More than 60 people were killed by a twin suicide bomb attack at a camp in northern Nigeria for people displaced by an insurgency of the jihadist Boko Haram group, a military and emergency official said on Wednesday. The attack took place some 50 miles outside the capital of Borno state, center of the seven-year insurgency, they said. It took place on Tuesday, but a breakdown in the telephone system had prevented the information being made public earlier. REUTERS

Twitter made a dramatic product change on Wednesday, saying it will recast the way it displays tweets on its homepage by customizing them to individual users, instead of uniformly displaying tweets in reverse chronological order. The change to the timeline — as the homepage is known — is also designed to appeal to advertisers by giving more prominence to tweets that advertisers pay for to promote products. REUTERS

Police have now charged two 18-year-old men and three minors captured on surveillance cameras destroying several public Salem ice sculptures. The ice sculptures were created in conjunction with the annual Salem So Sweet Chocolate and Wine Festival, WHDH reported. One of the destroyed sculptures was a 3-foot alpaca. Salem Police Lt. Conrad Prosniewski said the vandals were easy to spot because one teen was carrying the alpaca’s head, Salem News reported. JASON NUCKOLLS

Hot dogs will hit the permanent menu at Burger King restaurants in the United States this month, in one of the chain’s biggest menu updates in years. Burger King is going back to its fast-food roots with the new menu item after its salads and healthier offerings struggled to tempt diners. The burger chain had Twitter sizzling after its announcement, but at least some did not relish the idea. “Not that I ever go to BK anyway but wow that sounds like a precarious idea, eating that,” wrote Brendan (@BrendanTweets). Three people were killed in two separate overnight car crashes in Quincy and Saugus. Around 1:30 a.m. in Quincy, a Mercedes crashed into a tree and caught fire on Route 28, WCVB reported. The driver and a front-seat passenger were trapped and suffered fatal injuries, but authorities managed to take the backseat passenger to Boston Medical Center. In a separate incident at approximately 4:30 a.m., a Volvo station wagon flipped onto its roof in the northbound lanes of Route 1 in Saugus, killing one, CBS has reported. JASON NUCKOLLS

Dunkin’ Donuts franchises in New York City and New Jersey are the target of a recently filed lawsuit alleging that non-taxable items are being taxed at the expense of Dunkin’ customers. A Fort Lee, New Jersey, couple became the plaintiff in the suit when they said they were overcharged at Dunkin’ Donuts, which was told of the error but failed to correct it, Newsday reported. “The unlawful surcharge is disguised as a ‘sales tax’ on the customer’s receipt, according to the lawsuit, filed by lawyers Carl J. Mayer and Ted M. Rosenberg, NorthJersey .com stated. The suit claimed that taxes were added to purchases of bottled water and packaged coffee, which are not taxable. Mayer estimated that the chain could have made as much as $10 million off New York customers for falsely

The Canton-based chain said it is inquiring from its franchisees if customers were charged undue taxes, according to Newsday. There are approximately 1,000 Dunkin’ Donuts in New York and New Jersey. Is CPA tax surcharge right for Bostonians? Sure, Bostonians may be concerned about affordable housing, but is Boston willing to pay an extra 1 percent on their property tax bills? At least two city councilors believe so. Councilors Michael Flaherty, at-large, and Andrea Campbell, representing Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain, on Tuesday filed a measure that could put that question to voters in the city in November. Their move is set to rekindle debate on whether adopting the Community Preservation Act is right for the city. The CPA earmarks the extra cash collected for affordable housing, as well as green space, for historic preservation. Campbell told Metro the average extra fee per year at $23 per one-family home — those costs could be passed

down from landlords to renters. The CPA allows cities and towns to add exemptions, for example, excluding the first $100,000 in a home’s value from the surcharge and excluding seniors and low-income residents. The CPA proposal has been sent to committee, she said. The council plans to schedule a hearing in the coming months, and an information campaign is expected soon. Joe Krieberg of the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations said the benefits are worth the cost. He estimates the program would bring $13 million from the surcharge, $4 million in matching funds from the state and millions more if the city decides to also invest tax dollars into it. Many real estate groups and tax-hike opponents are against the measure, while tenant advocacy groups support the idea, saying the city needs more affordable housing. It would need city council approval before appearing on the ballot. Mayor Marty Walsh hasn’t taken a position on it. SPENCER BUELL

