food workers, asked Upper East Siders who they’d call “when crime goes up” and attacked Mayor Bill de Blasio. “De Blasio sucks” chants were squeezed between others that included “Raise our wage,” and “Our lives matter,” as bus operators, sanitation workers and ambulance drivers blasted their horns and sirens in solidarity. Led by Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch, the firebrand union chief batted away questions of a slowdown while emphasizing how disappointed he was with the latest news over their stalled contract negotiations. “We’re going to continue to show how insulted and demoralized the New York City Police Department is,” Lynch told Metro. “We want this arbitra-
tor to do his job like New York City police officers do each and every day.” The arbitrator in question, Howard Edelman, was brought by the state to lead a panel to help settle a new contract for the PBA’s members after the last expired in 2010. Metro was unable to reach Edelman for comment, and it was unclear whether he was at the Upper East Side apartment. The PBA opted to go into arbitration after hitting a wall with the de Blasio administration and the formula it devised to address seven years’ worth of back pay and raises. A draft agreement circulated earlier on Nov. 2 would give the PBA’s 24,000 members retroactive raises of 1 percent covering two years. The PBA is the only one of the city’s four police unions to reject the administration’s rubric. One 26-year-old PBA member who only identified himself as Chris told Metro he hadn’t seen anything like Thursday’s rally before. Their endgame, he said, was a salary that a working man or woman can take care of a family with. “With rents, you can’t even afford to save for down payment on a house these days,” he said, adding he joined the force two years ago. “The city wants cops in the neighborhoods, and it needs cops in the neighborhoods. On Tuesday, the mayor declined to comment on reports of the draft agreement.

A day after City Hall endorsed legislation for a separate department to serve the city’s veterans, nonprofit Urban Pathways opened a new housing complex for veterans in the Morrisania neighborhood in the south Bronx. The 43-bed facility, which is fully furnished and will cost residents $500 a month, should be filled with homeless or low-income veterans within 120 days, said Frederick Shack, CEO of Urban Pathways. The organization is screening eight veterans they hope to have moved in by the end of November. One of those veterans will be Gloria Montes, a retired military police sergeant who has lived at a nearby Urban Pathways building for the last year. “It was both an honor and a privilege to serve this nation,” Montes said. Montes said after she was honorably discharged she had a great job and apartment for many years, but eventually fell on “hard times,” and was evicted. “After months of sleeping on the floor of friends’ apartments, or in my car, I knew I needed help,” Montes said. “I needed help to take care of myself mentally and physically.

… I needed to find a safe place to live and a safe place for my dogs.” The rooms in the new seven-story complex smelled like fresh paint and were decorated with bright colors on Thursday. The apartments overlook Boston Road and a courtyard where Urban Pathways has a complex of buildings and a community garden. Eventually, the facility will house 30 homeless and 13 low-income veterans. The building received its certificate of occupancy on Wednesday, the same night Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Loree Sutton threw their support behind a City Council
bill to set up a separate department. The council is expected to vote on the bill next week. “The Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs was established in 1987 by Mayor Edward Koch, himself a veteran,” Sutton said. “Over these almost-30 years since MOVA was established, mayors on both sides of the aisle kind of just let it languish until this mayor,” Sutton said. De Blasio has pledged to end veteran homelessness by the end of the year. According to the nightly city homeless report on Nov. 4, there were 57,486 homeless people staying in New York City shelters, and 348 of them were veterans in short-term housing. Sutton later told Metro the city has about 800 homeless veterans — down from about 16,000 when de Blasio took office — and just 11 veterans are street homeless. “We know who they are, and if they want to come in out of the cold, we’re ready to get them placed,” Sutton said.

