President Barack Obama launched a final push Tuesday to persuade Congress to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but lawmakers, opposed to rehousing detainees in the United States, declared his plan a nonstarter. In White House remarks, Obama pleaded with the Republican-led Congress to give his proposal a “fair hearing.” He said he did not want to pass along the issue to his successor next January. REUTERS

Time Inc. has been exploring a bid to acquire the core Internet business of Yahoo Inc. for several weeks, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Tuesday. Time Inc. has been reaching out to bankers on pursuing a deal with Yahoo, according to the source, who wished to remain anonymous because they were not permitted to speak to the media. It is unclear if the company has retained an investment bank as financial advisor on the potential bid. Yahoo officially launched the sale of its core business last week. REUTERS

Mars Inc. has recalled chocolate bars and other products in 55 countries, mainly in Europe, after a piece of plastic was found in a Snickers bar in Germany. All of the recalled products, which include Mars, Snickers and Milky Way bars, were manufactured at a factory in Veghel, Netherlands, according to a Mars spokeswoman. They were sold in European countries including Germany, France and Britain, and in certain countries in Asia. REUTERS

Manchester, Connecticut, police told WHDH no arrests have been made in a Sunday night fight at a birthday party because the group departed before police arrived at the scene. “Part of the problem is people had left prior to our arrival, so right now we’re still trying to identify all of the participants,” Capt. Christopher Davis told NBC. “We will continue our investigation … and take appropriate action.” Anyone with information about this incident should contact Manchester Police at 860-645-5500. Protesters gather over FBI order Demonstrators say they aren’t pro- or anti-Apple, but oppose the government’s request to unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

spencer.buell@metro.us

The debate over whether Apple should help the government unlock a mass shooter’s iPhone landed in Boston on Tuesday. Protesters in the city joined those in other states to demonstrate outside the Apple store on Boylston Street at 5:30 p.m., waving smartphoneshaped banners and signs reading “Don’t Break Our Phones.” Evan Greer, the Bostonbased national campaign director for the nonprofit Fight for the Future, which organized the rally, told Metro the action was

not about one company, one brand of phone or one individual’s device. “These rallies are about opposing a very dangerous order that the government has made that stands to put millions of people in harm’s way,” Greer said. “This isn’t about whether you like Apple. … It’s about a precedent that could undermine safety.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook has spoken out against a court order demanding the company help the FBI gain access to the device owned by Syed Rizwan Farook, the man who, along with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 people in San Bernardino in December. Both were killed by police. The FBI has asked Apple to write software that

would override programming that keeps phone passwords protected. The agency has said it needs to access the phone as part of its investigation into the killing spree. Opponents of the move and civil liberties advocates worry that creating that feature could make users vulnerable to government monitoring or cyber attacks.

“While we believe the FBI’s intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products,” Cook wrote in a Feb. 16 open letter to Apple’s customers. “And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect.” David Segal, executive director for the national grassroots group Demand Progress, echoed those sentiments in a statement ahead of the rally. “Apple’s stand today will help keep security threats at bay,” Segal said. “But we will all be less safe if the FBI succeeds at its politically expedient but shortsighted approach. Our devices will become more vulnerable and the sensitive data they hold will be more accessible to people who want it for malicious purposes.” The FBI has said too

much is being made of the government’s request of the technology giant. “We simply want the chance, with a search warrant, to try to guess the terrorist’s passcode without the phone essentially self-destructing and without it taking a decade to guess correctly. That’s it,” FBI Director James Comey wrote Sunday on the blog Lawfare. “We can’t look the survivors in the eye, or ourselves in the mirror, if we don’t follow this lead.”

