Southeast Asia requires 3,750 new aircraft worth $550 billion in 20 years from 2015, a senior Boeing executive told a press conference ahead of the Singapore Airshow that starts on Tuesday. Of this, 76 percent will be for single-aisle aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice-president for Asia Pacific and India sales at Boeing. REUTERS
At least 23 civilians were killed when missiles hit three hospitals and a school in rebel-held Syrian towns on Monday, residents said, as Russian-backed Syrian troops intensified their push toward the rebel stronghold of Aleppo. Fourteen people were killed in the town of Azaz near the Turkish border when missiles slammed into a school sheltering families fleeing the offensive and the children’s hospital. Bombs also hit another refugee shelter south of the town and a convoy of trucks, another resident said. REUTERS

A Virgin Atlantic flight heading to New York returned to London Heathrow airport on Sunday after a “laser beam incident,” the British airline said. The company said in a statement that it had returned flight VS025 to London Heathrow Airport as a precautionary measure shortly after take-off when one of its pilots was taken ill following the incident. A Kentucky lawmaker fed up with anti-abortion laws in her state has introduced a bill that would require men seeking erectile dysfunction drugs to visit a doctor twice, get a note from their wives and swear on the Bible to be faithful. Representative Mary Lou Marzian, a Democrat from Louisville who has been a lawmaker for 22 years, told Reuters on Monday the bill is symbolic but she is glad that it has gotten attention because she is trying to make a point about government intrusion. Cardone said they would gradually lay off the workers involved — 10 to 20 per month during 2016, and 20 to 30 per month in 2017. About 1,000 Cardone employees will remain in Philly in the company’s headquarters and electronics division. SAM NEWHOUSE

Record books aren’t the best tenants for our sports memories — and neither are ticket stubs. It’s been nearly 50 years since the Spectrum was erected in South Philly and going on seven since it was demolished. In between, the Flyers hoisted two Stanley Cups, the Sixers won an NBA title and some of the greatest concert acts in history performed for Philly crowds. tell the story of the Spectrum.” And since Iverson played in the Spectrum as a Georgetown Hoya, he would pass the test. Kay’s father was a fan of the original Flyers. He himself was a fan of the team from the Legion of Doom days. Both have coalesced together, inking their names in orange on his S. “It’s very, very cool,” he said of being able to meet so many famous Philadelphia figures. “Ron Hextall was really the only person where I froze. Growing up, he was my childhood hero.” And, surprisingly to Kay, it’s not just the fans who long for the days of the Spectrum but the performers, too. In a way, Kay’s S is a monument, perhaps the only one there is right now, that pays homage to a place where magic happened and where so many lifelong memories were created for so many people.

Kay says it’s like a second job, coming home and finding the next person to make his imprint on the monument on his metaphorical mantle. Kay never intended for this whim — making a bid to purchase the S at the Spectrum action before it was demolished — to turn into his passion. But when he hears feedback from grateful and appreciative Philadelphians, it strengthens his resolve to continue to add ink to the giant blue letter attached to his wall. “It just sparks their memories they had in the Spectrum. We all have our memories of our first concert there, first game. Hopefully every time someone hears the story they remember the times they had. It’s a shame to see some of these older buildings go down. There is nothing really out there right now to remember the Spectrum. This is hopefully the one piece keeping the memories alive.”

