The United States cannot solve problems in the Middle East without Iran’s help and should drop its “hostile” stance toward Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said. Rouhani also took a swipe at regional arch rival Saudi Arabia, saying its military campaign in neighboring Yemen was a failure. Rouhani is midway through a four-day trip to Italy and France, looking to burnish his country’s international credentials following the signing last year of a nuclear accord with world powers and the lifting of financial sanctions. PENTAGON CONTRACTS

The Pentagon views public-private partnerships as the best way to end U.S. reliance on Russian rocket engines, and plans to award contracts for such arrangements in fiscal 2017, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said in a letter obtained by Reuters. Work told Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain in the letter dated Jan. 26 it was unrealistic to transition completely away from the Russian RD-180 engines that power the Atlas 5 rocket built by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing, before 2021 or 2022. Brookline police seek one, possibly two, suspects traveling in a white Ford Focus after three men were stabbed and shot in the Boston suburb Wednesday. All three victims — described as men in their 20s — were in stable condition at area hospitals, Brookline Police Chief Daniel O’Leary told reporters. He said the victims were known to police in several communities, but

would not elaborate. Two of the injured were found outside near 75 Harvard Street, he said. A third was found inside an apartment at 198 St. Paul Street, he said. At least two were both shot and stabbed, and the other was at least stabbed, he said. “It is very rare that this happens, but by the same token we’re ready for things like this,” O’Leary said at the press conference. The vehicle was described as a rental with a New York license plate. Witnesses and cameras at nearby intersections helped police identify the car, O’Leary said. He said police do not know the identities of the suspects. Police were investi-

gating whether the two victims on Harvard Street jumped out, or possibly were pushed out, of the vehicle as it sped away from Saint Paul Street, he said. Police were also determining whether another suspect fled on foot, O’Leary said. In response to the violence, several schools took emergency precautions, keeping children at three area schools indoors. Police identified those schools in a tweet as Pierce Elementary School, Amos A. Lawrence School and St. Mary of the Assumption. The department also tweeted that officers would be assigned to each of those schools and that students would be released online.

Bostonians biggest tippers: Zagat A new report has uncovered the tipping habits, restaurant trends and restaurant pet peeves most common to different American cities, and it finds that the dining landscape has plenty of similarities but some remarkable differences. American restaurant culture is evolving differently across the nation’s major cities, according to the findings in a new Zagat report. Some trends indicate

real differences in taste and expectations as diners reveal where they are most similar and most different. When it comes to tipping, Americans leave an average of 18.9 percent gratuity, with Boston leaving the most generous tips at 20 percent, Zagat stated, adding that residents of San Antonio average the lowest tips, at 17.1 percent. Overall restaurant prices vary even more noticeably, with New

York City residents spending an average of $48.44 to eat out, a full $12.14 over the national average of $36.30, Zagat reported. Dinners in Detroit cost the least, with an average price of $28.77. Specific to diners’ pet peeves, 32 percent of New Yorkers dislike noise the most, while 30 percent of Bostonians agree that noise is their biggest complaint when it comes to eating out. BOSTON

A task force formed by Mayor Marty Walsh has come up with recommendations for improving nightlife in Boston. The group of twodozen appointees said some restaurants should be able to serve food and alcohol later, rules on outdoor drinks and live music should be loosened, and the license process should be streamlined, according to an announcement released Wednesday. They aren’t new policies, just suggestions. Walsh said in a statement he would “look forward to further exploring them. “In the city of Boston we have an opportunity to create the kind of nightlife that visitors expect in a world-class city, Walsh said in a statement. Baker plans 3.5% spending increase Gov. Charlie Baker plans to boost state spending next fiscal year by 3.5 percent, making targeted investments while holding the line on many government accounts despite backto-back years of major jobs gains that are pushing up state tax collections by an estimated 4.3 percent. With a strong focus on fiscal restraint, Baker’s budget reflects the ongoing reality that fixed costs required for MassHealth, pensions, debt service and other expenses continue to consume large chunks of new revenue, limiting the areas where policy leaders can spend new dollars without turning to taxes or reserves. The governor’s $39.55 billion spending plan for fiscal 2017, which he intends to file Wednesday, further reduces the volume of one-time revenues in the annual budget to $250 million, down from $1.2 billion in the fiscal 2015 budget that Baker inherited from his predecessor, Gov. Deval Patrick. The Baker administration plans to roll over between $400 million and $500 million in

MassHealth payments, but is not counting those among its onetime revenue sources. And government accounts not targeted for discretionary spending increases or facing rising fixed costs will see an average increase in appropriations of 0.6 percent. The MBTA will see about a $15 million increase in funding from dedicated sales tax revenues, but the administration said it would commit the same amount of discretionary subsidies — about $187 million — to the agency that it did in last year’s budget. The governor’s spending plan would deliver a total of $1.187 billion to the MBTA.

