President Barack Obama launched a final push Tuesday to persuade Congress to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but lawmakers, opposed to rehousing detainees in the United States, declared his plan a nonstarter. In White House remarks, Obama pleaded with the Republican-led Congress to give his proposal a “fair hearing.” He said he did not want to pass along the issue to his successor next January. REUTERS
Time Inc. has been exploring a bid to acquire the core Internet business of Yahoo Inc. for several weeks, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Tuesday. Time Inc. has been reaching out to bankers on pursuing a deal with Yahoo, according to the source, who wished to remain anonymous because they were not permitted to speak to the media. It is unclear if the company has retained an investment bank as financial adviser on the potential bid. Yahoo officially launched the sale of its core business last week. REUTERS

Mars Inc. has recalled chocolate bars and other products in 55 countries, mainly in Europe, after a piece of plastic was found in a Snickers bar in Germany. All of the recalled products, which include Mars, Snickers and Milky Way bars, were manufactured at a factory in Veghel, Netherlands, according to a Mars spokeswoman. They were sold in European countries including Germany, France and Britain, and in certain countries in Asia. REUTERS

Ben Carson’s comments that President Barack Obama was “raised white” prompted backlash on social media on Tuesday, with many users criticizing the neurosurgeon for stereotyping the experience of African-Americans. Carson grew up poor in Detroit in the 1960s, said of Obama in a podcast posted on Politico’s website, “He was, you know, raised white.” He added, “I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but … he didn’t grow up like I grew up.” REUTERS

Researchers at Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital have developed a rapid test for the Zika virus that can produce results in a matter of hours. The test can speed diagnosis and treatment, the hospitals said in a statement. “With travel-associated cases of the Zika virus becoming more prevalent in the United States, coupled with the looming increase in mosquito exposure during spring and summer months. Several tornadoes cut a swath of damage across southeast Louisiana and Mississippi on Tuesday, injuring at least a dozen people, knocking down a water tower, and destroying homes and businesses, according to forecasters and emergency officials. More severe weather was expected as the storm system moved east, forecasters said. Weather officials were tracking more than a dozen reports of tornadoes in the region on Tuesday afternoon, said Mike Efferson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in New Orleans. REUTERS

McCoy’s treatment by Philadelphia DA raises eyebrows Williams objects to accusations of “preferential treatment.” SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

A law enforcement figure is sounding off about the relationship between LeSean McCoy and the District Attorney’s office, raising questions about “preferential treatment” for the football star. The comment, from Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby, came in an interview with CSN Philly, pub-
lished Tuesday. McNesby called it “bizarre” that McCoy and Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams reportedly met together before the issuance of arrest warrants. “If that’s not preferential treatment,” McNesby told the outlet, “I don’t know what is.” But Williams’ office fired back on that claim. “Anytime an attorney wishes to have their client reach out to us, we do that,” a spokesman for Williams said, according to CSN reports. “That’s part of our investigation. This is not an issue of preferential treat-

ment. This is an issue of conducting a thorough investigation.” McCoy faces charges for his role in a fight outside a Philly nightclub Feb. 7. He is among four men accused of brawling with two off-duty officers outside the Recess Lounge nightclub in Old City. The incident, which sent the officers to the hospital,
was reportedly the result of an argument about a bottle of champagne. Questions remain about the altercation and the conduct of the police officers involved. Police previously said the officers were “jumped,” while a source close to McCoy told the Buffalo News that it was one of the officers who instigated the fight.

PHILADELPHIA
BRIEF Sorry, but no weed at the Philadelphia Flower Show For those who were hoping that this year’s Philadelphia Flower Show might showcase some ganja, all your hopes were dashed as the show has canceled any such shenanigans, Philly.com reported. The annual Philadelphia Flower Show, which claims it dates back to 1829, usually showcases “an amazing world of great gardening and design,” which
apparently does not include weeds — of any variety. However, Philly NORML, a local legalization group, claimed differently and even published a post announcing their debut at this year’s floral festival. This, according to show spokesman Alan Jaffe, just wasn’t true. “They told the people that coordinate the booths in the marketplace that they would not have any advocacy materials regarding legalization of marijuana
[at] the show, so they accepted the application. They misrepresented what they’re going to do,” Jaffe told Philly.com. “We’ve told them they can’t be part of the flower show.” According to Jaffe, the group promised that it was going to stay apolitical. The NORML blog post that announced their show debut though, said otherwise: “This is a ground-breaking
opportunity for all cannabis activists to reach and educate a huge number of influencers. We’re cooking up some prime educational pieces, we’ll be rolling out a statewide decriminalization initiative, we’ll be converting skeptics, and educating people who have only ever known ‘reefer madness.’ Prohibition’s time is over, and your participation could help immensely.” MATTHEW LEE