BRIEFS Attleboro drug lab discovered when cook gets sick o his own meth Authorities found a residential meth lab over the weekend when they arrived at an Attleboro home in response to an overdose call. Robert G. Acheson Jr., 52, complained to authorities that his heart was racing, and he was treated at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where he

was arrested after treatment on Sunday afternoon, according to a police report cited in the Sun Chronicle. “He attempted to try it after he made it, and it made him sick,â€? Assistant District Attorney Mary-Elizabeth Mack said during the bail hearing, according to the Sun Chronicle. After oďŹƒcials transported Acheson to the hospital, residents around his triplex

unit on Knight Avenue were evacuated while authorities took stock of everything in the home, WCVB reported. A hazmat crew, DEA agents and a bomb squad were all called. “It’s extremely volatile, the products involved,â€? Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney said to WCVB. “If the so-called cooker doesn’t know what he’s doing,

it could cause a tumultuous explosion.â€? Police Chief Heagney, an oďŹƒcer in Attleboro for 17 years, said it was the ďŹ rst meth lab discovered during his time on the force, the Sun Chronicle reported. The Boston Uber driver accused of assaulting a 21-year-old woman in his car in 2015 has been convicted. Abderrahim Dakiri, 31, of East Boston, who had been charged with indecent assault and battery, waived his right to a jury trial, Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley announced Tuesday. He was found guilty of assault and battery, a lesser charge. A judge sentenced him to two years of probation, according to the district attorney’s office. He has also been ordered to stay away from his victim. According to prosecutors, Dakiri was working with the ride-hailing service when he gave his victim and a few of her friends a ride in the early hours of Feb. 8, 2015. After dropping off the woman’s friends on Tremont Street, Dakiri “placed his hands on her against her wishes and despite

Police later used the woman’s phone and “additional information from Uber to identify Dakiri as her assailant, and arrested him that same day, prosecutors said. The victim in this case is one of two who are suing the ride-hailing company over its hiring practices, according to the Boston Globe. SPENCER BUELL

Pa. fracking trial begins, pitting families against driller The action is one of the first lawsuits alleging water contamination from the process to reach a jury. Cabot Oil & Gas Co. contaminated drinking water for two Pennsylvania families in its rush to begin fracking operations during the state’s natural gas boom, a lawyer told a federal jury in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday at the start of a civil trial. Leslie Lewis, who represents two families from the town of Dimock, told a six-member jury that Cabot had shown “reckless disregard” for the safety of her clients and other local residents. But Stephen Dillard, a lawyer for the Houstonbased energy company, said in his opening state-

ment that the town’s groundwater already contains naturally occurring methane and that experts would testify humans cannot be harmed by methane-laced water. “The issues they have are cosmetic and aesthetic,” Dillard said. “Those can be treated, but it’s not toxic.” Dimock figured prom-

inently in the 2010 Oscarnominated documentary “Gasland,” which examined the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to extract natural gas from underground shale formations. The movie showed tap water in Dimock that could be set on fire due to the methane it contained.

Scott Ely and his wife, Monica Marta-Ely, and Ray and Victoria Hubert are seeking compensatory and punitive damages from Cabot. They are the last of about 40 plaintiffs who sued Cabot in 2009; the others have settled with the company. U.S. Magistrate Judge Martin Carlson rejected Lewis’ request to introduce a bottle of coffeeand-cream colored water drawn from the Ely well Tuesday morning as evidence. He said the deadline for submitting new exhibits had passed and that jurors could view photos of the turbid water already in evidence. Dillard told jurors scientific evidence would show there is no underground pathway between nearby gas wells and the families’ water wells. The trial is expected to last two weeks. REUTERS

