PUERTO RICO DEBT

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said that while the Obama administration was ready to do all it could to help debt-ridden Puerto Rico, only Congress could deliver truly effective change. Lew, speaking in San Juan where he met with the island’s governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla, last week urged Congress to urgently pass legislation by the end of March to help the island, struggling with $70 billion debt. He has called for legislation to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debts paired with independent fiscal oversight. REUTERS
ALLENTOWN CORRUPTION

The city council of Allentown is expected to vote on Wednesday on a resolution expressing “no confidence” in Mayor Ed Pawlowski and urging him to resign as an FBI corruption investigation swirls around city hall. All seven city council members co-sponsored the nonbinding resolution, which would draw a line between Pawlowski, who has been mayor of Pennsylvania’s third-largest city for 10 years, and the rest of the city’s government. BRIEF Two Democrat Supreme Court judges received ‘Porngate’ emails Two more Supreme Court justices may have received offensive emails similar to those that led to the recent suspension of one of their colleagues and resignation of another. Justices Kevin Dougherty and Max Baer also received offensive emails, the Inquirer reported Wednesday.
The emails were reportedly sent by Justice Seamus McCaffery, who retired in 2014 after the Porngate scandal first began to break as Attorney General Kathleen Kane unveiled in court documents the offensive, pornographic and racist emails she discovered being swapped by judges, lawyers and cops on state email accounts. Justice Michael Eakin suspended by the state’s Judicial
Conduct Board last month after they reviewed emails he received on his private Yahoo account. The Inquirer reported Dougherty and Baer received emails from McCaffery between 2008 and 2010 that included offensive jokes that criticized immigrants, people of color, and welfare recipients. According to the Inquirer, one included a picture of a black man in colorful clothing and was captioned “pimpin.” Both judges
allegedly received a message that bashed illegal immigrants. Dougherty allegedly received three emails while on the bench in Family Court; Baer, a sitting justice, allegedly received 10 while on the Supreme Court. Both are Democrats. Eakin and McCaffery were Republicans. A state courts spokesman did not immediately respond to Metro’s request for a comment. SAM NEWHOUSE

Delco man charged in Web scam Vincent Cottrell allegedly hijacked a construction company website and pretended to be a contractor. JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Despite having paid nearly event cent back to a family he bilked for $52,000, a Delaware County man is facing jail time for his Internet scams. Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan announced charges of theft against 39-year old Vincent Cottrell of Drexel Hill on Wednesday. Whelan said Cottrell scammed homeowners James and Patricia Blaney into thinking he owned the J.D. Kelly Corporation, a contracting company they found on the Internet that offered construction services. According to the criminal complaint, in July of 2014, the Blaneys went searching on the Internet for a construction firm to build an addition onto their home in Drexel Hill and found a contractor named J.D. Kelly Corporation.
Whelan said Cottrell stole the identity of J.D. Kelly Corporation, took control of the contractor’s website, replaced the phone and posed as the president and CEO. “They knew all the red flags had gone up and they knew they had an issue with the contractor, they finally terminated services,” said Whelan. “Most of these cases don’t result in the contractor paying back the homeowner, but in this case, the contractor did make payments to the homeowner. Nevertheless, because of his egregious actions, and stealing the identity of J.D. Kelly and tricking [the Blaneys] into believing he was J.D. Kelly, without doing any work whatsoever, we decided to prosecute him. “Once you rob the bank, whether you give the money back or not, the crime has already been committed,” said Whelan. “The Blaneys are very happy we’re prosecuting this matter and happy to obtain restitution money.” Cottrell is also charged with identity theft and theft by deception. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2.