Stefanie McMillian says her life has been altered by the near-fatal hit-andrun in South Philly. JENNY DEHUFF @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us
As police comb Philadelphia for a renegade driver who nearly killed Stefanie McMillian and her two children in a highspeed hit-and-run, the 30-year-old mother is living in daily fear. McMillian, a mother of four, was walking her two daughters — Kaitlyn, 5, and Laya, four months — across Broad Street on the afternoon of Feb. 2 when they were hit by a fast-moving car that never stopped. She was left bloodied and unconscious on the side of the road. Kaitlyn ricocheted off the windshield of what witnesses say was a red car — possibly an older model Honda — and shattered it and the passenger-side mirror. “I want to know why couldn’t the person just stop and let us cross the street?” McMillian told Metro. “Now, for me, it’s scary because I don’t want to step out of the house anymore or cross the street or do any of that because I always have that image in my head,” she said. “If I cross the street, who is going to hit me? Who’s going to want to get me dead for no reason?” It was shortly before 1 p.m. that day when McMillian and her kids were crossing Broad Street at Dickinson Street in
South Philly when witnesses say the Honda, reportedly driven by a woman, came out of nowhere. McMillian, born and raised in West Philly, was taking Kaitlyn to a doctor’s appointment in South Philly when started to cross the road, certain Broad Street was clear in both directions. “No cars were coming, so I said, ‘Kaitlyn, let’s go. We can go,’” she said. “Then while we were in the middle of the street, that’s when I saw the red car flying down the street and she just hit us. The next thing I knew I woke up and my husband said, ‘You’re in the hospital.’” McMillian suffered a concussion and was treated at Hahnemann University Hospital. Kaitlyn suffered a broken leg and femur and had two screws put in her right knee. Laya suffered a few scrapes. Both were treated at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania and stayed a couple days before being released. McMillian said Kaitlyn’s not able to fully use her right knee until she is examined by an orthopedic surgeon. The driver is still at large, according to police. “I feel sorry for my kids,” said McMillian. “They take public transportation. I’m always on guard. They’re doing pretty good, and if they see anything [suspicious] they tell me.” Anyone with any information leading to the arrest of the driver involved in the hit-and-run is asked to call police at 215-685-3180.

BRIEF Penn Museum mummies rattled by demolition site Mummies, a Sphinx and thousands of other artifacts at a Philadelphia archeology museum are being moved to steadier ground or monitored with vibration sensors during a demolition project next door that has put the building on shaky ground. The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, which houses trea-
sures dating to 2600 B.C., installed “supersensitive vibration sensors” to protect some of its 1 million relics during the tearing down of a neighboring parking garage and tower as part of a medical school expansion, according to a university website. As jackhammers and steamrollers rumble on, shock-absorbing materials have been added to cases housing 1,400-year-old horse figurines from China’s Tang Dynasty, and preparations are
underway to remove a pair of 500-year-old Buddhist murals, a university spokeswoman said Sunday. “Some of our more iconic pieces were installed decades ago, before special conservation techniques were implemented,” Bob Thurlow, the museum’s special projects manager, said on the university website. While Penn Museum has remained open, the Islamic Near East gallery has been closed and
the walls of the ancient Egyptian tomb chapel of Kaipure has been dismantled. The moving and shaking has triggered museum employee cellphone alerts that are sent when vibration sensors reach their thresholds, the spokeswoman said. When evening demolition work is underway, concerned staffers have camped out overnight in the galleries to keep watch over the treasures. REUTERS

Skateboarders take advantage of a largely empty LOVE Park. CHARLES MOSTOLLER
One last LOVE hurrah Area skateboarders got their last rides in at LOVE Park. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse
sam.newhouse@metro.us
When skaters from the Philly area heard that LOVE Park was going to be fenced in and broken up Tuesday, they knew they had to skate it Monday. “That’s why we’re out here today, because it’s the last day. We were like,‘We have to skate, we have to do something,’” said Jakiah Saffold, 17, from South Jersey. LOVE Park, long a hub of illegal skateboarding and a famed destination for skateboard enthusiasts from around the world, will today be permanently closed to all skateboarders and other visitors as the city begins $20 million in renovations that are expected to take about a year. The park’s iconic Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture will be temporarily removed, the famous fountain will be shut down and the entire park — which sits atop
a parking garage, which has been collecting water leaking from the fountain — will be reconstructed from a new design. The present park will be mourned by skaters, who loved it for its gently graded shallow steps in a circular formation. Last Wednesday Mayor Jim Kenney formally broke ground on the renovation and announced a temporarily lift of the skateboarding ban. LOVE Park has such fame as a skateboarding hot spot it’s even a level in the Tony Hawk skateboarding video game. More infamously, It was the sight of a violent altercation between a park ranger and a group of skateboarding teens in 2014 that left one teen jailed for nine months on assault charges. But in recent days, skateboarding groups from the West Coast and the U.K. have highlighted LOVE Park’s final days, tagging their social media posts #lastdaysoflove. “I’m kind of looking forward to the new park,” Kerrigan said. “I don’t know if they’re gonna skate-proof it when it comes back around, but we’ll see.”
“When we saw the post about the mayor letting the skaters back, it was like a dream.” Skateboarder Jakiah Saffold

