For Tory Bullock, nothing is as magical as a snow day. So the 28-year-old Boston actor, educator and video extraordinaire has made it his mission to share his love for the wintry mini-vacations with the world. “I want people to start acknowledging how amazing snow days are,” Bullock told Metro. “If it was up to me, I would make the first snow day in the city of Boston a holiday because nothing is more fun.” Sunday night, following news that classes would be cancelled for Boston Public Schools on Monday, Bullock posted a video of himself rapping about his joy at reading a text about the news over

students, fellow teachers and others who just remember the feeling only a snow day can bring. They’ve popped up in teachers union newsletters, been shared among former students and garnered hundreds of comments on Facebook from people sharing his

excitement. His video from the school cancellation on Friday, which featured him rapping over the theme from “Rocky,” was picked up by the “Today” show. He said he picks his theme music based on the vibe he gets from the announcement. He said he already had his song picked out in case school is cancelled Tuesday, but said it’s top secret. Bullock’s many videos — improvised riffs on issues of the day, sketches and the like — have had a wide audience before. One video from January, in which he shared his opinion on the Oscars’ lack of black nominees, was viewed more than 400,000 times. He said by speaking his mind online, he hopes to inspire his students

to express themselves. Bullock works with a program called Urban Improv, where he leads improvisation workshops for students at a dozen Boston schools, focusing on conflict resolution and discussions about topics like racism, homophobia and good nutrition, he said. “It’s about being present in the moment,” he said. “When the kids watch these videos I hope they take away, ‘Wow. He’s in the moment.’” At least for Monday, Bullock said he planned to spend his moments lounging on his couch in his XXL onesie, sipping hot chocolate, watching his favorite TV show (“Dawson’s Creek”) and maybe having a snowball fight. “Anything can happen on a snow day,” he said.

Weather No snow emergency, no T changes: Walsh Anticipating that snow would stop falling around midnight, Walsh said he did not plan to call a snow emergency on Tuesday, meaning the city will make it through the storm without needing a parking ban, and without making it legal to secure parking spots with space-savers. “If you put a space-saver out there, public works will come and take it,â€? Mayor Marty Walsh said at an evening press conference. Walsh also said the MBTA planned to run on a normal schedule Tuesday. Boston was largely spared the worst of the storm as it moved out toward the Atlantic Monday. Still, the mayor urged residents to avoid driving if possible while crews continued to clear roadways. The city has spent $7 million of its snow budget so far this year, he said. Boston last year spent $38 million on snow costs. Since the storm began Monday, Boston received 1,400 messages via its 311 phone service and smartphone app, Walsh said. SPENCER BUELL

IndyCar haters to speak out Opponents of Boston’s first Grand Prix plan to sound off at Tuesday night’s public hearing. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

Opponents of the IndyCar race slated to hit Boston’s Seaport District this year are hoping they can rally Bostonians and commuters behind their cause, aiming to stop the event they say would be noisy and disruptive. An advocacy group called the Coalition Against IndyCar Boston plan to make their case at a public hearing Tuesday night at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. So far, though, the campaign has struggled. Although it has adopted the language of the antiOlympics movement —

But Lurie said he and other members of the coalition believe they can get more Bostonians to join in the opposition. “The more people learn about the race, the more they are upset about it,” he said. The coalition of neighbors and employees say the IndyCar race was poorly conceived, that it would have negative impacts on a neighborhood which already has traffic issues, and that the required annual construction work would put too much of the burden for the race on those who live and work along the proposed race route, which snakes around the convention center and streets in the South Boston neighborhood. “We think this race is a travesty, frankly. It’s the wrong place and the wrong time to foist this on the fastest-growing area in the city,” said Larry Bishoff, a co-chair of the coalition. Members also cite concerns about the environmental impact, including worries about decibel levels during the race and what they described as the threat of releasing toxic chemicals during construction

on Cypher Street. Lurie said about 120 showed up for a similar neighborhood meeting in Fort Point earlier this year. He said the coalition may decide to host its own meetings “if the momentum continues to grow,” he said. “Right now we’re just trying to get the word out.” Speaking to Motor Sport.com last month, the CEO of IndyCar’s parent company downplayed neighbors’ concerns. “I have to hope that either this letter has come from a very small group of people who have their objections, or that once the event happens, they will un-

