The city is touting its job numbers after new data shows that unemployment is at the lowest level since 2006. October stats from the state Department of Labor released Thursday not only said that the unemployment rate has reached its lowest level since August 2006, but also put that rate below national unemployment for the first time since June 2011. Tony’s Metro Magic collecting toys for kids in NYC, Boston, Philly Please donate to the Metro Magic annual holiday toy drive during the 2015 holiday season. In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Metro is once again launching Tony’s Metro Magic, our annual toy drive for underprivileged children in Boston, New York and Philadelphia. This year marks the sixth anniversary of the toy drive, which was renamed in memory the man who oversaw the project for more than four years, Tony Metcalf, Metro’s longest-running editor-in-chief. Metcalf passed away in 2013 from colon cancer at the age of 50. Metcalf lit up every year as he saw the faces of children unwrap their holiday gifts. It is our

goal to keep that magic alive. We are now asking readers to contribute what they can to Tony’s Metro Magic. Metro has created a wish list at the Target website that readers can access by going to Metro. us and clicking on the Tony’s Metro Magic logo. From there, just choose the toys you wish to donate, pay online using Target’s secure payment system, and your gifts, along with your

name attached, will be delivered to Metro’s offices in each city. So through the rest of November and December, both in print and online, we will be reminding readers to donate. This season, we hope you will remember the children who will spend the holidays in shelters or who may not have gifts to open. Even one small gift can make a big difference in a child’s holiday season. METRO

BRIEF Suspect shoves Brooklyn judge into tree: Report A 60-year-old man was assaulted earlier this week when an unknown man shoved him into a tree in Sheepshead Bay, cops said. The victim was walking down East 16th Street near Avenue R just before 4 p.m. on Monday when he was pushed, according to authorities. The suspect is accused of

pushing the man, causing him to come in contact the tree, before fleeing on foot. The victim suffered pain and redness to his left ear, but refused medical atten-

tion at the scene. The victim was identified by ABC 7 as Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Leon Ruchelsman. Though the motive is unclear, the victim does not believe it was robbery or that it was bias crime. Police, who have released video footage of the suspect, described him as white male who as was wearing a gray sweat suit. METRO

Video of Brooklyn subway shooting suspect released Two victims were hospitalized.

Police are hoping video footage will help catch the suspect who gunned downed two men on a subway stairway in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The shooting happened at the Fulton Street/Utica Avenue A/C stop at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday. A 27-year-old man was shot several times in the stomach and was wounded in the arm and leg, while the

second victim, a 45-yearold man, was shot in his lower back, police said. They were both taken to Kings County Hospital Center, where they are listed in stable condition. Bronx cops and teens blitz barriers The NYPD and Police Athletic League championship brought Bronx teams and officers together. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

The lights on Mott Haven High School’s football field were illuminated as a group of NYPD officers and teenagers wearing blue and red flags squared off for the borough title in the Police Athletic League’s Cops & Kids Bronx championship flag football game. As the Metro North and MTA trains rumbled in the distance, NYPD explorers presented the colors, the national anthem was sung and a chaplain said a prayer as players took a knee before the game. creased scrutiny on the relationship between police officers and young people in lower-income and communities of color, the symbolism of officers and Bronx teens teaming up wasn’t lost on the officers or the players Tuesday night. “This is the first year we’ve participated as a precinct,” said Inspector Nilda Hoffman of the 52nd

Precinct, who cheered on the combined and undefeated 52nd and 50th Precinct teams. “I think it’s wonderful to see my cops come out here and do this with the kids. Sometimes as cops we only see the negative with the children, because that’s what we encounter, when anyone calls 911, usually it’s for a bad reason. This way, they see kids out there

that we never encounter.” The PAL program isn’t anything new, but the emphasis on the big championship game is, said Officer Victor Matos, who works in the Community Affairs Youth Services and organized the game. Matos said he wanted all 140 kids and 30 cops in the Bronx program to feel they were part of something bigger, and the opportunity to connect in the wake of heightened police and community relations. “My friends think cops aren’t human,” said Victor Duran, 15, who plays with the 43rd Precinct team. Duran, who is originally from the Dominican Republic, wasn’t playing in the Tuesday night game but was cheering on his 43rd Precinct teammates. This was his first year playing in the league. “It’s changed me a lot, I used to be mad shy,” Duran said. “I didn’t talk to nobody, but now I got the power to do it.”

