Southeast Asia requires 3,750 new aircraft worth $550 billion in 20 years from 2015, a senior Boeing executive told a press conference ahead of the Singapore Airshow that starts on Tuesday. Of this, 76 percent will be for single-aisle aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice-president for Asia Pacific and India sales at Boeing. REUTERS
At least 23 civilians were killed when missiles hit three hospitals and a school in rebel-held Syrian towns on Monday, residents said, as Russian-backed Syrian troops intensified their push toward the rebel stronghold of Aleppo. Fourteen people were killed in the town of Azaz near the Turkish border when missiles slammed into a school sheltering families fleeing the offensive and the children’s hospital. Bombs also hit another refugee shelter south of the town and a convoy of trucks, another resident said. REUTERS

If young people in Somerville don’t vote, who’s to blame? “There’s a really strong institutional bias against renters.”
A group is hosting a summit on giving a voice to apartmentdwelling millenials.

What role should Somerville’s young renters — who may not spend more than a few years at a time in the city — play in local politics? That’s the question a city-affiliated summit this week seeks to address. The meeting at Workbar Wednesday night, called “Where’s our representation? (And is it our fault?),” is among the first events being offered by a newly rebooted mayor’s advisory group called Young Somerville, which aims to boost involvement of people ages 21 to 35, who’ve been lessthan-active in city politics. Nearly everyone in Somerville elective office is a homeowner. “The people who are here, even if they’re only here five to 10 years, that’s a good amount of time, but they’re not engaged in the political process,” said Emily Hopkins, managing editor at the local magazine Scout
Susanna Ronalds-Hannon, 27, and Ryan Brill weighed in. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI
Somerville. “That’s the issue for me.” Hopkins, who lives in Allston, wrote a January article on the issue after incumbents dominated the local election in 2015. Her story “inspired” the meeting, according to an event listing. The Scout Somerville story also chronicled an unsuccessful bid for a
seat on the city’s Board of Aldermen by candidate Elizabeth Weinbloom. Weinbloom ran on a platform of representing renters and millennial issues. She didn’t win, but captured 35 percent of the vote in her ward. During her doorknocking campaign, she said she found an alarming number of people
WE’VE RECOVERED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR OUR CLIENTS
who rent apartments know nothing about local politics. It isn’t just a case of voter apathy, she said. She called on Somerville to increase voter registration efforts and to seek out and educate renters about the local political process. She did, however, applaud Mayor Joseph Curtatone for his
social media presence. She said young renters may be among the most important voices to hear in a city where rents are climbing rapidly. After all, she said, many leave the city after a few years not because they want to, but because they can’t afford to stay. “So many of us — particularly millennial renters — want to be building our home in Somerville and we don’t know if we’ll be able to because of the soaring rental costs,” she said. Metro set out to hear from young Somerville residents in Union Square on Monday. Maurice Foundas, 35, said he plans to stay in the city until he can buy a home. He’s been following issues that matter to him, like housing and gentrification and the redevelopment of Union Square. Many of his peers, though, don’t think as long-term. “For most people who rent in any city, they’re
not going to be as involved because they don’t think they’re going to be here long enough to see any results from anything they’re involved in,” he said. Foundas suggested the city hold more of its meetings at night, so they don’t conflict with young professionals’ work schedules. Susanna RonaldsHannon, 27, said if making young people more politically active is going to happen, it’s probably going to happen on social media. “As long as it’s engaging in a way that young people can lead it themselves,” she said. Nicole Chininis, 28, said no one has asked her to get involved. “I haven’t really been into that, paying attention to what’s going on around here, which is probably bad of me,” she said, adding, “I haven’t really seen active people, so I guess it’s not really making me want to be more active.”