BRIEF CHOP to get new garden with DNC In the months leading up to the 2016 Democratic National Convention in July, credit unions are working with the DNC and a group called RealClearPolitics to help reduce the footprint left behind from all those expected people. This spring, the Karabots Pediatric Care Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
(CHOP) will be the recipient of a brand-new outdoor garden, compliments of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and RealClearPolitics. This new Health and Wellness Garden will serve as a resource for patient and community engagement programs, including physical activities. It’s designed to serve as an area to host events, and the Pennsylvania Credit Union
Association is spearheading the $300,000 fund-raising effort to cover the costs of the project. “Credit unions have a long-honored tradition of doing ‘leave-behind projects’ in cities hosting the national conventions,” said Vicki Christner, spokeswoman for CUNA. “The goal is to ensure the space created continues to serve long after the convention leaves town … the idea is we want to
something that really leaves a good, lasting impact on the city.” CUNA and RealClearPolitics are working with the DNC in Philly and the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, to make improvements in children’s hospitals within these cities and leave something positive in their wakes. Groundbreakings at both locations are set for this spring. JENNY DEHUFF

Health inspectors have figured out what caused hundreds of students at a Philly-area college to fall terribly ill — an outbreak of norovirus. More than 200 students, faculty and staff at Ursinus College were sickened by the virus, the Montgomery County Department of Health said Monday. The diagnosis was confirmed by tests on two students performed at Phoenixville Hospital. The virus is commonly known as a “stomach bug.” “This is the agent we have suspected since this outbreak began,” Montgomery County Commissioner Valerie Arkoosh, a physician and interim medical director of the health department, said in a statement. Dining halls at Ursinus were closed last week as sickness spread through the campus population. Classes resumed Monday after being canceled last week on Thursday and Fri-
Norovirus According to the CDC, norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the country, causes 19 to 21 million illnesses, contributes to 56,00071,000 hospitalizations and 570-800 deaths every year. It is also the most common cause of foodborne-disease outbreaks.
day, along with weekend events. With the virus, which the health department referred to as “an organism,” identified, proper treatment can begin and the virus’ spread on campus is expected to be curtailed. Ursinus “officials indicated that the college has followed all health department instructions, and the illness is now expected to run its course,” the Health Department said in its press release. Norovirus typically causes diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The disease can be transmitted from “an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces,” according to the CDC. “The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed. This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea and to throw up.”

BRIEFS Two arrested in LSD overdoses at Villanova Police have arrested two freshmen from Villanova University after three individuals — including a young girl visiting the school — overdosed on LSD over the weekend. Just after midnight on Friday, police were called to the campus in response to a student acting out of control and who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The student assaulted
both a female victim and a public safety officer before being taken into custody. He was transported to a nearby hospital. Shortly after, police responded to two other incidents where they found individuals — another male student and a girl who had been visiting the school — in a type of drug and alcohol-induced state, cops said. Officers had to restrain one of the individuals. They were both taken to the hospital. One of the three individuals,
according to police, kept telling the officers he had taken LSD. All three have since been released from the hospital. Police later arrested 18-yearold Justin Yim, a freshman from Douglaston, New York. Inside the dorm room. They discovered about $9,000 in a case, 37 tabs of what seemed to be LSD hidden inside a book, drug paraphernalia, and a prepackaged envelope with marijuana — which police said seemed to
have been sent from outside the campus. Yim now faces charges of distribution and intent to deliver, along with other drug charges. His bail was set to $50,000, according to authorities. Authorities also asked anyone else who might have come into contact with the hallucinogen — which was packaged to look like cartoons and can be mistaken as candy — to turn it in to the police. Weather Watch: Frigid grip eases Brutal cold — the kind that makes your eyes tear, your face sting and your nose run — sent us running for warm cover this past Valentine’s weekend (hopefully you were wrapped around someone you truly love) and on Presidents Day we saw some snow that spread across Philadelphia and New York city during the afternoon. This lead to slick and snow covered roadways by Monday afternoon and into the early evening. Luckily the storm system producing the snow will be taking a track west of Philadelphia, New York city and Boston, putting the major metro hubs in the eastern milder flank of this developing storm and when the heaviest of the precipitation arrives on early Tuesday it will fall in the form of rain, that will come down heavy at times. Strong southerly winds will send temperatures soaring into the 50s on Tuesday meaning in some places it will actually be 60 degrees warmer than it was on early Sunday morning. Philly focus Well on the heels of the coldest air mass of the season, we have some snow to deal with, and I guess you can say not bad timing as most of us have off as we continue to defrost from this past weekend’s Polarmageddon.