New study reveals how likely you are to lose your keys New Yorkers are almost twice as probable to get locked out compared to Bostonians. ANGY ALTAMIRANO @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us
Getting locked out of your home can really put a huge damper on your day, however a new data study shows that it happens more often than you think. New York Citybased KeyMe — a cloudbased locksmith that allows users to store, share and duplicate physical keys using a digital scan on their mobile devices — released data Tuesday on lockout trends throughout the nation. The information in KeyMe’s study is based on user data from the service and third party statistics from leading U.S. data providers. According to the data, men are 36 percent more likely to get locked out than
women while single people are 15 percent more likely to get locked out than married individuals. More than 51 percent of all lockouts happen in the afternoon hours and 29 percent of them take place on Saturdays — with 21.8 percent of lockouts happening on Sundays. KeyMe was also able to highlight the number of people who get locked out in Philadelphia — 657,128 residents annually. Each year 533,279 residents get locked out in Chicago; 105,395 residents in Dallas; and 49,464 in Boston, according to the report. New York City had the largest number of the five cities with 1,912,780 residents getting locked out of their homes per year. According to KeyMe, residents in Manhattan’s Lower East Side have a 43 percent chance of getting locked out in the next 12 months, with Chelsea residents running a chance of 36 percent.

‘LOVE’ statue moved to Dilworth Park Sightseers will now have to look for “LOVE a little further southeast, as riggers on Tuesday moved Robert Indiana’s iconic statue to Dilworth Park in preparation for LOVE Park’s renovation. The steady process of moving the statue to the northwest corner of City Hall took no more than five minutes, according to city officials, who wanted to keep it in close proximity to where its permanent home will be in a year — back at LOVE Park in front of a brand-new bigger, bubbling fountain. “It’s such a point of attraction for residents and visitors, we wanted to make sure it was accessible and nearby, said Philadelphia Public Art Director Margot Berg. She said the statue will remain outside City Hall for about a year during the revamp of LOVE Park. It’ll then be completely restored and repainted and brought back to its original site. JENNY DEHUFF

Uber driver swapped cars during rampage Authorities say Dalton had no prior criminal record. The Michigan Uber driver charged with murdering six people switched vehicles after sideswiping a car at the start of the shooting spree, authorities said Tuesday, adding that they hoped his phone would help establish a motive for the killings. It also was revealed that the driver, Jason Dalton, visited a gun shop shortly before the rampage and bought a heavy duty jacket that could conceal a small pistol. Dalton, 45, was denied bail Monday after a court hearing in which a detective testified that he admitted to the five-hour shooting rampage over the weekend in Kalamazoo, Michigan, about 150 miles west of Detroit.Â
“He’s in here enough for me to know he talks to the guys about guns and different stuff. Jason Dalton KALAMAZOO
Gun shop employee
COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT.
Less than three hours before the first shooting occurred on Saturday evening, Dalton and a friend visited Southwick’s, a gun shop he frequented in nearby Plainwell, a shop employee told Reuters. While Dalton is a regular customer who usually spends time chatting with the staff, he bought the jacket and left the crowded store within about 10 minutes, said
the employee, who asked not to be identified. Searching for a motive for the violence, investigators are now focusing on a gun and a cell phone seized from Dalton and reports that he drove fares for the Uber car-hailing service in between the shooting episodes, said Paul Matyas of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department. REUTERS

Pa. fracking trial begins, pitting families against driller Cabot Oil & Gas Co. contaminated drinking water for two Pennsylvania families in its rush to begin fracking operations during the state’s natural gas boom, a lawyer told a federal jury in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday at the start of a civil trial. Leslie Lewis, who represents two families from the town of Dimock, told a six-member jury that Cabot had shown “reckless disregard” for the safety of her clients and other local residents. But Stephen Dillard, a lawyer for the Houstonbased energy company, said in his opening statement that the town’s groundwater already contains naturally occurring methane and that experts would testify humans cannot be harmed by methane-laced water. “The issues they have are cosmetic and aesthetic,” Dillard said. “Those can be treated, but it’s not toxic.”
Dimock figured prominently in the 2010 Oscar-nominated documentary “Gasland,” which examined the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to extract natural gas from underground shale formations. The movie showed tap water in Dimock that could be set on fire due to the methane it contained. Scott Ely and his wife, Monica Marta-Ely, and Ray and Victoria Hubert are seeking compensatory and punitive damages from Cabot. They are the last of about 40 plaintiffs who sued Cabot in 2009; the others have settled with the company. U.S. Magistrate Judge Martin Carlson rejected Lewis’ request to introduce a bottle of coffee-and-cream colored water drawn from the Ely well Tuesday morning as evidence. He said the deadline for submitting new exhibits had passed

