The last two fugitives who broke out of a California jail last week were arrested on a tip from a man who saw their stolen van in the parking lot of a San Francisco Whole Foods supermarket, authorities said. The manhunt came to an end when Hossein Nayeri, 37, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, were apprehended in San Francisco’s park district about 375 miles north of the lockup. REUTERS

A battle involving gunfire and knives erupted at a Denver motorcycle exposition on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead and sending seven people to the hospital, authorities said. There were no immediate arrests in the mayhem, which took place at the Colorado Motorcycle Expo at the National Western Complex, Denver Police Chief Robert White said at a news conference. The event was canceled for Sunday. Police were talking to several witnesses and a “person of interest” about the incident. REUTERS

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has decided not to impose further punishment on David Petraeus, a former U.S. military commander and CIA director who admitted sharing classified information with his mistress, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The short letter was sent by Stephen Hedger, the assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, and the decision is in line with an Army review. REUTERS

Two Virginia Tech engineering students were jailed on charges connected to the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl whose remains were found in North Carolina after a four-day search. David E. BLS ENROLLMENT

Enrollment among black students at Boston Latin School is in the spotlight this week after a campaign to spread awareness of racism at the historic exam school. Fewer than one in 10 students at the school is black, according to an analysis by The Boston Globe — down from 23 percent in the mid-’90s. Hispanic students make up 12 percent of the school’s population. Nearly half of BLS students are white. SPENCER BUELL

The city’s East Boston neighborhood was among sites of police raids that netted dozens of suspected members of the notorious and violent MS-13 gang late last week. In all, 56 alleged members of the El Salvador-based outfit “La Mara Salvatrucha” have been indicted, according to an announcement on Friday. Many are in custody following raids in East Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Lynn, Revere and Somerville, officials said. Fifteen had already been in custody and 18

remained at large on Friday. Thirteen faced immigration charges. The suspects ranged in age from 19 to 44. The early morning arrests — which were carried out by 400 officers with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and state and
local police — followed episodes of violence in Eastie connected to the reputed criminal enterprise, among them the recent East Boston murders of 15-yearold Wilson Martinez, 16-year-old Irvin de Paz and 16-year-old Cristofer Perez de la Cruz.
Law enforcement believe gang violence was to blame two weeks ago when shots rang out at Maverick Station on the Blue Line, also in East Boston. Police continue to pursue the suspect in that case, 21-year-old Eastie resident Rogelio Alvarado.
The raid spread new awareness in the area about the violent tendencies of MS-13 — described by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office as the first and only street gang in the U.S. labeled a “transnational criminal organization” with an East Coast foothold in
the city. The details emerged in testimony on Friday, as law enforcement showcased a table splayed with seized weapons and a poster filled with the faces of the alleged gangsters under the banner: “Operation Mean Streets.” Investigators believe MS-13 recruited new teenage members in area schools, including East Boston High. Gang members encouraged new recruits, some as young as 14, to commit gruesome crimes to gain status — attacking victims with machetes, knives and chains, Ortiz’s office has alleged. Their official motto, translated to English: “kill, rape, control,” Ortiz said. Charges for the suspects include murder, racketeering, conspiracy, firearms violations, immigration offenses and drug trafficking.
MBTA fare hike hearing due Monday The MBTA’s overseers are scheduled to hear from commuters in Boston on Monday for the first hearing in the city on proposed fare hikes. The T’s oversight board is slated to decide in early 2016 whether to raise fares for its services. Its choices at present include bumping up fares systemwide by about 7 or 10 percent on average. In either scenario, fares would go up by different amounts for different modes —
one proposal would see a bump by as much as $9.50, or 12.7 percent for monthly LinkPass holders, for example, while at the same time raising Commuter Rail Zone 1 fares by 50 cents, or 8.7 percent. The hearing comes after one each in Lynn and Brockton, where riders largely opposed bumping up ticket prices. “It’s just another tax on the poor,” Pamela Bush Miles, of the Great-
NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
er Four Corners Action Coalition, told T officials at the Lynn hearing last week at the city’s Breed Middle School, according to the State House News Service. The idea has been met with opposition from transportation-focused groups at T meetings in the past, with many arguing that the agency shouldn’t raise fares amid service issues on aging trains and on the heels of a disastrous winter in 2015 plagued by delays and cancellations. Raising fares could boost revenue by as much as about $50 million for the T. Hikes, which would be the first since 2014, are part of efforts to close a $242 million budget deficit in fiscal year 2017. Monday’s meeting starts at 10 a.m. at the MassDOT headquarters at 10 Park Plaza. SPENCER BUELL