T hints at dropping late-night service When T drivers most recently picked their shift preferences, the late-night shift was not offered. JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
The MBTA has recently, though unofficially, indicated that late-night service may soon be a thing of the past. When T drivers picked their latest shift preferences, the late-night slots were not offered. That could be a sign that latenight service may soon be eliminated from the schedule altogether. Joe Pesaturo, an MBTA spokesman, said in an email to The Boston Globe, that “no decision has been made,” and spring schedules do not include the late-night shifts because adding rail trips at a later time is easier than removing them from the schedule. “We didn’t want to have them sign up for things that could be changing,” MBTA board member Monica TibbitsNutt was quoted by the Globe, echoing Pesaturo’s point about scheduling.
MBTA plans to scale back late-night service. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI
“This isn’t about logistics, this isn’t about planning ahead. This is about the fact that this public process is a sham.” Caroline Casey, a T Riders Union community organizer, to the Globe
The MBTA vote on latenight service will take place on Feb. 29, but some worry that public involvement in any decision-making is for naught since officials already seem to have their minds made up on canceling late-night service, even though they say no decision has been made, the Globe added. Started in 2001, latenight service was dropped four years later due to low ridership, only to be brought back in 2014 with the most popular bus and subway lines having extended hours, according to WHDH, which added
that the cost of late-night service is $14 million per year. Since then, members of the T’s oversight board have heard reports that ridership late at night is low. Waiting for his train at South Station Monday afternoon, 19-year-old Harvard student Gillermo Gomez said he rides the T during the day, but never at night — the latest he’s used the subway is 4 p.m. The crowd using latenight service, he said, seems like it could be a “a little sketchy.” But Brian Finn, 24,
a former student at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, said he thought the T should instead be increasing its latenight service coverage, offering trains 24 hours per day. “That would be awesome. It would give you a little more peace of mind when you’re out late with friends,” he said. He now lives in Haverhill. As for the possibility that the T could halt the service, Finn said, “I wouldn’t like that.” Spencer Buell contributed to this report.

WHAT NEXT AFTER ROLLICKING GOP DEBATE? Let’s face it: Some days watching politics can be like watching other people make out – sure, it’s fun for them, but what do I get out of it? Lately, however, I’ve been having a blast eyeballing this free-for-all barroom brawl that is passing for a presidential election. And I think this week may be one for the record books – here are my three things to watch. 1. Republican Punch Up: The broken bones have been splinted, and the ice packs handed out following the weekend debate; watch for the GOP’ers to roar back out on the trail looking for revenge. They’ve dropped all pretense of “never speaking ill of a fellow Republican” as Reagan urged. Trump and Cruz will keep trading body blows, the rest of the gang will keep savaging each other, and everyone will keep hoping to be the last man standing. Next trial match: South Carolina on Saturday. Expect no gloves, no surrender and no mercy until
TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the new book “My Year of Running Dangerously.”
that vote is done. 2. Dem-olition Crew: The Democratic contenders
spent a couple of months chortling at the raging Repubs, but now they’ve got a war all their own. I, for one, can’t wait to see what comes next in the increasingly fierce battle for the Democratic nomination, or as I like to call it, “Sharknado 5.” Sanders will mainly counterattack – it is his nature. But heading into the Nevada caucuses, which are also on Saturday, watch for Camp Clinton to try to bite down hard and draw serious blood. She must come out of the next contest with a solid win, or that campaign shake-up I’ve been predicting becomes a sure thing. 3. Race Relations: The most important subtext of the Democratic contest right now is the battle for minority voters. Make no mistake, this is dicey territory where the line between pandering and politicking can be very thin. Clinton has an edge, but if she tries to play it too hard it could go bad fast – with costly consequences.

BRIEF Foreclosure crisis snarls Clinton, Sanders’ efforts to reach Nevada voters Democratic presidential hopefuls Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are flooding Nevada with volunteers ahead of this week’s key nominating contest, but they face a problem — the addresses, phone numbers and other personal data they need to reach many voters are out of date. Nevada, which is more than