Volpe, a 38-year-old who has lived in his Seaport apartment for 12 years, said he believes many who live in other Boston neighborhoods forget how many people have homes in the booming district better known for its office towers and restaurants. He said demonstrators are on a “time crunch” to change public opinion ahead of a race that is now just a few months away. The Grand Prix of Boston is scheduled to take place Sept. 2-4. Coalition members said race organizers have already started bringing some of the barriers needed to construct the course into the city. “There isn’t a lot of time to get the word out,” Volpe said. “I’m confident we can do that and as more and more people find out about it they’ll object to it and kind of join the cause against it.”

Woman who accused Bill Clinton of assault to campaign against Hillary presidential run One of the women who has accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual assault says she has agreed to work for an anti-Clinton political group being formed by a former advisor to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Kathleen Willey, a former White House volunteer who

says Bill Clinton groped her in an Oval Office hallway in 1993 when she came to him tearfully seeking a paid job, said she had agreed to become a paid national spokeswoman for a group being created by Roger Stone. Stone, a Republican strategist, said the group would become active should Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton’s wife, win the Democratic nomination in the 2016 race for the White House. Clinton is currently the

front-runner. “This gives me more of an opportunity to get this message out to young voters who weren’t even born or don’t even remember what happened and to the women who have suffered,” Willey told Reuters. Willey said she will give interviews and speeches and appear in political advertisements to ensure the accusations remain part of the political discourse during the election

campaign. “They’re going to be confronted every day, on radio, on television, on billboards,” Stone told Reuters, referring to the Clintons. He said he had reached a verbal agreement with Willey but cautioned that the group was still in the planning stages. Spokespeople for Hillary and Bill Clinton did not respond to questions about Willey. REUTERS

Couple, too drunk to drive, give keys to 9-year-old A Wisconsin couple allowed their 9-year-old daughter to drive them and their 11-month-old baby because they were too drunk to do so themselves, according to Polk County Circuit Court records. Jason Roth, 36, and Amanda Eggert, 32, pleaded not guilty at the court on Friday to charges of recklessly endangering safety and neglecting a child, according to online records. On Jan. 31, a sheriff’s deputy responded to a call about an erratic driver and found the couple and their children parked at a boat drop in Polk County, about 75 miles northeast of Minneapolis,

according to a criminal complaint. The deputy arrested the couple when he learned that their 9-yearold daughter was driving them and their baby home in their pickup truck because they were both intoxicated, according to the complaint from the county prosecutor’s office. Eggert also faces several charges stemming from a fight she had with paramedics who arrived to help her with a cut on her hand suffered when she was snowmobiling earlier in the day, court records showed. Lawyers for the couple were not immediately available for comment. REUTERS

BRIEF Two shot dead, four wounded after Mississippi Mardi Gras parade Authorities on Monday investigated a shooting in which two people were killed and four others wounded after a Mardi Gras parade in a Mississippi Gulf Coast town, police said. Officers directing traffic heard shots fired shortly after the parade ended Sunday, Pass Christian Police Chief Timothy Hendricks said at a news conference Monday. Two men died at the scene, he said, and four others were wounded and treated at a hospital. Two of the wounded were in stable condition Monday afternoon and two others were released, Hendricks said. There were no immediate

arrests. Hendricks said he did not consider the incident an act of terrorism, or being racially motivated. “It’s a horrible act,” he said during a news conference webcast by WLOX TV News. He said the shootings were unrelated to the parade that drew an estimated 50,000 people to the small Gulf Coast town about 30 miles west of Biloxi. Hendricks said multiple shots were fired, and casings that were found indicated two firearms were used. Authorities were still trying to determine whether there had been one or more assailants, he said. A vehicle containing evidence was impounded, he added. REUTERS

