With snow cleanup in progress, city tallies the numbers Mayor Jim Kenney asked residents to be patient, calling the blizzard the fourthgreatest snowfall in city history. JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

As the city continues to clean up after Winter Storm Jonas, Mayor Jim Kenney asked Philadelphians to be patient, and called the blizzard the

fourth-greatest snowfall in city history. “We do appreciate your patience, he told a gaggle of reporters during a post-storm update Monday afternoon at City Hall. “We’re getting to your streets. We have to take care of the big ones first that affect the most people — but we haven’t forgotten you. We are coming or we are already there, he said. Police and fire departments fielded more than 23,000 calls from the public; fire and EMS had upward of 34 percent more calls than their daily average; 102 homeless people were provided with supportive services through outreach workers; and more than 2,000 homeless people were in the city’s shelter system. “This blizzard created the fourth-greatest snow accumulation in the city’s history, and required the activation of the city’s emergency

Director Clarena Tolson said that from the start of the storm, city workers had plowed nearly 1,800 miles of city streets and used more than 10,000 tons of salt. There are currently 390 plows in operation.

“This is full force,” she said. As usual during snowstorms, the Philadelphia Park Authority asked that people not park too closely to corners, as snow plows and salting equipment need extra

room to maneuver. Tolson said she expects all streets — both main and side streets — to be cleared by the end of day Wednesday. Both public and Catholic schools in Philadelphia will be closed Tuesday.

The Coast Guard, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and environmental workers were on the Schuylkill River Monday trying to sop up home heating oil that recently spilled into the river as the odor of oil filled the air. The spill does not pose a risk to the public, officials said, because the oil was spilled downstream from the Water Department’s river intakes. Intakes did not need to be closed. Meanwhile, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said all the fuel was contained in snow on the banks and ice on the river, and none got into open water. “Most of the fuel oil appears to have been trapped by the heavy snow, which continues to make site access difficult,” the DEP said in a statement. “Reports indicate that approximately 200 gallons of red dye fuel contained in the ice on the river can be seen from Market Street to Locust Street. At this time, there is no oil sheen in open water.” The leak was first reported to the city on Saturday night, according to the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD). “PWD visited the site and investigated the report that night with a follow-up visit Sunday and today. Our investigation indicates that the river discoloration was due to a leak from a fuel oil tank from a nearby location,” On Reddit, a user posted a picture Sunday showing a reddish leak in the water, which has a similar appearance to what has now been identified as oil. The Water Department said the spill was downstream from water intakes, and there was no risk to drinking water. Approximately 4,200 gallons of oil leaked, with 250 gallons ending up in the river and 3,950 gallons on land. The source was an emergency generator in the apartment building at 2400 Market Street, which is owned by Century Link. “It was a residential condo apartment

building. It fuels the generator, and there is product in the water,” said Samantha Phillips, executive director of the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management (OEM). “Our hazmat task force is out there monitoring and taking readings and water samples.” Clean-up is tricky because the river is mostly ice, Phillips said. “It’s not being boomed because you can’t deploy booms on ice,” Phillips said, referring to containment booms — floating underwater barriers that are typically set up around oil spills. Century Link has a contractor supervising cleanup, Phillips said. The Schuylkill River Trail is closed off between Market and Walnut streets. A long CSX train with what appeared to be oil tankers was stopped near the spill site as the tracks had oil on them. “We’re working closely with CSX. Their rail line has spill on it,” Phillips said. “It’s going to affect the trails slightly. There will be a sheen on the trail that will have to be cleaned up as well.” How the oil got into the water was not exactly clear due to heavy snowfall, the DEP said. “According to initial investigations, the spill migrated from the source location onto nearby CSX Rail property, further onto the Schuylkill River Trail and has entered the Schuylkill River,” the DEP said. “At this point, because of the accumulation of snow in the area, the path to the river has not been determined. It has not yet been confirmed if the path is the result of an overflow on land, or through a storm sewer.” Passersby on the Chestnut Street Bridge were shocked Monday afternoon to see the veins of reddish-brown oil in the ice and water on the river. “It’s amazing how society has been advancing, but we haven’t really focused on what used to work with the environment,” observed Dan Katz. “Our infrastructure is the same.” Additional reporting by Jenny DeHuff