Clinton aides to be questioned under oath on emails, judge orders A federal judge ruled Tuesday that State Department officials and aides to Hillary Clinton should be questioned under oath about whether the former secretary of state’s private email system was an effort to skirt openrecords laws. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan ordered the State Department and Judicial Watch, the conservative watchdog group suing the department for records about the employment of a senior Clinton aide, come up with a plan for the depositions and other discovery by April. Clinton is vying to become the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate ahead of the election this November. Her use of a private server in her New York home for her government work is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Department’s internal watchdog and several Republicancontrolled congressional committees. Last year she apologized for the setup, several months after it

came to light last March. She said she broke no rules. The State Department said it was reviewing the order but could not comment on ongoing litigation. The department may appeal the ruling. Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch’s president, called the ruling “a major victory for the public’s right to know the truth about Hillary Clinton’s email system.” His group will propose that the testimony include former State Department officials, and may also seek to have Clinton give testimony. The Michigan Uber driver charged with murdering six people switched vehicles after sideswiping a car at the start of the shooting spree, authorities said Tuesday, adding that they hoped his phone would help establish a motive for the killings. It also was revealed that the driver, Jason Dalton, visited a gun shop shortly before the rampage and bought a heavy duty jacket that could conceal a small pistol. Dalton, 45, was denied bail Monday after a court hearing in which a detective testified that he admitted to the five-hour shooting rampage over the weekend in Kalamazoo, Michigan, about 150 miles west of Detroit. While Dalton is a regular customer who usually spends time chatting with the staff, he bought the jacket and left the crowded store within about 10 minutes, said the employee, who asked not to be identified. North Korea warns against US, South Korea military exercises North Korea warned on Tuesday of harsh retaliation against South Korea and its ally the United States, which are preparing for annual joint military exercises next month amid heightened tensions following the North’s nuclear test and rocket launch. The North calls the annual exercises preparations for war and routinely vows to retaliate. “All the powerful strategic and tactical strike means of our revolutionary armed forces will go into preemptive and just operation to beat back the enemy forces to the last man if there is a slight sign of their special operation forces and equipment moving to carry out the so-called ‘beheading operation’ and ‘high-density

strike,’” the Supreme Command of the Korean People’s Army said in a statement carried by state media. It said its first target would be South Korea’s presidential Blue House, while U.S. military bases in Asia and on the U.S. mainland would be its secondary targets. About 28,500 U.S. troops are based in South Korea. Last week, South Korean President Park Geun-hye warned of tough measures against the North following its January nuclear test and its long-range rocket launch this month, saying Pyongyang’s pursuit of nuclear weapons would speed the collapse of the regime. South Korea and the United States say both actions were violations of U.N. Security Council

resolutions, and are pushing for further sanctions. Days after the rocket launch, South Korea suspended the operation of the Kaesong industrial zone just north of the border, which had been run jointly with the North for more than a decade. REUTERS

BRIEFS Colorado woman convicted of cutting fetus from stranger’s womb A Colorado jury on Tuesday convicted a woman of attempted murder and assault for stabbing a pregnant stranger and cutting her fetus from her womb, after luring the victim to her home with an online advertisement for free maternity clothes. Dynel Catrece Lane, 35, was also found guilty in a Boulder courtroom of a charge of unlawfully terminating a pregnancy stemming from the March 2015 attack on Michelle Wilkins, 27. Wilkins, who was seven months pregnant, survived the stabbing at Lane’s home in Longmont, 30 miles north of Denver, but Wilkins’ unborn baby girl died. The case renewed discussion of whether termination of a pregnancy can ever be considered murder. Prosecutors filed a charge of unlawful termination of a pregnancy, and not murder, against Lane after the Boulder County Coroner ruled the unborn child was a fetus rather than a baby because it had not taken a breath outside the womb. Rick Snyder, a Republican, plans to sign the bill, which had been passed unanimously by the state’s House last week. “The safety and well-being of Flint families remains our top priority,” said Snyder, whose administration has faced harsh criticism for its response to the contamination crisis in the city of about 100,000 residents. As a cost-cutting measure in 2014, Flint switched its water system from Detroit to a local river. The more corrosive water from the river leached lead from water system pipes, leading to unacceptably high levels of lead in hundreds of homes. The funding would provide Flint residents credits to cover residential water bills from April 2014 through this April or until the water is clean, Snyder’s spokeswoman Laura Biehl said. Flint residents have been using bottled, rather than tap, water because of the lead contamination. Snyder said the state will work with city leaders on how the credits are applied. Children are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which could cause developmental problems. REUTERS