The official death toll from the quake rose to 38, with more than 100 people missing. The girl, named as Lin Su-Chin, was conscious and had been taken to a hospital, Taiwan television stations said. Her aunt, Chen Mei-jih, was rescued shortly after. Earlier, Wang Ting-yu, a legislator who represents the area, told reporters that a woman, identified as Tsao Wei-ling, was found alive, lying under

her dead husband. Their 2-year-old son, who was also killed, was found nearby. Another survivor, a man named Li Tsung-tian, was pulled out later, with Taiwan television stations showing live images of the rescues. Several hours later, Li’s girlfriend was found dead in the rubble. Tsao and Li were both being treated in a hospital. Tainan Mayor William Lai said during a visit to a funeral home that rescue efforts had entered what he called the “third stage.” “There are more fatalities than those pulled out [alive], and the number of fatalities will probably exceed 100,” Lai told reporters. Sales of equipment to grow the plants indoors are booming, bartenders are getting joints as tips and District Council is deliberating whether to license cannabis clubs. Almost a year has passed since it became legal to smoke, but not sell, marijuana in Washington, D.C., and pot enthusiasts and opponents alike are chafing under a compromise that leaves smokers in a haze over how to obtain their weed. Both smokers and police complain that the city’s ban on sales, imposed by congressional conservatives, are leaving residents to bump up against legal limits around the drug. “It is kind of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ of cannabis legalization. It’s like there’s all these rules and regulations that no one follows,” said Alex Jeffrey, executive direc-

tor of DC NORML, a marijuana reform advocacy group. Possession and transfer of small amounts of marijuana became legal in the city of 660,000 people on Feb. 26, 2015, following overwhelming approval in a 2014 referendum. The states of Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska have also made pot lawful for recreational use through referendums, although it remains illegal under federal law. Those states have cleared the way for sales of pot, creating a bustling trade in smokable and edible versions of the drug. Campaigns are under way in a halfdozen other` states, including California and Massachusetts, to place legalization initiatives

on ballots this November. Last year, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and other city leaders limited pot to home cultivation and consumption when Congress, which has oversight over the heavily Democratic city, blocked sales through a rider, or addon, to a spending bill. Before legalization, city finance officials estimated the District marijuana market at $130 million a year. “This limbo that we’re in because of the congressional rider is untenable,” said District Councilmember Brianne Nadeau. “It’s a big problem.” Nadeau and other lawmakers voted unanimously this month to study whether to license private pot clubs. Proponents say the clubs would provide a place to smoke for people living in federal public housing or who do not want to smoke in front of their children. The Washington law has meant a “green rush” of cultivation in basements, bedrooms and closets. The 2015 District of Columbia State Fair even started a “Best Bud” marijuana category. Pot advocates estimate that from 500 to 1,000 people are growing for maximum yield. REUTERS

Joseph Gordon-Levitt snags Man of the Year award, chats ‘Snowden’ The actor talks about his upcoming role as the infamous whistle-blower. MEGAN JOHNSON @megansarahj letters@metro.us

When Joseph GordonLevitt headed to Harvard University last Friday, he knew he’d have to make a fool of himself. But even he didn’t predict giving lap dances, pretending to drink milk from a cow’s udders (well, a student in a cow suit) and dropping his pants onstage. “I had seen some photos, and I knew I might have to dress up,” Gordon-Levitt said that evening at Harvard’s Farkas Hall, where he was honored with the 50th Man of the Year award by

the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the university’s esteemed theatrical troupe. In between jumping around in the audience wearing a spandex Robin costume and performing a spot-on impression of his friend Seth Rogen, Gordon-Levitt spoke earnestly about his own college experience at Columbia University. “I’ve spent the last two days here. I also went to a esteemed college in the Ivy League, and I ended up dropping out. I’ll be really, really honest: I came out of that experience a little bit pessimistic about the people that were in my class. A lot of people that went and studied engineering and learning science, that sort of thing, ended up becoming [investment] bankers and

