POWELL’S EMAIL ACCOUNT US LABOR MARKET

1

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and aides to his successor Condoleezza Rice both received classified emails on personal email accounts, the top Democrat on a key congressional oversight panel said Thursday. House Oversight Committee ranking Democrat Elijah Cummings said the disclosures about the emails were made by the State Department’s inspector general, who is reviewing email practices of five previous secretaries of state. The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, suggesting some loss of momentum in the labor market amid a sharp economic slowdown and stock market selloff. Signs of creeping employment weakness were also flagged by another report Thursday showing a 218 percent jump in announced job cuts by U.S.-based employers in January. The planned layoffs were concentrated in the energy and retail sectors. REUTERS

TROUBLE FOR GoPro

GoPro’s fall from grace has created a rush by traders to short the camera maker’s stock, but they may soon face a squeeze as institutional shareholders sell their shares after six months of declines. GoPro’s troubles worsened when it forecast current-quarter revenue well below analysts’ estimates, adding to a string of disappointments by a company that a year ago was a Wall Street favorite. A mother and child who were struck by a car on Tuesday have been released from the hospital, police said. The older child, however, is still in critical condition. Police are still scouring the city for the perpetrator who plowed down the three as they were crossing the street just before 1 p.m. at Broad and Dickinson streets in South Philly. Police said the female suspect was driving a red, two-door Honda Accord with a sunroof, which may now be missing its passenger-side mirror. Anyone with any information is asked to call police. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s three-and-a-half-year stay in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid rape investigation in Sweden amounts to “arbitrary detention,” a United Nations panel will rule Friday. Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to unveil his proposal for the state’s 2017 budget on Tuesday even though state lawmakers have yet to fully agree on the current spending plan that has languished half-baked as political acrimony has escalated. Chicks ‘n’ wings: Two women compete in Wing Bowl for first time ever Danny Marine CONTRIBUTED

Two former servicewomen are going toe-totoe — or should we say wing-to-wing — for the first time in Wing Bowl history. A female veteran power eater and a novice are stretching their stomachs to beat out their male counterparts and be the first ones to earn the title of Wing Bowl champion Friday at the Wells Fargo Center. Molly Schuyler and Danielle Gatlos join 94WIP Sports Radio host Angelo Cataldi, Dennis Rodman, the Wingettes, rumors of a Snooki appearance, and more than 20,000 fans for a morning of chicken wing eating, drunken debauchery, nearly naked women and a ton of buffalo wing sauce for the 2016 Wing Bowl. Interestingly enough, most think of the Wing Bowl as a male-dominated competition. But, this year, Schuyler and Gatlos are changing the game. “I think the sport needs to be broadened,” said Schuyler, 36. She said her goal Friday is to beat last year’s

wing-eating record of 440. Schuyler spent much of Thursday at New Jersey’s Rizzieri day spa — her first ever at a spa or salon, and compliments of Sportsradio 94WIP. As for chowing down against another female for the first time, Schuyler said she couldn’t be happier. “We’re an Air Force family. We’re both from the services. I have total respect [for Gatlos]. That’s awesome. I can’t wait to meet her.” While Schuyler likes cheesy garlic and barbecue wings, Gatlos prefers hers sweet and spicy. She said she’s been practicing with “naked,” dry wings to boost her tolerance. At age 26 and hailing from suburban Eagleville, Gatlos left the Marine Corps as a sergeant and served seven years active duty out of Beaufort, South Carolina. In 2014, she won Chick’s Tavern’s Mussel Bowl in Bridgeport, when she became the first person ever to break the bar’s record of 300 mussels in two five-minute rounds. She downed 309 mussels that day. “I’m a fatty at heart,” she said. “Anything good, I just love to eat.”

