response after a storm is small, the bulk of it involving quickly digging out commuters’ vehicles before rush hour. In the past few days, Barry said, he brought a marketing expert to help lead the coming push to recruit workers and to

Possibly more than anyone in Boston, Chris Barry is really hoping for snow. The founder and programmer behind Yeti has been quietly tapping away at the code behind the app, which aims to connect snow-shovelers with city-dwellers who would rather not have to shovel out their cars — and is probably the most anticipated smartphonedriven service of the season. Originally shooting for a launch date at the end of January, Barry told Metro on Sunday he hopes to launch Yeti in mid-February. “Which is later than I intended, but as it turns out, this winter has been pretty mild, he said. It’s a simple concept — Barry said he got the idea at the height of Snowmageddon in 2015 when he spotted his car parked in Southie buried under 3 feet of snow — but there are lots of particulars to work out before launch, he said. For one, he’ll likely need to recruit a small army of freelance workers to wield shovels and hit the streets. He didn’t say how many he antici-

stoke interest in the product. He hopes to finish up the legal prep-work for bringing on so many contractors so quickly by the end of this week, he said. But before now, much of the marketing for Yeti has been through the media. In a town collectively frustrated after a hellish winter, it seems his idea caught on based on concept alone and word spread fast. At this point, his reputation precedes him, he said. A friend of a friend he met at Saturday night’s

Patriots game, he said, already knew all about his company. “I was a little caught of guard,” he said. “This started out as a side project, but everyone was really interested in talking about it.” Going live so late in the season means he will h a v e just a few weeks to prove the concept and collect data, answering a few of the questions behind making Yeti work the way it’s intended: How many cars can one person shovel per storm? How long does it take to clear out a car after 6 inches of snow? How about 18? Will college students make up a good chunk of the shoveling team? Might that reduce wait times near student enclaves? As for pricing, Barry still won’t say how much the service will cost. He did, however, say he plans on adjusting the price for the amount of snowfall for each storm. He said at least for this season, Yeti wouldn’t institute “surge” pricing — jacking up rates when demand is especially high, the way Uber does when usage spikes on busy weekend nights, during holidays or when it rains. Then, the last step is

making the app available on the App Store (for now, it will only be available on iOS, he said, and service will be limited to Boston). There are other services that hook up laborers with those willing to pay for help. B a r r y himself pointed to companies Plowz & Mowz and TaskRabbit as examples. But none that he knows of have tackled specifically the problem of car de-snowing the way he plans to, or with all the features he’s cooked up (shovelers will take before and after photos of cars, sent to their owners in real time). In the meantime, Barry, a first-time developer who works by day in tech consulting, said he is “totally confident” he and his small team can bring Yeti to market by the time real snow finally comes to Boston. The final ingredient, then? Snow. Barry said he starts each day checking up on the long-term forecast, and hopes the city sees two or three big storms between launch and season’s end. “I’ve got to be the only person in Boston praying for snow just about every day,” he said.

Two Boston-area cities see over 40 overdoses in less than a week Two cities on two different sides of Boston saw a massive spike in overdoses over the past week, officials said. Brockton saw 45 heroin overdoses between Jan. 13 and Jan. 17, The Brockton Enterprise reported. On average, Brockton sees about three overdoses per day, police said. None of the overdoses in last week’s uptick were fatal, according to Mayor Bill Carpenter’s official Facebook page, and many people were revived via Narcan. “Our first responders are doing incredible work, no deaths during these past [four]

days,” Carpenter wrote on the public page. “Soon, we will roll out the Champion Plan, a Gloucester-type model, that will assist those ready to seek treatment for their substance abuse disorder.” But Gloucester saw four overdoses in a 24-hour span, according to Police Chief Leonard Campanello. Narcan was used to revive them. “Gloucester had four overdoses in the last 24 hours,” Campanello wrote on the department’s Facebook page on Monday morning. “That’s the bad news. The good news is all were brought back to us by the increased availability and proliferation of Narcan.” METRO