SEVERE SNOWSTORM Bolaris’ Weather Watch
JOHN BOLARIS @weathersavior
As this goes to print, computer models are converging on a high-impact winter storm that will strike the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic starting for the Northeast corridor by day’s end Friday and then working its way into New York City by Friday night and finally into Boston by early Saturday morning. The bull’s-eye seems to pointing toward D.C. to Philly to New York City and New Jersey with the potential for a severe impact. There is still the question of just how much of an impact will be felt into Boston, as models still diverge on the exact northern extent of this soon-tobe-intense nor’easter. Blizzard watches are already flying across our nation’s capital, as it will get whacked first and possibly the hardest. This is what we do know as of 1 p.m. Wednesday (this will be refined and adjusted as we get closer to crunch time). The set-up: By Friday morning a rapidly intensifying storm will be taking shape somewhere along the North Carolina coastline. An arctic high will be funneling down cold air into the system at the same time the Gulf Stream helps to fuel the storm, with a rapidly expanding heavy snow, sleet and rain shield

moving north. Snow will arrive in the D.C. region during the afternoon Friday. Snow will arrive in Philadelphia by the evening commute (between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.). Snow will arrive in NYC between 9 p.m. and midnight. Snow will arrive in Boston by daybreak Saturday. The best chances of snow mixing with rain and sleet will be from the I-95 corridor and points east.
If the storm reaches its full potential, 1 to 2 feet of snow could fall along or just west of the I-95 corridor from D.C. to Philly to New York City. Boston should remain all snow. The best chances of 12+ will be from just west of Philly to just northwest of New York City, and D.C. Coastal sections, especially the New Jersey and Delaware coastlines, will experience major tidal flooding, major beach erosion,

The storm will be an unusually long duration of at least 48 hours of high-impact weather. Blizzard conditions likely for the Northeast corridor. Visibilities will drop to whiteout condi-

Experts argue for women to have easier access to pill How easy it is — or not — for women to get it in the U.S. JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
Whether it’s a vacation abroad, a semester at sea or simply a night on the town and you forgot — obtaining birth control is not so easy for women in the United States — as it is in some other countries. Laws exist, opinions vary, and questions remain as to why women can only get certain types of birth control once a month or for a few months at a time, and if and how that can be changed. Mark DeFrancesco is president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
and has a lot to say about state laws allowing pharmacists to prescribe oral contraceptives. “Birth control is an essential part of women’s health care, and over-thecounter status would help more women benefit from the ability to control their own reproductive health, he said. “Of course, decades of use have proven that oral contraceptives are safe for the vast majority of women and that they are safer than many other medications that are already available over the counter. “This is not going to allow us to reach women who remained underserved by the current prescribing requirements.
Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for external medical affairs from Planned Parenthood, said that a woman who is planning a trip or a

They also offer protection against unplanned pregnancy for three, five or up to 12 years. “ M a n y women like not having to remember to take a pill every day or switch out a ring every month, said Cullins. “Once an IUD or implant is inserted, you can pretty much just forget about it. According to the ACOG, last month, Oregon became the first state to extend birth control prescribing rights to pharmacists. Depending on where you live, you might be eligible for a six- to 12-month supply of prescription birth control. Armed militants stormed a university in volatile northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 20 people and wounding dozens a little more than a year after the massacre of 134 students at a school in the area, officials said. A Pakistani Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the assault in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but an official spokesman later denied involvement, calling the attack “un-Islamic.â€? A security official said the death toll could rise to as high as 40 at Bacha Khan University in the city of Charsadda. The army said it had concluded operations to clear the campus six hours after the attack began, and that four gunmen were dead. A spokesman for rescue workers, Bilal Ahmad

Husain reportedly shot back at the gunmen with a pistol to allow his students to flee. Many of the dead were apparently shot in the head execution-style, TV footage showed. The militants, using the cover of thick, wintry fog, scaled the walls of the university Wednesday morning before entering buildings and opening fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels, police said.Â

The gunmen attacked as the university prepared to host a poetry recital Wednesday afternoon to commemorate the death anniversary of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a popular ethnic Pashtun independence activist after whom the university is named. Vice Chancellor Fazal Rahim told reporters the university teaches over 3,000 students and was hosting an additional 600 visitors for the poetry recital. REUTERS

