Boston’s 311 service has ticketed and rounded up 1,037 bikes left chained to poles, posts and other solid objects since 2011, according to city data. “Bikes are tagged as abandoned and generally left in place for a minimum of three days,” Tracey Ganiatsos, public information manager at the Boston Transportation Department, told Metro. “If a bike isn’t removed, city staff will cut off the lock, dispose of it, and transport the bike to the Boston Transportation Department Tow Lot at 200 Frontage Road,” Ganiatsos said. The bikes are stored in the same lot as the cars that the city tow, located adjacent to I-93 next to Widett Circle, and the South Boston, South End and Roxbury borders. “If a person wants to claim the bike, they will need to provide a descrip-

Family searches for missing NU student Dennis Njoroge, 21, has now been missing for more than two weeks. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

Family and members of the region’s Kenyan community are banding together in an effort to track down a Northeastern University student who has now been missing for more than two weeks. Dennis Njoroge, a 21-year-old student at the school, has been missing since Nov. 29, police at his school said. Community members have begun holding daily meetings in Worcester and Boston, organizing a search effort and hoping for Njoroge’s safe return. “We meet every day and we have prayers in our house,” said Tony

Mathu, a family friend who is leading the awareness campaign. His family has set up a Facebook page called “Help us bring Dennis home.” By Monday, donors had given $1,000 to a GoFundMe fund-raiser for the search. This weekend, T-shirt-wearing volunteers posted missing person fliers around the city and handing them out on sidewalks. Community members from as far away as Minnesota have come to Massachusetts to help, Mathu told Metro. Njoroge’s mom, Helen Kihara-Bouchard, issued a plea to Njoroge in a video posted to a Kenyan community website on Thursday. “I’m talking to Dennis my son,” she said. “If you are there, if you see this, or if anybody sees Dennis, please tell him Mom

He frequently wore black pants, brown Timberland boots, an olive green jacket and a plain black baseball hat, according to the missing person fliers. The Northeastern Police Department has asked anyone with information to contact Det. Regina Coppa at 617-373-4880.

In a statement, Northeastern’s Vice President of Student Affairs Madeleine Estabrook said previously the school was “extremely concerned about Njoroge’s disappearance. “University officials, including NUPD, have been working closely and around the clock with city and state law enforcement officers, as well as with Dennis’ family, in hopes of finding him safe.

Mandatory Islam class? Court to decide The Supreme Court will decide whether forcing someone to attend a class on religion is a violation of the First Amendment. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

nate.homan@metro.us

The state’s highest court will consider whether a woman can be forced to attend a class on Islam as part of her punishment after being convicted of tossing a Muslim woman down a flight of stairs. Daisy Obi, 73, a pastor of the Adonai Bible Center and a landlord in Somerville, was convicted of assault and battery in 2014. She is also said to have cursed the woman

whom she assaulted and her children, allegedly screaming to them about the evils of Islam and how they were doomed to burn in hell, according to UniversalHub.com. A Somerville District Court judge sentenced her to two years in prison, but suspended 18 months of that sentence on several conditions, one of which was that she attend a class on Islam at the Harvard Divinity School or the Islamic Society of Boston. The judge also required her to tell any potential tenants looking to live at her Pinckney Street triple-decker about her conviction, which came after at least two other tenants obtained

protective orders against her for allegedly abusive behavior. Obi’s attorneys claim in court papers filed on Monday that forcing Obi to attend these classes is a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits government bodies from forcing any religion

religious. The judge singles out the Muslim faith for Dr. Obi to learn about. The judge singled out Muslim people that ‘need to be respected.’” First Amendment and criminal defense attorney Harvey Silverglate agreed. “I think it’s a clear violation of the First Amendment,” Silverglate said. “This is a direct violation of a 1943 Supreme Court precedent where the state of West Virginia tried to educate students in patriotism, and imposed a rule that they must pledge the flag. how to act, not on how to think.” The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office responded by saying that the requirement to attend a class on Islam is “reasonably related to the probationary goals.” “The purpose of requiring the defendant to enroll in a course to understand Islam has a legitimate purpose of deterring future violence against those practicing Islam and encourages her to better understand others, so that she may conform her conduct to anti-discrimination laws.”

But Obi said she will fight this decision. “It is against my First Amendment rights,” Obi, a 73-year-old NigerianAmerican, said. “I have never hurt anyone and I want this to be known. I took a class on Islam when I was in jail for several weeks. But you don’t do this in America, you do not go and ask an imam to do the same in a Christian class.” Obi’s attorney said that her office was not issuing any statements to the press. The hearing is scheduled for January.