Light arrived around noon Monday, and then became moderate, leading to slick roadways. Snow was expected to turn to sleet by 7 p.m., then all rain. Parts of Chester, Northern Montgomery, and Bucks likely saw between 2 to 4 inches before the mix went to all rain. Rain will be heavy at times for the entire region on Tuesday along with much warmer temperatures, into the 50s. The rain moves out later Tuesday night, setting up a dry Wednesday with readings in the 40’s. The next major shift in the atmosphere will take place during the Feb. 22 to March 1 time frame. The polar air and snow threat increases.

Republicans gear up for Supreme Court battle after Scalia’s death The next justice could tilt the balance of the nation’s highest court, which was left with four conservatives and four liberals. Republican lawmakers and presidential candidates hardened their positions on Sunday on blocking a move by President Barack Obama to fill the Supreme Court seat left by the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, a lifetime appointment that would help decide some of the most divisive issues facing Americans. The vacancy quickly became an issue in the 2016 presidential race. “We ought to make the 2016 election a referendum on the Supreme Court,” U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The normally nine-justice court is set to decide this year its first major abortion case in nearly a decade, as well as cases on
voting rights, affirmative action and immigration. Obama, a Democrat, will nominate someone to fill the empty seat but will wait until the Senate is back in session, the White House said on Sunday. “At that point, we expect the Senate to consider that nominee, consistent with their responsibilities laid out in the United States Constitution,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said. Shortly after news of Scalia’s death, Republicans vowed not to act on the vacancy until Obama’s successor takes office next January. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said failure to act would be a “shameful abdication” of the Senate’s constitutional duty. Both sides said history was on their side. Reid said it would be unprecedented to have a vacancy on the court for a year. In the modern era, the longest Supreme Court vacancy was 363 days after Abe Fortas resigned in May 1969. Republicans cited 80

WHAT NEXT AFTER ROLLICKING GOP DEBATE? Let’s face it: Some days watching politics can be like watching other people make out — sure, it’s fun for them, but what do I get out of it? Lately, however, I’ve been having a blast eyeballing this free-for-all barroom brawl that is passing for a presidential election. And I think this week may be one for the record books — here are my three things to watch.

years of tradition in which no Supreme Court nominees were approved in presidential election years. In fact, Justice Anthony Kennedy was approved in 1988, after a bruising battle in which the Senate rejected President Ronald Reagan’s first nominee, conservative Robert Bork. Supreme Court nominations are rare, so neither side has much data to rely on in determining precedents. History is also an unreliable guide as the nomination process has become significantly more politicized in recent years. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a moderate among the Republicans vying for the White House, said the Senate should wait because a battle this year would only deepen divisions in the country. REUTERS