Miley Cyrus flashes old engagement ring It looks like that whole rumored reunion with ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth is coming along nicely, if Miley Cyrus’ latest choice in jewelry is any indication. The outlandish singer has been spotted sporting a rock that looks suspiciously like the engagement ring Hemsworth gave her that she wore until their split in 2013. Cyrus arrived in NYC on Sunday and stepped off the plane wearing the item in question, glittering in the flashbulbs as she shielded her face from the paparazzi. And then

the next day she posted a photo on Instagram prominently displaying the ring, though her caption was more in reference to her strawberry-themed outfit. So it looks like she likes having it on. How much should we be reading into this?

Jay-Z and Beyonce moving back to NYC So are Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin actually dating? Not so much, at least according to her dad, third-most-employable Baldwin brother Stephen Baldwin. TMZ caught up with him outside LAX to quiz him about his daughter’s doings, and Pops insists that “dating” is the wrong word for it. “There’s no label on it.

Just friends,” Stephen says. But apparently the proud father would be totally into it if they did want to date, because he’s all about the Biebs. “Mr. Bieber is a wonderful young man, hugely talented,” Stephen says. “[He’s] got a whole lot more success ahead of him.” And who would know more about success than Stephen Baldwin?

Good news, New Yorkers. You may soon have everyone’s favorite probably-Illuminati power couple back on home turf, as Jay Z and Beyonce are reportedly shopping around for a new NYC nest in which to land, according to Star magazine. Blue Ivy’s parents have been spending much of the last year living it up in a rental property in Los Angeles, but

apparently it’s time to get back into an Empire state of mind, as they’re “definitely” scoping out some new digs. “Although nothing has been confirmed they have been looking in New York,” a source says. “They’ve said that they want to be closer to their family on the East Coast. They know that they need places in both L.A. and N.Y.” Sure! Who doesn’t?

Olivia Munn ignores the haters The actress talks “Ride Along 2” and the crazy ways she gets in shape. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Olivia Munn once got slammed from some outlets, including Jezebel, for being the pretty comedian during her stint on “The Daily Show.” Now she gets heat from sports journalists who blame her for every fumble boyfriend Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers makes on the field. “People can say really nice things, and people can say really horrible things. The key is I don’t believe any of the bad stuff, and I don’t believe any of the good,” says Munn, 35. “If I believe the good stuff, I have to believe the bad.” Another coping mechanism: hitting the gym hard. In the comedy “Ride Along 2,” she plays a detective working with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. And although that’s a part-time action film, it set her up for her role as Psylocke in the forthcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Munn talks to us about life in the Green Bay and doing pushups midair. You studied journalism and used to be a reporter before you became an entertainer. Do you miss it? I love storytelling. Journalism is great because it’s not about you. I love asking questions, and when I meet people, I just want to sit and ask them a million things. It comes in handy. I’ve

Olivia Munn plays a detective alongside Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in “Ride Along 2.” QUANTRELL D. COLBERT

called some journalists out on social media, and it brought back my own feelings of being a journalist. I would end up doing more research than the people who are actually working for media, who are supposed to be highly respected and trusted. I can’t help but have that kind of brain, where I want to ask questions, want to find something out. How have you taken to life among sports culture? I live in Green Bay a lot of the time, and I love my life there. It’s such a great community, with the teammates and their wives. I get such great support there. It’s a family. You’ve spent the last handful of years all

over the map. This is at least part action, as is “X-Men: Apocalypse.” How was it picking up new skills? For “Ride Along 2,” I was able to practice holding and feeling comfortable with a gun, and how to be safe with a gun. But when it came to “X-Men,” that was completely different. Everything stepped up. I started working out six, seven hours a day when I wasn’t working, and doing taekwondo, doing swords. That was my choice, to work out that much. For the character to be lethal, I had to feel that capable and strong. It’s something that’s stayed with me. I want to keep it up, because when you feel strong and capable, it’s an addictive feeling — to have this strength you

didn’t have before. There were actually photos of you exercising on a plane. That was taken by a friend of mine — not my trainer, but a trainer. We had been running around everywhere and hadn’t had a chance to work out. So she was like, “We’re gonna do it on a plane!” It’s hard on a plane. It can’t be easy keeping your balance. Balance wasn’t that hard. It was the altitude. [Chuckles] I was like, “I’m getting winded really fast!”

