Barack Obama will ask Congress for more than $1.8 billion in emergency funds to fight Zika at home and abroad and pursue a vaccine, the White House said on Monday, but the president also said there is no reason to panic over the mosquito-borne virus. North Korea’s latest rocket launch might kick off a buildup of U.S. missile defense systems in Asia, U.S. officials and missile defense experts said, something that could further strain U.S.China ties and also hurt relations between Beijing and Seoul. North Korea says it put a satellite into orbit on Sunday, but the United States and its allies see the launch as cover for Pyongyang’s development of ballistic missile technology that could be used to deliver a nuclear weapon. LeSean McCoy put off-duty Philly The former Eagle was reportedly involved in an altercation early Sunday morning with police officers. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

Reports are emerging that former Philadelphia Eagle LeSean McCoy was involved in a violent altercation with off-duty Philly cops at an Old City nightclub over the weekend. McCoy, now a Buffalo Bill, was with three other men — including former San Diego Charger

Curtis Brinkley, according to the Daily News — when he got into the fracas after their group tried to claim one of four bottles of champagne the three officers had just purchased. “An argument ensued as to the ownership of a bottle of champagne, which led to pushing

and shoving,” police said. All four men attacked one off-duty cop, police said, pushing and knocking him to the ground. “While on the ground he was punched, kicked and stomped about his body and head multiple times by all four suspects,” police said.

Another cop and club security tried to break up the fight before all the men were ejected from the club. The officer who was knocked down and stomped transported himself to the hospital. He sustained a broken nose, broken rib, a laceration to his right eye and a sprained thumb, police said. The second officer who intervened in the fight, along with club security, was hospitalized and received eight stitches over his left eye and is receiving treatment for a possible skull fracture. Police did not identify the officers involved in the fight or the assailants. According to ABC, the fight occurred Sunday at the Recess nightclub around 2:30 a.m. No arrests have been reported. “The suspects are reported to be members

McCoy now a statistic During LeSean McCoy’s six years with the Philadelphia Eagles he did much to endear himself to local fans. Hailing from Harrisburg, McCoy carried himself as a proud Pennsylvania native, making his home in Philly and becoming a workhorse for the Birds on the field. He set the all-time mark for rushing yards with the Eagles back in 2014, and aside from a minor (highly publicized) incident in which he left a very small and insulting tip at a restaurant, McCoy really didn’t do much to lose the trust or admiration of Philly fans. But then Chip Kelly changed everything. McCoy was shipped off to Buffalo (for linebacker Kiko Alonso) and things changed. He never got over the trade and poked and prodded at Kelly, insinuating he was a racist on several occasions. And given the opportunity to walk back his remarks — alleging

that the former Eagles coach favored white players — McCoy refused to take back his words. When the Bills came to Philly last season, the Eagles prevailed after McCoy told the media he had no intention of shaking Kelly’s hand. He also refused to talk to the media after Buffalo lost the game. In Old City on Sunday night, McCoy became another statistic. A part of the sadly numerous mass of NFL players who can’t control their tempers and who make headlines off the field. Still in the investigation stage, the evidence suggests that McCoy and some friends brutally beat two of three undercover police officers. It seems that even after departing the city he never wanted to leave, McCoy insists on being a part of the Philadelphia news cycle. Bills fans and McCoy fans alike can only hope the controversy does not cost the running back his career. EVAN MACY

being ejected from the club, but did not capture the fight itself. The Bills released a

more information.” They declined to make any further comments.

Looking back at Chip Kelly’s decision to trade McCoy Chip Kelly seemed like a dictator when he was calling the shots in South Philly. He acted like he knew what was best and did not care about anyone else’s opinion. As a coach, he failed to adapt to evolving defenses and eventually he failed and was fired. But as a GM, maybe he wasn’t as clueless as he seems. Kelly cut loose numerous players, made questionable draft decisions and — among a bevy of other moves — traded Nick Foles and a second round pick for Sam Bradford. The value of his time as a GM will be evaluated constantly as he continues his coaching career in San Francisco. But Kelly emphasized character, and culture above scheme. It is impossible to ignore, then, the fact that one of his shipped-off players could be in trouble with the law.