Some prisoners could be resentenced or given the chance to apply for parole. GETTY IMAGES

Louisiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania are among the states likely to be most affected. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday expanded its ban on mandatory sentences of life in prison without parole for inmates convicted of murders committed before age 18, saying even those imprisoned years ago should have an opportunity to argue for their release. The court, in a 6-3 ruling, sided with Louisiana inmate Henry Montgomery, who was convicted in the 1963 fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy at age 17 and has spent more than a half century behind bars with an automatic sentence of life without possibility of parole. The court in 2012 had ruled that mandatory life sentences without parole in homicide cases involving juvenile killers violated the U.S. Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The justices, in their ruling on Monday, said that decision must be applied retroactively

“For these people, it will be the first time a judge will be able to take into account the qualities that made them, as children, less culpable than adults who commit the same crimes.” Katherine Mattes, director of the criminal litigation clinic at Tulane University Law School

to inmates convicted before that ruling was issued. That means Montgomery and more than 1,000 people serving similar sentences around the United States could be resentenced or given the chance to apply for parole. It does not, however, guarantee their release. Montgomery, who is black, was convicted of killing a white sheriff’s deputy in East Baton Rouge at a time when racial tensions in the region were boiling over. The ruling, with conservative Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy joining the court’s four liberals, was the court’s latest to protect juvenile offenders from the harshest sentences. In 2005, the Supreme

Court banned capital punishment for those under 18 at the time of their crimes. Monday’s ruling, authored by Kennedy, left open the possibility of juveniles being sentenced to life without parole in certain cases. Kennedy said Montgomery himself showed “his evolution from a troubled, misguided youth to a model member of the prison community.” Kennedy emphasized that “children who commit even heinous crimes are capable of change.” Justice Antonin Scalia dissented, along with fellow conservatives Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Scalia called the ruling “a devious way of eliminating life without parole for juvenile offenders.” REUTERS

N. Carolina motorist suspected in storm shooting faces murder charges The man, Marvin Jacob Lee, remained in jail without bond after a court appearance on Monday, the sheriff said. A North Carolina man accused of fatally shooting a Good Samaritan who had sought to help him when his vehicle got stuck in a snowstorm, was in jail facing a murder charge, a local sheriff told reporters on Monday. At least five people came to the aid of Marvin Jacob Lee, 27, on Friday evening in Catawba County, North Carolina, during the storm that blanketed much of the U.S. East Coast, said Sheriff Coy Reid. The motorist appeared intoxicated, Reid said, so his would-be

BRIEF South Carolina college punishes 14 cadets in white hood incident Fourteen cadets at the Citadel military college in South Carolina have been disciplined after some were photographed wearing white pillowcases that resembled hoods worn by the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan, the school said on Monday. Two photos of the costumed cadets were posted on social media last month, sparking an outcry from civil rights leaders. The college said its investigation found that freshmen cadets who dressed in all white with pillowcases over their heads to perform a “Ghosts of Christmas Pastâ€? skit and sing Christmas carols showed poor judgment but had no ill intent. The freshmen had been directed by upperclassmen to sing the carols while dressed in costume, the school said. One of the upperclassmen posted the photos on social media. “The cadets did not intend to be oensive,â€? said the Citadel’s president, retired Lieutenant General John Rosa. “However, I am disappointed some recognized how it could be construed as such but didn’t stop it.â€? McDonald’s all-day breakfast is a big hit, investors lovin’ it The world’s biggest restaurant chain’s shares rose 3 percent to a recordhigh of $121.90 on Monday. McDonald’s Corp. reported better-than-expected quarterly samerestaurant sales as the launch of all-day breakfasts proved to be a hit with diners in the United States and demand continued to recover in China. McDonald’s introduced all-day breakfasts in October in the United States, allowing customers to tuck into its popular Egg McMuffins and Hash Browns any time of the day. The move was aimed at countering increasing competition from chains such as Wendy’s, Starbucks and Burger

