OHIO SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT DENIES CHARGES IN JUVENILE COURT
1
The 14-year-old suspect in a shooting at a southwestern Ohio high school that left four students wounded denied the charges against him on Tuesday, according to a juvenile court official. James Austin Hancock appeared in court with a lawyer for an arraignment hearing and entered a “not true” plea, equivalent to a not guilty plea, to two counts of attempted murder, two counts FACEBOOK of felonious assault and one count each of inducing panic and making terroristic threats, Butler County Juvenile Justice Center Director Rob Clevenger said. Hancock was ordered to return to a juvenile detention center, where he has been held since Monday, when he was arrested after the incident in Middletown, about 38 miles north of Cincinnati, officials said. A pretrial hearing was set for April 5. REUTERS
PENTAGON TO TAP PRIVATE INDUSTRY FOR BACKGROUND CHECK

The U.S. Defense Department plans to hire private contractors to develop a $600-million-plus computer system for a new background check agency being set up after a security breach last year exposed the personal data of nearly 22 million people, a top official told Reuters. The Pentagon plans to meet companies and request proposals before Sept. 30, the end of fiscal year 2016, after finalizing requirements for a more flexible and adaptive replacement, said Richard Hale, the Pentagon’s deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity. BIN LADEN DOCUMENTS SHOW A SUSPICIOUS, PRESSURED AL QAEDA

Al Qaeda’s leaders were increasingly worried about spies in their midst, drones in the air and secret tracking devices reporting their movements as the U.S.-led war against them ground on, documents seized in the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden’s Pakistani hideout and reviewed by Reuters reveal. The cache of 113 documents, translated and declassified by U.S. intelligence agencies, are mostly dated between 2009 and 2011, intelligence officials said. The documents — the second tranche from the raid to have been declassified since May 2015 — depict an Al Qaeda that was unwavering in its commitment to global jihad, but with its core leadership in Pakistan and Afghanistan under pressure on multiple fronts. BRAIN Arts to host telethon for artists Boston Hassle and friends promise 24 hours of music, performance, and absurd fun with their experiment in fund-raising. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS
spencer.buell@metro.us
The minds behind Boston’s biggest network for young and unknown artists is using an unusual method to raise money this weekend: a 24-hour live telethon on a public access TV station. From 10 a.m. on Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, the nonprofit BRAIN Arts plans to host a nonstop variety show of musicians, jugglers, artists, puppeteers, scientists and other New England eccentrics at Somerville’s SCATV. If it sounds like a stunt straight out of an ’80s movie, that’s because it is, said organizer Dan Shea. The 1989 “Weird Al” Yankovic cult classic “UHF,” to be exact. “That’s just one of my favorite movies and that has been in my head for
years, to do a telethon,” Shea said. “The spirit of the movie is like the spirit of our organization.” BRAIN Arts is a relatively new nonprofit umbrella for a group of promoters and performers, art fans and radicals that includes the showbooking enterprise Boston Hassle, as well as the free alternative paper the Boston Compass. Right now, it has a volunteer base of more than 200, many of them college students and other city transients. Last year, they booked and ran 150 mini concerts around the city. Their mission is to open their own brick-and-mortar location to house the operation — the ultimate goal being to morph from
an underground operation with a shoestring budget into a full-fledged Boston arts institution, albeit a smaller and weirder one. “We want to be a broader part of the community,” said Harrison Bralower, another BRAIN Arts leader. They’ve struggled to get advertising money and private underwriters, he said, so this year, they’re launching a donor sustainer program, following in the footsteps of other Boston institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts and WGBH. At the telethon, they’ll be hawking branded mugs and screen-printed, vinyl record-size tote bags. Ideally, BRAIN Arts
“We take grandiose ideas and try to make them happen. It’s the fundamental nature of community media and free speech, and it also translates into wild events like this one.” Jones
would like to make the telethon an annual showpiece, but they’re not even sure if they’ll break even — for which they’ll need about $1,400. The logistics were a challenge, but in the end, they settled on setting up a call-in number through Google Voice (1-804-4-HASSLE), which will route through Bralower’s laptop. The real money-exchanging will happen via the Boston Hassle website. SCATV, for its part, is totally on board. “It’s going to be epic,” said Erica Jones, director of membership and outreach for the station. SCATV negotiated a bargain deal — a $1,000 fee — to rent the space, corralled about a dozen volunteers to help out and got those behind its regularly aired programs to give up their time slots for the effort, Jones said. It’s never hosted a similar event before, she said, but it fits the mold for the SCATV’s mission. Watch the madness live on SCATV, stream it at the station’s website or listen in to exclusive interviews via the free online Boston Free Radio.

