Major powers were beginning a new round of Syria peace talks focusing on calls for a cease-fire and access for humanitarian aid. But with the Syrian opposition saying it cannot accept a truce in the current climate because it does not trust the Russians, diplomats saw little chance of progress at discussions in the German city of Munich. A Western diplomat told Reuters that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wanted an immediate cease-fire in Syria – “All or nothing” – although the Russians have proposed a truce from the beginning of next month. Cops posted an “advertisement” on its Facebook page Thursday, enticing drug dealers to allow the department to assist them with any taxrelated questions. The post stated: “Attention drug dealers operating

Could that late night trip to Wendy’s be a business expense? Can you claim mileage if using your personal vehicle for business transactions?” So far, the ad has received over 11,000 likes and nearly 5,000 shares. JASON NUCKOLLS

Sentencing delayed for 80-year-old pot dealer Officers uncovered approximately $15 million in cash, 400 pounds of marijuana and drug-dealing records dating back to 1992. JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

An 80-year-old man was expected to face sentencing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boston for running a large multistate marijuana operation for years, but the hearing was delayed until next month. A federal judge in Boston pushed back the hearing until March 10 because she wanted prosecutors and Marshall Dion’s lawyer to submit sentencing briefs, The Herald reported. Dion’s lawyer told The Herald that U.S. District Judge Denise Casper wanted to know why the proposed sentence in Dion’s plea agreement is up to seven years in prison when federal sentencing guidelines call for 30 years. Prosecutors in Boston had agreed to a plea deal from Dion for having

distributed marijuana for decades, WHDH reported. Prosecutors said in a court filing that Dion “had been trafficking in large amounts of marijuana since at least 1992,” the Daily Mail stated. Dion’s drug-smuggling career included several interesting runins with police, including a 1985 Wisconsin single-engine plane crash that left a field strewn with cash, which Dion denied was his, even though he was piloting the small plane, WHDH added. In 1989, Dion was convicted of drug trafficking after police found more than 100 pounds of marijuana in his car, the Daily Mail reported. Most recently, Dion was stopped for speeding in Kansas in 2013, and officers found nearly $850,000 in his pickup truck. That stop ultimately led officers to uncover approximately $15 million in cash, 400 pounds of marijuana and drugdealing records dating back to 1992, WHDH added. Despite the millions authorities recovered, Dion seemed to live frugally, according to the Daily Mail.

The morning after a Black Lives Matter vigil in Jamaica Plain, the neighborhood woke up to at least one case of vandalism outside a local church on Thursday. incident came after the third installment of monthly Black Lives Matter vigils outside First Baptist. “It’s just proof again

that we need people to stand up and stand out and kind of reclaim the space for black lives,” Ann Philbin, vigil organizer, told Metro. Similar cases of vandalism were also reported in Arlington last year. Philbin said she hadn’t heard about the vandalism, but that the community would likely

hold some kind of event in response to the incident. Asked to respond to the “All Lives Matter” idea, Philbin said the notion misses the point BLM is trying to make about race in America. “When I personally hear someone say ‘All Lives Matter,’ I feel like that person is either ignorant or in denial about white privilege in our society — acting as if our lives all start in equal places and as if our lives are valued equally, and they’re not.” Jamaica Plain resident Margaret Zamos-Monteith, who tweeted a photo of the banner Thursday morning, told Metro she didn’t expect to see that kind of vandalism in her neighborhood. “It’s so dismaying, especially in JP,” she said. “You think this is a progressive neighborhood, that this is a place where people do care about, and get, the cause.”

‘All hands on deck’ at shelter Relationshipbuilding “key to bringing Boston’s homeless in from the cold, says Pine Street Inn. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

For many of Boston’s homeless, it can take some convincing to come out of the dangers of the bitter cold and into the warmth of a shelter. It requires a gentle touch and a familiar face to get the city’s homeless population to head indoors, said Michael Andrick, director of outreach services for the Pine Street Inn on Harrison Avenue. “That relationship is key,â€? Andrick told Metro. He said staff work throughout the year on “building that therapeutic alliance where someone is going to trust you enough that they’re willing to con-

sider some other options other than sleeping on the street. With low temperatures in the forecast and the chilliest part of the season approaching, staff at Pine Street say they are