He jettisoned DeSean Jackson after his first season in Philly much to the chagrin of Birds’ fans. There were allegations, that have not been proven, that Jackson had gang ties. He also, in an equally shocking move, traded LeSean McCoy to the Bills for Kiko Alonso last season. McCoy was allegedly involved in an altercation Sunday that injured undercover cops. Was McCoy a ticking time bomb that Kelly was concerned about exploding? Or did the coach really, truly want to move McCoy to pick up a linebacker and to free cap space to sign DeMarco Murray (who Kelly barely used)? Looking at the numbers, McCoy struggled to stay healthy but outperformed Murray on the

field when he was able to play. Clearly Shady was a better fit for the Kelly system than Murray. But yet, Kelly made the decision to take the former Cowboy over the Eagles’ all time leading rusher. On Twitter, the pro and anti-Kelly (and McCoy) factions have been vocal all day long, with some even suggesting Kelly is happy with the arrest — as it affirms his decision. The thin line of racism is again at play, just as it was when Kelly was accused (by McCoy) of favoring white players and not being able to really mesh with his black ones. Even if McCoy is found to be innocent, or not to have been involved there will continue to be chirping about the former Eagles head coach and his decisions in past seasons. From a football perspective, they really did not make sense. But from a character standpoint ... stay tuned. EVAN MACY

Cops hunt for men who wrote swastika on car The snow may have melted away, but authorities are still hunting for three men who are believed to have been involved in writing hateful messages in the snow on a car near Temple University’s campus. The three “persons of interest” are pictured in an image released by Temple University police over the weekend after a student spotted a swastika and a racial slur written in the snow on a car on the 2100 block of North Carlisle Street, around 9:45 a.m. Friday. “F--- no. tf is this?? The Philadelphia Police Department is also investigating the incident after the student sent a photo of the car to authorities. The three men were spotted on surveillance cameras and appear to be in their mid 20s. It is unclear if they are Temple students or if video shows the men writing the messages. Kathryn Knott gets time in Center City gay bashing case Victim tells court she “left me in that alleyway to die.” JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

A punishment that shocked a courtroom — Center City gay basher Kathryn Knott yesterday was sentenced to five to 10 months in prison. Knott and her friends left a man bloodied and near dead in the street on Sept. 11, 2014. In December, a Philadelphia jury found the Bucks County 25-year old guilty of simple assault and conspiracy to commit simple assault against two gay men who were getting pizza after a night out in Midtown Village. In October, two co-conspirators were sentenced to probation as part of a negotiated plea deal.

Kathryn Knott and Prosecutor Michael Barry PROVIDED; CHARLES MOSTOLLER

Before Common Pleas Judge Roxanne Covington made her decision, Knott addressed the court, as well as her two victims — Zachary Hesse and Andrew Haught —who sat front row for the sentencing. “I am so sorry for what happened to you both,” a tearful Knott said as she turned and faced her victims. “You did not deserve what happened to you.” Assistant District At-

torney Michael Barry said after court that the victims “just wanted it to go away, so long as people admitted their guilt. They’re very forgiving people.” Defense attorney Lou Busico offered up character letters and several family members came to support Knott prior to sentencing. He asked the judge to impose probation rather than jail time. After the attack, the

more severely beaten of the two, Haught, had to have his jaw wired shut for eight weeks. He now has a scar that runs down the center of his face. Haught spoke as a witness before sentencing Monday. “I was a man left lying in a pool of his own blood — not once checked on to see if I was still alive,” he said, everyone in the courtroom seemingly hanging on his every word. “I can eat solid foods again. That group, including Kathryn Knott, left me in that alleyway to die.” In total, Knott was sentenced to five to 10 months, two years’ probation, a $2,000 fine, ordered to undergo anger management rehabilitative classes, she’s banned from Philadelphia, and given a stay-away order from her victims and their families.

Super Bowl ad hits and misses It wasn’t a “groundbreaking year for Super Bowl commercials, according to a local veteran ad expert. JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

The day after the Super Bowl, people might find themselves at work, congregating around the water cooler and rehashing the big game’s best commercials. Which ones made you laugh, cry or want to puke? Steve Merino is executive creative director at ab+c, one of the region’s largest ad agencies, serving Philadelphia, Bloomsburg and Wilmington, Delaware. He’s spent the last decade studying what ads turn out to be viral successes and which ads flop. And over the years, he’s spotted a few trends.