Massachusetts voters flocked to the polls in what was shaping up to be the election with the highest voter turnout in state history. Secretary of State William Galvin on Tuesday said voter turnout could top that of the 2008 primary, telling the Boston Globe that the unusually flamboyant campaign and candidacy of Donald Trump could bring recordbreaking crowds. Polls predicted a wide margin of victory for businessman Donald Trump, placing him far ahead of Republican rivals Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and John Kasich. Democrats, meanwhile, were slated to see a closer race between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ver-

Now or never: Trump’s ‘wall’ talk sparks migrant rush across US-Mexico border Trump has built a strong lead in the race for the Republican nomination in part by taking a tough stance on immigration. Gang violence and poverty have for years pushed Mexicans and Central Americans north to the United States, but recently a new driver has emerged: the anti-immigrant tone of leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. From the slums of Central America to close-knit migrant communities in U.S. cities, Trump’s rise to the front of the Republican pack has not gone unnoticed and is partly behind a spike in the numbers of migrants trying to enter the country, including children traveling without guardians.

Interviews with migrants, people smugglers and officials show many migrants are trying to cross now instead of facing tighter policing and new policies to halt illegal immigration if Trump or another Republican wins the Nov. 8 election. “If Trump wins, we’re all screwed and all Latinos are screwed,” Isaias Franco, a 46-year-old from El
Salvador who was deported from the United States late last year and is now trying to get back, said at a migrant shelter in Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, Texas. UN to restart Syria peace talks March 9 The United Nations will delay the next round of Syria peace talks by two days to allow the cessation of hostilities in force since Saturday to take hold, U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said. International observers have acknowledged violations of the agreement intended to halt nearly five years of fighting while reporting that the level of violence has decreased considerably. “We are delaying it to the afternoon of [March] 9 for logistical and technical reasons and also for the ceasefire to better settle down,” de Mistura told Reuters on Tuesday. The talks had been penciled in for March 7. The cessation of hostilities was “a glimmer of hope,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said, although he accused the

opposition of violating the agreement. The opposition in turn says the Syrian government has breached the fragile truce by repeatedly attacking its positions, which the government denies. “We will play our part to make the whole thing work,” Assad told
Germany’s ARD television network, adding that the Syrian army had not reacted to truce violations in order to give the agreement a chance. “The terrorists have breached the deal from the first day. We, as the Syrian army, are refraining from responding in order to give a chance to
sustain the agreement. But in the end, there are limits and it all depends on the other side,” Assad said. The cessation of hostilities agreement, drawn up by the United States and Russia, is seen by the United Nations as an opportunity to revive peace talks which collapsed before they had even started a month ago in Geneva. It also hopes the truce will allow humanitarian aid to be sent into besieged areas where many Syrians are living in dire conditions. However, the opposition said it had yet to be officially informed of a new round of talks on March 9, insisting that no serious discussions can begin before detainees are freed and blockades are lifted. BRIEF Europe on cusp of new humanitarian crisis at GreeceMacedonia border The build-up of thousands of migrants and refugees on Greece’s northern borders is fast turning into a humanitarian disaster, the United Nations said on Tuesday as the European Union prepared to offer more financial aid. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said clashes at Greece’s border with Macedonia on Monday – when migrants battered down a gate and were tear-gassed – simply underlined the urgency with which the EU needed to act on the crisis. But Austria – which last month limited the number of migrants it lets through to 3,200 a day – stuck to its position that it did not want to become an overcrowded waiting room for
thousands wanting to make it further north. Croatia, which is also on what is now the well-trodden migrants’ route northwards from Greece, said it might deploy its armed forces to help police control flows. But near Idomeni, on the Greek-Macedonia border itself, a tent city mushroomed, prompting some despair among those trapped there. “Macedonian police put us here, the Greeks don’t want us back,” Yase Qued, a 16-year-old from Afghanistan, told Reuters. The United Nations’ high commissioner for refugees called for better planning and accommodation for at least 24,000 it said were stuck in Greece, including 8,500 at Idomeni. REUTERS