Eddie Redmayne takes British humility too far How humble is Eddie Redmayne? So goddamn humble. For example, he’s nominated for an Oscar for “The Danish Girl,” but is he about to suggest he might win for Best Actor two years in a row? Of course not! “[Leonardo DiCaprio is] definitely going to win — and should,” Redmayne tells the Telegraph’s magazine. “I feel excited just to be invited to the party, frankly. For me to be considered in the group of nominees, with [Matt] Damon, DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender and Bryan Cranston — it feels amazing.” OK, fine, we get it, Eddie. You’re so modest. Stop bragging about how modest you are. But yes, this is totally DiCaprio’s year.

Winter is Trumping Sometimes I think it would be great if Donald Trump would just pack up his divisive, dangerous rhetoric and take it someplace else, but then I remember that other people live in other places and I feel bad for them. Like the residents of Westeros, who,

while they’ve done some pretty terrible things, don’t necessarily deserve the Trump treatment. Well, they’re getting it anyway, thanks to this enterprising mash-up video. You would think that given the rampant violence and political backstabbing so common in Westeros, Trump would seem a bit mild by comparison. You would be wrong.

@Miles_Teller You don’t get more than one “Bless You.” I don’t care how many times in row you just sneezed.

Chloe Moretz thinks you’re afraid of being a feminist Hey gals, 19-year-old actress Chloe Grace Moretz is calling you out. While campaigning for Hillary Clinton in Nevada recently, the “Carrie” and “30 Rock” star tried to rationalize what’s plaguing other young women in her age group. “There are a lot of young women who are terrified of being feminists,” she tells Yahoo News. “Young women are afraid to stand up for who [they] are because we still live in a world in which it’s not OK for us to be young, powerful, strong, well-spoken, educated young women. And that’s why we need Hillary in office.” Take that, Bernie Bros. Now, whether you agree with Moretz on her choice of candidate to back, she does make some pretty interesting

subjects, and if I was a man no one would question it. They would say, ‘Wow he’s a go-getter.’ Whereas with a young woman, it’s a bit polarizing and it’s scary to see that with someone who is 5’5” with blonde hair and probably doesn’t weigh more than 115 pounds.” Terrifying? I think it’s kind of cool.

And look who’s chiming in now: Chelsea Handler, who doesn’t mince words when it comes to Mr. Kim Kardashian. “I’ve always thought he’s a maniac, and he just sounds like more of one,” she tells ET Canada. “He’s always been delusional. He’s acted like this for years and now people are acting surprised that he’s acting like this.” So what’s behind all the recent outbursts, according to her? “He’s probably trying to be funny. He thinks that’s funny,” she offers. “He’s unstable and he’s delusional. And now he’ll have a mental breakdown in front of everybody, even though he’s been in this state for years.” Sounds like a blast.

Comedian and actor Paul Rodriguez hasn’t worked with Will Smith since the 2001 biopic “Ali,” in which Smith portrayed legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and Rodriguez had a small role as Dr. Ferdie Percheo — and there’s a good reason for that. “I’d never work with him again. He was an a—hole,” Rodriguez tells San Di-

ego’s Rock 105.3 during an interview. “There was no cause to insult me or berate me. I’m no angel, but I didn’t have it coming this time.” Talk about holding a grudge. When asked why Smith might have been so testy with him, Rodriguez speculated that it could have had something to do with the “steroids he was using.” So there’s that.