and that jurors could view photos of the turbid water already in evidence. Dillard told jurors scientific evidence would show there is no underground pathway between nearby gas wells and the families’ water wells. The trial is expected to last two weeks. REUTERS

Clinton aides to be questioned under oath on emails, judge orders A federal judge ruled Tuesday that State Department officials and aides to Hillary Clinton should be questioned under oath about whether the former secretary of state’s private email system was an effort to skirt openrecords laws. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan ordered the State Department and Judicial Watch, the conservative watchdog group suing the department for records about the employment of a senior Clinton aide, come up with a plan for the depositions and other discovery by April. Clinton is vying to become the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate ahead of the
election this November. Her use of a private server in her New York home for her government work is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the State Department’s internal watchdog and several Republicancontrolled congressional

The State Department said it was reviewing the order but could not comment on ongoing litigation. The department may appeal the ruling. Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch’s president, called the ruling “a major victory for the public’s right to know the truth about Hillary Clinton’s email system.” His group will propose that the testimony include former State Department officials, and may also seek to have Clinton give testimony.

Eddie Redmayne takes British humility too far How humble is Eddie Redmayne? So goddamn humble. For example, he’s nominated for an Oscar for “The Danish Girl,” but is he about to suggest he might win for Best Actor two years in a row? Of course not! “[Leonardo DiCaprio is] definitely going to win — and should,” Redmayne tells the Telegraph’s magazine. “I feel excited just to be invited to the party, frankly. For me to be considered in the group of nominees, with [Matt] Damon, DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender and Bryan Cranston — it feels amazing.” OK, fine, we

Chelsea Handler diagnoses Kanye West as a ‘maniac’ Everyone has an opinion about Kanye. And look who’s chiming in now: Chelsea Handler, who doesn’t mince words when it comes to Mr. Kim Kardashian. “I’ve always thought he’s a maniac, and he just sounds like more of one,” she tells ET Canada. “He’s always been delusional. He’s acted like this for years and now people are acting surprised that he’s acting like this.” So what’s behind all the recent outbursts, according to her? “He’s probably trying to be funny. He thinks that’s funny,” she offers. “He’s unstable and he’s delusional. And now he’ll have a mental breakdown in front of everybody, even though he’s been in this state for years.” Sounds like a blast.

Hey gals, 19-year-old actress Chloe Grace Moretz is calling you out. While campaigning for Hillary Clinton in Nevada recently, the “Carrie” and “30 Rock” star tried to rationalize what’s plaguing other young women in her age group. “There are a lot of young women who are terrified of being feminists,” she tells Yahoo News. “Young women are afraid to stand up for who [they] are because we still live in a world in which it’s not OK for us to be young, powerful, strong, well-spoken, educated young women. And that’s why we need Hillary in office.” Take that, Bernie Bros. Now, whether you agree with Moretz on her choice of candidate to back, she does make some pretty interesting

Like father, like son Kiefer Sutherland is beyond happy “Forsaken” gives him the chance to finally really act with his father. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Kiefer Sutherland can name one of his most restless nights of sleeping: the one before he had to act for the first time with his father. In “Forsaken,” the actor, 47, and his dad, Donald, play estranged father and son. Inevitably the combination of heavy scenes and his pop’s legacy got to him. “The second we started working it all went away,” Kiefer tells us. “There’d be moments in a scene when I was looking in my real father’s eyes and there was no need to suspend my belief. It was real on some level, and quite cathartic. It’s something I’ll carry with me till I die.” In the film, Kiefer plays a gunslinger who returns home from the Civil War cured of his need for violence. Despite changing his ways, his father, a local pastor, remains furious
with him. Making things worse are local ne’er-dowells (led by Brian Cox) who have been stealing land by force, all but ensuring that Kiefer’s John Henry Clayton will turn Jack Bauer — eventually and reluctantly. “Forsaken” reunites Kiefer with someone else: director Jon Cassar, who helmed 59 episodes of “24.” John Henry could be read as the anti-Jack Bauer: a dangerous man who doesn’t want to unleash his darkest impulses. But subverting his screen persona wasn’t what drew him to the project. “My initial interest was to do a film with my father,” Kiefer explains. “He’s done so much extraordinary work and he’s someone I’ve had great respect for as an actor. It just took me 38 years to get into a place to do this.” “Forsaken” isn’t the first movie to feature both Sutherlands. They were in “A Time to Kill,” though not at the same time, and Kiefer did a bit