1. Republican Punch Up: The broken bones have been splinted, and the ice packs handed out following last weekend debate; watch for the GOP’ers to roar back out on the trail looking for revenge. They’ve dropped all pretense of “never speaking ill of a fellow Republican” as Reagan urged. Trump and Cruz will keep trading body blows, the rest of the gang will keep savaging each other, and everyone will keep hoping to be the last man standing. Next trial match: South Carolina on Saturday. Expect no gloves, no surrender and no mercy until
spent a couple of months chortling at the raging Repubs, but now they’ve got a war all their own. I, for one, can’t wait to see what comes next in the increasingly fierce battle for the Democratic nomination, or as I like to call it, “Sharknado 5.” Sanders will mainly counterattack — it is his nature. But heading into the Nevada caucuses, which are also on Saturday, watch for Camp Clinton to try to bite down hard and draw serious blood. She must come out of the next contest with a solid win, or that campaign shake-up I’ve been predicting becomes a sure thing.
TOM FOREMAN Opinion CNN’s Tom Foreman is the author of the new book “My Year of Running Dangerously.”
2. Dem-olition Crew: The Democratic contenders
3. Race Relations: The most important subtext of the Democratic contest right now is the battle for minority voters. Make no mistake, this is dicey territory where the line between pandering and politicking can be very thin. Clinton has an edge, but if she tries to play it too hard it could go bad fast — with costly consequences.
a quarter Latino, was one of the states worst affected by the 2008 financial meltdown, with hundreds of thousands of families unable to pay their mortgages and forced to move in a crisis that by some estimates hit minorities twice as hard as whites. With the foreclosed homes often switching hands multiple times — from homeowner to bank to investor and back to another homeowner in just a few
years — keeping up with voters who at some point lived in those homes is difficult. The Nevada caucus has emerged as an important test of Sanders’ and Clinton’s political strength. Clinton is under pressure to keep her lead among Latinos, while Sanders must erode it to show he has a path to the nomination that does not rely mainly on the young white voters who make up the core of his support. that vote is done.
BRIEF Foreclosure crisis snarls efforts of Clinton, Sanders to reach Nevada voters Democratic presidential hopefuls Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are flooding Nevada with volunteers ahead of this week’s key nominating contest, but they face a problem — the addresses, phone numbers and other personal data they need to reach many voters are out of date. Some industry watchers had expected Internet search giant Google to be a dark horse participant in the auction. In April last year, the company launched a new wireless service that switches between Wi-Fi and cellular networks hosted through Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc.’s networks. Google last participated in a 2008 FCC auction but did not buy any airwaves. The FCC will be auctioning off valuable 600 megahertz airwaves that

Katy Perry takes Orlando with her everywhere

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani weren’t the only ones turning heads around over Valentine’s weekend. Rumored new couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom stepped out together at not just one but two pre-Grammy Awards events. First they hit up an Adele concert, outside

The following night, Perry co-hosted a Spotify bash with Bloom by her side. “They seemed to get along great, a source tells E! While Kanye West spent Valentine’s Day begging Mark Zuckerberg to bail him out, his wife was sending some cryptic messages of her own that suggest maybe all is not so peachy in the Kardashian-West household. Kardashian posted a video to Instagram of her rolling around on a rose-strewn floor as, in the background, a
haunting voice sings, “Hard to love a girl like me. I don’t blame you much for wanting to be free.â€? That’s rather troubling, no? It probably doesn’t help that the new music features lyrics calling Kardashian a bitch, hinting at divorce as an option and name-checking Ray J, her infamous sex tape partner. Charming.Â
Hey everybody, in case you weren’t sure, “The Voice cohorts Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are really, really into each other. And they want the whole world to know, primarily via excessive public displays of affection. The pair spent Valentine’s Day weekend hitting up Clive Davis’ pre-Grammys party in LA. They also danced real close during a performance by Carly
Simon and an Earth Wind & Fire tribute, then slipped out around 11:30 p.m. Hopefully to get a room.

58th annual Grammy Awards stay topical Tributes and statements liven up another safe ceremony. RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka
rachel.raczka@metro.us
The 58th Grammy Awards lived up to its hype as the only award ceremony this season with a hope of being a potential turning point. While the Oscars continues to face backlash for its continued lack of diversity, the Grammys has embraced representing what its industry has become. LL Cool J returned for his fifth year as host/dad, opening the ceremonies by suggesting memes and using his long-forgotten musical background to segue into a discussion about hip-hop’s role in the music industry. There were some complaints about his return, but he’s a fine host, managing to embarrass and alarm Kendrick Lamar by reminding the audience that his last Grammy moment featured a duet with Imagine Dragons. LL is throwing a party, and he just wants everyone to go home hap-

