Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the Pentagon would seek a $582.7 billion defense budget next year and reshape its spending priorities to reflect a new strategic environment marked by Russian assertiveness and the rise of Islamic State. Carter, speaking to the Economic Club of Washington, said the Pentagon’s funding request would be in line with last year’s congressional budget deal but spending would be refocused to address five big challenges facing the U.S. military: Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and Islamic State. Emerson Airbnb student meant well Jack Worth claims he had no intention of breaking any rules by letting travelers stay in his dorm room suite. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Jack Worth had no interest in making headlines when he offered travelers a place to sleep on Airbnb. But the Emerson College sophomore made waves when he offered up his dorm room in the Little Building in January, and landed in enough trouble to merit a $150 fine from Airbnb and faces disciplinary actions that may go as far as his dismissal from the school. “There’s been a lot of reaction to this, both positive and negative,” Worth said. “I understand why the school wanted me to take the posting down on Friday, and when they told me to, I did.” He wouldn’t speak to the specifics of the charges, but he faces a student conduct hearing next week. There is a Change.org petition, which Worth
said he did not create nor did he ask anyone to create, called “Free Jack Worth” in support of his “entrepreneurial endeavor.” “There is nothing criminal with providing cheap housing to travelers,” Ari Howorth, an Emerson student, wrote on the petition. “Jack Worth gave travelers from far and wide a taste of Boston life and the Emerson experience simply because he wanted to help those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to stay in the downtown area. If the Emerson commu-
to protect residents and the community from exposure to safety and security risks,” spokesman Andy Tiedemann said in an email to Reuters. Worth said that he was offering travelers a place to crash for the night in downtown Boston at a fraction of the cost of what nearby hotels would charge. He said that guests were not staying with anyone else in a single room. They were signed in with security and were accompanied at all times. Three people stayed in his dorm room on three separate occasions through Airbnb, Worth said, and he had a long list of interested parties. There were no issues when the three people stayed with him, he added. “A lot of the negative feedback that I’ve received has been from people accusing me of putting the student body in danger,” Worth said. “They thought that I was inviting random strangers off the streets to come stay in my dorm. I had the ability to vet these people through Airbnb. These weren’t random people. I never wanted to put anyone in danger. I just wanted to help people out and make a little money.”

Bulger no fan of ‘Black Mass’ flick Southie mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was apparently no fan of actor Johnny Depp’s depiction of the life and times of the infamous gangster in the movie “Black Mass.” According to Complex magazine, Bulger called the film “pure fiction.” In handwritten letters being sold by Page Six, Bulger voiced his disdain for the semi-bio film, but bragged about paying off two FBI agents in exchange for tips and information. Kevin Weeks, Bulger’s right-hand muscle, gave the Daily Beast a similar reaction to the movie. “We really did kill those people,” Weeks said. “But the movie is a fantasy.” Weeks told the Daily Beast that he thought his character looked like a “knuckle-dragging moron” with “Down Syndrome.” He also said that Depp’s hairline was the only part of “Black Mass” that resembled Bulger.

BRIEF Library seeks transparent approach in prez selection The Boston Public Library is seeking public input on who its next president should be. The Library Board of Trustees and Mayor Marty Walsh assembled an executive search firm in September, and have started hosting public listening forums throughout the city’s library branches. “The new president should be a strong leader who has deep ap-
preciation for the library’s unique collections, while advocating for technological innovation and new approaches to service delivery,” Walsh said in a statement. The library’s last president, Amy Ryan, stepped down in July 2015 after landing in hot water when two valuable pieces of art were thought to have been stolen. “We want to be as open and transparent in our decisionmaking as possible,” said John Paulfrey, chair of the presidential
search committee. “People want a president who understands the diversity of the Boston neighborhoods. Boston has one of the best research libraries that rivals many spectacular collections anywhere in the world. It’s very much like a museum and an archive as well as a civic center.” The search committee has hosted six forums around the city in many of the library branches, and have more planned throughout the month
of February. With over 400 employees and 24 branches, the new president has a tall task of preservation while pioneering new steps in modern times. The committee hopes to have either one candidate, or a board of four members that would act as a presidential coalition chosen by spring 2016. The next public forum will be held on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lower Mills Branch in Dorchester. NATE HOMAN

Castor throws wrench into Bill Cosby case The sexual assault charges against Bill Cosby are up in the air after a former prosecutor took the stand for a day of testimony to claim he decided Cosby could “never” be charged for the 2004 assault. Bruce Castor, the former DA of Montgomery County in suburban Philadelphia, testified he made that decision so that the young woman who accused Cosby of sexual assault could compel Cosby to testify in a civil lawsuit. But apparently, almost no one but Castor knew or understood that this agreement existed. “To be clear, Mr. McMonagle, I’m not on your team — I want them to win,” Castor said with an enigmatic smile to Cosby’s defense lawyer Brian McMonagle, who argued at a hearing Tuesday that the case should be thrown out based on Castor’s decision.