Easterbrook implemented in a turnaround plan last year that involved making the menu simpler, improving service times and raising worker wages. “I am particularly impressed with how quickly things are changing,” Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy said. “Once upon a time, under previous leadership, it seemed like McDonald’s became a less nimble company where it took a really long time to roll out new products and innovations.” Sales at McDonald’s U.S. restaurants open at least 13 months rose 5.7 percent in the quarter ended Dec. 31 - the best quarterly growth in nearly four years. In coastal NJ, a flood of criticism for Gov. Christie follows storm Residents of New Jersey’s southern shorefront towns on Monday cleaned up homes and businesses flooded by a storm surge during the weekend’s massive blizzard and rued what they described as Gov.Chris Christie’s dismissive treatment of the damage. The storm that walloped Washington and New York with about 2 feet of snow hit coastal Cape May County in New Jersey with tides higher than those measured during 2012’s Superstorm Sandy, sending salt water into properties and forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. Jim Hand voiced exasperation as he surveyed the damage at Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor, a bar and liquor store about 35 miles down the coast from Atlantic City. Hand said that the property’s kitchen, electrical wiring

and floors would all need to be replaced. “We’re doing the same thing today we did after Sandy,” said Hand, 61. He was one of a handful of local business owners to criticize comments by Christie, a Republican White House contender who told CNN on Sunday that he had “no concerns” about flooding as a result of the storm. “Keep this in perspective,” Christie told CNN during a one-day return to the state from the campaign trail in New Hampshire. “Cape May County area was the least flooded area during Hurricane Sandy and had almost no damage in that area.” No immediate estimate of the financial toll of the flooding damage was available but reinsurance broker Aon Benfield said that total insured losses along the East Coast will run into the billions

of dollars. Hand had no patience for Christie’s words, saying, “It shows you how out of touch he is with what’s going on in his state.” Christie spokesman Brian Murray said that the governor’s words had been taken out of context. “Cape May County and lower Atlantic County

did not sustain the direct hit from Sandy suffered by more northern parts of the Jersey Shore. But the governor did not say they were not impacted by Sandy,” Murray said. “He only cautioned news reporters to use some context when pointing to Saturday’s flooding in Cape May and saying it’s ‘Worse than Sandy.’” REUTERS

BRIEF North Carolina’s voter ID law goes on trial Minority voters in North Carolina will have a harder time casting a ballot this presidential election year if a judge allows a law requiring photo identification at the polls to take effect, challengers of the law said in federal court on Monday. But a lawyer representing the state said only a small number of people may not have the necessary forms of identification and exceptions will be allowed under an amended version of the measure. “It’s a policy question,” lawyer Thomas Farr said. “The evidence here does not rise anywhere close to showing a discriminatory intent.” The trial in Winston-Salem is one of several closely watched voting rights battles that will play out across the country as Democrats and Republicans fight for the White House in November. Democrats argue voter ID

laws passed by Republican-led state legislatures target voters who typically support the Democratic party. Proponents of the measures say they are intended to prevent voter fraud. The case in North Carolina tests a key piece of broad voting restrictions passed soon after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that states with a history of discrimination no longer needed federal approval for voting law changes affecting minorities. The U.S. Justice Department and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People argue North Carolina’s revised voting protocol disproportionately burdens African-Americans and Hispanics, who are more likely than whites to lack the acceptable forms of identification. The law “threatens to deter, confuse and disenfranchise voters,” said Michael Glick, a lawyer representing the NAACP. “It sets out to solve a problem that never existed.” REUTERS

16 GOSSIP

Gwen Stefani got a horse Gwen Stefani seems serious enough about this whole relationship with Blake Shelton thing, especially if the latest addition to her life is any indication. But should we be worried that the SoCal punk fashionista is going a bit too country? Stefani took to Instagram to show off her new horse. Yes, a horse. Named Halo. She refers to the horse (in hashtag form) as the “best present ever,” though she doesn’t divulge who could have bestowed her with such a lavish gift. We can totally speculate, though, and my speculation is circling a name that rhymes with Shmake Frelton. She also posted a photo of the poor beast all decked out in country finery, with the unfortunate caption,

ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

“Look at my fancy fringe!” No, Ms. Stefani. Just … no. On the bright side, she can’t be slipping too far into the country life if she gave her horse a name that immediately gets a Beyonce song stuck in your head, right?