Duran said he now looks at police officers he sees on the street differently because of the positive interaction he’s had playing football with them. “Kids at school don’t have the same perception, they think they’re like mad, bad, terrible persons.” Brenda Brito, a campus police officer at Bronx Community College, said her son, Jeremiah, has a different perspective than many of his peers because she’s in law enforcement. “This is his first year and he’s having fun,” Brito said. “He has not

missed one day and he’s met a lot of new people.” “I think the kids think it’s pretty cool to be able to play with the cops and see we’re just like them,” said Matos. The event also included a DJ, crew of junior reporters and a appearance in the stands from former New York Jets cornerback Bobby Jackson. “And it helps the cops remember they were young like them before.” [The 50/52 Precinct won in double overtime and will play in the borough championships on Dec. 5.]

Times Square sees heavy police presence after ISIS video threat The ISIS video that suggests an attack did not keep tourists away. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Tourists and New Yorkers continued to visit Times Square on Thursday despite an Islamic State (ISIS) video that suggested New York City as a target. NYPD officers with semiautomatic long guns patrolled the crossroads of the world, and a Times Square Alliance guard suggested crowds were a bit lighter, maybe because of the rain, or because of the ISIS video that depicts a person putting on a suicide vest, and includes shots of Times Square and Herald Square. In response to the video, the NYPD said New York City remains a top target and the city on heightened alert though there is no credible threat. John Doherty, 49, from Boston, was in town for a video surveillance convention and walking through Times Square on Thursday afternoon. “I’ve seen the video … I think with all the police officers here now than I did two weeks ago. THE FUN STARTS HERE Bummed that “The Hunger Games” movies are all done? We have some ideas to keep the dream alive. Now that the “Hunger Games” franchise has reached its final act, fans will be searching for ways to get their Panem fix. Director Francis Lawrence has said he isn’t opposed to spinoffs, and tributes will surely find creative ways to keep immersed in Katniss’ world. But we’re impatient, so we’ve imagined five ways the Games could go on right away.

Movies With the vague possibility that the series could be extended, how about a sequel chronicling the rebuilding of Panem? A new president is in place following an emergency election. How will he or she direct the nation and districts? A political drama full of backstabbing and skullduggery a la “House of Cards” could be a nice change from the constant battle scenes of the first four films. Or how about a prequel giving us President Snow’s origin story? There’s so much we don’t know about the man who ruled Panem. How did

How Jennifer Lawrence really is Katniss She came from humble beginnings, the spotlight thrust upon her despite her obvious discomfort, and she went on to inspire a nation. Are we talking about Katniss Everdeen, Jennifer Lawrence’s “Hunger Games” character, or Lawrence herself? How about both? The parallels are eerie if you look closely enough. Lawrence first came to the public’s attention in the critically acclaimed Sundance darling “Winter’s Bone,” which saw her scrounging around Appalachia, hunting and skinning squirrels and risking life and limb to provide for her younger siblings. It was basically the first act of the first “Hunger Games” movie, minus all the totalitarianism. We thrilled with each new, elaborate red carpet gown, marveled at every acting triumph. We agonized over each death-defying pratfall before the cameras — until we realized her natural clumsiness was her greatest weapon. This girl really was on fire. She even found herself in a

real, honest-to-Panem love triangle, her heart torn between lanky, British “X-Men: First Class” co-star Nicholas Hoult and her first true love, working in awesome movies. Try as she might to make it work with Hoult, her thoughts — and often, her body — were clearly elsewhere, and if there wasn’t an “X-Men” movie actually in active production, she couldn’t make things work with Hoult. They’ll always have Montreal, though. As her work brought her more and more into contact with the Capitol — or, you know, Hollywood — she courted more danger, more scrutiny, more creepy older men — like Chris Martin — pawing at her. But through it all she kept her chin up, secure in her folksy dignity. Now that the “Hunger Games” series is done, Katniss is free to pursue a happy, quiet life away from the spotlight. But when will Jennifer Lawrence be able to do the same? Hasn’t she suffered enough, David O. Russell? NED EHRBAR

Gale vs. Peeta Who holds your “Hunger Games” heart? It’s the ultimate debate for “Hunger Games” fans. Whom should Katniss choose?

