GRADING THE Boston spared BLIZZARD FORECAST the worst of storm Bolaris’ Weather Watch
JOHN BOLARIS @weathersavior
The well-advertised storm actually turned out to be more than advertised! These intense storms always seem to ultimately create their own identity and defy computer models in one way or another, but as forecasters, we should realize computer models are guidance and never should be used as the sole bible. The models were very consistent in planting the bull’s-eye of extreme snow across the northern Mid-Atlantic states, in particular the D.C.-Baltimore region. The Philadelphia area was fairly consistent as well with at least a foot of snow event. The computers handled terribly the extent and fierceness of just how far the extreme snow would penetrate. A sharp cutoff of snow to the north and west of the storm was strongly indicated by all of the most reliable of computer models, with the northern edge
Eight inches of snow fell in the city.
Boston As you know, you just missed the blizzard, although the Vineyard and Nantucket got slammed with blizzard conditions along with a foot of snow and, of course, plenty of tidal flooding. Boston officially picked up 8.2 inches of snow. Looking at a quiet week, a storm to form off the
Southeast coast should remain well off the coast, but we will keep an eye on it. The other is a clipper that could brush us with flurries or a little light snow on Friday. It was indeed a tough forecast as the 8.2 inches you received was well above the predicted amounts.
of the heavy snow line just brushing New York City and anything north and west would see nothing more than light accumulations. That, my friends, was a complete bust, as the raging blizzard plowed (pun intended) well into Pennsylvania, New York and southern New England. Even Boston was clipped with 8.2 inches of snow. This caught all your local meteorologists by surprise as we all scrambled to ramp up snow amounts in areas where blizzard warnings were not posted. The storm was piling up at the rate of 1 to 3 inches an hour without prior warnings, and that is maddening to us and to you. Forecasting is a science, but one that will lead to blown forecasts
from time to time even with the most highly advanced computer models as our biggest forecasting tool. As far as any storms ahead, we are watching a storm that will take shape off the southeast coast on Thursday and as it stands now it should move well off the East Coast. The next storm time frame would be Feb. 2-8 as the arctic oscillation should go negative (raising the potential for cold air) at the same time the North Atlantic oscillation goes a tad toward negative (negative phases in AO and NAO increase storm and snow chances). However, this phase will not nearly be as super negative than what we just experienced with this past storm.

The storm that pummeled the East Coast this weekend, leaving New York City with nearrecord snowfall and crippling swaths of the MidAtlantic region, largely passed by Boston. About 8 inches of wind-whipped snow fell on the city late afternoon Saturday through Sunday morning. Bostonians woke up to a mild, bluesky sunny morning and compacted, snowballready snow on Sunday.
Areas south of the city were hit harder, with 10 to 15 inches falling on the South Coast, on the Cape and on the islands, according National Weather Service meteorologist Kim Buttrick. There were hurricaneforce winds clocked on Nantucket and Block Island, Buttrick said, and there were power outages reported throughout southeastern New England. In some areas, weather met the criteria for blizzard conditions, the Weather Service reported. Boston’s conditions were less intense, and by late morning Sunday, plenty were out enjoying the weather on the Common.
Nestor Rueda, new to Boston from Brazil, brought his family to the park to sled down a slight incline. “It’s really nice. Not too cold. It’s a sunny day,” Rueda said. Jared Platt and Lauren Pugh, visiting for the weekend from Camden, New York, spent the morning skating at Frog Pond. Platt, hitting the ice for the first time, gripped the sides of the rink to stay upright, but said he was enjoying himself in the mild latemorning weather. “It’s pretty sporty out here,” Platt said, five minutes into his on-ice excursion. “It’s not helping me too much.”