Philadelphia native Kevin Hart starred in Hyundai’s “First Date Super Bowl ad. YOUTUBE

“Usually, Super Bowl ads are reflections of the national sentiment at the time. Merino

Merino said one commercial that stood out was Mountain Dew’s “pup-

pymonkeybaby, which depicted a hybrid creature one-third puppy, one-third monkey, one-third baby. “It was a very strange, odd commercial. Everyone’s talking about how much they hated it. Is there bad publicity? Only time will tell if you can see if there’s any sales increase, he said. A Hyundai commercial featured Philly’s own Kevin Hart, who lends his brand-new 2016 Hyundai Genesis to his daughter’s date for the night. The car

is equipped with a Blue Link Car Finder, so that Hart can track his daughter’s whereabouts. Hart put his daughter’s date night through hell. “It made you think about labels, said Merino, “and Audi did an awesome job making you think about performance, too. The best job was definitely in the car category. Now, for a football staple — beer. Merino said he noticed something different in the suds department this year.

“2016 was the first year in over a decade where there was no commercial centered around the Budweiser Clydesdales,â€? he said. “They may be rethinking their Super Bowl marketing strategy.â€? Merino chalked it up to perhaps a growing popularity of alternative craft brews and microbrews. But a spokeswoman for Anheuser-Busch said that maybe those who think that have had a few too many. “Anheuser-Busch had five ads in the Super Bowl [Sunday] night — one for Bud Light, two for Budweiser, one for Michelob Ultra and one for Shock Top,â€? Bud spokeswoman Jen Crichton wrote in an email to Metro. As for the Clydesdales, Budweiser VP Brian Perkins has said, “There have never been any plans to remove our beloved Budweiser Clydesdales from our brand identity.â€?

Weather Philly prepares for another snow dump City oďŹƒcials took early steps to ramp up preparations for the snowfall that was expected to last into Tuesday. “This may not be on the scale of last month’s blizzard, but we are treating this as a full-scale event,â€? Clarena Tolson, deputy managing director for infrastructure and transportation, said in a statement. â€œWe want to make sure we’re out there ahead of the storm.â€? A winter storm warning will be in eect until Wednesday. Forecasters were projecting 3 to 6 inches of snow. Streets Department vehicles plowing and salting streets were ordered to be deployed at midnight, Mayor Jim Kenney’s oďŹƒce announced. Those vehicles will be on the street all day Tuesday as snow is expected to continue falling over the region. Trash pickup on Tuesday has been canceled. No snow emergency declaration was planned as of Monday evening. The city also reiterated that residents are required to shovel a path 3 feet wide in front of their property within six hours of a snowstorm ending. SAM NEWHOUSE

Winter storm pounds southern New England, snarling travel Amanda Eggert and Jason Robert Roth

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT HANDOUT

Couple, too drunk to drive, give keys to 9-year-old A Wisconsin couple allowed their 9-year-old daughter to drive them and their 11-monthold baby because they were too drunk to do so themselves, according to Polk County Circuit Court records. Jason Roth, 36, and Amanda Eggert, 32, pleaded not guilty at the court on Friday to charges of recklessly endangering safety and neglecting a child, according to online records. On Jan. 31, a sheriff’s deputy responded to a call about an erratic driver and found the couple and their children parked at a boat drop in Polk County,

about 75 miles northeast of Minneapolis, according to a criminal complaint. The deputy arrested the couple when he learned that their 9-yearold daughter was driving them and their baby home in their pickup truck because they were both intoxicated, according to the complaint from the county prosecutor’s office. Eggert also faces several charges stemming from a fight she had with paramedics who arrived to help her with a cut on her hand suffered when she was snowmobiling earlier in the day, court records showed. REUTERS

Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour were expected in parts of coastal southeastern Massachusetts, raising the risk of downed trees and power outages, officials said. A winter storm was expected to bring more than a foot of snow and howling winds to parts of southern New England on Monday, closing schools and government offices, snarling travel and flooding low-lying coastal areas. Snow was falling in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire on Monday, with police and elected officials urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Numerous highway crashes were reported

throughout the region, including in Connecticut where a chartered bus headed to a casino rolled over on a busy interstate highway. Nineteen passengers, three of whom were critically injured, were transported to YaleNew Haven Hospital for treatment, the hospital said. “We urge all those who must travel to use added caution, allow extra time to travel, and reduce speeds as conditions warrant,” said Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy. Travel was expected to remain difficult through the evening, officials said. “The heavy snow that’s going to fall in southeastern Massachusetts, especially combined with those heavy winds, 50 to 60 miles per hour, raises some very significant hazards,” Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told reporters.