Jury to decide Chism’s fate A jury began weighing the fate of a teenager accused of raping and murdering his high school math teacher, after his lawyer and a prosecutor painted starkly contrasting portraits of him in closing statements at his trial on Monday. Attorneys for Philip Chism, 16, have not disputed that he murdered the teacher, Colleen Ritzer, at suburban Danvers High School in October 2013, but have argued that he was not criminally responsible because he suffered from severe mental illness. The prosecution portrayed Chism’s actions as premeditated and intentionally cruel. He is being tried as an adult. Prosecutors contend that Chism raped Ritzer, 24, killed her by cutting her throat with a box cutter and bundled her body off campus in a recycling container. He is also accused of taking Ritzer’s credit card, which prosecutors said he used to buy fast food and a ticket to a movie at a mall. Defense attorney Denise Regan recalled the testimony of a psychiatrist who said that Chism was obeying voices in his head when he killed Ritzer. “The evidence is clear that Philip Chism has

suffered from an undiagnosed psychotic disorder — most likely early onset schizophrenia — from the time he was young,” Regan said. But Essex County prosecutor Kate McDougall pointed to a series of school surveillance videos that show Chism acting methodically and carefully on the day of the murder, including bringing three separate tote bags to school, one of which, prosecutors said, contained a box cutter, gloves and a mask. “There is overwhelming evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Philip Chism was not suffering from a mental disease or defect on Oct. 22, 2013,” McDougall said. “He had a goal, a terrible, terrible purpose and he played it out in the woods.” REUTERS

BRIEF Officials ‘reluctant’ to drive more money into Green Line extension Two members of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors on Monday said they are “reluctant” to put more money toward the Green Line Extension project and transportation officials unanimously supported a resolution that keeps project cancellation a major possibility. This summer, transportation officials announced the estimated cost of the trolley extension through Somerville and into Medford had jumped from $2 billion to $3 billion and the MBTA estimated $742 million in “sunk costs” even if the state decides to cancel the project. Members of the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board and the MassDOT Board indicated major reluctance toward chipping in more than the roughly $1 billion initially laid out, in addition to about $1 billion from the Federal Transit Administration. “They’re basically saying it’s a good investment for the commonwealth at $1 billion, but it’s not a good investment at more than that amount of commonwealth dollars,” Pollack said after members of both boards unanimously approved the resolution. Those holding the pursestrings for the state said they would be reluctant to contribute additional Massachusetts taxpayer dollars for the increased project cost.

This latest Bieber dating rumor is a real doozy

Tim Gunn does not think the Kardashians make it work Speaking of the Kardashians, Tim Gunn is taking aim once again at Kim Kardashian and her family, and he’s even dragging Kanye West into it this time. “I’m always saying to young people and actually even to adults, I don’t care what you wear as long as you don’t dress like a Kardashian. It’s vulgar, period,” Gunn tells Confidential. “But that’s what they are. I believe that their place in history will be because of this phenomenon that really is about nothing. This is one I certainly did not see coming. In what could possibly just be a case of some tabloid editor playing around with the celebrity gossip Magnetic Poetry set, Justin Bieber is now rumored to be making kissy-kissy with … Kourtney Kardashian? I think I read that right. The 21-year-old Canadian serial apologist and the 36-year-old recently single reality TV star were spotted hitting up a club in L.A. together and departing in the same SUV. And according to CNN, a source says that they were “making out,” so there you go. Bieber, however, has also been spotted squiring a mystery blonde around town — and on a yachting excursion — but the gossip is that he and the Kardashian who isn’t Kim or Khloe are “casually” seeing each other. In news that will make you feel old, Mariah Carey’s holiday hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” just turned 20. And since its release, it has been played practically on loop every holiday season. But now it has been topped as the most played holiday song, and you might be surprised who dethroned the Christmas queen. According to PlayNetwork, which generates playlists for

hundreds of stores across the country, The Shins’ cover of Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is now the most played holiday song, bumping Carey down to No. 2. Christina Aguilera’s “Christmas Time” rounds out the top three. While it’s hard to believe anyone could take Mariah Carey down, 20 years is a pretty epic run. EMILY LAURENCE

‘The Voice’ finale cheat sheet Here’s how to sound like you know what you’re talking about if you’ve never watched the show. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

An estimated 13 million people are going to be tuning in for the finale of “The Voiceâ€? tonight, but what if you’re going to be one of them and you haven’t been keeping up with the show all season? You don’t want to sound like an idiot. To help you out, we’ve broken down the mechanics of the hugely popular singing competition so that you can keep up during your viewing party and totally sound like you know a Nadjah Nicole from a Regina Love. Â

The many stages of the voicing

It’s been a long road since Season 9 premiered back in September, with hours and hours of televised singing behind us. If you’re trying to sound knowledgeable, each segment of the show’s run has a helpful name, so write some of these down. First, there were the Blind Auditions, which is really the gimmick that sets the show apart: The coaches face away from the stage as contestants sing, with the initial reactions based solely on their, well, voice.