posed at the top of the board. For example, “More essential Boston winter gear? Hats or

hashtags #NeatStreets or #NeatStreetsBos, through March. “Boston is a beautiful city, but to keep it that way we must all do our part to keep our streets clean,” Walsh said in a press release. “This smart and innovative effort incorporates a public polling process to engage our residents and visitors in protecting our environment.” The initiative is modeled after a similar program in London, Walsh said. Photographer seeks Danny Goldfield is searching for one man and one woman over 100 in Massachusetts. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
A little over a year ago, photographer Danny Goldfield left his apartment in Brooklyn, hopped in a van and set out on a journey around the country. His mission: meet 100 people in the U.S. who are more than 100 years old — one man and one woman in each of the 50 states — and take snapshots of lives a century in the making. “I have this sensation that if I do a good enough job and capture the spirit of these people, you may get an idea of what it’s like to live 10,000 years. That’s how I think of it, Goldfield, 48, told Metro.
He calls his project “To Live 10,000 Years. When he’s done, he plans to publish a book. Goldfield is taking his time. After a year’s worth of traveling from town to town from the Pacific Northwest to New Orleans, often completely at random, he’s taken photos of 26 centenarians in 16 states, he said. Now the nomad’s travels have brought him to Massachusetts. While he’s here — staying in Lexington with his 85-year-old father, who is ill — Goldfield hopes he’ll find two from among the state’s oldest residents who will welcome him and his camera into their lives. Goldfield prefers to find his subjects by chance: driving to a diner in Livingston, Montana, then asking around, or calling in on a whim to an AM radio station in northern California. When he settles on one centenarian, he said,

Gwen Stefani was feeling a bit revealing this week, letting slip what appears to be the full 12-song lineup for her new solo album. And while the first single, “Used to Love You, which came out late last year, suggests a focus on the end of her marriage to Gavin Rossdale, the complete list isn’t as bleak as you might expect. The fun part comes in guessing which tracks might be Rossdalerelated and which might be about new at-work boyfriend Blake Shelton. Sure, there are more than a few titles in the dozen that suggest they won’t be the happiest of numbers — “Misery, “Truth and “Red Flag are particular standouts — but a lot of the titles seem downright perky. NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

Rethinking the runway Fashion Week needs a makeover, and designer Rebecca Minkoff leads the charge with her buy-now-wear-now collection. Oh, and consumers? Don’t forget to RSVP. TINA CHADHA @TinaatMetro
tina.chadha@metro.us
What happens when Fashion Week stops being fashionable? If you’re Rebecca Minkoff, you flip it on its head. “We talk a lot about wanting to be pioneers and wanting to disrupt,” says the 36-year-old designer, black leather moto draped across her shoulders with rebel insouciance. But most designers continue to maintain the status quo.
“Someone pointed out to us whenever we follow the old way, we never win,” she says. “And the second this person said that, I was like, ‘I’m not scared at all. F— it.’” This season, Minkoff is ditching the traditional fashion-show system. Today, as New York Fashion Week kicks off, most designers will present their Fall 2016 collections, available to consumers in August. But in our age of social media, images of the clothes are instantly everywhere. By the time garments hit the sales floor six months later, customers are sick of them and onto the next thing. Minkoff, instead, will show her Spring 2016 line, arriving in stores within 30 days. The see-now-buy-now plan better satisfies her plugged-in customer. “It really gives the fashion show new meaning,” she says. “If a blogger or

In another radical move, Minkoff will invite “top customers” of the brand to her shows. The designer isn’t the only one gearing up for change. Hours after her big news, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that it enlisted Boston Consulting Group to conduct a seven-week study “to define the future of fashion shows.” And other designers are breaking free. Tom Ford, Burberry and Thakoon Panichgul have all announced their own twists on the traditional show. While others in the industry wait and watch this go-round, for Minkoff the timing is right. “Trying to follow the old way and old guard — that whole system never worked for us,” she says. “So now we can just free fall and not be worried about the landing.”