Officials released photos showing water flowing onto streets in the communities of Hull and Scituate, south of Boston, and police through the region warned that coastal roads had been closed to prevent cars from being damaged or washed away by the heavy surf. Winter storm warnings were in effect from

New York through coastal Maine and officials in Philadelphia and New York said they would be sending police out to encourage homeless people sleeping outdoors to come in to city shelters. Almost a year has passed since it became legal to smoke, but not sell, marijuana in Washington, D.C., and pot enthusiasts and opponents alike are chafing under a compromise that leaves smokers in a haze over how to obtain their weed. Both smokers and police complain that the city’s ban on sales, imposed by congressional conservatives, are leaving residents to bump up against legal limits around the drug. “It is kind of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ of cannabis legalization. It’s like there’s all these rules and regulations that no one follows,” said Alex Jeffrey, executive director of DC NORML, a marijuana reform advocacy group. Possession and transfer of small amounts of marijuana became legal in the city of 660,000 people on Feb. 26, 2015, following overwhelming approval in a 2014 referendum. The states of Colorado, Washington, Oregon and

Alaska have also made pot lawful for recreational use through referendums, although it remains illegal under federal law. Those states have cleared the way for sales of pot, creating a bustling trade in smokable and edible versions of the drug. Campaigns are under way in a half-dozen other` states, including California and Massachusetts, to place legalization initiatives on ballots this November. Last year, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and other city leaders limited pot to home cultivation and consumption when Congress, which has oversight over the heavily Democratic city, blocked sales through a rider, or add-on, to a spending bill. Before legalization, city finance officials estimated the District marijuana

market at $130 million a year. “This limbo that we’re in because of the congressional rider is untenable,” said District Councilmember Brianne Nadeau. “It’s a big problem.” Nadeau and other lawmakers voted unanimously this month to study whether to license private pot clubs. Proponents say the clubs would provide a place to smoke for people living in federal public housing or who do not want to smoke in front of their children. The Washington law has meant a “green rush” of cultivation in basements, bedrooms and closets. The 2015 District of Columbia State Fair even started a “Best Bud” marijuana category. Pot advocates estimate that from 500 to 1,000 people are growing for maximum yield. REUTERS

BRIEF Woman who accused Bill Clinton of assault to campaign against Hillary presidential run One of the women who has accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual assault says she has agreed to work for an anti-Clinton political group being formed by a former advisor to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Kathleen Willey, a former White House volunteer who says Bill Clinton groped her in an Oval Office hallway in 1993 when she came to him tearfully seeking a paid job, said she had agreed to become a paid

national spokeswoman for a group being created by Roger Stone. Stone, a Republican strategist, said the group would become active should Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton’s wife, win the Democratic nomination in the 2016 race for the White House. Clinton is currently the front-runner. “This gives me more of an opportunity to get this message out to young voters who weren’t even born or don’t even remember what happened and to the women who have suffered,” Willey told Reuters. Willey said she will give

interviews and speeches and appear in political advertisements to ensure the accusations remain part of the political discourse during the election campaign. “They’re going to be confronted every day, on radio, on television, on billboards,” Stone told Reuters, referring to the Clintons. He said he had reached a verbal agreement with Willey but cautioned that the group was still in the planning stages. Spokespeople for Hillary and Bill Clinton did not respond to questions about Willey. REUTERS

More rescued two days after Taiwan earthquake; toll could exceed 100 Rescuers pulled out alive an 8-year-old girl and her aunt from the rubble of a Taiwan apartment block Monday, more than 60 hours after it was toppled by a quake, as the mayor of the southern city of Tainan warned the death toll could exceed 100. The official death toll from the quake rose to 38, with more than 100 people missing. The girl, named as Lin Su-Chin, was conscious and had been taken to a hospital, Taiwan television stations said. Her aunt, Chen Mei-jih, was rescued shortly after. The quake struck at about 4 a.m. on Saturday (3 p.m. EST Friday) at the beginning of the Lunar New Year holiday, with almost all the dead found in Tainan’s toppled Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building.