BRIEFS No need to panic over ďŹ rst Massachusetts case of Zika virus: Experts The Boston Public Health Commission conďŹ rmed that a Boston man has been the ďŹ rst reported case of the Zika virus in the commonwealth. Health oďŹƒcials expect the man to survive, according to a
report from CBS. The Zika virus is spread through mosquitos, which means that the New England area will not be aected by the spreading virus because there are no mosquitos around this time of year. The virus is not transmitted from person to person, so contact
with the man will not cause an outbreak. “The species of mosquito that transmits Zika is rarely found in Boston, Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Infectious Disease Bureau at the Public Health Commission told CBS. “However, we encourage those traveling to
countries with a high risk for Zika transmission, especially those who are pregnant or may become pregnant to take the utmost care to avoid contracting the virus. Information on the Zika virus can be found on the CDC website. NATE HOMAN

Lawyers for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev filed an appeal on Friday of his conviction on murder and other charges related to the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, according to court papers, two weeks after a federal judge rejected a request for a new trial. The notice of appeal also asks the court to overturn a sentence of death by lethal injection pronounced on Tsarnaev after his conviction last year for his role in an attack that killed three people and injured more than 260 others. In court papers filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston, lawyers asked for a reversal of an order that Tsarnaev, 22, pay
more than $101 million to victims of the attack at the finish line of the annual 26.2 mile race at Boston’s Copley Square. Tsarnaev’s attorneys did not spell out the grounds on which they were seeking to overturn his conviction and sentence. Prosecutors said Tsarnaev carried out the bombings along with his older brother, Tamerlan, who was later killed in a confrontation with police. In addition, Tsarnaev’s lawyers, Judith Clarke and David Bruck, want a reversal of a judge’s refusal to unseal a list of jurors who convicted the former university student. On Jan. 15, U.S. District Judge George O’Toole rejected the request for a

new trial, saying the court had already resolved some factors that Tsarnaev’s attorneys raised in their request. The lawyers had argued it was impossible to seat an impartial jury in Boston due to the intense publicity surrounding the attack. Tsarnaev is being held at the “Supermax
high-security prison in Florence, Colorado, while his attorneys appeal his death sentence. Legal wrangling over Tsarnaev’s fate could play out for years or even decades. Just three of the 74 people sentenced to death in the United States for federal crimes since 1998 have been executed. REUTERS

Boston’s Laughing Liberally comics weigh in on Iowa Caucus As the action plays out at the Iowa Caucus on Monday, Matthew Filipowicz and his band of left-leaning Bostonian jokesters will be watching, ready to poke fun at an election year milestone, and to skewer opponents on the right. “On the Republican side I think it’s gonna be a bloodbath,” Filipowicz told Metro on Sunday. “The crap is hitting the

fan.” Filipowicz, comedian and talk radio host, runs a progressive comedy show called Laughing Liberally at the Riot Theater in Jamaica Plain. Their goal in 2016: “entertain the troops” and unite in their mission to send a Democrat to the White House, Filipowicz said while on break from canvassing for Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire. “I think the best comedy has a point of view,” he said. Metro asked the Laughing Liberally crew — a mix of Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporters — to sound off on the state of Election 2016 as they see it. Here’s what they said:
Matthew Filipowicz
In past GOP primaries, they’ve weeded out candidates who seem too racist. This year, the base is trying to figure out who’s the MOST racist. Donald Trump has insulted Latinos, Muslims, women. What’s next? Cats? “Kittens are a highly overrated pet with zero cred. Losers.” Ted Cruz would be the first president with the glassy stare of a cult member. Bernie is running against those who think “The Big Short” was a feelgood movie.
Nick Ortolani To be fair, opponents of gun control simply believe buying guns shouldn’t be as difficult as acquiring women’s health care. It’s hard to tell if Ted
Cruz has early-onset Donald Trump, or if Donald Trump has lateonset Ted Cruz.
Pamela Ross Bernie Sanders is one Hawaiian shirt away from becoming a “cool” weekend dad, while Carly Fiorina is the scariest substitute teacher at my Catholic school.
Kenice Mobley Ted Cruz is the guy who was bullied in school, but even the teachers thought he deserved it. This election is the best thing to happen to the news since the Watergate scandal. Late-night talk-show hosts have never had it so easy. This ragtag group of Republicans says more dumb or crazy stuff than any other primary field and I’m