‘Awkward Sex... and the City’: still awkward, but with new member The comedy tour is coming — this time with a man. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

We can all agree the best thing to come out of an awkward sexual encounter is the opportunity to tell your friends about it. But what about a room full of strangers? It’s what comedian Natalie Wall does on a regular basis — and she brings a rotating batch of fellow comedians to do it with her. Her show, “Awkward Sex... and the City, features Moth-style storytelling of the comedy troupe’s most embarrassing stories from between the sheets. Wall, who started the concept as a personal blog in New York before branching out to the stage, says she’s working to make the show more socially involved and

aware, and hopes her embarrassing tales promote accepting, sex-positive culture and education. “When the show started, it was more about awkward sex, which is exactly what it says in the title, but I feel it’s become so much more inclusive, she says. “It’s for learning about different types of sex and relationships, and how all of those are OK. This tour, (fittingly) titled “Cold May Cause Shrinkage, features a brand new set of stories by Meghan O’Malley, Carly Ann Filbin, Bobby Hankinson, Emmy Harrington and newbie Anita Flores. Hankinson, the show’s first and only man, is also a recent add to the longstanding ladies only show. “It was needed, Wall said. “It was starting to feel a little one-sided. As for the awkwardness, Wall says the stories range from “first times to “foot fetishes to going home with a guy and

realizing he still lives with his parents. Her own awkward story involves a lie about period cramps and diarrhea while at the home of a new lover — but we won’t spoil the ending. Sure, it’s pretty awkward, but Wall reminds us: That’s a good thing. “Sex in itself is awkward and it’s not often portrayed awkwardly in movies, she says. “It’s been a good outlet for people to be like ‘OK, cool. It’s normal that my sex life isn’t perfect.’ I think [awkward sex is] one of those memories a lot of people repress, so when people hear can hear a million other stories, it makes them way more comfortable with their sexuality. “Awkward Sex... and the City comes to the Oberon (2 Arrow St., Cambridge) on Jan. 21. It took Australian electronica band Miami Horror more than five years to release a follow-up to their buzzy debut album “Illumination,â€? but the five members were by no means taking it easy. The album was so successful that they’ve been touring nonstop as well as working on various side-projects such as bands Wunder Wunder and All The Colors. “When we got back in the studio we tried so hard to make something that didn’t sound plain, says frontman Benjamin Plant, 28 about their sophomore release “All Possible Futures.â€? Here the singer talks L.A. vs. Melbourne and how to keep the band together. Is the music scene in Australia really dierent from here in the States? [Music fans] are a bit more loyal in America. In Australia, there’s always a new sound, which can be a good thing, but there’s a high turnover of young artists who just come and go, so that can kind of be a bad thing. Sometimes you see music that’s really good and the band gets a lot of hype, but then it drops. You recorded the album in Melbourne as well as Los Angeles. Did that inuence the sound at all? Yeah. Miami Horror’s album “All Possible Futures is out now.

I mentioned, the music scene there makes you want to stay relevant a little more, where as LA was more of a dreamy fantasyland that we let impact the music and try to make classic songs. You went to ďŹ lm school before starting Miami Horror. Does that come in handy now as a musician? It helps with the story element of music, thinking about the bigger picture and the concept of an album as opposed to just a song. How have your friendships with the other guys in the band changed over time? Being in a band is a really weird thing. Back when we started, there were tensions and attitudes with some people. Jess Glynne’s really big lesson The 26-year-old British singer-songwriter is looking for depth in dance music. SEAN L MALONEY @SeanLMaloney letters@metro.us