In 2013, luxury e-retailer Net-A-Porter teamed up with costume designer Trish Summerville on a Capitol Couture line featuring adaptations of designs from the movies. But aspiring to dress like the ruling class is rather crass, so we propose a District 13 diffusion line of unisex, standard-issue wear that doesn’t oppress its maker or its wearer. NICHOLE JANKOWSKI

Theme park We didn’t make this one up: As if following the adventures of Katniss Everdeen didn’t come with enough ups and downs, fans will soon be able to take a reallife roller-coaster ride inspired by her train to the Capitol and a simulated hovercraft tour of Panem. Hunger Games theme park projects are planned in Dubai, China and the U.S. A re-creation of District 12 complete with costumed characters is in the works for the complex in Dubai. HENRIETTA WALMARK, METRO

Gale Hawthorne Pros: • Gale and Katniss have plenty in common: hunting, the great outdoors and knowing what it’s like to almost starve to death. • If Panem were a bit more peaceful he’d be the football star, the prom king. He’s the hot guy you want to show off to your friends. Cons: • He’s a “the-ends-justify-themeans” kind of guy, which isn’t the best thing if you’re prone to empathy. • Much like Katniss, he’s full of anger and vengeance — and two firecrackers is nothing but trouble in a relationship.

Peeta Mellark Pros: • He’s the baker’s son — plenty of carbs any time you like — as Katniss learns, that’s a good thing when you’re almost starving to death. • He’s kind and generous, risking his life to protect the people he loves. Cons: • Short and nonathletic — he’s dead weight when it comes to hunting and death battles. • The brainwashing and attempts to kill Katniss are romance killers. LIZ BROWN

The real Ilana Glazer The writer, comedian and actress talks about her first big movie and what to expect from “Broad City.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

When we speak, Ilana Glazer is a New Yorker in Los Angeles. Historically there has been great animosity between the coastal meccas. But the “Broad City” co-creator — talking to us about a bit part in the Christmas Eve comedy “The Night Before,” with Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — feels that rivalry is dying away. She even admits to looking forward to being bicoastal sometime soon, which might come as a shock to fans of her and Abbi Jacobson’s very New Yorkcentric show. Glazer tells us about doing her

first big movie and reveals how “Broad City’s” third season, premiering February 17, will get more real — if that’s even possible. This is your first big movie. Did you spend a lot of time wandering around, seeing how everything works at that level of production? Because Abbi and I created “Broad City,” we oversee every single part of it. I know how it all works. I know the

different departments. It’s interesting to not be in charge of it — that was the strangest part. It was interesting to not be the one giving all the answers. You learn how you want to do your own stuff and how you don’t want to do your own stuff. “Broad City” is such an institution now. How did that level of awareness affect your approach to Season 3? With Season 2 we felt like we were finally able to root the characters. Season 1 was such an intro into this intricate world, and Season 2 had the world growing out. Season 3 has been a lovely continuation, going deeper and deeper into the world. It’s a little more real

this season. I’m excited about that. There are moments that are real and painful, real and sad. That realness heightens the comedy so much. I’m excited to see how it’s received, not only because I’m proud of it, but because I’m excited to see if people accept that level of sincerity in their “Broad City.” There’s a lot of serious writing about “Broad City” that says that underneath the jokes there’s a lot of commentary about city life and race and class. That’s true. It’s both intentional and not intentional. It becomes more true when people write that kind of stuff. It’s not just a completely farcical world. They do live

within the real world and have real moments. We can write it and shoot it and edit it, but then the conversation is still going on when it goes out, after it’s aired. It’s collaborative. The audience makes the product too with their responses. I imagine it’s fascinating for artists to read interpretations of their work that see more in them than their makers may have intended. It’s a magical feeling. It’s like someone knows you in a way you didn’t know yourself. At other times I meet people on the street who think they know me because of my character. I’m like, “No. You know that’s not really me?” It is and it isn’t.

To the movies You and Abbi are writing a movie that, interestingly, won’t star either of you. How has it been to write for a different medium and not for yourselves? The break from writing for myself is really rejuvenating, for both of us. We’re working with Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson [director and producer of “Spy” and the new “Ghostbusters”] as partners, and they give us such amazing notes. It’s a pleasure — it’s a pleasure to get these notes. We’ve learned so much. When you force yourself to write a movie, it’s super hard, because it’s so long. But it is so much fun. This industry is so flexible. You can do that. You can write for someone else. It’s a privilege to jump around in that way.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” is so humorless even Elizabeth Banks’ Effie, left, is barely present. MURRAY CLOSE

‘The Hunger Games’ goes out grim MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