Lessons from Cosby’s first major hearing Here’s what the hearing on Cosby’s motion to dismiss tells us about the criminal case against Cosby. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

What happened to Autumn Jackson? You may have heard of Autumn Jackson. Her mother was one of Cosby’s mistresses, and newspaper accounts say Jackson demanded $40 million from Cosby to not go to the press with the story of their relationship. Cosby acknowledged providing funds to Jackson through her life, although he denied being her biological father and refused to take a paternity test. Jackson wound up charged with extortion in federal court for demanding millions and tearfully

apologized for the crime before being sentenced to 26 months. However, during the Cosby hearing, Constand’s civil lawyer, Dolores Troiani, referred to that case as a set-up by Cosby and said it was the reason Constand wouldn’t accept a pay-out from Cosby. Here’s where it gets tricky. Troiani said convicted extorter Jackson had received funds from Bill Cosby before being charged and convicted. That’s why Constand went to Troiani for legal advice after Cosby put his offer on the table.

What Cosby wants Legal issues with the charges against Cosby, including those raised at his Wednesday hearing, are so complex that appeals on specific issues could potentially take months, if not years. For example, Judge Steven T. O’Neill ruled from the bench against

Montco DA Kevin Steele should be disqualified from the case.

the motion to dismiss charges due to the argument that Cosby ceded his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and testified in Constand’s civil lawsuit because of a non-prosecution agreement. The decision was not issued in writing. After Cosby’s lawyers requested a written decision, O’Neill said the law did not require it and he would

not do so. However, any matter concerning potential constitutional violations is of interest to an appellate court. Beyond that, questions remain that could contribute to appeals that, even if unsuccessful, could delay the trial indefinitely — such as whether Constand illegally wiretapped phone calls with Cosby or if current

Former Montco DA Bruce Castor is known for being touchy with the press. He shut down his social media accounts after a Facebook rant implying reporters knocking on his door could be shot dead by his wife and “Mr. Ruger,” and is rumored to have threatened a Times Herald reporter with a lawsuit over the use of the word “may.” During his testimony on Tuesday, Castor presented an enigmatic and at times baffling vision of his handling of the Cosby case and his powers as a district attorney. “To be clear Mr. [Brian] McMonagle, [Cosby’s lawyer] ‘I’m not on your team, I want them to win,’” Castor said with a Cheshire cat smile, after testifying for hours as a

defense witness. Castor said as DA, he was the “minister of justice,” and after deciding Constand had “ruined her own credibility” and would never be believed in court, that he wanted Cosby “punished” in civil court and today hopes he “made her a millionaire.” Castor also claimed his permanent non-prosecution deal with Cosby was done for Constand’s lawyers’ benefit and with their consent, but they both denied any knowledge of the deal a day later. When confronted with his quotes to media making wildly contradictory claims, Castor clammed up. These inconsistencies and vague statements likely gave current Montco DA Kevin Steele the grounds to win on his argument that Castor’s credibility went “out the window” regarding his assertion of a non-prosecution deal.

AG Kane’s war chest depleted by legal woes Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane remains in office despite a tumultuous Porngate scandal, criminal charges and calls for her resignation. Now, the fight to defend herself is costing her a pretty penny. The Kathleen Kane for Pennsylvania campaign war chest spent $327,000 in 2015 — about $300,000 of which went to her white shoe attorneys, PennLive.com reported. Former lawyer to mafia boss John Gotti, Gerald Shargel’s New York firm Winston & Strawn, is representing Kane in the criminal case and reportedly received $150,000. Lanny Davis, former special counsel to President Bill Clinton, reportedly got $130,059 for “crisis communica-

tions” services. He was Kane’s media representative in the wake of the charges. Scranton attorney Amil Minora reportedly got $19,228 to assist Shargel. Meanwhile, Kane didn’t raise any money in 2015, according to the Inquirer. Approximately $246,000 remains in

her campaign fund. She spent $4 million winning her 2012 race for office. Kane recently asked a special prosecutor, Douglas Gansler, former Attorney General of Maryland, to review all state emails in the quest to find everything connected with the so-called Porngate scandal. Meanwhile, attorneys in her own office have questioned the legality of her decision to appoint Gansler. In the meantime, the House Judiciary Committee will soon take up questions of whether they can begin impeachment proceedings against Kane. Kane’s trial on charges of leaking grand jury information to the press to embarrass her political enemies is scheduled for August. SAM NEWHOUSE

