T riders to push back on fare hikes Advocates to speak out at the MBTA oversight board’s Monday meeting. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
As discussion continued over how much the MBTA can legally raise fares in 2016, T riders from several Boston neighborhoods planned to make an alternative case on Monday: Don’t raise fares at all. “We don’t think fare increases or cuts are the answer,” said Lee Matsueda, political director for Roxbury-based Alternatives for Community and environment and former head of the T Riders Union, an ACE program. “We see the need for an alternative.” The MBTA’s governorappointed oversight board was scheduled to meet Monday. It had been discussing the possibility of bumping up the cost of entry for the state’s public transit systems, but hadn’t yet taken up a concrete proposal. Advocates told Metro they planned to speak during the public comment portion of the T board’s meeting. Just a handful of advocates appeared at the board’s
DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
meeting last week. “[Monday] has to be about remembering how the fare increase will have an impact on T riders, especially those who are the most vulnerable,” Matsueda said. Part of the debate right now includes whether a 2013 state law permits the T to raise fares by five or 10 percent on July 1, 2016, the earliest the system would be allowed to hike prices. Some say the state could increase fares by 10 percent, as the administration of Gov. Charlie
“We don’t think fare increases or cuts are the answer. We see the need for an alternative.” Matsueda
Baker and state Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack have argued. Others, among them lawmakers and advocates for the coalition, have said state law limiting fare increases to every two years only allows for a 5 percent increase over those two years, total.
Here’s what the law says: “The authority shall not increase fares at intervals of less than 24 months or at an annual rate greater than 5 percent.” In a different section it also says if the T wants to increase fares it must create a report about how
the agency plans to “limit increases to not more than 5 percent every 24 months.” Lawmakers and officials interpret the language differently, even among those who drafted the law, according to reporting from the State House News Service. Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Tom McGee said the bill was intended to cap fare hikes at 5 percent, while House committee Chairman claimed the law lets the T increase fares by 10 percent over the two
years, the SHNS reported. The discussion comes as the MBTA grapples with closing a budget gap while also paying for service improvements. Among financial worries, the T expected a $170 million deficit for this fiscal year and projected a $427 million deficit in 2020. It would cost $7.3 billion to complete an MBTA maintenance backlog, a report from the board found. The difference between a five or 10 percent fare increase amounts to a small dent in the problem for the T, Senate President Stan Rosenberg told reporters last week. “It’s really the flea on the tail of the dog. The needs of the T and our public transit systems and our road and bridge program are so significant that focusing on the size of the fare increase is really focusing on the wrong question,” Rosenberg said on Wednesday, according to the News Service. He also said, “I think it’s fair to revisit the fare cap.” The MBTA increased fares by an average of 23 percent in 2012, and by an average of 5 percent in 2014. Right now, the T loses about $2.07 for every ride on public transportation, according to a report from the MBTA board.

Investigators ‘90 percent sure’ bomb downed Russian plane Investigators of the Russian plane crash in Egypt are “90 percent sure” the noise heard in the final second of a cockpit recording was an explosion caused by a bomb, a member of the investigation team told Reuters on Sunday. “The indications and analysis so far of the sound on the black box indicate it was a bomb,” said the Egyptian investigation team member, who asked not to be named due to sensitivities. “We are 90 percent sure it was a bomb.” His comments reflect a much greater degree of certainty about the cause of the crash than the investigation committee has so far declared in public. Lead investigator Ayman al-Muqaddam announced on Saturday that the plane appeared
to have broken up in midair while it was being flown on autopilot, and that a noise had been heard in the last second of the cockpit recording. But he said it was too soon to draw conclusions about why the plane crashed. Confirmation that militants brought down the airliner could have a devastating impact on Egypt’s lucrative tourist industry, which has suffered from years of political turmoil and was hit last week when Russia, Turkey and several European countries suspended flights to Sharm al-Sheikh and other destinations. It could also mark a new strategy by the hardline Islamic State group which holds large parts of Syria and Iraq. Asked to explain the remaining 10 percent

margin of doubt, the investigator declined to elaborate, but Muqaddam cited other possibilities on Satur-
day including a fuel explosion, metal fatigue in the plane or lithium batteries overheating. He said debris was
scattered over an 8-mile area “which is consistent with an in-flight break-up.” REUTERS