However, Castor may be helping Cosby’s defense team a great deal with his claims. On Tuesday he testified that a press release he issued in 2005 announcing he would not charge Cosby was actually a coded declaration — to press, the broader legal community, and lawyers for Cosby and Constand — which was meant as a written declaration that Cosby could never legally be charged in this case, and could not invoke the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination in Constand’s lawsuit. His intent was to “set up the dominos to fall in such a way that Mr. Cosby would be required to testify,” he said. The lawsuit ended with an undisclosed settlement. Montgomery County DA Kevin Steele filed criminal charges against Cosby in December after
more than 50 women accused him of assault, and newly unsealed documents from Constand’s lawsuit included Cosby admitting to drugging and touching her. But Castor testified that using Cosby’s testimony in the criminal case violated his constitutional rights and the terms of Castor’s agreement with Cosby’s former lawyer Wally Phillips, who is now deceased. Prosecutors were befuddled by Castor’s defense of his claims that his 2005 press release on the case constituted a legally binding agreement, but the harshest questioning came at the end of the hearing from Judge Steven T. O’Neill. “We have an immunity statute. … Why did you not make it in writing? Why did you not do that? Do you know why you didn’t do that?” O’Neill asked Castor about the

agreement that Cosby could not be prosecuted. Castor said he did not feel any further record of his decision was needed. “A prosecutor is the minister of justice,” he said. “I thought that meant I was supposed to seek justice.” Constand waited a year to report being drugged and digitally penetrated by Cosby in his Cheltenham Township mansion in 2004, gave inconsistent versions of events to law enforcement and had multiple contacts with Cosby after the assault, he said. “She had ruined her own credibility,” he said.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Chris Martin is ‘like my brother’
ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin split in 2014, they coined their own catchphrase: “consciously uncoupling. Ever since, they’ve been redefining what it means to be exes. Since filing for divorce last April, they remain a
huge part of each other’s lives when it comes to raising their kids, Apple and Moses. In the March issue of Glamour, the actress describes Martin like a sibling — an interesting switch from being spouses, to say the least.
Kim Kardashian and Amber Rose take the selfie to end all selfies
Paltrow says, “We’re still very much a family, even though we don’t have a romantic relationship. He’s like my brother. Although she confirms they’re not living together, they might as well be. She explains, “He’s more than welcome to be with us whenever he wants. And vice versa: I sleep in his house in Malibu a lot with the kids. We’ll have a weekend all together; holidays, we’re together. We can’t wait to find out their trademark slogan for this phase of the breakup.
Remember last week when things got heated between Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa on Twitter? Their feud got ugly fast, despite West’s #CoolPantsWiz compliment. Even Amber Rose, ex of both Wiz and Kanye, got dragged into this mess. (She then posted some NSFW tweets about her and West’s sexual history ‌) There may be beef between ’Ye and Wiz, but the ladies in their lives are teaming up to say they want nothing to do with it. Kim Kardashian and Amber Rose proved this when posting the selfie to end all selfies. Kardashian captioned the snapshot, “Tea anyone?â€? — a reference to a popular Internet meme about sipping tea and minding your own business. Another caption they could have written? “Grow up, boys.â€?