Researchers: Possible planet beyond Neptune
BRIEF
Artist’s rendering shows the distant view from ‘’Planet Nine’’ back toward the sun, in this handout photo provided by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California. CALTECH/IPAC HANDOUT
The solar system may host a ninth planet that is about 10 times bigger than Earth and orbiting far beyond Neptune, according to research published Wednesday. Computer simulations show the mystery planet, if it exists, would orbit about 20 times farther away from the sun than Earth, said astronomers with the California Institute of Technology
in Pasadena. So far, the planet has not been observed directly. “It’s a pretty substantial chunk of our solar system that’s still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting, astronomer Mike Brown said in a statement. The research is published in this week’s Astronomical Journal. Russian space agency scales back plans as crisis shrinks budget Russia will spend 30 percent less on its space program in the next decade and scale back a slew of projects to save money in the face of tanking oil prices and a falling rouble, a plan presented by the country’s space agency showed Wednesday, According to the blueprint, presented to Russian media by Igor Komarov, head of space agency Roscosmos, the space program budget for 2016-2025 will be cut to 1.4 trillion roubles ($17.36 billion), down from 2 trillion rubles. That means plans to launch a manned flight to the moon will be pushed back five years — to 2035 from 2030 — and development of a reusable space rocket meant to be built by 2025 will, for now, be abandoned. “Russia is certain to implement this project, but at the moment the launch of a booster rocket with a reusable first stage is not economically viable, local media cited Komarov as saying. A Roscosmos spokesman told Reuters the agency would return to the matter after 2025. The U.S. has already successfully tested similar vehicles. Re-using the first stages of rockets designed to return to Earth after launch would make commercial rocket launches cheaper. A cosmodrome under construction in Russia’s Far East will also suffer under the slimmed-down program. It will now get only one launch pad instead of the two originally planned. REUTERS

Katie Holmes not a fan of the Internet
Pals say Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are doomed All signs point to Miley Cyrus barreling right back into her relationship with exfiancé Liam Hemsworth, and her friends aren’t thrilled. First the exes spent the holidays together with his family in Australia, then she started sporting her engagement ring again just as she was spotted driving a U-Haul over to his Malibu home. So what could possibly go wrong? According to her friends, who think Cyrus is crazy and the relationship is “doomed,” a whole lot. “Liam already broke Miley’s heart once, and a lot of people around her are warning her that he will do it again,” a source tells Radar Online. “But she is not listening to anyone right now.” But friends be damned, how are things going over in Hemsworth-Cyrus Land? “They needed time apart to realize how much they love each other and want to be together. They’ve lived a lot in the last year few years and think things will be different,” a source tells E! News. “They wanted to work on rebuilding things before they went public. They are both very happy about where things are and going to see what happens.” Sure, why not?
@iamwandasykes This #FlintWaterCrisis is criminal. Looks like a SavetheChildren ad. If they can’t even get clean H2O, you know their schools are jacked!
What did Katie Holmes learn from playing a woman with bipolar disorder in her new film, “Touched With Fire?” That the Internet is terrible. Wait, hear me out on this. As the former Mrs. Tom Cruise explains to More magazine, “I gained a greater empa-

But that’s over there.’ Unfortunately, we’re quick to judge, especially in this day of social media and the Internet — which I think is an ugly-maker. Everybody looks ugly when they’re on the Internet. But I wouldn’t want to live a flat life, with no pain.” Actually, Ms. Holmes, I’ll have you
know that some people look really, really cute on the Internet, so stop judging. But I will concede that “ugly-maker” is a great phrase, if a bit of a Mentos ripoff.
Tyra Banks’ ‘FABLife’ canceled after one season
It looks like Tyra Banks’ latest daytime venture, “The FABLife,” couldn’t really survive without her, as two months after she announced her departure, Disney-ABC Domestic Television is canceling, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “We’re extremely proud of everyone involved with the show,” company President Janice Marinelli says. “We are especially appreciative of our talented and dynamic co-hosts Chrissy Teigen, Joe Zee, Leah Ashley and Lauren Makk.” But it would’ve been better if Banks were still doing it, right? Hey, maybe Banks knew something we didn’t.