Rescue efforts are focused on the wreckage of the 17-story building, where more than 100 people are listed as missing and are suspected to be buried deep under the rubble. Earlier, Wang Tingyu, a legislator who represents the area, told

reporters that a woman, identified as Tsao Weiling, was found alive, lying under her dead husband. Their 2-yearold son, who was also killed, was found nearby. Another survivor, a man named Li Tsungtian, was pulled out later, with Taiwan televi-

BRIEF Two shot dead, four wounded after Mississippi Mardi Gras parade Authorities on Monday investigated a shooting in which two people were killed and four others wounded after a Mardi Gras parade in a Mississippi Gulf Coast town, police said. OďŹƒcers directing traďŹƒc heard shots ďŹ red shortly after the parade ended Sunday, Pass Christian Police Chief Timothy Hendricks said at a news conference Monday. Two men died at the scene, he said, and four others were wounded and treated at a hospital. Two of the wounded were in stable condition Monday afternoon and two others were released, Hendricks said. There were no immediate arrests. Hendricks said he did not consider the incident an act of terrorism, or being racially motivated. “It’s a horrible act,â€? he said during a news conference webcast by WLOX TV News. He said the shootings were unrelated to the parade that drew an estimated 50,000 people to the small Gulf Coast town about 30 miles west of Biloxi. REUTERS

Scientists investigate possible meteorite death Indian scientists are investigating whether a man was killed by a meteorite, which if confirmed would be the first recorded death from falling fragments of space rock in almost 200 years. Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, has said a bus driver at a college in her state was killed by the meteorite and awarded 100,000 rupees ($1,470) in compensation to his family. “A meteorite fell within the college premises,” Jayalalithaa said. The man “sustained serious injuries and died while on the way to the hospital.” Jayalalithaa, a former film star, left tight-lipped local officials struggling to explain the mystery blast at the engineering college that left a small crater and broke windows. The bus driver was standing on a patch of

grass near the college cafeteria when he was killed, while two gardeners and a student were injured, officials said. A dark blue stone resembling a diamond was found at the scene. Government officials at first suspected the blast was caused by explosives accidentally left after building work. However, investigations found no

evidence of explosive material at the site. “When no evidence of explosive material was found, we moved to the theory that it might be a meteorite,” said a district official who asked not be named. “It is not confirmed yet as samples need to be analyzed.” A team from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics was expected to visit Tuesday to collect samples. G. Baskar, the principal of the college in Vellore district, was working in his cabin when he heard an explosion. “It was a sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before,” he said. “There was no smell at all, no fire, nothing.” The last reported death from a meteorite strike was in 1825, according to a list kept by International Comet Quarterly, a scientific journal. Emma Watson has a new ‘normal’ man

Katy Perry gets along with Orlando Bloom’s kid Looking for verification that Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s new rumored romance is of the serious variety? Well, look no further. How does “quality time with his 5-year-old son strike you as an emotional investment? Perry recently joined Bloom and son Flynn for an afternoon birthday party for Robert Downey Jr.’s son Exton in Malibu. “She looked very comfortable with Flynn, and they were both smiling and happy, a source tells E! News. “Flynn was having a great time and didn’t want to leave the party. They stayed for several hours before they all headed back to Orlando’s. On an only slightly related note, can you imagine how awesome

your birthday parties would be if your dad was Iron Man? But anyway: One other source, at least, still isn’t convinced about the budding romance, insisting that and time spent together for Perry and Bloom is strictly

platonic. It’s also worth noting, though, that this source also insists that Perry and John Mayer “are still very much together, so maybe it’s just a delusional Mayer trying to change the narrative while staying off-the-record.

Chris Baio ventures forward with ‘The Names’ Vampire Weekend’s bassist follows his own beat. CHRIS LEO PALERMINO @indiecalp letters@metro.us

Like his bandmates, Chris Baio knows there’s life outside Vampire Weekend. Since the group’s 2013 record “Modern Vampires of the City,” frontman Ezra Koenig has performed with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O and Chromeo; multiinstrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij took a solo path (and officially split from the group); and Baio dove headfirst into his longtime dance music project with his beat-centric, full-length record, “The Names.” The 31-year-old Bronxville, N.Y., native developed an interest in dance music as a college radio DJ while at Colum-

bia University. “It was a time in my life where I really expanded my musical horizons,” explains the musician. “I got really into the [German minimal techno label] Kompakt and would play a lot of Kompakt releases.” On “The Names,” Baio (who opts to professionally go by his last name only) toes the line between this experimental music background and the sunny Afropop that defines Vampire Weekend. The record, which Baio describes a journey where anything could happen, came together after moving from New York to London in 2013. “I don’t think I would’ve made a record, honestly, if I hadn’t moved,” says Baio. “When you leave one place and go to another, you get sort of a new life in a new city … You get a new perspective to look back on your life’s

previous moments.” Cultural references abound on the record but post-modern author Don DeLillo’s influence is front and center. Baio initially took an interest in the writer after realizing that he and DeLillo grew up in the same suburb of New York City. “He very quickly became my favorite writer … It was very much my intent to channel [him].” While the record’s production — which packs in both pounding electro crescendos and melancholic vibes — is

diverse, Baio explains that he had most trouble with the vocal parts. “You have something you want to say in terms of the actual words, but then how you say it I

find is just as important as what you say when you’re singing… That was where the majority of the work came from.” As for Vampire Weekend, Baio is mostly mum.