Jessimae Peluso says comedy is a lot like boxing “You have to Rhonda Rousey that s—. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
Comedian Jessimae Peluso calls us, hungover in San Francisco — “Hashtag Thursday, she says. Peluso comes to Laugh Boston for a series of shows Feb. 11-13, making her one of the club’s highest grossing acts of all time. She chats Valentine’s Day, Rhonda Rousey and the best place to record a fart. What did you do last night that you’re hungover today from? I had a show at Punch Line [in] San Francisco and had some tequila with one of the kitchen workers. Then again with the audience because this bitch tried to heckle me so I decided to buy a shot to shut her up and then I realized maybe I shouldn’t do that because people are just going to heckle me to get tequila. So how do you usually deal with hecklers? There’s always the shows where some girl’s had too much tequila, or some guy wants to say something about your ass, but you’ve got to work on your feet. It’s a lot like boxing. You have to have the technique down because you don’t know what [the audience] is going to do. You have to Rhonda Rousey that s—. I think everyone wants to be Rhonda now.
If you go: Jessimae Peluso Laugh Boston, Feb. 11-13 425 Summer St., Boston 617-725-2844 $20-$30, laughboston.com She’s throwing punch lines. TANYA DAHL
I mean, help help me Rhonda. She’s female power. Coming back to Boston is kind of a homecoming for you. I’m so excited. I started comedy in Boston and there are really smart, educated people in Boston. Is Boston a good place to try to become a comedian? I did three years there and I think it’s a great place, because it's still a city, but not too big not too small, and it's still connected to the rest of the world. I think a lot of great comedians that come out of this city because there are a lot of comedy stages to get up on. It was a great beginning point and stepping stone to get into
the comedy world. Tell me about your podcast. It’s called the "Sharp Tongue" podcast, and I like to talk what's happening in the news or things happening with my family. It’s a diary of my crazy brain and what I think about certain events in the world, and then some fart jokes. Where do you usually record? I record in my bathtub because there's good acoustics. I like when a fart hits the floor, and shower farts are amazing they reverberate off the walls. No, really, I record in the studio or in my apartment, but a lot of the time I’m chilling in my tub. I just don't put the water in.

Boston’s best bets, season by season Damange from roads and roundabouts isn’t the only wear-and-tear your car encounters. EMILY WRIGHT @MissEmilyWright letters@metro.us
There’s nothing easy about driving in Boston.
From potholes that could more aptly be called craters, to snowbanks as tall as Wally the Green Monster, maneuvering through our city’s streets — even in the summer — can be treacherous. We asked a handful of automotive experts what cars they would pick for each
season, to help make your time on the road as exhilarating and as safe as possible. Winter
Rory Carroll, director of content at Autoweek says, “The best car for winter driving is the car
you install real snow tires on. Nothing else is even close to as important, not all-wheel drive, not ground clearance. Once you’ve installed the proper tires, you can choose to drive just about anything. But, if you absolutely need to run roughshod over every snowdrift and violate every travel ban, it’s Jeep Wrangler all the way.“ Spring
Brave the salt and ice with the Jeep Wrangler. JIM FRENAK-FPI STUDIOS
Both Carroll and Mike Magrath, features editor at Edmunds, agree: The Mazda Miata is the best car for Boston springs — once the snow has finally melted, that is. “Leave the kids with a sitter, tuck two days’ worth of clothes in the back of the all-new Mazda MX-5 Miata and get out of town,” advises Magrath. “Inexpensive enough to be a second car, but so easy to drive and available

with enough creature comforts — heated seats, navigation, automatic transmission — that you could use it every day.” Carroll concurs, noting, “That first day of spring, when 35 degrees feels like 80, you’re going to want a convertible.” The Jeep Wrangler he
mentioned for winter can also lose its top — winning an extra point for us — Carroll says it’s no match for the Miata. “No car, at any price point, can match the current Mazda Miata for pure driving joy. If you’re capable of joy at all, go test-drive one.”