ramping up efforts to find at-risk homeless Bostonians and shuttle them to its facility. Two vans, with two or three staff members apiece, travel around the city, hitting hot spots like Downtown Crossing or areas surrounding South Station – one during the day, another at night. When the forecast calls for cold, Andrick said, “it’s all hands on deck. Many don’t want or are reluctant to take help, said Lyndia Downie, Pine Street’s president and executive director. They may have mental health issues, or may be addicted to drugs, she said. Others fear losing their spot on the street, or worry their possessions will be stolen, she said. Also, staff members said, many would just prefer not to have to stay in a shelter, which can be a cramped, hectic environment. “It’s overwhelming, particularly for men who

haven’t been here before or haven’t experienced homelessness in this large environment, said Josh O’Brien, Pine Street’s men’s shelter director. The facility at this time of year is frequently over capacity, he said. The men’s shelter has 380 beds, but has housed as many as 500 or more. When beds are full, the rest of the men sleep in cots or on the floor on body-length rectangular cushions. A number of factors are driving an increase in demand for beds, Downie said, pointing to a tight housing market and an ongoing opioid

abuse crisis. Also, since the closure of a shelter on Long Island in 2014, the city has less “flexibility for influxes or people seeking help during the cold, she said. Downie urged those who spot people outside in the cold who might be in danger to call 911. She said homelessness outreach organizations also accept tips, but first-responders can arrive much more quickly than shelter staff. No one has died in the cold this year, she said, nor did anyone die during last year’s particularly harsh season. “We can do the best we

can but it doesn’t mean we’re not going to lose somebody, she said. Wayne S., meanwhile, didn’t need to be convinced when it came time to get help at the shelter. A friend from Alcoholics Anonymous brought him there about three years ago, he said, and he’s been staying at Pine Street frequently since then. The 48-year-old asked reporters not to print his last name. “They’ve always been really good people, so I trusted them, he said. “I gave my trust to them and they’ve done nothing but help me since I’ve been here.

DEMOCRATS, LET’S GET IN FORMATION While my fellow liberals on social media relished rubbing in my face Bernie Sanders’ margin of victory over Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire Democratic primary—my frustration was directed somewhere else. Real Clinton followers expected this to happen, because New Hampshire might as well be Vermont given how close the states are to one another. But what startled me most about the primary was seeing Sanders’ “revolution” gain momentum among Democrats, another revolutionary reigned supreme in the GOP. Donald Trump won a presidential primary. It’s time for us to get serious right now. I can’t even laugh at his gaffes or try to ignore his prowess anymore.

Democrats right now are too busy taking cheap shots at each other over who’s more progressive. The conversation has gone from a sincere intellectual debate to a petty indictment of racial communities and their voting habits. I’m sorry, but my black vote going to Hillary isn’t me being brainwashed by “the establishment.” It’s actually my personal understanding of dealing with a real-time crisis and shooting for immediate results. Voting for Hillary doesn’t make me, an openly gay black millennial, not progressive. Sanders supporters’ litmus test on measuring such progressiveness doesn’t account for what it actually is—progress, which is relative. Instead, those who have tried to divide the party on these matters have distorted

history in order to make a point. When folks say Hillary wasn’t initially in favor of gay marriage in the late ’90s—neither were many of your favorite liberal politicians, including President Obama. Even pop culture was dredged in homophobic content that wouldn’t fly in today’s times. But now many liberals are trying to point out a racial divide in the party. It’s time for Democrats to reevaluate how they publicly bash their potential presidential candidates and play fair. Otherwise, we can lose it all.

Last four occupiers surrender in Oregon The final four holdouts in an armed protest at a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon surrendered Thursday, with the last occupier repeatedly threatening suicide before he walked out, ending the 41-day standoff with the FBI. David Fry, 27, had remained behind for more than an hour and told supporters by phone he had not agreed with the other three to leave. The phone conversation was broadcast live on an audio feed. “I’m actually pointing a gun at my head, I’m tired of living, Fry said during the phone call. He later added, “Until you address my grievances, you’re probably going to have to watch me be killed, or kill myself. Fry finally surrendered and authorities could be heard over the phone line telling him to put his hands up before the call disconnected. Portland’s KGW television later showed a caravan of sport utility vehicles escorted by police driving out of the refuge in remote eastern Oregon. WHY IS HILLARY KEEPING HER SPEECHES SO SECRET? Let’s do the math. Hillary Clinton has been paid $21.6 million dollars for 92 speeches in the past few years. That’s roughly $235,000 per appearance. An hour at each event would be $3,917 a minute. At 160 words per minute, that’s about $24 per word. So, “Hi, I am Hillary Clinton. Thank you for having me here tonight,” equals $288 — or just about a week’s work at minimum wage. And her campaign wonders why people are curious about what she said in those speeches. But when pressed to release transcripts — especially of her speeches to the big banking firms she promises to be tough on — her answer in the most recent Democratic candidates’ debate was: “I will look into it.” Her campaign’s handling of this whole matter seems to be the