She took to her blog — yes, she has a blog, and it’s called Happily Eva After — to divulge the details of what she calls “Nannygate 2.0. But unlike other celebrity menfolk, her hubby, Kyle Martino, found the power to resist the siren call of the woman hired to watch the little ones. “This is even more nuts than you can imagine, she warns, launching into a tale about the replacement nanny they hired after she had to fire their first one. Amurri recounts that on her way back from a quick business trip to New York, Martino let her know some shocking news.

Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre offers a taste of Cuban culture The new performance shows there’s more to Cuban dance than salsa. REENA KARASIN @reenakarasin

Artistic Director Jose Mateo pays tribute to his heritage with “The Cuba Files,” a show of three distinct ballets set to Cuban music that explore the country’s history and universal feelings of entrapment. The show, which runs through March 6, includes two ballets created in 2004 and the premiere of a new piece, “In Our Minds.” While “Escape” and “Danzones Baleticos” deal directly with matters of Cuban culture and history, Mateo explained that he was inspired by the music of a new work, Cuban composer Juan Piñera’s “Trio Cervantino,” to address more widespread experiences. “I wanted to include something that really wasn’t about the national

“[It’s about] the oppression that sometimes is self-imposed,” he says. “Sometimes we as human beings can feel trapped by our own doing and find it difficult to escape, if you will, the binds of our own psychological trappings.” The show’s first bal-

let, “Escape,” deals with more literal oppression. The narrative ballet follows several Cubans who are “suspected of being dissidents,” and examines the political oppression and lack of freedom that they face. The second piece, “Danzones

Mateo hopes that “The Cuba Files” will broaden people’s understandings of Cuban music and dance, which he explains is often limited to salsa. “[I want] to demonstrate how ballet, which often gets relegated to specific expectations that it is narrow, to demonstrate that the ballet vocabulary can accommodate a lot of different styles and account for the ability to create a lot of different

We checked in with Jennifer Corredor, founder of J Design Group, for some tips on inviting the outdoors in. “It’s always important to integrate natural elements into the interior of our homes,” says the expert. “It unites our spirit and gives a sense of well-being.”
Commit to a plant Yes, a houseplant requires more attention than a vase of cut flowers. But for a longerlasting, year-round alternative to those

Think beyond the blossoms It’s still much too early to clip blooms from your garden, true. But budding branches and leaves can make for a chic, unexpected arrangement. Even if you’re going the florist route, Corredor recommends skipping the tulips and incorporating statement foliage into the arrangement. “Large heliconia leaves, for example, can be used as
a base in the middle of the dining table,” she says. “Then, lay a large heliconia blossom with its vibrant orange hues on top. This makes a gorgeous display.”
Forget the greens altogether If you’re not up for tending to plants — or if your cat isn’t up to not destroying plants — there are plenty of other ways to incorporate nature into your home. Shells, stones or driftwood can echo the seaside, while agate and shed antlers add a more earthy touch. “Even small branches or twigs can be used around to dress the house,” says Corredor. “Another interesting arrangement can be made with fresh fruits, such as oranges, tangerines and mandarins, whatever may be in season. This always adds an element of surprise.”

surprisingly pricey supermarket bouquets, consider investing in some potted plants to freshen up your space after that long winter’s nap. “Flowers are a natural go-to and add color and life to interiors,” says Corredor. “However, incorporate plants, as well. If one has the space, herbs both adorn the kitchen and can be utilized in our daily cooking.”