Spilling secrets on ‘London Spy’ Novelist Tom Rob Smith reveals his unique approach to TV drama and intrigue. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick
ned.ehrbar@metro.us
British writer Tom Rob Smith makes his first foray into writing for television with the twisting, mysterious “London Spy,â€? about a young Londoner (Ben Whishaw) whose hunt for the truth behind his lover’s murder opens a web of intrigue leading to British intelligence giant MI6. So what’s the secret to crafting a good mystery? A good love story, according to Smith. Your ďŹ rst work, “Child 44,â€? was a novel adapted into a movie. How did making this, which was a TV series from the start, change your approach to the material? I didn’t have any TV experience, but I knew that I wanted to tell the story and I knew it was TV. I knew it wasn’t film, and I also knew it wasn’t a book. It’s firstperson narrative through the eyes of the main character, played by Ben Whishaw, but he didn’t go to university. He’s an ordinary guy working a kind of dead-end job. He was never going to write it down or have a voice that would work on the page. He’s a visual

character. So I knew it was going to be TV. Is that a kind of intuition, knowing what each story is meant to be ďŹ rst? Yeah, I think it is. Afterwards you can pick apart why you thought that was the case, but there certainly is a gut feeling. A book I’m working on now — which will take forever because it’s enormous — probably could be something else, but it needs to be a book first, and I can’t quite explain it. How did you approach telling this story over several episodes? One of the things I love
about TV is you have more time. The conventional story — your partner is murdered and you take on the question of who murdered them — has been told countless times. With this, we have enough time to work out what their love story is without it being a shorthand. Love stories aren’t all the same — we fall in love for completely different reasons. I wanted to understand that these two people were both lost for very different reasons. I wanted us as an audience to really connect with them before we ripped them apart. What about getting into the MI6 world for this?
The series just wrapped up in the U.K. Is it strange to have it launching again so soon for a new audience over here? It’s the same, actually, with books. They’re always staggered. The truth is, they’re completely unpredictable. But I think the process of discovery is really exciting. I always hope that people fall in love with it and it will do really well, so there’s that feeling of great optimism at the beginning. And since it worked out in the U.K., I’m hoping it will get replicated.Â

There were two central mysteries at the heart of it: First, what happened? Was he murdered or was he actually involved in these sexual practices and did he go wrong? The second question is, who was he? Often in these stories, the lover is kind of a fixed point, unchanging throughout the whole thing. But I wanted that character to change across the series. In this investigation that Ben goes on, he gets closer to the person through all the different elements of who they are. That was the second part of the mystery, because I think that people are a mystery that we encounter every day.

Welcome to the Drake Delays moving to a new home means InterAct opens the season with its riskiest show. SHAUN BRADY @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
In a typical season, InterAct Theatre Company dedicates at least half its productions to new work, a risk-taking strategy that has come to be one of the company’s defining factors. But after 18 years at the Adrienne, InterAct is moving this season to its new home at the Drake and decided to play things a bit safer: Just one new work in a four-play season, to accompany its big move with a less stressful, more proven commodity.
BILL’S

Things didn’t quite work out that way. Construction delays necessitated a juggling of the schedule, meaning that the season started not last fall with George Brant’s “Grounded,” which had been tested in an off-Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor and starring Anne Hathaway. Instead, the theater’s unveiling will now come with “#therevolution,” the season’s sole world premiere. “We wanted to have a slightly less risky season so that we could concentrate on other things,” shrugs InterAct Producing Artistic Director Seth Rozin. “As it turns out, the play that we’re moving in with is by far our most complicated and risky play of the bunch.”
Risky in the sense that any unproven play is risky, but also because Kristoffer Diaz’s play offers “a lot of technical, stylistic, tonal, and dramaturgical challenges,” according to Rozin. While it’s proved challenging, a play like “#therevolution” may