Meet Anya Taylor-Joy, star of ‘The Witch’ The young actress breaks through as a teenage Puritan beset by evil spirits and her family. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

It sounds heavy: shooting your first movie — the horror indie “The Witch” — in the woods of remote Ontario. “I really should have been more concerned about going,” says star Anya Taylor-Joy with a laugh. “I had just turned 18, I was going to be alone with no Wi-Fi, no cell service and I’m going to be making this really, really bizarre movie. But it never entered my mind. I was just like, ‘I’m going!’”

GETTY IMAGES

The acclaimed film stars Taylor-Joy, now 20, as Thomasin, a teenager in a Puritan family who take up in a cabin on the edge of a forest. There, they find their worst fears coming true: Evil exists, in the form of a frightening witch who first takes the family’s newborn then comes back for the rest of them. Taylor-Joy was born in Miami, but she’s never lived in the States. Her family immediately relocated to Argentina before moving to London when she was 6. “I did not enjoy that decision. Now as an adult I can say, ‘Thank you so much, you gave me so many opportunities,’” she tells us. She even refused to learn English for her first two years there, but she thinks that wound up helping her acting. “I can’t help but mimic people,” she explains. “If I’m in a room, I will pick up on the way people are speaking and I will go there. It’s not a choice. That’s great for movies.” In person, Taylor-Joy is very friendly and chatty (she describes herself as “a very extroverted introvert”), qualities she had to tame while playing Thomasin, who’s quiet and not sure what to make about adolescence — which, given their old-time religion, winds up making her family think she’s in leagues with the villain. “Everything about being a Puritan — to me, anyway — seems to be going against what it means to be

human. You’re trying to tamp down your most base human instincts,” Taylor-Joy says. “Thomasin is so withdrawn and conflicted, because people didn’t talk about puberty in those days. While the family is very afraid of her, she doesn’t know what the hell’s going on, either. No one’s saying, ‘Honey, you’re experiencing hormones, this will pass in awhile.’” Inevitably, “The Witch” reminds us how, even today, we oppress women. Though she says there’s still more progress to be made with gender rights, she’s been pleasantly surprised that many of the scripts she’s been sent since “The Witch” debuted at last year’s Sundance have featured strong female characters — which is to say with flaws and grit. “Those should not be anomalies,” she says. “The fact that I’m reading them means they’re out there. Ergo, why isn’t every girl getting this opportunity?” Taylor-Joy has already shot a big-budget film, “Morgan,” by Ridley Scott’s son Luke, and is still working on M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” opposite James McAvoy. But she knows she struck film gold with “The Witch.” “I read the script very late at night, alone in my bed. When I was done, my body collapsed in on itself. I was a nervous, frightened, anxious mess. I couldn’t articulate where it was coming from,” Taylor-Joy recalls. “That feeling I got from ‘The Witch’ is the feeling I’m going to be chasing my entire life. It’s about a compulsion to tell a story.”

Stephan James plays legendary Olympic runner Jesse Owens in “Race. FOCUS FEATURES

Jesse Owens finally gets his big movie Stephan James had to learn how to supersprint for the new drama “Race. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Getting the story of famed Olympic runner Jesse Owens to the screen has been a long time coming. For 22-year-old Canadian actor Stephan James, who played activist John Lewis in “Selmaâ€? and now portrays Owens in “Race,â€? which chronicles the lead-up to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the last stretch of waiting was extra agonizing: The film was shelved for a year. How do you wrap your head around playing such a big ďŹ gure in history — who for some reason hasn’t been explored on screen before? It’s crazy to think about it. It’s crazy that this film has landed in my lap 80 years later. But I can’t say that I’m mad that it has. Obviously it’s a big, big story to tell, [about] a guy who is essentially larger than life, somebody who changed not only the sport but the world. I’m still pinching myself every day. What was the process like for you? It started mentally and doing my research — reading some of his books,