Take the scenic route in the Toyota Prius. TOYOTA
Summer
If you want to hit the road for one of New England’s many picturesque day-trip destinations, fuel efficiency is key. “In summer, you want to travel and spend your
money where you are, not getting there,” says Magrath. “For those reasons, the 52-mpg Toyota Prius is my pick. Load up a few friends, your finest beach gear and spend the money you saved on gas on sunscreen and lobster rolls.”
Avoid a fall folly with the Suburu Outback.
Fall
Once Boston’s roads are slick with wet autumn leaves, Magrath recommends you give your tires an early check for optimal conditions. “While 4/AWD isn’t a
necessity, it can help for surprise traction losses,” he says. “For this kind of weather, long wheelbases, wide track and low center of gravity all help maintain stability. The Subaru Outback and its Legacy sedan counterpart tick all the

boxes and will effortlessly transition into winter driving.” Above all, if you’re brave enough to buy a car and have the guts to battle for street parking in Boston, make sure that you properly maintain your
vehicle, no matter the season. When it comes to the winter months, Edmunds recommends keeping your tires properly inflated, having a set of jumper cables in your trunk and making sure it’s in serviceable condition.

Hudway Glass
Inspired by rally racing, Hudway Glass is a
dual-purpose heads-up display that works not only to keep your eyes
on the road but also to keep your cellphone out of your hand. The plastic lens display mirrors the images on the face of your smart phone and reflects them onto the windshield, transforming the glass into a speedometer or navigation display, among other things. Any app that supports a heads-up display will work with Hudway Glass. Unfortunately, apps like Google Maps and Waze don’t come equipped with HUD capabilities, but the folks at Hudway Glass have a list of suggestions to
help work around that. Uncrate calls it “a smart alternative to standalone units,” and said although it isn’t the first of its kind they’ve seen, it “makes the most sense.” (MSRP $49, pre-order for May 2016 shipments)

Digital Trends gives Yada an eight-out-of-10, citing its clear 5-inch monitor and clear visibility in low light as some of its high points. The camera, which is wired above your rear license plate, involves some assembly — it took experienced Digital Trends writer, Nolan Browning, about a half hour to install his — but Browning calls it “one of the most simple and convenient safety updates to your car.” (MSRP $200)

Luxurious log cabins across the US
Plan a rustic escape without totally disconnecting.
There’s something inherently cozy about a rustic log-cabin getaway, but if a back-to-the-basics vacation — no Wi-Fi! — sounds intimidating, consider a log-cabin hotel. They offer all the charm of a simple A-frame structure in the middle of nowhere, coupled with modern conveniences (hello, room service). Here’s our look at some of the most luxurious log-cabin-inspired
getaways in the U.S.
Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado The antique miner’s cottages at Dunton Hot Springs look historically accurate from the outside, but the interiors are anything but rustic. This entire resort is crafted from a restored 1800s ghost town. Some of the cabins have outdoor showers to make the most of the mountain views, and there are hot springs on site. Insider tip: While most people don’t associate Colorado with wine, Dun-
ton has a sister property called Sutcliffe Vineyards about an hour-and-a-half away.
El Capitan Canyon, California Known as a pioneer of “glamping,” El Capitan Canyon is tucked among groves of oak and sycamore trees. The resort offers a mix of safari tents, upscale cedar cabins and adventure yurts. The interiors are decked out with all the comforts, including full bathrooms and kitchenettes. Insider tip: Don’t miss the trout sculptures on
the property’s Larry Callahan Bridge, which symbolize the fish ladders the hotel has helped build to allow safe passage of steelhead trout back to El Capitan Canyon Creek.
The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch, Wyoming This luxury dude ranch is spread over 30,000 acres, and guests of The Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch have plenty of choices when it comes to accommodation. The cabins range from new buildings to renovated historic
ones, and interiors are rustic but luxurious, with sitting rooms and glass showers. Family-style feasts are served up in the Lodge Great Room, and activities include horseback riding, fly fishing and clay-pigeon shooting. Insider tip: To reach the ranch, take the Snowy Range Scenic Byway, which crosses the Medicine Bow Mountains and offers views of the glacialfed Lake Marie.
Post Ranch Inn, California The Post Ranch Inn is located high above the Pa-
cific Ocean, and the wood and glass design of the cottages is meant to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Some are even meant to be a modern riff on a traditional log cabin, such as the stand-alone Tree Houses, which are built on stilts 9 feet above the forest floor. Insider tip: Nearby Pfeiffer Beach is known for its purple sand and natural arches, but head to the far north end of the beach, where heart-shaped rocks wash up on shore. To see even more luxurious cabins across the country, go to Fodors.com.