Andie MacDowell is so out of touch Stars: just like us. Except when using outdated, superposh expressions to complain about travel woes. On a recent flight, Andie MacDowell — she of “Groundhog Day,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and oh so many

L’Oreal ads — experienced some questionable customer service. “I paid for first class and they put me in tourist because of my dog that I prebooked and paid for,” she tweeted. Tourist class! Can you imagine?

Patton Oswalt Hey New Yorkers -- we’re going through a “blizzard” here, too. A blizzard called...self doubt. (Music cue: Mazzy Star’s “Blue Light”)

Carrie Underwood Welp, I guess I’m officially on tour! All packed up & in some hotel somewhere...just livin’ the dream!

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom? Sure! Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom first prompted romance rumors at a couple of Golden Globes afterparties, where they were spotted getting awfully NED EHRBAR flirty with ned.ehrbar@metro.us each other — even in front of photographers. Well, apparently they’re

the word

looking to keep the speculation going, as Perry and Bloom have been spending even more time together. They even took in some theater in Los Angeles — I mean, who does that? — and showed up in a group selfie taken backstage at “The Absolute Brightness,” posing alongside lead

B.o.B believes the world is flat

Kelly Osbourne They always tell me “if your head was not screwed on then you’d forget it!” Packing for #Australia it’s so hot & all I wear is black

Get ready to hear some stupid, everybody, because apparently Flat Earth Truthers are a thing. And by a thing, I mean a thing that makes me want to go back to bed and never get out. Rapper B.o.B has gone on something of a Twitter tear insisting that the world is not round, tweeting photo after photo of “proof,” including his own accounts of being up really, really high and not being able to see the Earth’s curve. What’s most frightening is the amount of “evidence” other people have already made that he posts and links to, because apparently he’s not alone in this. At one point, poor Neil deGrasse Tyson tried to talk some sense into him, but it was a fool’s errand. And honestly, Mr. Tyson, you’re better than that. This does prove one thing, at least: The Internet is, in fact, making us dumber.

actor James Lecesne and two friends. Sounds like a pretty high-brow date. So, where’s John Mayer in all of this, exactly? I can’t remember if he and Perry were on-again or off-again. So tough to keep it straight. I guess they’re off again, which means their 437th breakup must’ve stuck.

18 DATING

Adventure dating takes swiping right to a whole new level “No Baggage author Clara Bensen went on what Salon.com dubbed “the craziest OKCupid date ever and it totally worked out. Here’s how going big on your next date can work for you, too. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Six weeks after meeting on OKCupid, Clara Bensen and Jeff Wilson did something a little crazy: They decided to travel to eight countries in three weeks together — with absolutely no luggage. Bensen boarded the plane with

the clothes she was wearing, a comb, toothbrush, credit card and passport, and that’s it. For 21 days. Bensen, who chronicles their journey in her book “No Baggage, is part of the new adventure dating trend, doing something

daring with someone you just met. In Aziz Ansari’s Netflix series “Masters of None, Ansari’s character, Dev, takes crush Rachel (Noel Wells) to Nashville for their first date. Going on an adventure date isn’t only a good story, it creates a deep bond much faster than you would just going out for dinner and drinks. But there are some things to know before you give it a try. Here, Bensen gives her best tips.