“Stuff will happen when it happens but for now, this record and this tour is what I’m really excited about,” he says. “I haven’t done any work on a new Vamp record.”

Jesse Eisenbergs stars (twice!) in “The Double. MAGNOLIA PICTURES

Remember when Jesse Eisenberg wrote a withering New Yorker short story about a venal, horny ďŹ lm critic? Apart from how lazy it was, it seemed inexplicable given he’s an actual critics’ darling. Case in point: his dual role as a mushy-mouthed sad sack and a cocksure extrovert who may be his evil doppelganger. Both extremes of his personality are well-used by actorturned-director Richard Ayoade (Moss from “The IT Crowdâ€?), who sets his tale — loosely based on Dostoevsky’s novella — in a grimy, Gilliam-esque city where all hope is crushed by bureaucracy and dim lighting.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube try to busy themselves during the Gulf War in David O. Russell’s “Three Kings. WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Director David O. Russell is riding high now, but before “Silver Linings Playbookâ€? and “American Hustleâ€? he was persona non grata — a diďŹƒcult hellion whose actors hated him. Indeed, George Clooney loudly complained to anyone who would listen about his unsightly antics while ďŹ lming this 1999 Desert Storm dramedy.

But like 2004’s “I Heart Huckabees,â€? it turned out pretty great, despite the diďŹƒculty. Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube play soldiers so bored by the lack of action they try to steal some Iraqi gold. Sharp back then, it only seems more insightful now, an eight-year war, untold casualties and trillions of dollars later.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt says Edward Snowden is ‘an optimist’ The actor talks about his upcoming role as the infamous whistle-blower. MEGAN JOHNSON @megansarahj letters@metro.us

When Joseph GordonLevitt headed to Harvard University last Friday, he knew he’d have to make a fool of himself. But even he didn’t predict giving lap dances, pretending to drink milk from a cow’s udders (well, a student in a cow suit) and dropping his pants onstage. “I had seen some photos, and I knew I might have to dress up, GordonLevitt said that evening at Harvard’s Farkas Hall, where he was honored with the 50th Man of the Year award by the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the university’s esteemed theatrical troupe. In between jumping around in the audience wearing a spandex Robin costume and performing a spot-on impression of his friend Seth Rogen, Gordon-Levitt spoke earnestly about his own college experience at Columbia University. “I’ve spent the last two days here. I also went to a esteemed college in the

Ivy League, and I ended up dropping out. I’ll be really, really honest: I came out of that experience a little bit pessimistic about the people that were in my class. A lot of people that went and studied engineering and learning science, that sort of thing, ended up becoming [investment] bankers and gambling for a living, breaking the world a few years later, Gordon-Levitt

told the audience. “I really know the difference here. I really noticed a thoughtfulness, optimism, passion, worldliness and a sense of humor that leaves me feeling optimistic about people who are younger than I am. Having just bore a child half a year ago, it makes me feel really good that people who are younger than I am are doing great. After the onstage portion, Gordon-Levitt also spoke about his role as notorious National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone’s upcoming film, “Snowden. Joseph said he had spent time with the real Snowden, and respects him.

“We sat and talked for four hours,â€? he said. “We had a really great conversation. I’ve spoken with him a couple times since shooting the movie. Speaking of optimism, that guy is an optimist. He is really dedicated to trying to make our country and our world better for everyone. I personally really believe that’s what he’s dedicated to doing.â€? But it certainly wasn’t all serious talk for the actor. Earlier on Friday, Gordon-Levitt spent a lot of time with the Harvard undergrads, frolicking through Harvard Square wearing a hat made of blue balloons, receiving a key to the city and hanging at the Hasty Pudding Clubhouse.Â

This is what a breakup does to your body Plus, what you can do to bounce back. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

emily.laurence@metro.us

Statistically, more couples break up in January than any other month of the year, so unfortunately, either you or someone you know is probably feeling some heartache right now. The outward signs of a newly single person are pretty easy to spot (they’re probably either drunk, sleeping, eating/ refusing food), but what exactly is happening on the inside? Clinical health psychologist Marni Amsellem gives us the facts.