gambling for a living, breaking the world a few years later,” Gordon-Levitt told the audience. “I really know the difference here. I really noticed a thoughtfulness, optimism, passion, worldliness and a sense of humor that leaves me feeling optimistic about people who are younger than I am. Having just bore a child half a year ago, it makes me feel really good that people who are younger than I am are doing great.” After the onstage portion, Gordon-Levitt also spoke about his role as notorious National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone’s upcoming film, “Snowden.” Joseph said he had spent time with the real Snowden, and respects him.

Director David O. Russell is riding high now, but before “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” he was persona non grata — a difficult hellion whose actors hated him. Indeed, George Clooney loudly complained to anyone who would listen about his unsightly antics while filming this 1999 Desert Storm dramedy.

But like 2004’s “I Heart Huckabees,” it turned out pretty great, despite the difficulty. Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube play soldiers so bored by the lack of action they try to steal some Iraqi gold. Sharp back then, it only seems more insightful now, an eightyear war, untold casualties and trillions of dollars later.

Remember when Jesse Eisenberg wrote a withering New Yorker short story about a venal, horny film critic? Apart from how lazy it was, it seemed inexplicable given he’s an actual critics’ darling. Case in point: his dual role as a mushy-mouthed sad sack and a cocksure extrovert who may be his evil doppelganger. Both extremes of his personality are well-used by actorturned-director Richard Ayoade (Moss from “The IT Crowd”), who sets his tale — loosely based on Dostoevsky’s novella — in a grimy, Gilliam-esque city where all hope is crushed by bureaucracy and dim lighting.

Like his bandmates, Chris Baio knows there’s life outside Vampire Weekend. Since the group’s 2013 record “Modern Vampires of the City,” frontman Ezra Koenig has performed with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O and Chromeo; multiinstrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij took a solo path (and officially split from the group); and Baio dove headfirst into his longtime dance music project with his beat-centric, full-length record, “The Names.” The 31-year-old Bronxville, N.Y., native developed an interest in dance music as a college radio DJ while at Columbia University. “It was a time in my life where I really expanded my musical horizons,” explains the musician. “I got really into the [German

minimal techno label] Kompakt and would play a lot of Kompakt releases.” On “The Names,” Baio (who opts to professionally go by his last name only) toes the line between this experimental music background and the sunny Afropop that defines Vampire Weekend. The record, which Baio describes a journey where anything could happen, came together after moving from New York to London in 2013. “I don’t think I would’ve made a record, honestly, if I hadn’t moved,” says Baio. “When you leave one place and go to another, you get sort of a new life in a new city … You get a new perspective to look back on your life’s previous moments.” Cultural references abound on the record but post-modern author Don DeLillo’s influence is front and center. Baio initially took an interest in the writer after realizing that he and DeLillo grew up in the same suburb of New York City. “He very quickly became my

favorite writer … It was very much my intent to channel [him].” While the record’s production — which packs in both pounding electro crescendos and melancholic vibes — is diverse, Baio explains that he had most trouble with the vocal parts. “You have something you want to say in terms of the actual words, but then how you say it I find is just as important as what you say when you’re singing … That was where the majority of the work came from.” As for Vampire Weekend, Baio is mostly mum. “Stuff will happen when it happens but for now, this record and this tour is what I’m really excited about,” he says. “I haven’t done any work on a new Vamp record.”

This is what a breakup does to your body Plus, what you can do to bounce back. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

emily.laurence@metro.us

Statistically, more couples break up in January than any other month of the year, so unfortunately, either you or someone you know is probably feeling some heartache right now. The outward signs of a newly single person are pretty easy to spot (they’re probably either drunk, sleeping, eating/ refusing food), but what exactly is happening on the inside? Clinical health psychologist Marni Amsellem gives us the facts.