Mark this as the moment when all the kids were nuts for a relentlessly grim march through the fog of war. “Mockingjay — Part 2,” the closer of the “Hunger Games” movie quadrilogy, is bleak, tough, rough, powerfully humorless and maybe even important. There’s little YA soap left. Our heroes, most of all mascot of the rebellion Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), are tired, hollowed-out, ready to die. No one can be trusted, not even the noble revolutionaries. Even the happy ending tastes so grossly fake that it seems like author Suzanne Collins just threw in the towel and had mercy on her characters — the ones she let live, that is. Of course, a chapter this despairing only

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” Director: Francis Lawrence Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson Rating: PG-13

••••• exists because the franchise slowly worked its way there, starting from riot grrrl-empowerment origins. It also exists because junk cinema is treated like Ibsen now. For what it’s worth, Collins’ series deserves to be carefully considered. It’s very much a revolution saga for our era, when all seems lost, when all is questioned. It’s no surprise when certain lines — President Snow (Donald Sutherland) telling his subjects that our heroes “are coming to

destroy our way of life” — echo tragic events that happened just last weekend. And so “Mockingjay 2,” like the equally grueling “Mockingjay 1,” isn’t much of a popcorn movie, even when it’s half-pretending to be one. But it earns its bleakness and its pessimism, and if it works at all, it’s as a particularly steely form of melodrama, though not about whether Katniss will pick Peeta or Gale, a decision performed arbitrarily, as though via a coin toss. It’s been a study of one young woman’s predicament and one keenly expressive actress’ face. Lawrence has brought a wounded humanity to Katniss, but she’s also someone whose face can fill a screen, doing very little but saying everything. Watching her, after some 10 hours of increasingly dour dystopia, has been more thrilling than any bit of ass-kicking.

Seth Rogen is a ways into his 30s, far enough that he’s already made a few films about what it’s like to be a fun-loving goofball worried about getting old and mature. In fact, the shtick is already suffering from diminishing returns. The plaint in “The Night Before” isn’t as pronounced or as deeply felt as it was in “Neighbors,” in which Rogen played a new dad annoyed by how annoyed he’s become by young people partying like he once did. Here, he’s an about-to-be dad vexed that he can no longer relate to a longtime friend (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who’s still single, still underemployed and still sad. For nearly all of “The Night

Before,” this anxiety is buried under an “Exodus”-sized tidal wave of raunchy jokes, loopy jokes and jokes about prolific recreational drug use. Rogen’s Isaac heads out for the annual night on the town with Gordon-Levitt’s Ethan and Anthony Mackie’s Chris — perhaps their last time. It’s bittersweet, but it’s mostly raucous, reveling in graffitiing the Christmas movie in gross-out gags, scenes of Rogen stuffing his head with shrooms and coke like he was at an eat-off and a running joke about d— pics. The sad part — including

Ethan pining for an ex (Lizzy Caplan) he stupidly dumped — should be the heart. But it feels tepid and, worse, inevitably bound for a happy ending. That’s fine, as there are plenty of distractions. But there are so many of them that the very real but tepidly handled unease about getting older feels more like the real distraction. Whether or not the sad-sack guy will get the girl doesn’t stand a chance against a scene where Rogen vomits in a packed church while wearing a Star of David sweater. MP

“Carol” Director: Todd Haynes Stars: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara Rating: R

••••• You can define “Carol,” about women falling in love in the 1950s, as much by what it is as what it’s not. It’s not a political film. It’s not a way for audiences from the future to congratulate themselves on how different they are from Truman’s America. It’s not even, really, a melodrama, like another of director Todd Haynes’ trips to the ’50s, “Far From Heaven.” So what’s left for “Carol” to be? The answer might not sound as sexy as described. It’s a passionate yet detached study of the practicalities of love — the twisty-turny route one must navigate to form any kind of relationship, and especially one that has so many barriers thrown

Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett meet-cute at a department store in Todd Haynes’ “Carol.” THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

up in its path. And there are many boundaries facing Cate Blanchett’s society dame Carol and Rooney Mara’s lowly department store clerk Therese. They have to play it cool and negotiate around obstacles, such as Carol’s angry husband (Kyle Chandler). That’s not to say “Carol” skirts the gay issue, even as that word or any of its related terms never finds its way into the dialogue. It doesn’t make a meal of normalizing its characters’ sexuality. It presents them as

they are, and carefully depicts what they have to go through to be together. “Carol” is more muted pictorially than “Far from Heaven,” with many of its shots filmed through windows. It’s not modern-looking, but it’s not retro either. Like its characters, it navigates a corkscrew path with precision. What it’s doing is unique but simple, and by the end it knows it can say all it needs to with nothing more than one actor’s perfect facial expression. MP

Things to watch for as Jets face Texans

Both the 5-4 Jets and 4-5 Texans are very much alive for an AFC playoff spot.