The initial reaction Assuming this isn’t a breakup you wanted, Amsellem says directly after it happens, cortisol — the stress hormone — is released in the brain, creating a “fight or flight” response. “Your body feels threatened in some way,” she says. Amsellem says people

default to whatever it is they typically do in stressful situations, whether it be overeating, not eating at all, climbing into bed or hitting the gym. “It becomes a vicious circle just like anything that we do,” she says. “It gets reinforced in the body by a release of neurotransmitters [brain chemicals that communicate with the body]. If you’ve learned in the past that eating a tub of ice cream when you get a bad grade makes you feel better, then that’s going to be something you turn to without even really thinking about it during a breakup.”

Your heart literally hurts “Rejection can really hurt someone physically,” Amsellem says. “Some people feel actual chest pain.” While physical pain symptoms after a breakup are real, when it comes to feeling tired all the time, Amsellem says that most likely stems from not wanting to face the world, rather than your

body actually craving more sleep.

What happens when you go on a bender Phase one of a breakup usually involves two things: booze and lots of carbs. Amsellem says alcohol isn’t necessarily a bad way to cope, you just have to be more aware of your actions. “Alcohol increases whatever your mood state is,” she says. So, if you’re feeling depressed because of your breakup, it’s safe to say alcohol isn’t going to be your magic pathway to happiness. She also says it’s important to be more aware of your mood. “Drinking [after a breakup] can increase your chances of doing things you might not want to do, whether it’s calling your ex, engaging in risky sexual behaviors or getting into a fight,” she says.

What really works If your default to deal with stress, and therefore breakups, is in unhealthy ways such

MAKE HEALTHY YOUR NEW HAPPY as eating or drinking too much, Amsellem says this is your chance to turn your breakup into a positive thing by forming some new habits. “Moderate exercise is a good coping method you can develop that will actually help you,” she says. “The adrenaline release and increased

heart rate are good things for your body.” Then, when you feel stressed in the future, your instinct will be to work out, not binge eat or drink. But logging time at the gym isn’t the only way to help your body after a breakup. “There are really robust findings that medita-

tion and mindfulness can affect the way your brain operates [and] releases neurotransmitters,” she says. “You can train your brain to respond so you end up feeling better, which is very cool.” She also says journaling has been found to release neurotransmitters in the brain as well.

Brooke Burke-Charvet’s tips for keeping the whole family healthy Plus, how women can feel more comfortable with their bodies. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

emily.laurence@metro.us

As the CEO of lifestyle site ModernMom and Booty Burn fitness class instructor, Brooke BurkeCharvet’s life is crazy busy. Besides her various paying gigs, she’s also a mom of four. We caught up with Burke-Charvet to get her tips on keeping the whole family healthy.

“I take my kids with me when I teach a workout class. It gives them a place to stretch and join in if they want to. I especially encourage my teenagers [Neriah, 15, and Sierra, 13] to participate.”

“I shop and cook with my kids so they really understand fresh food. For my younger kids, [Shaya, 8, and Heaven, 9], I try to teach them about eating the colors of the rainbow as an easy way for them to un-

Feeling confident:

Keep healthy on-the-go snacks handy

As if she didn’t have enough on her plate, the actress and former “Dancing With the Stars” host has just signed on as a spokeswoman for Poise, educating women about light bladder leakage (LBL), something she says one in three women experience. “It’s not a common lunch topic, but it’s extremely common, and what really blows me away is that [many] women aren’t using the right products or are using no products at all,” she tells us. You might remember that Kris Jenner also partnered with Poise to bring awareness to LBL. “It’s a big decision for a celebrity to get onboard with a big campaign like this, but for me, it was because I really believe in the importance of women feeling comfortable with their bodies and starting this conversation.”

“I try to keep packaged food limited, but we’re a busy family so nothing is ever totally off-limits — it’s all in moderation. But being able to buy healthy snacks to have and carry is key.”

5

Take time for yourself

“Carving out time in the morning to work out after I drop the kids off at school is mandatory for me, not just for my body but for my sanity. I schedule my workouts.”