Though they’ve been in the same movies before, “Forsaken” marks the first time Donald and Kiefer Sutherland have exchanged dialogue (and played father and son). ENTERTAINMENT ONE
part in 1983’s “Max Dugan Returns,” though again they never exchanged dialogue. That film proved to be Kiefer’s screen debut, and after being nominated for a Genie, the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar, for 1984’s “The Bay Boy,” he headed to Hollywood to follow in the footsteps of both his father and his mother, also an actor and who split with Donald
when Kiefer was 4. “I think both of them were concerned about me [becoming an actor]. I had left school at such an early age to do it that I didn’t have a lot to fall back on, which I think concerned them the most. But I was driven to do it, and I’ll always respect my parents — once they voiced their disapproval — for letting me find my way.”

“Forsaken” returns Kiefer to the Western, a genre he started in back during 1988’s “Young Guns” and its 1990 sequel. “I think ‘Young Guns II’ is a better movie, because all of us actors were a little older,” he confesses. Those films also instilled a love for horses, which led him to become involved in rodeos, which he keeps up. He won his first roping competition in 1992, and only had to cut back in 2000, when “24” started and took over his life. Sutherland has said he has no interest in returning to the show that made him big again after a bit of a slump. If he wanted to do more rodeo, he’d still have to contend with the fact that he’s pushing 50. “Driving a horse from zero to 40 mph in two strides is a little harder on my back,” Kiefer says. But roping is still a snap. “You can actually get better at that over time. You just learn to control a rope and once you get that down it’s no different than throwing a baseball. The problem is horsemanship: As you get older, the bones start to rickety-rack a little more.”

an expensive, timeconsuming project. Sprucing them up, however, is another story. “A really effective way to change the look is to simply take the doors off and have open shelving, says Coben. “Invest in some new dinnerware, and the look is modern. Just want to switch up the color? Coben recommends taking your cabinets to an auto body shop and having them spray-painted for a cheap, professional upgrade.

When he’s designing restaurants, Coben opts for the traditional rich reds, warm yellows and cozy greens. At home, however, it can pay to take a risk. “Blue is a really unexpected color because, with the exception of the blueberry, you don’t find it in the food world, he says. “You don’t usually see it in a restaurant, but for a residential kitchen, it’s a lovely choice.
‘Not your grandmother’s lobby’ Nearly a century has passed since the Benjamin Franklin Hotel opened in 1925, but the Horace Tr u m b a u e r - d e s i g n e d property, at 8th and Chestnut streets, still has physical links to the past, albeit with luxurious updates. Thanks to the $13 million restoration and renovation by Korman Communities, the building, now known as AKA Washington Square, is an upscale lifestyle-centric apartment and extended stay residence. The former hotel’s lobby, once occupied by presidents and dignitaries, was Korman Communities’ — who acquired the building in 2011 — first order of business. “It became a major focal point for us in terms of bringing the property back to life, says Kathy Rapp, senior vice president of Korman Communities. In revitalizing the lobby, the design team examined photos and renderings of the space from the 1930s through 1950s,

in addition to preserving the original ceiling. They used chemical analysis to determine the exact color of paint that was used when the building was constructed to give an authentic feel. However, they added tons of modern updates like a fountain, live music Wednesday through Saturday nights and comfortable, chic seating. “The design team did an amazing job with bringing [the lobby] back to life that incorporates today’s more modern lifestyle, says Rapp. “It’s not your grandmother’s lobby.
While the lobby is for residents and their guests only, AKA Washington Square will soon feature amenities open to the public. A restaurant — with a still unnamed big name local chef at the helm — and public lounge lobby will open late spring-early summer this year, says Rapp. Additional updates that will be open to the public include the Franklin ballroom, where scenes from “Silver Linings Playbook were filmed. “It’s the lifestyle and experience like no other in Philadelphia, says Rapp. ALLIE VOLPE