The New York Jets rank 9th in pass defense (230.3 ypg) and Darrelle Revis is a big part of that efficiency. Revis has three interceptions on the season, but more importantly, quarterbacks don’t often throw his way. With five games of over 20 FanDuel points on the season, you have to assume that even with an elite corner covering him, Hopkins will have a high floor in Week 11.

Thumbs up Ryan Fitzpatrick had thumb surgery a week ago to repair torn ligaments in his left thumb. He is back and practic-

ing this week and should be a go for Sunday’s game. The question remains, though. Just how healthy he will be? Even with the injury, there was very

Mr. Prototypical

T.J. who?

Not a lot of space has to be given to the merits of J.J. Watt, the Texans’ explosive defensive end whose penchant for big plays is well documented. Despite his team’s rough start to the season, Watt is putting up monster numbers. He has 42 tackles and 9.5 sacks, making him the focal target of the Jets’ offensive line. If they can keep Watt from wreaking too much havoc, this Jets defense has a shot. “He’s got everything you want. He’s big, he’s fast, he’s strong, he makes plays, he makes interceptions, he

Little used QB T.J. Yates will be the Texans starter under center this Sunday with Brian Hoyer sidelined. Drafted in the mid-rounds in 2011, Yates has just 15 games played in the NFL and has thrown a combined 15 passes over the past two seasons, including 11 passes on Monday night when he came into the Texans’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals. If the Jets are able to bring some pressure, this could be a long afternoon for the Texans’ offense, and a good one for the team from New York.

little drop off in Fitzpatrick’s form, perhaps signaling that if he has healed well. He will be helped by Chris Ivory, who after a rough three games was

solid in the Bills game. More good news for the offense is that Bilal Powell is good to go, adding more depth and some fresh legs to the backfield.

A look at the best bets around the league for Week 11: Raiders (-1) at Lions This game profiles as a shootout as both the Raiders and Lions play horrible defense (30th and 25th, respectively), but Detroit doesn’t have the offense that it has had in years past to keep up with Oakland. The Lions are currently 27th in YPG and have mustered just 18.6 ppg despite QB Matt Stafford

Watkins vs. Butler Historically, Sammy Watkins does not produce when he goes up against shutdown corners. Last week when he went up against CB Darrelle Revis, Watkins caught three passes for 14 yards. In Week 1 when he faced CB Vontae Davis he didn’t even log a catch. Stay away from Rex Ryan’s weapon this week.

Keenum vs. Ravens

T.J. Yates, left, won’t strike much fear into the Jets, but DeAndre Hopkins, right, sure will. Getty Images

We have literally no idea as to what Case Keenum will look like as a starting QB for the Rams. He’s yet to play a snap in the regular season. The good news for Keenum is that he’s starting off as the team leader in the best matchup possible. The Ravens give up the 2nd most FanDuel points to opposing quarterbacks and the most to opposing wide receivers.

Raiders vs. Lions

NFL Best NFL bets for Week 11

The 2015 season has been filled to the brim with injuries, demotions, promotions, etc. Never have we seen so many different players pass through the stat sheets. Here are some key matchups that need to be at the top of your mind when you set your Week 11 lineup. Here are the important battles and how they could affect you.

Hopkins vs. Revis

KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer

It isn’t “must-win” territory, not yet for the Jets, but it is awfully close. Sitting at 5-4 after a frustrating home loss to the Bills, the Jets need this one (Sunday, 1 p.m., CBS). Losers of three of their last four games, another dropped game here would severely damage their shot at a wild card slot. So a win here isn’t necessary, but a loss would still be devastating.