The initial reaction

wellbeing MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY

Assuming this isn’t a breakup you wanted, Amsellem says directly after it happens, cortisol — the stress hormone — is released in the brain, creating a “fight or flight” response. “Your body feels threatened in some way,” she says. Amsellem says people default to whatever it is they typically do in stressful situations, whether it be overeating, not eating at all, climbing into bed or hitting the gym. “It becomes a vicious circle just like anything that we do,” she says. “It gets reinforced in the body by a release of neurotransmitters [brain chemicals that communicate with the body]. If you’ve learned in the past that eating a tub of

ice cream when you get a bad grade makes you feel better, then that’s going to be something you turn to without even really thinking about it during a breakup.”

Your heart literally hurts “Rejection can really hurt someone physically,” Amsellem says. “Some people feel actual chest pain.” While physical pain symptoms after a breakup are real, when it comes to feeling tired all the time, Amsellem says that most likely stems from not wanting to face the world, rather than your body actually craving more sleep.

What happens when you go on a bender Phase one of a breakup usually involves two things: booze and lots of carbs. Amsellem says alcohol isn’t necessarily a bad way to cope, you just have to be more aware of your actions. “Alcohol increases whatever your mood state is,” she says. So, if you’re feeling depressed because of your breakup, it’s safe to say alcohol isn’t going to be your magic pathway to happiness. She also says it’s important to be more aware of your mood. “Drinking [after a breakup] can increase your chances of doing things you might not want to do, whether it’s calling your ex, engaging in risky sexual behaviors or getting into a fight,” she says.

What really works If your default to deal with stress, and therefore breakups, is in unhealthy ways such as eating or drinking too much, Amsellem says this is your chance to turn your breakup into a positive thing by forming some new habits. “Moderate exercise is a good coping method you can develop that will actually help you,” she says. “The adrenaline release and increased heart rate are good things for your body.” Then, when you feel stressed in the

future, your instinct will be to work out, not binge eat or drink. But logging time at the gym isn’t the only way to help your body after a breakup. “There are really robust findings that meditation and mindfulness can affect the way your brain operates [and] releases neurotransmitters,” she says. “You can train your brain to respond so you end up feeling better, which is very cool.” She also says journaling has been found to release neurotransmitters in the brain as well.

Si o no? States debate swapping coding for languages Is JavaScript more global than Spanish, French or Mandarin? Florida high school student Brooke Stewart would gladly swap two required foreign-language classes to become fluent in JavaScript or Python, the coding languages she uses to design computer games. Lawmakers in her state have sparked national debate by considering whether to provide that option. A measure championed by a former Yahoo executive who is now a Florida legislator would allow students to substitute foreign-language studies for immersion in coding, the lingua franca of the technology era.

Enthusiasm for teaching coding is widespread, with President Barack Obama in his latest weekly radio address calling for computer science to join the “three Rs”—reading, writing and arithmetic. But many share concerns about doing so at the expense of global languages, arguing the computer algorithms do not equate to conversations. Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore in Tampa, said rethinking the definition of a language makes sense. “You can translate languages across the Internet through coding, but you can’t do that without coding,” she said. Officials in Kentucky, Georgia, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington

also have floated the notion of substituting foreign languages with computer coding credits. So far, few have adopted such measures. Texas allows such a swap under a policy adopted in 2014 that is approved only through the current school year. State education officials have not tracked how widely it has been used. Oklahoma has permitted similar flexibility for more than a decade, but only because rural schools have struggled to hire instructors to teach global languages, said state officials. Many states are recognizing coding credits within the subject areas of math and science. CODE.org, a leader in

the push for computer science education, favors that approach. “Spanish is used to communicate to one another,” said Cameron Wilson, vice president of government affairs at CODE. org, which has not taken a position on the Florida bill. “A computer language is really only used to communicate to a computer on how to execute codes on a machine.” Comparing them represents a “fundamental misunderstanding,” he said.