a quarter Latino, was one of the states worst affected by the 2008 financial meltdown, with hundreds of thousands of families unable to pay their mortgages and forced to move in a crisis that by some estimates hit minorities twice as hard as whites. With the foreclosed homes often switching hands multiple times — from homeowner to bank to investor and back to another homeowner in just a few
years — keeping up with voters who at some point lived in those homes is difficult. The Nevada caucus has emerged as an important test of Sanders’ and Clinton’s political strength. Clinton is under pressure to keep her lead among Latinos, while Sanders must erode it to show he has a path to the nomination that does not rely mainly on the young white voters who make up the core of his support. How about some Kim and Kanye divorce rumors?
Hey everybody, in case you weren’t sure, “The Voice” cohorts Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are really, really into each other. And they want the whole world to know, primarily via excessive public displays of affection everywhere they go. The pair spent Gram-
mys weekend — and OK, it was also Valentine’s Day — hitting up Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys party in LA. They also danced real close during a performance by Carly Simon and an Earth Wind & Fire tribute, then slipped out around 11:30 p.m. Hopefully to get a room.
Katy Perry takes Orlando with her everywhere
While Kanye West spent Valentine’s Day begging Mark Zuckerberg to bail him out, his wife was sending some cryptic messages of her own that suggest maybe all is not so peachy in the Kardashian-West household. Kardashian posted a video to Instagram of her rolling around on a rosestrewn floor as, in the
background, a haunting voice sings, “Hard to love a girl like me. I don’t blame you much for wanting to be free.” That’s rather troubling, no? It probably doesn’t help that the new music features lyrics calling Kardashian a bitch, hinting at divorce as an option and name-checking Ray J, her infamous sex tape partner. Charming.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani weren’t the only ones turning heads around over the Valentine weekend. Rumored new couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom stepped out together at not just one but two preGrammy awards events. First they hit up an Adele concert, outside of which her ex, John Mayer, was spotted with a mystery date. And the next night Perry

It was obvious that they are really, really into each other.” Obviously.

ImprovBoston will be flooded with college students this week as improv groups from schools throughout New England come together for the 11th annual College Comedy Festival and Beanpot Tournament. The festival, which will run Feb. 18-20, will host 18 troupes for a weekend of competition, collaboration and comedy. In addition to three types of competitions, students will participate in various workshops and panels. Mac Gostow, the festival’s executive producer, explained that the workshops deviate from just teaching basic improv skills to include areas such as physicality and even clowning. “We have one guy, Jake McDowell, who’s been trained professionally in a clowning school, Gostow says. “He gets to bring the emotive and physical aspects of clowning to the craft of improv, so that’s super exciting.
Gostow knows firsthand how important the festival’s panels can be, as he started his relationship with ImprovBoston as part of an attending improv group. “I actually was a participant in the festival when I was a senior in college, and it was at this panel that I met my now-boss, Mike Descoteaux, who’s the artistic director, and that was kind of my in, Gostow says. Maisy Halloran, a junior at University of Massachusetts Amherst and a member of Mission: IMPROVable, has attended the festival since her freshman year. “It’s great because you meet lots of other college kids who are interested in the same things you are, and it’s just an awesome bonding and networking event, and also it’s just wicked fun, she says. Thirteen shows are open to the public throughout the weekend, culminating in the finals on Saturday. While the competitions take several different forms, Gostow says that he especially enjoys the line game competition. “It’s one of my favorite competition rounds,
because we have like 100 students in the same room and they’re just making up these jokes, and it’s infectious, the energy in the building, he says. Gostow adds that ImprovBoston uses a broadcasting service that will allow the team’s nonlocal friends and family to watch a live stream of the shows at home. While Gostow says that Boston is still not one of the premiere cities for comedy, he has noticed an increase in its prevalence. “I think there’s more opportunity now than there ever has been, he says. “There’s so many theaters around town, so many independent little organizations popping up and giving people stage time in the city. In addition to being a weekend of learning and laughter, Gostow hopes that the festival will show students how they can make a career out of their passion. “We’re trying to show them that improv is not something you need to stop once you graduate your college improv troupe — it’s something that can continue on much, much longer after that, he says.

jobs education HOW TO GET AHEAD
Single this Valentine’s Day? Try these five professions Are you in a field where workplace romance thrives? ALIZAH SALARIO @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Apparently, Cupid didn’t get the memo that business and pleasure don’t mix. According to Bloomberg Business, which draws on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey, people are likely to marry within their field in a handful of professions. Grade school teachers lead the pack, followed by actors, veterinarians, sewing machine operators and air traffic controllers. That last one is perplexing, unless you’re familiar with the sexy airport-based ’90s sitcom “Wings.” The data breaks the teacher-hot-for-teacher thing down even further. Among women who marry other women, for instance, the most com-
mon matchup is between an education administrator and a teacher. The Community Survey data aligns with a 2015 study, which found that 16 percent of people in education marry someone else from the profession.
Trends in “intermarriage” Teaching is fascinating because it’s an anomaly: There’s typically earning parity among genders, unlike many of those who marry outside their profession. For “intermarried” couples in different fields, there are some surprisingly retrograde trends. For instance, high-earning women in law and medicine tend to marry their economic equals, while low- and middle-income earning women tend to “marry up” with higher earners. Question: If male CEOs marry their secretaries, then why do female CEOs marry other CEOs? Where are the female CEOs
married to their male administrative assistants? And why are so many male truck drivers married to sewing machine operators — and not the other way around? It’s no shocker that remakes of Jane Austen novels like “Clueless” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” modernizing the “Sense and Sensibility” marriage plot, have been popular of late: Based on the data, even in 2016 nuptials still have economic underpinnings.
Data-driven dating The data also may have practical applications for those looking to go about dating more systematically. For instance, male tech gurus and male fitness/ recreation instructors are a common marriage match. If you’re a guy in software development who dates other guys, then perhaps you should be hitting up the gym. Who knows? Maybe swiping right is out, and using data to drive your dating strategy is in.