BRIEFS UFO off California? Streaking light was missile test, Pentagon says Social media lit up on Saturday night with reports of streaking lights across the skies from California to Arizona, but the phenomenon turned out to be a Navy missile test flight launched off the southern California coast, the Pentagon said. A Pentagon public affairs spokesman said a U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs Trident II (D5) missile test flight was conducted at sea from the USS Kentucky, in the Pacific Test Range off the coast of Southern California. Users of social media platforms posted photos, comments and video of the lights, wondering whether they might have come from everything from a meteor to a UFO. The tests of the unarmed missile were part of a scheduled, on-going system evaluation test, according to the spokesman, Commander Ryan Perry. Such launches are conducted on a frequent, recurring basis to ensure the continued reliability of the system, Perry said, as well as to provide systems information and assurances of their capabilities. Rainn Wilson: Top of the nerd hierarchy In his memoir, “The Bassoon King,” the actor talks about his less-than-cool hobbies and his favorite memories from “The Office.” EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence
emily.laurence@metro.us
Rainn Wilson’s interests in playing the bassoon in orchestra, competing on the chess team and joining the pottery club didn’t exactly make him the cool kid at school. “There were no nerd CEOs or nerd podcasts,” he says of being geeky before it had cachet. “Nerds were there to get beat up and to be mocked.”
Things changed when he joined the drama club. “There’s a nerd hierarchy and the drama geek is at the top of it because there are very cute girls that will hang out with you in that environment,” he says. “Once I saw I could make people laugh with acting, I left that other stuff behind. I didn’t quit the bassoon until I got to college, but I was off and running.”
New York in the ’90s After college, Wilson spent the early ’90s
pursuing acting while living in New York’s East Village. He lived on Avenue C and Third Street in a three-bedroom apartment, where he and two roommates each paid $500 a month. “At that time, Alphabet City was pretty overrun with drugs,” he says. When he wasn’t dodging fights between squatters, he liked taking his pit bull to the dog run in Tompkins Square Park. “Dog parks are the great equalizer,” he says. “You’ve got folks from the projects, rich folks, students and poor artists like my girlfriend [now wife, Holiday Reinhorn] and me were, so that’s always great.”

ing about “The Office” While Wilson had been in a long list of TV shows before “The Office,” most of his fans know him as Dwight Schrute — and his “Office” audition really did change his life. “I was the first person to audition on the very first day of auditioning,” he remembers. First, he auditioned for the role of Michael Scott, which he says went terribly. But he nailed the Dwight audition. “I just knew that combination of white trash, nerd, knowit-all, self-serious weirdo so well. That was my wheelhouse. I knew I had
to play that role.” Wilson has many favorite Dwight moments — there’s no shortage of memories in his book — but his favorite moment of all is a tender moment he shared with Jim, in the episode “Money.” Angela has broken up with Dwight and Jim comes down to the stairwell to cheer him up. After they talk, Dwight reaches
out to Jim to hug him or thank him, but Jim isn’t there and Dwight is left looking a bit bashful. “It’s my favorite moment in all the 300 episodes,” Wilson says. “That’s what I loved about the show. We could be ridiculous and absurd in the humor, but at the same time there are some tender, human moments.”

How to drink like Bond Boston Harbor Hotel’s Rowes Wharf Bar boasts an entire Bond-themed cocktail menu. ISTOCK
The perception that James Bond only drinks Champagne is a total misconception. LINDA CLARKE @MetroBOS
letters@metro.us
The man at the helm of Boston Harbor Hotel’s Rowes Wharf Bar is such a James Bond fan that he’s created a range of
cocktails in honor of the film’s release. Many bars are cashing in on Bond fever by touting the Vesper and bandying around that oft-used Bond quote — “shaken, not stirred — but Rowes Wharf general manager Kerem Benyamini went the extra mile, curating an entire “James Bond: Spectre cocktail menu. The list of nine cocktails was inspired by 007’s personal favorites,

