BOMBER PASSED CITIZEN TEST MONTHS BEFORE DEADLY ATTACK: PAPER
1
The older of the two brothers behind the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon bombing passed a test to become a U.S. citizen three months before the attack, the Boston Globe reported on Monday. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a 26-year-old ethnic Chechen who had immigrated to the U.S. from Russia a decade before the attack, had correctly answered questions about American history and demonstrated proficiency in English. But the U.S. immigration officer who reviewed his test did not immediately approve Tsarnaev’s citizenship application. Its report was based on 651 pages of heavily redacted documents released by the Department of Homeland Security. REUTERS

A senior official from Syria’s main opposition group said on Monday that a fragile international attempt to halt nearly five years of fighting was in danger of total collapse because of attacks by government forces. The cessation of hostilities drawn up by Washington and Moscow faced “complete nullification” because Syrian government attacks were violating the agreement, the official of the Saudi-backed opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said. France said there were reports of attacks on opposition forces in breach of the deal, which came into force on Saturday, and countries backing the Syrian peace process met to try to clarify the situation. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the pause in the fighting was largely holding, despite some incidents that he hoped would be contained. The Kremlin said the process was under way, although it had always been clear it would not be easy. REUTERS
LAUNCH CANCELED AT FINAL COUNTDOWN

At the last second, Elon Musk’s SpaceX scrubbed plans to launch a Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday, again delaying an attempt to put an satellite into orbit and then land the vehicle’s first stage intact on a sea platform, a step that may eventually slash costs. The 23-story rocket, carrying a communications satellite for Luxembourg-based SES SA, was less than two minutes from blast-off at 6:47 p.m. when the launch team aborted the countdown. Musk, founder and chief executive of SpaceX, said that Air Force safety officers stopped the countdown after a boat strayed into a restricted zone east of SpaceX’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch site. MBTA to kill latenight transit service The T’s board voted unanimously on Monday to stop providing latenight transit later this month. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

The late-night T experiment is over. The MBTA’s board on Monday voted 4-0 to end its program extending service on the T to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The last night of extended hours is set for Friday, March 18 into the morning of Saturday, March 19. The move will likely come as no surprise to those following discussions about late night MBTA service over the past several months. Board members signaled as early as November they did not want to support a service they reported has seen low ridership and is costly — $13.38 per ride, compared to the subway’s daytime subsidy of $.67, according to a recent report. Late-night service also reduces the time crews have to make overnight
repairs and conduct maintenance, board members have argued. The issue was the topic of three hearings in recent weeks, but the T signaled it had either made up its mind or knew the end for the service was near when, earlier this month, schedules for T employees did not include late-night hours in March. The Boston Globe first reported that discovery Feb. 15. The T’s spokesman at the time said the omission was the most convenient way to schedule with a policy decision pending — it’s easier to add hours to an employee’s schedule than to take them away, Joe Pesaturo told the Globe. There were 80 people at the three hearings on the proposal in January. An additional 272 sub-
mitted comments online or over the phone, the T said. The T has also said long-term private sponsorship for the extended service, once thought to be a way for the nightlife and hospitality industries to kick in, never materialized. Service industry professionals who work late had been outspoken supporters of the late-night program. But for those workers, the T argued it was “an insufficient transportation alternative” because the late rides were only available two nights a week for a combined three hours, according to the presentation. “Due to the overall fiscal situation of the MBTA, the T must prioritize investment in core services; accordingly, the T cannot continue to subsidize late-

night service to such a significant extent due to the failure to attract both significant third-party funding and high ridership,” the report stated. This latest pilot program is meeting the same fate as the T’s so-called Night Owl bus service, which ran until 2:30 a.m. Launched in 2001, it was cancelled in 2005. This may not be the end of MBTA-affiliated late-night service in Boston. Boston bus-on-demand startup Bridj today went public with its plan to replace extended hours. The company has worked to position itself as a private supplement to the T’s offerings — showing up in recent months at meetings to pitch board members on a partnership. “The closure is a step backward for the residents, students, visitors and businesses who make late night a core part of their lives,” the company wrote on a website it created, which is dedicated to the proposal. “If that cut happens, we’re ready to help.” Labor groups, particularly the local Carmen’s Union, have voiced opposition to efforts to privatize parts of the T.