The sponsor of the Florida measure, which passed its third committee vote in the state Senate, defends his approach. Democratic state Sen. Jeremy Ring said his bill aims to elevate computer science in Florida, where students mostly take the subject as an elective. “Coding is a language,” said Ring, who got the idea from his 14-year-old son. “It is a global language, more global than French or German or Spanish, or for that matter, even English.”

The Florida House is debating an alternative approach that would have a panel study the issue. “Coding is very sexy and very now,” said Barmak Nassirian, director of federal policy analysis at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, which does not have a position. He cautions against overreaching. “Coding is arguably what welding was 100 years ago,” he said. “Let’s not get carried away.” REUTERS

Is Peyton Manning back in the conversation after winning a second Super Bowl title Sunday over the Panthers? GETTY IMAGES

BURKE: BRADY VS. MANNING ARGUMENT BACK ON DUE TO ‘CHEATING’ PATRIOTS OPINION

MATT BURKE @burke_metro

For the rest of the country, the debate is back on. “Who’s better: Brady or Manning?” In New England, of course, Brady clinched things last year with his fourth Super Bowl ring. And No. 12 still wins the ring count vs. No. 18 with a 4-2 advantage. But we caught a glimpse into the minds of the majority of NFL fans

Sunday night when Brady was roundly booed in his hometown. “Brady has four Super Bowl rings, sure, but none of them were won without a cheating scandal!” That’s what I kept reading over and over on Twitter late Sunday night. Boston fans can come back at the haters with all the facts in the world. Ya know, stuff like: The Boston Herald recanted the story that said the Patriots filmed the Rams walkthrough in 2002. … There are already a million TV cameras and 80,000 people in NFL

stadiums on every single Sunday and if a team wants to record another team’s play signals you can still easily do that. (So, Spygate was mostly bunk.) Chris Mortensen’s initial report that 11 of 12 footballs were 2 pounds under the 12.5 PSI legal limit was flat-out wrong. (So, Deflategate was mostly bunk.) And then there are the facts that after the Spygate story broke, the Patriots rattled off the greatest regular season in the history of pro football. And that after the (continued on page 18)

Deflategate story broke, the Patriots beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. In both cases, all eyes were on the Patriots and they would have been absolutely moronic to “cheat” in any way — given how hot the temperature was during those time periods. Those are the facts. But sports fans have little use for them. New England is guilty of it, too, of course. We can paint broad brushes with the best of ’em. “The 1970s Steelers were all on steroids … Pats dynasty is better.” “Peyton Manning was on steroids … Brady’s better.” “The 2003 Yankees were all on steroids … Sox were better.” Trying to get a Boston sports fan to see the “other

side of things” is as difficult as trying to convince Ted Cruz that, hey, that Bernie Sanders guy might have a point about free college. So, “Brady vs. Manning” is a thing again for the rest of the country, even if Boston doesn’t want to admit it. The ugliest fact for Patriots fans now is that Manning is 3-2 against Brady in the playoffs. Pats fans like to think Brady is the most clutch NFL player of all time and Manning is the epitome of a choke artist, but that stat badly burns that argument. Yup, it’s true that Brady didn’t have enough help in all of the three losses and that in all three losses the Pats were dealing with significant injury issues. But those

facts will surely get lost in history. The Brady-Manning rivalry is often compared to the Magic JohnsonLarry Bird rivalry in the NBA. And today, it’s actually more apt than ever. Unfortunately for Boston sports fans who enjoy symmetry, we have Magic this time around. Brady is the fashionable guy who wears sixfigure suits. Peyton is the guy who — allegedly — drinks Budweiser. Magic won five championships. Bird won three. Brady has won four championships. Peyton has won two. Magic’s career went longer than Bird’s (Magic came back to play for the Lakers five years after he retired due to HIV) as Bird’s body broke down. Brady is set to play until 2025, while Manning is likely done. “Who was better: Magic or Bird?” is still one of the more debated sports arguments. And you can be sure, 25 years from now — “Who was better: Brady or Manning?” will be a topic, whether Boston wants to admit it right now or not.