Viva la #revolution
The hallway to the Proscenium Theatre at the Drake was left unpainted so audiences at the first shows could sign the wall. Artist Aaron Krolikowski created the background drawing based off the Drake’s storied history. INTERACT THEATRE COMPANY
also be the most appropriate way for InterAct to christen its new digs. “In some ways it worked out well in that it’s a play that represents very well all the things that we’re about: cham-
pioning new work, new voices, diversity and big ideas,” Rozin says. “Ultimately I feel good about it because it’s signaling that InterAct isn’t changing who we are when we go into our new space.”
The show “#therevolution,” as its hashtag-laden title implies, focuses on the satiric aftermath of a social media-driven revolution. The show stars Brett Ashley Robinson and Mary Tuomanen as two young women forced to grapple with the burden of power after leading an uprising. InterAct previously mounted a successful production of Diaz’s pro wrestling-themed “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity,” the only show since settling at the Adrienne where physical demands forced them to find an alternate venue. Like that production, “#therevolution” comes with staging demands that InterAct simply couldn’t have realized in its old home. Space is only one benefit, however; the move also gives the company more freedom to control all aspects of the audience experience, according to Rozin. The Drake will also provide a home for PlayPenn, Simpatico Theatre Project, Azuka Theatre and Inis Nua Theatre, making it “a spiritual and artistic hub for the new play community,” Rozin says.

Tim Robbins heads back to prison The Oscar-winner talks about his new drama “A Perfect Day and his acting troupe’s Prison Project. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Tim Robbins isn’t your typical message-mongering liberal. From “Bob Robertsâ€? and “Dead Man Walkingâ€? to the new “A Perfect Day,â€? the actorfilmmaker is attracted to complexity, sometimes even playing the bad guys. His character in “Dayâ€? is a good guy: He’s an aid worker (along with Benicio del Toro and Olga Kurylenko) in the Balkans in the mid-’90s, fighting bureaucratic red tape to help a village with a contamination problem. But he’s no saint. Like a lot of politicallythemed ďŹ lms you make, this isn’t merely about good messages. The fact that a script is dealing with an issue isn’t enough for me to say yes. It has to meet certain criteria as far as how it’s telling the story. From the
very start with my theater company, we would get material that reflects on society. We were always looking for what is ironic about them, what it is that’s humorous, and what is it about the other person’s point of view that is legitimate. It’s really important that your good intentions don’t lead you into a didacticism that would undermine the subject matter.
Tim Robbins plays an aid worker in the Balkans trying to save a village from water contamination in “A Perfect Day, now on VOD. IFC FILMS
Is that why you’ve often played characters who believe things you don’t, like the right-wing politician in “Bob Robertsâ€? or the Apartheid police oďŹƒcer in “Catch a Fireâ€?? Yes. And those are always very challenging. On “Catch a Fire,â€? part of my homework was hanging out with the guys who did the torturing and policing during Apartheid. You have to find the reasons
You’ve been busy lately with The Prison Project, which your troupe, The Actors’ Gang, launched in 2006. It gives inmates acting classes, and this year you’re expanding into eight prisons. America is quite bad at rehabilitating prisoners. We are bad at that. It’s getting better. I’ve found [the program] is truly transformative, not only for the prisoners but for
why people behaved in those abhorrent ways. I don’t think it gets you very far if you say, “Well, this guy’s just pure evil.

Did this subject become even more of interest to you after doing ďŹ lms about prisoners? It was the prison guards in “Shawshankâ€? who told me what was wrong with the prison system. These are conservative, salt-of-the-earth, probably Republican prison guards who were telling me there should be two separate prisons: one for violent offenders, and one for nonviolent offenders. The guards described prison as essentially crime school — for nonviolent offenders to maybe exit prison a violent offender.