Week 11 filled with must-see matchups

and WR Calvin Johnson playing in every contest this season. Meanwhile, QB Derek Carr and WR Amari Cooper have been putting opposing defenses to shame, leading

the Raiders’ eighthranked offense. The pick: Raiders -1 Chiefs (-3) at Chargers Despite scoring just 23.3 ppg this season, the Chargers are among the league leaders in YPG, thanks mainly to Philip Rivers and the

top-rated pass attack in football. The Chargers should be able to dictate the flow of the game at home and pick up the win as an underdog. But the way San Diego’s season has been going, take the three points for insurance. The pick: Chargers +3 Bengals at Cardinals (-5) The Bengals put on an embarrassing performance last Monday night, scoring just six points in a loss to Houston. Now they’re back in primetime on Sunday night against the Cardinals and their

third-ranked defense. The Bengals will need a whole lot more than six points going against the NFL’s top-ranked offense by YPG, led by former Bengals QB Carson Palmer. Arizona has been bet down from -2.5 to as high as -5 early in the week, but that shouldn’t really matter. The Cardinals are 5-2 ATS going back to last season as home favorites of no more than seven points. The Bengals’ chances to rebound against one of the NFL’s better teams is one tough task. The pick: Cardinals -5 ROBERT CRISCOLA

Detroit gives up the 3rd most FanDuel points to opposing quarterbacks, the 10th most to running backs, 8th most to wide receivers, and the 8th most to tight ends. Oakland gives up the 6th most FanDuel points to opposing quarterbacks, 8th most to running backs, 15th most to wide receivers and the 2nd most to tight ends. Get ready for some offense.

“Moneyball” had been an outlier in baseball, as traditionally, the biggest spending teams were the ones to win divisions, make deep runs in the playoffs, and win the World Series. That is still mostly true in the NBA, where the league has been dominated for years by “Dream Team” ambitions and superstar-laden squads. But in MLS, Moneyball may not be an outlier much longer, but rather the norm. Welcome to MLS 4.0 where the league is being set to be taken over by teams choosing frugality over big names and where a teamconcept beats three Designated Players any day. The problem is, it might just be the league’s worst nightmare. The league’s two lowest-spending teams, FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls, are in their respective conference finals with the Red Bulls having won the Supporters’ Shield this year for the league’s best record. Their opponent in the Eastern Conference Finals (Sunday, 5 p.m., ESPN), the Columbus Crew, have far from a massive payroll - ninth lowest in the 20-team league. Only the Portland Timbers, who have had an erratic year, are in the league’s top half in terms of salaries, having spent just a shade over $6 million this year for the ninth-mostexpensive roster in MLS. These aren’t the Yankees of MLS be-

ing talked about here. Those clubs, such as the Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC, are already out of the playoffs. Others such as Orlando City and New York City, didn’t even make the postseason. Gone are the days, at least temporarily, where the marquee names and Designated Players are good enough to get a franchise to MLS Cup. Analytics and shrewd roster moves are in. The Red Bulls rode a yeoman-like roster of no-names to the shield and the conference finals, eschewing their high-spending ways of the past. Then there is FC Dallas, a young team predicated on South American talent and homegrown products providing flair and balance to their roster. Five of the top 15 salaries in MLS didn’t even make the playoffs this year and seven of the top 20 moneymakers didn’t taste the postseason. The most expensive player left in the postseason is the Crew’s Federico Higuain, who at $1.175 million is the 17th-most-expensive player in the league. Ironically, the playoffs are sponsored by Audi, a high-end automobile manufacturer. But there are no high-end names left in the postseason. What this means for MLS mov-

Red Bulls The Red Bulls will begin their Eastern Conference finals showdown with the Columbus Crew on the road this Sunday (5 p.m., ESPN). The series will shift to Red Bull Arena a week later, on Sunday, Nov. 29. The MLS Conference finals are twogame series’ decided by an aggregate-goal format.

ing forward remains unclear. Teams such as the Galaxy have found success in recent years blending names such as David Beckham and Robbie Keane in with their own American talent to lift more MLS Cups then any other franchise in league history. But while it seems on paper that teams spending less and getting more is a good thing, MLS can’t be happy. The success of the league is built on drawing bigger and bigger names to these shores. The league’s top-five drawing teams are also its top-five spending teams with Portland, the sixth-best club attendance-wise, the highest-ranked draw in the league left in the playoffs. This is a problem for MLS as they continue to want to bring the likes of Kaka, Frank Lampard and David Villa to MLS. Stars mean fannies in the seats and better television ratings. And both of those things mean that the league can get more for expansion franchises, with Atlanta entering the league in 2017 for a reported $70 million fee. If teams can win without stars, will attendance and ratings fall faster than the salary cap numbers? Last year’s conference