I can’t help taking all of this a little personally, Ben. “I think they all want to be him, they all want to be Justin Bieber. They all want Justin Bieber’s life, let’s face it,” Stiller says during Australian promotions for his new film, in which Bieber makes a cameo. “He’s a great kid and I was very fortunate to have him in the movie.” If you say so. LOLO doesn’t need you to scream her name But she understands why you’d want to. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Before she was LOLO, she was Lauren Pritchard, a name that might sound familiar thanks to her two-year run as Ilse in the Broadway production of “Spring Awakening. While the 28-year-old singer-songwriter is now riding the high from writing music for the wellreceived off-Broadway production “Songbird, she’s not even close to slowing down. As LOLO, she’s on the road as part of the Communion Tour. When did you pick up the name LOLO? Some people still call me Lauren. It ebbs and flows, but it’s been a nickname since I was in high school. Now it’s to the point where my grandmother calls me LOLO, so it combs over all mediums. But is it all caps because it’s meant to be shouted?

It’s more of a personalization thing. I’m really into all-caps texting in general, I think most people do all caps texts because it’s them screaming. But for me it’s more of a silly, fun sort of thing. Do you think your theater background shows up in your performance style? In a logistical sense, endurance-wise, you learn a lot about what your body can do by doing a Broadway show. You have understudies, obviously, but you’re creating these roles and representing yourself on stage, so missing a show is a big deal. You really have to learn what you have to do to take care of yourself. And then that gets heightened on the road when you’re the only person that can do that job. There are no sick days, even if you’re sick as a dog. What’s dierent about writing songs for stage versus writing for an album? As the process gets more

Peek inside the minds of Disney and Dali

The Dali and Disney families around the dinner table in Spain in 1957.

“Architects of the Imagination” at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, uses virtual reality to explore the decadeslong friendship between the two innovative artists. RACHEL VIGODA @rachelvigoda

rachel.vigoda@metro.us

Walt Disney and Salvador Dali never completed their animated short film “Destino,” but the friendship they formed working on it in the 1940s lasted the rest of their lives. That intersection between two of the 20th

century’s most innovative and influential artists is explored in the new “Disney and Dali: Architects of the Imagination” exhibit at the Dali Museum St. Petersburg, on Florida’s tourist-favorite Gulf Coast, co-organized by the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. “We’ve talked about highlighting these two artists for some time to showcase their collaboration on ‘Destino,’ their friendship and their collective pioneering spirit of imagination,” says the Dali Museum’s marketing director, Kathy Greif. “It took the right partners and the right timing, and now we have an incredible show.” The multimedia exhib-

it includes paintings, story sketches, archival film, photographs and clips from the surreal “Destino,” eventually completed by Disney’s nephew in 2003, almost 60 years after it was started. The guided audio tour is narrated by Sigourney Weaver. If that’s not enough of a look inside the minds of these “creatures of creativity,” as Greif calls them, there’s also a virtual reality component to the exhibit. “Dreams of Dali” lets visitors go inside the artist’s 1935 painting “Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s Angelus.” As for what exactly that means, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself. “Until you experience virtual reality, you can’t really even understand it,” Greif says. “[It] may have been around for a number of years, but the technology is so improved. It reminds me of the first time I went snorkeling, and what I can only imagine outer space would be like — it’s a physically different feeling for your body, and in the case of ‘Dreams of Dali,’ also for your soul. It’s breathtaking.” In its permanent collection, the Dali Museum contains more than 2,000 works from Dali, housed in a building that’s partly a glass “bubble” stretching up 75 feet. The “Disney and Dali” exhibit is open through June 12.

Bruins midseason report card The offense has been fine but the B’s are allowing far too many goals. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

sports@metro.us

Heading into the 2016 All-Star break, the Bruins are 26-18-5 overall, which is good enough

for third-place in the Atlantic Division and fifthplace in the Eastern Conference. They have been just awful at TD Garden (11-13-2) but they are unquestionably one of the best road teams in the NHL (15-5-2). The unpredictability of this club is further illustrated by the fact that they own the third-best goal-differential in the East (plus-16).