Upping the steaks

WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY Urban Farmer makes a splash at the former Four Seasons. CAROLINE RUSSOCK @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
When the Four Seasons hotel shut its doors a little over a year ago, it took a not-so-little piece of Philadelphia dining history with it. For more than 30 years, the Fountain restaurant was the place to see and be seen, with a steady stream of politicians, socialites and all-around-famous Philadelphians flocking in for everything from weekday power breakfasts to latenight martinis. Turned around in record time, the hotel is now the Logan, a sleek addition to the Hilton family’s boutique-y Curio Collection, and the Fountain has been transformed into the Urban Farmer, a forward-thinking steakhouse concept from a Portland, Oregon-based restaurant group. This area of the city is certainly not lacking when it comes to steakhouse selection, but Urban Farmer’s goal is to
offer a fresh take on the winning formula. Shaking off the staid surroundings of the Fountain, the dining room has been outfitted with an open kitchen, an expansive bar and a blend of flea market-sourced art, pickle jar-lined walls and splashes of neon.
Pre-dinner drinks Decor aside, the first tipoff that Urban Farmer isn’t stuffy comes when you crack open the cocktail menu. The sizable list of concoctions features house specials like Farmer #4, a bracing blend of vodka, elderflower liqueur and lime juice over a cube of frozen hopped grapefruit juice designed to keep the drink from watering down. The obligatory martini — this is still a steakhouse, after all — comes with a mini Mason jar cradling a pickled onion, a Cerignola olive and a twist of lemon zest to garnish your drink as you see fit. As you imbibe, a roving cheesemonger might make his way over to your table offering to slice off chunks of Shropshire
Blue from his wellstocked cart. Or opt for house-cured charcuterie, a seafood plateau or even caviar service.
For the main course With porterhouses, tenderloins, flatirons and ribeyes on the menu, it’s Urban Farmer’s transparent approach to sourcing that sets it apart. Each cut is annotated not only by number of ounces in a portion, but also by the farm name, state of origin and a note indicating
whether this particular animal was raised on a corn or grain diet. Those in search of the best of both (or really, all three) worlds can opt for a New York steak tasting that sits grass fed, prime and dry aged beef side by side for comparison. A la carte sides like locally foraged mushrooms, stellar creamed spinach, and grits topped with a poached egg and parmesan from nearby Castle Valley are served as sharable portion in steaming Staub cast-irons.
After the meal The desserts are serious after-dinner contenders, but if you’d prefer to end your meal with something sippable, Urban
Farmer has all of the bases covered with pages of scotches, cognacs and armagnacs, as well as trio of stomach-settling amaros to round out the evening.

Alessia Cara is not your ‘antisocial pessimist’ She’s actually quite the opposite. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
Alessia Cara’s anti-party party anthem, “Here,” was inarguably the most ironically cool tune of the summer — landing her in the top 25 of Rolling Stone’s best songs of 2015, coming in as runner-up in the BBC’s “Sound Of” competition and dueting with Taylor Swift on the 1989 tour stop in Tampa. Plus, Drake’s a fan. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter (born Alessia Caracciolo) was discovered via YouTube, where she uploaded raspy, soulful covers from her Toronto bedroom before she was swept

Alessia Cara’s “Know-It-All” tour brings her to Philly on Jan. 23. MEREDITH TRUAX
into a series of successes leading to her November full-length release of “Know-It-All” from Def Jam Records. Cara is now set to headline her first-ever North American tour through April . We caught up with Cara from her hometown before her tour kicked off. You’re rumored to have started using YouTube to overcome your shyness, and now you’re performing in front of a crowd almost every night. What has that been like? Doing YouTube really helped because I was always in this weird phase where I wanted to do music, but I was always too scared. It helped me get through that because I was still singing for people and they were hearing me sing, but I didn’t have to be in front of them yet. It helped me break down that barrier I was hiding behind. Do you ever get stage fright? I think it’s nerves than fear. Before I was scared to [perform], but now I’m not so much scared as much as I am nervous. Do you ever watch your old YouTube videos? I’ll go back and watch them sometimes, but not for too long. It’s just kind of awkward and weird. But I don’t ever get tempted to take them down,
because they’re there for a reason and they show the progression [of my work]. I like having them in my archives.
one comes along and ruins that in a way. Even though they’re nice and awesome, that still kind of sucks.
Do you feel like you have to fulfill this role as of “loner” or “antisocial” because of “Here”? I never really claimed to be that, you know? I think people assume that’s what I am because I say “antisocial pessimist” one time. But I guess a lot of those people don’t really pay attention to the lyrics and aren’t really hearing what I’m trying to say. I don’t think I was ever that, and I don’t think I ever have to be that because that’s not what I am.
What’s the best industry advice you’ve received? The best advice has probably been from my parents. They always tell me to take things a day at a time instead of thinking so far ahead. Having that day-by-day reminder has been really good.
I heard the host of the party from “Here” knows the song is about him. Yeah, he’s one of my friends, actually. He knows it’s about him and I don’t think he cares. We all think it’s kind of funny. “I’m Yours” is sort of an anti-love love song. What made you to take that route? I think whenever you hear of someone falling in love, it’s like, “Oh, I’m so happy to be falling in love!” But I think a lot of the time, for me anyway, you don’t want that. You get to that place where you’re happy being by yourself, and some-
You’re at the point where a lot of your friends must be off at college. Is it weird for you being in different life places? We’re all doing our own things and it may seem like mine is more exciting, but it’s only exciting for me because it’s my dream. My best friend is studying psychology and the other is studying teaching, but I feel like if they were doing [what I’m doing], it wouldn’t be fun for them because they’re not into music. What do you wish people knew about YouTube fame? A lot of people think it just happens overnight. For me, I was posting videos for three years before anyone even noticed and my videos still never went viral. I think people assume it happens quickly, but it takes time and you have to work for it. It doesn’t just appear out of nowhere.