The perks and pitfalls of working from home Remote work is on the rise. Here are a few ways to make the most of your home office. AMANDA PEREZ @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Dreaming of trading the corner office for a home office? You’re not alone. Some 3.7 million people work from home at least half the time, according to Global Workplace Analytics, and 50 percent of American jobs could be done remotely, at least part of the time. But working remotely may not be all it’s cracked up to be. When making the transition from cubicle to kitchen table, it can be a challenge not to lose office productivity when you lose the office. Here are a few tips
to avoid the pitfalls of working remotely.
Draw a line between work and play Maintaining clear working hours is important for successful remote work, but when your home is your office, it’s easy to forget to unplug. On the other hand, if a friend calls you during work hours, it’s harder to find a reason not to pick up. “Set a clear schedule for your working hours and don't deviate unless you have no other choice,” says freelance writer Leigh Shulman. Joe Lazauskas, editorin-chief of Contently, says, “At home, you can justify taking an hour break to watch Netflix because you figure you’ll just work a bit later. That’s a slippery
slope. When I was freelancing a bunch in 2012, ‘Friday Night Lights’ almost ruined my life.” Maintaining a work schedule ensures you keep up productivity.
Anyone out there? If you’ve spent years commuting to an office, working from home may seem like a dream come true. However, there’s a downside: losing touch with the office and feeling disconnected from co-workers. Kristin Shaw, a freelance writer who has been working from home since 2008, suggests that, “If you are part of a team at a corporate office, be sure you’re talking regularly to people in your office base either on the phone or via videoconferencing.” Making time to go in to see your boss

We’re all at the mercy of technology, and even more so for those using the family computer for work. Shaw’s advice for remote workers: “Find a freelance IT professional nearby who can scrub your laptop of any extraneous stuff that is slow-
In some cases, you can write off your home office expenses. Deductions are based on the percentage of your home you use for business, but restrictions apply, so check out the IRS guidelines. You can
also get a deduction if you use a separate space like your garage as an office. Lazauskas suggests co-working spaces, which “can be totally worth it in added productivity.” Companies like WeWork offer co-working spaces with desks and offices for rent. Prices range from $200 to $900 per month, depending on location.

The next career frontier: robotics A program in mechatronics creates future possibilities — and new jobs. ALIZAH SALARIO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Driverless cars? Pizza delivered by drone? This isn’t “Total Recall. In one of the nation’s first master’s programs in mechatronics and robotics, students are learning to bring cutting-edge innovations into our everyday lives. The program is part of New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, where Vikram Kapila, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, says students will have the opportunity to break new ground in an age of innovation. “It’s very relevant to students’ professional interests and highly relevant for the startup economy, he says. “We’d hope for the Steve Jobs or Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg of robotics to come out of our program in the next five years. The term “mechatronics was coined by Japanese engineers in the late 1960s as an increasing number of products were fusing the mechani-
cal and the electrical, says Kapila. There are numerous mechatronics and robotics programs abroad, but the NYU degree is one of the first of its kind in the nation. Mechatronics is already a part of our daily lives, from thermostat chips that measure temperature to air-bag technology. Students learn programming, electrical circuit theory and mechanical design, and get hands-on experience building in a maker’s lab. Students are encouraged to cultivate a sense of social responsibility. In Kapila’s “Robotics for Disabilities course, for instance, students are working on a cartoon-like robot that uses facial expressions and body posture to show emotions like joy and fear, drawing from research that shows people with autism respond well to cartoon characters. For students like Sai Prasanth Krishnamoorthy, who suggests robots will be a part of our daily life within the next decade, the possibilities are endless. “This revolution demands a class of engineers who are ‘makers,’ he said.