or drinks featured in Bond creator Ian Fleming’s books (and thereafter, the films). Some of the cocktails also reflect certain time periods or locations in Bond’s globe-trotting spy career. “If Bond is in Cuba, it makes sense he’s drinking a mojito, says Benyamini. “The common perception is of Bond drinking only Champagne and the Vesper, but the books include many different drinks, says the 40-year-old, who lives in the West End. “There are more than even
these drinks because every movie is different. As for his favorite drink on his menu, it is the Old Fashioned. “You can’t go wrong with any of these drinks, but I’m normally a Manhattan drinker, so the Old Fashioned would be my choice. Why does Bond still excite and thrill after all these years? The appeal is part myth, part nostalgia, and pure escapism. Another element is the comfort of a constant presence in today’s fast-changing world. “It takes me back
to watching the films with my dad, Benyamini says. “The first one I remember was ‘Dr. No,’ and from there I just got sucked into it. “Doesn’t everyone want to be James Bond? Benyamini asks. “I like what Daniel Craig is doing, but Pierce Brosnan is my favorite. Benyamini doesn’t think of himself as a Bond superfan but says, “I’ve seen each film more than once, let’s put it that way. I will
be there the first night to see ‘Spectre’ and will watch it in the theatre at least once. The James Bond: Spectre cocktail menu is available at Rowes Wharf Bar through Nov. 15. Be your own boss HOW TO GET AHEAD Melanie Duncan has started three (count ’em!) businesses. She tells us how she does it all. AMANDA VALENTOVIC @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Melanie Duncan is a triple threat in the business world. She owns and runs three successful companies: Custom Greek Threads, a fraternity and sorority apparel seller; monogrammed home décor manufacturer Luxury Monograms; and online marketing and
business classes that teach how to launch your own company. We talked to Duncan about how she got started and what it’s like to be your own boss. You started Custom Greek Threads with your boyfriend (now husband) when you were still in
college. Is launching a business before you graduate something you would recommend? One of the best things I ever did was choose to start a business in college. I’m shocked that more people don’t do it. For most of us, it’s the perfect little incubator period

What advice would you give someone who wants to start their own company, but doesn’t have any business experience? I think that when you get experience it’s by going out there and trying something. What I would say is try to frame whatever ideas you’re testing in
where your classes really aren’t taking up all of your time. Also, you’re kind of fearless in college. You’re still young enough that you believe you’re invincible and anything is possible. You’re learning from professors with different backgrounds and hanging out with people who are in different majors, so I think that your exposure to ideas and opportunities is at an all-time high. When you’re running three businesses, how do you make sure you’re balancing all of them equally? The key thing is really investing my time and energy in the right hires so that I have the right people that are solely focused on those businesses for me. My brain can’t be in every nook and cranny of that many different
the most flexible way possible. I would really encourage people to just get their feet wet with a couple different ideas and gauge off of that experience.
things, so I put all my time into making sure I am building the right team of people to work in those businesses and then doing everything I can to support and empower them to really thrive. What are some good and bad things about being your own boss? When you’re your own boss, you’re probably the toughest boss you’ll ever have, because you’re constantly evaluating your own performance. I require more from myself than I probably do from anyone else. When you’re your own boss, you have to be framing your expectations for yourself realistically. I’ve been running my own businesses for 10 years now, so hitting that point has made me realize that it’s a marathon and not a sprint.

There are ways to find scholarships outside the university system. ISTOCK
How to go to college on a budget Getting a bachelor’s degree can be really expensive, but you don’t need to break the bank to earn a great education. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri
raquel.laneri@metro.us
College is expensive. Really, really expensive. And with the economy still struggling, it can be hard to scramble together $30,000 a year — or, likely, more — to attend school. But there are ways to save, and get, money while pursuing a college degree. We asked Shereem Herndon-Brown, a former admissions officer at Georgetown University and current director of Strategic Admissions Advice, for his tips on how to make college more affordable.
Have a plan One of the best ways to curb college costs is making sure you can finish your degree in four years. “Students need to have direction, a major in mind that suits their interests and their
long-term goals,” says Herndon-Brown. “If you go in without a plan and just take random classes, you can find yourself on a six- or seven-year plan. When students have a clear picture of what they want to do, what suits their personality — that can save money.”
Start at a community college If you don’t know what you want to do, one way to explore possibilities without burning a hole in your pocket is to do some credits close to home, says Herndon-Brown. “Staring at a local community college and going there for two years and then transferring is a good option.”
Look for scholarships in unusual places It can be hard to get scholarships. But just because you may not qualify for need-based assistance from the school of your choice doesn’t mean that you don’t need some help. Fortunately, there are outside organizations that give money — such as churches, community centers and other groups. And, of course, there’s
Be employable Majoring in liberal arts isn’t necessarily a bad — or money-wasting — decision. But students should be focused on balancing their more scholarly pursuits with tangible real-world skills, like fundamental accounting and economics, basic coding and computer programming, or an in-demand language such as Mandarin. “There’s nothing wrong with studying philosophy or English or the social sciences,” says Herndon-Brown. “But double major or minor in something that’ll make you an asset to the kinds of companies who you want to work for.” (It’ll help pay off those student loans faster, too.)
the Internet. “Websites like Fastweb.com and College Xpress are like search engines for scholarships,” says Herndon-Brown. “I also recommend working with a financial aid consultant, who can help match your interests and strengths with appropriate scholarships.” Herndon-Brown advises students to start early. “Finding aid is a long and tedious process, so you should start the end of junior year.”