Phillies’ Nola on ‘youth movement,’ his changeup and Cliff Lee Metro sat down for a one-on-one interview with Phillies presumptive ace Aaron Nola. ED CONDRAN @MetroPhilly
sports@metro.us
When Aaron Nola was drafted seventh overall by the Phillies in June 2014, a number of pundits correctly predicted that the polished LSU product would quickly hit the majors. Nola made his MLB debut just over a year after being selected and he didn’t disappoint. In 13 starts, Nola, 22, went 6-2 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.197 WHIP with the worst team in baseball. Nola doesn’t overpower hitters. But he possesses a good
fastball and a plus curveball. Add uncommon poise and a fearlessness, which is reminiscent of Cliff Lee, and the big question is whether Nola is a top- or middleof-the-rotation starter. Metro asked Nola about the impact of the legendary hurlers, who are no longer Phillies, his development of the changeup and his approach, which is to attack the strike zone. There are some common denominators between you and Cliff Lee. You both throw in the low 90s and attack hitters. Many of your peers nibble, but who encouraged you to go at hitters like you do? I had a pitching coach at LSU [Alan Dunn]. His first year there was my first year. He taught me
some of the ropes and he said, like you said, attacking is a big thing for pitchers. You got to attack with the first pitch. A first pitch strike is one of the most important things in an at bat. You can’t nibble. You’re not going to win that way. When Vance Worley was with the Phillies, he would talk about how huge it was to have guys like Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels around. What kind of impact did they have on you last season? They had a big impact on me. I watched Cliff on TV for years. I watched him in person last year in spring training. He did a bullpen with some of the guys. His control was outstanding. The spots he hit with every pitch he

threw was incredible. You seem to share his attitude, which was “go ahead and beat me if you can.” That’s the competitive nature of Cliff Lee. I talked to guys he played with and he definitely had that “beat me if you can” attitude. He would throw it wherever he wanted, which is what I think I’m capable of. Some guys are video junkies and then there was Lee, who avoided video and went with feel. Where are you in that world? Video only goes so far. I looked at video last year since it was my first time facing guys up here. But once you face them, you get a feel for what you want to throw. I like going with

feel but a big part of that is developing a good relationship with your catcher.

Cameron Rupp raves about your potential, but he commented on how there is now a book on you and you have to make adjustments. You got to mix things up. You can’t do the same thing because the hitters in the majors will catch on. I made my share of mistakes last year and that hurt me in some games but I learned from it. I have a good relationship with Chooch [Carlos Ruiz] and Rupp. We’re going to be going over specific things that will help me get better. One of those things, according to Rupp, is
the development of a changeup to augment your fastball and curve. Did you spend much of your time during the offseason working on the change? I’ve been working on it quite a bit. I need to get that third pitch going for me. Did you speak with Hamels about it since he possesses one of the best changeups in the game? I definitely talked with Cole about his change. What did he say, aside from throw the pitch a lot since it’s a feel pitch? He said exactly what you said, “throw the change a lot.” He said that it takes a lot of

Eagles rumors: Sanchez next to get cut? 1CAB=; ;/23

time since it is a feel pitch. So I’ve thrown the change so many times during the offseason. I’m getting the feel of it. If I can have three pitches I can command, that would be really good.
How does it feel being part of the rotation in which you have the most tenure even though you’ve been with the Phillies for less than half a season? It’s weird [laughs] but that’s the way it is.
There is a youth movement here and I’m thrilled to be part of this. I think we have a great deal of talent here. I can’t wait to see how it goes this season. I think there are many reasons for optimism.

The Eagles have made a strong statement thus far during the oseason, striking deals and extensions with veterans Vinny Curry, Malcolm Jenkins, Lane Johnson, Najee Goode, Zach Ertz and Brent Celek. These moves signify a desire to compete right away, with the aforementioned players all in their mid-to-late 20s. More moves are expected to come, and according to both CSN’s Ruben Frank and Dave Zangaro, the next roster moves could be cuts. The Eagles writers, along with other sources at ESPN and other media outlets surmise that quarterback Mark Sanchez could be the next casualty. Sanchez signed a two-year, $9 million deal last oseason and letting him go would save $3 million. A Sanchez release would avail the Birds of more funds with which to bring back Sam Bradford. There has been no report of movement by any of the parties involved to get a Bradford deal done.