THE FOREMAN OPINION

TOM FOREMAN political equivalent of smearing yourself with Nutella and jumping into a cage of howler monkeys. Why? First, when your Democratic opponent is not so subtly suggesting you are deep in the pocket of Wall Street, you don’t want to be caught carrying a suitcase full of cash out of a private meeting with the little Monopoly-player-men — even metaphorically. Second, when you just got ripped in New Hampshire, in part because many voters don’t exactly trust you, you can’t make it look like you’re hiding something. And third, when you’re pounding on

the idea that income disparity is a serious issue, it’s hard to hear you when the chartered Gulf Stream is revving its engines to take you home. Clinton insists that there were no shenanigans; she did not exchange favors or influence for those whopping checks. She gave her speeches, ate some chicken and went on her way. Fair enough. So far there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. But why she took any money from such groups while even flirting with a possible presidential bid is baffling. The optics are simply a mess. Advice to Camp Clinton: You’re looking into it? Look a little faster. Because a lot of people, including many of your fans, can already tell you it doesn’t look good.

North Korea ordered South Koreans out of the zone by late afternoon, forbidding them to take anything other than personal belongings, KCNA said. South Korea said after the North’s announcement that its top priority was the safe return of all of its people. Halting activity at the park, where 124 South Korean companies employed about 55,000

North Koreans, cuts the last significant vestige of North-South cooperation — a rare opportunity for Koreans divided by the 1950-53 war to interact on a daily basis. Scientists have for the first time detected gravitational waves, ripples in space and time hypothesized by Albert Einstein a century ago, in a landmark discovery announced on Thursday that opens a new window for studying the cosmos. The researchers said they detected gravitational waves coming from two distant black holes— extraordinarily dense objects whose existence also was foreseen by Einstein—that orbited one another, spiraled inward and smashed together. They said the waves were the product of a collision between two black holes roughly 30 times the mass of the sun, located 1.3 billion light years from Earth. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have detected

“The holy grail of science” Scientists said gravitational waves open a door for a new way to observe the universe and gain knowledge about enigmatic objects like black holes and neutron stars. By studying gravitational waves they also hope to gain insight into the nature of the very early universe, which has remained mysterious. Everything we know about the cosmos stems from electromagnetic waves such as radio waves, visible light, infrared light, X-rays and gamma rays. But because such waves encounter interference as they travel across the universe, they can tell only part of the story.

gravitational waves. We did it,” said California Institute of Technology physicist David Reitze, triggering applause at a packed news conference in Washington. “It’s been a very long road, but this is just the beginning,” Louisiana

Gravitational waves experience no such barriers, meaning they can offer a wealth of additional information. Black holes, for example, do not emit light, radio waves and the like, but can be studied via gravitational waves. The scientists said that because gravitational waves are so radically different from electromagnetic waves they expect them to reveal big surprises about the universe. Scientists sounded positively giddy over the discovery. “This is the holy grail of science,” said Rochester Institute of Technology astrophysicist Carlos Lousto.

State University physicist Gabriela Gonzalez told the news conference, touting the opening of a new era in astronomy. The scientific milestone was achieved using a pair of giant laser detectors in the United States, located in Louisiana and

Washington state, capping a decades-long quest to find these waves. “The colliding black holes that produced these gravitational waves created a violent storm in the fabric of space and time, a storm in which time speeded up, and slowed down, and speeded up again, a storm in which the shape of space was bent in this way and that way,” Caltech physicist Kip Thorne said. The two laser instruments, which work in unison, are known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). They were able to detect remarkably small vibrations from passing gravitational waves. After detecting the gravitational wave signal, the scientists said they converted it into audio waves and were able to listen to the sounds of the two black holes merging. “We’re actually hearing them go thump in

Einstein’s theory Einstein in 1916 proposed the existence of gravitational waves as an outgrowth of his ground-breaking general theory of relativity, which depicted gravity as a distortion of space and time triggered by the presence of matter. But until now scientists had found only indirect evidence of their existence.