Jess Glynne is having a very surreal year. In fact: “It’s very surreal, very, very, very surreal,” Glynne, 26, says. In just the past four months, the British singer-songwriter has released her stateside debut, “I Cry When I Laugh,” broken the Billboard Hot 100 and watched that very same album go double platinum in her homeland. “To enter 2016 with a double platinum is probably one of the best things anyone could wish for.” She also took home a 2015 Grammy for her single with Clean Bandit, “Rather Be,” and has racked up hundreds of millions of YouTube views with powerful, soulful dance anthems. But more importantly, she’s a member of the vanguard of young women rewriting and reshaping the pop landscape. Weaving narrative as strong as her singing voice, Glynne’s “I Cry” makes a bold declaration that dance music and song craft don’t have to be mutually exclusive, a lesson she learned

through trial and error. “When I was young and getting really into music, I would listen to my parents’ cassettes,” she says. “If I listened to a Mariah Carey song, I’d break it down, see where it rhymed and what went where and then write my own version.” “I tried out so many different genres and different sounds. You develop a sound and a thing that you want to be the thing.” As it’s turned out, Glynne’s “thing” is an encapsulation of R&B’s influence on dance culture, a dynamic intersection of soul, gospel and house. But big records require the support of big production teams and big names, and Glynne had to learn to loosen the reins and cede some control of her songs to her collaborators. “[Clean Bandit’s] ‘Rather Be’ was a really big lesson for me,” says Glynne. “Originally I was against doing it, [but] it actually changed my view on singing someone else’s songs.” As result, “I Cry When I Laugh,” out last August from Atlantic, is an album of rich, dynamic interplay between music and musicians. Standouts include her fifth No. 1 single, “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself,” and “Saddest Vanilla,” a collaboration with Scottish rock-soul

singer Emeli Sande. When asked for advice for young women with dreams of songwriting, Glynne doesn’t hesitate for a moment: “Just get to it. Listen to songs, listen to your favorite songs, listen to how they are, how they’re structured and to the stories being told,” she says. “Take guidance from that, take notes.”

Pats are the class of the final four New England is once again the favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

The Patriots wasted little time answering major questions this past weekend against the Chiefs. On the first drive of the game, Tom Brady completed two passes to Julian Edelman, three passes (including a TD) to Rob Gronkowski and one pass to Danny Amendola. Rank them however you choose, but those three are Brady’s favorite targets and all of them had major injury suspicions heading into the playoffs. The fact that all of them seemingly made it through Playoff Game No. 1 all healthy is a minor miracle given the Pats’ injury luck this season.

Know this: That healthy Pats unit we saw on Saturday is the best team remaining in this tournament. None of the other three teams left wowed anyone in the divisional round. The Panthers came ohso-close to blowing a 31-0 lead in the span of 30 football minutes against Seattle. The Cardinals’ offense looked decidedly “blah in their win over the Packers as they ran for just 40 total yards and Carson Palmer threw two picks. And Steelers — Broncos was as ugly a playoff game as you will ever find. Denver did not score a touchdown until there were three minutes left in the fourth quarter and 2016 Peyton Manning made 2016 Alex Smith look like 2006 Peyton Manning by comparison. On Saturday, the Patriots sure as hell looked like they were playing possum during the final five weeks of the regular

season as they turned in the strongest performance of the final four teams. The 27 points the Patriots put up against KC was not on par with the

35.5 points per game they were averaging in the first seven weeks of the season. But anyone watching the 27-20 Pats win never thought the game was in doubt

for New England. It was pure control from start to finish, even with Kansas City clearly implementing a “keep the ball away from Brady strategy. The Chiefs won

the game’s time of possession, 37:51 to 22:09, but that’s about the only victory KC scored. It was assumed that Brady would throw the ball 50 times against KC going in, but he only had to throw it 42 times to get a line of 28 completions, 302 yards, two TDs, zero picks and a 103.5 passer rating. The Pats entered the divisional round as the No. 1 or No. 2 seed with the worst chance of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. In the span of one weekend, those odds have flipped. The defending champs are again the favorites.  Â