py. Adele is praised, RunD.M.C. awarded, the audience reminded that the Grammys are only great because of them. Speaking of which, in a black sparkly bodysuit and a brand-new bob, Taylor Swift opened the show with “Out of the Woods.
“Hello and welcome to the 2016 Grammy Awards, she says. “But right now, it’s 1989. Swift wants you to know that despite controversy and debate, this is her show. And should she win the night’s biggest awards — against favored
frontrunner Wiz Khalifa, making her the centerpiece of a thousand thinkpieces about women and race and pop music — she is still the year’s biggest performer. And the 1989 tour was great. So was “1989. Plus, Kanye West is a jerk, so maybe she does deserve to win. Next up, Kendrick Lamar took Best Rap Album right off the bat, as well as winning four during the pre-broadcast ceremony. The coveted Album of the Year naturally remains the missing piece; just give him time. This Grammys, like the last, continues to be performance-heavy, but no one seems to be complaining. The John LegendDemi Lovato-Luke BryanTyrese-Meghan Trainor tribute to Lionel Richie was fantastic. Pairing the incredible Andra Day with her fellow sultry, soulful singer Ellie Goulding worked better than either probably had anticipated. And Carrie Underwood and Sam Hunt continued to be the best looking people in country music. Check out Metro.us for all the winners, red carpet pics and more Grammys coverage.

Kristopher Jansma’s second novel, “Why We Came to the City,” (out today) begins at the onset of the 2008 financial crisis and centers around a group of five close friends in their 20s who moved to New York City after college.
only the least realistic of our desires, and to see if we could not learn what our failures had to teach, and not, when we came to live, discover that we had never died.” This battle of idealism and reality is explored through the ever-present motif of the city. In the book, one of the characters is diagnosed with cancer and the friends struggle through the uncontrollable illness, which is paralleled by the economic turndown.
Idealism vs. reality The book opens with a chilling inversion of “Walden,” which is telling: “We came to the city because we wished to live haphazardly, to reach for

“Neither [struggle] cares how hard you’re working, how much you deserve success, or all the things you believe when you’re young will eventually get you the things you’re after,” Jansma tells us.
Writing what he knows Jansma, whose first book, “The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards,” won the Sherwood Anderson Award for Fiction, has firsthand knowledge of both experiences. His younger sister, Jennifer, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at age 21, and later passed away in 2008. Then he lived through the recession in New York City and, like many others, feared for his livelihood. Despite the novel’s serious themes, “Why We Came to the City”
is often humorous and shows a different side of Jansma’s writing than his post-modern debut novel. “I think the beautiful little counterbalance to [the heavy themes] is that it also has this sort of warmth, this humor, which really comes in through their friendships with one another,” he says. “It’s a book about hard things happening to people, but it’s also about how they can come together as friends to get through it.”
I (sometimes) heart New York The novel reflects Jansma’s ever-changing relationship with the city, from love to alienation and back again. Jansma, who is considering moving to the suburbs with his wife and young son, explains that

his feelings toward New York City have fluctuated over his almost 13 years living there. “I didn’t hate it I guess, but I didn’t love it. I was totally overwhelmed, Jansma says of first moving to New York