Manning situation alarming The alleged crime is bad and the alleged cover-up is just as bad. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
Peyton Manning made it through the first 18 years of his NFL career with not a sniff of off-field controversy. In the past two months, however, arguably the most popular athlete in North American sports has dealt with allegations of HGH use and sexual assault. The latter was brought to light this past weekend by the New York Daily News after simply being a longstanding Internet rumor. Columnist Shaun King says in the piece that Manning’s clean-cut image is a complete fabrication and is built on lies. King makes public 74 pages of court documents that USA Today received in 2003 but never released. The most damning allegations against Manning involve him sexually assaulting a widely respected athletic trainer at the University of Tennessee, Jamie Naughright, in the mid-1990s. From the Daily News piece:
In the fall of 1994, Peyton Manning entered the University of Tennessee football program as the already-famous son of legendary college and pro football star Archie Manning. That semester, his first on campus, some type of incident involving Manning and Naughright occurred. By request of the counsel of Peyton Manning, the details of that incident have been sealed and three-and-a-half pages concerning it have been redacted from the permanent record. Whatever happened, Naughright claims it colored and informed the professional interactions between Naughright and Manning from that time on and caused Manning to consistently harbor anger toward her. Yet in spite of the drama, Naughright served as the medical director for the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 1995 and was a member of the training staff for the Olympics trials for the 1996 Games in Atlanta. To say that her problems with Peyton Manning boiled over in 1996 would be understating it. On Feb. 29 of that year, Naughright, at that point the university’s director of health and wellness, was in a training room, examining what she thought might be a possible stress fracture in Manning’s foot. At 6 feet, 5 inches, his feet dangled off the edge of the table. Manning allegedly then proceeded to scoot down the training table
against hers.

while Naughright examined his foot. At that point, she said, he forcefully maneuvered his naked testicles and rectum directly on her face with his penis on top of her head. Shocked, disgusted, and offended, Naughright pushed Manning away, removing her head out from under him. Within hours, she reported the incident to the Sexual Assault Crisis Center in

What’s next? The statutes of limitation in Tennessee have expired here and Naughright has already settled a defamation lawsuit with Manning. Manning won his second Super Bowl title just last week as quarterback of the Denver Broncos. He is expected to retire soon. With so much heat on him currently, regarding not only this Daily News column, but the NFL’s investigation into his alleged HGH use — expect Manning to attempt to avoid any grandiose retirement party. It’s worth noting that both the HGH story and this Daily News column were published on holiday weekends, with not as many eyeballs focused on the daily news cycle. ESPN did not report on the Daily News column until 24 hours after the fact.

Knoxville. According to the court records, Manning initially denied the incident ever took place. It was a calculated risk. He was the star quarterback, a Heisman trophy hopeful, and a likely No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. While Naughright was now a respected member of the staff, Manning was the star, the savior of Tennessee football. It was his word
King also goes into great detail in the piece about how the Manning family has attempted to cover-up the incidents. King says that the Manning family made stuff up out of thin air in order to lower Naughright’s credibility. Soon after the alleged sexual assault, records show that Manning told the school, “I have never approved of Jamie’s vulgar language. It has always been my opinion, along with the majority of the team, that Jamie wants to be one of the guys.” The Daily News piece continues: To his father, he concocted far worse lies that were torn apart, one by one, when he and others were forced to testify under oath. He told his father, Archie, “she’s kind of trashy,” and “had the most vulgar mouth of any girl he’d ever seen” and “was unattractive but had big breasts” and had “been out with a bunch of black guys” and “had a toilet mouth.” According to the records, attorneys for Naughright drilled person after person, staff member after staff member, asking them to identify an instance where they heard Naughright use vulgar language. Not a single person could do so. One after another,
those who claimed she was promiscuous admitted under oath that they didn’t have any evidence to support such claims. Instead, everyone, to the person, claimed they had just heard such charges from somebody who heard from somebody that it might be true. No one with firsthand knowledge testified to her ever being vulgar or having sexual relationships with student athletes.