Like the Cha-Cha Slide, the Harlem Shake, the Dougie or any other dance craze, right now a new step is all the rage in the presidential polka. It’s called the “Walk Back.” So if you want to stay cool with the political hepcats, listen up, it goes like this: Put your hands on your hips, throw out your chest, say something provocative/strong/or just plain wrong, and then quickly back away as if you didn’t really mean it at all. The “D.C. Dancers” (or if you prefer, the “Rotunda Rockettes”) love this move because it allows them to grab huge headlines by attacking opponents, quoting questionable research, and raising utterly unsubstantiated charges; then, faster than the fact checkers can pin them down, they can issue “clarifications” and “follow ups” that take them completely off of the hook. Many of the candidates have added the move to

their regular routines. “Look at that face!” Donald Trump famously said as he attacked Carly Fiorina. “Would anyone vote for that?” Then as women howled, he walked it back: “I’m talking about persona. I’m not talking about looks.”
President Obama was asked on “60 Minutes” about Hillary Clinton’s private email server and said, “I don’t think it posed a national security problem.” But when reporters pointed out that the FBI was still investigating, his staff cut in and changed the tune, saying the president was merely “making an observation about what we know so far.” This week even the Supreme Leader of Iran walked back that old favorite chant of the angry mobs, “Death to America!” Turns out, he says, they really just want death to American policy and maybe an occasional paper cut. For all its popularity, I’m not a fan of the Walk Back. Too often it seems like a cover up for stupidity, deceit, and cheap shots. No, I prefer an even older move called “Walk It Like You Talk It.” But honestly, you don’t see that around here much these days.

James Bond: Then and now
The best Bond film? “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was once the biggest outlier in the Bond franchise. It’s the first one without Sean Connery (before he returned for one more, “Diamonds Are Forever”). It’s the one with the not-very-liked George Lazenby. It’s the first one that was really violent. It’s the one with the dark, dark, dark ending. Over the decades, it’s become the one the cool kids prefer. But it’s also a first-rate Bond movie, filled with all the tropes in addition to a deeper sense of tragedy. And Lazenby is quite good — too chipper at times but tough. And he absolutely nails the final scene.

Toni Collette: It would be superfun to play a superhero On “Miss You Already,” the Oscar nominee found herself having fun making a movie about death.
On death and dying
MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
matt.prigge@metro.us
Toni Collette is no stranger to one of the rarest kinds of movies: films about female friendships. “Muriel’s Wedding” is about two friends, one (Rachel Griffiths) who is diagnosed with cancer. The same thing happens in “Miss You Already,” with Collette as the one who turns ill. She’s Milly, an extrovert whose struggle with disease brings her even closer to her longtime bestie, Jess (Drew Barrymore). It sounds like it would be a bummer to make, but Collette says it was a blast — at least up to a point. How much time did you get with Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette play besties trying to cope when the latter’s character is diagnosed with cancer in “Miss You Already.” ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS
to establish that long, deep connection? Not much, actually. We had five rehearsal days. Prior to that, we’d written to each other. We both loved the script; we both admired each other. So we just went for it. And luckily we just loved each other. We got on like a house on fire. The more time we hung out, the better we got. That just infused the film with something very real because you can’t always fake chemistry. But we got lucky.
Films about female friendship seem to be rare, though you’ve done your fair share. I’ve been pretty lucky. “Muriel’s Wedding” was the second film I ever did, and that’s what that film is about. And in “In Her Shoes” and “The United States of Tara,” we’re sisters but friends as well. So it hasn’t been that rare. Although when this film came along, it felt like it had been a while. It felt rare in 2014. This is dealing with a
grim subject, but it seems like it was fun to make. That’s part of the spirit of the piece, which is very lifeaffirming and more celebratory than sad. It was also because of the budget. There was no chance

You’re also dealing with mortality. Did you wind up reading a lot of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and about the five stages of death? I don’t need to. I’m a Scorpio. I think about it a lot. [Laughs] It was very cathartic for me. I have two friends who have died from cancer, and I’ve had friends who have fought it,
and they’re still alive. I didn’t want to get it wrong. It’s both frightening and liberating when you find out you don’t have as much time as you’d thought you did to live your life. We come from something, and we exit to the same place, and it always seems more infinite than this small, temporary window and this small, temporary body.
of anyone running off and finding their solitude. We were all hunkered down on set. That gave it a personal, intimate feeling. When you’re hanging out with people for 15 hours a day, a lot of humor comes out of that. You
get to know people in a different way. It’s not like working in an office, where you might have a little conversation every day. It’s hours on end. You haven’t done many big movies, where everyone’s more segregated. You haven’t done any superhero movies. I think it’d be superfun to be a superhero. I’m not averse to any particular budget. I’m just averse to a s—ty story. [Laughs] I don’t care about the budget; it’s about the quality.