What causes someone to snap? The truth about how the brain works when it comes to rage. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence
emily.laurence@metro.us
Neurobiologist Doug Fields is a typically easygoing guy. He isn’t the type of dude who would, say, lash out at another driver for cutting him off in traffic. But when he was robbed while vacationing in Spain, he completely flipped out and got in a violent fight.
We see this sort of snap in big ways and small ways every day. It dominates headlines when someone starts shooting at a public place. And we see it in smaller ways on our morning commutes. What exactly happens in the brain that causes someone to freak out? Doug Fields obsessively researched why and published his findings in “Why We Snap.”
It can happen to you “Anyone can snap given
the right provocation,” Fields tells us. Fields studied the neuro circuits in the brain and found rage triggers everyone has. “Why We Snap” outlines nine, but some of the most common ones are a life-or-death threat, threat to a loved one, threat to your home or threat to your tribe. “Our brain is wired to constantly be on the lookout for threats,” Fields says. “In response to sudden danger, we react automatically; you can’t think about it.”
Instincts aren’t always bad When it comes to rage circuits and the unconscious workings of the brain, Fields says it’s a double-edged sword. “Athletes, for example, depend on their threat detection center working,” he says. Being able to act quickly without thinking about what the “correct” response is can even be life-saving: Fields points out that soldiers in a combat zone or inner-city youth depend on it.
“We only call it snapping when the outcome is wrong,” he says. “When you look in the brain, the same circuits are activated when we say someone is heroic or ‘quick-thinking.’”
How to not react the wrong way So, how do you make sure these innate reactions make you a hero and not a criminal? Fields says the key is identifying what the trigger of your rage is. (His book gives
an easy-to-remember mnemonic to help.) “As soon as you identify the trigger, it just goes away because you realize this is not a situation where getting into a physical battle is going to help. And so it’s not even a cognitive process involved, other than identifying the trigger,” he says. It all comes back to biology: “The triggers are designed to protect you. They are not bad. What you have to do is identify the trigger.”

Villanova, Temple Big 5 match has Are the Owls capable of an upset Wednesday against the No. 1 team in the land? JON MARKS @MetroPhilly
sports@metro.us
Being No. 1 throughout the land might be new for Villanova, which solidified its hold on the top spot Saturday by slogging past pesky St. John’s 73-63 while Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 were all losing last week. But when the Wildcats trek into North Philadelphia Wednesday to play Temple, it won’t be the first time Owls’ have been in this position. On Jan. 2, 2010, No. 1 Kansas came to the Liacouras Center to take on Fran Dunphy’s then No. 19-ranked Owls. “It didn’t go well,” said longtime sports information director Larry Dougherty, recalling the Jayhawks’ convincing 8452 win.

deep enough to survive on nights when they’re playing at more of a “C” level. Against Chris Mullin’s 7-19 Red Storm, which has dropped a school record 16 straight, Nova shot miserably from beyond the arc (0-for-11 in first half, 4-for-19 for the game) and turned it over 15 times. But thanks to big man Daniel Ochefu’s career high 25 points, they survived their second test since hitting the top spot. Wright knows, though, they’re asking for trouble if they keep playing like this. “Taking care of the basketball’s been a problem for us,” said Wright, whose club overcame subpar performances from leading scorer Josh Hart, Ryan Arcidiacono and Kris Jenkins to grind past St. John’s. “We’ve been sloppy with the ball. We’ll address that. We know we have to keep getting better.” Especially facing a Temple team brimming with confidence, know-

Still, the anticipation on campus has been building all week, though Dunphy made certain not to mention the “V” word to his players until Sunday’s 77-65 win over 5-21 South Florida was completed. That made it five straight for 16-8 Owls, who hold a half game lead over SMU in the American Athletic Conference at 10-3. Meanwhile, everyone else has been talking about the Wildcats. “On campus everyone’s talking ‘Beat Villanova! Beat Villanova!’” said sixth man Daniel Dingle, who drained three 3-pointers in less than two minutes as Temple closed with a 21-4 tear to rally past Connecticut 63-58, Thursday. “After that game, we’ll focus on Villanova.” “It’s gonna be exciting,” added Quenton DeCosey. “Villanova. A Big 5 game. We’re gonna have to play our ‘A’ game to beat them.” Because the 22-3 Wildcats are good enough and