Rosenberg organized a Millennial Engagement Initiative, a younger-voterfocused follow-up to last year’s Commonwealth Conversations tour, the senator said in a February announcement. He picked Sen. Lesser, who according to CBS is the Senate’s youngest politician at 30 years old.
“Senator Lesser and I are passionate about making sure we’re out there, talking with young people and bringing their insights back to the Senate,” Rosenberg said in the news release. They also plan to stop by at Facebook’s Cambridge outpost, that release said.

Mike Tyson gossips about Brad Pitt and Robin Givens
Sam Smith riles the gay Hollywood establishment Oscar winner Sam Smith probably meant no harm with his acceptance speech for the Bond track “The Writing’s on the Wall, but it’s still not sitting well with other gay Hollywood power players. While accepting his award, Smith said, “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. Unfortunately for Smith, that definitely wasn’t the case. McKellen’s comments were specifically about the Best Actor category, which no openly gay man has won. Plenty
of openly gay men have won other Oscars. Including Dustin Lance Black, who won for writing the script for “Milkâ€? and is engaged to Olympic diver Tom Daley — and who isn’t too happy with Smith: “Hey Sam Smith,â€? Black tweeted, “if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancĂŠ.â€? Oh, damn. That’s rough.

It’s never too late to spill some secrets on famous exes, right? At least that’s what a mildly embarrassed Mike Tyson assumed when he stopped by to visit the ladies of “The Real and unloaded an anecdote about the first time he met Brad Pitt — because Pitt was coming home to get busy with
Tyson’s soon-to-be ex-wife, Robin Givens. Awkward, no? “I didn’t really catch them in the act. Maybe right before the act, Tyson offers. “I was driving, and before going to my divorce lawyer I decided to go by the house that we lived in and get a rump session before I went to my lawyer. Everybody
does that before they get divorced. They do? Learn something new every day. Anyway: “When I saw her car coming I thought it was her and one of her girlfriends from the show, but it’s not. It’s a guy. And then I got mad — and of course I’m jealous at that time. A little bit now.
Leo’s Oscar date? His trusty vape pen
@AZEALIABANKS It’s getting to a point where I’m seeing and hearing so much about these candidates that I’m starting to despise each & every one of them.
@HaileeSteinfeld I’m so freaking excited
It was pretty much a given that after finally getting his Oscar, Leonardo DiCaprio was going to be wrapping his lips around something in celebration. And it turned out to be his trusty vape pen. The “Revenant star was spotted puffing up a storm at a party hosted
at Ago restaurant in L.A. following the awards, according to TMZ. But he carefully pocketed it before heading outside to face the paparazzi. Luckily he had some other accessories to distract him. When DiCaprio and his posse departed the restaurant, someone rushed out
to the SUV to bring him both an Evian bottle filled with suspiciously un-water-like liquid and his Oscar statue, which had been left inside. That was close.

MUSIC
A case for Neko Case The venerable artist discusses her careerspanning box set. MARGARET H. WILLISON
letters@metro.us
Neko Case needs no introduction. The 45-yearold musician’s career is one to marvel at: lending her vocals to the beloved Canadian indie rockers, The New Pornographers; spanning genres, from country to experimental, as a multi-decade solo artist. Case released “Truckdriver, Gladiator, Mule,” an eight-record catalog of her solo work from ANTI Records in late November. She chats how the set came to be and how she’s grown as an artist — oh, and that time she guest starred on “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.”
What does it feel like to be a musician with a career long enough to justify a retrospective box set? It feels pretty surreal. Apparently, people don’t usually do this until like, they die. People keep being like, “Why did you do that?” and I’m like, “Because I didn’t know I couldn’t do that, basically.” It only spans my own solo career, so there are all kinds of other stuff I’m working on getting together for later. One aspect of releasing this box set is spending time with recordings from very early in your career. Are there any songs from that early period that you’re especially excited to revisit? It was really nice to go back and revisit things off “The Virginian,”

actually change the key. So songs like “Duchess,” for example, is in a key I could not really sing in, which is kind of ridiculous. Now that I’m playing it live, I can change it into a key I can actually sing.
That must be really satisfying. Yes and it’s embarrassing, but it’s one of those things where you’ve just got to own it. I realized I was pretty much learning in front of my audience and I’m OK with
A lot of your songs depict you as kind of a genderless force of unruliness. But, when your voice is used in other people’s projects, it’s often cast as hyperfeminine, like when you played a siren on “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.” What is it like having this dichotomy in how you understand yourself and the response your voice produces in others? How does that inform your writing? Well, sometimes I write songs from the perspective of characters. In fact, that’s what I usually do; they’re usually kind of stories. And, if they’re about me, they’re generally kind of genderless or at least gender-slippery. For “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” I was just going to do whatever they said. They could have told me to be a paramecium and I would have been like “Yeah! Let’s do it!”