and there are only so many YouTube clips you can find from 1936. I tried to take what I could see in terms of his interviews to see his cadences and the way he carried himself. I started physical training at Georgia Tech about two months beforehand. I was working on “Selmaâ€? at the time in Atlanta, and every off day I had, I was training to be Jesse for “Race.â€? For me, it was not just about running fast but running like him. How fast did you end up getting? I got pretty quick. I think was doing the 100 [meter] in just over 12 seconds or something like that. So, yes I got pretty fast. I found it fascinating how much restraint he had to show in all of these situations, which is understandable given the time period but frustrating to watch for a modern viewer. It’s part of what makes him so great — the fact that he was able to show restraint and be reserved in certain situations and let all those feelings and emotions be expressed through his running. It’s tough as

an outsider to look at it and see the way it went, but you try to be accurate in telling the story. Was it tough to look into that period historically, given how things were for African-Americans? Obviously, when you’re in these situations you have to immerse yourself in that time. So for me, it was about feeling like we were actually in Ohio [where he went to school] in 1935, or in Berlin in 1936. And, yeah, some of that stuff is difficult to digest, but again they’re very real things and we didn’t try and shy away from that.Â

Opera on Tap at The Burren Feb. 28, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Burren, 247 Elm St., Somerville, RSVP on EventBrite.com Nurse your hangover with some live opera this Sunday in The Burren’s back room in Davis. Opera on Tap, a non-proďŹ t that fosters live performances by students of opera, will present Puccini and pancakes for their last show of the season. The show titled “Missed Connections and other Anti-Valentine’s Day Songsâ€? (slightly late, but we’ll take it) and will feature live opera inspired by the Craigslist missed connections section.

Before Ellie Tiglao started her Filipino pop-up venture, PAMANGAN!, she worked in neuroscience. “It wasn’t for me for many reasons, she says. “But I love science and the processes of discovering and exploration and innovation around it. The 30-year-old California native found a similar mindset in the culinary world. “A lot of it is unexpected [and] about wanting to push the boundaries and bring more knowledge, she adds. Tiglao started PAMANGAN! (meaning “something to eat) with her brother, R.J., forming Kulinarya in 2014 as means to test the market with pop-up dinners at venues like Fuel America and Journeyman. Now living in Cambridge, Tiglao is pursuing consistent efforts for PAMANGAN! including monthly events at Aurum in Jamaica Plain and Ames Street Deli in Kendall Square. R.J., a former chef, lives full-

time in San Francisco and works in IT, but returns for the events. “We’re pushing to open a restaurant, explains Tiglao. “The neighborhoods are up in the air, but we’re looking at Cambridge. The concept would be more casual, with tapas and drinks. PAMANGAN! has two seatings at Aurum on Feb. 29 with a tasting menu featuring Lechon Kawali, a roasted pork belly with a persimmon and walnut barley salad, and a deconstructed Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert with housemade ube (purple yam) ice cream. The events feature the Tiglao siblings’ takes on Filipino cuisine inspired by their upbringing (their father was a chef, their grandfather a baker), but the a focus on education and community transcends the menu. “We’re trying to make the food accessible — while repping the flavors in a way that feels accurate so people who come can experience nostalgia.

If you go MARIMLA AT MAPALI! Monday, Feb. 29, 6 p.m. & 9 p.m. Aurum Pies 377 Centre St., Jamaica Plain $60 for dinner + cocktail, bit.ly/eatďŹ lipinofood

Tiglao says the goal of PAMANGAN! includes fostering connectivity of food, from the farms that grow the ingredients to the waitstaff who serve each plate. Most dinners also feature communal seating, so guests can converse over what’s on the table and experience the meal together. She says, “I’ve found in Boston, we approach food in a way where we see it as fuel. We want to help people look at it as a way to slow down and appreciate the people that are sitting across from them as much as they appreciate the food that’s on the table. RACHEL RACZKA

city holiday. Not only is the competition fierce for leases, the 24-hoursonly influx leaves many residents scrambling for moving companies and U-Haul rentals at the same exact time. “I think it’s a combination of students and families who like to get in for an August or Sept. 1 move because they want to get in a school system,” says Michael Sylvia, founder of South Boston’s Terrier Real Estate. “I don’t know why that’s just how it is, and we just accept it.” But what if you have to move … like, now? It could be difficult to find a lease that doesn’t ask you to extend your stay the extra months to divert you back to an Aug. 31 move out, and often the pick of the litter isn’t available without picking up someone else’s lease break. But there are some potential upsides to straying the path, too. Here’s some advice for how to find an apartment during the off-season.