Many players have already begun to arrive at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, which means baseball season is right around the corner. The Red Sox finished last in the AL East for the third time in four years last season, and the organization brought on Dave Dombrowski as the president of baseball operations at the end of the season. Dombrowski got right down to business. The new boss made a few key moves this past offseason, bringing some big-name players to Boston. Here is a look at three of them and what to expect from them this season:
David Price Price is the No. 1 starter the Red Sox have been
in search of since Jon Lester was traded. Price is familiar with the AL East and has had a great deal of success in the division, which was one of the biggest reasons why he was at the top of the Red Sox’ priority list. Price’s numbers at Fenway Park over the years have been outstanding. In 11 starts at Fenway, Price is 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA, the lowest at any ballpark in the league where he has more than one start. Price will be a huge influence not only on the mound, but by the way he leads the staff and the rest of the team.
Craig Kimbrel With Koji Uehara turning 41 at the beginning of April, the Red Sox needed to go out and get a proven closer and they certainly did in trading for Kimbrel. The 27-yearold has had at least 39 saves in five straight seasons, making him one of the best closers in baseball. The Red Sox’s bullpen was a major issue last year and Dombrows-

Chris Young It was thought Young wanted to play every day, but instead the Red Sox now have arguably the best fourth outfielder in baseball, which is a good thing to have when the team will have one of the youngest outfields in the game with Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts and Rusney Castillo. Young will provide a solid option for when one of the three need a down day, or are going through a tough stretch. The former Yankee brings 10 years of experience to the team and is coming off a year where he hit .252 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs. The right-handed hitter could see the bulk of his playing time against left-handers and could put up some pretty good numbers with the Green Monster hanging over Fenway in left field.

If you feel overwhelmed or confused by the amount of health information now available, then the Longwood Seminars at Harvard Medical School may be just what the doctor ordered. To help you navigate the constant stream of health messages, the Longwood Seminars at Harvard Medical School offer the general public reliable information on complex health and scientific issues—at no cost. No scientific background is needed to enroll in
these mini-med school seminars. Those who attend three or more classes are eligible for a Certificate of Completion. Teachers who attend all four classes can earn 10 professional development points (PDPs). At each seminar, Harvard Medical School faculty present an overview and explain both the scientific ideas and the clinical applications of the topic, as well as bring you up to date on the latest research. During the Q&A session, you will have the opportunity to
put your own questions to the experts. THE 2016 SERIES FEATURES: March 8 Now and Zen: How mindfulness can change your brain and improve your health Harvard scientists were some of the first to uncover the impact of meditation on health. Their finding: mindfulness can change your brain in positive ways. At this seminar, a panel of Harvard Medical School faculty will discuss the neuroscience of meditation and mindfulness.
March 22 A Better Ending: A new beginning for the end of life Talking about death with family members or health care providers can be frightening and uncomfortable, but these conversations are necessary. In this seminar, you will learn how Harvard Medical School doctors are helping to transform end-of-life care by embracing—rather than avoiding—difficult conversations about ethics, palliative care and what patients want at the end of life. April 5 Taking It All In: Environmental toxins and your health
Chemicals are used in plastics, furniture, cosmetics and even in the foods we eat, while other pollutants contaminate our air and water. But do you know how these environmental exposures impact your health? Harvard Medical School researchers will present the data behind this silent threat to your health and how you can protect yourself and your family. April 19 The New Old Age: How the body ages and how to keep it young No one wants to become forgetful or less energetic as they age, but growing old is
unavoidable—or is it? At this seminar, learn about the biology of aging and about scientific research at Harvard Medical School that may help keep you healthier and feeling younger at the same time.