New skills you can learn while traveling
If your 2016 resolutions included picking up a new skill, these hotels and destinations can help make the most of your vacation — and send you home with a brand new talent.
1
Taking better photos
As Instagram addicts know, pictures today are worth more than a thousand words — they often take the place of words altogether. To help improve your shooting skills, hotels around the world offer expert-led photography experiences. The just-opened
Hotel Taconic in Vermont has partnered with awardwinning local shutterbug Lee Jorgensen to lead excursions to Equinox Mountain, where he will offer instruction on getting the perfect shots — on both DLSRs and iPhones — in one of the state’s most beautiful locations (starting at $90 an hour). Following a popular photo trip to Antarctica last year, Exclusive Resorts has once again engaged National Geographic photographer Ralph Hopkins to lead a photo-focused trip — this time to the Galapagos, where he will teach you
how to capture the islands’ unique flora and wildlife (Sept. 17–26). Meanwhile, on Sicily’s Bay of Mazzaro, just below the postcard-perfect town of Taormina, guests of Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea can book a Food Photo experience that is part market visit and cooking class, part lesson on how to best plate, style and photograph food — useful skills, considering social media’s obsession with what everyone is eating (prices vary).
2
Gardening Want to cultivate
your green thumb? Whether you live in an apartment or on acres of land, it’s possible to grow things to use in your kitchen — you just have to know how to work the soil you have. Located in the heart of Tuscany, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco’s two-hour vegetable gardening class — operated out of its La Canonica Cooking School and limited to six participants — is led by the on-staff ortolano, or market gardener, who will reveal how best to sow seeds, how and when to water and how to work seasonally. On the Caribbean island of Anguilla, CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa features an onsite hydroponic farm growing everything from kale, tomatoes and eggplant to herbs like parsley, mint, lavender and chervil. Dr. Howard Resh, who oversees the farm production, can teach guests the basics of hydroponic farming and gardening, including tips on the best conditions to grow certain types of produce. If your gardening skills get so strong that you end the season with extra bounty, a hotel can help with that too: Omni Bedford Springs, in Bedford, Pennsylvania, has a canning class that lets

guests pick veggies from the onsite garden, then teaches them how to can and preserve products for use throughout the year.

Meditation
Disconnected, centered, focused, zoned-out — whatever you call it, sometimes it’s important just to be quiet. Learn the basics of meditation with a guided lesson at Napa Valley’s Solage Calistoga, during which the instructor might incorporate fresh herbs (to engage the senses of touch and smell) and Tibetan singing bowls to encourage relaxation. Reconnecting with nature can also help quiet the mind, reengage the inner self and even improve health. Near Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Sandos Caracol Eco Resort’s Path of the Senses experience includes a barefoot and blindfolded guided jungle walk to encourage introspection and positive thoughts, while Forest Bathing — offered at hotels like L’Auberge de
Take the farm-to-table trend home with you.
Sedona in Arizona and The Mayflower Grace in Connecticut — takes you to the forest for a series of contemplative activities, from journaling to targeted meditation.