A crowd of around 100 volunteer techies and developers from Boston and beyond spent the weekend typing away at District Hall in the Seaport, sorting data and building tools for police and community members. Their goal, organizers said, was to use technology to fight back against a human trafficking industry that has moved from street corners to the shadowy and hard-totrack world of message boards and the online black market. “We can’t begin to keep up with it. Why? Because so much of it is all on the Internet,” Attorney General Maura Healey said in a speech to the crowd there for the Thomson Reuters’ Data Innovation Lab-sponsored hackathon on Sunday. The two-day event split programmers into several groups, each charged with coming up with tools cities might use to identify human trafficking hotspots or track buyers who might otherwise avoid law enforcement. “We need digital tools to detect it, prevent it and bring predators to justice,” Mayor Marty Walsh said in a speech. “That’s where everyone in this room comes in.” In the past, the city has
“We need digital tools to detect it, prevent it and bring predators to justice. That’s where everyone in this room comes in.” Walsh
also hosted hackathons — collaborative bursts of coding, usually under one roof and over a limited number of hours or days — on topics like parking and permitting. In one room on Sunday, Ninit Sawhney and a team of a half-dozen or so hackers around a cluster of laptops were creating a platform to sort through arrest data and collect anonymous tips about suspicious activity. The program-in-process could help police make decisions about the streets, parking garages, hotels or other areas in need of more surveillance, said Sawhney, who during the workweek is co-founder and CEO of online voting company called Voatz. “Some of that data is already out there,” said Ari Tal, another member of Sawhney’s hackathon team and a data scientist at FIS Global in Burlington, Massachusetts. “We’re just creating new ways to create that data.” In another corner, a group of two was drawing up plans for a program that could let companies know how many
of their computers are being used to access sites for soliciting sex. “Our tech will pinpoint … where this is occurring,” said Carl Bryant, a Texas-based Thomson Reuters employee. That data could inspire businesses to train employees on sex trafficking, or get them to find and hold accountable employees who pay for sex, said Catherine Manney, of Seattle-based Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking, who was working with the duo of hackers. Overall, the hackathon’s focus was on demand — the customers of the sex trade, rather than on the prostitutes and other victims of it. In that way, it’s part of an important shift, said Cici Gordon of the locally based group Demand Abolition. “We’re really hyperfocused on understanding the role that the buyers play in perpetuating the harm,” Gordon, who was there for the event, told Metro. “The fact of the matter is if you get rid of the demand, there won’t need to be any supply.”

Pop duo Ian Axel and Chad King of A Great Big World took home a Grammy last year for their breakout single “Say Something with Christina Aguilera. This year, they’re headlining a tour — titled “Kaleidoscope, after a track from their November sophomore release on Epic Records, “When the Morning Comes — and will the New York University alumni will be in town March 3. What made you name the tour after the song “Kaleidoscope? Chad King: A lot of people know “Say Something, and it’s a dark, emotional song, but the rest of our music is light and colorful and positive and has youthful energy. The feeling the world “Kaleidoscope gives you is what we want people to feel when they’re at our shows. Which cities are you most excited to hit up? Ian Axel: I’m excited about Salt Lake City. IA: We have to make up a new one. We used to put up our hands together and sing like a barbershop quartet. What do you need to have on your tour bus? Tour buses are usually nice, but it’s a lot easier to sleep on your own [sheets] in a new city than to sleep on a sheet that who knows when it’s been washed. So are you guys still in touch with Christina Aguilera? IA: Yeah, we talk to probably and see her every few months. We were talking about working with her again, and hopefully that’ll happen. I don’t know how we would have done it without [Kickstarter]. We needed money for the EP and we had money for the rent, but we needed to make the album. Chad and I both quit our day jobs and we raised enough money to record six songs and that’s what got us signed to Epic. And now you’re making a musical. IA: We’re planning a show soon [in which] we’re playing the music of this show. It’s going to be like a Great Big World show with special guests. We’re over three years into [the musical], and the goal is to be shopping it around this summer. It’s making progress, but “Hamilton was six years in the making and Sting’s musical took eight years. Why superbosses cultivate superstar talent

HOW TO GET AHEAD Working for a superboss might be just the thing to help your career take flight. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa
alizah.salario@metro.us
Achieving boss status is no small feat, in work or in life. But if you have vision, swagger and insight in spades, then you may be a next-level boss — a superboss, suggests a recent article in the Harvard Business Review. According to the HBR, superbosses are great leaders and innovative thinkers, but they also possess a superpower that puts them a notch above others: the ability to identify and groom talent. Superbosses excel at finding people to carry on their vision and legacy — think of creative superbosses like George Lucas or Lorne
Michaels. You’re more likely to work for a superboss than you are to be one. So here are six tips for getting noticed by a superboss — and becoming a superstar yourself.
Seize elevator moments To stand out to a superboss, you want to capitalize on opportunities to “share ideas, resources, information and make connections, says Pamela Slim, the author of “Escape From Cubicle Nation and the CEO of Ganas Consulting. That requires going beyond your job description, and becoming familiar with what problems your boss and company are eager to solve, says Slim. Be direct and seize the moment — like when you run into your boss in the elevator, says Slim.