Tiffani Thiessen is planning a double date with Mark-Paul Gosselaar Season 2 of “Dinner at Tiffani’s” teases a “Saved by the Bell” reunion. JAMIE PRIMEAU @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
We’re about to get a major dose of nostalgia on an upcoming episode of Tiffani Thiessen’s cooking show, “Dinner at Tiffani’s.” The second season premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on the Cooking Channel. “I can promise you some really fun people are reappearing on the show and a lot of new guests as well,” Thiessen says. “Probably the most anticipated guest is my old co-star from ‘Saved by the Bell’ Mark-Paul Gosselaar, along with his beautiful wife. We have a great episode of doubledating with my husband. I do a lobster boil, which was super fun.” Gosselaar isn’t the only co-star she keeps in touch with. Last season, Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) swung by, too. That’s the whole premise of her show — Thiessen invites pals over for dinner parties.
Her dream dinner party
When asked who she’d invite to her dream dinner party, she goes for a combo of classy and comedy. “I think it would be amazing to have the president and the first lady over, cooking for them. I’d probably be pretty nervous,” she admits. Besides the Obamas, she would pick Jimmy Fallon, who she dubs “the ultimate party guest.”
The key to a good burger The season premiere — featuring Eric Close, Matthew Lillard and Thiessen’s husband, Brady Smith — is all about burgers and beer. When asked the key to a good hamburger, Thiessen tells us the key is “not overdoing your meat.” As for her favorite thing to cook, Thiessen can’t decide. “I think you’ve just asked the impossible question,” she says with a laugh. “I like to cook everything and I am always up for a challenge.” She does share one of her favorite recipes with us, though. The star compares her honeyginger chicken wings to potato chips — you can’t eat just one. They’re the perfect Super Bowl food! Check out the recipe.
Tiffani Thiessen’s Honey-Ginger Chicken Wings Yield: 4 to 6 servings Ingredients: •1/2 cup honey •1/4 cup lime juice plus 1 tablespoon grated lime zest •1/4 cup tamari or soy sauce •3 tablespoons sesame oil • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger •3 cloves garlic, minced •2 scallions, thinly sliced (about 3 tablespoons) •Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper •16 chicken wings, tips removed, drumettes and flats separated Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, lime juice and zest, tamari, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, scallions, salt and pepper. Reserve 3/4 cup of the marinade for later use. 2. Pour the remaining marinade
into a 2-gallon zip-top bag. Add the chicken and seal the bag. Massage to distribute the marinade. Marinate, refrigerated, for at least six hours, preferably overnight. 3. Remove the chicken wings from the refrigerator and let sit for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 4. Put the wings skin-side down on the baking sheet and spoon the marinade from the bag over the wings. Cook for 20 minutes, then flip. Baste with the pan drippings, rotate the pan and cook until the honey has caramelized and the skin is a dark amber. 5. Pour the reserved 3/4 cup marinade into a small saucepan and cook until the liquid turns into a glaze. Coat the wings.

Pippin’s royal return to stage “Pippin” is back! Even after its Broadway debut in 1972, a 2013 revival took home four Tony Awards and it is now in the midst of a world tour. The show plays the Boston Opera House through Feb. 14, and we chatted with John Rubinstein, who played Pippin in the original production and returns as King Charlemagne for this tour. The seasoned stage and screen actor discusses his return to the show. Do you think this interpretation does justice to the story? Absolutely. The story is very strong. It’s a show that can be done in all kinds of different formats. “Pippin,” even though it talks about Charlemagne, can take place anywhere, even on the moon. It can be reimagined by any director. What can previous fans of “Pippin” recognize in

What has been your favorite part of performing “Pippin”? It’s been an honor to tour the U.S. and bring it to people who can’t always make it to Broadway. It’s been a wonderful treat to see and feel the enthusiasm of audiences across the country. I think everyone should see it. ALLYSON FLORIDIA

It’s no real surprise that home-improvement trends vary from generation to generation. Presumably, someone once loved that popcorn ceiling you scraped off immediately after moving in. Same goes for the layers and layers (and layers) of floral wallpaper. As for the floor-to-ceiling wood paneling, well, the ’60s gave us many gifts, and nothing in this world is free. But a survey from Better Homes and Gardens shows that millennial homeowner trends go beyond paint preferences. According to the study — which looked at 1,600 female homeowners across the U.S. — the 35-and-under set wants more than an on-trend abode. “Millennials are masters at putting personal expression into execution,” says Jill Waage, brand executive editor for Better Homes and Gardens. “They’re walking into homeownership with smartphones in the palms of their hands. They are passionate
about the process of discovering, pinning, saving, sharing — and having friends validate — their ideas and look.” How does that translate to a floor plan? Here are three of the survey’s most millennial-y findings.
1
Customize, customize, customize
After coming of age during the rise of social media, the real estate market’s newest generation wants a home that speaks to them personally. “Millennials don’t know life without being able to set, update or modify their preferences,” says Waage. “From screen savers to photo filters, customization has always been a tap or a swipe away.” Around two-thirds of survey respondents reported having a customized home was a priority, while 60 percent said a space that is “a reflection of me” is more important to them than to their parents. What’s more, millennials are willing to pay for it: 44 percent said they’re happy to pay a premium if it means getting exactly what they envisioned.
2
“Smart” features are a must
More than ever, millennials are incorporating
“smart” technology to make their homes more energy-efficient, comfortable and secure. Of those surveyed, 68 percent believed that these upgrades were a good investment, while 73 percent reported feeling safer because of them. Smart appliances were the most popular improvement, but less mainstream options are on the millennial radar as well: 36 percent of those surveyed said they would like features to track their sleep habits.
Work, meet play
3
As telecommuting becomes more popular and work hours less traditional, millennials aren’t content to work from the couch. Home offices are a popular improvement project, with 13 percent of respondents reporting that a work space was on the to-do list. But that’s not to say it’s all work and no play — compared with previous generations, millennials are also more interested in improving their recreational areas, particularly outside. On their wish lists: landscape lighting (27 percent), a fire pit (26 percent) and comfy, living-room-worthy seating (24 percent). In other words, see you never, plastic lawn chairs.