Patriots coast yet again, move to 8-0 The Patriots ripped the Redskins, 27-10, Sunday at Gillette Stadium. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
It has often been said in these parts that the Patriots treat games as if they are business meetings. The Pats were predictably all business Sunday at Gillette Stadium, clocking in at 1 p.m. and clocking out at 3:59 p.m. with a 27-10, no-nonsense victory over the Redskins. The win moved New England to a perfect 8-0 on the 2015 season. The Pats’ offense came out of the gate by putting up 14 points in the first quarter and the defense was stout throughout as it did not give up a touchdown until there were just 25 seconds left in the fourth. The Patriots now turn their attention to the New York Giants, one of the few teams in the league that has been able to solve the Pats on a relatively consistent basis in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. Three things we learned Sunday against Washington:

The Patriots had found the end zone twice before the Redskins ran even their second play from scrimmage. Tom Brady (26 of 39, 299 yards, two touchdowns) hit Julian Edelman for an 8-yard TD and LeGarrette Blount rumbled in to sandwich a Logan Ryan interception. Ryan’s pick came when Kirk Cousins’ pass bounced off of Pierre Garcon at the Washington 41-yard line. The Redskins never let things get out of hand, but at the same time never posed a threat to the far-superior Patriots the rest of the way.

Around the NFL A look at key scores from Week 9: Colts 27, Broncos 24— The Broncos are no longer undefeated as they were upset by the Colts in Indy. Jets 28, Jaguars 23 — The Jets (5-3) won despite Chris Ivory and the ground game again struggling. Bills 33, Dolphins 17— Tyrod Taylor had a triumphant return to play and LeSean McCoy had his best day as a Bill with 112 yards rushing. Steelers 38, Raiders 35— The Steelers won despite Ben Roethlisberger leaving the game due to injury as Landry Jones found Antonio Brown for a 57-yard play late. Panthers 37, Packers 29— Thomas Davis intercepted Aaron Rodgers on fourth and goal to seal the Carolina victory.
was late January and that the Patriots were playing the Colts. The burly back was in rare form, carrying the ball 29 times for 129 yards. He electrified the Gillette crowd late in the third quarter as he spun and slammed through a handful of Washington
defenders. The lightning to Blount’s thunder did not enjoy Sunday’s game, however. Dion Lewis, who had shown flashes of brilliance in the first half of the season, was injured with 5:20 left in the third. Washington’s Chris Baker fell on Lewis’ left ankle, but it was later reported that Lewis had a knee injury. He walked slowly off the field and into the locker room but did not return to the game.

LOGAN EXPRESS
Logan Ryan is now in a second place tie for most interceptions in the league this year, with four. While Malcolm Butler gets most of the secondary praise these days thanks to what transpired in last February’s Super Bowl, Ryan has emerged as a legit starting cornerback this season and the Patriots have yet to truly miss Darrelle Revis. Ryan and the Pats’ secondary held Cousins to just 22-of-40 passing for 217 yards and a late, garbage-time touchdown. The Redskins QB finished with a 68.4 passer rating. The Pats also wiped out the production of the returning DeSean Jackson, allowing just three catches for 15 yards to the big-play-creator.