The thing about the Bond movies is that most of them are just fine — spotty, often noticeably stupid bursts of incidental pleasures coasting on a film franchise that’s now 53 years young. That’s where “Spectre” falls. We’ve been trained by the Daniel Craig era to expect extremes. They’ll either be one of the very best (“Casino Royale,” “Skyfall”) or one of the very worst (“Quantum of Solace”). “Spectre” may look and act like it’s another Craig brooder, told with funereal heaviness by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes and featuring a minimum of quippage by its pissedoff star. But at its heart, it’s another dopey Roger Moore outing, minus the jokes about his ween.

‘The Peanuts Movie’
Director: Steve Martino Voices of: Noah Schnapp, Bill Melendez Rating: G
••••• A movie of Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” could go the lowest common denominator cash-cow
most misjudged. But the rest is a mashup of the classic and the new, sometimes incoherently. The Bond girl, Lea Seydoux’s Dr. Madeleine Swann, is a feisty loner one minute then a damsel in distress the next. Mendes’ direction is meticulous, but the pageantry just makes it easier to notice how dumb and incoherent the story gets. Heavy as it is, “Spectre” still winds up fine junk cinema — pricey,
lovingly orchestrated mayhem amid a globetrotting story you can half follow, if you want to at all. There’s a slowly escalating Day of the Dead opener, a smackdown with Dave Bautista and a funny/harrowing torture bit that plays like the rat-cage-mask from “1984” but with needles. “Spectre” will be a fine way to kill a Thanksgiving Day, when TNT crams it between “Octopussy” and “You Only Live Twice.”
route and be another “Smurfs” or an “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” It could also go the other way: be a slavish re-creation of the storied TV specials that started running in the 1960s. Improbably, “The Peanuts Movie” goes full-on for the latter. Digital makeover and all, it seeks to play exactly like several old, only slightly refurbished TV specials stitched together. It pretty much gets there too. The film is basically plotless, drifting from episode to episode, most of them related to baldie depresso Charlie Brown and his shy pursuit of the fabled Little Red-Haired Girl. What follows is not a very 2015 movie.
“Peanuts” can be too meandering and shapeless, but there is enough shape there, mostly tied to Charlie Brown’s hill-and-dale moods and realizing his powerful mediocrity. The modest tragedy of Charlie Brown, after all, is that he’s not special — or, as he poetically puts it, he’s “an insecure, wishy-washy failure.” The movie could stew a little more in his sadness, be a little loopier, maybe dream up some sillier misadventures for the other characters. Then again, you get the sense of a rich microcosm that’s only beginning to be explored again — though you don’t have to be too cynical to suspect the sequels won’t be this bold. MP

Director: Tom McCarthy Stars: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton Rating: R
•••••
An all-star cast plays Boston Globe staffers investigating the Catholic Church scandals in 2001 in “Spotlight.”OPEN ROAD FILMS
A lean, focused, no-nonsense paean to the importance of journalism, “Spotlight” makes its case through hard facts, not sanctimonious speeches. The subject is one of journalism’s greatest hits: The Boston Globe’s investigation, from 2001 to 2002, of the Catholic
Church abuse scandal. It’s not about the Church itself, whose members barely make an appearance. Instead it’s a look at process — the most OCD portrayal of the gruntwork of investigating since “Zodiac.” Just about everything that isn’t about work falls by the wayside. Occasionally details about reporters’ home lives creep in, but they tend to be germane to this calm and collected and respectful study of workaholism. At one point Mark Ruffalo’s journo is seen living in a sparsely-decorated
fleabag apartment, the result of separating from his wife. “I’ve been busy,” he disinterestedly explains about patching things up, 95 percent of his attention still on work. This isn’t some fawning movie ode to reporting. It’s in deep right along with its characters. There are a lot of eerie contrasts with the current apocalyptic days of newspapers, and “Spotlight” does exist in part to remind audiences of today of how rigorous, supported journalism practiced by people getting a
15
working wage can get stuff changed. But it doesn’t oversell its case. It’s very indebted to “All the President’s Men,” complete with an ending that cuts out as the aftermath is just beginning to be felt. But it’s more than mere imitation. It gets not only why what’s being reported mattered, but also that there are few pleasures quite like watching people who are great at doing almost nothing but. Most important of all, it also knows there are few things more distracting than bad Boston accents. MP
‘Miss You Already’ takes a very English approach to dying