These are your judges. Or coaches. Or something. And the chairs spin. TYLER GOLDEN/NBC

After the initial auditions, the coaches assemble their teams and head into The Battles, in which coaches pit members of their own teams against each other to whittle down the roster to 24 contestants in total. Then they head into The Knockouts, which is pretty much the same as The Battles except with more faux drama. Finally, it’s time for the Live Shows, when the home audience gets to vote. During the Live Playoffs, contestants also put their performances on iTunes, and if they crack the iTunes Top 10, their scores go up. Contestants start dropping like flies until the Semifinals, after which we end up with four singers vying for the title of the one with the most voice. Or something.

The people who do the voicing At first glance, the sheer number of singers on “The Voiceâ€? might seem daunting, but we’re down to just four vying for $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group. If anybody asks, here’s what you should say about each of them.  Jordan Smith: “That dude’s version of ‘Somebody to Love’ legit slayed me. He should always have that choir behind him.â€?  Barrett Baber: “He’s good and all, but I’m just not feeling the dad vibe. But did you know he survived a plane crash? How cool is that?â€?  Emily Ann Roberts: “Doing a Dolly Parton number the week that Dolly Parton was on the show was a bold choice.â€? Â

Jeery Austin: “I’d be more comfortable rooting for him if someone could talk to him about how his hair is too tall.â€?

The people who judge the voicing The four famous faces in the big red spinning chairs may look like judg-

es and act like judges, but don’t call them judges. On “The Voice, they’re coaches. Contestants get divvied up among them onto teams, with each coach representing a different corner of the pop landscape. (They also tend to take to the stage themselves quite often, which is one of the benefits of having actual successful pop stars on your show — and a great way to pad out an hour or two of live television.)  Adam Levine: The Maroon 5 frontman is the de facto rocker of the bunch, and his remaining team member, Jordan Smith, is one of the favorites to win.  Blake Shelton: If it’s a little bit country, it’s Team Shelton. He’s also got two contestants in the final four — Emily Ann Roberts and Barrett Baber — which says a lot about

the show’s enduring red state appeal.  Gwen Stefani: The No Doubt singer handles the pop-centric side of things, and she almost didn’t have anyone in the finale until Jeremy Austin snagged a spot via the Instant Save. He should really thank the good people of Twitter for that one.  Pharrell Williams: Who doesn’t love Pharrell? America, apparently, since none of Team Pharrell’s 12 contestants from the course of this season made it into the finale. Awkward.

wellbeing MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY

Right about now, you’re probably starting to wonder whether the holiday season is really worth it — all the joy seems to come with just as much stress. Before the gratifying feeling of watching loved ones unwrap gifts, there is the hassle of buying them; before gathering together to celebrate, there are huge year-end deadlines to tackle at work; and the joy of renewal on Jan. 1 mingles with the regrets of everything that didn’t get accomplished in 2015. Trying to relax in December can seem next to impossible. And while this has been the year of meditation, sitting alone with your thoughts is not everyone’s idea of a relaxing exercise. We’ve got some other ways to find your Zen and keep the season bright.

Floating Imagine shutting out the world and letting the borders between you and reality dissolve — this is floating, where you immerse yourself in silence and salt water inside a soundproof, dark pod. “I’m sort of addicted to distraction. I normally hate to be alone with my thoughts, but for whatever reason it’s just fun to be in the tank,” says David Leventhal of Lift/Next Level Floats in Brooklyn. The chambers have about 10 inches of water that’s heated to body temperature, where you’re meant to float for an hour — or eight, as Leventhal recently did — without any physical sensations, allowing

the mind to “expand in other directions,” he says. The high concentration of Epsom salt will naturally buoy you and keep your skin from getting pruney; you may even feel not just mentally but physically more relaxed as your body absorbs magnesium, which helps with circulation and lowering inflammation.