Metro readers slam our top-10 players list, we fire right back We give feedback to your feedback regarding the greatest football players of all time debate. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
As I predicted, I received plenty of hate email and hate Tweets regarding my top 10 NFL players of all time list. That’s what makes this exercise fun, of course. Most of the issues centered around Tom Brady being No. 1, as well as old men who don’t want their precious childhood memories to be diminished. Here’s some feedback to the feedback: Shawn M.: Your list is so bogus. Montana and Rice are 1-2. Neither player choked in the Super Bowl unlike Brady. Yeah [Montana and Rice] had each other but they also did not have the benefit of playing in a pass-happy league. Plus they also ran the ball with Roger Craig and Tom Rathman. John Taylor on the other side if Rice, Ronnie Lott and Ken Norton Jr. among others. Rice was great from his rookie year while Brady was sitting on the bench and won three Super Bowls because of Adam Vinatieri, the true Super Bowl MVP. Additionally, Belichick is successful only because of Brady and playing in a horrible division. He ruined the Cleveland Browns. Finally, when Brady had a legit No. 1 receiver in Randy Moss, what happened? Joe Montana would never have lost those games to the Giants the way Brady did; Montana does not get shook up like Brady does when he gets hit. Burke: Wait, so Montana and Rice are the two best football players of all time? And they just so happened to be on the same exact team during the same exact time
Top 10 1. Tom Brady, QB 2. Joe Montana, QB 3. Lawrence Taylor, LB 4. Jerry Rice, WR 5. Jim Brown, RB 6. John Elway, QB 7. Peyton Manning, QB 8. Joe Greene, DT 9. Reggie White, DE 10. Barry Sanders, RB
period? That’s one hell of a coincidence. Oh, and when Brady had Randy Moss, all the Patriots did was win more games in one season than any team in the history of the league. Remember, the 1972 Dolphins played during a time when the NFL had a 14-game regular season. They finished the year 17-0. The 2007 Patriots finished that season 18-1. I’d say, overall, the Brady-Moss thing worked out just fine. And rattling off all the great players Montana and Rice played with only strengthens the argument for Brady as the best ever. Brady did more with less. @letswork225: Just read your top 10 NFL all-time list. Where is Walter Payton? Also, Brady lost two Super Bowls. He can’t be No. 1. Burke: If it was a top-20 list, Payton would surely be on there. But he won his lone Super Bowl because that season’s Bears happened to own the greatest defense of all time. I also don’t value the running back position as much as the QB position and Payton is not the greatest back of all time. Emmitt Smith overtook Payton as the all-time rushing leader and Barry Sanders would have blown both of their numbers out of the water if he hadn’t gone all Calvin Johnson on the poor Lions. @EminemsRevenge: Joe Montana is the UNDISPUTED greatest NFL player of all time!
Tom Brady walked off the field a loser in two Super Bowls while Joe Montana was a perfect 4-0 in the Big Game. GETTY IMAGES
Montana broke his back and was NEVER supposed to WALK again, won two more Super Bowls. Brady got hit in the mouth [against the Giants] and had NO FIGHT in him no more. Burke: Are you questioning Brady’s toughness?
Did you watch the AFC title game? Brady took more abuse in that game than any QB ever has in a 60-minute contest and was able to orchestrate a late fourth-quarter touchdown drive. Brady doesn’t get enough credit for his durability. Steve
Young got his job with the 49ers because the organization thought Montana was breaking down. Tony B.: What about Dick Butkus? Johnny Unitas? This is age discrimination.
Burke: Yup, it’s absolutely age discrimination. Dick Butkus is 73 years old, brotha. If he and J.J. Watt had a bare-knuckles fight there’d be two sounds: Butkus getting decked in the jaw, and Butkus hitting the canvas.