STORM TO DELIVER WET KISS ON PHILADELPHIA A rapidly intensifying storm now moving quickly up the coast will make your morning commute a snowy mess. This storm has been handled badly by all of the computer models, as it was supposed to pass harmlessly out to sea. However, over the past 18 to 24 hours, a significant shift to the west in the storm track, along with a more intense system, has caught us off-guard. The biggest impact today will be for southern New England, where the rain will be changing over to heavy wet snow with Boston possibly receiving as much as 4 to 8 inches before the storm pulls away later in the day. The Capes could see more than 6 inches as well and the combination of the heavy, wet snow and strong winds may lead to scattered power outages. Philly and New York City should see a slushy mess as the overnight rain changes to morning snow. Roadways could become covered as the

Bolaris’ Weather Watch

@weathersavior

The rain that spread in from the south and east overnight will be changing over to wet snow, and for a time the snow could come down at a moderate to heavy clip. Luckily for us, temperatures have been well above freezing over the past 24 hours and this will greatly help in keeping the impact of this storm to a minimum — perhaps 1 to 3 inches in and around Philly, and especially so on the grassy surfaces. But if the snow intensity starts to ramp up, Roadways, especially secondary roads, could provide a slick morning commute. However, 2 to 4 inches plus could accumulate across interior eastern New Jersey where heavier banding should take place. Shore locations would see less as mixing will hold amounts down. The storm is a rapid mover, so I’m expecting a return to sunshine by Friday afternoon.

snow intensity reaches its maximum during your morning commute. Eastern New Jersey will be closer toward the storm center and this should lead to higher amounts of snow in all locations across eastern New Jersey, except along the shore points, where plenty of mixing will take place. Philly could receive about 1 to 3 inches of snow, especially on grassy surfaces, with higher amounts to the east of I-95. The saving grace with this storm is that it is a quick mover and this will keep snow amounts limited across Philly and NYC, where the sun will return by Friday afternoon. Uncertainties remain in the forecast for early next week.

IF SANDERS WERE A WOMAN, HE’D BE UNELECTABLE When I saw how little Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton beat opponent Bernie Sanders by in the Iowa caucuses this week, I was surprised. Taking less than a percentage point loss, Sanders redefined the defeat as a “virtual tie.” The senator from Vermont has been framed as the underdog in this race, going up against a presumable front-runner who is a party favorite. Sanders’ platform speaks of a “revolution,” going after the big banks while liberating the 99 Percent. Clinton is more reserved than that, choosing to push policy that will help mend the current congressional divides instead. At first glance, it’s easy to position Sanders as “The People’s Champ” going up against the establishment. But then you have to remember that Sanders is an old white man who has been in office for decades, while Clinton is an experienced stateswoman trying to prove to American once again that she’s presidential material. If the gender roles were reversed, we wouldn’t be giving Sanders this much attention. Pound-for-pound, he lacks the political capital, experience and pedigree

that Hillary possesses. Suddenly, when the tables are turned in favor of female empowerment, it’s no longer desirable for candidates to be well connected. This revelation exposes how much the nation’s deep-seated sexism plays a role in imposing double standards on women running for office. For one, since when did having too much experience become a political sin? Many supporters tout Sanders’ linear voting record as a way of countering the more administrative moves made by Clinton throughout the years.

Although senatorial votes are important, they don’t compare to the significance of that role and secretary of state combined. Hillary has respectfully worn both hats and has tackled different sets of challenges that are more complex than just taking a stand on behalf of a small state. In other words, it’s easier for Sanders to declare bold solutions in Congress because such decisions aren’t as risky or immediate as the ones Hillary’s had to make during her more diverse leadership. She shouldn’t be penalized for not being a radical revolutionary when working under a more levelheaded commander in chief. But Bernie knows nothing about those obstacles because, unlike Hillary, he’s kept the same job. And for many voters, his male privilege still entitles him to be qualified for the presidency. Meanwhile, Hillary’s had to humble herself after initially losing to President Obama in 2008, then working in his administration to prove she was worthy of running again. It would be immature to label her as a spoiled political successor when she has broken multiple glass ceilings in order to be taken seriously again. If the GOP could give Mitt Romney a second shot after his failed bid in 2008, Democrats owe it to Hillary to see what she will do this time. I could see it if Vice President Biden was up against Clinton, but Sanders’ hyper-liberal pandering shouldn’t hold as much of a candle to her. Let’s not forsake our progressiveness when it comes to women.