the night,” Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist Matthew Evans

said. “We’re getting a signal which arrives at Earth, and we can put it on a speaker, and we can hear these black holes go, ‘Whoop.’ There’s a very visceral connection to this observation.” The scientists said they first detected the gravitational waves last Sept. 14. “We are really witnessing the opening of a new tool for doing astronomy,” MIT astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala said in an interview. “We have turned on a new sense. We have been able to see and now we will be able to hear as well.” REUTERS

Over the years Ryan Reynolds, 39, has gone from comedic to dramatic, turning serious in films like “Buried and “Mississippi Grind. With “Deadpool he brings back the quipping Reynolds of “Two Girls and a Pizza Place and “Just Friends, cracking jokes as his comic book avenger (who’s not an Avenger).

This seems like a role that really brings the best out of you. It’s athletic yet comedic. I humbly agree! It’s the role I’ve been most passionate about. I love everything about that boy! I am very grateful that I was given a chance to do this movie. I didn’t think I ever would. You spend most of the movie with a mask over your face. It can be difďŹ cult, it seems, to act when your most expressive feature is concealed. Yes, it is. At first I was scared, because I thought, how are we going to tell the story? Highly Suspect: The Grammy underdog you should know The Brooklynbased rockers are nominated in two categories this year. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

Cape Cod-bred Highly Suspect is kind of the Grammy rock category’s wild card. The newcomers didn’t expect to be nominated, nor do they think they’ll win, but they’re cool with that. “When you get nominated, you’ve already won,” says drummer Ryan Meyer, who founded the band with twin, Rich, and friend Johnny Stevens in 2009. “I’m grateful for that, and I’m going in expect-

ing that Elle King will take [rock] song and Muse will take [rock] album, and I’m very happy for them.” The band’s debut, “Mister Asylum,” earned them the Best Rock Album nod, while “Lydia” snagged them Best Rock Song. The Brooklyn-based trio, deemed the “U.S. answer to Royal Blood” by NME.com, shares their categories with the likes of the Alabama Shakes’ “Don’t Wanna Fight,” James Bay’s “Chaos and the Calm,” Florence & The Machine’s “What Kind of Man” and, of course, Muse’s “Drones.” “I think it’s amazing we’re in the same category,” continues Meyer. “Especially Muse — we’ve been huge

fans forever and we all went to see them at the Boston’s [T.D.] Garden years ago. I just remember walking out of that concert without a head; it felt like it had unattached to my body.” “We’re sitting next to them at the Grammys,” he adds. “I’ll try not to be a fan boy. I’ll try to be polite. But it’s hard.” The 30-year-old kept mum on who would dress them for the night (later reveled in a Billboard exclusive that it will be John Varvatos), but he says the shock is starting to wear off after the band got the call that they had been nominated. “I’m more comfortable with it now. There were so many stages: the shock and then the

couple of days digesting the news while also fielding lots of calls. All of us were nonstop on every social media you could ever imagine with people coming out of the woodworks. People from high school were suddenly your best friends. We’re adjusting to it now, but it was interest-

ing. Now we’re going through prep and doing interviews for before the show. I’m feeling more confident with it.” And while Highly Suspect is easily labeled a “Brooklyn band,” its members still feel attached to their small town roots — the Meyer twins growing up in Yar-

mouth and Stevens close by in Dennis. “I’ll always rep Cape Cod. That’s where my family is,” says Meyer. “But I can’t deny what Brooklyn did for us as a band. We grew up in a little bubble and then moved to a big city where it’s the hub of everything. It was a culture shock.”

First dates on Valentine’s Day are a thing now Valentine’s Day dread is out and first dates with Cupid as your wingman are in. According to a Zoosk study, 75 percent of singles would be more likely to say “yes” to a first date on Valentine’s Day. This is a major shift from years past. When I started helping singles date online in 2009, they tended to avoid logging into their dating profiles for the entire week. But with apps, people aren’t afraid to meet on a whim (or on a holiday). So even though Valentine’s Day is near, keep swiping! When you’re meeting for the first time on Valentine’s, planning is the most important way to make it a success. Not because you need a fancy reservation, quite the opposite — you want to ensure things stay casual. Here are my do’s and don’ts to help your first date on the 14th turn into a second one later in the week. Go on a day date Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday, make daytime plans. You won’t run into as many couples during the day …

may be a meet-cute, but don’t create unrealistic expectations. Since your date falls on the Hallmark holiday, you may find yourself more hopeful that things will work out. Sometimes, when my clients get overly excited about

Swoon alert: Anderson East spills the beans “I don’t usually get that deep.