Tawanda Gona Hillary Clinton seems like the type of person that gives out mini toothbrushes on Halloween. Rubio looks like a Lego person on his first job interview. I’m really impressed that Ted Cruz hasn’t used his protective ink sack to get himself out of tricky situations. He’s pretty brave for a sea creature living on land. Bolaris: Polar vortex to kick off on Super Bowl The January blizzard of 2016 is now in our weather rearview mirror, and our atmosphere is what meteorologists call “the relaxed mode.” Temperatures will be heading into the 50s Monday, but sunshine will be limited and we can see a passing shower or two. Tuesday will see sunshine and readings in the mid40s, but Wednesday will be a soaker. By Super Bowl Sunday, a polar vortex will sink southward. Energy diving south and east will instigate storm development. We may be dealing with significant snow, especially across the Cape and parts of Southern New England.

It’s going to be an extra awkward end-run for this year’s awards season now that so much attention has been drawn to the lack of diversity at the Oscars, since every other awards show will inevitably be compared to them — and favorably, at that. Why introverts excel in leadership roles

HOW TO GET AHEAD Think being a leader means being a magnetic force of nature? Think again. Quiet types with a calm, steady demeanor make for effective bosses, too. ALIZAH SALARIO @Alirosa
alizah.salario@metro.us
For the record, introverts don’t walk around with paper bags over their heads. Though commonly characterized as reflective loners who prefer solitude to social settings, intro-
“People think if you’re a talker, then you’re a leader, or a salesperson. But in reality, the introvert/extrovert distinction is far more complicated. Beth Buelow
verts can and do excel in positions that place them in front of the public, says Beth Buelow, author of “The Introvert Entrepreneur: Amplify Your Strengths and Create Success on Your Own Terms. “People think if you’re a talker, then you’re a
leader, or a salesperson, says Buelow. But in reality, the introvert/extrovert distinction is far more complicated. “Shift your mind-set from thinking of introverts and extroverts as personality types to energy types. It’s more about
Here’s how introverts can outshine the extroverts Set yourself up for success Introverts tend to thrive at work under certain circumstances, says Buelow. For introverts, “what’s important is that they have a clear role, a certain degree of autonomy, and that they have room for mastery, so they can get really good at what they’re doing. Capitalize on your strengths Introverts are stellar listeners. Like some of the best leaders and salespeople, says Buelow, they’re able to “put the
spotlight on others, instead of feeling like all the energy has to be directed on themselves.â€? Take an improv class Introverts struggle when they’re forced to act spontaneously or respond under pressure — which is precisely what improv forces us to do. “It’s not about being funny; it’s about thinking on your feet, accepting oers and learning to trust yourself,â€? says Buelow. Those principles will then carry over into work
situations. Own your role Some of the most successful introverts are actors, says Buelow, because “inniesâ€? can fairly easily slip into a role that’s “scripted, controlled and where there are clear expectations, so they don’t have to reveal themselves.â€? For introverts, being hooked into something like a speciďŹ c role or an organization with a clear mission can give that extra boost of conďŹ dence.
where we gain and drain our energy. The differentiation, says Buelow, boils down to the fact introverts “prepare energetically by internally processing, whereas extroverts tend to recharge by socializing and verbally processing. And yet, the image of introverts as wallflowers who shrivel at the thought of collaboration persists, so we don’t often associate them with jobs like teachers, reporters, actors and entrepreneurs. But introverts do succeed in “extroverted jobs, and their strengths may actually give them an edge.