Ramirez needs to be better at the plate in 2016 for Red Sox All the focus is on Hanley’s new position, but he needs to be better with the bat, too. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
The biggest question most people ask when it comes to Hanley Ramirez is, “How will he do playing first base?” Ramirez’s first year with the Red Sox was a disaster, as he struggled to make the transition from the infield to left field and then missed the last few months of the season due to injury. Ever since he arrived at JetBlue Park the big focus with Ramirez has been his adjustment to first, analyzing every move he makes while learning to play the position. A natural infielder,
the transition should be much easier than the one last season to the outfield and a whole new scene. What is being overlooked right now, though, is Ramirez at the plate and how much better he needs to be than he was last season. In his first season back with the Red Sox, Ramirez hit just .249 with 19 home runs and 53 RBIs. Even worse for Ramirez was that he hit 10 home runs in the month of April alone. The slugger struggled as the season wore on, as starting on June 1 he had just 14 extra-base hits the rest of the year. Compared to the rest of the team, his output was not good. Mookie Betts had 24 more RBIs than Ramirez did, which is indicative of how the season went for the Red Sox — another last-place finish. The one thing to note with Ramirez is that he

was battling injuries for most of the season. He played through a shoulder injury early in the year, which was likely a major reason why his power numbers were down after April and that was the reason why he was shut
down for the season — essentially for the final two months. Despite the additions to the rotation and bullpen, the Red Sox need Ramirez to hit. He will likely be batting fifth behind Xander Bogaerts and

David Ortiz in the lineup and they will need him to be able to drive in a lot of runs. Totaling 53 RBIs is not going to cut it. They need much more than that … maybe double the output. Ramirez’s .249 average
was the second-lowest of his career, only his .243 average in also an injuryplagued year of 2011 was worse. Speaking after Monday’s spring training opener against Boston College, Sox manager John Farrell was impressed with Ramirez and his swing. “The one thing I’ve seen, and granted it’s live BP, regular BP and a couple of at-bats in a game, but it’s a more compact swing and if you notice, the finish is a two-handed finish rather than releasing the top hand,” Farrell told reporters. “He’s repeating his swing. I’ll temper it because it’s early, but he looks to be in a good place with his swing.’’ This a good sign for Red Sox Nation, as they desperately need Ramirez to be better at the plate than he was last season.

Stephen Curry has put up video-game numbers for a while now, but this weekend he hit actual video-game shots. That half-court game-winning buzzerbeater is not luck. He works on those. He’s got to be the unanimous MVP, right?

Last week’s three doubledigit wins in which the opponents were held to 92 points, 78 points, and 94 points, is much more Spurs-like than the week before (2-1, allowed 105-plus points each game). Western Conference Finals are going to be something wild.
The Cavs are still holding the top spot in the East, but you just get the feeling things aren’t right behind the scenes. Whispers of Kyrie Irving being unhappy, constant questions on how they can fit Kevin Love in, etc. Cause for concern in Cleveland?
The C’s went 3-0 over the last week, coming out on top in three very hardfought games. The win over Utah is perhaps most impressive, as Boston fought for a full 48 minutes, took a late lead on Jae Crowder’s three-pointer, and sealed it with an Avery Bradley block.
What a month for Damian Lillard — historically good, actually. His 29.82 points per game average is the third-highest scoring month in Blazers history. The best thing that could have happened to him was being snubbed for the All-Star Team.
Uh oh. Three straight losses by the Pacers and just like that they’re on the brink off being on the outside looking in. With three games coming up this week against the Bucks, Bobcats, and Wizards — all on the road — this is a big stretch for them.

Love this Raptors team. Down nine to the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter, they climb back on Kyle Lowry’s career-night and come up with a huge win at home. That win gives Toronto a 2-1 season series advantage against the defending Eastern Conference champs, which could be important at the end of the season.
On Monday against the Kings, Russell Westbrook had his 20th triple-double over the last two seasons. It’s crazy that Westbrook would probably be taken before Durant now. That wasn’t supposed to happen, was it? He’s averaging a double-double (24.3 points, 10.3 assists) on the season.
The Clippers introduced a new mascot on Monday, Chuck the Condor. I don’t get it. But it was good that Blake Griffin didn’t punch him out. Progress! Doc Rivers recently said Griffin is “not close” to returning, though he’s shooting. LA hosts the Thunder on Wednesday night in a premier West Coast battle.
Two straight wins going into Tuesday night in Golden State (gulp) against the red-hot Warriors. Kris Humphries is a really nice addition to the team in what should be a tight East playoff race. Hump can still rebound and has developed an outside shot. He can certainly help them win.
The Mavericks have won two games in a row and David Lee has played a key role in each of those games. Perhaps that addition is more important for them than we thought. Then again, the Nuggets and T-Wolves aren’t exactly the best competition to make that assessment against.