Heading to Europe for the next date? Cheers to that. ISTOCK

Be prepared to get real open, real fast “When you travel with someone, it’s like getting to know them in fast-forward. In the middle of my trip with Jeff, I got my period and since we were traveling light, I only had two tampons with me. Zoey Deutch comes into her own The daughter of two Hollywood players is making her own way in “Dirty Grandpa.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

GETTY IMAGES

The day the Oscar nominations were announced, actress Zoey Deutch was starting rehearsals for the movie “Why Him?” One of her co-stars just happened to be Bryan Cranston, who received his first nomination for his turn in “Trumbo.” “I went to CVS, trying to find a ‘Congratulations for your Oscar!’ balloon,” Deutch remembers. Those are, as you can imagine, sort of hard to find. “I got him a ‘Happy birthday!’ one instead. Maybe his wife and daughter picked up all the ‘Congratulations on your Oscar!’ balloons.” Being around big stars isn’t new for the 21-year-old actress. In addition to films like “Beautiful Creatures,” “Vampire Academy” and the new “Dirty Grandpa,” she’s the daughter of Lea Thompson — she of “Back to

the Future,” “All the Right Moves,” “Red Dawn” and more — and director Howard Deutch. Her dad directed two of the seminal ’80s teen movies, “Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.” Deutch says she didn’t have some extravagant, atypical upbringing. “I had a very normal childhood,” she tells us. “I mean, nobody’s childhood is normal. But normal for me.” She says, when she was growing up, few at school knew she came from such pedigree. Deutch has been lighting out on her own, not explicitly falling back on her parents’ names. In the spring, she’ll be seen as part of the young ensemble cast in Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some,” a spiritual sequel to “Dazed and Confused.” She did, however, recently act in “The Year of Spectacular Men,” directed by her mom, as well as written and co-starring her sister, Madelyn.

Zoey Deutch, left, parties with Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Aubrey Plaza in “Dirty Grandpa.” LIONSGATE

“It was an amazing experience to get to collaborate on something so close to our hearts,” she says. “To get to learn a new element of your relationship was fascinating.” In the meantime, there’s “Dirty Grandpa,” in which she plays the nice girl who’s able to woo Zac Efron’s uptight 20-something — on a road trip to Daytona

Beach with his crazy gramps (Robert De Niro) — away from a life he may not like. She says she largely did it to work with director Dan Mazer, known for his longtime work with Sacha Baron Cohen (and who has many brightly colored sweaters, she likes to point out). “It’s a hilarious, equal opportunity offensive

film,” she explains. “No one is safe.” When asked what kind of movies she’d most like to do, she instantly stumps for a Western. “I grew up with horses, but I’m a terrible horseback rider,” Deutch says. “Maybe I just want to fulfill my lifelong fantasy of being a good horseback rider, because my sister was, and I want to beat her.”

Hey Marseilles got a little help from Kanye’s secret weapon The Seattle chamberpop band is back.

Clogged gutters could be causing more damage to your home than you realize.

RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Seattle-based Hey Marseilles melted hearts in the indie folk scene with their 2010 national release of “To Travel & Trucks, followed by the warmly received “Lines We Trace in 2013. And now they’re back with a self-titled LP set to drop Feb. 5 from Shanachie Records. This time the chamber pop band worked with Anthony Kilhoffer — a Grammywinning hip-hop/R&B producer-engineer whose roster includes Kanye West, John Legend and Kid Cudi — an unlikely but awesome pairing that’s ever-apparent on the new release. We caught up with lead singer Matt Bishop before they hit the road. There are quite a few of you — what’s the plan for not killing each other in the van? Some of us are going to work from the road. He was a friend of a friend that we had met. We thought nothing would come of it, but then he called us and said he’d like to work with us. Victoria’s Secret models might be born beautiful, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have to hone and tone their bodies. Getting the girls runwayready falls to Mary Helen Bowers, the former ballerina who trained Natalie Portman for her role in “Black Swan.” After 10 years at the New York City Ballet, the 35-year-old Bowers now works from a studio in the city, where she puts models like Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge and newbie Gigi Hadid through their plies, with her custom Ballet Beautiful method. WELLBEING

Startling developments in medical technologies are allowing women to prolong fertility and give birth to healthier babies.

What the latest fertility advancements mean for you

EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

emily.laurence@metro.us

Women searching for ways to slow down their ticking biological clocks is nothing new, and Dr. David Agus, author of the book “The Lucky Years: How to Thrive in the Brave New World of Health” has some encouraging news: there are more options to women prolonging fertility than ever.