The university fired back, saying the claims were without validity. ISTOCK
Major fail: DeVry University allegedly deceived students Fed lawsuit claims for-profit college isn’t serious about success. The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against DeVry University, run by DeVry Education Group Inc., on Wednesday alleging the company deceived students about the prospect that they would find work. Shares of DeVry were down 17.43 percent at $19.60 following the announcement of the lawsuit around midday Wednesday. The Department of Education, which has been cracking down on for-profit schools, said Wednesday it had ordered DeVry to stop making certain claims about its graduates’ employment. In a letter to DeVry posted on posted on its website, the Education Department said as condition of further U.S. federal student aid to DeVry students, the university must substantiate assertions it makes about its students finding work. DeVry said it would “vigorously contest” the FTC complaint and would request a hearing to discuss the Education Department’s action. “DeVry Group believes that the FTC’s complaint — filed
40 years after DeVry University began publishing accurate graduate employment statistics — is without a valid legal basis,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, the FTC’s complaint contains anecdotal examples that exaggerate the allegations but do not prove them,” the company said. The FTC accused the school of being deceptive in saying that 90 percent of DeVry graduates found work in their field within six months of graduation. The FTC said it found that DeVry would define a students as working in their field when they were, in fact, working as restaurant servers. In another instance, a person who graduated in 2012 with a degree in business administration with a health care management focus was listed as working in his field when in fact he was selling cars. “Educational institutions like DeVry owe prospective students the truth about their graduates’ success finding employment in their field of study and the income they can earn,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. Best NFL players of all time
We rank the best of the best in pro football history. The old guard doesn’t get much love. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
It might just be the greatest sports bar argument of all-time. Who is the greatest football player of all-time? You Ronald “Mac” McDonald non-believers in evolution won’t subscribe to my theory that athletes get better as the generations move on, so this list will sting a little for the nostalgia-obsessed. In addition to the era in which these players played; winning, individual statistics, position (QB is the most important position in all of sports) and the all-important eyeball test also factors into the formula. Let the debate begin.
1Tom Brady, QB
It has never been more difficult to win in the NFL. There are 32 teams in the league. In Joe Montana’s time, there were 28 teams. In Jim Brown’s era, there were just 14 teams. Oh, and now there is full blown free agency. It’s next to impossible to keep a great team intact. Brady has started more Super Bowls than any QB in history and is tied with Montana and Terry Bradshaw for the most titles. Statistics? His 2007 season (4,806 passing yards, 50 TD passes, only eight interceptions) should be regarded as the greatest passing season of all time (Peyton Manning had doubledigit interceptions in each of his best passing seasons).
Montana, 2Joe QB Montana never passed for over 4,000 yards in a season. He also played with another
guy on this extremely elite list (Jerry Rice). Because of stats and because he had much more help, Montana is edged by Brady here. Yes, Joe Cool was a perfect 4-0 in Super Bowls, but Brady has a higher playoff winning percentage (.710 to .696).
3Lawrence Taylor, LB
Comedian Artie Lange sums up LT’s greatness in a joke, saying that in the 1980s everything that late Giants public address announcer Bob Sheppard said ended in “… and Taylor.” LT was so good that he was seemingly in on each and every tackle during Giants games in that era. Taylor won the NFL MVP award in 1986. He is the last defensive player to win the award.
4Jerry Rice, WR
Rice is the NFL’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. In 2010, NFL Network’s “Top 100: NFL’s greatest players” placed Rice at No. 1. But he also had the No. 2 guy on this list throwing to him.
5Jim Brown, RB
Talk to any football fan over the age of 65 and they’ll think you’re nuts if you don’t put Brown at the top of your list. As mentioned before, however, Brown played in an era with just 14 teams in the entire league. He also played just nine seasons.
6John Elway, QB
Elway had phenomenal numbers (300 TDs, 51,475 yards) and got his team to the Big Game five times. But his sub-.500 record in the Super Bowl (2-3), gets him pushed closer to No. 10 than No. 1.
7Peyton Manning, QB
The nine “one and dones” Manning has on his playoff résumé will forever hurt him on these type of lists. If he can capture Super Bowl title No. 2 on Sunday, however, expect him to vault a few spots.
8Joe Greene, DT
The 1970s Steelers had to factor in on this list somehow, and Greene is regarded by most as the best player on those dominant teams. He was a 10-time Pro Bowler and won four Super Bowls.
9
Reggie White, DE
White led the league in sacks twice, during the era in which the aforementioned LT played in.
His Super Bowl win with the Packers in 1996 helps his case to sneak into the top 10 here.
10Barry Sanders, RB
If Sanders had that one Super Bowl title like White, he would be much higher on this list. But he’s without question the greatest “eyeball test” player of all-time. Like Brown, his early retirement hurts him on these lists.
Tom Brady has played in more Super Bowls than any other QB in history. GETTY IMAGES