Eagles move on, cut ties with Cooper After six years, the Eagles and Doug Pederson are cutting the cord with the controversial wide receiver. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

The Eagles are gearing up for a big move. Why? Well, they cut Riley Cooper Monday, clearing up $2.9 million in valuable cap space. This is cash they’ll need to extend stud defensive end Fletcher Cox, or to sign quarterback Sam Bradford. Cooper was pretty irrelevant last season for the Eagles, catching just 21 passes for 327 yards. According to ESPN, the wideout was targeted on 6.4 percent of the routes he

ran last season. This is the third-lowest in football of qualifying players. He was drafted by Andy Reid in 2010 and over six season with the Birds caught 169 balls for 2,418 yards and 18 touchdowns. His best season was in 2013, prior to signing a contract extension with the club he had 47 catches for 835 yards and eight scores as the Eagles won the NFC East. The Eagles have an abundance of young talent at the receiver position in Jordan Matthews, Josh Huff and Nelson Agholor and the move was widely expected. A big-bodied receiver, Cooper will likely be most remembered for using a racial slur at a country music concert that was caught on film a few seasons ago.

The Eagles need all the cap room they can muster this offseason. GETTY IMAGES

“Walk in and drive out.

In all the years of storied history of basketball at Villanova, the school has never boasted a No. 1 team. That changed Monday, when the AP and USA Today each ranked the Wildcats the top team in the country. Nova improved to 20-3 on the country after a win over Providence last week, and are now proudly adorning a big target on their backs as the regular season continues. “We’re honored and humbled to have been voted No. 1 by the writers in the Associated Press poll and the coaches in the USA Today coaches’ poll,” head coach Jay Wright said. “There’s still a lot of basketball left to be played and handling this will be another challenge for our team. We look forward to it.” In USA Today’s coaches’ poll it was a close decision, with the Wildcats beating out

Maryland by just four votes, 753-749. In the AP poll, Villanova received 32 of 65 first-place votes. Last season, despite being a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the squad was upset in the second round. The team has eight games left prior to the Big East Tournament. Villanova is in Chicago Tuesday to face DePaul and back home Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center when they host St. John’s. EVAN MACY

THE NEXT CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM The oldest question in sports-talk radio – at least in this town – is, “Which team wins the next title?” Indeed, there have been times when I’ve believed in each of our four pro franchises. In case you lost count, Denver’s win in Super Bowl 50 Sunday night marks 29 Philadelphia sports seasons since the Phillies won the 2008 World Series. And that glorious championship stands alone among the last 128 combined seasons of the Phils, Eagles, Flyers and Sixers. You can be 40 years old in this city and remember only one champagne-soaked locker room. But enough basking in the misery. Let’s move forward. Who pulls us out of this slog through hell? Which team ends the Kafkaesque nightmare? The toughest franchise to make the case for now is the Eagles. Yes, the Panthers showed how a team can start a season at 3-8-1 and reach the Super Bowl

GLEN MACNOW OPINION Glen Macnow has been an outspoken voice in Philly sports for nearly three decades. @realglenmacnow

the very next year, but Carolina has Cam Newton at QB and the Eagles have . . . who knows? I’m also wary of the current front office consisting of Howie Roseman, rookie head coach Doug Pederson and lots of vacant offices. So the Eagles are out.

Sixers die-hards continue to believe in “The Process.” But a team now in its fifth straight year of declining victories isn’t going to turn the corner at 90 mph. The Flyers? General manager Ron Hextall is pushing them in a new, exciting direction. Goalie Steve Mason, however, has never won a playoff round in his eightyear career. How can I predict him to win four in one spring? Which leaves us with the team that lost more games last season (99) than any team in the majors. Yes, it says here that the Phils stand the best chance to host our next parade. It just won’t roll down Broad Street anytime soon. Last week, MLB. com placed seven Phillies among baseball’s top 100 prospects – more than any other team. Shortstop J.P. Crawford – the can’t-miss 21-year-old – ranked fifth. He could be up later this season. Three prospects

obtained for Cole Hamels also landed on the list. That doesn’t include Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff, who could both earn their way to the top of the rotation. It doesn’t include

Odubel Herrera and the speedy, young Phillies lineup could be fun to watch if they become contenders.

Maikel Franco, who’s got 30 home runs, 100 RBI and Gold Glove potential. And it doesn’t include Odubel Herrera, who hit .297 as a Rule 5 rookie last season, while learning centerfield on the fly. When these kids are ready, ownership will have the money and impetus to supplement the core with free-agent signings. Hey, I know that prospect failure rates in baseball approach 50 percent. Any of these guys could turn into the next Domonic Brown. But in a city where no team made the playoffs last year and none will likely do so this year, the next generation of Phillies represents hope. And hope is all that we have right now. Pitchers and catchers report Feb. 17. It’s the beginning – and not just for this year.