Healthy cooking
Eating better is a perennial New Year’s resolution, and in 2016, these spots can help take it from to-do list to reality. At the Cayman Islands’ Le Soleil d’Or, a unique farm-to-table wellness resort, guests can get tips on how to best select produce during a tour of the 20-acre organic garden, then work side-by-side with the chef to learn how to prepare fresh and healthful dishes. In California, The Ranch at Live Oak bootcamp offers an offshoot Culinary Experience led by chef Nina Curtis that focuses just on healthful eating. Available in three- or five-day courses, the hands-on workshop covers topics like soups and stocks, sauces and dry-heat cooking, as well as proper knife skills, kitchen organization and garden cultivation. Accommodations are not included, although the ranch can recommend area hotels. SANDRA RAMANI

Do transforming Eagles expect to make the playoffs next season? Doug Pederson thinks he can get the most out of an already talented roster and make the postseason. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The Eagles went 7-9 in 2015 and missed the playoffs. They jettisoned their head coach, Chip Kelly. and brought in Doug Pederson and what appears to be a mostly new coaching staff. The team is in a period of change yet again. So that means they are rebuilding, right?
“There are some pieces to work on and we have to try and get back,” Pederson told the media Tuesday. “In free agency you know you will lose some and gain some. I think the nucleus of this football team is very good and structured very well. There is some talent here. I think you can out yourself in position not only to win the East but to go deep in the postseason.” A bold goal for a firsttime head coach, but not an unreasonable one. With the exception of the current season and of 2012, every one of the past 10 seasons saw a rookie (first-time) head coach lead a team to the playoffs, includ-
ing Chip Kelly with the Birds in 2013. Pederson is not short on postseason experience. Though he did not play, he won a Super Bowl as a backup quarterback as a member of the Packers. He also has been an assistant for Andy Reid for the past seven seasons, a coach who is no stranger to the playoffs. “Andy Reid is a mentor,” Pederson said. “But this is not an Andy Reid football team and it isn’t a Doug Pederson football team, it’s a Philadelphia football team. I am going to put my spin on it and bring my personality on it and we are going to make it our team.”

Flyers hope to prevent slump Was Tuesday’s flop against the Maple Leafs a fluke for the Flyers? EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The Flyers have been playing spectacular hockey of late, with the third-best record in the NHL lifting the squad back into playoff contention. But they suffered their first regulation setback in quite some time back on Tuesday against the Maple Leafs (a team beneath them in the standings). More troubling than the loss is their play on the ice, play that saw the Flyers failing to win a majority of 50-50 pucks and a bevy of costly giveaways both in and out of the defensive zone. “We’re going to have games like that, Flyers captain Claude Giroux said, sounding like a true locker room leader after the 3-2 loss. “Eighty-two games are a lot of games, but we’re going to have games like this. We just can’t have too many. We’re going to have games that we aren’t going to play well or we aren’t going to be playing the right way. But the last seven games, we have been playing some good hockey.

the confidence in this locker room that if we’re down a goal we can come back and give ourselves a chance to win the game. “Yeah things are going, we’re getting points in the last five games, Shayne Gostisbehere said, “so I mean we got a little complacent there at the end and we can’t think like that if we want to be a playoff team.
Flyers seek ninth straight win vs. Penguins In a few months from now, the Flyers and Penguins could be battling each other for the Eastern Conference’s ďŹ nal playo spot. For now, a few games out of playo positioning and behind Pittsburgh in the standings, the Flyers are looking forward to facing their in-state rivals Thursday (at 7 p.m. on CSN) in the ďŹ rst of four meetings this season. Can they shake o a dreary 12-giveaway performance in their recent regulation loss to the lowly Maple Leafs? “I hope so,â€? Matt Read, who notched a goal Tuesday night in a 3-2 loss, said. “Obviously we didn’t play the way we wanted to play tonight and we have to put this one behind us, learn from it, watch video, and ďŹ nd the things we did wrong out there and ďŹ gure it out quickly. If we play like that it’s going to be a rough next couple of games for us.â€? There does not seem to be a sense of urgency for Philly, however, which faces ďŹ ve opponents in a row from the East who are positioned ahead in the win column. “I haven’t woken up one day thinking about who’s ahead of us or behind us in the standings I’m worried about the two points that are at hand,â€? Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. The Flyers hold a 150-9390 record. vs. Pittsburgh.