Sound healing If you’ve ever felt pumped up by music, you already know it can affect your mood. But maybe you’ve also tried meditation to the sounds of a babbling brook and felt only an urge to go to the bathroom. Sound therapy uses instruments common in meditation practices — Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks and bells — but played live, their vibrations are just as vital as the sound they make. A new method, vibroacoustic therapy, adds a water-filled cushion that has various vibraibra tion settings that claim to improve circulation while lowering blood pressure, and can be adjusted depending on patients’ physical and mental needs.

The last time you picked up a coloring book, your fine motor skills were probably being graded by a kindergarten teacher. A couple of decades later, this simple joy has been reimagined way beyond coloring by numbers into a new trend of adult coloring books with intricate patterns, from rainforests to mandalas, designed to help grown-ups destress. The healing power of art — to express emotions and even relieve physical pain — has long been used to benefit everyone from those undergoing cancer treatment to the mentally ill. But anyone can benefit from the simple joy of creativity, focusing on something instead of the many worries and distractions of the day, and the satisfaction of finishing a project. It can also be a more structured creative outlet for people who may not feel like they have artistic talent, while allowing others to create their own designs.

HIGHER EDUCATION

11

Will college actually be affordable one day? U.S. universities and colleges should expect to see slow tuition growth next year, according to a report released Thursday by Moody’s Investors Service. Higher education institutions have suffered the weakest tuition growth in the history of the survey. Moody’s predicts tuition revenue will grow only about 2 percent this year. That may sound all right — after all, it’s not like revenue is declining — but it’s a significant departure from the boom years of 2005 to 2013. Back then, schools saw net tuition grow more than 5 percent annually. Compare that to now, when the tuition growth rate is under 3 percent for two-thirds of all public universities. That’s partly because of state-imposed limits to keep tuitions low, but also because of student enrollments that are either flat or declin-

Busy life? We get it. Tuition revenue will grow about 2 percent this year, a far cry from the booming years of 5 percent annual growth. ISTOCK

ing. Meanwhile, 44 percent of private universities are slashing price tags by more than half. There is an increasing divide between schools with national brands and strong student pipelines and those without. Law schools and other universities that cater to niche markets are most exposed to volatile swings in revenue, for example. Regional distinctions persist as well.

Overall, 40 percent of universities reported lower enrollments this fall than five years ago. To ease the fiscal stress, many schools have turned to recruiting international students who can pay full tuition. But, as Moody notes, such a strategy is hardly “a panacea, given the relatively small portion of total enrollment and increasing competition for these students. REUTERS

C’S NEED A SIGNATURE WIN OPINION

MATT BURKE @Burke_Metro

We got one of those cool atmospheres at TD Garden last Friday night. We’ll get another one Tuesday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) when LeBron and the Cavs arrive to play the C’s. But relatively soon, the Celtics need to make sure there’s a vibe each and every night in their home arena. The in-house musician can’t always rely on the visiting rock star to bring the energy level up. Yup, we’re well aware that the 2015-16 Celtics are far from great. But in the Celtics’ slow evolution into a great team (most C’s backers think it’s coming in the next few years), there needs to be a few signature wins along the way. The C’s were oh-so-

close to nabbing that signature win of the Brad Stevens era last Friday in the double-OT loss to the Warriors. They played with great energy and their play that night tired out the best team in the NBA, so much so that the Warriors’ unbeaten streak

came to an end hours later in Milwaukee. “Good job! Good effort! as that famed Miami Heat fan once said. At some point, though, these “nice tries need to pay off in the form of a big win for Boston. By my count, the Celt-

ics have had five “main event games in the Stevens era. There was last Friday against Golden State. And the four playoff games last year against the Cavs. The C’s came horseshoes-close on several occasions, but didn’t win any of ’em. There

have been some encouraging victories this season for sure. The C’s more or less got old friend Kevin McHale axed in Houston when they won by 16 points on the road in midNovember. Wins over the Thunder (minus Kevin Durant), Hawks, Wizards,

Heat, Bulls and Hornets have been nice as well. But if the Celtics are to be taken seriously as a top two or three seed in the East (which many people are projecting them to be), there needs to be a “Lead on ‘SportsCenter’ type of victory between now and the spring. The Celtics will be getting a well-rested Cavs team on Tuesday as LeBron and Co. haven’t played since routing the Magic in Orlando last Friday night, 111-76. The Celtics haven’t played since beating the Hornets 98-93 last Saturday, so there will be none of that back-to-back night witchery going on that this season’s Celtics have mastered. The Celtics are just going to have to beat Cleveland straight-up on Tuesday. The big-game atmosphere will be there. But so far, it’s an environment in which the Stevens-era Celtics haven’t exactly thrived in.