Do your digital dirty work If you’re hunting without the help of a realtor, there are plenty of online resources to scan for immediate or non-Sept. 1 move-in dates. “The first place to look is Multiple Listing Service, which is most

comprehensive database of listings,” says Kevin Concannon, a buyer specialist at the Steven Cohen Team in the South End. “It kind of goes outward from there. There could be some gems on Zillow or Trulia because some are posted there exclusively. It can be a little hit-or-miss.” And of course, there’s good old fashioned Craigslist. “High risk,” admits Concannon. “[There’s] everything from scams to some [listings] that might not even be real.” Though he adds, “Some may seem too good to be true, or [they could be] posted by a little grandmother who doesn’t know better. But there are a lot of sketchy Realtors.”

Know you have the upper hand Hey, landlords want to get back on the cycle just as bad as you do. The Sept. 1 move date also naturally affects the amount of potential tenants coming into the market, so a lease break or an early move might leave a landlord with unrented property until an off-season seeker comes along. Sylvia says landlords not only like Sept. 1 move-ins because it puts them at the advantage of being able to ask premium rates, but also because they know the market is flush with potential tenants.

“There’s less inventory to choose from when you’re not moving on Sept. 1, but there’s also less [potential renters] applying. So with less competition, you’ve gained leverage. I’m seeing tenants negotiating deals and discounted rents [now], rather than paying market,” he notes. “Like if asking price in September is $3,000, you might be able to get it to $2,800.”

Accept the inevitable In case you have to take over someone else’s lease or snag from a lease break, you could be faced with a lease that’s longer or shorter than 12 months as most landlords will be eager to get back into the Sept. 1 groove. “I recommend getting back on the cycle,” advises Sylvia, reminding folks that playing nice and agreeing to an extended lease can land you on the good side of your future landlord, leading to easier and favorable negotiations. However, he also advises to be wary of lease breaks, noting they could throw a wrench in your agreement. For example, Sylvia says, you could end up relying on the current tenant to pick up the slack for a rent break you’re receiving. And no one wants bad rental karma.

With Chris Young now on the Red Sox’ payroll, center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. stands to lose some playing time.

GETTY IMAGES

Sox need to be flexible in outfield The Red Sox have already made a key decision when it comes to Jackie Bradley Jr. and Chris Young. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

Normally, competition during spring training is a good thing for all involved, but for the 2016 Red Sox, there just aren’t many positions up for grabs. The Red Sox made a commitment to going with three younger players in the outfield in Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo. They then went out and signed Chris Young as the fourth outfielder, but it wasn’t known just how much playing time Young would get. Well, before spring training even officially started, that question was answered. “He’s going to get every left-handed pitcher we see,” Sox manager John Farrell told reporters. “Every left-handed starter. In

fairness to Chris, there’s got to be some at-bats against right-handers along the way to keep some timing, but it’s clear his strength is against lefthanded pitching. We’re also about what’s the best combination on the field, what’s the best lineup to attack that starter any given day.” Farrell also said he doesn’t want to move any of the outfielders around, so on the days Young plays, he will play center field over Bradley Jr. and Betts will stay in right. Young, a pure righthanded bat, does hit left-handed pitching much better than righthanded pitching. He’s a career .263 hitter against lefties, compared to just .223 against righties. Last season there was a huge difference as the 32-yearold hit .327 against lefties and .182 against righties. Obviously it makes sense to get Young playing time against left-handed starters, but why will it always be Bradley Jr.? What if Bradley Jr. is on a hot streak? Will he still be benched if there is a lefthander on the mound?