“If the gender roles were reversed, we wouldn’t be giving Sanders this much attention. Pound-for-pound, he lacks the political capital, experience and pedigree that Hillary possesses.”

Emails show officials knew of Flint water Legionnaires’ risk Legionnaires’ is a type of pneumonia caused by inhaling mist infected with the bacteria Legionella. The mist may come from air-conditioning units for large buildings, hot tubs or showers. Emails between Michigan state officials show they knew about an uptick in Legionnaires’ disease and that it could be linked to problems with Flint water many months before Gov. Rick Snyder said he received information of the outbreak. Snyder said in January that he had just learned about the rise in Legionnaires’ cases. However, emails obtained by the liberal group Progress Michigan and released

to reporters on Thursday show Snyder’s principal adviser, Harvey Hollins, was made aware of the outbreak and a possible link to the use of Flint River water last March. Flint, a city near Detroit, was under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager when it switched the source of its tap water from Detroit’s system to

the Flint River in April 2014. The city switched back last October after tests found high levels of lead in blood samples taken from children. The more corrosive water from the river leached more lead from the city pipes than Detroit water did. Lead is a toxic agent that can damage the nervous sys-

tem. A spokesman for Snyder could not immediately be reached for comment. In Washington, Senate Democrats teamed up with a band of Republicans on Thursday to block a wide-ranging U.S. energy bill in a fight over aid to help Flint cope with the drinking water crisis. REUTERS

Four anti-government activists still occupying a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon have been indicted, along with 12 others previously arrested on charges of impeding federal officers during a monthlong armed standoff at the compound. The indictment, filed in federal court in Oregon and unsealed Thursday, supersedes an earlier criminal complaint that charged protest leader Ammon Bundy and others with impeding by “force, intimidation, and threats officers and employees

of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the performance of their duties. The occupation began on Jan. 2, when Bundy, his brother Ryan and other followers took over buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in remote eastern Oregon in the latest flare-up of a decades-old conflict over

federal control of millions of acres in the West. It also says the protesters recruited others in person and over social media to join their ranks beginning in November, and, in October, warned the sheriff of Harney County in the nearby town of Burns of “extreme civil unrest if their demands were unmet, among other acts of intimidation. The Bundy brothers and nine others were arrested last week in Oregon, most of them during a confrontation with FBI and state police on a snow-covered roadside where a spokesman for the group, Robert “LaVoy Finicum, was shot to death. A 12th member of the group turned himself in to police in Arizona. REUTERS

Shkreli laughs off questions from lawmakers, calls them ‘imbeciles’ Former drug executive Martin Shkreli laughed off questions about drug prices and tweeted that lawmakers were imbeciles Thursday when he appeared at a congressional hearing against his will. Shkreli, 32, sparked outrage last year among patients, medical societies and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton after his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, raised the price of 62-year-old Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent to $750 a pill. The lifesaving medicine, used to treat a parasitic infection, once sold for $1 a pill. At a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Shkreli repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment, which ensures that no person can be compelled

in any criminal case “to be a witness against himself. Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, asked Shkreli what he would tell a single, pregnant woman with AIDS who needed Daraprim to survive, and whether he thought he had done anything wrong. Shkreli declined to answer. “I intend to follow the advice of my counsel, not yours, said Shkreli

after South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy suggested he could answer questions that were unrelated to pending fraud charges against him. Shkreli wrote on Twitter: “Hard to accept that these imbeciles represent the people in our government.â€? Elijah Cummings learned about the tweet while Turing Chief Commercial Officer Nancy Retzlaff was testifying,

Rep. John Mica, a Florida Republican, said he would consider asking lawmakers to hold Shkreli in contempt for his behavior.Â

pounded his fist on the dais. The Maryland Democrat then shouted about an internal Turing document in which a staffer joked about the price increase. “You all spent all of your time strategizing about how to hide your price increase ... and coming up with stupid jokes while other people were sitting there trying to figure out how they were going to survive, Cummings said. wknd In the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” Josh Brolin plays a slightly nicer version of notorious Hollywood “fixer” Eddie Mannix. ALISON ROSA

THE FUN STARTS HERE

Josh Brolin freaks out The actor worries about how good his acting is, even when working on the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Hollywood runs in Josh Brolin’s genes — he’s the son of actor James Brolin. So it’s appropriate that he’s starring in “Hail, Caesar!,” a portrait of Golden Age Hollywood circa the 1950s. The Oscar nominee, 47, plays Eddie Mannix, a softened version of Tinseltown’s most notorious “fixer”: a studio figure whose job involved covering up scandals, even ones about sex and murder. Brolin’s third film with the Coens (after “No Country for Old Men” and “True Grit”) finds him dealing with an AWOL star (George Clooney) and other headaches.