Remember, it’s not about you
how you let people know that you’re interested.
Superbosses tend to be very confident and competitive, so approaching one may be intimidating. But instead of thinking about what your boss will think of you, shift focus to the big picture, suggests Slim. “By taking initiative, you’re aware of your boss’ most pressing needs and priorities. I think the frame is important. It’s not just about impressing somebody, and it’s not about you. Showing that you’re smart and strategic is
Be a good mentee If a superboss takes you under his or her wing, make sure the relationship goes both ways. “When they [a superboss] give you advice, make note of it, and send a thank you card. But then more importantly, come back six months later, and say, ‘I wanted to let you know here’s what I did, and here are the results.’ The fact you listened to their advice will give them the satisfaction
of making an impact, says Slim. Didn’t get the desired results? Reach out anyway. Superbosses know failure is part of the process.
Set boundaries Superbosses love the grind. They have fastpaced careers — and they expect you to fall in line. “When you sign up for something knowing what it takes, you need to deliver, says Slim. But that doesn’t mean you have no limits. If you’re not setting boundaries, “that’s not demonstrating leader-
ship, says Slim. Saying no can be uncomfortable, but working with a boss who takes advantage isn’t worth burnout.
Consider yourself a “less experienced equal Remember, a superboss isn’t superhuman. You may be less experienced, but don’t demean yourself because you’ve been on Earth fewer years, says Slim. “That’s not standing in your power or and your authority, adds the expert.

Under pressure: The “always on” work culture causes many employees undue stress. ISTOCK
Work email is wearing you down In our “always-on” culture, the pressure to be available 24/7 is stressing out employees, a study finds. DMITRY BELYAEV @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Modern technology has shackled us to our work, and it’s taking its toll on our health. The culture of being at the office’s every beck and call is causing high levels of stress for employees, particularly those who use their smartphone’s push notification function, which alerts users to every new email. “Those who told us they check their email very early in the morning or very late at night reported feeling very high levels of pressure,” says lead author Dr. Richard MacKinnon.
The research, conducted by the Londonbased nonprofit organization Future Work Centre, found there are strong statistical relationships between how people use email and work-related stress. According to scientists, many people have developed bad email-management habits. Nearly half of the participants used push notifications; 62 percent leave their inbox open all day; and 16 percent of singles check their email between midnight and 3 a.m. “There is a great deal of evidence that demonstrates how ongoing stress impacts our psychological and physical health,” MacKinnon says. “Everything from sleep disturbance to relationship problems — it’s a major cost to society and organizations. We’re
not saying that email will automatically negatively impact employees’ health but we do caution that inappropriate use of email could contribute to pressure, which, in turn, can lead to poor health.” Researchers recommend people not keep their email open all day, and take regular breaks from it. They say it could be beneficial to check your messages only when you really want to, rather than responding immediately. “In fact, it could be better to turn off these notifications completely,” MacKinnon concludes. “Rather than being helpful, it could simply be a bad habit people have developed over time. And like all bad habits, it could be changed for the better.” Scientists plan to take the research forward by
examining how email and other communications technology is helping employees with flexible working arrangements and examine the potential downside of an “alwayson” work culture.

Patriots epic comeback falls short in AFC title game loss The Broncos are headed to their second Super Bowl in three seasons. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The 2016 AFC Championship game was dubbed ‘Brady vs. Manning,’ but it was really a showcase of two stellar defenses. So in a game with a bevy of storylines (Tom Brady’s Deflategate revenge, Peyton Manning’s swan song among others), the Broncos played tough, smart and adaptive football to thwart the slight underdog Patriots 20-18 Sunday afternoon. Brady and New England had one last chance, just inside two minutes and needing a touchdown and twopoint conversion to force overtime. And like he has time and time again, the quarterback found Rob Gronkowski for a huge 40-yard fourth-down connection to set New England up with a first and goal at the 10 with a minute to go. After three failures to get into the end zone, Brady found Gronk to cut things to 20-18 in the back of the end zone. Their entire season came down to the two-point conversion, which was picked off by Bradley Roby. And that was it. The Broncos will advance to the Super Bowl where they will face the NFC champion in two weeks. While Pats fans lick their wounds and think about what might have been, football fans have these three observations to ponder while we await one final NFL game before the 2016 season becomes a memory. Three Things We Learned:
bag for 1 Mixed the Patriots
With six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, down by eight, the Pats and coach Bill Belichick faced a key fourth and 1