In the last year, it’s been gutting watching a rarely livelier Julianne Moore pass on, mentally in the Alzheimer’s drama “Still Alice” and physically in the otherwise dodgy “Freeheld.” “Miss You Already” has a similar painful hook: You get to behold as Toni Collette, at her most spirited, slowly succumbs to cancer. On the plus side, at least it’s British. The film is very English about looming death, meaning every grim development is caked in gallows humor — jokes deployed not to ignore tragedy but to defy it. “Miss You Already” has another way of
softening the blow. It’s also a portrait of longtime female friendship. Collette’s Milly has Jess (Drew Barrymore), her American bestie since childhood. They actually don’t get a ton of shared screen time, but that makes sense: This is a funny-tough film about not just cancer but the messy segue into adulthood and responsibility, when home life and kids (or in Jess’ case, pregnancy) rob you of facetime with friends and anything else you once might have enjoyed. The screenplay teems with lived-in details and refreshing insights, especially amongst the disease movie genre. Among the best is Milly’s worrying over no longer being considered an attractive physical specimen, especially after she undergoes a mastectomy. The film is right along with her. It’s understandable that it occasionally turns stock. Milly and Jess suffer through the requisite endof-second-act falling out, though at least it’s over a real complaint. It has the power of its convictions, and it also has Toni Collette.

Arepas get Chipotle treatment Our picks of the restaurants and bars to check out this weekend. EVA KIS @thisiskis

Like other street fair foods, arepas are the kind of greasy calorie bomb you should only drop in your gut on special occasions. But when you shake up the frozen corn cake-andmozzarella model with Guayanes cheese encased in spinach, oatmeal and chia-flaxseed arepas in addition to corn, you’ve got the makings of a daily indulgence. Venezuelan native Monica Muzzo opened Arepa Factory this week to give the dish a modern, tradition-meets-New York makeover with a Chipotle-style ingredients bar of 21 fillings that include shrimp, sweet plantains and chorizo, as well as rotating specials like coconut goat. (Oh, and there are also 11 sauces.) All arepas are gluten free and made on-site, and there are desserts like arroz con leche as well as fresh juices like pineapple lemonade. Go to Bruno, but skip the pizza There have been more column inches devoted to everything about this new East Village spot except the food. And on a recent Saturday night, we found plenty of idiosyncrasies to distract from it — our waiter was so new that he couldn’t recommend a dry red wine from a modest list, the lack of anything sound-absorbing made conversation difficult, and yes, we want our entrees at the same time, this is not tapas. The much-hyped pizza, ordered by two out of three at our table, was underwhelming in both cases. Fermented tomatoes are a nice idea, but the salt overwhelmed
any other flavor on the margherita, while the crust had none of the char or crunch that make it worth the calories. What it was good for, however, was sopping up the remainder of my pasta dish of gigantic, perfectly al dente cavatappi lapped with bone marrow, dotted with clams and bacon that punctuated each rich bite with smoky-sweetness. If you had a rough week, this is your dish; pair it with the chianti and you may just have the strength needed to face the world again on Monday. Open for dinner, 204 E. 13th St.

The 1950s romance “Brooklyn” is the kind of melodrama that’s easy to call simple, even as a compliment. But melodramas, at least the good ones, are never simple. Bubbling under their unassuming yet riotously beautiful exteriors lies a riot of emotions and complications and heartbreak. “Brooklyn” is one of the good ones, gorgeous to look at and deeply felt, and even sneaky about being smart. It spins the deceptively basic tale of Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish woman newly arrived in New York, who soon finds herself in a hesitant romance with Tony (Emory Cohen), a sweetly shy Italian-American with a permanent nervous smile and a thing for Irish girls. Eilis will, like all melodrama heroes,
have to make a choice, between her homeland and between Tony and another meek suitor (Domhnall Gleeson) from back home. But no choice comes easy, and every moment in “Brooklyn” is loaded with unease and mixed emotions. Colm Toibin’s novel was adapted by Nick Hornby, a man of many words, who fills pages with cascading thoughts and anguish and self-deceptions. Here he pares everything down to the story. It’s really a visual movie, from the warm colors and patient camerawork to the way it allows viewers to scan faces and body language to see what its characters are trying to hide. In that sense it’s Ronan’s movie. She has the kind of face that’s perfect to film: deceptively placid but containing everything. Making a good melodrama in 2015 is hard to pull off without it seeming like affectation. “Brooklyn” doesn’t feel like affectation. It seems like good melodrama, period. MATT PRIGGE