Like a lot of Coen films, there’s a lot to unpack on first viewing. It was very interesting to watch it. I didn’t think it was nearly as interesting when I was doing it. And I’m the first guy to watch a movie I’m in and say, “Eh, it’s OK!” I was as objective as I could be, and I thought it was one of their better films. Is that nerve-wracking for you, watching a film once it’s completed? It’s enervating. It’s unnerving. You [the audience] are seeing it after the fact, but I’m starting it before anything happens. We’re all living in nervousness about what could go wrong. [Laughs] This role is hyperspecific but the guidelines are so general. There’s no way to play it with any specificity. There’s a lot of room for failure. Which I like, in hindsight, but not during the process. I hate it during the process.

The movie’s version of Eddie Mannix isn’t exactly the real one. Did you still do a deep dive into Hollywood history? I wasn’t told by the brothers that it wasn’t the same guy, maybe because they were interested in me finding him for myself. Not that he’s nothing like him. He’s still Norman Mailersimian-brutish. But he’s very different when it comes to his faith and his family, which he’s pretty hardcore about. He’s a fairly diplomatic and nice guy. The real Eddie Mannix was violent all-around. I read a book called “The Fixers,” which had [fellow fixer] Howard Strickling and [studio heads] Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg. He’s an amalgamation of all those guys. His levity, his religious beliefs — all that’s Thalberg.

You better believe there’s some good hugging in the new Nicholas Sparks thing. LIONSGATE

“The Choice” Director: Ross Katz Stars: Teresa Palmer, Ben Walker Rating: PG-13

••••• Is the new Nicholas Sparks mess supposed to be funny? Like, on purpose? It’s surreal watching “The Choice,” this year’s cornball soap about sun-dappled lovers writing notes to each other and saying things like, “You remember what you said while holding my hand under the stars?” until one of them gets into an accident or dies. But sometimes it seems like “The Choice” has gone rogue and realized these movies are best treated as jokes. Either way, it delivers the goods, such as they are. Good ol’ boy North Carolinian Travis (Ben Walker) is a day-drinking louse with a Sexy Foghorn Leghorn accent and bad hair. He’s the usual Sparks bro, ripe for reform by a kindly, hot woman. She arrives in the form of Gabby (Teresa Palmer), an aspiring doctor who isn’t one of

the author’s usual willowy ladyfriends. She’s perky and excitable, sometimes acting like she’s in a Kate Hudson rom-com. At calmer times they remark knowingly on hitting all the story beats, including the requisite leftfield God talk. Is “The Choice” trying to break free of formula? Sometimes, a little, maybe. You can sometimes sense it nudging things away from the strict parameters of the franchise into something genuinely charming, even genuinely romantic. Gabby and Travis’ first hook-up is actually steamy (in a tasteful PG-13 way, natch). It’s even set to The National, which in the tasteful confines of the Sparks Cinematic Universe is like blasting GG Allin. “The Choice” might have even gotten away with it if it wasn’t for that meddling third act. Not even a concentrated saboteur could ruin the mawkishness to come, which isn’t even inspired, far from the tasteless insanity that made “Safe Harbor” and “The Best of Me” instant camp classics. Sparks, as always, wins. MATT PRIGGE