If you go:

RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka

rachel.raczka@metro.us

We’re not allowed to talk about Miranda Lambert during our phone conversation with musician Anderson East. The Athens, Alabama-bred musician isn’t going to answer any questions about his personal life, thankyouverymuch. Though all we need to know is peppered throughout Lambert’s Instagram account that documents their canoodling and confirmed relationship. But that’s OK. East is entitled to his privacy, and he has plenty more to talk about. The 27-year-old singersongwriter just kicked off the “Devil in Meâ€? tour, and has the first single off producer Dave Cobb’s new powerhouse compilation, “Southern Family,â€? due March 18, alongside the likes of Zac Brown, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton and yes, Ms. Lambert.  He calls us from Richmond, Virginia, where he’s eating a cup of bean stew.

Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. Brighton Music Hall 158 Brighton Ave., Boston Sold out, ticketmaster.com

East gets deep.

BECKY FLUKE

What’s with the stew — is this how you stay healthy on the road? I’m trying to pack on the nutrients. I don’t let myself think about getting sick, but it’s really just sleep and water and you’re pretty good. Usually the Irish whiskey will kill all the bad, and a humidifier because it gets so dry and my Southern nostrils don’t like it. Your birth name is Mi-

chael Cameron Anderson, so what made you take on a stage name? I think at the time I was tired of myself, to be honest with you. I needed some kind of mental construct to have a difference between me being the guy that pays the phone bill and me being the guy who wants to say something profound. But what’s the signiďŹ cance of East?

That’s pretty deep. I know. I don’t usually get that deep.

do this record for a while, and me and him have been friends for a long time. It’s a real honor for all of us [to be on the album] — me especially. There are a lot of people I look up to greatly on there, and I’m sure others feel that way, too.

How did you get involved with Cobb’s “Southern Family? That was pretty natural. Dave had been wanting to

The musicians on “Southern Family all wrote their songs about their perspectives on growing up in the South,

I wanted a fresh beginning, and the sun rises there, and everything in mythology begins in the East. There’s where everything starts.Â

what does “Learningâ€? mean to you? That title is such a broad title because it means so much to people in so many different ways. For me, I just wanted to write a tune for my old man. I wanted to tell him thanks and that I appreciate him caring so much and being there for me and being so supportive. He was a hard ass when he needed to be, for sure, but it’s more of a “thank youâ€? letter. Were you with him when he heard it for the ďŹ rst time? No, but everyone keeps asking whether or not he’s heard it. I was kind of embarrassed, but I sent it to him the day before it came out, and was like, “I hope you like it, or whatever.â€? He called back very tender afterward, so I assume he liked it.

BRUINS SHOULD LOOK TO TRADE CHARA NOW DANNY PICARD OPINION “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM. @dannypicard

One day, there will be another “33” hanging from the TD Garden rafters. At least, I’d like to live in a world where we aren’t taking championships for granted too much, and Zdeno Chara will be the last Boston Bruin to wear that number. It speaks to how I feel about the guy. And as one of his biggest supporters over the years, what I’m about to say next might surprise you. It’s time for the Boston Bruins to seriously consider trading their captain. I say this with the utmost respect for one of the most dominant shutdown defensemen in NHL history. This isn’t me telling you that Chara’s career is over and that he’s all washed up. No. This is me telling you that there are more than a handful of teams that would be eager to jump at the opportunity to acquire him for a run at the Stanley Cup this year. Because by the looks of it, the Bruins won’t be one of those teams with a realistic shot to win it all in 2016. Sure, they’re in the playoff picture, but after an embarrassing 9-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings

Zdeno Chara has been with the Bruins for 10 years now. GETTY IMAGES

Tuesday night at TD Garden, the B’s defensive issues were once again on full display. And those issues may be too much to overcome this season. In a perfect world, general manager Don Sweeney cooks up a trade that brings a toppair, All-Star defenseman to Boston, so that Chara no longer has to play with a minorleague D-partner. In the real world though, that type of move just doesn’t seem possible. This isn’t Chara’s fault; it’s the organization’s. When the Bruins decided to trade two top-four defensemen — Johnny Boychuk and Dougie Hamilton — for draft picks the last yearand-a-half, their strategy became evident. They were going to rely on the kids. A layer of confusion would be that Hamilton is just 22 years old. He was traded to the Calgary Flames this past offseason. The Bruins claimed Hamilton didn’t want to stay in Boston. But as a restricted free agent, he really didn’t have a choice. They

traded him anyway, and here we are, having to watch Zach Trotman and Kevan Miller try to figure it out at the NHL level on a nightly basis. Defenseman Colin Miller came to Boston as part of the Milan Lucic trade. And while he certainly needs to get more playing time under his belt, watching the game from high above in the press box every once in a while isn’t the worst learning experience for a 23-year-old rookie. The Bruins need serious help on the blue line. And it’s unrealistic to think they’ll find it between now and the Feb. 29 trade deadline. It’s also evident that the organization is clearly relying heavily on draft picks. You don’t have to look any further than the Boychuk, Hamilton and Lucic trades. But if you insist, then you might also want to look ahead to a potential Loui Eriksson trade in the coming weeks. Let’s face it, the Bruins aren’t “going for it all” right now. I never said I agreed with that strategy, but since they seem committed to it,

why not go all the way? That’s where Chara comes in. He turns 39 in March. He’s locked up for two more years at $5 million next season and $4 million in 201718. He still has enough left in the tank to be a difference-maker for a team looking to contend for a Cup right now. That said, it’s not like his trade value is going to increase as the years pass him by. If you’re going to move Chara, or at least consider moving him while you’re collecting all these draft picks, the time is now. Most of the core will remain in Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci and Tuukka Rask, with Bergeron the oldest at 30. And the hope will be that some of these young, drafted defensemen will blossom into legitimate NHL talent while Bergeron, Krejci and Rask are still in their prime. Maybe all three will still be around on “Zdeno Chara Night” at the Garden, as we celebrate the then-former captain’s 10 years with the Bruins, a tenure

that would include five All-Star appearances, a Norris Trophy and a Stanley Cup. Perhaps, by then, there will also be a second Stanley Cup on the eventual Hall of

Famer’s resume. It just wouldn’t be won with the Bruins. Which is another reason why trading Chara now would be the right thing to do.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: MAKE YOUR DYNASTY LAST FOREVER FANTASY SPORTS

ADAM LEVITAN

alevitan@metro.us

Deep down, we all think we can do better than professional general managers. I never would have dumped $63 million on Byron Maxwell, taken JaMarcus Russell No. 1 overall or traded a 29-year-old Randy Moss to the Patriots. Of course, I’ll never get to be general manager, so I have to prove it in a fantasy world. The best place to do so is a dynasty league. This format mirrors real football in that owners have players forever and rosters are only supplemented through a yearly rookie draft or trades. We constantly have to balance between

staying young enough for the future and winning now. Some tips for succeeding in dynasty leagues:

get us in the short term. An example from last year was Ronnie Hillman, who was producing at a solid level but is not a difference-making talent. Resisting the urge to give up a struggling but high-ceiling asset like Melvin Gordon for a guy like Hillman is crucial.

Wide on wide receiver Even before the NFL change skewed their rules toward the pass, wideouts were the kings of dynasty. Running backs have an extremely short shelf life, quarterback is the deepest position and tight ends typically don’t score enough raw points. If we land an elite wide receiver early in his career, we can have a stud for a literal decade. That’s why young, big, gifted wideouts such as Allen Robinson, Mike Evans, Sammy Watkins, Amari Cooper, Martavis Bryant and Dorial GreenBeckham are far more valuable in dynasty than standard 2016 leagues.

Changing environments

Wide receivers like Allen Robinson are extremely valuable in dynasty leagues. GETTY IMAGES

Talent over opportunity Real-life general managers often make personnel

decisions based on need. That’s a surefire way to run into problems down the road. Dynasty players have to take a similar

long view, understanding that having good players is more important than how many fantasy points they can

Standard fantasy leaguers can significantly downgrade or even ignore players in bad situations such as Cleveland, St. Louis, Tennessee or San Francisco. Dynasty leaguers should not. Demaryius Thomas went from a Tim Tebow plodding offense to one of the best offenses ever under Peyton Manning. Rex Ryan left the Jets and allowed the pass game to spread its wings.