Week 9 filled with must-see matchups Week 8 had its share of great matchups. Only against the elite Broncos defense could Aaron Rodgers manage to put up only 77 passing yards and a single-digit FanDuel score. Also last week, Eli Manning and Drew Brees put up 38+ FanDuel points ‌ each! In Week 9, there are a variety of matchups that could either positively or negatively aect your FanDuel lineup.
Cromartie vs. Father time This week, the Jets face the up-and-down Jacksonville Jaguars. It is more than likely that Darrelle Revis will defend WR Allen Robinson, leaving Antonio Cromartie to contain Allen Hurns. Cromartie is not the same cornerback he used to be, Hurns scored a touchdown in each of his last ďŹ ve games, and he will only cost you $6,800. This is a matchup a FanDuel player could use to prosper.
Langford vs. Chargers D The Chargers give up the absolute most FanDuel points to opposing running backs. In fact, they give up an average of 116 yards on the ground and another 56 yards of receiving to whatever back faces them. This week, that back will be unproven rookie Jeremy Langford.
Manning vs. Colts The Peyton Manning we saw play against the Packers in Week 8 is the kind of Manning that’s conďŹ dent in his defense. With an entirely new way of winning, there is a chance that Manning will have his wits about him and have a decent game. It doesn’t hurt that the Indianapolis defense is nothing to write home about.
Rodgers vs. Norman Rodgers is going to have to ďŹ gure out how to both avoid Panthers cornerback Josh Norman and ignite his anemic oense. Even if you take his 77-yard passing performance against the Broncos o the table, Rodgers hasn’t been the same guy this season, having only gone over 300 passing yards once all year.

Things to watch for as G-Men face Bucs
The Giants’ defense will look to rebound from last week’s humiliating performance. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us
The Giants’ defense insists it’s not still licking its wounds following last week’s debacle in New Orleans, but that performance should definitely linger in their minds as they head to Tampa Bay to face the 3-4 Buccaneers (4:05 p.m., FOX). Just because they no longer have to deal with Drew Brees, to a man they’re well aware that rookie quarterback Jameis Winston is also capable of torching their secondary. Winston, last April’s No. 1 overall pick, has been on a roll lately. And while he won’t likely burn Big Blue’s defense for seven touchdown passes, the neophyte is more than capable of making the defense weary — particularly with deep throws down the field. Winston’s passer rating on throws of 20 or more yards is 123, which is second-best in the NFL, backing up Giants head coach Tom Coughlin’s claims that the rookie has been playing like a seasoned veteran lately. Tampa’s youthful signal caller won’t be doing it alone, though, as he’s
JP-Possible Giants’ fans are anxiously awaiting the go-ahead from Coughlin on whether he’ll let defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul stay back in Jersey or accompany the team to Tampa. All signs point to the latter, which means Pierre-Paul should be making
been complemented by the rejuvenation of running back Doug Martin. The diminutive (5-foot-9), yet sturdy (225 pounds) back is enjoying his best season in years, as he’s tallied 612 rushing yards (fourth in the league). Martin is also second in the league in rushes of 10 or more (19), rushes of 20 or more (seven), and forced missed tackles (30). Tampa certainly has the firepower to stay with New York, so look for yet another high-octane game. Metro takes a look at the key storylines for the Giants’ (4-4) Week 9 game:

Coughlin. “I’ve got to convince him [Coughlin], and it’s up to the medical sta. As of right now, I’m continuing to do the reps out there and getting the play calling,â€? said Pierre-Paul. “I want to play, yeah. But it’s up to the medical sta.â€? Many have been lobbying
to get JPP back on the ďŹ eld this Sunday. “I’m sending him out there,â€? said left guard Justin Pugh when asked what he’d do if he was the head coach. “I know one thing, when he does, I wouldn’t want to be playing left tackle against JPP the rest of the year. I think he’s got something to prove.â€?
3
Will Giants make him famous? Winston has his fair share of weapons around him, so he can deďŹ nitely stick with Eli Manning and Co., point for point. Big Blue allows 316.1 passing yards per game, so Winston will have plenty of chances to test their resolve. The Bucs average 353.3 total yards per game, with 222 yards coming from Winston’s right arm. The rookie doesn’t have as many yards passing per game as Manning (258), but he bests the two-time Super Bowl MVP in downďŹ eld passing precision, meaning he can make all the throws. And just like Manning has a star at wideout in Odell Beckham Jr., Winston has his own downďŹ eld weapon in receiver Mike Evans, who may have the league’s best catch radius.
Eli Manning is looking to deliver the Giants win No. 5 on the season. Getty Images
Can Eli keep it rolling? Manning was just as impressive as Brees last week, but does he have an encore in him? Sunday will likely be a shootout, so the Giants will need their veteran quarterback to again be on point. Manning isn’t the type to brag or make guarantees, but he is conďŹ dent that the oense can stay hot. “I think it just comes with practice. We’ve had a great week of practice and getting a lot of reps on the plays that we’re running ‌ we’re
playing fast, Manning said, adding they’ll need to be extra careful in ball control, as the Buccaneers have forced 17 fumbles. “They do a great job causing turnovers, I think. Stripping the ball, getting fumbles, [and] getting pressure on the quarterback. They have a good pass rush, good defensive line, and mix up their coverages and disguises. They have a good scheme. Should the Giants’ offensive line continue to gel and give Manning time, he just may be able to put on another aerial assault.

The Jets need a bounceback win in Week 9 to keep pace for the second AFC Wild Card spot. GETTY IMAGES
Things to watch for as the Jets take on the Jaguars After a brutal couple of weeks, the Jets have a favorable matchup against Jacksonville. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us
All the good vibrations from a loss two weeks ago at the New England Patriots are gone for the New York Jets, who now face an era of uncertainty. A once-vaunted defense has been mediocre (to put it kindly) the past two games, exposed in their pass defense in particular the past two games. The offense is a giant question mark as well given the health of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Factor in that their opponent, the Jaguars, are refreshed coming off a bye week and had an impressive win two weeks ago against the Bills makes this far from an easy game for the Jets. A game that, at 4-3, is close to must-win if this team seriously wants to challenge for a Wild Card berth.
1
THUMBS UP
The torn ligaments in Ryan Fitzpatrick’s left thumb surely haven’t healed all the way but
the Jets quarterback is going to be the starter for this Sunday’s game. The injury was bad enough to knock him out of last Sunday’s loss at the Oakland Raiders, something that put the entire offense on their back foot for the rest of the first half. Is an injured Fitzpatrick really better than a slightly dinged up Geno Smith? Fitzpatrick’s injury is bad enough to require surgery at some point. “I’m extremely confident. I don’t want to put the team in a position where I’m going to go out and hurt the team and turn the ball over or try to be a hero because something is compromised,” Fitzpatrick said. “I want to go out there and help the team. If I can do that without putting me or the team in a compromising position then I will and I think I’m going to be able to do that.”
2
CROMARTIE RECOVERY?
Against the Raiders last week, Antonio Cromartie might have put in the worst performance of his NFL career. Playing opposite Darrelle Revis, Cromartie will necessarily be tested as opposing quarterbacks are likely to throw away from one of
the game’s best cornerbacks. But against the Raiders, Cromartie was terrible in coverage and his tackling was even worse than that. He is showing a diminishing skill set since training camp and needs to bounce back in a major way for the jets defense to click like it is supposed to.
3
JAGS HAVE SOME BITE
Two weeks ago against the Bills, it was the Jaguars who put together an impressive comeback win in London. Having lost their previous four games coming into the Bills game, it would have been easy for Jacksonville to have folded when they were down in the second half but instead they showed incredible resilience and character. “For our players to bounce back like you said go out there and there’s a lot of lessons from that game. We got out to a big lead and they came back, and then to fight back I think, shows the resolve of our team,” Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said. “Very pleased with the overall performance and what we gained from that.” It might just be a building block for the Jaguars program.