A new era for fertility “The interesting thing about fertility is that the eggs are there, they just aren’t functioning well as [women] get older,” Agus says. But scientists have more information than ever, which is leading to new ways to get give birth — at any age — to

healthier babies. Agus says what started as research to help women with mitochondria disorder — classically unable to get pregnant — pass on their DNA using a surrogate has expanded to allowing women too old to conceive naturally do the same thing. “It really brings a new era for dealing with

fertility,” he says. New data is also giving doctors the knowledge they need to prevent diseases. “Earlier this year, a group of scientists showed that they can develop a new enzyme by changing one letter of the 3 billion DNA code. It allows you to potentially correct diseases,” he says. “So if you have the mutant

breast cancer gene, we can potentially correct it so your children don’t have that issue.”

Raising big questions Of course this also raises any ethical questions. “How far do we take it? How do we make sure it’s safe? Do we use it to correct some disorders and not others? Can we use it to make people taller, shorter or stronger? We need leadership here and it’s not clear whose job it is to be that leader,” Agus says. He says creating a discourse about fertility and technology is important so we become one step closer to having that leadership. Otherwise, it slows down developments that could potentially stop diseases from being passed on biologically. “We have to create that movement going forward,” Agus says. Then the [advancements in health] is going to grow and keep growing.”

FEELING GOOD ABOUT SCHWARTZ, GHOST The weekend’s stormageddon made me both joyous (winter wonderland) and depressed (oh, I’ve got to shovel all that). So here are some ups and downs to enjoy with a cup of hot cocoa: UP

I’m still uneasy about Doug Pederson, but delighted with the hiring of Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator. Schwartz is a savvy 4-3 architect, under whom linemen like Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham have flourished. And he’s a former head coach who can guide newcomer Pederson through some of the inevitable pitfalls. The Eagles gave up 430 points in 2015 under Chip Kelly and Billy Davis. Watch for that total to drop to 370 next season. DOWN

Glen Macnow is quite pleased with the Birds’ new defensive coordinator. GETTY IMAGES

THE SPORTS PROFESSOR

GLEN MACNOW @RealGlenMacnow

just reminded me how badly Kelly botched up the Eagles roster. Yes, Mathis made a show of bitching about his contract last off-season. But he vowed not to be a distraction once training camp began. Kelly waited until after free agency and the draft, and then banished Mathis when there was no way to find a viable replacement. The Eagles stumbled through the season with backup guards, and their porous offensive line may have been their biggest failure. UP

My favorite young Philadelphia athlete, Shayne Gostisbehere, has eight goals and 19 points in 27 games this season. He’s smart, physically skilled

and instinctive in a way no Flyers defenseman has been since Eric Desjardins. “The Ghost” has already tied the franchise record for goals by a rookie defenseman and leads all NHL defensemen in overtime scoring. It’s tough these days to invest in a player’s jersey, given the volatility of rosters. You should feel safe buying a No. 53 in orangeand-black — unless, of course, the Flyers switch him to a lower number more befitting his skills.

return, the offense has improved by eight points per game, and Nerlens Noel is back to scoring on alley-oops. I remain baffled by Hinkie’s continued employment after his blatant disregard for improving this franchise. UP

Reports say the designated hitter could come to the National League by 2017. I’m delighted. While hidebound purists may enjoy watching Bartolo Colon flail away, I’d argue that the DH adds strategy to the game. Doesn’t using a spot on someone who might be able to hit-and-run, hit for power, steal a base or display other offensive skills give you more options than trotting out a pitcher who’s more likely to foul off two bunt attempts and then strike out? I say embrace the DH. You’re likely to disagree. Just don’t bury me in all this snow.