“Hail, Caesar!â€? is the lightest, most eet-footed ďŹ lm the Coen brothers have yet made — but if you know the Coens, you know they’re rarely more serious than when they’re having fun. Like “Burn After Reading,â€? it’s a secret reminder of cosmic insigniďŹ cance and existential dread, in this case couched in catnip to both Coen heads and TCM addicts. It takes a long, deep stew in Golden Age Hollywood, tossing o veiled references to swimming pool star Esther Williams, the strange (and once insanely popular) genre of singing cowboys and, most prominently, Eddie Mannix, the notorious â€œďŹ xerâ€? who kept scandals perpetrated by MGM property (i.e., its stars) out of the papers. Naturally the Coens make him our hero — or a softened, ďŹ ctionalized version, anyway. We see 36 hours in the life of Brolin’s deadpan Mannix, a day that begins well before dawn and is so jam-packed he doesn’t even seem ustered when one

“Hail, Caesar! features lots of old genres being recreated, including a sailor musical starring Channing Tatum. ALISON ROSA

of his stars (George Clooney) is drugged and kidnapped by a group of commie screenwriters. After all, he has to get rid of slimy photographers, distract gossip columnists (played by dueling Tilda Swintons) and ďŹ nd a husband for an Esther Williams-type (Scarlett Johansson), whose out-of-wedlock pregnancy means she soon won’t ďŹ t into what she calls her â€œďŹ sh a–â€? mermaid costume.

There’s a lot of plot but, like “The Big Lebowski, none of it really matters and it intentionally peters out. Tangents are welcome, and at worst “Hail, Caesar! is a battering ram of one great scene after another, many of them recreations of B-Westerns, Biblical epics, dramas and two separate types of musicals. As ever, the Coens mix love with mockery, and since this is

one of their comedies — like “Burn After Reading,â€? the bleakest (and maybe funniest) of all their ďŹ lms — the dark underbelly hurts creeps up on you. If the Hollywood focus connects it to “Barton Fink,â€? it shares equal amounts of DNA with “A Serious Man,â€? only with the perspective on a godlike ďŹ gure himself. The Super Bowl should be held the Sunday before Presidents’ Day. It doesn’t matter whether they accomplish this by delaying the game a week or by tinkering with Washington’s birth certificate, but one way or another we need to arrange it so more people have the day after the Super Bowl off work. This would enable us to ease back into the week after drinking beer and yelling at the TV all night, plus it would have the added bonus of throwing the dating-industrial complex into a fake tizzy whenever the game coincided with Valentine’s Day. Imagine all the hypothetical relationships we could pretend it wrecked! But alas, the Super

Bowl still comes a week too early, which means you only have a couple days left to stockpile beer. You could drink the same thing you always do, but why not get a little festive with it and do some regional theme-drinking? Presented below are beer suggestions representing both teams, plus the host city and your own hometown losers.

Denver Broncos The Broncos are going to lose by 20, but at least they’ll get to slink back home to a great beer state. If you’re supporting their doomed endeavor, prepare yourself for the inevitable with Great Divide Titan IPA, a potent (7.1 percent alcohol-byvolume) and bitter blend of citrus and pine. If you’d rather bask in their demise, go with Joe’s Premium American Pilsner from Avery Brewing, a crisp, floral and superior version of the

Super Bowl 50: 10 storylines Will it be Peyton Manning’s ride into the sunset or Cam Newton’s kingmaker? EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

You’ve heard all the talk (or maybe you’ve tuned it out) from the players during this week’s ramp up to the Super Bowl. And while the impending 60-minute dogfight between the Broncos and Panthers may not have the same sex appeal as games in the recent past, there are a bevy of interesting storylines in this one that will undoubtedly be brought to your attention during Sunday’s four-hour broadcast. Here’s a brief primer on the top things to know about before kickoff this weekend as the Super Bowl reaches the half-

as John Elway did nearly two decades ago? This could be the last time we see a living legend play the game we love.

century mark.

1Peyton’s farewell?

His regular season numbers are astronomical — 71,940 passing yards, 539 touchdowns and 251 interceptions. His playoff numbers are just average — Manning is 13-13 in 26 playoff games and has just one Super Bowl ring in 18 years. Back again at age 39, what better way to call it a career and begin a walk to the NFL Hall of Fame than with a world championship with the Broncos, just

2Cam’s coronation?