While the splits make sense for Young, it doesn’t make as much sense for Bradley Jr. For his career, the lefty actually hits better against left-handers, as he’s a career .238 hitter against lefties and .200 against righties. Last year, the South Carolina product was much better against lefties than righties as he hit .306 against lefties and .221 against righties. This isn’t to suggest Bradley Jr. should play every single day no matter who is on the mound, but based off those splits it doesn’t always need to be Bradley Jr. sitting when Young plays. Young has played all three outfield positions. He isn’t strictly a center fielder, so if need be he can be moved around. It also just doesn’t make much sense to already declare specific jobs for the season before spring training even begins. What happened to some position challenges during the spring to earn playing time once the games begin to count? After all, competition is a good thing, not a bad thing.

NBA power rankings | by James Toscano No. 1

Warriors (50-5) Congratulations go to the Golden State Warriors, who became the fastest team in NBA history to reach 50 wins in a season. This can’t be a surprise to anybody who’s watched them play this season. The Bulls’ single-season win record is well within reach for this group.

No. 2

No. 10

No. 8

Spurs (47-9)

Cavaliers (40-15)

Clippers (37-19)

Pacers (30-26)

Hawks (31-27)

After getting spanked by the Clippers, 105-86, following the NBA All-Star break, the Spurs beat the lowly Lakers and Suns. The problem with those two victories is that they allowed 113 and 111 points, respectively. It’s so unSpurs-like, but then again, it is just the regular season.

The Cavaliers ended up hanging on to Kevin Love at the NBA trade deadline despite swirling rumors. That only means the rumors will kick back up again in the offseason. But until then, Love should help this team. He had a 29/11 game last time out.

The Clippers will take a split with the top dogs in the West as they beat San Antonio by 19 but then lost to Golden State by three. That was followed up by a 40-point shellacking of the Suns. That about sums up where all these teams are at.

The Pacers play their next three games at home and have a chance to move up to the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference by the end of next week. Either way, they look to be in better shape than the Heat, Hawks and Bulls.

So, the Hawks didn’t trade Al Horford or Jeff Teague but made everyone in the league aware that they were both on the trade block. Bold strategy and it’ll be interesting to see what this does to team morale. They’re a top-10 team here, but their title odds are amazingly low.

No. 11

No. 9

Raptors (37-18)

Thunder (40-16)

Celtics (31-22)

Blazers (29-27)

Mavericks (30-27)

The Raptors creep up to No. 3 from No. 4 in this week’s power rankings and they’re looking like a group who can actually make the NBA Finals. Assuming last Friday’s loss in Chicago was nothing but a little rust out of the break as they then pulled off two double-digit victories (including a 27-point beatdown of the Knicks).

They’re still among the handful of teams that could win a title, but two straight losses at home is an ugly stretch for any team. One of those defeats was to the Cavs, in which OKC lost by 23 points. It won’t get any easier for Kevin Durant and Co. with games against the Warriors and Clippers coming up.

The Celtics somehow stand pat at No. 7 despite a disappointing 1-2 road trip. Boston really should have went 2-1 at worst on the swing (we’ll give the Jazz some credit). There’s no doubt that Brad Stevens’ group plays hard, but sometimes they don’t play hard enough for the full 48 minutes.

Whoa, where did these guys come from? They were No. 16 in our rankings last week. The Trail Blazers are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, led by All-Star snub Damian Lillard. They’ve won five straight games and 10 of their last 11. Lillard’s backcourt buddy CJ McCollum is really stepping up for Portland, too.

The Mavericks have a great chance of passing the Grizzlies in the Western Conference playoff standings as they trail Memphis by three games but play the next eight of nine at home. Just three of those games are against current playoff teams. For bench help, they added David Lee this week.