DOWN

It’s nice to see the Sixers winning a few more games. But isn’t their limited success even more a condemnation of Sam Hinkie’s hair-brained tanking scheme? Only after Jerry Colangelo came as an overseer and coach Brett Brown begged for a point guard did the Sixers acquire Ish Smith — whom Hinkie could have kept for nothing after last season. Ertz says Bradford wants to stay The Eagles inked their star tight end to a five-year extension Monday. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Before the Eagles look to add new pieces, they are taking care of their own. And luckily for Eagles fans, budding superstar tight end Zach Ertz signed a five-year contract extension, keeping him in South Philly until 2021 (if he serves the length of his contract). The deal will reportedly make Ertz the fourthhighest paid tight end in football, with a salary in the range of $8.5 million per season with $20 million guaranteed. “This is the best deal for me at the right time,â€? Ertz, who has amassed over 2,000 yards over the last three seasons, said. â€œI never play for money. I

want to be the best tight end, I want to be in Philly for a long time.â€? Despite battling a groin injury early last season, Ertz still caught 75 passes for 853 yards last year and is undoubtedly going to be a huge part of Doug Pederson’s offense in 2016. Regardless of Pederson, however, Ertz wants to be an Eagle for life. “One of the things when I look over all of the athletes that I idolize, Kobe Bryant and Jason Witten are two of the athletes that I have looked up to since I was a young kid, and those two guys stayed in their cities throughout their entire careers,â€? the 25-year-old said. “That’s the kind of legacy that I want to leave here in Philadelphia. When people think of great tight ends in Philly, I want to be the guy that they think of. I look at [Brian] Dawkins, I look at Donovan [McNabb], I look at [Brian] Westbrook, and these guys have left lasting legacies in this city. Those

are the guys that I want to be mentioned with. So who will Ertz’s quarterback be next season? “I think [Sam Bradford is] excited, Ertz said. “He wants to be in Philadelphia. Whether he’s back

here or not, that’s none of my business, honestly. He’s going to do what’s best for him and the Eagles are going to do what’s best for us. But at the end of the day, I think he does want to be here.

In addition to shoring up Philadelphia’s receiving core, perhaps the reason Ertz went first (extensions are expected for several other players including Lane Johnson this offseason) was to give

Bradford another reason to pick the Eagles. “I’ve played for five quarterbacks now in three years, which seems like a lot, and I want to play with Sam, Ertz said. “Ultimately, that’s not my decision. But I think the chemistry that I developed with Sam and Jordan [Matthews] developed with Sam, some of the other guys developed, I think it goes a long way. “Jordan and I in particular were rewarded with Sam playing quarterback. At the same time, we’re very confident in Doug and Howie and Mr. Lurie to decide who is going to be the best person to play quarterback.

Altherr good bet to start in right The Phillies have a few intriguing options to play in outfield at Citizens Bank Park. ED CONDRAN @MetroPhilly

sports@metro.us

Pete Mackanin couldn’t help but be intrigued by the numbers posted by Aaron Altherr, who was a late 2015 call-up. The athletic Altherr, envision a young, healthy Jayson Werth, had 20 extra-base hits in just 137 at bats after he arrived in midAugust. The long, lanky and

fleet outfielder, who was drafted in the ninth round in 2009 also had a .936 OPS in 103 at-bats against right-handed pitchers. It’s a small sample set but Mackanin like many pundits believes the athletic Altherr can make an impact in the outfield. Mackanin indicated that his starting outfield for the 2016 season could be Peter Bourjos, who is a great fielder with plenty of range, in center. Odubel Herrera, who he dubbed a “perennial .300 hitter,” in left and Altherr in right. Altherr, who turned 25 on Jan. 14, believes he’s ready to take that next step.

“I’ve been working hard in the offseason and I just want to get better,” Altherr said. “I worked hard after the first time I was up here to improve on things.” The biggest difference between Altherr circa 2014 and last season is that he cut down his strikeouts and upped his walk total. “The name of the game is getting on base,” Altherr said. “I want to get on.” But Altherr also has quite a bit of pop, which he displayed last season. “Aaron is a really good ballplayer,” catcher Cameron Rupp said. “I know he wasn’t up long last sea-

son but he showed what he could do when he got here. He flies around the bases and he covers a lot of ground out there in the outfield. I can see why he would start next season.” However, John Mayberry impressed during a late-season run with the Phillies in 2010 but has fizzled since proving that he’s not a starting major league outfielder. “I don’t worry about what anyone else has done or hasn’t done,” Altherr said. “I have a lot of work to do. I have to play to the best of my ability in spring training to try to earn a job with this team. I’m going to do whatever I can to help.”