Carolina fans have watched Cam Newton mature over the last three seasons into the NFL’s MVP frontrunner and he certainly deserves much of the credit for the Panthers’ high-octane offense this season. Should he succeed in Sunday’s big game and become a Super Bowl champion,

Andrew Luck) and joined Elway’s retooling of the Broncos fresh off their Tim Tebow experiment. But Manning recovered from back surgery and led the Broncos to the Super Bowl two seasons ago when they lost to the Seahawks in embarrassing fashion. At age 39, Manning once again is on the precipice of a title. Can he close the deal?

3Defensive clash

Both the Broncos and Panthers are killers against the run, allowing the second and third least rushing yards in the NFL this season. Carolina led all teams with an impressive 24 interceptions, while both the Broncos and Panthers created 22 fumbles, tied for the most in football. Look for the turnover battle and battle for possession time to be key Sunday night.

5Stormin’ Norman

He played football at Costal Carolina. Yes, that’s a college. And after four big interceptions, shut down cornerback status and some entertaining quotes (seemingly every single week), Josh Norman is one of the key cogs in Super Bowl 50. In the tradition of Malcolm Butler and Richard Sherman before him, Norman enters the biggest stage confident. “This is what we’ve

It’s been buried but it’s still kind of a big deal. Are allegations that Manning used HGH accurate? Last season it didn’t seem to matter whether Deflategate was true, it stole the narrative of Super Bowl XLIX as well as the entire offseason. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The longer the Eagles wait, the less likely Bradford will sign in Philly Why hasn’t there been any news on Sam Bradford’s status with the Eagles lately? EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

The Eagles currently have exclusive rights to negotiate contracts with their current players. It’s resulted in contract extensions to Lane Johnson, Zach Ertz, Vinny Curry and Brent Celek in moves that many credit Howie Roseman (who is, more or less the Eagles’ personnel head) for doing a good job. But a few big ones loom large, particularly an expected extension for Fletcher Cox. Quarterback is the most important position in all of sports, and many

in the Eagles organization — like head coach Doug Pederson or passcatchers Ertz and Jordan Matthews — have had nothing but good things to say about Sam Bradford. “I think he’s excited,â€? Zach Ertz said of Bradford last week after he signed a deal that guaranteed him $21 million. â€œHe wants to be in Philadelphia. Whether he’s back here or not, that’s none of my business, honestly. He’s going to do what’s best for him and the Eagles are going to do what’s best for us. But at the end of the day, I think he does want to be here.â€? So what’s the hold up? The NFL’s salary cap has gone up by about $10 million each of the past few years and is expected to do so once again. With Bradford’s

salary demands likely in the $20 million per season range, there really should be enough room for the team to keep him and re-sign everyone else they want to re-sign. And yes, that means even with Cox signing what is being rumored to be a $100 million deal. But the longer they wait, the less likely it seems the team will have Bradford’s services in 2016. One reason for the delay could be the franchise tag, which is permitted to be used until the end of February. The Eagles are no stranger to the tag, having used it on DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick and L.J. Smith in recent seasons. But if they don’t act by the March 1 franchise tag deadline, the Birds could be looking to go in a different direction.Â

Flyers continue vigorous stretch with a weekend back-to-back The Flyers are in the midst of playing 15 games in 28 days. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Ice hockey is a physical game. And there’s a reason why they don’t play games every day, like they do in Major League Baseball. But that didn’t stop NHL schedule-makers from scheduling 15 Flyers games in the month of February. It’s a marathon and a spring all mixed into one. “We’re not going to have a lot of practice opportunities here, especially over the next month,â€? Reserved for:Dave Flyers head coach Hakstol said. â€œIt’s about

being ready to play on game day, doing whatever that takes physically

and mentally and we got to do as good a job as we can being fresh physical-

ly and allowing ourselves to be fresh mentally.â€? The action doesn’t relent this weekend, as Philly will host division rivals the Rangers Saturday (at 1 p.m. on CSN) before heading to the nation’s capital to play Washington Sunday (at noon on NBC). It’s a tough back-toback, especially with the Flyers trailing both the Rangers and Capitals in the standings as they chase a spot in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. But the Flyers aren’t complaining. “Sometimes it’s better when you play every other day,â€? Jakub Voracek said. â€œI don’t like practice as much, I’d rather play the games. It’s good for us, we have to make sure we find a way to win.â€?