a little of everything Big 5 classic The Wildcats have had the better of the Owls in the last two matchups, but Temple triumphed the two years prior to that. In all, Villanova holds a slim 3129 series advantage: 2014-15: Villanova 85, Temple 62 2013-14: Villanova 70, Temple 74 2012-13: Temple 76, Villanova 61 2011-12: Temple 78, Villanova 67 2010-11: Villanova 78, Temple 74
ing this could make their season. “It’s a spectacular opportunity, said Dunphy, whose club has made a habit of pulling out games with late rallies like it did against UConn. “They’re No. 1 in the country, a city school which has had a terrific program over the years. The challenge will
be great. Then again, the opportunity will be great. They’re so solid throughout. A terrific defensive team which can go on one of those rolls and hit shot after shot. I think it’s great for the city they are where they are.â€? A win would give Villanova its third straight outright Big 5 title and 23rd overall, stretching its Big 5 run to 14 in a row — the last 11 by at least 14 points. But should the Cats falter, it would create a three-way tie for city honors with the Owls and 21-4 St. Joseph’s at 3-1. Regardless, the Wildcats, who hold a two-game lead in the Big East at 12-1 over 22-3 Xavier with a showdown in Cincinnati a week from Wednesday, have long since punched their ticket to the NCAA’s Big Dance. With Flyers’ playoff hopes on life support, team needs wins The Flyers continue to see any chance of a successful 2015-16 slip away. EVAN MACY @evan_macy
evan.macy@metro.us
The Flyers were hoping to get four points last weekend. They got one. Sitting a half dozen points out of the eighth playoff spot in the East — with Michael Del Zotto sidelined indefinitely with an upper body injury — Philly is bruised, battered and running out of time. If they can’t return to their winning ways and show signs of life by the end of the month, the season could end early for Flyers fans. The team was embarrassed in New York Sunday in their 3-1 loss to the Rangers, this a day after an equally detrimental

overtime setback at home against the Devils. “Huge games — basically four-point games and we need to win those,” Mark Streit said following the Sunday setback.

against the Devils and Cory Schneider. It is a big one for Philly, a team that has lost each of their last four games against Metro opponents. “Our goal is to make the playoffs,” Flyers rookie Shayne Gostisbehere, who extended his record pointscoring streak to 12 games Sunday, said. “Nothing is going to change until we get there. It’s how we respond now. We have to turn some negatives into positives.” With the NHL Trade Deadline looming on Feb. 29, there is limited time for the Flyers to show they are buyers before the team (potentially) turns their attention on 2016-17. After their game in Jersey, the Flyers have two days off before embarking on a three-game road trip. They’ll head to Montreal, Toronto and Carolina before a six-game homestand beginning February 25.

MACNOW: WILL 76ERS FANS EVER BE REWARDED? THE SPORTS PROFESSOR
GLEN MACNOW @RealGlenMacnow
An article the other day ranked the NFL’s mosttortured fan bases. Not surprisingly, the Cleveland Browns took first. A similar poll of the NBA would be even simpler. No fans in pro sports suffer as much as Sixers loyalists. The team will end 2015-16 with a declining record for the fifth straight season. That ignominious feat has occurred just twice since 1990, once by the Sacramento Kings and the other time . . . by the post-Barkley, pre-Iverson Sixers. The “Trust the Process
Army” clings to the hope that this thing turns like a boomerang. Their fingers are crossed that Joel Embiid finally heals, that Dario Saric finds his passport, that a real point guard turns up. A few trades, a lucky break or two and Sam Hinkie gets his statue erected right next to Wilt and Dr. J at the sports complex. Of course, the key to that entire plan is winning the draft lottery. All these years of playing for pingpong balls ought to pay off with at least one No. 1 pick. And what better year to show up last in the standings (thus first in the lottery odds at 25 percent) than this one, when LSU freshman Ben Simmons is prepped to come out? Simmons is a 6-foot-10 guard with incredible
court vision and rebounding ability. He is considered that once-a-decade talent capable of turning around a franchise. He’ll only improve as he matures. And to the local Tank-a-Palooza flagcarriers (just to clarify, I am not among them), he alone would justify the five seasons of hell they’ve endured. But wait. Just as those starved and patient loyalists stand to get their reward, here comes the NCAA trying to bollix the whole thing. As John Smallwood reported in the Daily News last week, college sports’ governing authority is going to give players attending this year’s draft combine in May a 10-day grace period to pull out and retain their college eligibility. It’s

a well-intentioned idea, designed to help any kid who comes to realize he might not be drafted. But that 10-day period overlaps with the May 17 lottery. And that gives Simmons the leverage to pull out if he doesn’t like the team that wins rights to the first pick. Would he snub the Six-

ers? Who knows? But we do know the franchise’s (read: Hinkie’s) reputation is poor among players and agents.