deep in Denver territory. And did what Belichick does — he went for it. But the Broncos defense was ready for a quick pass to Julian Edelman, and stopped the receiver short of the marker. The Pats “D” forced a three and out and had another chance, once again facing a fourth down in the red zone. On fourth and 6, a hurried Brady threw the football out of the back of the end zone, once again giving Denver a chance to ice the game. Belichick may have made the best play of the first half himself, successfully challenging a backward pass to give New England possession close to the red zone, setting up a swift and efficient two-play scoring drive capped off with Stephen Jackson’s 1-yard touchdown run. However, a sliced Stephen Gostkowski extra point kept Denver in the lead
(it was the first missed XP of the kicker’s career and wound up costing New England a trip to overtime). Gostkowski did convert a field goal in the second quarter, capping a 14-play drive for the Patriots that was kept alive by a clutch Brady thirddown scramble. Another three points came on the Pats’ first possession in the third quarter, cutting the Broncos lead to 17-12.
2 Relentless Denver ‘D’
Brady (27 of 56, 310 yards, one touchdown) held the ball too long. He was picked off twice. Check for the Broncos secondary. He was also hurried constantly, and sacked four times. Check for the Broncos pass rush. The Patriots typically potent offensive attack was held in check by the Denver defense. In the second quarter,
Battle of the best ever? Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have now faced off five times in the postseason. Here are the results: 2004: Patriots beat Colts, 24-14, in AFC Championship game (Pats would go on to beat Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.) 2005: Patriots beat Colts, 203, in AFC Divisional round (Pats would go on to beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX.) 2007: Colts beat Patriots, 38-34, in AFC Championship game (Colts would go on to beat the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.) 2014: Broncos beat Patriots, 26-16, in AFC Championship game (Broncos would go on to lose Super Bowl XLVIII). 2016: Broncos beat Patriots, 20-18, in AFC Championship game. *Overall, Brady leads headto-head series 11-6.
Von Miller fooled Brady making a big interception. Manning found Daniels for a second time on a stop and go in the right-corner of the end zone, putting Denver up 14-6. A ferocious hit on Brady during a latesecond-quarter reception led to his second big mistake, Denver’s second pick, this one by Darian Stewart. Though the turnover did not directly yield points, the Broncos were able to salvage enough field position to add a field goal (a 52-yarder off the foot of McManus) to put the Broncos up, 17-9, after 30 minutes. Miller was the first player to sack and intercept Brady in a postseason game.
3 Broncos move the ball
After getting off the field on defense to start things
off, the Broncos picked up several first downs on their opening drive, leading to a 21-yard Manningto-Owen Daniels strike to put Denver up 7-0 early. Manning took advantage of a seemingly disoriented New England defense on the play, resembling the Hall-of-Fame quarterback and instead of an aging superstar nearing retirement. In addition to a revitalized Manning (who threw for 176 yards on 17 of 32, with two touchdowns), the Broncos got a lift from their running game early in the fourth quarter after it lie dormant for most of the game when C.J. Anderson broke loose for a 30-yard gain on a third and one. Though Manning wasn’t able to hook up with Jordan Norwood in the end zone for six, Brandon McManus added three to give Denver a big eight-point edge.

The Patriots tried their best, but were unable to make the running game a relevant factor. Tom Brady felt the heat from Denver’s relentless pass rush all game long. The Patriots are no strangers to the spotlight — they’ve competed in each of the last five AFC Championship games.
Peyton Manning resembled his old, Hall of Fame self — even running for a first down for the first time since 2012. The Patriots were a two-point conversion away from reaching their season long goal — to redeem Deflategate criticism.