How your workout affects your mood The Nalini Method creator Rupa Mehta tells us how transforming your mind can also transform your body. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence
emily.laurence@metro.us
For most people, hitting the gym or heading to a yoga class is mostly about the physical benefits. But 17-year fitness instructor Rupa Mehta has created a whole workout that helps makeover your mind as well as your body. “There’s a mindbody connection, she says. “We carry emotional weight as well as physical weight. Mehta explains that it’s easy to get obsessed with physical weight, but people often ignore the words and thoughts they digest that can weigh on your mind. It’s why she wrote “7 Workouts For 7 Moods. We get the lowdown from her here.
Mind
Body
“I can’t tell you how many times I hear people say, ‘I’m too pissed to work out,’ she says. “Your mood really affects your workout. Mehta created seven different workouts for seven different moods to help people channel their emotions during their workout to give the body and mind something beneficial. You can literally work through your problems and find solutions while you work out. Each workout, outlined in her book, has a different mantra to keep in mind throughout the duration. For the “doubt workout, for example, the mantra is, “No one can take away your happiness. For the “anger workout, the mantra is, “The solution is born before the problem. “It forces people to see that they are their own teacher and they can motivate themselves, Mehta says.
The workouts are a mix of yoga, Pilates, strengthtraining and barre moves, timed to be 25-minutes and structured to be something you can do anywhere, without any equipment. It’s essentially a mood-reflecting flow. “The ‘happiness workout’ is bouncy and also gives you the meditative space to say ‘thank you,’ Mehta explains. The “anger workout is designed to get your adrenaline going and channel your energy, and get rid of all that heavy emotional weight, something Mehta says can be even more effective than getting your frustration out through something like boxing. “Boxing is awesome, but while you might get the adrenaline out, you aren’t focused on finding solutions and [emotionally] connecting, she says. “Going deeper in the mind-body connection is really owning the mood and by owning it, you become emotionally lighter.

Bruins land a pair of new faces at deadline Boston also held on to star forward Loui Eriksson. MATT BURKE @burke_metro
matthew.burke@metro.us
The Bruins acquired a pair of players just prior to Monday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline as they boosted their beleaguered defense and added another offensive threat. Boston landed defenseman John-Michael Liles from the Hurricanes and forward Lee Stempniak from the Devils. Liles has six goals and nine assists on the season and is an 11-year NHL veteran. He began his pro career with the Colorado Avalanche before moving on to Toronto and then Carolina. Stempniak is the big-
ger name as he gives the B’s more scoring pop. The 33-year-old winger has posted 16 goals and 25 assists so far this season. Stempniak is the definition of an NHL journeyman as he has played for the Blues, Maple Leafs, Flames, Penguins, Jets, Rangers and Devils. The B’s gave up a 2016 third-round pick, a 2017 fifth-rounder and prospect Anthony Camara in exchange for Liles. They gave up a reported second- and fourth-round pick for Stempniak, a high price considering the B’s nearly signed Stempniak prior to the start of the 2015-16 season for the league minimum. “We wanted to continue to add to this hockey club,” Bruins GM Don Sweeney said fol-
lowing Monday’s trade deadline. “I felt the draft situation and relinquishing some of those [picks] in order to acquire someone of Lee’s versatility with the type of year he’s having will complement our group very well. He can play in a bunch of different positions for us.” The Bruins did not pull the trigger on a Loui Eriksson trade as the team still hopes to re-sign the winger soon. Without a new deal, Eriksson will become a free agent this summer. “We’ve been in contract negotiations and we will continue to be with Loui and his group,” Sweeney said on Monday. “I’ve always valued Loui, and the season he’s having is very important for where our club is. And if the deal

wasn’t going to be right, we were going to maintain our position. If you look around the league, I don’t think any team in a playoff position traded a player of Loui’s magnitude. So, the deal had to be right. It had to be right for this organization.” Sweeney’s inaction on Eriksson and the addition of two veteran players suggest that the Bruins believe they can make a run in this spring’s Stanley Cup playoffs. The B’s (34-236, 74 points) have the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference but eighth-place Pittsburgh has just three less wins and four less points on the season than Boston. The B’s will be back in action at the Garden tonight (7, NESN) against the lowly Flames (26-31-4, 56 points).
Lee Stempniak was having a monster campaign with the Devils before being traded to the Bruins on Monday. GETTY IMAGES