B

Coaching For someone who came into this campaign with his job in serious jeopardy, head coach Claude Julien has settled in after a bumpy start. Boston should make the postseason this spring but if it fails to do so for the second year in a row, Julien will likely be fired. Having already been let go from two other head coaching

jobs in the NHL (Montreal and New Jersey), he has clearly learned some important lessons about tweaking things in his style before it’s too late. Specifically, in this season with so many young players in and out of the lineup, he has been much more open to changing lines in the middle of a game — something which he used to loathe to do. He is still one of the best in the league behind the bench.

David Krejci, right, and the Bruins forwards get a high mark. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Goaltending It has been an uneven season so far for Tuukka Rask (17-154, 2.49 goals against average, .917 save percentage and four shutouts) in 2015-16. He is still Boston’s most

important player so when he is on his game and they are capable of playing with almost anyone. Julien has done a good job so far in terms of giving Rask some rest, which should come in handy when they really need him down the stretch. Backup Jonas

Gustavsson (9-3-1, 2.38 goals against average, .915 save percentage) has been a very pleasant surprise for the B’s. They have to hope that the undisclosed illness that sent him to Mass General Hospital on Tuesday night is nothing too serious.

Defensemen

VS. MERRIMACK

JANUARY, 29 7:30 TICKETS ON SALE NOW AT Premium Club and Suite Rentals also available!

Thus far, (with apologies to Forrest Gump) you never seem to know what you’ll get out of Boston’s defensemen. Zdeno Chara (7 goals, 20 assists, plus-9) will be 39 in less than two months and the captain has obviously slowed down. The scary part for the B’s is that they are nowhere close to having anyone else that can push him as a top defenseman. Injury-prone Dennis Seidenberg (0 goals, 7 assists, minus-3)

has played in 33 games and Adam McQuaid (1 goal, 5 assists, plus-6) has played in 38 but he is currently on IR with a concussion. Rookie Colin Miller (3 goals, 12 assists, plus-1) has shown promise while Kevan Miller (3 goals, 10 assists, plus-5) has been a turnover machine.

Forwards On paper, this doesn’t appear to be an offensive juggernaut, but at least when you examine the statistics, you realize that the Bruins’ offense has really carried them. The Bruins have scored the second most goals in the East (147) which also ties them with the Blackhawks for third in the league, and they also surprisingly possess the second-best power play in the NHL (25.9 percent). Six different guys have double-digit goal totals, led by All-Star Patrice Bergeron (19 goals, 25 assists, plus10) and Brad Marchand (20 goals, 12 assists), who has played like an All-Star for the most part except for his needless three-game suspension. Free agent-tobe Loui Eriksson (15 goals, 24 assists, plus-11) is setting himself up for a big payday, either here or elsewhere while Ryan Spooner (10 goals, team-best 27 assists) is having a breakout season. David Krejci (11 goals, 25 assists) still feels like the key part of the offense. You can truly see his importance when he’s not in the lineup.

FANTASY: KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE REAL NBA TRADE MARKET ADAM LEVITAN FANTASY SPORTS Adam Levitan is a Fantasy Sports columnist for Metro US. He is also a DraftKings analyst and co-host of The Daily Fantasy Football Edge podcast. @AdamLevitan

There are things the NFL does better than the NBA. The trade deadline is not one of them. There’s sure to be action when the NBA’s Feb. 18 deadline hits, so it’s time to start thinking about potential fantasy ramifications. At last year’s deadline, the Jazz traded Enes Kanter to the Thunder and cleared the path for Rudy Gobert. After the trade Gobert saw a huge minutes bump to 34.1, allowing him to bust out for 10.9 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 1.0 steals. Stashing Gobert prior to the deadline was a key to many fantasy titles. Understanding who is likely to be traded and who could benefit is often a difference-making play.Â

Chief Kieff clear out The Suns are arguably the worst team in the league right now and they’ve gone south on Markieff Morris. It’s possible they’ll take pennies on the dollar for him. That would be great news for Alex Len, who has per-36 minute averages of 12.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks this season. With Tyson Chandler withering down as well, Len projects as the featured player for the Suns.Â

Love to have Love There are rumors swirling around Kevin Love as he becomes a scapegoat for any struggles the Cavs encounter. Moving a player who just signed a $112

million contract is never easy, but GM David Griffin has made some big deals at the deadline before. If Love were to move out of the shadows cast by LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, his usage rate would spike dramatically.

Hibberty hop along Roy Hibbert’s 25.1 minutes per game as the Lakers starting center are a waste. There’s a decent chance they use his expiring contract to pick up some kind of assets as they prepare for the postKobe era. If Hibbert goes, Julius Randle’s minutes should finally be secure on a nightly basis. If that becomes the case, Randle will be a nightly doubledouble.

Two years ago, Kevin Love averaged 26.1 points and 12.5 boards. GETTY IMAGES
